Some of the most saved, if not one of the most collected items in the world are postcards. Because they are colorful, pretty, informative and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take up much space, most postcards are tossed in drawers rather than in the trash and, being cheap to print and mail, there are millions of postcards lying in drawers all around the world which has created a large number of postcard collectors and postcard shows.

While probably 95 % of the postcards in the world are worth less than $10, some with photos depicting famous people, events or disasters can bring hundreds of dollars. While the age of a postcard has little bearing on itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s value, a question that frequently arises is â&#x20AC;&#x153;How old is it?â&#x20AC;? Used postcards normally bear the dated postmark, but many cards purchased as souvenirs of a trip were never mailed and lack that mark.

For those ANTIQUING TEXAS readers who have undated postcards, hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little help in dating them:
1930-1944
1893-1898
New printing equipment allowed printing on cards with a high rag content, creating a textured finish with bright colors.
Some of the first postcards were sold at the Columbian Exposition in 1893. The government printed some with the printed one cent stamp and several private companies printed cards that required a two cent stamp be applied. The back side was for the address only and any message had to be written on the picture side of the card.
Postal regulations required privately printed cards to say â&#x20AC;&#x153;POST CARDSâ&#x20AC;? on the back, while government issued cards read â&#x20AC;&#x153;POSTAL CARDSâ&#x20AC;?. Writing on the back was still prohibited. Many people had black and white photographs printed on post card backs. While Great Britain allowed postcards to have a divided back with the left side used for messages since 1902, the U.S. didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allow it until 1907. 1915-1930 To save ink, postcards were printed with a white border around the front.

Kick-off is at 10:30 a.m. with our annual parade. Parade includes floats, classic cars, antique tractors, bicycles and pets, all decked out in their patriotic best! Parade travels through the downtown historic district on High Street and then on to Comfort Park. Texas-Style Barbecue is served at the park beginning at 11:30 a.m. with beans, potato salad and all the trimmings for a nominal charge. It is prepared by members of the Comfort Volunteer Fire Department. There is also family fun at the park including moon bounces and carnivalstyle games as well as other vendors.
