The Automotive Match-Maker Here’s your soulmate for the 2015 model year BY RANDY STEELE
At left: The 2015 Hyundai Genesis.
editorial@antonnews.com
Okay, you know who you are. And you know what you do. But do you know what you should drive? Well, we do. Or at least we have some suggestions. Here, we match 10 brand-new 2015 vehicles with the Long Islanders who should own them.
1.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 130 horsepower and has an EPAestimated 33/41 mpg city/highway. Nimble, efficient and well-built, the all-new Fit is giving its competition exactly that — fits. Prices start at $15,525.

Looking for the perfect ride for your annual winter trek from the Long Island Expressway to South Dixie Highway? Take a turn at the wheel of the all-new 2015 Hyundai Genesis. With its smooth, 311-hp V-6 engine, this five-seat, rearwheel-drive luxury liner (all-wheel drive is optional) delivers high-end comfort and convenience — at a starting price of only $40,500. Handsome and solid, the innovative new Genesis we drove was a breeze to operate, plus it has a great warranty. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal in this class.
Sure, you own a big shiny new Mercedes, BMW or Jaguar (maybe all three), but we bet you don’t park that car at the train station for your commute to work. What to drive instead? Consider the 2015 Audi A3 Sedan. It’s a no-muss, no-fuss, entry-level luxury car with gobs of get-up and go. Engine choices are either a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with front-wheel drive, or a 220-hp 2.0-liter with the Quattro all-wheeldrive system, which will be handy next winter for those icy stretches on Northern Boulevard. The 2.0-liter version we drove starts at about $32,900.
Massage Therapist This thrifty, nifty little four-door is a rumpus room on wheels. Featuring
amazing amounts of head and elbow room, plus great forward visibility, the Fiat 500L we drove sported a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. Matched to a six-speed transmission, it garners an EPA-estimated 24/33 mpg city/highway. Order it with the Giallo (yellow) exterior color, and everyone will know that good times are rolling their way. Prices for this model start at $21,395.
Pre-Law Major With the cost of law school looming large, you need to pocket every penny. But you also need a car, one that’s economical, and whip smart. Well, we found you the perfect ride: the 2015 Honda Fit. This young and stylish four-door hatchback is pure engineering genius. Its

MATCH from page 3C
A Gentleman/ Gentlewoman Farmer Is it possible for a half-ton pickup truck with a base price of nearly $50,000 to be considered a bargain? Well… sort of, if the truck in question is the new Ram 1500 Laramie Limited
Edition 4x4, equipped with a crew cab and a 3-liter V-6 EcoDiesel engine mated to an eight-speed transmission. This diesel engine we ran gets an EPAestimated 19/27 mpg city/highway, which the EPA estimates is about $500 more fuel efficient each year than a comparably-sized pickup with a V-8. So, yeah, it’s a bargain.
We know that getting into an accident is never convenient, but here at Don Joe we do everything in our power to
Fed up with managed care? Great, but understand that you’ll be making house calls now, which means you’ll need a comfortable, dependable ride. Our prescription: the 2015 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, which has a 200-hp four-cylinder engine and electric motor that net an impressive EPAestimated 40/39 mpg city/highway. All Avalons are equipped with keyless entry, pushbutton engine, leather upholstery and heated front seats. What’s not to love? Price for the XLE Touring model we drove was $37,984.

3.6-liter V-6 coupled with a smooth nine-speed (yes, nine-speed) transmission that you shift with a slick rotary dial. This model has eight airbags, blindspot monitoring, forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, rear back-up camera, parking assist and much more, all for $34,415 as tested.
Chairman of the Board Two words: Cadillac Escalade. Powered by a 420-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 that delivers 460 ft.-lb. of torque, the all-new Escalade can tow more than four tons. The discreetly physical Escalade is a masterful study of outer strength and inner peace. This family-first, three-row SUV is plush, roomy and up-to-date. Its instrument display can be configured four ways. Front-row seats are heated and cooled. Powered third-row seats fold flat. It even has magnetic shocks for improved handling. Prices start at $71,695 for the standard version.
Retired Cop Some things you never tire — or retire — of. And one of those things is plenty of good ol’ American torque. With a 6.2-liter V-8, the new Chevrolet SS Sports Sedan produces a whopping 415 hp and 415 ft.-lb. of torque, which translates to 0-60 in less than five seconds. It has great brakes and a handling setup that’s equally impressive. Rumor has it that Chevy will offer a manual stick on the SS this year. Prices start at about $45,000.

