Letter From The Publisher Dear Neighbor, Welcome to Gold Coast Magazine, a celebration of the people and lifestyle of the North Shore from Great Neck to the Suffolk County line. As the publishers of 18 weekly newspapers — including the Great Neck Record, Manhasset Press, The Roslyn News, Port Washington News, Garden City Life, Glen Cove Record Pilot, Syosset-Jericho Tribune and Oyster Bay Enterprise-Pilot — we know the territory and what makes the Gold Coast so special. In fact, the very words “Gold Coast”conjure images of elegance and leisure amid stately architecture and natural beauty. It is a meme that is part of America’s cultural DNA because it is true, and has been since the 19th century. Wealthy titans with names including Vanderbilt, Whitney, Phipps and, of course, Gatsby, were drawn here and took up residence along the North Shore at various times because of the area’s attributes, most notably, a green — and often waterfront — Eden that lent itself to sprawling estates that seemed to be limited only by imagination (not capital), and endeavors ranging from the hunt to yacht racing to polo to entertaining on an unprecedented scale. Today, much has changed on the Gold Coast. The grand estates are fewer. And many of the mansions are no longer in private hands, as colleges, museums and other institutions have moved in, making their glorious interiors and grounds available to all. That’s how it is at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor, where the mansion is open to the public, and the grounds form what is in effect a 145-acre welcome mat.

As the chair of the museum’s annual gala, I know firsthand the importance of raising funds for the museum’s wide range of educational programs, including bringing art to schools and schools to the museum. For more, see the feature in this issue, “The Art of Philanthropy.” At the same time, some aspects of the Gold Coast lifestyle remain wonderfully intact. There is a deep appreciation of nature, both wild and manicured by man. Witness the nature preserves (such as the Muttontown Preserve) and the glorious gardens (see Old Westbury Gardens and Planting Fields Arboretum). Entertaining? From restaurants to private clubs to catering venues to backyard parties, today’s Gold Coast offers a variety that would make Gatsby envious. Elegance and style are as important as ever, with the Gold Coast providing everything you need to furnish your home, fill your closets, stock your wine cellar and equip your garage. In fact, when it comes to shopping, cuisine and just about anything else, the words “World Class” are redundant when they accompany the words “Gold Coast.” I hope you enjoy this issue of Gold Coast Magazine as much as we enjoyed preparing it.

Her sculptures are carved from alabaster slabs, but the creativity and planning behind each piece is in no way set in stone. Sculptor Suzanne Posner pours her heart and soul into each of her creations, many of which go through various permutations as she works to make the stone come alive. “The stones tend to guide one,” Suzanne said in the sunlit gallery of her Great Neck home. She orders alabaster from a supplier who travels the globe in search of stone of various color, shape and size. Suzanne, herself a globetrotter who has traveled through five continents, eyes the stone first for color, then for a “stimulating shape.” Working with a hammer, chisel, files and sandpaper in her home studio, Suzanne takes off the rough edges and then imagines what the stone could be. The amount of time it takes to complete one sculpture varies. Suzanne may alternate work on up to five different pieces at a time. Additionally, what she initially sees in a stone may change as she gets deeper into the carving process. Take, for instance, her sculpture titled “Lost.” She started to carve a woman holding a laughing baby, but what emerged was a man who appeared to be holding a sad woman. She wanted to portray why the woman was sad, so she used extra stone on the woman’s back to carve her lost fetus. “Most sculptures I have carved I started out with a vision significantly different than that of the finished piece,” she said. A dentist by trade, Suzanne has always had an affinity for sculpting. Lost

