Call Me Today

From The Publisher Dear Neighbor, Thank you for reading Port Washington Magazine. Like the Port Washington News, which has been serving the community for 111 years, this new magazine was born here in Port at our Main Street office. For us, it was a challenging project. Not for editorial or technical reasons, but because we had to choose among the vast number of interesting people, important events and fun activities in the community. I wonder if anyone could muster enough paper and ink to capture all that is worth telling about Port. Each week, Port News Editor Karen Talley makes sure that the pages of the newspaper are bursting with the latest local news. And the website, www. PortWashington-News.com, is a great complement, with breaking news and opportunities for you to join the discussions. Yet, even with all of that coverage, there is more to tell, and tell it in a way that is best achieved with a magazine. As you well know, Port Washington is such a welcoming and wonderful place that those who live here never want to leave, and those who do leave long to return. The location — bays on two sides and Long Island Sound wrapping around — is a sailor’s, angler’s and nature-lover’s heaven. Its proximity to Manhattan is eminently practical. And the sense of community? Well, when many of you talk about it, there are misty eyes and cracking voices. That sense of community explains the phenomenal public schools. It explains the marvelous public library and other institutions and organizations. It explains the huge turnout for Pride in Port, HarborFest, the Red Stocking Revue and so many other philanthropic and just plain enjoyable events. It explains why Port is such an easy place to love, such a hard place to leave. With this, the inaugural issue of Port Washington Magazine, we hope we have captured that spirit.

Love Port Why I

People everywhere sing the praises of their hometowns, but everybody agrees that there is something special about Port Washington. In fact, many things are special about Port Washington. Here, people from around the community explain “Why I love Port.”

really never had to leave our adventure and, when we did, Port was always still with us.

Donna Jabbour Quinn, Laffey Fine Homes Twenty-five years ago when my husband and I decided to move to the burbs, Port Washington was our #1 choice because of the Chuck Idol, resident, small business owner diversity and great school system. I love Port Washington for its serpentine coastline, marinas, golf Little did we know that there is a feeling in the air in Port that courses, beaches and businesses. I love Port Washington for its part can be found in no other town. in the history of the sands of time, knowing New York City was built using Cow Neck Bay sand. Laurie Scheinman, wit & whim I love Port Washington because its residents opened up their hearts and wallets to support a little unknown shop dedicated to giving back. They humored the owner, clearly in the throes of a mid-life crisis, who knew nothing about retail and encouraged her passion. I love Port Washington because of the people and spirit of our wonderful town.

John C. Ball, resident When I was 13, I had a business at the Town Dock. I took my 2.5-hp outboard motor down to Bill’s Boats, rented a row boat, went over to the Town Dock and offered launch service for 25 cents. I would usually clear a little more than $20 a day. That was really good money in 1953. I’ve lived in Port for 68 years, and what I love most is the evening walk around the Town Dock, watching the sunset. Judy Ray, Carnel’s Printing I love Port because it is earthy and a water town. It has interesting, loving people and community-oriented organizations. Jeffrey A. Stone, Laffey Fine Homes and owner of www.TownAdvisor.com/portwashingtonny I can honestly say that I love Port because it’s all about the community and how special and unique it is to residents and businesses alike. Residents both younger and older donate their time and money to help one another in need. Port is an ethnically diverse and vibrant town offering many amenities, year-round events and many opportunities for volunteerism, which is what attracted me and my wife Ginny to live here. Annette Oestreich, vice president of finance, Residents For A More Beautiful Port Washington A sense of community, a sense of familiarity, a sense of belonging.

Arlene Wikow, Blue Ribbon Travel There are so many reasons to love Port Washington, beginning with the warm welcome we received when our doors opened on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014. This community offers a supportive network for businesses to succeed. Personally, I love the quaintness of the town, the harbor, the shops and the charming small-town feeling. Sharon Maier-Kennelly, executive director, Landmark on Main Street Port has the sophistication and culture that come with being so close to New York City, but it also has the heart and soul of a tight-knit small town. There are so many beautiful traditions that residents from all generations enjoy with their neighbors and friends: Community Chest’s Thanksgiving Day Run; the Pride in Port and Memorial Day Parades; Friday night concerts during the summer at the Bandshell; the Fall Festival at Cow Neck Historical Society; Cinema on the Bay; and — of course — attending events at Landmark on Main Street! Bobbie Polay, executive director, Port Washington Chamber of Commerce I love my job with the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce! For the past 25 years, I have had the pleasure and privilege of working with the brightest, friendliest and most community-spirited people anywhere. It

is a place where businesspeople, residents and government officials come together to work for one goal — keeping Port Washington one of the best places in the country to live, work and play. Kim Campbell, Campbell’s Carpet Service Let me count the ways. I love the parks and the restaurants. I love the Town Dock and the train station with a direct line into NYC. I love our small-town address and the opportunity of doing business in town for the past 49 years. Jean-Marie Posner, executive director of the Friends of the Sands Point Preserve; president of the Sands Point Civic Association and the Port Washington Senior Citizens Center. I enjoy living in a community that offers diversity in the landscape and culture, public parks and open spaces, waterfront amenities, a charming downtown centerpiece, convenient access to public transportation, and a caring group of interested residents who are willing to work to protect and maintain the quality of life here. It’s the place I take pride in calling my home. Elise May, Storytime Theater/Expressive Elocution Port is the best of all worlds; culturally diverse, artistically creative, close to the water and close to the city. I have theatre programs with children in the schools, summer shows and at the library. The community support is absolutely amazing. ■

Bodies Of Work By Marilou Giammona

Her journey began more than six decades ago. Port Washington artist Margaret Weissbach stepped into a “still life” class at The Art Students League of New York when she was just 11 years old. Shortly after she entered the room, however, she walked out. She wandered the hallways until she came across a classroom with a model inside and asked if she could join the group. And so it began. As much disinterest as she felt for the still life, her pull toward the human figure was infinitely greater. “That’s when I started working on the figure, and I’ve been painting the figure ever since,” Margaret said. Not realizing at the time that life is all about making choices, she now reflects, “That’s when I made my first choice.” An only child, Margaret was influenced and inspired by her music-critic father.

