Azle & Burleson Antique Malls and his wife, Isabelle, have recently opened a new shop! + + + + + Everything in the store is from New England, and everything is old — You won’t find any crafts or candles here. You will find full-size buggies & sleighs, primitive and Victorian furniture, wonderful country smalls and Art Deco treasures, architecturals from weathervanes to tin ceilings to wide pine boards, hardware & tools, a great selection of ephemera & postcards, toys, kitchenware, glass & stoneware, advertising, cats & dogs, early clothing and old worn rugs. Need a 19th-century dog treadmill? We’ve got it. We’re next door to the 16,000-sq. ft. Azle Antique Mall, only 20 minutes from downtown Fort Worth.

ATTENTION GLASS COLLECTORS! The National Depression Glass Association has announced a new program to help glass collectors identify their finds. All the collector has to do is go to the National Depression Glass Association’s website www.ndga.net, and in the “MENU area in the upper left corner, click on “Contact us. On the screen that appears, click on “I would like help with glass identification, enter your name and email address and attach a photo of the piece you’d like identified. Your inquiry will be forwarded to one of our many volunteers, each of whom specializes in a specific glassware field such as Early American Pattern Glass, Depression Glass, Elegant Glass, etc. Since these are volunteers, please keep in mind that it might take a few days for them to research your glassware and send a response. Remenber that the National Depression Glass Association does not appraise or purchase glassware.

THE FURNITURE OF JOHN HENRY BELTER Part Two by Len Waska, Antique Furniture Restoration Last month ANTIQUING TEXAS brought you the impact John Henry Belter had on the American Furniture market, the style he worked in, and information about his patents and the materials he used. This month we’ll tell you how to determine if Grandma’s old chair is worth a fortune or if it’s just another nice antique that should be passed down through your family.
IDENTIFYING BELTER’S WORK This is an extremely difficult task, because very few furniture makers clearly identified their work, possibly in hopes that the buyer would think it was made by Belter, and while several chairs have been found with paper labels attached to the bottom, a large number of pieces have been reupholstered in the past 80 years and the labels were discarded. Several tables exist bearing Belter’s labels and the beds covered by his patent have the name embossed in the wood. A double parlor set exists in Rosalie mansion in Natchez, Mississippi that was supposedly purchased from Belter by the mansion owner’s daughter while studying in New York in 1859 or 1860 but no invoice exists, however several pieces with identical carving are in private homes elsewhere and they bear Belter labels. That design is now called the “Rosalie” pattern and is the most commonly found Belter pattern. Many of the labels show different addresses, indicating that Belter made that pattern over several years. The Texas governor’s mansion has a set of elaborately carved pieces that are documented as Belter because an original bill of sale exists showing that Belter made two sets of parlor furniture for the Jordan brothers and one of the sets is now in the governor’s mansion. Although Belter’s labels say he made “All kinds of fine furniture”, all of the surviving pieces show a concentration on Rococo Revival parlor sets with limited quantities of hall, bedroom, library and dining room pieces. Belter’s work was of the highest quality, the most elaborately carved, and used more layers of veneer. While his competitors used three to five layers, Belter always used 6 or more layers and more where really deep carving was required. One piece exists with twenty two layers of laminate.
THE LAMINATION PROCESS To obtain the strength required for Belter’s elaborate carving, paper thin sheets of wood were glued together with the grain of adjoining sheets laid diagonally to each other, it was then steam heated under pressure and bent and molded into three dimension curves by placing the heated wood in metal forms, called “cauls”, until the glue cooled. The result was incredibly strong and allowed extremely fine carving. It has been said that when customers questioned the strength of such a thin piece of wood, Belter would throw a chair from the window of his second story office to show that they don’t break.
