CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK - ANTON COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS - JANUARY 22 - 28, 2014

OPEN HOUSE Sunday, January 26 11:30a.m. – 2:00p.m.

AMAZING PLACE. Holy Child Academy is an independent Catholic school for girls and boys from preschool through eighth grade. Beyond that, it’s an Amazing Place™.

And everywhere, kids who thought they had little in common are becoming teammates and study partners, friends and spiritual brothers and sisters. For life.

You can’t help but notice the excited chatter in the stairwells. The smiles and high-fives in the hallways. Don’t these kids at Holy Child seem remarkably happy to be in school? They clearly like each other – including their teachers.

We believe uniforms set kids free. Singing grace makes lunch more nourishing. And every kid deserves a healthy start in a peaceful place. Where they can learn timeless values and valuable skills to build on.

But don’t be misled. Behind those bright eyes and quick footsteps, there’s real growing going on. Over there a girl just decided she’s going to be a scientist. A boy is discovering the joy of solving an equation. Another just realized he can hear the song encoded on a sheet of music.

Now we’re taking our ideas in promising new directions. And that has us feeling a bit like those happy kids in the hallways again. Holy Child Academy is an Amazing Place. See for yourself at www.holychildacademy.org.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK - ANTON COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS - JANUARY 22 - 28, 2014

What Is Catholic Schools Week? BY ANTON NEWS STAFF

editorial@antonnews.com

Catholic Schools Week (CSW) is designed to raise the awareness of and celebrate the distinctiveness of Catholic schools. The theme for the National CSW 2014 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2014 is Jan. 26 to Feb. 1. CSW is about strengthening relationships between all those that have a stake in Catholic schools —students, staff, families, priests, parishioners, and members of the wider community—by showcasing what happens in the schools everyday. Schools celebrate CSW with masses, open houses, and other

activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large. The 2014 theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are communities — small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged. The new logo features a swirl of colors interacting around a cross, which is at the center of all Catholic education. The vibrancy of the colors and the movement and shadows in the logo portray the inner-connectivity and community life that are present in our Catholic schools.

Students Help Design New Chapel A great example of the Catholic Identity of St. Anne’s School in Garden City is demonstrated by the design and construction of the chapel in the school. The chapel was originally an open space, made into a large meeting room, then transformed into a chapel. The idea for the chapel came from Msgr. John Gilmartin who wanted to create a space that would be became the spiritual focal point of the school. Twelve students from grades 3 through 8 made up the committee that decided the architectural components of the chapel. They came up with no paintings on the wall; colored glass windows- not stained glass with figures; lower seats for the younger students; they selected the color of the floor carpeting; introduced the idea of a wooden ceiling; and selected the ceramic tiles on the ambo, altar and tabernacle to each tell a different biblical story. The chapel is used by the current pastor, Msgr. Tom Harold, to do weekly class masses and by the teachers who bring their students to the chapel for quiet reflection.

Recently the Kindergarten and first grade classes of Holy Family School in Hicksville visited Schmitt’s Farms in Melville. The students rode through the field on a tractor, which took them to the pumpkin patch. They learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and every student was able to pick their own pumpkin. After everyone picked a pumpkin, they learned about how different kinds of vegetables grow. All the students were able to pick radishes and green beans from the fields as well.

Dancing Classrooms The “Dancing Classrooms: Transforming Lives One Step at a Time” program was launched at Sts. Philip and James School in 2009. It is a well-developed program that blends social studies, language arts, math, music, and the arts through ballroom dancing. The program reinforces the Catholic values of respect, dignity, and morals while teaching students an important life skill. Visit www. sspjschool.net for videos and highlights of the competitions.

Expansion Includes Indoor Track, Classrooms Our Lady of the Hamptons recently completed a major capital expansion, adding a new wellness center and needed classroom space. As part of a larger program, a new gym was also included, with a suspended indoor track for students. The expansion also added four new classrooms which will allow Our Lady of the Hamptons to re-task the existing first floor as a primary center, dedicate the second floor of the existing building for grades 6, 7, and 8, create a second science lab and subdivide one classroom for special educational services.

Salvete, Discipuli!

