2013 NDGA SPECIAL CONVENTION GUEST AUTHORS This year the Special Guest Authors to the 2013 National Depression Glass Association Convention being held in Wellington, KS July 13-14, 2013 will be Barbara Mauzy and Craig Schenning. Barbara has authored a number of titles on antiques & collectibles and co-authored with husband Jim, a number of depression and kitchen collectible reference books. Barbara is also a talented children’s author with a series of books that address important values and character traits in rhythm and rhyme. Craig is owner and principal of Old Line Publishing and Maple Creek Media located in Hampstead, Maryland. Craig has researched and wrote the book entitled, A Century of Indiana Glass. He is considered one of the foremost authorities on Indiana Glass. We are very fortunate to have two outstanding authors bringing their knowledge and expertise to our convention. Having them come to our convention is a wonderful thing in its self but this isn’t where the story stops. These two special people have done something outstanding that not many people know about yet. I’m about to tell you! We asked Barbara if she would write a children’s story about children of the Depression Era and about Depression Glass. We are so excited to think that she took this project and ran with it. She has written and illustrated Children of the Great Depression especially for the NDGA National Glass Museum. There are actually two stories presented from the viewpoint of a young girl living in the city and a young country boy. Harriet’s family had difficulty affording her care and she is sent to her grandmother’s house where she learns about Depression Glass from attending movies that give away colorful glass with the purchase of a ticket. Johnny’s rural family struggles through difficult years but still finds a way to assist hobos and pay for a new electric stove that includes a four-piece range set of glass shakers. In the midst of financial struggles, Harriet and Johnny find joy in the little things including sparkling new pieces of glassware. Now to get it published. This is where Craig Schenning steps in. As was mentioned in an above paragraph Mr. Schenning is owner and principal of Old Line Publishing and Mable Creek Media. He so graciously agreed to publish Barbara’s book so that we will have it in time for our convention. Barbara and Craig will be signing and selling their latest books at the NDGA National Glass Museum on Friday July 12, 2013 between 1-3pm. Come meet them and pick up one of their books. ROUND TOP TEXAS SUMMER SHOW HOSTING ANTIQUES, VINTAGE, AND DESIGN • JUNE 21-22 The Big Red Barn Summer Show will be offering over 100 exhibitors with exciting collections and great diversity! The Big Red Barn Summer Antiques Show, June 21-22 will have a full house again with expanded variety of antiques from Texas and across America, architecturals, and collections of Mid-Century Modern. As the antiques highlight for summer in the small Texas town, The Round Top Summer Show will have more than 100 exhibitors for the sixth summer. Since the inception of this show Susan has been building the variety of the collections which has at the same time been attracting more shoppers from the wide area in the show’s net. Patti Walsh, Chappell Hill has been offering Early American Primitives she collects from the Northeast. The Vernon’s bring an assortment of Early Texas home furnishings and furniture from their shop and home in nearby Brenham, Texas. Shopping in New England and Pennsylvania, Pasadena Texas dealer Myrleen Harper finds Early Americana for her inventory and collections. The June show gives them an opportunity to run a sale with as Myrleen said “lot’s of different antiques at special prices just before we take our annual trip to the Northeast for more.â€? Fred Cain collects fine early small antiques near his Fort Myers, FL home and has not missed a sale at the Big Red Barn since he first began to exhibit at the shows about six years ago. Susan has been encouraging dealers with some later collections as well. Look for Mid-Century Modern and Art Deco and some Industrial among the selections at air conditioned Big Red Barn this June. Summer at the Big Red Barn is Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Located on 475 South State Highway 237, Carmine, Texas about 2 miles south of U.S. 290 it is only a little more than an hour from either Houston or Austin. All exhibits are inside the fully air conditioned Big Red Barn with on-site food service for the visitors comfort and convenience.