NOT ALL “BELTER” IS BELTER Almost since the 1860s, the name “Belter” has become a catch-all phrase for all pierce-carved furniture. In the 1960s and 1970s, Gloria and Richard Manney accumulated the largest collection of Belter furniture in the country, and Marvin Schwartz, Edward Stanek and Douglas True spent many hours and drove many miles across the country examining all suspected Belter pieces. The result was a book explaining the results of their extensive work. Although it is possible that many furniture companies made laminated furniture, the book puts most of the surviving furniture in two groups. One group was definitely made by Belter and most of the other group is weakly attributed to the factory of J. and J. W. Meeks. The defining difference between the group is the fact that Belter always used extremely thin sheets of veneer, usually measuring around .055 to .063 inches thick (about 1/16 of an inch), while the other group used much thicker wood, closer to 1/8 inch, and Belter always used six to nine layers of veneer, while the other group has only three to five layers.
Continued on Page 23
PAGE 23
Continued from Page 22 Though not always hard and fast rules, the following differences can be used to help identify genuine Belter pieces from the rest: Not all Belter pieces were laminated, but on the laminated ones, the edges are tapered, not cut straight across the grain. Belter chairbacks are attached to the seat so the outer layer of laminate feathers into the apron. Arms and legs on Belter sofas and chairs are carved from single pieces of wood. Some Belter pieces have applied carving glued on. Belter’s pierce-carved pieces are generally outlined by sweeping, interconnected “arabesques”, rarely incorporating “C” scrolls, while the thickly laminated pieces use a lot of “C” scrolls. Belter rear legs generally have non-circular cross sections while the thickly laminated pieces have round back legs Most Belter chairs have casters on all four legs, usually made of brass with hollow brass wheels. Most of the thickly laminated chairs had casters only on the front legs with rubber, wood or brass rollers. Belter laminated furniture always has the laminations placed with the grain at right angles to each other with a very thin layer occasionally placed as the outer layer for cosmetic purposes. Thickly veneered furniture generally has at least two adjacent internal layers of parallel grain. Belter tables have fruit, nuts and flowers in the finials on the stretchers. Thickly laminated tables do not have flowers. Most thickly laminated tables have patterns that match the seating furniture. Belter tables do not. Belter chair backs fit into the seat rails so the back envelops the rear seat rail. Thickly laminated chairs have backs that mount on top of the seat rail. The simple possession of thin or thick laminations is not enough evidence for attribution, but must be considered with other evidence, and the above conclusions for “thickly laminated” furniture do not apply to all furniture with thick laminations, but specifically to pieces attributed to the works of J. and J.W. Meeks. In short, just because the seller calls it “Belter” does not make it Belter. John Henry Belter died from tuberculosis in October of 1863, leaving behind a widow and five children. His three brothers-in-law renamed the business “Springmeyer Brothers”, but the mass produced, machine-made furniture resulting from the Industrial Revolution and the post Civil War economy made the hand crafted furniture too expensive, and the brothers were forced to declare bankruptcy in 1867 and tastes had switched to the Renaissance Revival style which was soon followed by Eastlake style, making the Rococo Revival furniture “old fashioned”. While it is rumored that Belter died a pauper, his estate was worth $ 24,193.10 plus some property. For more detailed information on Belter furniture, the best book dedicated exclusively to Belter’s work is “The Furniture of John Henry Belter and the Rococo Revival”, written by Marvin Schwartz, Edward Stanek and Douglas True and featuring color photos of many of the fabulous Gloria and Richard Manney collection of Belter pieces. For more information on Rococo furniture made by Belter and his many contemporaries, pick up a copy of “American Furniture of the 19th Century”, by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. The bulk of the information in this article came from those two books. Stay tuned to ANTIQUING TEXAS next month as we cover the furniture made by Prudent Mallard, New Orleans' finest cabinet maker. TO REFINISH or NOT TO REFINISH THAT IS THE QUESTION by Len Waska, Antique Furniture Restoration With apologies to Shakespeare for stealing a line from Hamlet, that question pops up every few weeks when people inherit family heirlooms and want to preserve them for their children and grandchildren. The problem is that they get mixed messages from television. The appraisers on ANTIQUE ROADSHOW always claim that it diminishes the value when a piece is refinished, then they watch Rick Dale on AMERICAN RESTORATION completely