Welcome To My House & Home the

Fall Decorating Trends EG: What color combinations would you suggest to someone looking for the next step in modern? Mitchell: Here are three we’d want to live with: Black, white, and tan, with natural accents like raw wood, marble, and petrified stone French sensibility, which we saw in the style of Brigitte Bardot, while others have what has been described as our “authentic American style.” We were also inspired by the sets and costumes of two recent films that take place in the late-70s — Rush and American Hustle. EG: Do you have any favorite pieces that really speak to you for Fall? Mitchell: Our new Directoire chair is a standout finished in polished-brass or stainless-steel. It’s the perfect modern director’s chair, sized to sit beside a sofa and infused with our trademark comfort. You can upholster it in fabric, leather, or Tibetan fur for a fashion look. Who wouldn’t want to direct the story of their life in that? And since fall’s so much about entertaining for us, a bar cart or bar cabinet is a must, from both a fashion and function viewpoint. To give a room a sophisticated look, add a piece like our acrylic and stainless Art Decoinspired Melrose bar cart. We also love oversized mirrors, with frames you can upholster in the fabric or leather of your choice and detail with nailhead trim. This season, we covered one in a great menswear tweed with nickel nailheads, and did a trio of squares in spice velvet. We also make a fabric- or leather-covered bookcase that you can give a custom look. EG: Where do you stand on accessorizing? Bob: Definitely less is more. We find ways to add layers and details without creating clutter. Quality stands out.
EG: What are the most important basics in a room, and if you had to compare them to items of clothing, how would they be dressed? In other words, if great jeans,a white T-shirt and black leather loafers are your go-to look, what is your ideal room wearing? Mitchell: At the heart of the room: either our classic square-arm sofa (named Alex) or roll-arm sofa (called Alexa), slipcovered in crisp white denim. Then a pair of chairs, one in a great graphic pattern and the other in rich black leather. We’d go for cleanlined iconic modern occasional tables, a media console, and a bar cabinet. From there you can dress the room up or down with accessories, and change with the seasons or if the mood strikes.
ANGELA SUSAN ANTON In today’s world, life can often feel rushed and complicated. One of the best ways to cope is by finding ways to liven up the place you lay your head at night. This is why I’ve decided to launch Angela Susan Anton’s House & Home, what I envision to be the first of many periodic special sections that will, I hope, give our readers some great ideas about remaking their surroundings. Inside, you’ll find some wonderful suggestions about ways to make over your kitchens and landscaping along with pointers revolving around other facets of interior design. We’ve reached out to some of
Long Island’s foremost experts on design to help make House & Home a collection of useful advice for anyone looking to beautify their surroundings. Rich Abate of Hicks Nurseries gives tips on quick ways to nurture and upgrade the look of your yard, Andy Newman sits down with the namesake of Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly, Inc., about what is trending in kitchens and Eloise Goldman chats with Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, whose home furnishings brand is celebrating a quarter century of success, about accessorizing, color combinations and the crucial components that make up the ideal room. We also tell Antiques Roadshow fans about the art and antiques valuation day that Old Westbury Gardens is hosting and the chance that the odd curio you might have floating around your house just might be a financial windfall waiting to happen. It’s quite the rich and engaging mixed bag that I hope you’ll enjoy and be able to take something away.
EG: How can you make a room feel sexy? Bob: Two words: texture and shimmer. Fabrics that not only look good but have a great hand, like velvet, leather, shearling, Tibetan wool, suede, silk. Color-wise, try deeper jewel tones; we like rich ink purple, blues, greens, and spices on upholstery pieces set against a neutral background and enhanced by glowing metallic accents. This season we’re mixing metals and loving the way pairings of cool and warm ones with different finishes work together. EG: Are you having a fur moment? Mitchell: Definitely. We love it on the runway and for home. It looks cozy and glamorous. And unexpected when it turns up on certain pieces. Whether you add a chair and ottoman or even a pair of pillows, they make a room feel more modern...and fabulous. We also like incorporating fur because it’s an element of one of our favorite fashion and design periods: the late 1960s to early 1970s. We love the styles and the spirit of freedom of those days. Uncover Your Own Hidden Treasures Old Westbury Gardens to host art, antiques valuation BY ANTON NEWS STAFF
specialsections@antonnews.com
Old Westbury Gardens will host “Art, Antiques and Curiosities in the Garden”, an art and antiques valuation day, on Thursday, Oct. 2 from noon to 5 p.m. in partnership with Rago Arts and Auction Center, an independent auction house. Many of the expert appraisers expected to be on hand for the valuation day have previously appeared on The Antiques Roadshow, including David Rago, Suzanne Perrault (decorative arts and ceramics), Sebastian Clarke (decorative arts, furnishings, silver), Meredith Hilferty (fine art) and Sarah Churgin (jewelry). They will be joined by colleagues with expertise in Asian property, Americana, coins, militaria, books, maps and ephemera. Visitors interested in appraisals may bring up to six items including including decorative arts, furnishings (or photos of same), fine art, silver, jewelry, luxury handbags, historical ephemera, Asian, Native American and tribal arts, books and maps, and militaria (excluding firearms and other weapons) that can fit into a car
This silver bread basket fetched $33,750. At left: David Rago, founding partner of Rago Arts and Auction Center trunk or van. (trucks, or other large vehicles will not be permitted on the property). Almost any type of property that fits in a passenger vehicle is welcome, Rago, which holds free appraisal days regularly at its Lambertville, NJ location has seen many treasures walk in unexpectedly, according to founder David Rago. “This spring we identified a silver basket bought at a
local firehouse flea market in a $4 box lot as a rarity from early 1900 Vienna. The owner chose to sell it and it found a buyer in June for $33,750. That’s just one example. We’ve had the fun of telling owners that their personal property is worth hundreds of dollars, thousands of dollars and hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Old Westbury Gardens is located at 71 Old Westbury Rd. in Old Westbury,
between the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and Jericho Tpke., approximately 20 miles east of New York City. The organization will receive a percentage of the sale from any items consigned to Rago at this event. Free verbal appraisals are included with regular admission to Old Westbury Gardens; tickets are limited and valuations are on a first-come basis. Call 516-333-0048 for more information.