“He loved the arts,” she said. “He was very enthusiastic about my interest, and he did so many things to encourage me to continue to paint.” Indeed, while other children her age were outdoors skipping rope or playing stickball, she was attending concerts, ballets and operas with her parents. Additionally, her dad often surprised her by bringing home books on topics such as the Impressionists or the Italian Renaissance. Margaret attended The High School of Music & Art on West 135th Street in Manhattan, which merged into the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in 1984. The commute from Queens into Manhattan alone helped fire her passion and nurture her future as an artist. “I met wonderful people from all over the city,” she said. “At each stop of the subway, more kids got on. It was a great adventure! On Saturdays, we went to the Museum of Modern Art. That was one of our ways of socializing, since we came from all parts of the city.” PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 23

Next stop: Queens College. Margaret studied art at Queens, but transferred to the University of Wisconsin, which gave her more artistic freedom. She no longer had to tote her supplies on the subway to and from school, which limited her to fewer supplies and smaller canvases. Once settled in on campus in Wisconsin, she painted large portraits in oil on canvas. She enjoyed the freedom of being able to take a short walk to a studio, where all of her supplies and pieces were stored, at any time of the day or night. Margaret started her career at House Beautiful magazine, laying out pages of the publication. She eventually left to pursue teaching at City College. She earned a Master’s degree in art education from Adelphi University and went on to teach junior high school art in Queens. During this time, she married Murray and they had four daughters. “I had the kids, but along the way I took classes and joined art groups and had art shows in libraries,” Margaret said. “By the time all four went to college, I was well into painting and exhibiting and being with other artists, and it was great. I don’t think I could have done one without the other.” In the ‘80s, she took a volunteer spot in the education department of the New Museum, downtown on Broadway. This gig evolved into a part-time job, where she stayed for six years. In the early ‘90s, she left the New Museum to teach adult education in Great Neck, where she’s been ever since. Throughout the years, the figure remained her primary focus for both watercolors and printmaking.

“Watercolor is my second nature,” she said, but she fell in love with printmaking, specifically monoprints, after taking a class. To create a monoprint, she paints on a Plexiglas pane, then runs the pane and a sheet of paper through a printmaking press. “I took a [printmaking] class, and as soon as I started painting, I loved the feel of the brush moving across the plate and then carving out the whites. You can really play with it. It was very much like watercolor from the aspect of having the mobility. Oils are on canvas and not smooth; you can’t move it around like you can a watercolor. I like the thickness of the ink,” she said. As the plate goes through the press, the inks are pushed around, creating interesting effects. “I take this unplanned factor into account,” she said. “I may like it just the way it is, or may go back into it. It can be a flexible experiment that leads to development of creative new ideas.” What comes out of the press is a one-of-a-kind print. Not the first of a run of identical images. The printed image might be worked with various media or the plate might be reworked various ways. But trying to make a second print from the original, unaltered plate? No, that creates a very light copy, which is called a “ghost.” Margaret has been exhibiting her award-winning artwork for decades in shows from Mamaroneck to Sag Harbor and dozens of places in between. Through Sept. 25, her monoprints are on display at the Manhasset Public Library. Her floral watercolors are on view in Port Washington at the QW Gallery, 113A Main St. ■

Crossfit Port Washington

Just asking…Shannon Healy Interview by Colleen Maidhof

Why did you choose Crossfit? I love the workout, I love the intensity of it, and I love the way it makes me feel. I’ve done everything from boot camp to running. They were all great, but Crossfit made me feel strong. Seeing what I could accomplish at age 35 with three kids totally blew me away. What is your favorite workout? Murph’s. It’s an intense workout that entails a mile run, 200 pushups and 300 squats. We only do it twice a year, on Christmas and Memorial Day. The whole gym comes together, and then afterwards we go out and celebrate. It’s really fun. What can’t you resist? Pizza. I can’t resist pizza. What is your favorite place in Port Washington? Anywhere by the water.

LARGE SELECTION ENGAGEMENT RING MOUNTINGS

What is your favorite movie? The Godfather.

$200 & up. Over 5000 styles to choose from

How do you juggle a family with running the business? I have three little boys, so it’s definitely a lot of juggling. I have coaches who help me out all the time. I split my time between the two.

THE DIAMOND BOUTIQUE

What would you do without Crossfit? Crossfit is pretty much my life. When I’m not doing Crossfit, I spend time with my family. Crossfit is a huge part of my life, but the other big part of it is being with my family. 121645

Fine Jewelry Outlet

Is Crossfit for everyone? It’s something that you have to come in and experience. It’s an intense workout for everyone. An Olympic athlete and my grandmother can do the same workout. They just move at their own pace. ■

Let’s Have A Drink At The Club A toast to the specialties of the house at Port’s private havens

Mount Gay Mango Mojito Port Washington Yacht Club Louie Flores, head bartender

“I enjoy coming to work and feel like I’m on vacation here,” he says, quickly adding that he works hard. “I put some love into what I do...and shake it a lot.” To make the 3M: • 2 wedges lime • 3 small slices fresh mango • 6 leaves fresh mint • ½ oz. simple syrup • 2 ½ ounces Mount Gay rum • 1 ½ ounces club soda

At the Port Washington Yacht Club, one tropical fruit in particular is a club favorite. Head bartender Louie Flores mixes up the 3M, the Mount Gay Mango Mojito. For this popular drink, Louie combines Barbados’ Mount Gay rum with mango, lime, mint and club soda. Although this is the signature drink at PWYC, Louie says he is also famous for his margaritas. Why? “They like the way I make it, I guess.” Louie thinks that perhaps his enjoyment of his job comes through in his Muddle the lime, mango and mint and combine it with simple syrup and rum. margaritas. Add club soda; shake and serve; garnish with lime wedges and mint leaves. PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 33

Passion Fruit Cocktails North Hempstead Country Club Zulma Caceres, day bartender In Zulma Caceres’ native Colombia, passion fruit is one of the more popular fruits. “We use it in juices, ice cream, sorbet and smoothies with milk,” says Zulma, who is the day bartender at the North Hempstead Country Club in Port Washington. “It has the bitter and sour, but sugar makes it sweet-sour.” At North Hempstead, Zulma makes her own passion fruit concentrate, using it in martinis, margaritas and mojitos. Fresh passion fruit is one of the lesser known and infrequently used 34 | PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE

tropical fruits here in the northeast, but it is widely grown and enjoyed throughout South America and tropical and subtropical regions. The thick skin of this egg-sized fruit is inedible, but inside is a delicious golden pulp surrounding tiny, edible seeds. To make passion fruit concentrate: • 20 passion fruit • 5 tablespoons sugar • 16 ounces water Combine all in a blender and strain. Keep refrigerated. Add to drinks for a cool summer kick any time of the year.

