Do You Hear What I Do?: Music Gift Guide BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

The Doors - The Singles Box; The Doors [50th Anniversary Deluxe]; Strange Days [50th Anniversary Deluxe] (Rhino/Elektra) This year represents the band’s 50th anniversary and is being commemorated by this collection of every Doors single and B-side (which comes as either a double-CD or as 20 45s) along with double-CD 50th Anniversary Deluxe editions of the first two albums that feature mono and stereo mixes of both releases.

ell-packaged and well-annotated music collections always make far more of an impact in the appreciation and ingesting of music than downloads or streaming ever will. While these qualify as last-minute missives, given the quality of the music and packaging of these sets, I hardly think anyone is going to give you a hard time for hitting them with one of these gems after Hanukkah/Christmas. Various Artists - Jesus Rocked the Jukebox: Small Group Black Gospel (19511965) (Craft Recordings) This double-CD set perfectly represents the bridge between the sacred and sanctified via these 40 cuts featuring nuggets by the Staple Singers, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Swan Silvertones, The Soul Stirrers and The Pilgrim Travelers, whose most famous members, Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls respectively, are represented here. Little Richard - Here’s Little Richard (Specialty) Having lost Chuck Berry this past year, Little Richard (along with Jerry Lee Lewis) remains one of the last standing cornerstones of early rock and roll. While the mercurial man born Richard Penniman just celebrated his 85th birthday, this deluxe reissue of his 1957 debut not only contains some of his biggest hits (“Tutti Frutti,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Rip It Up”), but a bonus disc of alternate takes, demos and the unbridled element of raucous passion and danger that thrilled teenagers and worried parents. Isaac Hayes - The Spirit of Memphis 1962-1976 (Craft Recordings/Stax) Between his latter-day incarnation as South Park’s Chef and his larger-than-life persona as the Black Moses in the early 1970s, Isaac Hayes’ talents as a supremely gifted composer/arranger/interpreter often goes overlooked. This outstanding collection examines all facets of his career in a 14-yeartime span that spans 4-CDs and one seven-inch vinyl 45 (his first commercially released single) accompanied by a stellar 60-page hardcover book that includes a stellar essay by author Robert Gordon ((It Came From Memphis) and new interviews with Stax luminaries Deanie Parker, Jim Stewart and Sam Moore (Sam & Dave).

John Lee Hooker - King of the Boogie (Craft Recordings) The Mississippian would have celebrated his centennial this year and befitting the musical legacy he left behind, this 5-CD career-spanning retrospective delves deep into his canon. It not only features iconic hits like “Boogie Chillen,” “Boom Boom” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” but also includes rarities, live recordings and several previously unreleased tracks. There is also a 56-page book featuring a wide selection of photos, taken throughout the musician’s life, plus new liner notes by writer and historian Jas Obrecht and longtime manager and friend, Mike Kappus.

Bob Dylan - Trouble No More-The Bootleg Series Vol. 13/1979-1981 (Columbia) This look at Dylan’s Christian period is covered in this set that’s available in an 8-CD/1DVD or 4-LP/1-DVD format. In addition to shining the spotlight on the albums Slow Train Coming, Saved and Shot of Love, this collection features four discs of live performances, two CDS of unreleased material, a hard-cover book and the feature-length movie, Trouble No More: A Musical Film. Elvis Presley - A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings (RCA) The definitive collection of Presley’s stint at Sun Records encompasses three CDs and includes every known master and outtake, live performance, radio recording, the King’s self-financed first acetates and a previously unreleased recording. There is also a 120-page book brimming with rare photos of Elvis’ early years.

The Replacements - For Sale: Live at Maxwell’s 1986 (Rhino/Warner Brothers) This 2-CD set captures one of the last live performances by the original lineup of this storied Minneapolis quartet. The 29 songs include staples (“Kiss Me On the Bus,” “Bastards of Young,” “I Will Dare”) and covers (“Black Diamond,” “Fox On the Run,” “Nowhere Man”) and liner notes by band biographer Bob Mehr (Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements). David Bowie - A New Career In a New Town (1977-1982) (Parlophone) The third installation in Rhino’s chronological series is a 13-LP/11-CD set highlighting all the material released by the Thin White Duke during this time period including all four studio albums, his 1978 live album Stage, the newly compiled HEROES EP, the exclusive new compilation of single versions, non-album singles and B-sides dubbed Re:Call 3 and a 128-page, hardback book. Van Morrison - The Authorized Bang Collection (Sony) This 3-CD set highlights Van the Man’s initial postTheme songs overseen by legendary record producer/ songwriter Bert Berns. Here, you’ll find the Original Masters, Bang Sessions & Rarities and the Contractual Obligation Sessions, featuring a boatload of material.

5 Questions To Ask Yourself For An Enjoyable Holiday Season

ith another holiday season upon us, let’s take the opportunity to reflect on the kind of significance they hold for us. When we become intentional about what the true meaning of this time is, we can be more intentional about how we create our participation in the holidays. Ask yourself these five questions and take the time to mindfully step into a more exciting and purposeful experience of the festivities.

LIFE EVOLUTIONS Melody Pourmoradi Melody Pourmoradi is a women’s life and wellness coach at Life Evolutions Coaching. Check out www.lifeevolutionscoaching.com to learn more.

What Needs To Go?

How Do I Want To Feel?

We all subconsciously hold onto things that no longer serve us. Use this time as a cleansing to release those things you no longer choose to hold space for in your life. This could apply to physical items, relationships and even thoughts that you are ready to let go of. There’s such a sense of freedom that comes from shedding the old and welcoming fresh new ways of living. What can you choose to release?

