Architecture of Interaction: Re-Thinking Moscow’s Apartments
Supervisor: Shenuka De Sylva
During the social transformation in the 1950’s through to the late 1980’s, thousands of Khrushchyovkas* were built in Moscow to cater for the social housing demand after the war. After nearly 70 years of occupation these housing developments and homes have become outdated, overrun and irreparable. The current government strategy is to forcibly relocate families from Khrushchyovkas to apartments of ‘equal size’ on the outskirts of Moscow. Even in the newer developments high-density living is seen as temporary and confined to specific life stages. This view is informed by the lack of social space and increase of narrow and dark spaces which are seen to compromise health and safety and is the result of ridged and stringent planning. This thesis proposes to incorporate the principles of social interaction such as passive contact and low intensity interaction opportunities; which is merely the ability to meet, see and hear and thereby to improve living conditions and bring back a sense community to high-density urban housing in Moscow. It argues that a new planning and design framework for high-density housing through low intensity social contact can promote greater social engagement, which can contribute to people’s well-being and happiness. The development of an urban and architectural framework for greater social interaction will look at creating opportunities for the interaction of people in public and semi-public space. This will provide a method for understanding how social contact can be combined with the provision of private and public space, while looking to promote safety, comfort and healthier living environments. It also recognises the importance of the public and semi-private spaces being governed by the residents and not private entities or individuals. This research focuses on the relationship between the built environment and social interaction within urban, neighbourhood, block and apartment scales. Exploration includes the interaction design approach, the role of connecting residents in supporting the community though culture, lighting, access and privacy, and how design of the built environment can strengthen sense of community. In classical multi-storey buildings it’s often a challenge to any sense of community that you only meet your neighbours in the lift or lobby. The aim is look at ways in how we design residential apartment blocks. This means the consideration of the design from the inside out, moving outwards in scales starting from the interior and working out to urban scale with the social qualities driving the design. This thesis will explore interaction potential at four different design levels and broken down into scales of interior, block, neighbourhood and urban. The breakdown in scales will allow working from the inside out, and from the scale of the people, allowing the small scale to reflect the larger scales in the design process. The entirety of the thesis investigation can be found at:

Interior (S) - Private: Interior scale focuses on private life in the apartment and ways of adaptable design, privatisation and modularity in turn which would affect the social interaction at larger scales of the project. The scale was limited to conjoined apartments, balcony and shared spaces outside the dwelling. To identify experience of living in Khrushchyovka and Microrayon, a questionnaire was developed aimed at adults and students from a range of backgrounds, but limited to ones who currently occupy one of the Khrushchyovka and newer series apartments. It was also limited to of how people experience the place; are the spaces favourable for social interaction; how the management of small floor space happen; what changes might they make. The information gathered determines experiences and knowledge of the place from different perspectives, which would aid in the developing a key framework for programme requirements and generation of design decisions.
One meeting point of interaction
Through the questionnaire results, it was discovered that many survey participants have been living in the apartments for several decades. Many of Khrushchyovka and new apartments were either passed down from family generations or given by government for free after demolition of old houses for land redevelopment. The information gathered, informed programme and design requirement such as: Interior: - Adaptable house layout - Climate control - Storage room Urban: - Public park proximity
Block: - Mutual surveillance - Maintenance of shared space - Natural lighting - Accessibility - Car parking
The questionnaire can be found on pages 29-40:
Neighbourhood: - Pedestrian intensification - Maintenance of vegetation, shared space and facilities - Automobile reduction

Initial stages of design began with small iterative blocks where dwelling planning was analysed and critiqued on how favourable the social interaction spaces it formed or weakened. A key principle in this design stage was developing mutual surveillance between apartments, where residents keep an eye out on each other inside and outside the block.
Leading to a common space
Leads away from social encounters
The development concluded at a series of interconnected units where the apartments offer a sense of identity and community to the residents. The variation ranges from 1, 2 or 3 room apartment, materials and differential balcony spaces that bring individuality to each apartment and support social interaction outside. Since whole apartments windows face the outdoor, privacy is not an issue, but through shared balconies, privacy and interior conditions are managed through the arrangement of windows and shading louvres hidden behind the recessed ceiling.
Lesser chance of contact
Each floor hosts two to four apartments, depending on the location of the communal area which takes up two units. Each block can host up to 28 spacious apartment spaced on the current footprint of a Khrushchyovka.
Least chance of contact Too many options
Microrayon [Микрорайон] - Micro district a large-scale residential complex which was the primary structural element of the residential area construction in the Soviet Union and in some post-Soviet states.