Manhasset Bay Side and Dark ‘n’ Stormy Manhasset Bay Yacht Club Romel Duran, bartender Romel Duran, a bartender at the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club for 10 years, says that two drinks are the favorites with his customers — the Manhasset Bay Side and the Dark ‘n’ Stormy. For the Manhasset Bay Side, kind of a mojito, he combines Mount Gay rum, sweet and sour mix (which he prefers to limes) and fresh mint (which is grown in the club’s own garden) with club soda. A dash of Myers’s rum floats on top. The Dark ‘n’ Stormy (left) gets its dark from Black Seal rum and stormy from Bermuda ginger beer made with pure sugarcane. Romel says it goes well with summer and puts you in the right mood. ■ THE DUX® BED

We Pull For Port Despite competition from the many athletic and social activities available to Port Washington youngsters, the Friends of Port Rowing has established a robust program in just four years. What is it about rowing that draws a teenager’s attention away from more popular, more glamorous and certainly less grueling athletic choices? “Rowing changes a person,” said Monika Dorman, the acknowledged rowing guru of Port Washington, who, at 74, is known as the Grandmother of Port Rowing. “It has changed me. Young people who don’t have a sport they’re good at, they can row. I have so many letters from parents telling me how their children’s grades have increased and how their personalities have changed. Rowing does miracles. In rowing, every muscle in your body works. It gives you such an uplifting feeling that you feel that nothing can bother you.”

Of course, it’s not all euphoria. “If you are a hard worker and can put pain aside and be mentally and physically strong, you can have great success as a rower,” said Port Rowing’s Executive Director Steve Panzik. “There’s nothing more exhausting. The satisfaction of knowing what you just did when you finish a race — there’s nothing like it in the world. And it’s such a rewarding feeling when you’re out there on the water.” “I’ve rowed in these waters for 34 years,” said Monika, who lives in Sands Point with her husband, Neil, recalling how the program, now with more than 125 boys and girls, got its start. “I kept seeing other crews coming out in Hempstead Harbor and I was very annoyed and jealous. We’re surrounded by waters. Why don’t we have a crew?” Mitch Tamkin, a Garden City businessman, is the president of Friends of Port Rowing and has lived in Sands Point for 16 years. Monika recruited Mitch and Steve to help her start the program.

PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 39

A Port resident, Steve assisted in developing Manhasset High School’s team and was an accomplished rower at Temple University. He was offered a chance to try out for the Olympics, but chose to get his degree in physical therapy, and now runs the Power 10 Gym in Port. Mitch had been part of the Kent School team in Connecticut that won the silver medal in the 1976 world championships. He continued rowing at the University of Pennsylvania, where his crew won a national championship. Shortly after Monika enlisted him in Port Rowing, Mitch bought seven used boats and gave them to the program. The gift was a huge boost. 40 | PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE

“We were able to get all those boats and a trailer to haul them for the cost of just one brand-new eight-person boat,” he said. “Some of them weren’t exactly in great shape, but we still use them to this day.” From the early days, the program was ambitious, especially when it was expanded to middle-school students. “Our first year, we had 192 kids and we were the largest rowing program in New York State,” Mitch said. When Monika found that spending six months a year in Arizona with family made it hard for her to run the operation, Mitch took over the presidency.

In this community, rowing is the ultimate either/oar proposition

Founders and leaders: From left, Mitch Tamkin, Steve Panzik and Monika Dorman.

“It’s been fantastic what Mitch has done with Port Rowing,” said Monika. “Steve has been a wonderful coach. I’m so happy that the youth of Port Washington can profit from a sport that really can change them, improve them and bring them to good colleges.” “Rowing is something that every kid can do,” said Steve. “It’s a short learning curve.” He also believes that it’s perfect for the athlete who may not be able to perform at a high level in other team sports and is looking for an outlet for his or her energy. Unlike many other team sports, there are no cuts, but participants must sign a “contract” regarding alcohol and drugs, and that they’re accountable for their actions, dedication and attendance. Molly Alstodt, now in her senior year at Schreiber High School, is passionate about the sport. “Mitch told my dad about rowing when I was

in the eighth grade, and I just fell in love with it,” she said. “I switched over from soccer, and I just stuck with it and never quit. What you put into it is what you get out of it. You have to put in a lot of work if you want to win at the end of the day. What’s so bad about being out on the water all day? I definitely can’t imagine my life without rowing.” CJ Tantillo, who recently graduated from Schreiber and has entered Temple on a half rowing scholarship, credits rowing for his academic development. “I was always a decent student,” he said, “but I was never fantastic. Once I started rowing, I was more determined and I got a new sense of motivation. It made me realize that I needed to focus on school, and my grades went up. I had less time to do the work [because of rowing ac42 | PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE

tivities], so I got it all done in the little time that I had. Without rowing, I would not be where I am today. It’s created friendships that I never thought that I could have. We’re a family.” CJ is part of the team’s first “graduating class.” Five boys from that class are now attending Ivy League schools, and others are enrolled at Wesleyan, Northwestern and Johns Hopkins. Even though Friends of Port Rowing (www.portrowing.com) is not affiliated with Schreiber or Weber Middle School, most members attend those two schools. There are students in the program from at least eight other area schools, and even some from the city. There’s also a Masters program for adults, and 20 to 40 participate, depending on the season.

Laura Hall rows in the program at least twice a week, and her daughter, Corrine, now in her sophomore year, has rowed since she was in the eighth grade. “We encouraged her to try out for the team and that was it,” said Laura. “She was hooked.” “Rowing is the ultimate team sport,” the proud mom continued. “You have to all work together. If anyone goes off kilter in the boat, the boat doesn’t run the way it should. You have to really concentrate on working with the other people in the boat.” What’s ahead for the program? “The future is huge,“ said Mitch. “We are hoping to build a boathouse within the next year and have a permanent home. Right now, we’re kind of nomadic. Everything will then finally be under one roof.” ■

Dan’s Dog Walking and Pet Sitting

Interview by Colleen Maidhof

Just asking…Dan Reitman

Where was your first real job dealing with animals? The Manhasset Animal Hospital.

gets an email notification. When the specialist goes for a walk, the device tracks them, and they leave notes.

Why did you start this business? I didn’t really plan on starting this business. While working at the Manhasset Animal Hospital, I started walking dogs for a few clients here and there. I put up pink fliers for dog walking to make extra money, and people just started to call.