She enrolled in a sculpting class at the Cumberland Adult Center in Great Neck. Since then, Suzanne has crafted dozens of alabaster pieces, including an award-winning sculpture that was recently on display at the Shelter Rock Gallery that is hosted by Manhasset’s Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock. From there, she went to Bryn Mawr College, where she majored in philosophy at Haverford College, and graduated in 1983. Suzanne completed her studies at UNC Chapel Hill Dental, earning a DDS in 1987. She and physician husband, Alan Katz, lived in Manhattan, and she enjoyed seven years of dental practice, ballroom dancing and classes at the Art Students League of New York, where she is a life member. Children — two sons, now ages 17 and 20 — prompted a move back to Great Neck. Her life, including young womanhood, pregnancy and family, has been the inspiration behind much of her work. These days, Suzanne is a full-time artist. She paints and crafts clay sculptures, but stone sculptures are her primary focus. “An artist can use any materials at her disposal,” she said. “I prefer 3D because of the tactile. 2D is just

a translation of 3D. I like to get a sculptural feeling in my paintings. When artists use a variety of media, they become better in all of their media.” Many of Suzanne’s alabaster sculptures can be viewed on her website, http://suzanneposner. wordpress.com. ■

Party like it’s 1925 Numerous alcoholic cocktails were consumed during the Roaring ‘20s (The Last Word: gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime juice; Sidecar: Cognac, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice; and Fallen Angel: gin, white crème de menthe, lemon, bitters and a cherry), but the only one to be mentioned by name in The Great Gatsby was the Gin Rickey. In chapter 7 of this 1925 classic explication of the Gold Coast lifestyle, Daisy asks Tom to make drinks to cool everyone off on the hot summer day. He returns with “four gin rickeys that clicked full of ice. Gatsby took up his drink. ‘They certainly look cool,’ he said, with visible tension. We drank in long, greedy swallows.” The Gin Rickey is a simple highball of gin, lime juice and club soda. The story about the origins of the drink, confirmed by David Wondrich, the drinks columnist for Esquire magazine, is that the Gin Rickey was invented in the late 1880s by Colonel Joseph Rickey, a Missouri congressman, lobbyist, noted gambler and bourbon lover who had fought in the Civil War. As Wondrich tells the story, it was the late 1880s when the Colonel asked a bartender at Shoomaker’s Bar in D.C. to create what was then considered an odd mix of ingredients: bourbon, ice, lime juice and soda. It immediately became a trendy drink, and by the early 1890s the bourbon had morphed into gin and it could be found throughout the country. The drink is so associated with Washington, D.C., where it is described as “air conditioning in a glass,” that July has been designated as Rickey Month there. Wondrich says the drink has been popular on and off ever since, and evidently it was in favor in the ‘20s when Gatsby was written. GOLD COAST MAGAZINE | 19

I went to Revel in Garden City, a bar that the Gatsby crowd might have enjoyed, and asked them to mix up a Gin Rickey. In her five years of bartending, Jessica Liberto, who is a fan of The Great Gatsby and remembers reading about the Gin Rickey, has never been called upon to mix the drink, but now she has mastered it, creating the original Gin Rickey and the new Revel Restaurant Gin Rickey. To make the classic Gin Rickey, Jessica added Tanqueray, a dry gin, to lime juice, shook it with ice, and then topped it off with carbonated water and stirred. For the Revel version, she prepared a simple syrup with fresh ginger and honey to give it a bit of sweetness and muddled it with lime. She chose Hendricks Gin, which, in addition to the traditional juniper taste, infuses Bulgarian rose and cucumber to add flavor. Jessica thought the lightness of its cucumber flavor would add a little extra something. “Sometimes the dry gin is a bit overpowering,” she said. She finished the drink with soda water. “We don’t know if the Colonel would have approved of the Revel Gin Rickey. He thought that sugar heated the blood,” says Wondrich. “I like the lemonadey quality.” ■

Gerardo Rasetta, a master tailor from world-renowned men’s fashion house Brioni, crossed the Atlantic to talk with Victor Talbots’ staff and Gold Coast clients about the finest in men’s fashion. Gerardo, with 10 years experience as a tailor in Rome, wowed the crowd with his knowledge of fabrics, measurements and tailoring arts.