Technology To Go: Your Car Does That?! Technical highlights on this year’s cars and trucks BY RANDY STEELE
editorial@antonnews.com
Seeing is Believing: Subaru’s acclaimed EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is improved for 2015. “It can see in color now,” says Thomas Robbins, business development manager at North Coast Subaru in Glen Cove, which he explains helps the system better detect and prevent collisions. Available on the 2015 Outback and Legacy models, EyeSight continually monitors and adjusts the speed of your vehicle, and brakes it when necessary when you’re using cruise control. It also alerts you if the car wanders from its lane. The Little Liter That Could: Available as an option in the subcompact Fiesta, Ford’s 1L EcoBoost engine is a small wonder. Imagine a quart bottle. That is nearly the size of the total displacement of Ford’s new 1-liter, turbocharged, in-line three-cylinder engine. Weighing only about 215 pounds, this amazing little powerhouse is rated at 123 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. That’s reportedly the most torque per liter of nearly any engine built by any automotive manufacturer, save for some wacky exotica. Equipped in a Fiesta, this engine gets and EPArated 31 mpg city/43 mpg hwy. Picture This: The all-new Audi A3 reportedly has a feature called, “Picture Destination,” which allows the driver to navigate to his or her destination by using a photograph of the spot loaded onto Google Maps. No address necessary. Also, if someone emails or texts you a photo with embedded geographical coordinates, the system can use the photo to take you to its location. That’s Using Your Head: Engineers of the all-new midsized, extended cab Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups have found an ingenious solution to an age-old problem with child seats in the back row. Because the bottoms of the rear seats must be chopped short, child seats are too large to sit properly on the rear cushions. To lengthen the seat, GM’s engineers simply detached the nearby headrest, and then designed attachment points that allow the headrest to snap into the front of the rear seat cushion.
Above: The interior of the 2015 Audi A3. At right: The 2015 Ford F-150. An Education in Acceleration: An option that’s not for everyone but a discerning few is the new Performance Data Recorder available on the upcoming Corvette Z06. Using a high-def camera mounted on the windshield, this recorder takes video and audio of you as you drive, as well as displaying your performance data. Also, if you are running the car on a track, the recorder can show you the layout of the course. Something in the Air: The allnew 2015 Hyundai Genesis will be equipped with a monitor that detects excess amounts of carbon dioxide (not to be confused with deadly carbon monoxide) inside the car. Excess carbon dioxide may cause drivers or passengers to feel drowsy and become less responsive. When triggered, the monitor pumps fresh air from outside the car into the cabin. Light Makes Right: Scheduled to be released this fall is the all-new Ford F-150 pickup, which has gone through some major renovations. Ford has replaced the steel in the body and bed of the F-150 with “military-grade” aluminum alloy, lowering the pickup’s curb weight by a reported 700 pounds. The reduced weight allows Ford to offer the F-150 with a 3.5L V-6 engine. This pickup comes equipped with a plethora of glossy features, but of particular note are the tiny spotlights on the
side-mirrors that illuminate the side panels of the truck, a surprisingly simple but useful idea that we think will be widely emulated. Special Effects: The new Chrysler 200 features an interesting idea: turn-signal indicator lights along the front wheel wells. Imagine that you’re parked on a busy street, attempting to leave your spot. With these signals, you can better alert oncoming drivers of your intention to enter traffic. Not only that, but the lights look cool, too. Another neat trick on the 200 is the rotary dial used to engage the transmission. Chrysler has used this dial before, notably in its Ram pickup, but the device seems more at home within the confines of this midsized car’s cabin.
Simply the Best: Basic and to the point is how we like our console designs and navigation systems, and the folks at Jaguar seem to agree. Their recent models feature a button near the navigation screen that simply notes, “Take Me Home,” and that is exactly what it does once the coordinates of your residence are loaded. Sure, other nav systems also perform this function in some manner, but we admire Jaguar’s no-muss, no-fuss solution. One Hot Number: Cadillac’s shiny new fashion-forward ATS coupe comes equipped with OnStar 4G LTE connectivity. What does that mean? It turns the car into a self-contained Wi-Fi hotspot that can handle as many as seven separate internet devices. No matter where you are, everybody can stay connected.