What are the most interesting pets you have watched? I’ve watched a really large tortoise, a cat with three legs and a Chihuahua that played a miniature piano on command. Do you ever get used to cleaning up after animals? I’ve been cleaning up after animals for a very long time. I’m not fazed by the smell of it anymore. As long as the bag doesn’t have holes in it, I’m a happy camper.

How many dogs have you walked at once? Five. What are your hours? I’ve walked dogs literally every hour of the day and night. One client uses us three times a day. We are at their house sometimes at 2 a.m. Do clients feel comfortable with strangers coming into their home?

We pair new clients with a team of pet care specialists that they are introduced to. We use a GPS-based system where there is a QR code left at the client’s house, so when the pet care specialist gets there, they scan in and the client

Do you always carry bags? I always carry them. I’ve been at events where I’ve pulled bags out of my suit pockets. I find them in my pocket even after the dry cleaner. ■

What a long, strange trip it’s been…

The Class

of ’64

By John Owens • Photos by Ann Parry

The music playing at the Port Washington Yacht Club on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 13, will be the Beatles, the Supremes and maybe even Manfred Mann’s “Do Wah Diddy Diddy.” But you won’t hear hip-hop. “We’re too old for rap,” insists Amy Bass, co-chair of the Schreiber High School Class of ‘64 Reunion Committee. But definitely not too old for a long weekend of golf, boat rides, get-togethers and tours of their alma mater, as dozens of Port graduates come from as far as Idaho and Montana to celebrate their 50-year reunion. And what a half-century it has been! “Between 1964 and 1968, we were traumatized,” said Karen Maiorano, a reunion committee member. “We were blind-sided.” It’s arguable that the Class of ‘64 was the last of the “Happy Days”- style teenagers. They spent their adolescent Friday afternoons at Mrs. Reid’s Dancing School, where lessons in the tango and foxtrot required the girls to wear white gloves and girdles (“So we could wear stockings,” Karen recalls), and the young “gentlemen” were counseled to avoid sweaty palms. “In school, we couldn’t wear pants,” said Chery Manniello. “And when you kneeled, the hem of the skirt had to touch the floor.” But seismic cultural changes were underway, especially after Nov. 22, 1963. “We all remember where we were when President Kennedy died,” said Amy. “I was in Driver’s Ed.” PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 47

James Ryan* Home: Sea Cliff Family: wife, Elizabeth; sons Gavin, 22, Ian, 19 Occupation: Musician/ Composer What is your favorite memory of high school? Playing with the Fliptones. What is the most important thing you learned in high school? Very little. Most of my learning started in my 20s. What has changed most about you since high school? Loss of hair, much more positive outlook on life. What has changed least? My love of creating and performing music. What haven’t you done that you still want to do? Can’t think of a thing. I actually have completed my bucket list of things I wanted to do. Now I’m just enjoying the cruise. What would you say to your high school self if you met today? Smile, relax, everything happens in your favor, despite how you feel in the moment. Even the most difficult times present unseen opportunities to move toward the opening door and allow the one behind you to close. What do you think your high school self would say to you? Whoah, DUDE! WTF? *Jimmy attended Schreiber until mid junior year, when his family moved to New Jersey. But he remains life-long friends with many Schreiber classmates.

“I was in Spanish 1 when we got the news,” said Fred Falconer. “There was not a word spoken. It was total silence as everybody walked out.” Skirt lengths, white gloves as well as high school fraternities and sororities became quaint notions as these young people were buffeted by such forces as the women’s movement, drugs, civil rights and, of course, Viet Nam (“We would watch the war on TV”). 48 | PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE

“When we graduated from college in 1968, it was a completely different world,” said Amy. How did they fare? Judging from the alumni we’ve encountered, the answer is “Quite well.” To give you a sense of who they were, who they now are, and the various roads taken, in the following pages we profile six members of the Schreiber Class of ‘64.

Active hands, active minds: In this Eco-Crafts session at the Port Washington Public Library, children turn paper-towel and toilet-paper tubes into space craft.

It’s All Happening at the Kids’ Room By Christopher Gavin • Photos by Ann Parry

In a room clogged with rainbow blocks, crafts and play equipment, Akanxha Joshi stands seemingly motionless and relaxed compared to the toddlers running around her feet. She keeps a close watch on her 2-year-old daughter among what one librarian calls “organized chaos” during the Play Pals program at the Port Washington Public Library. Before the 11 a.m. indoor recess and story time, Akanxha had made her husband his lunch and saw him off to work. By 10 a.m., the mother-daughter pair was in the Children’s Room of the library, next door to the small theater room that houses Play Pals. It’s all part of a routine, Akanxha, a five-year Port Washington resident, says they complete every weekday morning to visit her “second home.” “I really appreciate this program so much,” Akanxha says. “They are doing their best. Everything they can do, they are doing it.” This mother is not alone in her praise. In just a few brief conversations with other parents, it’s clear that word of these resources travels fast, making the programs for Port’s youngest residents not only popular, but also a gathering point of the community. On any given day, 60 people or more come down to the room for each scheduled event, according to Fran Powell, a librarian and the family place coordinator, making the kids’ room the place to be, especially during summer vacation. For school-age kids, the calendar is bursting with eco-crafts, family bingo and movies, as well as book discussions and science groups. However, Fran says, the most popular programs are those for very young children, citing one mom who waited outside the room for Play Pals (playtime for those between 18 and 29 months), ready to pounce should a spot to open up. Fran, who has been at the library for 12 years, says the goal is to engage and elicit a response from infants and toddlers through Jump for Joy (a dance and movement class), Book Babies (story time for kids between zero and 18 months), and others such as Park Story Time (with the action moving to a nearby park) and even dance parties. PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 59

Making Mom proud: With a heart, stamps and booster rockets, this craft is ready for blast-off.