A good suit begins with quality fabric, he insisted, with natural fibers de rigeur at the high-end fashion house as at Victor Talbots. “There are no polyester suits in this store or any made from Brioni,” Gerardo said, “only 100 percent natural.” Wool is the most popular natural fabric; indeed, one of the most expensive fabrics used by the house is vicuna, from a rare South American relative of the llama. Still, other natural fibers offer benefits of their own. Cotton/silk is light and breathable in summer, cashmere is warm and soft for winter, and linen, Gerardo explained, can be worn in either season. The shine of a wool/silk blend makes that a popular choice, too, he said. This event at the store on Glen Cove Road in Greenvale was to provide local clients a more intimate look at the luxurious Brioni brand, while showing other formal-wear brands such as Oxxford, Kiton and Hugo Boss. “I think this is great,” said Alan Chalup, a Roslyn resident and loyal customer for more than 10 years. “And I might just buy something today; it’s a one-of-a-kind store.” Scott Shafiroff came looking to buy a tuxedo for his daughter’s wedding. “I know I am going to find just the right fit and look here,” he said. A Port Washington designer captures the lifestyle in a look. It’s no wonder Keith Baltimore considers himself an anthropologist. To most clients, he’s a creative master of interior design for some of the most beautiful homes on the Gold Coast. For the past 30 years, he’s made his livelihood fusing together whatever it is his client wants, be it styles in antique, art deco, traditional, contemporary or Asian. He’s seen it all in his constant travels around the world, and brings his interpretations to homes not just on the Gold Coast, but also in New York City, the Hamptons and Florida. “I’m an anthropologist because I have to get into people’s heads to do what I do,” said Keith, whose Baltimore Design Center is on Main Street in Port Washington. “I figure out what they want and make it happen.” According to Keith, his looks are so vast and so unorthodox “because at the end of the day, I’m leaving my client’s house; it’s the people living inside who have to love their home.” When discussing the shifts and changes in interior design, Keith notes several factors that influence how people have come to want their homes furnished. For one, as a society our lifestyles have changed, technologies have changed, and so the visuals have changed, too. “People are really focused on what they really need, instead of all the opulence of swags and fabric and an overabundance of fluffiness,” he said. 28 | GOLD COAST MAGAZINE

For Keith, it’s simple. “It’s all dependent on the customer,” he said. “I have to do my homework and discover each client’s personality. The Art of Philanthropy By Lyn Dobrin Expect to see swirls of color and lots of flowers at the Nassau County Museum of Art’s Ball “Masquerade in the Garden” on June 14, as celebrators take their cues from the current exhibit “Garden Party.” Perhaps someone will use the vivid blues and oranges as seen in David Hockney’s “Breakfast Table” or the muted lavender and pink in Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Coxcomb.” Or they can imitate the picnickers in Maurice Prendergast’s “The Promenade.” Even those who prefer somber tones can use Robert Mapplethorpe’s gelatin silver print, “Rose,” to stay in their comfort zone. You can be sure the theme will be taken seriously, as witnessed by last year’s Great Gatsby Ball where F. Scott and Zelda ruled the roost and there were lots of men in sharp tuxedos and women in shimmery slinky dresses. Michael Brown, founding partner and senior partner of the law firm Ohrenstein and Brown in Garden City, who co-chairs the Museum’s corporate committee, is a big fan of Marc Chagall, so I asked if he expected to be inspired by Chagall’s “Le repos,” which is in the exhibit. He said he wasn’t planning anything special, but continued, “I can’t speak for my wife.” The gala supports the Museum’s extensive educational efforts. “We’re not only a museum,” said Michael’s co-chair Robert Mayer, managing partner of Mayer CPAs LLP, Syosset and New York City. “We have a phenomenal education program in art for kids.” The Museum welcomes 20,000 Nassau County students every year to exhibitions and for art-related activities. The stated purpose of the program is to focus on creating opportunities for students and teachers to think creatively and collectively as they consider the power of art “to help us learn, to make us wonder, and to move us personally.” “What the museum does for our schools is not really well known,” said Michael.

