All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU” area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us”. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification”, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. MILK GLASS by Len Waska While one popular belief holds that Milk Glass was invented by the French in the 17th Century, another belief is that it originated in Venice in the 16th Century. The truth is that Milk Glass is much older than that. Milk glass existed in Egypt in 1500 B.C. Milk glass snuff bottles have been found from about 140 B.C. and archeologists excavating Persian cities from 635 A.D. discovered milk glass bottles and vases. The famous Portland Vase, in dark cobalt blue with applied milk glass figurines is from the First Century A.D. All that France did was to make milk glass popular in recent centuries. The first milk glass made in America was made in Jamestown, Virginia in 1609 and were beads made to trade with the Native Americans. In 1612, Italian Antonio Neri published a book with the formula for making a milk white glass and, in the 1760s, a form of glass called “Bristol Glass” was produced in England and was decorated with hand painting, transfers and gold. By the mid 1800s, milk glass was extremely popular in England and was often considered to be a sign of wealth, partly because it looked like porcelain. In France, milk glass was called “opaline” and in America, it was known as “opalware”, with one of the most popular manufacturers being the C. F. Monroe Company whose opalware was named “Wave Crest”. The name “Milk Glass” was coined during the Victorian era. Interest in milk glass started in France in the 1800s and peaked between 1895 and 1910. Interest was revived in the late 1950s, partly due to Fenton developing their “Hobnail” pattern, and a lot of pieces were produced for florists to be used as bud vases.

SHAPES The shapes that milk glass has been molded into are almost endless. Through the years, as glass houses went out of business, their molds were bought and re-used by other companies, often with no identifying marks, making it difficult to determine who the actual maker was. In the 1840s, candle holders in the shape of dolphins were very popular. Other popular shapes of the mid 19th Century were arches, blocks, and ferns. In the 1880s, candy dishes and figures were popular. At the same time that milk glass was reaching its popularity, Early American Pattern Glass was reaching it's peak and 97 of those patterns were produced in milk glass also. Many milk glass pieces were made to commemorate famous people and specific events, and many prominent people had it produced in their honor in the form of busts,casserole dishes and platters. Hundreds of plates were made in all shapes including plates made for the 1908 presidential campaign of William Howard Taft and William Jennings, but plate collectors should look out for a plate with 13 stars and a portrait of George Washington. In 1949 only two original plates were known to exist, making them probably the most expensive pieces of milk glass in existence, but Westmoreland made a lot of reproductions of it, so be careful when you buy one. After the War Between the States, animals and birds were popular subjects and many other events influenced patterns. The Spanish American War resulted in covered dishes shaped like ships and busts of Admiral Dewey. When the Transatlantic Cable was laid, many milk glass pieces were made to resemble the cable, and the deaths of Presidents Lincoln and Garfield inspired drapery patterns. While milk glass was never produced in complete dinner sets consisting of dinner plates, salad plates, bowls and cups and saucers, most of the early pieces were functional, such as plates, cake stands,banana stands, pitchers,punch bowls, covered dishes and cruets, but one of the most popular shapes was the “Hen On The Nest”. This shape was so popular that it was made by over half of the glass houses and was made to hold mustard. One of the more rare pieces of milk glass was the owl shaped canning jar with a zinc lid with a milk glass eagle insert.This piece sells for about$ 125 even though the maker is unknown.

MILK GLASS COLORS Most of the 19th Century milk glass is a deep white in color, more opaque than the 20th Century products. Milk glass has been made in colors other than white, like pink, yellow, blue, black, brown,amethyst, marble glass and the extremely rare chartreuse green, with blue running close to white in collecting. Most of the older French glass is said to be a “grayish white”. Most collectors believe that all old milk glass has a color they refer to as “ﬁre” when held in natural sunlight. While this is true for most of the older glass, a lot of the newer glass also has the ﬁre and a quite a lot of older pieces do not have it. It all depends on the iridized salts that the manufacturer added to the batch that produces the halo of red,blue and green. It’s called the “Tyndall Scattering Mechanism”. The salts, usually bone ash, tin dioxide , arsenic, cryolite or antimony compounds, have a refractive index quite different from the glass matrix itself. The size and density of the included salts control the overall effect from mild opalization to an opaque white, causing the pass through light to appear as a completely different color than the object itself. (Aren't you sorry you asked?) In general, the deeper the white, the better the quality, but the arsenic added to the batches in the 1880s produced pieces that were “duller” in color and some of those pieces are especially valuable. Milk glass has often been used for architectural decoration when the purpose is to display information. A good example is the milk glass faces from the clock in Grand Central Station in New York City which are now on display in the Smithsonian Institute.

MANUFACTURERS Due to its popularity, milk glass was made by almost every glass house in the, country at one time or another. They include Vallerystahl, Atterbury and Co., Gillinder, Hogan & Co, Tremont Glass Works, McKee & Co, .McKee Brothers, the Canton Glass, Fenton, Westmoreland, Kanawha Glass Works, Fostoria, Challinoor, Taylor & Co, Anchor Hocking, Federal, L.E. Smith, Richards & Hartley, Mosser and many others. None of the glass houses marked their glass with the exception of a few pieces made by Fenton. McKee and Westmoreland. Marked pieces bring higher prices. COLLECTOR TIPS 1. Check values periodically to be sure you are adequately insured. 2. Any paint, even if damaged, should be left alone. 3. The best pieces are “Flame Polished”, reheated to appear smoother. 4. Milk glass doesn’t take well to temperature changes. Store in a cool place and don’t subject it to dishwashers or hot water. 5. If it appears to have a “ﬁlm” on it, don’t buy it. It can’t be saved. 6. Almost all of the pieces made after 1960 are of a lesser quality. 7. Become familiar with the various patterns of milk glass. Pick up a book with lots of pictures. 8. Like we have told you before here in ANTIQUING TEXAS, if you don’t know the glass that well, make sure you know your dealer. If they don’t appear to know a lot about it, ﬁnd another dealer.

Contains hundreds of pictures of popular pieces.and Milk Glass by E. M. Belknap. Published in 1949, this book concentrates on more of the rare milk glass pieces. Although it s 70 years old, this is by far the most comprehensive book on milk glass with over 500 photos and should be on every collectors “must have” list. AUTHOR’S NOTE: With the exception of the Owl canning jar and the Wave Crest box, all pictures here are from Belknap's 1949 book.

Building of the library building began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was designed as an adaptation of the Foundling Hospital for Children of Florence, Italy which was designed by Brunelleschi. It became the city library after a time as a post ofﬁce.in 1968.

The wonderful Hill County Courthouse built in 1890 from Bell County limestone The cost was $83,000. The architect was W. C. Dodson from Waco who designed a number of public buildings. After the massive ﬁre in 1993 on New Years Day, the citizens of Hill County decided to restore the structure. Willie Nelson held two concerts to help raise money for the restoration.

Hill County Cell Block Museum is located one block north of the Courthouse in the old county jail house (1893-1983). The museum was also designed by the architect who designed the courthouse, W.C. Dodson. It is open each Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. from April through October and by special appointments.