The value of foreign languages in elementary education Since the autumn of 2012, students at All Saints Regional Catholic School in Glen Cove have been met with “Salvete, discipuli” (“Greetings, students”) from the Very Reverend Dom Daniel Nash as they enter their Latin class. Fifth through eighth graders at All Saints have access to Latin as a living language through which they not only learn its foundations but also discover a rich cultural, spiritual and intellectual patrimony. Through the study of Latin, the students gain deeper insights into the vocabulary and grammar of English as well as broaden their horizons and open their hearts to the joy of language. Like most of the other schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, All Saints actively supplements its ELA (English Language Arts) program with the teaching of a foreign language. While most schools don’t teach Latin, foreign language instruction is important in the schools for a number of reasons: learning a foreign language helps a child develop a connection to the world; it taps into the natural curiosity children possess by opening a gateway

to other cultures, foreign language skills expand children’s understanding and appreciation of their native language as well as other languages; and finally, exposure to more than one language helps children in their acquisition of skills in grammar and in vocabulary. This integrated and innovative program therefore affords students the opportunity to become more proficient in English, i.e., in reading

and comprehension skills, vocabulary building and etymology, giving them a clearer grasp of grammatical concepts and writing. Foreign language in All Saints is an eight year experience for students. The curriculum starts with Spanish for 1st and 2nd grades, Italian for 3rd and 4th grades and Latin for 5th and 6th grades. The program, foreseeing the children’s gaining familiarity with two modern

romance languages through the efforts of Mrs. Gerri Galvani, culminates in the study of Latin for two years, capping off the six years of elementary foreign language instruction. During 7th and 8th grades, students apply to Honors Latin or may elect to take Spanish. Convinced of the value of elementary education in foreign languages, Mrs. Galvani comments “It is such a pleasure to observe the younger grades in their acquisition of a new language whether it is Italian or Spanish. They are like little sponges absorbing everything that is taught to them. Also, it is a great sense of accomplishment to hear them greet me in the hallway using their newly acquired language.” The program aspires to build confidence in the students’ command of language in general, convincing them that effective communication is the key to future success and that bilingualism or multilingualism, a common and ordinary feature for many people throughout history and across the globe, is a reasonable and attainable goal which should be vigorously pursued not only for professional advancement but especially for personal enrichment.

Partnerships Make Catholic Education Continuum Work BY ANTON NEWS STAFF

At left: Molloy College and the Diocese have created a series of workshops to improve instructional delivery to meet the needs of diverse learners. The Molloy faculty has been working closely with schools in the Diocese on response to intervention, the use of educational technology, and the implementation of best practices. One of the most interesting aspects of the work with Molloy has been the pilot program to integrate iPads into the special education program at St. Agnes Cathedral School in Garden City. Together, from the formation of values in elementary school, to the development of character in high school, to the polishing of skills in these great colleges and universities, Catholic children get an advantage for life, and their families get a solid return on their investment.

editorial@antonnews.com

At right: The Diocese has worked with Fordham University to develop and educate future administrators. Teachers in the Diocese who have been chosen to participate in this program receive a Masters degree in administration. The commitment to excellence displayed by participants in this program assures that the Diocese will have future leaders with the required competencies to lead as visionaries and manage operations successfully.

109548

Virtually every Catholic elementary school student goes on to one of Long Island’s elite Catholic high schools upon graduation, and 99 percent of those students go on to college. So it should be no surprise that preparing students to excel in that atmosphere is an academic, spiritual and social goal beginning in the elementary schools. That degree of awareness, integration and cooperation is not an accident however. Did you know that there is an active program to create a Catholic education network from nursery through higher education? Its goal is to provide students and families with a greater return on their investment in choosing Catholic schools, and its effect is to provide a continuum of Catholic education. The ‘continuum effort’ manifests itself in a variety of ways that benefit students directly, help faculty members grow their skills, and help the schools groom their next generation of skilled administrators. The Diocese of Rockville Centre Education Department and the elementary schools are currently working with St. John’s University, Fordham University and Molloy College on initiatives to advance Catholic education.

Above: St. John’s University announced the establishment of the St. John’s Catholic School Scholarship in November of 2011 that provides any graduate of a Catholic high school a minimum of $10,000 over four years with a maximum potential scholarship of $20,000 based on financial need. The scholarship will benefit many students, will help to strengthen the Catholic school network, and is a strong endorsement by St. John’s University in the value of a Catholic school education. The relationship with St. John’s also helps with two professional development programs for principals and faculty. Through project TIE (Training Innovative Educators) St. John’s has been providing our schools with intensive professional development with a focus on math and ELA teaching strategies. The second program CLT (Curriculum Learning Teams) involves meetings at the university and on-site at the schools to work on new curriculum and instructional practices.

PATHWAYS, Helping Students Find Their Way BY ANTON NEWS STAFF

editorial@antonnews.com

Students at all of Long Island’s Catholic elementary schools build a foundation of knowledge and life skills as they progress from nursery through eighth grade. The core curriculum and academic rigor prepare students well for the next steps of their education. And while a wide variety of extra-curricular activities allow students from all of the schools to explore and develop their special interests and talents, St. Joseph’s School in Garden City has introduced a program called PATHWAYS that is designed to expand student’s knowledge of careers and job choices. PATHWAYS is an exciting program offered for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The program offers a variety of unique learning opportunities to enhance students’ real-world knowledge and individual growth. Each semester each student picks one field of study from a compelling range of creative workshops taught by experts in their field. The workshops focus on four key paths of self-discovery: arts; science and technology; law and business; and religion and community involvement.