With many schools cutting back on art programs, the Museum is able to maintain art as a part of children’s education. “You’ll see school buses pulling up every day,” said Michael. The art programs at the Museum are provided at no cost to the school districts. The Museum’s Art Partners program provides long-term partnerships, allowing for the development of a deep and sustained relationship between schools and the Museum. Art Partners enriches educational 38 | GOLD COAST MAGAZINE

experiences through engagement with visual art tailored to meet the needs of each class. Classes visit all exhibits and teachers participate in professional development programs where they are given an introduction to current exhibits. The Museum partners with 11 school districts and a private school. “Museum visits often inspire teachers to extend the experience back at the school through writing and visual art activities,” said Laura Lynch, education director.

The Nassau County Museum of Art’s annual gala is a fundraising masterpiece. The Museum’s Autism and the Arts Program, in partnership with the Queens Museum of Art, promotes expression in children with autism by using visual material as a catalyst for communication. The Museum also conducts programs for adults, such as the Conversations in the Galleries, in partnership with Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center. This program invites adults who are enrolled in the JCC program for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease to visit the museum and engage in an active learning experience with original works of art in order to maintain cognitive function.

The Museum’s connection to the community extends into the college arena. Students from Nassau Community College’s Fashion Design Club, under the direction of professors Joe Pescatore and Heidi O’Connell, have designed and executed garments for several balls including the Great Gatsby, Surrealism and Art and Fashion. This year, they are creating masks that will be part of the fundraising. A mask will be given to each of the 200 people who buys a raffle ticket for the grand prize of a diamond band valued at $3,200 from Ambalu Jewelers in East Hills. THE (OTHER) PIANO MAN For Glen Cove’s Rick Smith, this isn’t merely an instrument, it’s an obsession. To the casual eye, the old warehouse on School Street in Glen Cove that holds Rick Smith’s Piano Exchange is a place where pianos are bought, sold, restored and refinished. But take a closer look, and you’ll be transported back in time, as far back as 1853, and find yourself in a museum-like environment of American musical and cultural history filled with revelations and surprises. Stand on the balcony of Long Island’s oldest piano dealership, overlooking the 53- by 100-foot main floor display, and you’ll see restored pianos of every shape, size and variety shoehorned into every square inch of space. The balcony itself holds 40 pianos. Rick has close to 500 pianos. They take up so much space that many of them have to be housed in another building. But it’s behind the curtains and upstairs where you’ll find such rarities as a 1931 Steinway baby grand with striking wood inlays depicting other musical instruments that Rick believes may have been originally owned by the Otis Elevator family. In another area, there’s a Steinway, circa 1853, purported to be the second Steinway ever made. Carefully stored on its side, close by, is a piano that belonged to Babe Ruth. Rick, whose goal is to somehow turn his very crowded building into a piano museum, is also the proud owner of the Clyde Fitch piano that was handpainted by American artist Everett Shinn in 1908. Fitch was a prominent Broadway playwright near the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th who commissioned Shinn to create what is considered by many to be the most elaborately decorated piano ever produced in the United States. But the Piano Exchange is not just about pianos. Rick has assembled an extensive collection of films and 16mm movies. He’s a big devotee of movie musicals and the Great American Songbook, focusing on the popular music of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, when Hollywood and the Songbook were so strongly connected. On weekends, he turns his repair shop into a 60-seat screening room for friends, complete with a popcorn machine. He’s also got thousands of piano rolls (used in player pianos and reproducing pianos) stored in a side room, along with sheet music, old records, movie posters and memorabilia neatly tucked into side rooms and spaces all over the building. For all of his interest in the piano, Rick really doesn’t play. “I actually always wanted a piano when I was growing up,” he said. “We lived in a tenement house where Lincoln Center is now, and we had no space. We had no money. I’ve kind of compensated for that because I’ve got so many pianos now.” But Rick was able to play a few bars of one of the most popular American songs ever (“Stardust,” by Hoagy Carmichael) for a recent visitor, and reveal some little-known facts behind the song. “The melody for ‘Stardust’ was written by Carmichael in 1927 as a jazz piece, and it sat around for awhile,” Rick said. “The words were written by Mitchell Parish, who was a lyricist, and they said, ‘Here, Mitch, see what you can do with this.’ At first, he couldn’t do it, but then he heard it played slowly as a ballad. He wound up writing 700 songs, all of which were done after the music had been written first.” “Back then,” Rick continued, “there were only a handful of people who wrote both words and music — Irving Berlin, Frank Loesser, Cole Porter to mention a few. Most writers, though, were of two different minds, one was a musician, and the other was a poet.” Rick had a long, reverential and memorable friendship with Parish until the lyricist died in 1993. They even worked together on the 1987 Broadway show Stardust: The Mitchell Parish Musical.

