Growing Up In Port At Christmastime When Christmas was near, nineyear-old Ralphie Parker made it clear to his family and Santa Claus that all he wanted for Christmas was a Red Ryder BB gun. If you want to know whether Santa came through for Ralphie, you’ll have to watch the 1983 movie, A Christmas Story. In reality, the picture is a fictionalized account by Jean Shepherd of his growing up in Hammond, IN, at Christmas time. The film opened quietly, almost unnoticed. But over the years, thanks to television and word-of-mouth, this sleeper was awakened. It is now an annual classic surrounding the Christmas holidays on television. And don’t worry. There are no objectionable four-letter words, which doesn’t mean A Christmas Story is below adult-level watching. It’s a warm and funny picture for you and your children. Growing up around Christmas time in Port, according to seven folks whose recollections follow, left them with memories that are at all at once similar and dissimilar. One thing for sure, they haven’t been forgotten. Take my old next-door neighbor on Prospect Avenue, Louie Zwirlein (a.k.a. Dick), he remembers that his world 75 years ago was confined to the

Everything I needed was within that space,” Louie recalled. Note if you will, that Louie identified “Louie’s” as his westernmost boundary. Why not? It was his family’s restaurant started by his father, Louis I., who opened that picturesque, never-tobe-seen-again gathering-place for the hungry — and of course — thirsty folks in Port Washington and from all over. “Christmas time was always very special,” Louie said. What made it so very special, was my question? His answer was quick and delivered with a chuckle: “Getting out of school for the vacation.”

GROWING from page 3C After we both laughed, Louie gave me the facts: “We looked forward to the snow so that we could sled down the hill on Second Avenue. Then there was ice skating on Baxter’s Pond. The Mill Pond was mostly kids from that area. It was very territorial.” Christmas dinner at the Zwirleins’ was not exactly for family members only. As Louie remembers it, “It was a big affair,” he said, “with my mother and father, my brother and sister and usually several people from Louie’s or the waterfront area who had no place to go. One year, we had four Norwegian sailors who were taking a large boat back to Norway and were stranded here because of the weather and were living on the boat. It was always a warm and friendly group.” And what did Louie the kid do after his Christmas dinner? “After dinner, it was always off to the movies. That’s where everyone went,” he said, and added for everyone who reads his saga, “Happy Holidays to you all.”

At the other end of the age scale, there’s Lucas Battista, who will turn eleven this coming Jan. 5. His is a large clan. One of the family’s traditions is an adaptation and of The Yankee Swap which is, unsurprisingly, about swapping gifts. The Battistas et al call their version “Yankee Present Exchange.” Lucas, in years to come, will remember drawing straws to choose a wrapped gift and hoping it was something he wanted. His mother, Stephanie Hall Battista, describes the game as “highly competitive,” and “inevitably ended up fighting — good-naturedly — for the Electric Chocolate Fountain or a matching mugs set.” You can bet that Lucas can hold his own in that game, adults in attendance notwithstanding. “My mother,” Stephanie recalls,
“was and still is an organist at the Congregational Church and holidays were filled with choir rehearsals, performances, and services.” A Schreiber High graduate in 1970, she remembers lending her mezzo-soprano voice to the school’s choir. “At the Christmas eve midnight service, all the present high school choir members and alumni would gather to sing,” she said. “I have fond memories of my best friend, Jeremy Mann, and so many others. It was always so great.” On such occasions, the evening’s soloist was the Metropolitan Opera’s John Alexander. (Pause, please, for an author’s note: If my memory hasn’t taken a vacation, I believe the Met’s — not the baseball team, of course — John Alexander was once Broadway’s John Alexander as one of the leads in On The Town, the first hit show for its creators, Leonard Bernstein, Betty Compton and Adolph Green. It launched the three on long and illustrious careers in music and the theater.) “He would be whisked away from the Met just in time to sing ‘Jesu Bambino’ and ‘Oh Holy Night’, said Stephanie and continued, “And at the stroke of midnight, my mom would play a chime on the organ signifying the arrival Christmas. I used to hear her whisper, ‘One, two, three, etc.,’ just to make sure that the clock didn’t strike thirteen o’clock.”
‘Merry Christmas’ Banner Reed Markham of the Markham/ Bayles family is a true clam digger, a fourth-generation Port Washington resident — and an old friend. So it seemed natural to ask him about Christmas time in Port. His friendly response: “Sorry, I can’t help you — as most of my Christmases were spent in Williston Park and a few times in Texas with my other grandparents.”

