ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS! The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware.

YOUTH BOOK SERIES by Len Waska Although it appeared to be a new concept because it was in motion picture format instead of book form, the Harry Potter series was just a remake of a 150 year old idea that people enjoy reading different adventures about their favorite character. As they grow into adulthood, they often collect the books that they read as children and their mothers threw away when they left home. (How many times have you heard a man complain about all the baseball cards his mother threw away?) One of the first authors to develop story lines involving the same main character was William Adams who, under the pen name “Oliver Optic”, wrote 45 adventure novels for young readers. His first book was “Boat Club”, written in 1855, but his most popular series were based on Civil War themes Adams had twelve series, one of which had the same character in seven books. Horatio Alger was working for Adam’s periodical “Students and Schoolmate” and in 1856, he created his “Upward and Onward” theory, where an energetic orphan newsboy uses his own resources to rise to he top of his profession. Substitute “orphan wizard” for “orphan newsboy” and you have Harry Potter! This “rags to riches” concept was so popular and inspiring that Horatio Alger wrote 118 more novels based on the same idea. One not-so-polite historian once said that Alger “wrote one book and then rewrote it 118 more times”. Even though the basic premise was the same in each book, Horatio Alger sold over 250 million books! His “Ragged Dick” series was published from 1868 to 1870 and first printings run in the $750 range. Alger’s “Tattered Tom” series was published in the 1870s. Early copies of his books bring $150, with later ones running $50. Another successful author of book series was Harry Castlemon, (His real name was Charles Fosdick) who served in the U.S. Navy from 1862 to 1867 and based many of his novels on his own military experiences. His “Gun Boat” series was started while he was in the Navy. Castlemon had sixteen book series with a total of 55 books, most of which were based on the nation’s interest in the wild west, cowboys, indians and the gold rush. Another early author who wrote adventure books for boys, although without using the same characters, was G. A. Henty, who served in the Crimean War and was later a war correspondent from 1865 to 1876, following the British Army and their numerous military engagements. At the time, the British Empire reached all around the world and fought wars in many of their colonies, thus giving Henty plenty of material to work with. While he didn’t intend to create a series of books, Henty wrote rousing military histories of young British lads going to the colonies and fighting the locals. Young men on both sides of the Atlantic found Henty’s books to be exciting and they became best sellers because they could count on them to have similar plots and lots of action. It is estimated that 150,000 of Henty’s books were sold every year since his first juvenile book “Out on the Pampas” was published in 1871 with the main characters named and modeled after his four children. Optic, Alger, Henty and Castlemon all wrote novels based on the value of manly virtues in defeating villains while delivering vigorous adventure stories. Edward Stratemeyer worked at Street and Smith in the 1890s and edited boys magazines, wrote dime novels and a serial story for girls under the name Julie Edwards. When Horatio Alger died in 1899, Stratemeyer finished some of Alger’s novels to keep the series going. He soon learned that series were excellent sellers and he started three of the most popular series of the time, The Rover Boys, The Motor Boys, and Tom Swift, all of which sold millions of copies. When Stratemeyer found an appealing character, like Tom Swift, the characters, their friends, parents, servants and home town never changed so the readers always knew who everybody was from book to book. Unlike Horatio Alger’s novels, Stratemeyer’s characters were seldom orphans, but often had widowed fathers. (Apparently, many authors felt that mothers would stifle too much adventure.) When thinking about a new series, Stratemeyer would design the series, come up with the titles, plot outline and pseudonyms and then farm out the writing to several writers. The Garis family accounted for hundreds of Stratemeyer’s titles. The rest of the American publishers recognized Stratemeyer’s success and copied it. L. C. Page credited his financial success to “Pollyanna” and “Anne of Green Gables”, both of which were copied after Stratemeyer’s formula. When the Depression hit in the 1930s, the large publishers had to cut back on their publications and allow booksellers to return unsold copies for credit just to keep the bookselling business alive. It is interesting to note that publishers of today are having a similar problem with the internet and e-books. Of the four largest publishers of price guides and reference books on antiques and collectibles, two have been forced out of business and the other two are carefully considering updating prices in their best sellers and are taking on very few new ones.

Continued from Page 23
While the large publishers of the 1930s had to cut back on their books, the publishers of youth series continued in business by re-releasing them for a new low price of fifty cents. Even the catalogs from Sears and Montgomery Wards featured youth book series. The thirties also saw the introduction of the two most popular Stratemeyer series, “Hardy Boys” and “Nancy Drew”. When Stratemeyer died in 1930, his daughter kept the syndicate afloat by creating new series and remaking the characters. Among the numerous changes, one was the color of Nancy Drew's hair. In the 1950s and 1960s, many librarians banned Stratemeyer books, claiming they “lacked literary quality”, but children didn’t care and continued to buy them. To show how popular series were, in 1955, 150 years after the concept was devised, more than 125 series were listed in Publisher’s Weekly. In 1979, Simon and Schuster bought the rights to Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys and they were reprinted as paperbacks. Some of the most popular series were based on whatever was in the news at the time. The Tom Swift series was obviously inspired by Thomas Edison, as Tom Swift was always inventing gadgets that were slightly ahead of their time. Between 1910 and 1918, Tom Swift invented an airship, a submarine, an electric runabout, wireless messages, a sky racer, an electric rifle, an air glider, a photo telephone and a war tank. The Tom Swift series consisted of 38 books between 1910 and 1941. The series was so popular that in 1954, Tom’s son starred in The Tom Swift Jr. Adventure series, consisting of 33 books, and in 1981, Tom’s grandson went into outer space in ten volumes. Other series based on popular themes of the times were: The Airplane Boys, Air Service Boys, Airplane Girls, Airship Boys, Auto Boys, Automobile Girls, Battleship Boys, Boy Aviators, Boy Fortune Hunters, Motorboat Boys, Motor Boys, Motor Girls, Motorcycle Chums, Moving Picture Boys, Outboard Boys, Racer Boys, Radio Boys, Radio Girls, Speedwell Boys and Submarine Chums. Scouting was in its infancy shortly after the turn of the century so 172 books were devoted to the exploits of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and Brownie Scouts. The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy shared 48 titles and many series were devoted to sports such as baseball, hockey and football and to groups such as the Hardy Boys, the Box Car Children, the Five Little Peppers and Little Women. The Rover Boys series was so popular that, in the 1950s, a team of geologists that was sent all around the world to search for oil and gas resources called themselves The Rover Boys. We mentioned earlier the fact that many of the heroes had widowed fathers. That held true for the series about female adventurers, too. Nancy Drew was a girl sleuth, living with her widowed father, who happened to be an attorney, and a kindly housekeeper. Nancy drove a convertible in her 61 adventures between 1930 and 1979. From 1936 to 1939, Penny Nichols lived with her widowed father, who ran a detective agency, and a motherly housekeeper and drove a roadster in her four adventures; and Penny Parker was a teenager in the 1940s who lived with her widowed father and a friendly housekeeper and drove her own car in her 17 episodes. The biggest difference between these three ladies was that Penny Parker was sassier and more independent than Nancy Drew or Penny Nichols. Information for this article was taken from “Boys’ and Girls’ Book Series”, written by Diane McClure Jones and Rosemary Jones and published by Collector Books in 2002. While the book is out of print and the publisher is out of business, copies can occasionally be found on the secondary market. For anyone interested in the youth book series, this book is a treasure trove of information and includes information on over 900 book series, including the real author’s name, publication dates, all the titles in each series and their approximate values.

Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post office.in 1968.
The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive fire in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.
Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.
