ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS! The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware. For further information, contact Len Waska at lwaska@att.net or call at 361-865-9326

EARLY AMERICAN PATTERN GLASS While wealthy folks of the early Victorian era could afford to enhance their homes with fine blown or cut glass from Europe, such luxuries were far beyond the reach of the “average Joe” who worked seven days a week for $20 a month. But old fashioned “American ingenuity” helped level the playing field in 1821 when J.P. Blackwell received a patent for a process that could press molten glass into a mold. Blackwell’s first pieces were the glass knobs found on the Empire style furniture of the day, but glass houses were soon pressing the molten material into other utilitarian goods such as butter dishes, sugar bowls, creamers and spoon holders. The common man was soon able to replace his earthenware items with attractive pieces of pretty glass, originally called “Pressed Glass”, but known today as “Early American Pattern Glass”, or EAPG as it is known by most collectors. Collectors recognize three periods of production; the “Lacy Period”, which lasted through the 1830s and 1840s, which was characterized by highly profiled designs of fine stippling; The “Flint Period”, which stretched from the late 1840s until the start of the Civil War and is known for its simple geometric lines and the addition of lead “which gave it a brilliant appearance, more weight and a “ring” when tapped; and “The Non-First Period”, which started shortly after the War. The Civil War made lead more valuable for making bullets than for use in glassware, sending the glass industry into a tailspin. True to spirit, faced with having to return 40 year old techniques, American ingenuity stepped in again when, in 1862, William Leighton replaced lead with soda-lime. This began the “Non-First Period” and although the glass was lighter, less brilliant, and less resonant, it was also much less expensive, thinner, and easier to mold, resulting in more complicated designs, detail and craftsmanship. Hundreds of patterns and shapes were created, including animal, fruit, fauna and geometric patterns. While their dishes and serving pieces were still usually made of ironstone, largely imported from England, the American housewife was able to brighten up her table with beautiful glass table sets, usually consisting of a butter dish with a lid, a sugar bowl with a lid, a creamer and a spoon holder, known today as a “spooner”. There were also “extended” table sets available that included a celery vase or tray, a cruet or a jelly compote. Having a celery vase was considered somewhat of a status symbol back then as they were associated with the more affluent segment of society. Some companies also offered berry bowls or beverage sets to match the table sets. By the 1880s the national depression caused the glass houses to rethink their production methods and many of the smaller houses joined forces, becoming huge manufacturers. U.S. Glass was made up of eighteen smaller firms and National was a merger of nineteen. The result was increased production, reworked molds, reissues of earlier patterns and the introduction of cased glass, custard glass, opalescent glass and ruby staining, often engraved with names and dates and known today as “Souvenier Glass”. But fires, financial failures and other events caused production to suffer again and, around the time of World War I, production of Pattern Glass essentially ceased. During its nearly 100 year run, Early American Pattern Glass was produced by almost 100 companies in over 2,000 patterns. One of the rarest patterns is “U.S. Coin”, made by the U.S. Glass company in 1892. Production was shut down by the United States Treasury Department after only a few months because the factory had used real coins to make the molds and it was considered “counterfeiting”. Today a Champagne glass in the U.S. Coin pattern brings $2,500 and a 9-inch compote books for about $4,500. Many patterns contained dozens of pieces, such as “King’s Crown” which originally consisted of 100 pieces made by two manufacturers. It has since had 66 of the pieces reproduced by five other companies. At the other end of the spectrum, are patterns where only one piece was made, such as the rare, “Owl and Pussycat” cheese dish, which books for $400.