This Port institution is getting bigger and better than ever “We’re hoping we’re giving parents the tools to be their child’s first teacher, and so they feel empowered. They know what to do with their child. They know that they’re developing early literacy skills by reciting nursery rhymes and talking to their child,” Fran says. “[Studies] found that just casual conversation is very important for child brain development.” That’s why it doesn’t matter if a 3-month-old can’t understand the meaning of a Dr. Seuss classic. It’s more about being exposed to books and creating a nurturing environment, according to Fran. It doesn’t take an expert to see that the Children’s Room does just that. Words meant to inspire and encourage ring the ceiling’s perimeter; a circle designated for story time and play with puzzles and blocks sits in a corner; a row of computers and iPads lines the windows; and an outdoor garden is within view. However, library officials want to take it a step further, especially since program popularity has doubled the room’s usage. Nancy Curtin, library director, says that after three years of searching for an architect and listening to the input of parents and kids, the library is remodeling the children’s room for the first time in 20 years. “With all the advances in children’s learning styles, in certainly the use of technology, in learning environments that people describe,” Nancy says, “we thought it was really important that we take another look at the children’s room and make it the best learning environment we could make.”

Read us a story: In addition to story time with the librarians, parents share the joy of reading in a comfortable atmosphere.

Although the designs weren’t finalized as we went to press, Nancy says that working with Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership, they found ways to make the existing space more flexible, such as making sure parents can find a comfortable seat at the many crowded story times, as well as adding a workshop for hands-on, creative learning. The room also will be expanded a bit. The Port Washington Library Foundation is raising funds for the project, ensuring it will not be a burden for taxpayers, Nancy says. They expect the renovations will be completed in 2016. But in a society that is now accustomed to on-demand videos and limitless free information with the click of a computer mouse, some may wonder why bother going to the Children’s Room, let alone the local library? Well, it’s not difficult to understand really, according to the American Library Association (ALA). Andrew Medlar, president-elect for the ALA’s Association for Library Service to Children, says the world is currently in a “Golden Age of Library Services,” given the fact the online databases and websites at libraries allow everyone to have access to practically bottomless information.

What’s more, he cites a Pew Research Center poll showing that 70 percent of U.S. parents brought their children to the library within the last year. “It’s vital that kids have their own space in the building,” he says. “What they can do there and what those spaces can do for the kids and their family is really foster socialization and discovery. Libraries are the perfect place for that to happen.” By 11:30 a.m., Play Pals is in full swing. As the toddlers continue with the building blocks, the adults look on and chat. It is, after all, word of mouth that brings so many here. Aniko Nagyue Vig, originally from Hungary, moved from London to Port in February and says the “superb” library is like none she has known in Europe. “I’d never seen anything with story time [and] play in the same room,” she says. “This kind of stuff is new for me.”

For Akanxha Joshi though, it’s harder to pin a single label on what the library means to her and her daughter. Smiling from ear to ear, she is glowing as she explains. “It means peace of mind,” she says. “[It’s] a nice and safe place for kids so I can just relax while she is getting socialized with the other kids. She’s learning to share her toys with other kids…I love it…I don’t have words to describe more about it, but it’s really amazing.” ■

Beautiful Words In The Dark Thanks to this Port Washington group, blind people across America hear wonderful writing By Lyn Dobrin • Photo by Steve Toscano

PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 69

Choosing at Choice: Discussing their selections for a new issue of Choice Magazine Listening are (l-r) Associate Editor David Graham Page, Editor in Chief Pamela Loeser and Associate Editor Annie Schlegel-Kyrkostas. Below: The benefactor, LuEsther T. Mertz.

Macular degeneration robbed my mother of the ability to read when she was in her 70s. Fortunately, there were Talking Books available free from the Library of Congress, but she missed the fun of reading magazine articles until she started receiving Choice Magazine Listening. CML, headquartered in Port Washington, brought her high-quality magazine articles, short stories and poetry on cassettes to play on her Talking Books machine. I remember her calling me in delight after she had listened to an article about George Gershwin — I think it was from The New Yorker. For 52 years, CML has been serving people who are unable to read standard print due to blindness, or are otherwise visually impaired or physically disabled. At their offices on Channel Drive, three editors read the latest magazines and select the best writing — articles, fiction, essays and poetry. They review 100 magazines and produce 12 hours of material four times a year, all at no charge to their 20,000 subscribers. A look at the table of contents for the summer 2014 issue gives an inkling of the depth and breadth of the selections: “A Passage from Hong Kong”by Maya Jasanoff (The New York Review of Books), “Razing Arizona”by Christopher Ketcham (Harper’s), “And It Was Good”by RN Ferguson (Horticulture) and “Nature Contained”by Dominique Browning (Conde Nast Traveler). Some selections are short, such as the four-minute piece “The Ring” by Stephen King from Tin House, or long, as with the 54-minute “New Origin of the Species”by Nathaniel Rich published in The New York Times Magazine. Choice Magazine Listening was founded in 1962 by Port Washington philanthropist LuEsther Mertz, who, along with her husband, Harold, and daughter Joyce, made a fortune as a founder of Publishers Clearing House in Port Washington. She was a supporter of the arts, making major gifts to Lincoln Center, New York City Ballet, New York Shakespeare Festival, the Joyce Foundation and Joseph Papp’s Public Theater. The Central Park Conservancy, New York Botanical Garden, 70 | PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE

the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University and the Civil Liberties Union all were recipients of her largess. In her honor, scientists at the Center for Conservation Biology named a subspecies of butterfly for her — Euphydryas editha luestherae — in 1980. In Port Washington, LuEsther was a trustee of the Port Washington Public Library and a founding member of the Port Washington League of Women Voters. Her husband gave Port Washington the original Publishers Clearing House building, now the Harold E. Mertz Community Center on Main Street. Since her death in 1991, at age 85, the LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust has continued to support charities that were important to her, and her Lucerna Fund supports Choice Magazine Listening. “She wanted people who didn’t have sight to enjoy magazines,”says Pamela Loeser, the editor in chief. When CML first began in 1962, the recordings (which are taped by professionals in a studio) were sent to subscribers on 16 2/3-rpm records that could be listened to on free players available through the Library of Congress’National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. As technologies advanced, CML moved along with them from 8-rpm flexible discs in 1978, to four-track cassettes in 1990, to digital Talking Books cartridges in 2011. Now, the issues are downloadable on computers. Editor Loeser emphasizes that CML issues are free and not just for blind people. Anyone who has trouble holding a magazine, perhaps from a stroke, Parkinson or M.S., is eligible. Eligibility is simple to establish, requiring the signature of an authority that could be a doctor, nurse, therapist or professional staff of a hospital, institution or welfare agency. Details are at www.choicemagazinelistening.org, or call 516-883-8280. LuEsther Mertz developed macular degeneration late in life, and I am guessing that she was able to enjoy the service that she had provided for so many others. ■

