Black created an old time "country store" to commemorate the pioneer spirit of our early day settlers by providing authentic cash registers, scales, showcases, and fixtures, etc. There are also items that would have been sold in a country store including medicine bottles, lanterns, and metal gadgets. The store has been closed since the 1970's. Sandra Ward, Side By Side Estate Sales, will be taking bids on the complete contents of the store in it's original state during the month of September. The store is not open and will only be shown by appointment.

AMERICAN FURNITURE STYLES Through the Civil War

1620 to 1720: “Pilgrim Furniture” There were no factories in the country and all furniture was either imported from Europe or hand made out of whatever tree was outside the front door. European cabinetmakers immigrated to Boston, Philadelphia and New York.

1720 to 1755: QUEEN ANNE Style Characterized by curved legs, often with shell carving, chair backs were vase shaped, preferred woods were cherry and mahogany.

1755 to 1790: CHIPPENDALE Style Developed the “ball and claw” foot, chair legs were curved like Queen Anne, Chairs had intricately carved “ribbon” backs, tables usually had straight legs and leaves that dropped to allow the table to be placed along the wall, some sideboards had marble tops.

1780 to 1800: HEPPLEWHITE Style Mostly made from mahogany, chairs had backs shaped like shields, stetees were upholstered, much veneer was used.

1790 to 1830: DUNCAN PHYFE Style Double pedestal dining tables, heavy use of “reeded” legs (see Sheraton below), central pedestal drop leaf tables, elaborate carving, mostly mahogany. ANTIQUING TEXAS had a detailed article on Duncan Phyfe a few months ago.

1795 to 1820: SHERATON Style Emphasis was placed on vertical forms, lyre shapes, inlaid ovals, “reeding” (which looks like a bundle of sticks) was used along with “ﬂuting” which looks like rows of grooves, mahogany still the preferred wood, chairs had square backs.

1804 to 1840: EMPIRE Style French kings had such large egos that they had furniture styles designed just, for them. Following the path set by Louis XII, Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI, in 1804, Napoleon hired two architects to design furniture for his court. Stiff, heavy and formal, it was designed for looks, not for comfort. Called “pillar and scroll”, wood was mahogany, Chippendale’s ball and claw foot was carved to look like a hairy paw. No design on the surfaces, mostly veneered over lesser woods and in the past ﬁfty years, much of the veneer was stripped down to the pine secondary wood for the “country” look.

1820 to 1870: SPOOL FURNITURE Turned to resemble a string of spools or knobs, usually of maple stainred to look like mahogany, sometimes called “Elizabethan Revival” but more commonly known as “Jenny Lind”, after the singer billed by P. T. Barnum as the “Swedish Nightingale”.

1820 to 1850: GOTHIC Style Characterized by points and arches to resemble windows in cathedrals. Also had many crosses, trefoils (like a clover) and quatrefoils, which look like four leafed clovers. Mostly made of walnut Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901 and most of the furniture made during that time is called “Victorian”, but Victorian furniture consists of many styles, very few of which look like each other. The Industrial Revolution of the mid 1800s made great strides in machinery which made once complicated forms very inexpensive.

1840 to 1865: ROCOCO REVIVAL Style This style advocated curves, not straight lines, and shunned severe angles. Heavily carved with rocks, shells, leaves, ﬂora and fauna. Cabriole legs, bulging out at the knee, recessed inward and curved back out at the foot Woods were mahogany, walnut and rosewood, marble tops, fancy carved handles, rich fabrics. The ﬁnest pieces were pierce -carved to give a “lacy” appearance. The most famous manufacturers were John Henry Belter, who we told you about in the last two issues of ANTIQUING TEXAS, Prudent Mallard, who is written about in this issue, John Meeks and Alexander Roux. Be sure to pick up ANTIQUING TEXAS in the future, as we’ll be covering American furniture styles after the Civil War.

Come to the country

and ﬁnd antique treasures under the trees and in an historic German Turnverein that has been the center of social activities since 1879. Built to promote physical, spiritual and social life, the Turnverein provided the all male members with a place to practice their sport called Tureining similar to present day chinning the bar. By the 1930’s the practice had ended and the Turnverein became a meeting place on Sundays and hosted social functions such as dances. The 1902 original dance hall is a ﬁne example of construction methods the Germans brought with them from their homeland including a rare arch-type ceiling not typical for structures of this kind and not like others that are still standing. This building could tell us much about the life of the people living along the Fayette and Washington county line. Decendants of the original charter families and members of the community are dedicated to the preservation of this architectural and historic “jewel” so it may continue to serve the community for many years to come. The Turnverein is the perfect setting for La Bahia Antiques Show for dealers and collectors. This year, September 22 to September 30 are the dates for the Show & Sale. Some of the dealers will be setting up outside under the beautiful old trees. These dealers will offer quite a variety of merchandise such as Garden Architectural Items, Painted Furniture, Industrial, Advertising, Shabby Chic, Collectibles and Re-purpose Items and Wagons. Inside the hall, Flow Blue, American Primitives, Victorian, English Antiques, American Linens, Vintage & Estate Jewelry, Elegant Glass, Silver Sets, Clocks, Vintage Lamps and Toys, Quilts, French Antiques, Collectibles, Repurpose Items & much more will be offered for sale to many of the eager buyers. Porcelain restoration at the show. Those who are looking for a particular item enjoy a country atmosphere, history, and the aroma of wonderful food cooking in the outside kitchen area, and are interested in seeing an unusual architectural building should make plans to visit the La Bahia Show. La Bahia is located 15 miles west of Brenham, Texas on Hwy. 290 W, 1/2 mile left on Texas 237. The location is only 7 miles from Round Top. Since the neighboring towns are also holding antique shows and sales on these same dates, this area is the place to be.