Course selections that are, or have been offered, include: medical medley, legal eagles, how to succeed in business, Latin, baking, computer building, making books sing, computer programming, chess, fundamentals of banking, robotics, handy household hints, scenic design, photography, not for profit workshops, jewelry

design, and history through theatre. Each semester new and varied courses are rotated into the schedule. The PATHWAYS workshops offer vital introductions to different professions in a fun and challenging way. Whether the workshops involve craft or computers, literature or the law, religion or the

world of finance, these stimulating, enriching sessions build the child’s knowledge, skills and self-esteem. Complementing students’ well-rounded education at St. Joseph School, PATHWAYS gives each child an important opportunity to explore possible roads to future success.

Catholic Elementary Schools Offer A Unique Experience BY GARY LAYTON

Editorial@AntonNews.com Long Island residents are very fortunate to have good public, private and Catholic elementary schools as educational options. And while all are educationally sound, thousands of families elect to send their children to a Catholic elementary school. This article explores the reasons the families utilizing one of 43 Long Island Catholic Elementary schools selected their school, and how these differences from other potential learning paths give their children an advantage. Many parents chose a Catholic elementary school for the integrated program of faith and values. In a Catholic elementary school spiritual guidance is an essential part of the student’s daily activities. The emphasis on integrating faith and values, and modeling that behavior for students reinforces moral values and creates a respect for others. Because Catholic schools are private schools they are free to speak of God in the classroom and to openly celebrate Christian holidays. Practicing their faith reassures children that they are safe and loved, and that God loves them. Families who share the Catholic faith get these values reinforced daily as their children take religious education classes and prepare for the Sacraments of Holy Communion in second grade and Confirmation in eighth grade. Some parents believe that Catholic schools reinforce the values they live at home. The values Catholic elementary schools focus on aren’t exclusively Catholic, many are traditional values and quite a few non-Catholic families choose to send their children to Catholic school because the values taught are at the very foundation of a successful life. Learning and living these values is an integrated part of the Catholic elementary school experience. The timeless values taught in school create better prepared, more capable, and more confident young adults. Better manners, a polite and respectful attitude, and more confidence when dealing with adults are often the most easily observable differences in a ‘Catholic school kid’. Parents familiar with childhood development stages know how much of their child’s character is formed by the age of 10. Parents who live these enduring values in their home, and who want their children to embrace these values find that the daily reinforcement is a primary benefit of a Catholic elementary school.

Many believe that Catholic elementary schools offer a better environment for learning. Catholic elementary schools provide a more structured learning environment and hold students accountable for their personal conduct. School uniforms reduce the distractions and social stratification that children often experience at a young age and teach children that their value is not based on how others see them. The more disciplined environment and higher individual expectations require more focus and better study habits which leave graduates with the

self-discipline to succeed at whatever they try in the future. Children get more individualized attention in a Catholic elementary school. Catholic elementary schools offer an exciting curriculum and energized teachers with the latest technology and courseware, but equally important is that smaller schools, and generally smaller class sizes allow teachers and staff to get to know each student, and to better understand how to assign resources to support each student in their effort to be their best.

Parents believe that their children are getting a better education in Catholic school. In many cases, the students from the local Catholic elementary school outscore their counterparts in standardized testing. Much of this might be attributed to the discipline and study habits students learned, but some of it might be attributed to the level of parental involvement. Catholic schools are an ‘immersive’ experience for families, involving

UNIQUE from page 19C parents in the community surrounding the school, and keeping them more involved in their children’s day-to-day schooling. The partnership that develops between the educators and the parents is the key to success. Parents select Catholic elementary school because they feel it is better preparation for a Catholic high school and for college. The uncompromising expectations of each student’s personal best in Catholic elementary school gives students the discipline and study skills that serve them well in high school, college, and beyond. Most every student who graduates from Catholic elementary school goes on to Catholic high school with many elementary schools having 100 percent acceptance rates at the areas elite Catholic high schools. Their better developed study habits and greater self-discipline serve them well in high school. A level of comfort they have with the spiritual elements, and a history of performing service projects in elementary schools often make their high school transition easier. At the high school level Catholic elementary students are introduced to high-performing students from various public school systems. Many sound reasons exist to choose a Catholic elementary school and there has never been a better time to investigate the possibilities. With Catholic Schools Week coming up from Jan. 26 through Feb. 1, Long Island’s Catholic elementary schools will be opening their doors so prospective families can see and feel the difference themselves.