pieces in at least 24 colors. The original late 1800s pieces, were made in clear, clear with frosted moons, and clear with ruby stain. Anything else, although pretty, should be considered reproductions. As proof of its popularity, Moon and Star is the only EAPG pattern that had its own dedicated price guide. Another very interesting facet of collecting EAPG is the series by U.S. Glass known as “the States Series”. Although no records exist to explain exactly why the series was started, whether it was a shrewd marketing ploy or just a whim, the large number of pieces offered in each pattern made these some of the U.S. Glass comapny’s most popular lines. Introduced in 1897, pattterns called “Indiana”, “Pennsylvania”, “Ohio”, “Maryland”, “Kentucky”, and “Illinois” were produced in clear and emerald green either plain or gilded (Indiana was issued only in clear). In 1898, they added “Lousiania”, “Massachusetts”, “Minnesota”, “Florida”, and “Colorado” and by 1902, twenty five additional designs were introduced for a total of 36 patterns in only seven years. An excellent book, entitled “U.S. Glass, the States Patterns”, was written by Jenks and Reilly in 1998 and, although out of print, it's a “must have” book for the serious EAPG collector. Due to the lack of factory records or literature, many early researchers assigned their own names to the patterns over the years, ignoring the fact that earlier researchers had done the same. The end result is that numerous EAPG patterns have several different names. The pattern now known as “Cut Log” for example, was originally called “Ethol” by the manufacturer. It is also known to collectors as “Cat’s Eye” and “Block”. The pattern “Ashburton” has fourteen other names. The large number of names assigned to each pattern makes identification extremely difficult. An out of print book, but one that can still be found, that helps with pattern identification is “The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Pattern Glass” by Molly McCain. This book helps identify approximately 2400 patterns by their primary characteristics, such as “animals”, “birds”, “circles”, “facets”, “flowers”, “shells”, etc. This is another “must have” book even for the advanced collector. While on the subject of out of print books, to serious collectors, the “Holy Grail” of EAPG reference books is “Pressed Glass in America” by John and Elizabeth Welker. This book covers the history of pressed glass from 1825 to 1925 in minute detail, including patent drawings of machinery and molds used to produce this fine glassware. Several reference books on Early American Pattern Glass have been written over the years by authors such as Ruth Webb Lee, who wrote over a dozen books in the 1930s and Minnie Watson Kamm in the 1940s. At the present time, there are four reference books currently available on EAPG. One is written by Mike Carwile, who identiifies and prices approximately 1,200 patterns, another on written by Jenks and Luna covers the 248 most popular patterns as well as listing all known reproductions in each pattern, and “American Pattern Glass Table Sets” by Gene and Kathy Florence and Danny Cornelius and Don Jones, who identify and price table sets in 425 patterns. The most recent addition to our knowledge of Pattern Glass is again by NDGA Director Danny Cornelius and Don Jones and is entitled “Early American Pattern Glass Cake Stands & Serving Pieces, Identification and Value Guide”. The book contains 1,150 photos of 465 known patterns and 20 unidentified ones from 64 manufacturers. Where do you start? With the thousands of pattern glass reproductions and “look alikes” on the market, the new collector needs to familiarize himself with the many pitfalls by learning as much as he can from talking to dealers who specialize in Pattern Glass or by picking up one of the many price guides available. Since it’s impossible for an antique dealer to know everything about every type of antique on the market, the old adage, “if you don’t know your antiques, know your antiques dealer” is very applicable.

While Kings Crown has had a large number of pieces reproduced, the pattern known as “Moon and Star” actually has more reproductions and “look alike” pieces than were originally made. Made by three glass houses between 1888 and 1898, “Moon and Star”, originally named “Palace”, had 60 pieces. Today’s collector can find slightly over 100

The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive fire in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.

Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.

COLLECTING a Blessing or a Sickness? by Len Waska A recent survey showed that 60% of American homes have at least one collection and in many cases it was started by something inherited from a parent or grandparent, like the pretty piece of colored Depression Glass that Grandma used in her kitchen. Many a housewife has sought additional pieces of the same pattern to add to her kitchen like Grandma did. Other commonly collected items are stamps and coins, both of which are encouraged by the U.S. Government by issuing dozens of commemorative stamps and coins every year. People have been collecting for centuries. An 80,000 year old cave in France had what appeared to be a collection of pebbles, and King Tut’s tomb contained a lot of walking sticks. But humans aren’t the only creatures to collect things. While everyone is familiar with “pack rats”, up to 70 other species collect and not just food. American Crows and Northern Ravens are known to collect aluminum foil and brightly colored objects, hamsters in a laboratory chose to hoard glass beads over food, and, not long ago, a lady in Seattle who enjoyed sharing her lunch with crows began putting food in a bird feeder for them. The crows learned to wait for their dinner and then began leaving gifts for her like earrings, beads, Lego pieces and screws.

