Azle & Burleson Antique Malls and his wife, Isabelle, have recently opened a new shop! + + + + + Everything in the store is from New England, and everything is old — You won’t find any crafts or candles here. You will find full-size buggies & sleighs, primitive and Victorian furniture, wonderful country smalls and Art Deco treasures, architecturals from weathervanes to tin ceilings to wide pine boards, hardware & tools, a great selection of ephemera & postcards, toys, kitchenware, glass & stoneware, advertising, cats & dogs, early clothing and old worn rugs. Need a 19th-century dog treadmill? We’ve got it. We’re next door to the 16,000-sq. ft. Azle Antique Mall, only 20 minutes from downtown Fort Worth.

ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS! The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware.

THE FURNITURE OF JOHN HENRY BELTER Part One by Len Waska It is rare that someone in any field has had such an impact on that field that their name has become
synonymous with all the other works in that field. Like Thomas Chippendale and Louis Comfort Tiffany, John Henry Belter was such a person. He was the outstanding figure in the history of 19th Century American furniture. In the 1970s, all copies of documents were called “Xerox” copies, regardless of the brand of the copier used, and for nearly 100 years, any heavily carved furniture in the Rococo style was called “Belter”, no matter who the manufacturer was. Born Johann Heinrich Belter in 1804 and raised in Hilter, near Osnabruck, Germany, he spent his early years as a cabinetmaker's apprentice in Stuttgart in the Wurttemburg province where he was trained in the Black Forest tradition of rich carving. In 1833, he moved to New York and became a United States citizen in 1839. The best known furniture styles between 1840 and 1860 were the simple “Empire” style and the “Rococo Revival” style which quickly became the style of high fashion in a variety of designs to meet the broad spectrum of taste and price. The fluid Rococo style, succeeded the uniquely Neoclassical and functional Biedermeier period created in Germany, and the Empire style that inspired Duncan Phyfe, who we introduced you to earlier this year in ANTIQUING TEXAS. Already an accomplished furniture maker when he came here, John Henry Belter brought a lot of talent and ambition with him and, by 1844, he used both to become one of the most well respected cabinetmakers in New York and he opened his own shop. His work was of such high quality that he showed a piece at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York's Crystal Palace in 1853. Although it was not in the illustrated account of the exhibit, Belter's piece is listed in the official catalog as a “Round Center Table of Ebony and Ivory”. The piece was lost over time, but about 40 years ago, half of it was located. It had been sawed in two pieces just above the stretcher and the bottom half now has a glass top and is a coffee table in a Kentucky home. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Belter was aware of the differences between the tastes of the 18th and 19th Centuries. He saw that the simple flowers and shells so popular in the 18th Century were too weak for 19th Century America and he introduced more complex fruit, flowers and vegetables that recalled the tastes of the late 1600s, while his competitors merely updated the 18th Century motifs, compromising quality to satisfy those who would not pay for the best. Among his clientele, Belter had the wealthiest families in New York and many wealthy plantation owners in the deep south who wanted the finest and he refused to lower his standards, leaving that to his competition. In 1858, he opened a five story factory ,employing many apprentices and his wife's three brothers, Jonathan, William and Frederick Springmeyer, who were also from Hitter, Germany.
ROCOCO REVIVAL STYLE While Rococo was popular in the 1700s, the Rococo Revival style followed the original style more closely than any of the many other revivals and was so widely accepted around the world that it was called “Zweite Rokoko” and “Neo Brocco” in other countries. It was never a favorite design of architects or designers, but was a favorite of decorators. It was characterized by naturalistic designs and ornamental details, “C” scrolls and “S” scrolls, pierce-carving cutting all the way through the wood leaving a “lacy” appearance, cabriole legs shaped like a graceful letter “S”, undulating seat rails, and carved flowers, birds, shells, fruits and human busts, all of which required highly skilled carvers and cabinet makers, many of whom came from the shops of Europe. Belter's furniture was the most elegant and had finer carving, with infinitely more intricate and ornate rose and fruit motifs. The firm of Dunn and Bradstreet recognized Belter's talents and business sense and thought he was a good risk who would pay his bills, but they also said that the quality of his furniture was too high for the business to be profitable.

