Retirement Foundation (TRF), will return to Chef Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain on Thursday, June 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. The event, featuring “The Foods of Bobby Flay,” will include an auction of select stallion seasons and unique experiences. At the event, the Earle I. Mack Thoroughbred Champion Award will be presented to Victoria McCullough. This award is annually given to an individual for outstanding efforts and influence on Thoroughbred racehorse welfare, safety, and retirement. McCullough, chairman of the board of Chesapeake Petroleum, has made tremendous strides using her own resources in preventing the reinstitution of horse slaughter in the U.S. and in the fight to stop the export of horses across the country’s borders. She achieved the de-funding of USDA inspection of horse slaughterhouses by enlisting the help of key governmental officials and the presidential administration. McCullough’s love for horses has led to her personally purchasing more than 4,000 horses from kill pens, funding their care, and finding them new homes. Bar Americain is located at 152 W. 52nd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in New York City. Tickets for the celebration are $350 per person. Information about the event can be obtained by contacting Nancy Kelly of Grayson-Jockey Club
Research Foundation at 212-521-5305 or Sue Finley at 732-747-8060.

Star-Studded Performances For Stakes Day BY ANTON NEWS STAFF
editorial@antonnews.com
LL Cool J
The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced that LL Cool J, Frank Sinatra Jr., musicians from the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, former New York Yankees great Bernie Williams and a performance from the Tony award-winning Broadway musical Wicked will headline a New York-themed group of entertainers scheduled to perform on Belmont Stakes Day, June 7, at Belmont Park. LL Cool J, a New York native, will perform two songs in between the Grade 1 Manhattan and the 146th running of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, the oldest and longest leg of racing’s Triple Crown. LL Cool J is an entertainment icon who has found great success crossing into multiple mediums. A two-time Grammy award winner, recording artist, actor, author, NAACP Image Award winner, entrepreneur and philanthropist, LL continues to display his wide range of talents with every project. He currently stars in the primetime drama series, NCIS: Los Angeles. As the horses go to the post for the Belmont, Frank Sinatra, Jr. will deliver a live rendition of “New York, New York”,
the song popularized by his legendary father and sung nearly every year at Belmont Park since 1997. Frank Jr. pays homage to his father in both song and style as he tours the world with his show, “Sinatra Sings Sinatra.”
The acclaimed West Point musicians will perform the National Anthem to start the day’s entertainment, and will continue to regale guests with patriotic numbers throughout the day. Also during

the afternoon, guests will be treated to a track side performance from Wicked. Meanwhile, one of the most beloved New York athletes of the last 25 years, former Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams, will entertain guests in the first-floor Champagne Room with acoustic and electric guitar music. “Belmont Stakes Day will provide an unparalleled guest experience, an event where everything will be bigger and better — just like New York itself,” said NYRA CEO and President Chris Kay. “From the outstanding array of rich stakes races to the assortment of popular entertainers with strong ties to New York, the day celebrates everything that is great about our city and state. We want everyone to come out and kick off the New York summer party season with a great afternoon of racing, complemented by a great day of entertainment and enhanced food and beverage options.” Remaining seating and hospitality can be purchased by visiting ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-6972849. Walk-up admission is available either through advance purchase at the box office or at admission gates on Belmont Stakes Day.

Paul Zukowski, the grounds supervisor for Belmont and Aqueduct race tracks, has figured out how to keep the nearly 800 white carnations affixed to the blanket of the winning horse at Belmont Stakes — hot glue. About five hours before the race, Zukowski attaches the flowers, and they stay put. “People love it when we bring out the blanket,” said Zukowski, “and they always ask to take pictures of it.” The carnations are just about the only plant not grown at the Belmont greenhouses, several of which date from the late 19th century when this land belonged to financier August Belmont. Three greenhouses have been added over the years. “We grow 95 percent of what we need,” said Zukowski, “Tulips for indoors, flowering annuals, mums, poinsettias. We use a lot of seasonal plants at both Belmont and Aqueduct race tracks.” The horses are at Belmont from Labor Day to mid-October; at Aqueduct from October through April; and return to Belmont in early May before heading off to Saratoga in mid-July.
Zukowski, who has worked at Belmont for 26 years, supervises a staff of 13 at the height of the season. He was introduced to horticulture as a child, helping at his family’s business, Stanley’s Nursery in Plainview. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from Cornell University. Zukowski managed a garden center on Long Island for almost two years before coming to Belmont. Always on the lookout for new ideas, Zukowski placed sweet potato vines in last year’s display, echoing an exhibit he saw at Epcot’s Gardens of the World in Florida. Besides designing and maintaining more than 40 garden beds at the tracks, he is responsible for the numerous trees at Belmont, including the giant Eastern white pine, estimated to be 175 years old. “The Belmont logo is modeled after this tree,” said Zukowski, “so we see it as the heart of our department.” Before each race, all of the horses parade past the tree as they enter the ring. But in one race only, The Belmont Stakes, only one horse will get to wear the coveted carnation blanket.