When the likes of the Vanderbilts and du Ponts were building their Gold Coast mansions at the turn of the 19th century, they wanted fully developed landscapes to match their elaborate homes. No one wanted to wait for acorn seedlings to grow into mighty oaks. To the rescue came Edward Hicks, the second generation of the Hicks Nurseries family. Edward, who taught at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, invented and patented the equipment for moving the big trees desired by new estate owners. Huge full-grown trees – sometimes in full leaf – were carefully extracted from the earth and taken primarily to the Gold Coast mansions, where many still flourish today. While we may not be “royals,” those of us with an empty yard also don’t want to wait decades for a fully developed garden.
9/18/14 6:59 AM
So we went back to the source — Hicks Nurseries — where we asked landscaper Rich Abate for some advice on what to plant to create a garden that will look good in a short time. “Non-evergreens are the fastest growing,” said Abate. He recommended shrubs such hydrangeas and viburnum. We did the research Abate recommended, looking up plants on the internet and was able to get the basics on the versatile viburnum, which has attractive foliage and produces lovely and sometime fragrant flowers. Many have colorful fruits that appeal to birds and other wildlife. Viburnum can be planted in dry, wet, sunny or shady spots. A good choice. You need to have a budget to determine just how fully developed your newly planted garden will be, says Daniel Richard, the general manager of Hicks Landscaping, a full service division that offers services from concept to completion.

grows 10 to 12 feet tall. A fast-growing evergreen that can eventually reach a height of 50 feet is arborvitae green giant. But a wall of evergreen can be formidable and dull so both Shevlin and Abate suggest combing evergreens and deciduous plants. “A deciduous plant can offer added
ornamental value with flowers, attractive berries and/or vibrant foliage colors,” says Abate. “Deciduous plants are also more economical in most instances and tend to be easier to grow and maintain than their evergreen counterparts.” Deciduous plants that work well combined with evergreens
are crape myrtle, flowering plum and cut leaf Japanese maple. So hit the books, get on the internet and talk to experts. A caveat from Daniel Richards: “Be aware that older plant material is more susceptible to transplant shock.” Kind of like humans.
122985
Before planting anything, says Michael Shevlin, the owner/partner of Hines and Zaffarese Landscapers in Garden City, it’s important to have a plan. A big mistake, says Shevlin, is to put in a plant or a tree without thinking of the entire landscape and how everything will fit together. If you want to do it yourself, Shevlin recommends measuring your property and then going on line or hit the gardening books to find out what is available. It’s important to make sure the plant you want is zoned for our area and that the sun conditions are right for the plant. And don’t forget about amending the soil by tilling in compost or top soil. Or you can hire a company like Hines and Zaffarese where you will get a free initial consultation. That is followed by an actual design, which can be the typical overhead view drawing where plants are represented by circles. Or, better yet, a photo image where a picture is taken of the house and recommended plants are superimposed on the actual photo. A common concern for Long Islanders, says Shevlin, is acquiring privacy and that can be done with plants. One of his plant recommendations is skip (schipka) laurel, a dense growing evergreen shrub that