MATERIALS While he also used walnut and mahogany, rosewood was the material most favored by his mid-nineteenth Century patrons and most of Belter's pieces were of rosewood from Brazil. The name comes from the faint odor of roses when the wood is cut. It is beautifully colored with streaks of black and very dense but brittle. Chairs break easily when stressed or toppled over. This problem was solved by lamination involving gluing extremely thin sheets with the grain of adjacent sheets oriented in different directions. While a sheet will break easily when stress is applied along its grain, it is least likely to break from stress applied perpendicular to the grain. This is the theory behind plywood as we know it today. While he did not invent the laminating process, which was used in 1773 by the Adams Brothers and in 1820 by Biedermeier, Belter greatly improved the process, and, although the vast majority of his work is laminated, Belter also made furniture of solid wood. Like Duncan Phyfe, who did not change styles to meet the trends of the buying public, Belter produced only Rococo Revival style furniture.
BELTER'S PATENTS While most 19th Century patents were concerned with piling decoration on decoration, a defining characteristic of the later Renaissance Revival furniture, Belter showed a concern for achieving a simple, lightweight, delicate structure that was necessary to carry out his decorative designs, and, although he didn't invent the process for laminating wood, Belter discovered an unusual method of cutting through strong laminated pieces, creating extraordinary curves without sacrificing strength and durability. In July of 1847, Belter received a patent for “Machinery for sawing Arabesque chairs”. His second patent was awarded in August of 1856 for a bedstead made “for quick disassembly in case of a fire”, that also had “intricate recesses about the joints and fasteners, notorious as hiding places for bugs”. In February of 1858, Belter received his most important patent for “Improvements in the method of manufacturing furniture” which refined the process for laminate construction. His third patent replaced the common rail and style chair back with a one piece molded back of laminated wood. His patent illustration showed six layers of veneer. Belter's last patent, issued in 1860, described by him as offering “certain new and useful improvements in bureaus”, was for a bureau drawer with the sides made of single strips of laminated wood and a locking device. Existing pieces of Belter furniture and their dated invoices show that he had been using his processes well before applying for the patents, indicating that he obtained the patents only to thwart his competitors. One of his competitors, Charles A. Baudouine, even tried to avoid infringing on Belter's patents by making the backs of his laminated chairs using a center joint. Be sure to visit your favorite antique shop next month for a copy of ANTIQUING TEXAS when we bring you part two of THE FURNITURE OF JOHN HENRY BELTER. We'll show you how to identify Belter's work from that of his competitors All that remains of the table that Belter exhibited in the 1853 expo in New York's Crystal Palace.

ROSEVILLE POTTERY In the late 1800s, Ohio had become the center for American Art Pottery due to its easily accessable waterways, plenty of natural gas and rich clay and, during the first decade of the 20th Century, Zanesville, Ohio was known as “Clay City” because it had 15 potteries. Of all the potteries in the country, the Roseville Pottery Company produced probably the most recognizable American Art Pottery, partly due to the fact that their wares were sold in drug stores and flower shops all across the country. Founded in Roseville, Ohio in 1890 with George Frank Young as the General Manager, they purchased the J. B. Owens Pottery Company where they produced flower pots, cuspidors, coin banks, umbrella stands, cooking crocks and novelties, none of which were marked with the company name. The company incorporated in 1892 and, in 1898, the company moved 11 miles to Zanesville, Ohio, keeping the Roseville name. In 1899, Roseville sued Samuel A.Weller, the owner of Weller Pottery Co, for patent infringement. About this time, George Young gained control of all the shares of Roseville stock and decided the company should shift their interest to the popular Art Pottery business. Intending to be the best Art Pottery company in America, George Young hired the best talent available, many of whom became famous in the art pottery and ceramics fields and later started their own potteries. Originally, the company used only local clays in their products for the basic bisque material, but later added foreign clays for additional strength and better finish. Both the World Wars stopped importation of foreign materials, so they turned to neighboring states for materials. Sales declined after World War II, partly due to cheaper Japanese goods and partly because changing life styles made Roseville’s elaborate designs seem “old fashioned”. In the late 1940s, the company issued some glossy finished items in hopes of capturing the public’s attention again.