Large Field Expected At Belmont Stakes BY ANTON NEWS STAFF
editorial@antonnews.com
A large, competitive contingent of challengers is expected to face California Chrome when he attempts to become thoroughbred racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner in the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on June 7 at Belmont Park. Commanding Curve, second in the Kentucky Derby, and Ride On Curlin, runner-up in the Preakness, are slated to take on California Chrome again in the Belmont Stakes. Also exiting the Derby and aiming for a start in the Belmont are Danza (third), Wicked Strong (fourth), Samraat (fifth), and Intense Holiday (12th). Social Inclusion, third in the Preakness, is expected to join the Belmont Stakes field, as is Kid Cruz, eighth in the second leg of the Triple Crown. The provisional Belmont Stakes field also includes Tonalist and Commissioner, the respective top two finishers in Belmont Park’s Grade 2 Peter Pan. “We want to congratulate the connections of California Chrome,
who has distinguished himself as an elite 3-year-old,” said Martin Panza, NYRA’s senior vice president of racing operations. “Every one of us at the New York Racing Association looks forward to watching him attempt to make history on June 7. With $8 million in purses and 10 stakes on the card, Belmont Stakes Day already was going to be a fantastic day of racing, and California Chrome’s Triple Crown bid will make the event even bigger.”

The three Stewards at Belmont Park (New York State Gaming Commission, NYRA and the Jockey Club) unanimously agreed to allow the use of equine nasal strips for all horses running at racetracks of The New York Racing Association, Inc (NYRA), effective immediately. California Chrome will be permitted to use nasal strips when he competes at the 146th Belmont Stakes on June 7. On May 18, California Chrome trainer Art Sherman contacted the stewards (one representing the New York State Gaming Commission, one representing NYRA and another representing The Jockey Club) requesting permission to use nasal strips on the horse. The stewards immediately sought expert analysis from New York State Gaming Commission Equine Medical Director Scott E. Palmer, VDM, on the use. Dr. Palmer wrote: “I recommend that the stewards at State-based thoroughbred racetracks discontinue their ban on equine nasal strips. Equine nasal strips do not enhance equine performance nor do they pose a risk to equine health or safety and
as such do not need to be regulated. “While there is research to indicate that equine nasal strips decrease airway resistance in horses and may decrease the amount of bleeding associated with EIPH to some degree, I am unfamiliar with any research indicating that equine nasal strips enable a horse to run faster with nasal strips than without them. “In other words, there is no evidence they have a performance enhancing effect. Equine nasal strips do not pose a welfare or safety risk to the horse. They are applied to the top of the nose and anyone can see their use prior to a race. If improperly applied, equine nasal strips cannot interfere with performance. In my opinion equine nasal strips fall into the same category as tongue-ties.” The stewards considered Dr. Palmer’s advice and determined to allow the unregulated use of the nasal strips. In accordance with the N.Y.S. Gaming Commission Rule 4033.8, “Only equipment specifically approved by the stewards shall be worn or carried by a jockey or a horse in a race.”

Timing Is Everything
Sonny Taylor holds record for timing most Triple Crown winners BY CHRISTY HINKO
chinko@antonnews.com
Many records have been made and broken at Belmont Racetrack, most notably, anything having to do with the third leg of the Triple Crown racing series, the Belmont Stakes. One race official at New York Racing Association (NYRA), Sentell “Sonny” Taylor, 75, can say he holds the record for serving 50 years as a track official and has timed the races for the last three Triple Crown winners (Secretariat, 1973; Seattle Slew, 1977; Affirmed, 1978). Taylor has timed the races at Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga since 1964, when his great-uncle Earl Williams, the head clocker at NYRA got him a job as an assistant clocker. Taylor had finished serving his enlistment in the Army (1961-63) when he received his discharge papers after arriving at Brooklyn Navy Yard from a tour as an ordinance supply clerk in Munich, Germany. His uncle lived in Harlem at the time and welcomed Taylor to stay for a while in New York before returning to his hometown, Chicago. For several weeks he would go to work with his uncle, timing horses and remembers thinking, “This is nice; it seemed like a better job than I had before the Army, back in Chicago, when I worked for the post office as a railway mail clerk, sorting mail on trains.” Within three months, his great-uncle called and said there was an opening and the track would be calling him for an interview. Taylor said he was frank when asked by the hiring agent at the track whether he had ever timed horses before and if he thought he could do the job. Taylor said he told them he had never timed horses, but he was sure he could do the job and do it well. “I had been to the races before, back in Chicago — Arlington Park, Washington Park, Sportsman’s Park; this wasn’t my ‘first time at the races,’” said Taylor. “I knew horses.” Taylor had worked with his great-uncle at the New York tracks for about five years. Williams passed away in 1969. In 1971, Taylor became an official timer for the NYRA racetracks; he became a patrol judge in 1972, and then a placing judge in 1981. Each race is timed electronically, monitored by computers, and also
Above: Taylor manually times the race start, watching with binoculars over the track. Circa 1975. Taylor with pictures of the three past Triple Crown-winning horses and their jockeys. (Photos provided by NYRA) timed manually, by an official watching the race with a hand timer. From the time the last horse crosses the finish line, within two minutes, a series of checks and double-checks are orchestrated between the timing office and several other officials before the standings are posted and all winning bets can be paid out. Taylor has clocked the horses in the mornings, during their training sessions throughout the year. He shared his theory about why there has not been a Triple Crown winner since 1978. “They just don’t train the horses like they used to,” said Taylor. “Years ago trainers ran the horses for training much longer, much harder.” Since the last Triple Crown win in 1978, there have been 12 horses that have won the first two legs, in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but have failed the third and final leg at Belmont.