esidential interior designer Greg Lanza, whose home base has been in Locust Valley for more than 20 years, feels a designer’s role should be to hint at the trends that surround us, while maintaining a client’s own identity. He’s stays in the loop by keeping his eyes constantly open to new idea and seeing what’s fresh and new — in the hospitality arena to be specific. Lanza enjoys taking in scenarios like hotels and restaurants and says that inspires much of the
2 direction he goes in. “It could be a new hotel that opened, or how a retail store is set up, or how a table is set at a party — even the lighting reflected on a wall,” he said. Four years ago, he opened a retail, lifestyle shop called Birch (on Birch Hill Road, Locust Valley). There he sells both men and women’s clothing, home accessories, and more. He says it takes a lot to excite him, but when something does — it’s got to be a “Wow.” Lanza’s clients are those who know his reputation. He considers himself a “design snob.” “I like what I like and I’m not afraid to admit it,” he said. He knows how to spread the dollar really well by utilizing his own workroom where he can custom make case goods and pieces of furniture inspired by famous pieces. “I can get most things made for clients for a lot less than they see it for elsewhere,” he added. He enjoys implementing what he calls tricks of the trade or how to make the most of a space: making short spaces feel taller, small spaces feel larger or
larger spaces more scaled. “I love playing with light and color in order to create an environment, as opposed to just filling a room,” he said. “I like designing a space around the furniture.” Lanza is always a step ahead, beyond what a home furnishings catalogue will show. He said the retro look is fading out and a more layered look is creeping in. He describes layering as a variety of things. For example, “it can be deco or Victorian mixed together, or mid-century modern with Rococo with hints of traditional,” Lanza explained. “The trend today is very exaggerated and extreme with more color.” He said people want to see more color and are moving away from the cappuccino and mocha colors. Color is definitely key today and they should stand out and be real dramatic. Often times, he sees clients, unsure of their style, succumbing to what they see in department stores. “People should not be dictated by that,” he said. “That’s why with an experienced interior designer, clients can sit down, have a conversation and get exactly what they’re looking for.”

to do it. We currently have quite a few examples where they want to conceal their appliances. I have a customer now where they want a stacked washer and dryer and a pantry cabinet to conceal it, because it’s in the kitchen. We have another one where the customer has a three monitor computer setup and I have walls that slide to conceal those.” When it comes to appliance choice, stainless steel is still very popular, said Reilly. “Glass doors as opposed to appliance panels seem to be the choice at Riverhead with refrigerators,” she said. “Customers are really making the refrigerator a showpiece in the kitchen.” But Dempsey sees it differently. “I’ve done a lot where the refrigerator becomes more of an armoire so it’s very concealed and almost not like an appliance anymore,” he said. “It’s in line with what I said about people wanting to ‘cover things up.’”

Dempsey says open spaces are still big favorites but adds, “I’ve noticed a trend in reducing the footprint of the kitchen to control the cost. So many customers were previously knocking down walls to combine their formal dining room with the kitchen but I don’t see that as much anymore. I just saw a young couple, though, who want to knock down walls that they don’t really need to, but they want to get the effect of a grand mansion out of their small Tudor.” As for trending materials, Kelly says, “Artistic combinations of glass, stone, rare marbles, exotic wood, metals, porcelain, laminate, or concrete bring an interesting energy to the space and are being used frequently.” Painted finishes are popular at Riverhead (www.rbscorp.com). “We’re doing more acrylic finishes,” says Reilly. “Laminate finishes seem to be making a comeback. People aren’t using granite countertops as much. They’re really moving over to quartz and simpler colors. Quartz is really about color consistency. Granite is a natural material. Quartz is a man-made material where the color and the pattern can be controlled. It has all the same qualities as granite. It’s just as durable and there’s really no price difference.” Dempsey has a different view of quartz. “Some complain that it looks too manufactured,” he said. “If they want that unique, artistic one-of-akind look they’ve got to go to a natural stone. When you want it to look clean, crisp it’s easy to use a quartz product because it’s very controlled and it’s not busy. “I see things moving toward simpler, sleeker, more contemporary,” Reilly continued. “The inset cabinets with exposed hinges are still popular but now they’re doing inset cabinets with no exposed hinges to give it a more contemporary look.” People want to conceal things according to Dempsey. He added, “It’s an old idea, but people still want