Block (M) - Semi Private: (Private)
Focuses on life within the building where the private balcony space can overlook and interact with other levels in the design scheme, supporting low intensity contact, territoriality and surveillance. The possibility for interior apartment and balcony modulation create different atmosphere and spaces for interaction - depending on the resident’s preferences, balconies will be designed up to their specifications but still maintain an interaction within the façade level. At most, balconies share 3 levels which allows for communication and interaction between these floors. Balconies on the 1st floor and around the communal areas are extended to the façade for structural and extension of floor space for the shared facilities. This favours for smaller communities of residents to engage within a certain and clearer defined space. The open able façade doors and windows allows for climate control during cold winters and hot summers but is also intended for allowing low and passive social contact. The residents can decide whether they want to hear children at play, or simply communication with their friend walking by the perimeter. Different variants of balconies provides different kinds of interaction: Single floor balcony creates for closer and intimate interaction due to peoples proximity. These balconies are placed around communal spaces in order to connect people and to serve as division for the building, creating smaller communities, and reducing noise and privacy issues. Two floor shared balcony, provides interaction between two neighbours. Not only are you a neighbour on one floor, but the floor above or below you. Three floor and final size of balcony arrangement connects many residents together at which it became challenging to provide social interaction at this scale. Due to the increased space, more noise and more privacy issues become apparent, therefore a three floor shared balcony is the largest in the design. Balconies are extended in different lengths. This allows for residents to look down between the façade and communicate with other residents on floors above or below them. The following images on pages 10 - 13 depict how social interaction may occur between the modular shared balcony iterations. The interactions vary from passive and low intensity contact, but with time, residents will get to catch up with one another more frequently than just passing by in the lobby or stairwell.

Neighbourhood (L) - Semi-public: Neighbourhood scale consist of life outside individual apartment blocks but limited to shared spaces and activities within the block. The spaces investigated were communal facilities, stairwell, lobbies and shared bridging between blocks. Communal areas serve as a basis for people to meet each resident. These areas can be adapted to social, commercial or educational facilities. This is followed on from questionnaires needs and wants from shared communal facilities. The development is flexible enough to accommodate a range of offices and stores and thus include social economic activities (which are often absent or poorly designed in many residential housing in Moscow) to improve the social relationship of its residents and bring in more visitors to the suburb. Communal areas take up two apartment floor spaces and split the building in order to create separate, smaller communities and create a central meeting platform. The lobby on each floor has three different options depending on the floor layout that define the threshold from public to private space. The addition of a setback, creates a space for residents desire to decorate and personalise their hallway. Shared space creates richness created by the inhabitants through their use and their personal decoration which allows for a shared space to be owned by the residents in the core of the apartment. The feature stairwell and courtyard provides passive contact and the ability to see and hear people outside the building. Differential sizes of setbacks, create pause space for the residents, to stop by and interact. As the landing overhang becomes smaller, it provides a chance to overlook at the bottom floors and the ability see and hear the other residents on lower floors. Bridging between apartments is provided at multiple levels depending on the length of the block, as well as courtyard and central meeting areas for gathering opportunities. Pause space between blocks provides residents with avoiding any uncertain interaction. It is important to have these intermediate spaces between to provide an undemanding social interaction. The importance of these spaces is that it connects three apartments blocks together through the bridging within. Residents don’t have to leave the apartment block to visit another neighbour in another block but instead meet in the middle, and in possibility meet another neighbour from the floor above. These common spaces are well lit with skylight incorporation, that passes down through to the courtyard creating a favourable space that would encourage interaction between residents. By providing the generosity of space, multiple uses and freedom of use for both outside and inside the apartment allowing residents to feel connected to their shared space. This creates the atmosphere of space shared as a whole, which provides relation to the surrounding neighbours.