Rick, who is single and won’t tell his age (“Like Jack Benny, I’m always 39”), has lived in Glen Cove since 1965. He started off in the auto body business before switching to pianos in 1972. “I had just finished restoring a blue pearlescent Corvette for a customer and was upset when I heard that the driver totaled it shortly after I finished it,” he recalled. “Restoring a piano is more of a permanent thing.” When discussing the value of any of his rare pianos, Rick usually hesitates to quote a price. “They’re all historic in one way or another,” he said of his collection. “I’ve accumulated them over these past 37 years. It’s the largest collection of rare pianos in the world. Everything you can see on the main floor is for sale, but the ones hiding under the balcony and in the corner are not. This is my museum.” Rick has encountered many famous composers, lyricists and performers over the years, and remembers meeting Liberace when he visited the star’s museum in Las Vegas.

“I went there because I wanted to see what he had,” Rick said. “Liberace collected pianos. He was a very nice fellow, but he didn’t have as much compared to my collection.” Glen Cove’s Piano Man also recalls meeting Long Island’s Piano Man, Billy Joel, when he stopped by the shop. “He didn’t say much,” said Rick. “He just looked around. He likes to collect motorcycles.” As Rick sees it, pianists have a different relationship with the instrument than he does. “People who play the piano generally aren’t interested in collecting pianos,” he said. “Liberace was an exception. To most players, the piano is just a tool for their purpose. A carpenter generally isn’t interested in hammers. It’s a tool for them. They use it for a purpose, and then they toss it aside.” Rick, of course, does the opposite, and continues his quest to create a piano museum. “I’m sure hoping to do that one of these days,” he said. “I can’t figure it out from where I am now as to where I want to be. It’s going to take some money. I already have the building and the open space. It’s kind of cluttered now, but I have to get everything out and redesign it as a museum space. Our main business right now is, of course, restoring fine vintage pianos.” ■

Although beef consumption in the U.S. has dropped in recent years, we still eat more meat per person here than in almost any other country on the planet. Only tiny Luxembourg beats us out on a per capita basis. So we’re still eating meat, and those of us who live on Long Island’s Gold Coast don’t have to go any farther than Northern Boulevard to find five steak houses to indulge our desire for a good steak: Burton & Doyle, Rothmann’s Steak House, Peter Luger, Morton’s and Bryant & Cooper. To get a sense of what’s going on in steak houses today, I spoke with Jody Storch, the vice president of Peter Luger Steak House, and Michael Enright, the manager of Morton’s, and discovered two very different approaches, each with great success.

Steak in the Heart Established in Brooklyn in 1887 (the Great Neck restaurant opened in 1960), Peter Luger is the granddaddy of steakhouses, or perhaps we should call it the grandmother of steak houses, since women have been the meat buyers since the Forman family took over the restaurant in 1950. As the Forman family granddaughter, Jody Storch, tells the story, her grandfather, Sol Forman, had a factory that produced metalwares directly across the street from Peter Luger in Brooklyn. He dined there twice a day. “When the restaurant went up for sale in auction, he felt he must have it, even though he knew nothing about the restaurant business,” said Jody. GOLD COAST MAGAZINE | 49