THE MAKING OF POTTERY The entire procedure involved in making pottery is fascinating. It’s the kind of thing that everybody should put on their “bucket list”. Finely powdered clay is combined with water to make a slurry, about the consistency of pancake batter, called “slip”. It is thin enough to be forced through tubing to several stations where it's poured into handshaped plaster moulds. The plaster absorbs the water from the slip, causing the slip next to the plaster mould to harden. Excess slip is poured out of the mould and recycled into more pottery. The longer the slip stays in the mould, the thicker the clay in the pottery. All of Roseville’s small shapes and even some of the large square umbrella stands were made this way. None of Roseville’s commercial production was hand turned on a potter’s wheel. After the moist clay shapes are removed from the plaster moulds, they are trimmed with a knife to remove the joint marks, the bottoms are recessed and stamped and the handles are added. Background colors are airbrushed on. Hand painting on the company’s finest pieces took from a few hours to as much as two days for the largest pieces.
LINES With over 130 lines, space will not allow us to list all of them. The “DELLA ROBBIA” line consisted of stylized, hand carved designs; “TOURIST” was paneled with country scenes; “CREMO” pieces have simple decorations, but are very rare, bringing as much as $1000 for an example. The “MARA” line is covered in a metallic lustre; “OLYMPIC” is similar to ancient Greek wares; “FUDJIYAMA” comes in bisque and enameled finish; “CHLORON” has a bright, smooth green glaze and is often unmarked; “EGYPTIAN” has a rich, variegated green glaze and is marked with the Rozane seal. “AZUREAN” was introduced in 1902 and is like Weller’s blue Louwelsa with a blue and white underglaze on a blended background (Maybe this was to get even with Weller for their patent infringement). In 1904, George Young hired Frederick Rhead away from Weller and Rhead designed the company’s Olympic and Della Robbia lines and later designed Homer Laughlin’s “Fiesta” line. By 1908 all hand crafting had ended except for the Rozane Royal line. In 1904, Frank Ferrell was Weller’s top decorater, designing 80 lines for the company, and was Roseville’s Artistic Director from 1917 until 1954. In 1931, Roseville introduced their “Pine Cone” line which became one of the company’s most successful lines, being available in over 75 shapes in blue, brown and green. (For Roseville fans,
by Len Waska
probably the finest display of Blue Roseville Pine Cone in the United States was at the San Antonio Glass Show in February of 2011.) For 1931, the company’s emphasis was on utilitarian items with floral designs in pastel colors. In 1952, in an attempt to figure out what the buying public wanted, the company used outside design talent to develop an oven - to - table dinnerware line called “RAYMAR”. It was a modernistic line designed to compete with plastics and cheap foreign goods. It didn’t sell well and in November of 1954, the company was sold, having spent 66 years trying to figure out the public’s constantly changing tastes.
MARKS Early pieces of Roseville were steel die impressed and it’s not unusual to find a piece with a letter or number upside down, making a modern buyer think it is one of the many fake pieces around. Other marks are “RPCO”, “RPCo” and “R.P.CO.” In all, over 40 different marks were used on Roseville through the years. In 1931, the name was changed to “Roseville Pottery, Inc.” and the name was printed in artistic form, originally indented into the piece and later raised with "U.S.A." added. All pieces made after 1937 were marked. Note - Pieces marked “R.R.P.Co., Roseville, Ohio” are NOT genuine Roseville.
COLLECTING ROSEVILLE Interest in collecting Roseville began in the late 1960’s but, as interest increased, more pieces were drug out of closets and off of mantles and the market became flooded with Roseville. This caused the collectors to concentrate on only the finest examples and, in the 1990s, the internet flooded the market again, causing prices of the most common lines to drop, like Magnolia, Clematis and Snowberry. The less common patterns, such as Pine Cone, Fuschia and Moss have increased in value. The most desired pieces are the “Trial Wares” that were made when the company tried to make a different piece or a different color and just a few pieces were made. These pieces are usually marked with letters and numbers on the bottom in blue ink.