All The Right Moves
The smart way to test drive a new car. BY RANDY STEELE
editorial@antonnews.com
Thinking about buying or leasing a new car? Congratulations! Now it’s time to get to work, and take a test drive. First, do your homework. Decide what type of car you want, and find at least three comparable models from different manufacturers. The key word is “comparable.” (Tip: Go online and look for similar vehicles with approximately the same wheelbase.) Your goal is to drive all three in a single weekend. Fresh impressions will make your decision much easier. Bring company. Don’t go to the dealership alone. You’ll need to be with someone with whom you can speak candidly. “Most customers come with a companion,” says Zane Patton, internet sales manager at Sarant Cadillac in Farmingdale. “It’s beneficial to have someone along. People vocalize their concerns about a car a lot more with a friend along.” However, you might want to leave the kids at home, he warns. Despite their initial enthusiasm, they can quickly get bored and will become a distraction for you. And bring your

Before you leave your house, call the dealership and set up an appointment. When you arrive, it may get tricky. You and the salesperson could find yourselves at cross-purposes. He or she is trying to make a sale. You are trying to make a choice. Don’t allow their pressure to seal the deal impede your ability to collect information. Some dealerships have cars or trucks set aside as test drive vehicles. They may be equipped with bigger engines or more options than you are interested in. Decide whether the vehicle that you’re being steered into is really a vehicle you might want. Inside information. Before jumping into the driver’s seat, really look at the vehicle. Will that spoiler underneath the front bumper scrape the entrance of your driveway? Those low-profile tires look great, but will they survive the hungry potholes on Jericho Turnpike? How easy will it be to clean up coffee stains on those seats? Open the driver’s door slowly. How much space does it taketo fully open. Could get in or out in a tight parking spot? Put your partner to work, and ask him or her to climb into the back seat and get as comfortable as possible. Are seats are big enough? Do they adjust? Do they fold down? Are there remote outlets for electronics? Are there vents and controls for heat and air conditioning? Is the storage adequate? Are there enough cup holders? How difficult will it be to install a child seat?
Scout the trunk. Is it big enough to hold a woolly mammoth? Or only a pair of woolen socks? Is that a fullsized spare tire or a donut? Where are the tools to change a flat? Then, ask the salesperson to pop the hood so you can see if the points for engine’s routine maintenance are easily accessed. Now climb into the driver’s seat. Did you hit your knee? Will it feel the same five years from now when you’re 10 pounds heavier? Are the seats and steering wheel easily adjusted? Is the dashboard layout intuitive? This is a good time to check the visibility from the driver’s seat. What does the rear-view mirror show you? How big is the rear window? Adjust both side-view mirrors and make sure they’re big enough to warn you that Mad Max and his tractor-trailer are speeding close behind you on the LIE. Ask the salesperson to demonstrate the vehicle’s touchscreen. So many of the dials and switches of yesteryear have been replaced with touchscreens and simulated buttons. If you remembered to bring your cellphone, iPod or other electronic gewgaws, see if they can be easily synched with the vehicle’s dash-mounted electronics. Ask the salesperson to activate the controls for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as the navigation system. Get a demo of the audio system, but make sure it’s turned off during your test drive.