From hard-core tradition to beef with a modern twist, steak your claim on the Gold Coast. It was decided that his wife, Marsha Forman, would learn about meat. A retired meat grader was hired, and Marsha was taught about color and marbling and aging. Jody loves the contrast of her elegant grandmother, always beautifully dressed with her hair in a neat bun, donning her butcher’s coat, boots and hat when she went to the meat market. In turn, Marsha taught Jody’s mother, Marilyn Spiera, and her aunt, Amy Rubenstein. These days, Jody, Marilyn and Marsha select every piece of meat that is served in the restaurants. “There’s a certain purity we’ve kept,” says Jody, “by keeping it in our hands.” A favorite of Peter Luger customers is their steak sauce that can be purchased in the restaurants and ordered online. Before it was bottled in 1984, customers would bring in empty mayonnaise jars to be filled up with the sauce. The Peter Luger website describes the sauce as somewhere between cocktail sauce and traditional steak sauce. It is also possible to order their steaks for home delivery. Over the years, there has been very little change in the menu, said Jody. The menus in both restaurants are pretty much the same, except that Great Neck also offers lobster and chicken. “We’ve had the formula that’s been successful for us,” she said. At the Brooklyn location there are regulars and lots of tourists; Great Neck attracts families and people who’ve come there as kids. “It’s the one place you can go to and not a lot has changed,” she said. 50 | GOLD COAST MAGAZINE

At Peter Luger, some things (fortunately) never change.

Change is Good When the recession hit, Morton’s, a chain of more than 70 steak houses worldwide, needed to scrutinize its menu and make changes to keep going. Gone were the expense account business dinners and the extravagant dinners hosted by pharmaceutical companies to lure doctors to their products. “The economy made restaurants in higher tiers make changes to stay in business,” said Michael Enright. Morton’s decided to offer different values on different levels to allow people to come in more than once a year. “Middle income people don’t want to spend $110 a head,” said Michael. To ease the pain in the purse, Morton’s instituted a steak and seafood menu where customers could order salad, side, seafood, steak and dessert at $120 for two people. They introduced bar bites — smaller plated options available at the bar, serving mini cheeseburgers, steak sandwiches and crabcake BLTs every day for $7 a plate ($15 on Saturdays). One thing that Michael credits for their continued success in the current economy is the quality of the meat and their attentive service.

“You’re not going to go to Le Bernardin and spend money on foie gras and demi glaze reductions,” he said. “But people trust the meat that is in front of them in a steak house they know.” Michael says that people want to feel they’re taken care of. “When they’re in your seat, they’re your guest to lose,” he said. An interesting change at Morton’s involves wine. These days, customers are educated on wine and understand what they’re drinking. Over the years, said Michael, they have learned how much more appetizing their entrée is when they pair it with wine. A man prepares a steak at Peter Luger, but for generations, women have been the restaurant’s meat buyers.

In the age of grand country homes, Little Ipswich was modestly magnificent.

A Lost Gem

Immortalized in The Great Gatsby, the North Shore at the first half of the 20th century was known for its lavish homes and gardens, and often its equally grand residents. Of the 1,200 country houses that once dotted the shoreline, one house stands out as having equal parts of both, but was wrapped in a much smaller package. Yet when it was razed in the spring of 1995, not one word was mentioned in any newspaper, and it became a small but forgotten gem. This house was the work of Muttontown resident William Delano of Delano & Aldrich, one of the top architectural firms of the day, who was responsible for Oheka, the largest house ever constructed on Long Island and the second largest in the U.S. By no means a goliath, nearly all of this

house could have fit into Oheka’s ballroom and library, yet it was as grand and elegant in its design as the finest large country house. A short drive from Oheka, it was nestled across from another Delano, the Woodlands (Ailsa Mellon Bruce house; now a catering facility at the Town of Oyster Bay golf course) in the Woodbury enclave, then part of Syosset. The compact estate had all the amenities of a larger compound, including a well-appointed stable, a greenhouse and several other accessory structures. Upon its completion, it was featured in all of the periodicals where you would expect a fine home to debut, including Town & Country and Vogue. Delano, however, cannot get all of the credit for this masterpiece, as his friend — and the property’s owner — Ruby Ross Wood collaborated. GOLD COAST MAGAZINE | 55