FAKE ROSEVILLE The novice collector needs to be very careful when buying Roseville. The first fakes were very poorly made and colored, but, as the word got out about what to look out for, the cheaters made the corrections. Often, a fake will have the size but not the shape number, or will have a Roseville mark on a piece that the factory didn't mark. Some Chinese fakes have the name but no size or shape numbers and many fakes have flowers that Roseville never used. The best place to check for fakes is the Roseville Exchange at www.ohioriverpottery.com/roseville_exchange/roseville. This site shows fakes side by side with original pieces.
MORE INFORMATION There have been about a dozen books written about Roseville in the past 30 years but most of them are out of print. Current price guides, and the ones used for this article, are: Warman’s Roseville Pottery, 2nd Edition, by Denise Rago, whose father, Dave Rago, is an appraiser on the Antiques Roadshow, $24.99 Introducing Roseville, 2nd Edition, by Mark Bassett, $39.95 Understanding Roseville by Mark Bassett. A very in-depth book for the advanced collector, $39.95 Roseville in all it’s Splendor by the Bomm family, comprised mostly of pages from Roseville factory catalogs $39.95 Bassett’s RosevIlle Prices, a pocket sized, (4" by 8 1/2") that fits easily in a pocket, purse or auto glove compartment, $ 9.95 All of these books are available from THE BOOKWORM.

GRUENE HISTORIC DISTRICT AT THE WATER TOWER A Natonal Register District Since 1975
Calendar of Events • Summer 2017 EVERYDAY: Riding the River & Live Tunes at Gruene Hall • Beat the heat with the cool water of the Guadalupe River. Whether you choose an inner toob, a raft or a canoe, jump in the water and enjoy a leisurely float along one of Central Texas’ most beautiful waterways. Contact outfitters Rockin ‘R’ River Rides at 830-629-9999 or Gruene River Company at 830-625-2800 for information. Dry off and head on over to Gruene Hall! Gruene Hall features live music everyday year ‘round. Most shows are free Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Friday and Saturday evenings are generally ticketed or cover shows. For band schedule and availability, visit www.GrueneHall.com or call 830-606-1601. FRIDAY AFTERNOONS: Friday Afternoon Club at Gruene Hall • A Gruene Hall tradition, now in its 19th year, where hipsters, oldsters, suits, locals and drifters mix it up to start their weekend rite (pun intended!). This quintessential Friday happy hour celebrates the warmer weather with great beer prices, prize giveaways and the best in Texas tunes, broadcasted live by KNBT 92.1FM Radio New Braunfels. There’s even a very special guest interview each week. Some that have stopped by for a chat have included Ray Benson, Steve Earle, Delbert McClinton, Radney Foster, Hayes Carll, Ray Price and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Good times! JUNE 11, JULY 9: Gospel Brunch with a Texas Twist in Gruene Hall • In the tradition of a New Orleans-style gospel brunch, we are serving up awe-inspiring gospel music featuring The Gospel Silvertones and Bret Graham coupled with a mouth-watering buffet, catered by Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar. Brunch hours are 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. For information or to purchase tickets, visit our website at www.GrueneHall.com, or call 830-629-5077, or toll free from San Antonio 830-606-1601, or stop by Gruene Hall in person. Advance tickets are recommended. JUNE 15, JULY 20: Come & Taste It • Sample Texas’ best wines and craft brews at The Grapevine in Gruene Historic District. On the third Thursday of each month throughout the year (except January), a featured winemaker showcases three of their newest released, top selling or hardest to find wines, alongside a fraft brew handpicked by The Grapevine Staff. The complimentary tastings are held on the patio and garden of this popular tasting room. Samples of food that is offered for sale will be provided, and each event features live music and three prize giveaways. This is a great opportunity to learn directly from the winery and The Grapevine Staff, engage with other visitors interested in wine and beer and enjoy the natural surroundings and all other offerings of Gruene Historic District. For more information, call 830-606-0093 or visit www.GrapevineInGruene.com .