redoing everything he touches to make it look better than new. Which story is right ? Actually, both are correct, depending on the piece being considered. The first thing to consider is its age. What the Roadshow people fail to mention is that, unless it’s a rare example, almost all of the furniture they show was hand made by skilled craftsmen before 1850. They seldom show any furniture made after about 1850 because, with the Industrial Revolution of the mid 1800s, most of the furniture after then was mass-produced by machinery and unskilled labor, rather than being hand made by skilled craftsmen, and they made thousands of identical pieces. Except for a few cabinetmakers like John Henry Belter and Prudent Mallard, who catered to wealthy clients and refused to lower their standards with mass produced furniture, most of the other furniture makers of the day made all of their furniture with machines. A second thing to consider is if it’s an American masterpiece made by a craftsman like Gustav Stickley, or if it was finished with a hand painted technique. Some pieces were made of lesser woods painted to look like tiger oak or bird’s eye maple. Before the Labor Movement of the late 1800s, skilled craftsmen would spend hours to achieve the look of the expensive woods, but after the unions demanded higher wages, it was cheaper to use the more expensive wood and lay off the workers. The same thing is happening now in the fast food industry. When “burger flippers” get paid $15 an hour, they’ll be replaced with robots and sent home, because the public will not be able to afford the more expensive hamburgers. Another thing to consider is the condition of the finish. It’s only purpose is to protect the wood. In the 1600s, the only finish on furniture was oils from handprints. It was discovered that a clear finish of any kind would not only protect the wood, but made it look much nicer. If the finish is not missing or damaged, a light cleaning is the best route to take. But if it’s badly damaged from wear or accidents with fingernail polish, it should be refinished. Always choose the least invasive method.
WHAT TO DO FIRST Carefully inspect it for labels or for any identifying marks to help you research it’s origin. We once had a customer bring us an heirloom that needed a complete restoration and we found a typed note telling who originally purchased the piece, where they bought it and when it was passed on to the next generation, and we often find labels where the piece was originally purchased. Unfortunately, a lot of “family legends” have it that “Grandma brought it from the old country”. Labels from the original furniture store where it was purchased blow holes in those family legends. One such legend was passed down in my own family when it was claimed that my Great Grandfather brought a cylinder music box with him when he came to America from Bohemia in 1862. The problem is that the music box has a tune that wasn’t written until the 1870s! Next, look at the overall quality of the wood and craftsmanship, including any carving. If it turns out to be a rare or valuable piece, leave it alone and contact a restoration specialist.
WHAT IS “PATINA” No, it’s not a hybrid petunia. Patina is the accumulation of grease, handprints, dirt, wear and furniture polish that build up to that make it look old. Most tried and true collectors value an original finish and a little patina, but if the patina looks “grungy”, a light cleaning will do a good job.
RESTORE OR REFINISH? When a piece is “refinished”, all of the old finish is removed, along with the accumulated patina, after which it is often stained to match the other pieces in the room where it will be displayed and a new finish is applied. A true “restoration” consists of preserving as much of the original piece as possible, including gently removing any furniture polish residue, without affecting the original finish, and often applying a new coat of the same finish to protect the original one. It is always better to restore a piece to it’s original state, rather than totally changing it or haphazardly patching it up. Many times, a gentle cleaning will suffice, but again, take care not to remove anything that might be seen as desirable patina. Most common pieces can indeed be refinished without affecting their value, but be sure to read up on it or consult an expert for advice.
HOW TO FIND SOMEONE TO DO THE WORK While someone may have been refinishing furniture for years, that doesn’t mean he does a good job. He may have been hacking furniture for years in an area that has a high turnover of one time customers, while the new guy on the next block may be one of the best in the business but is too new to have a reputation for quality. Your best bet is to ask around. Word of mouth is the best way to find out who does a good, job because a poor refinisher will have no return customers and word will get around fast if he does a bad job. When considering reworking a family heirloom, do your homework first or consult an expert before starting on it, and then, take the least invasive route.