How long has Alper’s Hardware been open? We’ve been in Port Washington since 1911. How long have you been working in this store? It’s our fourth generation, so I’ve been working here all of my life. What has changed since 1911? A lot has changed over the years. In 1911, Samuel Alper opened a jewelry store called Samuel Alper’s Jewelers. Alper’s also sold car parts at one point. We were the first store in town to sell color televisions. We try to adapt with the times. Was Alper’s Hardware always in the same location? This store was once a grocery store and then a haberdashery. We’ve been in this location since the 1930s. What has stayed the same since 1911? The clock above the front door has been in Alper’s since 1911. The shop’s always had the name Alper’s in it. What is a silly question that you get asked often? We sell a smoker called the Big Green Egg, and people often ask if it comes in a different shape or color. It only comes in green and egg shaped. What is the most commonly purchased paint color? White or off-white. Alper’s sells about 7,000 colors. What is your most commonly sold item? We sell a lot of paint, home and garden items, and a lot of light bulbs. Do you go shopping here? All the time. It’s one of the perks of owning a hardware store.

Port’s Mr. Sports By Joy Robinson • Photos by Ann Parry

Running PYA is a big job. And it takes Ron Henderson’s big heart to do it Ron Henderson vividly remembers the late 1950s, when as a young boy he played sports on Lions Field. He recalls the coaches telling him and his pals, “Line up on the baselines, hold your hats open and pick up all the rocks and glass before we can play baseball.” The coaches were volunteers, including his truck driver dad, one of the original coaches, who helped build the playing fields on Glen Lane. Picture men carrying sand from the old sand pits at the end of Salem Lane by Bar Beach to where Port’s prized nine and a half acres stand today as — quite appropriately — the Field of Dreams.

“This is my hometown,” smiles the now 67-year-old Ron, executive director of PYA (Port Youth Activities). “I’m part of the scenery. I’ve been here forever, since the day I was born in 1947.” Everybody in Port Washington knows of the popular, community-embracing organization that creates sports programs for boys and girls, ages 6 to 13, in baseball, softball, basketball, football, lacrosse, wrestling and roller-hockey. Today, PYA is backed by 71 sets of catcher’s gear, 15 lacrosse nets and tractors for cutting grass. “School districts don’t even have what we have,” Ron says proudly. PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 75

The mission of PYA is to not only teach children sports fundamentals, but most importantly, help them learn the meaning of good sportsmanship. Ron, a minor league baseball player in his day, has been a Port all-star, thanks to his dedication to PYA over the last 21 years. “Ronny is Port Washington,” says Greg Pond, friend and former 10-year PYA board member. “PYA would not be what it is today without his involvement. He is a great people person who really enjoys the kids as well as the programs that he has set forth for our community.” Another friend, Angelo Reali, is similarly effusive. “This man gives so much to our community. He has helped develop many young athletes and works tremendously hard to keep them on a positive path to the future,” says Angelo. “When we first moved to town, my son was just 8, not knowing anyone. Ron took him under his wing and introduced him to boys that he is still best friends with today. Ron Henderson is truly one of a kind. His dedication to the PYA program goes above and beyond.” Of course, Ron doesn’t do it alone; he has 30 PYA board members supporting him, as well as numerous local donors. This past summer, PYA fielded 11 baseball teams, two lacrosse teams and two softball teams.

121684

The organization and the programs haven’t always been so robust. In fact, from 1998 to the end of 2000, the PYA fields underwent a major renovation, after raising $1 million in one year. “That was when our program exploded,” Ron recalls. They had to do something to the fields due to exceptionally high enrollment. PYA made full use of all the school fields at that time while the project was going on. “Local organizations and benefactors made it happen,” says Ron. “It was a tremendous community project, people reached into their pockets to help.” In 2001, the lot on Glen Lane reopened as the Field of Dreams. “It was one of those things that everyone said we couldn’t do it, but we did.” Daily stacks of paperwork, year-round scheduling, uniform orders, grass cutting (thank you, Gabe and Oscar), annual fundraising events, constant parent communication, insurance agreements and, of course, coaching are among the many tasks that Ron and his team have undertaken. Billy Owens drives the carts around, ensuring players are safe and have what they need. A familiar face on the field, Billy has a warm personality that makes him well-liked by the kids. A product of the program himself, Billy was a lacrosse player who settled back in town years ago.

“Ronny was quite an athlete in high school,” says Bob Hirschfield, who along with his wife and partner, Rita, have run the New York Baseball Academy for the past 32 years. (Once part of New York Tech, the Baseball Academy is now with Hofstra University.) Bob and Ron have a long history together. In high school, they competed against one another in baseball and basketball. Ron reached out to Bob 22 years ago, when he sought his expertise in beginning a PYA baseball program under his leadership. “I remember Ronny as a tremendous competitor,” Bob says. “Whether he won or lost, he was always a class act — playing each game correctly and fairly to the end. He hustled, and I respected him as my opponent.” Those are the same attributes Ron works to instill in today’s kids and coaches. The result, say the Hirschfields, is a “phenomenal organization.” Ron puts the key into the door to his field office on most days as early as 7:30 a.m. He’s up at 5:30 a.m., often on the computer responding to parents, scheduling practices, and games after games. When does the day end? Typically, not until 10:30 p.m.

“My wife, Ros, loves me because I’m not home,” Ron chuckles. Since 1972, they have lived on Smull Street, which he calls “one of Port’s best-kept secrets.” They raised their daughter, Debbie, and son, Kenny, there — both grew to become professional athletes. Debbie played basketball in Portugal, Medeira Island for Clube de Amigos for three years. Today, she is living out her life-long dream working as a supervisory nurse at St. Francis Hospital. Kenny was drafted in 1999 to play pro baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates Organization where he stayed for three years. He lives in Dix Hills and is a part owner of Prospect Sports Ltd., an indoor baseball facility in Farmingdale. Currently, he’s involved in building baseball fields around Long Island and beyond. Ron supported his family by driving a school bus in Manhasset for 19 years. Then, in 1984, a couple of PYA board members encouraged him to take on the (then) part-time workload at the organization. He was known, after all, as an active member of the community — Lions Club, Sons of Italy and, so far, a 49-year member of the Port Washington Fire Department. He accepted the PYA job, driving his bus route in the morning, and heading straight to Lions Field afterwards.