Car Insurance: Credit Score Matters BY JUSTIN HOPPER editorial@antonnews.com
Buying a car? Your credit score could have a huge impact on your insurance premiums, says personal finance social network WalletHub, which commissoned a study on the topic. WalletHub obtained quotes from five of the largest auto insurance providers in the country for two hypothetical consumers who are
identical except for the fact that one has excellent credit while the other has no credit. This enabled the researchers to isolate for the role of credit data in insurance pricing. Here’s what they found: Car insurance premiums in New York can fluctuate by around 47 percent based on credit score. Allstate appears to be the company that relies on credit data the most, with the WalletHub
Scenario revealing a 116-perecent fluctuation in premiums between a consumer with excellent credit and a consumer with bad credit. State Farm seems to rely on credit data the least, displaying a 45-percent premium fluctuation. Progressive is the most transparent carrier about both the use of credit data in quote generation and the source of that credit data, said WalletHub.
| AUTO BRIEF GM’s Military Discount Got a connection to the military? It could save you big on a General Motors vehicle through the end of June. More than 21 million active, reserve, retired and veteran military nationwide are eligible for a special discount on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles. USAA members are eligible for an additional $750 discount. You must take delivery by June 30, says the carmaker.
MOVES from page 8C You need the vehicle to be quiet so you can listen to it. Also get the lowdown on operating the windshield wipers and headlights before you leave the lot. Take control. As you’re leaving the lot, the salesperson will suggest that you take a nice quiet stretch of road or highway. The dealership usually has prepared a route for its test drives. However, you need the experience to be as stop-and-go, real-world as possible. Suggest a route that’s more typical of your daily driving habits. Repeat this phrase: Don’t be afraid. Sarant Cadillac’s Patton admits that many of the people he takes on test drives are too nervous to even try putting the vehicle in reverse. They sit at stop signs and hesitate to move forward. One way he tries to calm his customers is by assuring them that it’s all right to get the feel of car — especially at speed on the highway. “Put the pedal to the floor,” he says. “That’s what it’s built for.” Once on the road, focus on the steering. Do the tires immediately react as you turn the wheel, or is there lag time before the tires start to bite? This “numbness” is disliked by drivers who demand precision performance from their vehicles, but ironically, many other drivers prefer it because they don’t want their car or truck to react to every little twitch they make at the wheel. In other words, the choice is yours. Just be aware of the choice you are making. The same is true of suspensions. Some vehicles’ suspensions are set up to be stiff, almost gruff and noisy, but those suspensions feel more responsive and are preferred by demanding drivers. Other drivers find them irritating and uncomfortable. Listen for sounds — wind, engine, road noise — so you can compare this vehicle to the others you’ll test drive. Look around. All around. Adjust the mirrors. Where are the blind spots? (There are always blind spots.) You also want to make mental notes about how the vehicle accelerates. Don’t
The interior of the 2015 Cadillac Escalade pretend to be Mario Andretti, but don’t be afraid to pass another car or truck on the highway. Find a spot to use the brakes firmly and feel how they feel. Brakes on some new cars are extra sensitive and can grab, which unsettles many drivers. Also, do you notice the transmission as it shifts? Does it shift a lot? If so, can you live with it, or does it annoy you? There are two maneuvers that you should make during every test drive. The critical one is parallel-parking. A vehicle’s ability to be parallel-parked comfortably can be its most important asset. Another maneuver to try is the K-turn (or three-point turn). Find a quiet street, and turn around the vehicle 180-degrees with three twists of the steering wheel. If you can get through these two exercises without resorting to hand-to-hand combat, there’s a good chance you’ll be happy with this vehicle. Exit strategy. Did you get at least 30 minutes with the car? You may want to keep the vehicle longer, perhaps

Put The Car-Buying Odds In Your Favor Don’t let a flashy dashboard hot-wire your emotions BY JOHN OWENS
jowens@antonnews.com
Don’t be shy, get behind the wheel of a 2015. As Randy Steele points out in “All The Right Moves,” dealers want you to take a test drive. In fact, many will let you spend a lot of time with the car. The reason? They are not just friendly, they also are quite confident in their products. Confident that you will fall in love. Or at least the odds are in the dealer’s favor that you will. Unless you are shopping for a Corvette and end up behind the wheel of a mini-van, chances are you will find the test vehicle reasonably satisfying. But don’t let your emotions override practically. Play the field, and test drive at least a trio of candidates. Perhaps you have read in various car or consumer magazines that you can judge the overall quality of a vehicle while sitting in the front seat. There’s this notion that you can learn most of what you need to know while calmly perusing the soft-lighted vanity mirror hidden in the visor, or moving your finger along the simulated leather “hand-stitching” that runs the length of the dash.
If only it were that easy. Automakers put a lot of time and effort designing the interiors of their vehicles, knowing full well that’s where buyers make their first impressions of any new car or truck. But make no mistake: Even if the door handle has been put on display at the Museum of Modern Art, it has
