NDGA National Glass Museum Glass on display from the Victorian Era (1800’s) up through Mid-Century Modern with the emphasis on the Depression Era. There is a section of children’s dishes, kitchen items, paperweights, lost children pitcher collection, candlestick collection, a case of carnival glass and much, much more! Displays are changed out periodically as new collections are donated. Whether you are an experienced collector, new to the fascinating world of collecting glass or just want to be enthralled by the beauty and history of American glass there is something for everyone. We have a reference library and gift shop as well as seminars. The museum also participates in Wellington’s First Friday each month where merchants invite artists to come into their shops to display their wares from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Refreshments are usually served for your enjoyment.

Stretch Glass Exhibit at the NDGA National Glass Museum Coming April 29th and running through July 2016 The Stretch Glass Society has announced a year-long, nationwide celebration of “A century of handmade stretch glass in America.” Stretch Glass is a pressed or blown-molded glass that has little or no pattern and is sprayed with metallic salt mix while hot. It is reheated and usually reshaped after the iridescence has been applied. When finished, the glass will have either a cobweb iridescence effect or a satiny iridescence effect. We are pleased to announce that the Stretch Glass Society has chosen the NDGA National Glass Museum to place one of their exhibits for those visiting to learn about and enjoy. They will be giving away a beautiful contemporary topaz opalescent footed bowl at the end of the exhibit. All you need to do to win is stop by the museum to see this spectacular exhibit. Those who enter will also receive two free copies of the Stretch Glass Society Quarterly via e-mail. We would love to have you come by and visit the Museum and sign up for this spectacular prize.

KITCHEN COLLECTIBLES Part Five, by Len Waska In this ﬁnal installment on Kitchen Collectibles we’ll start with one of the most common kitchen utensils and ﬁnish with a machine that freed up the housewife and made the family dog do the work.

ROLLING PINS One of the earliest known kitchen baking utensils, shown in an illustration from the 1800s, and probably in existence long before that, the rolling pin has not changed much in hundreds of years. All early rolling pins were made of wood, carved and later turned on machines to have handles on one or both ends. The earliest problem was the wood used because some woods, like pine, are soft and absorb ingredients and soon become smelly. After all, who wants to eat chocolate chip cookies that were rolled out with a pin that makes them smell like garlic or onions? Over time, rolling pins have been made from wood, glass, metal, porcelain, marble and glazed stoneware and have come in several variations including hollow glass tubes that can be ﬁlled with water or ice to prevent sticking. In December 1903, a patent was issued for the “Harkness Not Stick” rolling pin that had a mesh compartment to hold dusting ﬂour to prevent sticking.

KNIFE SHARPENERS Early cutting tools were sharpened by rubbing the cutting edges with stones and, when the hand cranked grinder was invented, a common street scene was the pushcart with the peddler who would sharpen your knives or scissors while you wait. Since then, various tools have been invented to simplify knife sharpening, ranging from hardened steel pieces that the housewife drew the knife edge over to the electric knife sharpener found in many modern kitchens.

JAR OPENERS With improvements in health care and people living to older ages, more people ﬁnd it difﬁcult to be able to open jars with screw on lids. This problem was recognized shortly after the fruit jar with the screw on lid was invented and, in the 1870s, several tools were invented to make the task easier. They all used two pieces that clamped on the lid and had long handles acting as levers, saving wear and tear on hands weakened by age or years of hard manual labor.

KITCHEN COLLECTIBLES Part Five continued PASTA MAKERS In the late 1700s, macaroni was a highly fashionable food in France and, when he was the United States minister to France in 1787, Thomas Jefferson had his secretary, William Short, purchase a macaroni machine. Unfortunately, it was poorly designed and soon broke, so Thomas Jefferson designed his own. He built his machine and only used it in his own home, but his observation proved that pasta machines existed in the early 18th Century. In 1824, the first pasta factory was built in Italy by the Agnese family. The employees kneaded the dough with their feet, much like grapes are crushed for making wine. King Ferdinand II visited the factory and was so shocked at the sight of people’s feet making his food, that he commissioned Cesare Spadaccini to mechanize the process. Somewhere between 1833 and 1834, he unveiled a machine that used bronzed mechanical legs to replace the human feet. Soon after, engineers designed an attachment to use a water wheel to turn the device and many more pasta factories soon sprung up. In 1906, Angelo Vitantonio, an Italian who immigrated to Ohio, invented the first “official” pasta machine and quickly became a hero in the pasta loving community. While his first machine was hand cranked, it didn’t take long for someone to add an electric motor to eliminate the crank and, although automated, today’s commercial pasta machines still rely on Spadaccini and Vitantonio’s ideas. No matter what element is used, the ingredients determine the quality of the pasta. Pastas made from Durum Wheat and traditional spices always rate higher in the flavor department that pasta made from stale flour and common table salt.

CHURNS In an earlier part of our series on Kitchen Collectibles, we mentioned churns and pictured some hand held models. Since then, we have run across a copy of the 1895 Montgomery Ward catalog that offered churns powered by dogs, goats or sheep and we show that advertisement as well as one for a double dog powered cream separator and a couple ads for machinery powered by horses to provide power to almost anything.

Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Comfort, Texas Celebrating July 4th!

The Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for Comfort’s annual celebration of the 4th of July. This year it will be held on Saturday, July 2nd, so that visitors who must travel on July 4th won’t miss out on the fun! The day begins with the Parade at 10:00 AM. The parade lines up on Idlewilde Boulevard, heads down Highway 27 to High Street, down High Street to 5th, and 5th to Broadway. Great BBQ dinner will be served by volunteers from Gaddis Methodist Church from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the park. You won’t want to miss the live music, booths, activities, games and fun for the whole family there! At 2:00 PM the action moves downtown, but don’t let the distant keep you away. If the four-block walk to 7th and High Streets presents a problem for you, no worries! There will be carts to transport you, where you can enjoy the sounds of big band swing music, more food if you’re still hungry, shopping, and raffles every hour for $700 worth in gift certificates offered by Comfort businesses. But you have to be present to win – so stick around, enjoy the day, and support the local businesses!