Port Washington Florist As the season changes “I parked my bus in the garage there and worked on the fields,” says Ron. “The job started out slow and built momentum over time.” While now a full-time operation, PYA is still very personal. “We care about every kid in this program and want them to stay until they age out,” says Ron. “We have the best fathers in the world coaching here. Nobody can touch this operation in that regard.” By January 2015, Ron will reach retirement, but he plans to stay on another year to ensure a smooth transition for the community with whomever steps into his sneakers. The best part of the job? “The kids,” he says. “That’s what it all boils down to here. You really get to know them.” He takes great pride in walking around the fields, shaking hands, and helping the dads coach. Pausing, Ron grew emotional. “That’s the part I’ll miss the most.” ■

Port Washington Bicycles

Just asking…Ralph Intintoli

Interview by Colleen Maidhof

Do customers often ask how to teach others how to ride a bike? We hear it all the time. A lot of the time, people ask how to teach an older person how to ride a bike. When kids are younger, you put them on a bike with training wheels, so they get used to the feel of a bicycle. With a larger person who has never been on a bicycle, there is no way to adapt one that fits them with training wheels. To fix that issue, we have someone who has taught bike-riding lessons for nearly 15 years. We also have a unit called My First Rider. It’s a harness that has a handle.

When did Port Washington Bicycles open and how long have you been the owner? The shop has been open since 1966. I bought the business in 2010. Both of my friends work here and they were looking for a new owner. I thought it was a good fit. How often do you ride bikes? I ride as much as I can when I’m not working. What kind of bikes do you own? I own two road bikes, a mountain bike and a dirt bike.

Do you always wear a helmet? Yes, I do.

Where do you ride? I ride all around Sands Point. The roads are in very good condition and it’s quiet. The drivers in the area often go out of their way to yield.

What do you suggest to people who want a How many times have you fallen off a bike, but don’t know what kind to get? bike? One of the main questions is what type of bicycle More times than I can even imagine. I’ve been riding do they want to do? Bicycles are specific for falling off of my bike since I was 12 with every type of each individual category. It’s important to find a bike injury you can name. for your personal pleasure and style.

What do Port residents break most on their bikes? We get a lot of flat tires. How many people buy unicycles? To my surprise, a lot of students have plays where they have to ride a unicycle. ■

More than a bath: This Lee Najman creation expresses the style he has brought to local projects.

Blast From The Present By Joy Robinson

A local designer brings a new look to Manhasset Isle

Manhasset Isle, a section of Manorhaven on the western side of Shore Road, is anything but a cookie-cutter neighborhood. Known for its decidedly Native American street names — Nesaquake, Pequot, Secatoag, Yenicock and Sintsink — it is a colorful collection of homes and businesses in a beautiful Manhasset Bay setting. The Manhasset Bay Marina, Tom’s Point co-ops and La Motta’s Restaurant have long been part of Manhasset Isle’s diverse neighborhood of houseboats, cottages, co-ops and rentals. But as with most real estate that offers stunning water views, it was only a matter of time before updates, upgrades and new thinking made their way to the waterfront. Drive down Sintsink Drive West, and you will come across three brandnew standout structures: • Two two-family rental homes adjacent to one another • A multi-story custom home, just down the block, that is under construction. All are the work of Port Washington-based designer/mastermind Lee Najman. “When the builder came to us about Sintsink Drive West, he wanted something that would be simple, sleek and clean,” said Lee in his busy, second-floor office on Channel Drive that’s bursting with catalogs, building material and design prototypes. “Something that when the front door opens, there would be this Wow! factor.” The three new properties all back the water, with far more view than lawn. PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 85

“Not a bad way to live,” said Lee, who moved to Port with his family in the mid ‘70s, and has happily remained, while his design business works on projects in every part of the globe. Long ago a science teacher in New York City public schools, Lee used his spare time to build custom furniture in his garage. “I started with a $6 Pennysaver ad that said, ‘I design and build custom furniture,’” he recalled. The business took off from there, one project leading to another. Today, he and his staff of five design luxurious high-end residences, executive offices and specialty commercial and institutional facilities, along with restaurants. But never rental properties with a developer. Intrigued, he signed on to the Sintsink Drive West project. Some people in the area opposed the plans, worried about changing the nature of the neighborhood. Others welcomed the striking new structures. “These homes are definitely a different animal than what’s here,” said Lee. “They all have 10-foot ceilings and really stand out on the block.” Remember, the assignment was Wow! factor. The exteriors of 17 and 19 Sintsink Drive West are not-to-be missed black and white stucco and stone, with large windows, galvanized-steel railings and driveways made of concrete and pavers. Mahogany was originally planned for the exterior’s middle panel, but later substituted with a more cost-effective and durable ceramic tile that looks just like wood. “Today,” said Lee, “almost everything that’s natural has a manufactured substitute that’s remarkably good-looking and long-lasting.” Inside each of the three-story, 1,400-square-foot apartments is central air conditioning, as well as all of the kitchen and bath must-haves for today’s new construction.

Angular winding stairs climb from the basement to the second floor where Lee builds on Wow! with Big! “Big bathrooms, big storage closets, a big master bedroom,” he said. The entire second floor is a master bedroom suite large enough to accommodate the addition of an office or gym. There are large walk-in closets, his and her sinks and vanities, a shower with two entries. The four-foot-deep balconies aren’t huge, but provide plenty of space for sitting or just gazing at the bay. Downstairs, there are three bedrooms, a living room and a dining room. Despite the duplex nature of each building, there is a sense of privacy. For tenants with small children, that’s especially important, said Lee. The setting and design are so compelling that even before they were finished, all of the apartments were spoken for.