Reed, aware of my surprise and disappointment, added, “One thing I do remember that in the late 50s and early 60s, there was a large Merry Christmas banner across Port Washington Boulevard. It was by the police station.” Reed said, “Best of luck with your story about Christmas in Port Washington.” And that was the long and short of it. Bob Carrick, a Schrieber graduate of 1974, remembers Christmastime in Port as not always a happy holiday. However, out of sadness sometimes grows a deeper understanding of the challenges that others face. “Most years,” Bob said, “I spent with my mother at Christmas time. She would see someone she knew who had no family and nowhere to go for the holiday and ask them to join our family. My brother, Mike, and I often joked about who might be coming for Christmas this year. Looking back now, I am thankful for the lesson her compassion taught me.” As Martha would say, that’s a good thing. Bob’s ability to remember something good even from times less than good is, to me, a sign of good values — and one’s values are a dead giveaway to someone’s character. “Christmas for me,” he said, “is about time with family, times with friends and every year meeting a new friend.” Why not? Family time, remembering friends and making new friends is a prescription for life that is sweeter than a thousand Santa’s sleighs loaded only with candy canes. “It was a family adventure,” Linda Prudente recalls of her younger days in Port at Christmas time. “It was a family adventure, “ Linda said, with a literally, “every Christmas season for as long as I can remember, truckloads of Christmas trees from upstate were literally delivered to the front door of our house.” Linda’s front door opened on three and a half acres that were also the location of her family’s business, the Nuzzolese Ice, Coal & Wood Company. “We were surrounded by cords of wood and Christmas trees,” recollects Linda. “My grandfather Gus, my Aunt Ray and Uncle Jim, Uncle Paul and Aunt Arlene, and my parents Frank and Rita, would sell the Christmas trees and the hand-decorated wreaths that hung on across our front porch.” Hold it. Enough about evergreens. How about the food? Linda was ready for that. “Mom always had our extended family for the traditional Italian fish Christmas Eve dinner, even though she was born in Holland,” she said. Christmas Eve turned into an open house for Frank Nuzzolese and his family. As Linda describes it, “My mother would have more food
than you could imagine. Family and friends would come and go till well past midnight. It became a tradition that I have carried through with my husband, Peter and children.”
Christmas: ‘Church, Family, Presents’ According to Jim Garafolo, “Generally, Christmas in Port was going to church, having a big family meal, presents around a real tree, music and a warm fire.” His has a heart-felt wish to make every day like Christmas in Port.

As an engineer, Jim is more about doing things than just talking about them. “I would like to see that people make it a tradition to do something to make this world a better place, every day and twice on Christmas,” said Jim. “Port Washington was a wonderful town to experience Christmas as a child,” said Bill Gordon. “Whenever it snowed, I would grab my Flexible Flyer — which I still have — throw it in the back of our station wagon and be dropped off for four or five hours of sledding. Old Glory and Suicide Hill at Plandome Country Club were our favorites.” If I were to hazard a guess, many kids of long ago shared those kinds of experiences, and will never forget them. “Hampton Court was a special place for me as a child at Christmas,” said Bill, “We would gather every Christmas Eve
at exactly 6 p.m. in front of our 40-foot fully decorated tree festooned with bright, colored lights, and Santa would appear from the top of the hill bringing a gift for each child on the block.” So, there you have it. Holiday time is unique and universal. From opening presents to sledding down hills to singing Christmas carols, everyone has their own memory. But the holiday time also touches just about everyone in the same way. It is a time for being with one’s family and being thankful for all that one has. Holidays can bring out the best in people; you see it wherever you look. It’s just a matter of taking the time from the holiday hustle and bustle and enjoying what is all around. That’s the kind of happy picture I leave you with for now: creating special moments for family and friends to share for the rest of their lives. That’s a good thing, too.