The urban framework focuses on the block development as a whole through. Connection to the surrounding Microrayons was a main driver for the urban plan and is achieved though pedestrian traffic and footpaths connecting the districts together. The split site allows for greater community control through territoriality where each neighbourhood is focused between two to four blocks. Proximity of green spaces between the apartment buildings provides foster areas for social activities, producing noise and a sense of interaction among urban residents. The minimization of car roads on site allows for the neighbourhood to be more pedestrian friendly with traffic access only from the perimeter of the site while the wider roads accessible for emergency and building services. The underground car parking plan is accessed only from one point of the building, reducing the amount of traffic going around the building and accessible only from main road.

This projects proposes a new light rail network hub for Royal Oak in Auckland. Following the possible plans for the future light rail network, it was an opportunity to redevelop the suburban central hub to existing and future residents and visitors. The hub contains the main facade which is supported by four structural columns that faces the light rail network and provides zones for shelter and social interactions as the commuters linger. The repetition of the facade captures the industrial characteristics of the site but also provides passive environmental control within the space. To integrate the development into the community, the hub serves a rage of spaces such as; commercial facilities circulating the courtyard space, office spaces, residential accommodation and car parking supporting the structural grid. The public spaces located on the ground floor are connected through two green corridor walkways, aligned to face the volcanic view shafts across Auckland. Full project can be found at:

Humming Hataitai
Tutor: Sam Kebbell
The Humming Hataitai social space is an open program development that provides the neighborhood with a community contact point that is integrated with shared working, learning and creative spaces for the student demographic, while providing bar, cafes and a multi-functional theatre space for the local residents and visitors. These activities are integrated around a central courtyard space and connecting the two street fronts together though public walkways along the perimeter of the building facade. Hataitai’s predominantly residential housing finished with gable roof structure was the main drive for the facade repetition. The implemented prefabricated angled stucco facade, reacts to the sites environmental conditions as the light progresses through the elbow space of the facade, continually changing the way the building blends on site. This formal quality provides an aesthetic style that is unique to Hataitai.

Sound Distillation Pavilion
Tutor: Simon Twose
The project is an experimentation with distilling sound around the Kelburn Hub into a pavilion space. The acoustic atmosphere morphed the design outcome in a way that the site’s sound condition is reacting and integrated into the various geometries of the design. The pavilion draws its overall form from low and high frequencies based on the surrounding environment such as crowds, automobiles, vegetation and structures that were then simplified in to continuous, predictable, random and reflecting sound. This play with sound articulates contrasting pavilion spaces that reflects each unique interior and exterior condition.

New Zealand Earthquake Museum
Lecturers: Daniele Abreu e Lima & Andrew Charleson
The New Zealand Earthquake Museum is located on the waterfront of Hataitai, Wellington. The concept of debris and rubble has been integrated into the spatial form and reinforced by the concrete structural elements of the design. The overall form reflects destruction while the exposed structure represents restoration. The facade reveals three different exposure zones which depicts the main three programme zones; exhibition space, memorial and educational and commercial facilities. The exhibition space is split across multiple levels where the lower levels are confined and progress to light as you pass through the journey. On the contrast, the memorial space is accessible to all elements through its circulation and develops different emotions to the visitors based on the sites daily environmental condition. Educational and commercial facilities are allocated around the perimeter of the design to provide more communal and day lit spaces.

The project was to develop the Earthquake Museum not only to the natural disaster but to New Zealand as well. Earthquake Museum will host three main activities; a permanent exhibition about earthquakes in New Zealand, a memorial to their victims, and an education space to preparedness for major disasters. The building has to be developed using reinforced concrete as main structure system and as the main formal language.

New Zealand School of Music
Lecturers: Daniele Abreu e Lima & Andrew Charleson
The New Zealand School of Music is located on the corner of Leeds and Ghuznee Street and is inspired by the arts and creativity of Cuba Street and surrounding historical industrial neighbourhood. The form of the building continued the idea of hidden corners and pathways that can be found a street and inherits them as part of the design that allows social interaction within the public spaces of the building. This alleyway split leads the guests to a centralized courtyard circulation space that links all the programmes as a whole. The programmes include: Two auditorium spaces which are sunk beneath the building provide minimal acoustic discomfort to neighbours and students; Library cantilevered over a public gathering space for maximum daylight efficiency; Teaching and practice areas are split across the two wings of the facade and interconnected through bridge-ways that allow contact at the ground level.