GRUENE HISTORIC DISTRICT AT THE WATER TOWER
A Natonal Register District Since 1975
Calendar of Events • July 2017 EVERYDAY: Riding the River & Live Tunes at Gruene Hall • Beat the heat with the cool water of the Guadalupe River. Whether you choose an inner toob, a raft or a canoe, jump in the water and enjoy a leisurely float along one of Central Texas’ most beautiful waterways. Contact outfitters Rockin ‘R’ River Rides at 830-629-9999 or Gruene River Company at 830-625-2800 for information. Dry off and head on over to Gruene Hall! Gruene Hall features live music everyday year ‘round. Most shows are free Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Friday and Saturday evenings are generally ticketed or cover shows. For band schedule and availability, visit www.GrueneHall.com or call 830-606-1601. TUESDAY EVENINGS: Swing Dance Lessons • Learn simple, fun East Coast Swing steps in this one-hour class held before each Two Ton Tuesday show all summer long at Gruene Hall. This class is perfect for beginners or those wanting to polish their wraps, tunnels, turns and spins! The one-hour lesson begins at 6pm and is just $8 per person. You don’t even need a partner to join in on the fun! Hang around Gruene for dinner and try out your moves with popular rock-a-billy group Two Tons of Steel that evening. Call 830-606-1601 for more information. TUESDAY NIGHTS 22th Annual Two Ton Tuesdays • It wouldn’t be summertime without popular rock-a-billy band Two Tons of Steel holding court in Gruene Hall every Tuesday evening – and they’re back this year for the 20th summer in a row! If you haven’t caught Two Ton fever yet, grab your dancing shoes and get ready. The band takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. Come early for Swing Dance Lessons from 6pm to 7pm. Call Gruene Hall 830-606-1281 for more information. FRIDAY AFTERNOONS: Friday Afternoon Club at Gruene Hall • A Gruene Hall tradition, now in its 19th year, where hipsters, oldsters, suits, locals and drifters mix it up to start their weekend rite (pun intended!). This quintessential Friday happy hour celebrates the warmer weather with great beer prices, prize giveaways and the best in Texas tunes, broadcasted live by KNBT 92.1FM Radio New Braunfels. There’s even a very special guest interview each week. Some that have stopped by for a chat have included Ray Benson, Steve Earle, Delbert McClinton, Radney Foster, Hayes Carll, Ray Price and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Good times!
JULY 9: Gospel Brunch with a Texas Twist in Gruene Hall • In the tradition of a New Orleans-style gospel brunch, we are serving up aweinspiring gospel music featuring The Gospel Silvertones and Bret Graham coupled with a mouth-watering buffet, catered by Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar. Brunch hours are 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. For information or to purchase tickets, visit our website at www.GrueneHall.com, or call 830-629-5077, or toll free from San Antonio 830-606-1601, or stop by Gruene Hall in person. Call 830-832-1721 for information or visit www.GrueneMarketDays.com JULY 19, 20, 21 & 22: Gruene Hall presents Roger Creager’s Birthday Show. JULY 20: Come & Taste It • Sample Texas’ best wines and craft brews at The Grapevine in Gruene Historic District. On the third Thursday of each month throughout the year (except January), a featured winemaker showcases three of their newest released, top selling or hardest to find wines, alongside a fraft brew handpicked by The Grapevine Staff. The complimentary tastings are held on the patio and garden of this popular tasting room. Samples of food that is offered for sale will be provided, and each event features live music and three prize giveaways. This is a great opportunity to learn directly from the winery and The Grapevine Staff, engage with other visitors interested in wine and beer and enjoy the natural surroundings and all other offerings of Gruene Historic District.