A prominent interior designer, Mrs. Wood wanted a country estate that was as elegant and chic as that of her and Delano’s well-heeled clientele, but on a smaller scale and budget. Dubbed Little Ipswich, for her husband, Chalmers’, hometown of Ipswich, Mass., it was a place where the Woods enjoyed many a season of entertaining friends and business associates away from their apartment at 277 Park Ave. Though influenced by England’s Kimbilton Castle, it could not be classified as a single style; it combined the best of Italian, French, Palladian and English. Perhaps one of the greatest small American country houses of the era, it has been described by many critics as a “jewel.” A favorite commission of Delano, he asked that the house be the backdrop for his portrait by Bernard Boutet de Monvel, and upon his first visit to the completed home he inscribed the guest book with these words: Together we have planned this house With love have sought, in brick and stone To model here a perfect home So fashioned that the shadows of fall In pleasant patterns on the wall, And so disposed that rooms have sun, With space and air in every one. It’s finished…Only time can tell Wheather we’ve done it ill or well. For me, who love both you and it The time has come to write “exit” Before I leave one thing I do: Pray God that peace may be with you. Billy Baldwin, Mrs. Wood’s protégé, recalls the time he spent at Little Ipswich with inspiration and fondness many times in his autobiography. Not easy to sum up the house in a few short words, but its details included an enclosed whitewashed brick motor court guarded at its entrance by two Italian stone sphinxes. The single-story U-shaped brick house was dominated by a three-bay Doric portico, crowned with a large verdigris copper dome with a gilded swan weather vane. 56 | GOLD COAST MAGAZINE

A favorite animal of Mrs. Wood, swans were a theme throughout the house, with several live swans on the pond behind the house. The entrance hall, with its four arched doorways, resembled a garden pavilion, and was flooded with sunlight from the large French doors to the rear terrace, providing the feeling of being in a garden folly. The domed ceiling of the hall was painted with an elegant mural of swans and hearts inspired by a ceiling at the Palazzo del Te, in Mantua, Italy. The floor was a simple polished terrazzo of black and cream in the form of a compass star, from which all the rooms radiated. Mrs. Wood carefully handpicked all the finishes and details, including a mantel of old marble for the library and a lime-wood over-mantel in the Adams style taken from a long-forgotten London house that provided inspiration for the coloring of its pine walls. Her bedroom displayed both French and English influence, and the elaborate floor was removed from a very old French maison.

After Mrs. Wood’s death in 1950, Little Ipswich became the home of the Italian count Giorgio Uzielli. The Uziellis enjoyed the home for the next 30 years, until his death in 1984. The estate was sold by Uzielli’s son to a developer, but the house sat empty on its remaining 28 acres during the real estate recession of the late ‘80s. Left for ruin in the early 1990s, the developer walled off the main hall, dining room and library, using it as a sales office. The rest of the house remained sealed up like a time capsule. When I first journeyed up its overgrown winding drive as a teenager to photograph it, the place appeared to be stricken with a creeping paralysis, marching off-beat from the rest of the world, moving in slow motion. Yet even veiled in vines, and damaged by weather and vandals, Little Ipswich still felt welcoming, holding onto a grander time of cool summer breezes and chic cocktail parties; I imagined the wonderful stories the house could tell. Inside, there were plates and serving dishes from the Uziellis still in the pantry cupboards, cloth napkins scattered on the floors of the old kitchen, and queerly, in spite of everything, a neatly stacked volume of old Fortune magazines from the 1930s and ‘40s, probably from Mr. Wood. There were tattered drapes and broken glass that cast odd shadows on the once prized antique French floor of Mrs. Wood’s bedroom. Even some of Mr. Uzielli’s books were still on the shelves in the library, most of which were lost during demolition. Little Ipswich made a lasting impression on me and countless others, as it had the Woods, Delano, Baldwin and the Uziellis. And even after the house was razed, anytime I drive along Syosset-Woodbury Road where the entrance once stood, I get the feeling of having lost an old friend. Sadly, the stable, the last memory of Little Ipswich, was bulldozed to make way for two new subdivision houses in 2004, and only a few trees from the driveway allée survive. ■

