Considering the high costs of long term care, as we grow older, many of us are likely to rely on the Medicaid program to pay for the care we need. But how does Medicaid affect your home?

For many of us, our home is our most valuable and cherished asset. It is the asset that we most want to protect and preserve for our family. Each day, we meet with clients who express the following concerns:

Unfortunately, the law regarding your home and Medicaid is complex and difficult to navigate without the advice of experienced professionals who specialize in this field. The consequences of not taking advantage of the available planning methods to protect your home can have a devastating impact on your family. We know how overwhelming it can seem when thinking about planning your estate and for your own long term care needs. Therefore, we invite you to learn more by joining us at one of our upcoming free educational seminars. Our upcoming seminar dates and locations can be found at afrlaw.com. To make a reservation you can visit afrlaw.com or call our reservation hotline, (844) 505-7254. We are also pleased to offer a free consultation so that our family of attorneys and social workers can sit down with your family and discuss how the Medicaid rules apply in your personal situation.

skin in Chinese crepes. The dish instantly became an obsession for Kissinger and the very next day, the Americans and Chinese issued a joint statement inviting Nixon to visit China in 1972. What Kissinger learned on that pivotal day in world history is a culinary lesson that continues to be revealed to novice eaters—Peking Duck, with its mind-altering succulence, has remained one of the most desired foods for centuries and truly has the power to mend decades-old divides between once-political adversaries. For a full recipe on how to cook Peking duck at home, visit www.longisland weekly.com.

Peking Duck proudly hangs in eatery windows throughout Flushing and Chinatown, ready for the traditional preparation.

n the centuries-old lore of Chinese food traditions, there is one dish that soars above all others. Crisp, amber-hued and unctuously fatty, Peking Duck is a legendary Chinese dish and easily tops last-meal lists the world over. China has roasted duck since the Southern and Northern dynasties in the 400s, and the official Peking Duck dish was fully developed later in the Ming Dynasty, when it was one of the main dishes on imperial court menus. In the United States, National Peking Duck Day lands on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Throughout Flushing, Queens and Manhattan’s Chinatown, ducks at various stages of roasting are seen hanging in eatery windows, gently luring in foot traffic with shiny skin and deeply nuanced aromatics. The flavor is characterized by rich, oily meat paired with crisp, spiced skin. It is often eaten with scallion, cucumber and a bean sauce rolled in a Chinese pancake. Those flavors might have also had a hand in diplomacy. Prior to President Richard Nixon’s visit to the People’s Republic of China in 1972, the two countries shared a foul relationship. According to legend, it was Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s love of Peking Duck that jump-started the road to a detente. As the story goes, Kissinger met Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in the Great Hall of People during a secret visit to China in July of 1971. After a morning of frustrating, inconclusive talks, the delegation was served Peking Duck for lunch. Enlai, in a show of hospitality, schooled Kissinger on how to properly roll the slices of meat and

Where Jimi Hendrix And The Isley Brothers Meet

The Isley Brothers: Ron (left) and Ernie Isley

till going strong six decades on, The Isley Brothers continue to record and play live despite the fact that the core group has been reduced to 75-year-old frontman Ron Isley and his 64-year-old guitar-playing, younger sibling Ernie. That said, the duo enters 2017 on the road and waiting for a currently upcoming Carlos Santanaproduced project set to drop sometime in the spring. For the younger Isley, the experience was very special. “It was great. Carlos Santana is a fan of our music and we’re fans of his. He was being played in all the dormitories when I was in college, so [it was great] to have a chance to go in the studio and watch him play,” Isley explained. “He’s playing and I’m grinning, and then when I started playing, he’s grinning. So that was something that came full circle on every level.” And while Ernie Isley’s first time playing in an official recording capacity as a member of The Isley Brothers came as a teenager when he played bass on the 1969 smash “It’s Your Thing,” it was his fiery six-string execution on seminal songs like “That Lady” and “Fight the Power (Part 1 &

2),” which he co-wrote, that not only made music fans take notice, but showed off the influence of ex-Isley Brothers hired hand and family friend Jimi Hendrix. The following are Ernie Isley’s favorite axe slingers.

1.

José Feliciano “When I heard José Feliciano’s ‘Light My Fire,’ that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The tone of his guitar and [the fact that] he did a cover version of a Doors song and you could hear the sensuality, chord structure and these wonderful lyrics all made me want to play guitar.”

2.

Jimi Hendrix “You have a person in your home like this left-handed guitar player, and eventually it goes into the stratosphere. I didn’t have to hear the Are You Experienced? album to know he could play. By that time, I was already experienced.”

3.

Carlos Santana “Carlos is a very passionate player, and you can feel how caliente he is in terms of his style along with the percussion. For quite a while after Woodstock, the two guitar players were Hendrix and Santana.”

Craig M. Linder, MD

4.

Pat Metheny “[Pat] could very easily have a recording studio on one of the rings of Saturn with the way he gets his tone and musical expression. It’s very extraterrestrial and beautiful.” The Isley Brothers will be appearing on Jan. 14 at B.B. King Blues Club and Grill, 237 West 42nd St. NYC. For more information, visit www.bbkingblues. com or call 212-997-4144. They will also be appearing on Jan. 15 at NYCB Theatre @ Westbury, 960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury. Best Team Uniforms: NBA Edition BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

O

DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

ne of the most significant revenue streams for NBA teams is the lucrative profits that come from fans plunking down money for team jerseys. Last year, we took a look at some of the worst offenders National Basketball Association owners had to offer. In the spirit of the new year, we offer up some of the best unis in our humble opinion, in no particular order. Atlanta Hawks (Road, 1982-1992) The former Buffalo Bisons may not have won a title in 57 years, but for most of Hall of Fame small forward Dominque Wilkens’ (left) career of being a human highlight film, the Hawks styled on the court. While Torch Red remains a primary color, gold and white gave way to Volt Green and Georgia Granite Gray. Seattle Supersonics (Road, 1985-1995) Currently toiling away as the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Sonics have a rich history and a 1979 championship under their belts. Couple it with this stellar collision of green, gold and white that was sported by the likes of Shawn Kemp, Nate McMillan (right), Spencer Haywood, Gary Payton, Lenny Wilkens and Kevin Durant.

Detroit Pistons (Road, 1995-2001) True Pistons fans will always look back fondly on the late 1980s Bad Boys era, but for the 1990s, the arrival of small forward Grant Hill (above) also coincided with a change from traditional red and blue to teal, burgundy, gold and black road unis complete with a chess piece logo that proved to be gaudy and great.

For the better part of two decades, the Nets embraced the patriotic red, white and blue combination of the American Basketball Association, an affectation that not only followed them from their nomadic wanderings from Long Island to New Jersey, but when the ABA and NBA finally merged in 1976.

Portland Trail Blazers (Home, 1985-1991) Four decades after being champions in 1977, the Blazers’ stellar combination of red, black, silver and white and the franchise’s classic pinwheel logo always made for one of the league’s classier jerseys. Lowercase bubble lettering on these particular unis give them that much more of a vintage vibe.