HISTORY OF COLLECTING In the Middle Ages, the Church collected items believed to have powers, like splinters from the cross, milk from the Virgin Mary and pieces of Moses’ staff. In the early 15th Century, collecting switched from the church to “studios”, private studies filled with books, art , precious objects, silver and gold items, tapestries and leather goods. During the “Age of Discovery”, from 1500 to 1700, advances in science such as the microscope (1590) and the telescope (1608), and innovations in navigation improved travel; and improved printing, like the Gutenburg press, encouraged more people to read. Improved travel and increased reading expanded people’s curiosity and inspired more collecting. In the 16th Century, Prince Rudolf, the nephew of Spain’s King Phillip, became the Holy Roman Emperor in 1575 and got a jump on collecting by inviting artists and craftsmen to his castle to create things, and he hired agents to travel the world to collect things and send them back to his castle in Prague. A few years later, in the early 1600s, the Duke of Buckingham issued a “wish list” to ship’s captains and seamen of things he wanted to own, and he hired Treduscant the Elder to hunt treasures for his collection. Treduscant accumulated his own collection which included a stone chip from John The Baptist’s tomb and a splinter from Christ’s cross along with many other items. This collection formed the Ashmead Museum of Oxford, which is believed to be the first museum. In 1781, Charles Wilson Peale turned his home into a museum to display his 4000 insects, 1600 taxidermied birds, 90 mammals and complete Mastodon skeleton from a site in New York. During the Civil War, displays of antiques from the Colonial Period were used as fund raisers for the war effort, but the American Centennial of 1876 was the turning point in America’s appreciation of the past. After the Industrial Revolution, goods were no longer hand made, but cranked out by machines, and people became nostalgic for old fashioned craftsmanship. The first antique shop opened in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1896 and, by 1904, Boston listed three antique shops in a business directory and by 1924, there were 47. “The Magazine Antiques” was first printed in 1922 and is still being published today. Although it took a few years, the interest in hand crafted items that began with the 1876 Centennial grew into the Arts Craze of the 1920s when people sought American furniture and artifacts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Arts opened it’s American Wing in 1924. This interest in nostalgia created a new furniture style known as “Colonial Revival”, where the designers mixed parts of various furniture styles of the past 200 years, resulting in furniture with characteristics from Hepplewhite, Duncan Phyfe and Sheraton all on the same piece. Like the Medici and European Royalty, the American wealthy used antiques to display their wealth. J.P. Morgan bought entire collections including DaVinci’s notebook, Shakespeare’s first folios, Catherine The Great’s snuff box and Napoleon’s watch. When Morgan died in 1913, the collection was worth $60 Million dollars. Wealthy Americans were purchasing so many collections from palaces that a British social critic in 1911 wrote “Our finest estates are one by one falling into the hands of American owners. Those moguls, Morgan, Hearst, Mellon and Rockefeller, seem set on denuding Europe of it’s treasures.” Collecting antiques in the 20th Century is “cyclical”, following the nation’s economy and it’s disposable income. It dropped during the Depression and boomed in the 1960s and ‘70s, partly due to Jackie Kennedy decorating the White House with American antiques. In the 1980s, American antiques were appreciating in value at about 1% per month, but the 1990s have been called “The Decade of Collecting”. Noted antiques author, Harry Rinker, who published his own price guide for antiques, said, prior to Ebay in1995, there were fewer than 1500 categories considered to be “collectibles”. Today, there are more than 30,000.

WHY DO PEOPLE COLLECT? You can ask ten collectors why they collect and probably get ten different answers. Some people collect for fun, probably backing up the idea that ”The most important object in a collection is the next one”, the never ending search for that “missing piece”. This may explain why many collectors will sell their collection when it is complete or when that last piece is so rare that it is “beyond reach”. Some people say they collect to have a “controllable world” because many collections take on a life of their own, where one piece is “interesting”, two is a “pair”, three is a “crowd”, four is a “family”, five or more is a “community” and, as the collection grows, it morphs into a “village”, a “world”, and finally a “universe” where the collector is it’s ruler or god. Malcom Forbes said “a collection, any collection, reflects a personality, a certain quality of mind”. One theory behind collecting is that it can deflect against depression and loneliness, but many psychologists paint a much darker reason behind collecting. Sigmund Freud said that women use collecting as a substitute for a mate, and men collect as “conquests”, like climbing a mountain; while other Psychologists say that collecting is an extension used to combat a sense of “nothingness”. Collecting is often confused with “hoarding”, a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or obsessive greed. Probably, the most well known example is Imelda Marcos who had 1060 pairs of shoes, 200 girdles and 500 bras. This is ”hoarding”. In the mid 20th Century, 32 year old Ralph Ellis was committed to a mental institution by his mother because of his voracious collecting of books. When he was released, he continued collecting and, in 1945, he shipped two railroad boxcars containing 65,000 books to the University of Kansas. The difference between “hoarding” and “collecting” is that the hoarder wants “quantity”, while the collector wants “quality”. Earlier in this paragraph, I stated that you could ask ten people why they collect and probably get ten different answers. While reseaching for this article, I ran across a lot more than ten psychologists who had a lot more than ten answers as to why people collect and no two of them agreed, Since the people who claim to know why people do everything can’t even agree with each other, let’s just enjoy our collecting and not worry about why we do it.

Happy Collecting!! Len Waska Antique Furniture Restoration 361-865-9326 • P.O. Box 160 • Flatonia, TX 78941