The meticulously manicured greens and fairways, the picturesque setting and the manor house — yes, a manor house — say “country club: members only.” But this is not the world of $100,000 initiation fees, blazers and chits. This is the Town of Oyster Bay’s Honorable Joseph Colby Golf Course in Woodbury. “Many who play this municipal course feel that it compares favorably to some of the finest private courses in the country,” said Town Supervisor John Venditto. Oyster Bay’s virtues are numerous, say regulars. To Roger Meyer, a Sea Cliff resident who has been playing the 6,376-yard, par70 course since it opened in 1989, it’s the staff.

“Everyone’s so friendly,” he said. “It’s a beautiful course and the staff works with us and makes things go smoothly.” And the variety. “Every hole is different,” Meyer said. “Every day you play it, it plays differently.” Meyer tees off here about 75 times a year, and said that his best round ever was a 73. In 1993, he shot a hole-in-one on the 12th hole. “The course is difficult,” said Kenneth Adrian McCartney, who’s been playing here for 15 years. “The staff is excellent. The people are very pleasant and they keep the course in A-1 shape. It’s so well maintained.” GOLD COAST MAGAZINE | 61

It looks like a private club. It plays like a private club. But this Gold Coast jewel is open to everyone. Tony Curcio, director of Golf Operations, estimates that almost 30,000 rounds of golf are played here annually. The course, at South Woods Road and Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, is open year round, weather permitting, and closed to the public on Mondays, when private outings and fundraisers are often hosted. James Panciroli has been at Oyster Bay since the beginning, and for the past four years, superintendent of the course. He and his full-time staff of six mow the greens six days a week and the fairways four times a week. Andy Rothstein, director of operations for the Town of Oyster Bay, admires the high level of work done by Panciroli and his team. “They take full ownership of this course,” he said. “This is their baby.” Panciroli recalled the difficulties that he and his staff faced after Superstorm Sandy. “We lost over 100 trees during the storm,” he said. “The town did an outstanding job in helping us get the trees cut and removed. And we were able to open up the following spring.” Losing so many trees wasn’t all bad, since it let in more sun and made for better air movement on the course. Designed by noted golf architect Tom Fazio, Oyster Bay is built on what was the 120-acre Bruce estate, which the town bought in the 1970s. “Throughout the years, there were many proposed uses for the property,” said Rothstein. “Many officials in town thought that a golf course was the best way to showcase and preserve the land. The manor [now housing The Woodlands, a catering facility] and the stables were kept intact.”

One such official, Joseph Colby, who was town supervisor for a decade, is credited with leading the development of the course. “Joe Colby’s stewardship was a key component to making it a reality,” said current Supervisor Venditto. “His collective efforts have made a positive difference…that is still evident today.” A year ago, the course was named in Colby’s honor. Colby and his wife now live in Florida. For players, the challenges range from the par-3, 226-yard eighth hole — which many view as one of the toughest par-3s on Long Island — to a very difficult par-4, 378-yard fourth hole. “I think four is definitely the toughest hole,” said Curcio. “It’s fairly long and narrow, and even if you get a drive down the middle, the elevation of the green for the average player makes it challenging to get the ball up there.” “Once you’re on the green, you’re surrounded by bunkers and contours. I haven’t made a birdie there since Reagan was President,” he laughed. The high elevation makes it impossible for golfers to see the green, even when they line up their approach shots.

“With only 120 acres available, we’re undersized by today’s standards,” said Curcio. “Although it’s a short course, you’ve got to hit it straight. The greens are classic, with undulations and contours. The newer courses have much bigger greens. We don’t have an abundance of room, but the architect [Fazio] made it work.” There are several membership options for both residents and non-residents.
