The pros and cons of mainline rail expansion BY FRANK RIZZO

FriZZo@antonmediagroup.com

Thanks to a media blitz by the state, all those who have a stake in the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Expansion Project can tell you the benefits of putting in a third track on the 9.8-mile main line between Floral Park and Hicksville. Two other major components of the MTA’s $2 billion capital plan include adding parking garages for an additional 2,490 spaces and eliminating seven grade crossings through the corridor, which serves 40 percent of the railroad’s daily ridership. The Executive Summary from the

2,500-page Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) lists the good things that will come from project approval, including improved service and reduced delays, a reduction in pollution and noise from eliminating the grade crossings, major station upgrades and improving “track infrastructure such as switches, signals, and power.” Unlike a similar plan 10 years ago, the current one does not call for the state to acquire residential homes. The track will be built on the LIRR’s right of way. LIRR Executive Vice President Elisa

The American Cancer Society is proud to announce that 28 community and school led Relay For Life events and six college campus events are planned throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties in 2017. Residents can join together with the American Cancer Society to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer by participating, volunteering, fundraising or sponsoring Relay For Life.

Volunteers Needed

Each community will be kicking off their planning season, and all are welcome to attend. Volunteers are needed to help plan, fundraise, set up, promote, secure sponsors, organize a cancer survivor reception, and plan opening ceremonies, event logistics, security and entertainment. “Whether you can offer a few hours or can help throughout the spring, the American Cancer Society has a role for you to become involved in this community movement,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, communications manager for the American Cancer Society.

Participating Communities

From May 6 through June 17, more than two dozen communities and schools will be celebrating and honoring cancer patients in treatment and beyond, remembering those lost to cancer, and fighting back against cancer, including: May 6 Relay For Life of Our Lady of Mercy Academy www.relayforlife.org/olmany May 12 Relay For Life of Bellmore-Merrick CHSD www.relayforlife.orgbellmoremerrickny Relay For Life of Locust Valley H.S. www.relayforlife.org/locustschoolny

Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.” Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.