KITCHEN from page 11C Induction cooking is a new appliance trend, according to Reilly. “It’s a new cooking style that’s ‘rapid heat up’ and ‘rapid cool down,’” she explained. “It’s trying to simulate how rapidly gas burners heat up and cool off. It’s basically about making the glass cooktop a more efficient surface.” With flooring surfaces, it’s either tile or wood, in Dempsey’s opinion. “It hasn’t really changed over the years,” he said. “One of the complaints about wood is that it’s takes on a patina and gets worn. But depending on the kind of kitchen, it might work. Stone is harder on your feet and back and sometimes the look of the stone can make it difficult to find a substantial contrast between it and your cabinets and countertops. You don’t want too busy a detail. Wood is easier in that respect.” The outdoors are beginning to become part of the kitchen equation too. “There is growing interest in bringing the comfort and homeliness we love indoors to the outside,” Kelly says. “At Kitchen Designs we are also noticing a major upswing in demand for creating outdoor environments, especially outdoor kitchens as seen in an increase in the demand for grills, pizza ovens and outdoor cabinetry.”

Your home’s flooring matters. Not only can it affect property value, but it’s also a fundamental element of design and style. With so many choices available, it can be difficult choosing what’s right for your family and home. Here are some guidelines that can help you make smart decisions that meet your budget and lifestyle. “Vinyl happens to be the largest and fastest growing flooring product on the market, especially in the wood looks,” said Kim Campbell, family owner of Campbell’s Carpet Service in Port Washington. “The wood look is popular and even more now that the grain is textured into the surface and not just printed onto the vinyl covering.” She added, “Vinyl can go in places that real wood can’t go, like rooms with higher moisture.” Easy to maintain, vinyl and tile flooring tends to be very resistant to moisture, fading and scratches. Tile allows you to create a variety of looks in your home from Tuscan to modern with the use of stone, such as slate, travertine, marble, concrete and linen. Natural stone floors are beautiful and elegant, but they are not always ideal for families. However, today’s engineered products are changing that. A pre-engineered tile flooring, can be installed quickly with or without grout on any level of a home. Unlike natural stone that needs to be stained and maintained, this alternative can look better longer with minimal maintenance. There is a vast selection of styles, colors, and fibers to choose from in today’s marketplace, but a simple checklist can help. Campbell said the first thing you should consider when deciding which type of flooring is best is how you will use the room. Carpeting is great insulation, sound and warmth. Vinyl flooring is stain resistant and easier to clean. Some homeowners may want professional help in making their decisions. Think about consulting a qualified flooring specialist. Flooring is a long-term investment, so consider factors like maintenance and usage before making a final decision.

Find Peace In A Backyard Pond BY FELIX CUTRONE
specialsections@antonnews.com
Often one of the strongest forces in our spiritual being is that of water. From the first time we see the ocean or are entranced by a country stream, there is a deep connection to water. From wiggling our toes in the surf or sitting on a lakeside dock, we want to be near water. This was the motivation behind my first backyard pond. When I look at my own home as my sanctuary from everyday stuff, I wanted to include that which gave me peace and calm. A pond fit the bill. It became the focus of many quiet times as well as a conversation piece for my guests. When I look back, a pond was an extension of my home aquariums when I was a kid. The creation of the first pond was a simple weekend project. I bought a rigid-formed pond much like a kiddie pool and selected a location that was close to the entertaining area of my yard so as to be enjoyed by all or few. A visit to the local garden center for an inexpensive pump and
filter, some colorful goldfish and I was hooked. I found myself bragging to all who asked on how simple it was to bring this core of nature and water to my sanctuary, my backyard. Birds, butterflies, frogs and people are all attracted. It became like all hobbies; I spend what little or much as I want in time and money to have this piece of nature right in my reach. Thirty years from that first pond, I now have several ponds. As I gained knowledge and enthusiasm, I went bigger and personalized the design to fit the dream of what a home pond is: the backyard version of what we hold as the image of nature. Editor’s note: Many local retailers, such as Hicks Nurseries and Westminster Nursery & Garden Center, and online suppliers like Amazon and Eco Pond Supply sell complete backyard ponding kits. In addition, there are several do-it-yourself planning websites and videos on the internet to help you get started. Felix Cutrone is the garden center manager at Hicks Nurseries.