As rentals, the buildings are outfitted to keep both costs and maintenance low. Instead of wall coverings, Lee chose paint that’s easy to refresh every year or two, and flooring that would be durable and not expensive. That’s why there’s ceramic tile instead of carpet or hardwood. The look is very Najman — super modern and elegant with white, black, brown and gray as the dominant colors. And, as with most of his projects, Lee designed everything from the interior and exterior to the landscaping. On big projects, he designs the cabinets, furniture and carpet patterns. “I like having the freedom of architecture and placement,” he said. It’s a hands-on approach that harks back to Lee’s days of designing and building furniture in his Port Washington garage. “I’m very old school,” he said. “If I can’t make it or show you how to make it, then forget about it.” ■

The History of Port Washington in 5 Photos

A picture is worth 1,000 words and at least 100 years By Christopher Bain

Aviation, Manhasset Isle The first seaplane reportedly touched down in Manhasset Bay in 1912 or 1913, just 10 years after the Wright Brothers’ historic flights. In the few years before the onslaught of WWI, Manhasset Bay developed into a major aviation hub, partly because of its calm waters and protected bay, and partly because of its proximity to New York City, Roosevelt Field and Mitchel Field. Glenn Curtiss, one of the top aviation inventors in the country in 1917, developed his “M-Flying boat” and then experimented and trained pilots here in Port Washington. Other legendary aviators, such as Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Floyd Bennett and Jimmy Doolittle, tested prototypes here, flying in and out of Manhasset Bay regularly. Local financiers included Daniel and Harry Guggenheim as well as J.P. Morgan, all of whom invested in the new and promising technology of aviation. American Aeronautical Corp. purchased 16 acres of property on Manhasset Isle to build a “flying boat” factory in 1929. Pan American Airways later took over the property,

built larger hangars and terminals, and operated the busy seaplane terminus from 1933 to 1940. In 1937, Pan Am flew its first flight from Manhasset Bay to Bermuda, carrying the mail. Just two years later, in 1939, the Pan Am Clipper flew the first commercial passenger flight to France, carrying a wellheeled roster of passengers. The next year, Pan Am moved its operations to LaGuardia field. During WWII, Grumman built Hell Cat fighters and Avenger torpedo bombers for the Navy, employing 4,000 people in Port. Republic Aviation (1952) was the last manufacturer on the site, making wings for F-105 and F84-F Thunderstreak jets during the Korean War. This image, taken on March 14, 1939, shows the maiden flight of the 42-ton Yankee Clipper taking off from Manhasset Bay, packed full of city officials, newspaper executives and Pan Am executives, heading for a flight over the New York World’s Fair and New York City. The cabanas of the Sands Point Club on Plum Point are clearly visible in the lower right corner. Flights to Bermuda and Europe were just a few months away. PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE | 93

LIRR It’s impossible to imagine the changes that came to Port Washington after 1898, when the Long Island Rail Road extended the tracks from Great Neck to Port Washington. The center of town had always been near the waterfront, stretching from the area around the Town Dock to just past the Mill Pond, in what is now Port Washington North. The LIRR’s track extension started the transition of Port into a commuting town. Proximity to the train station was suddenly more important than the waterfront, which prompted real estate developers to buy up local farmland and orchards and develop it into the neighborhoods we know today. The Park section (Bar Beach Road to Highland Avenue), Port Washington Estates (Mackey Avenue, Litchfield, Murray, Reid, Vista Way, etc.) and soon after, Beacon Hill (1917), can all trace their origins to the arrival of the LIRR. So, too, can several hotels (Port once had six!), such as the Victoria Hotel, shown here on the site of today’s Starbucks. Built by Walter Mullon in 1905, at the corner of Haven Avenue and Main Street (then called Flower Hill Avenue), Port’s largest hotel boasted a bowling alley, pool tables and “Electric Illumination.” 94 | PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE

Beacon Towers, Sands Point Sands Point has long been a magnet for prominent and wealthy individuals, including such family names as Sands, Vanderbilt, Harriman, Astor, Guggenheim, Fleishman, Sousa, Belmont and scores of others. Not long after Miss Alva Smith wed William Kissam Vanderbilt, the unhappy marriage ended in divorce, after which she married his best friend, Oliver H. P. Belmont, in 1896, the son of a wealthy banker, who died in 1907. Ten years later, in 1917, she commissioned the building of Beacon Towers, designed by leading architectural firm Hunt & Hunt (shown here), arguably the most opulent home ever built in Sands Point. There were said to be upwards of 60 primary rooms and 140 in total. In 1924, she purchased the adjoining Sands Light lighthouse and property for $100,000, thus amassing the entire tip of Sands Point. A 12-foot-tall spiked wall running from west to east effectively sealed off the property from the rest of the peninsula. The huge gate and wall remain to this day, at the end of Middle Neck Road, and are all that remain of Alva Vanderbilt Belmont’s “gothic fantasy.”

In 1927, Alva sold the house to William Randolph Hearst, one of his many incredible properties around the country. The property was sold to developers in 1941, the house demolished, and the land sub-divided for seven individual waterfront properties, all just behind the massive spiked wall and ornately imposing gates.

The Mill Pond The pond that townspeople know as the Mill Pond was once an inlet, often referred to as Dodge’s Inlet, since it reached all the way back to the Dodge Homestead, still standing today at the back of the pond. The head of the inlet was dammed to form Shore Road in 1795, allowing the building of a new tidal mill, replacing the nearby Cock’s Mill that had originally been built by Adam Mott in 1781. In this hand-tinted postcard, photographed from the “Down Neck School” (later Sands Point School), you can clearly see the red-tinting of the cross-gambrel roof on the Hotel Renwick in the distance, 96 | PORT WASHINGTON MAGAZINE

now home to Diwan Restaurant. Also visible is the conveyor belt of the Titus Sandmining Company, which along with other competing companies, was pulling sand from all the land now comprising Soundview. From the multiple sand mining operations dotting the peninsula, up to 50 barges a day were pulled by tugboat to New York City, “Cow Bay Sand” being the key ingredient in the cement used for the sidewalks, tunnels and foundations of the city infrastructure. Workers came from Italy, Poland, Germany, Ireland and elsewhere to work in Port’s sandmining operations, which for more than 100 years was one of the largest in the country.

Boats to Let / The Town Dock Shellfishing, sandmining and farming made up a large part of the local economy in the late 1800s. Summer tourism started in earnest as the new century took hold, often centered on the shoreline, which raised the demand for a public dock. This early 1920s-era view shows the “Public Dock” full of cars, before it was expanded to the left. The shop in the image could be the predecessor of Louie’s or just another establishment that rented boats for pleasure fishing, and sold hard- or soft-shell clams, mussels, oysters and even lobsters. Once the Town of North Hempstead took over the dock, it was expanded to its current configuration. When this photograph was taken, Manhasset Isle had been reduced from its 40-foot hillsides of sand by the mining companies, and was soon to be developed into neighborhoods, light industry and a huge aviation complex that would shape the landscape for decades. What: Dancing at Berest Dance Center “For 38 years the Berest Dance Center has been about the students,” says founder Olga Berest. “It has contributed to the cultural mecca that Port Washington has become by bringing serious dancers from all over the Island to study at the school. But Berest is not just for professionals, it’s not unusual to now see first and second generations of Port families dancing under the same roof, just for the love and joy of movement.”