Throughout the holidays, we so often get taken down by tiny ideas and details that hold little meaning. Think about how it is that you want to feel at this time in the season and focus your energy on that. When you shift your attention to your intention, you are better able to create a way to dwell in that feeling on a moment to moment basis. How would you love to feel during the holidays?

How Can I Enjoy This Moment? One of the biggest things that robs us of our joy during the holidays is wishing that we could change the past or thinking ahead into the future. We rarely take the time to enjoy the present moment. Take notice of all the times that you are doing one thing but your mind is completely somewhere else. Bring your attention back to the now. The present moment is all we have and once it’s gone it cannot be reclaimed. How can you step into the now?

How Can I Choose Peace? The holidays often serve as a prompt to stir up serious emotion for us. Unfortunately this is a time when family quarrels and disagreements are at an all time high. Know that at any given moment peace is just a thought away. We can choose to blame others for our internal

condition or we can take responsibility for changing our internal state and shifting our perceptions. It feels good to look at things from a viewpoint that is more empowering to us. How can you choose to dwell in a state of peace?

How Can I Be Generous? We often get so hyper-focused on the laundry list of things that we forget one of the most crucial pieces of getting into the holiday spirit—giving. Take this time to step outside of your schedule, your obligations and your own stress and find a way to help another person. It feels good to give and there is no better way to expand yourself and those around you than finding a way to express your own generosity and putting some positive vibes out there in a world that needs it so badly. How can you express your generosity this holiday season? Sending my warmest wishes for a safe, and meaningful holiday season for all.

Practical Fit Tips For The Holiday Season

T

he holidays don’t have to be synonymous with weight gain and overindulging. Instead of resorting back to old habits, why not get a head start on the New Year? By making a few small changes to your nutrition and lifestyle routine, you can stay in control and positive this holiday season. Here are some of my favorite practical fit tips for December:

Focus On Weight Maintenance: Holiday parties and massive amounts of food can make weight loss seem very intimidating during the holiday season. You may start restricting yourself to “save” calories for an event, but ultimately give in to overeating at the end of the day. Once the New Year rolls around, you have to do some “damage control” on the 10 pounds that mysteriously snuck up on you. My personal tip to clients during the holiday season is to focus on weight maintenance. Instead of stressing over losing weight, try your best to maintain where you are and not gain any additional weight during

CHOOSING HEALTH Stefani Pappas

this month. Once the new year hits, you can get right back on track with your weight loss journey.

Avoid Skipping Meals This goes hand-in-hand with the weight maintenance concept. Skipping meals does not equal weight loss! If anything, starving yourself and going for a long period of time without food actually slows the metabolism down and can lead to weight gain. Feed your metabolism with wholesome, fresh, natural foods throughout the day. Listen to your body, and eat to nourish.

Incorporate More Fiber High-fiber foods include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; these

items tend to be low in calories, but high in vitamins and minerals. Dietary fiber helps normalize bowel movements and aids regularity. Even more importantly, fiber actually helps regulate blood sugar levels by preventing insulin spikes. Fiber also moves fat through your digestive system at an efficient rate so that less of it can be absorbed. The average healthy adult should be consuming 25 (females) to 38 (males) grams of fiber daily.

Eat Your Calories, Don’t Drink Them Do you ever notice that alcohol doesn’t typically carry a nutrition facts label? You may be drinking away a bottle of wine without realizing how many calories even a glass is worth. If you’re trying to manage your weight, try to at least cut back on the size of your drink. Start with half a glass of wine and pace yourself throughout the night. Other items like soda, juice, and sugary beverages are just not worth the weight gain. Opt for seltzer, fruit-infused water, and unsweetened iced teas. There are a variety of new

sparkling water products with unique flavor combinations that can satisfy your taste buds.

Stay Active At Least three times/Week During the holiday season, we are typically taking in more calories than usual. Between holiday parties and coworkers bringing in festive treats, it can be easy for sugar and calories to add up. Try to offset your caloric intake by staying physically active at least 3x/week. Although any physical activity is better than nothing, setting a routine to exercise at least 3x/week can lead to a significant calorie burn and muscle gain.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season. Stefani Pappas, MS, RDN, CDN, CPT, is a Clinical Dietitian Nutritionist at St. Francis Hospital. She also provides private and group nutrition counseling at her office in Great Neck, NY. winkling lights and sparkling snow are made that much more beautiful when Santa puts shiny jewelry under the tree. At John Hardy, artisans know a thing or two about exquisite pieces, combining the duality of tradition and innovation, mastery and modernity and the universal and the personal. John Hardy’s reversible classic chain customizable bracelets are hand-woven in Bali, using ancient chain weaving techniques, finished with raw stones (there are 21 colors to choose from). Inlaid for their healing, energizing, grounding,

and enlightening properties, rare gems amplify your presence, connecting you at once to the power of creative expression and the power of your truth. The styles range in price between $995 to $4,595, depending on the particular stones chosen. They are available in all silver or silver and gold, creating two completely different looks that can be worn. The brand just launched their first collection for FW17 by Creative Director, Hollie Bonneville Barden, whose inaugural collection features

a redesigned Naga motif (the brand’s legendary dragon icon). The strong, powerful silhouette is represented across key pieces including sculptural chokers, artistic coils and unexpected rings. The collection also features an expansion of the chevron-style Modern Chain collection, with highlight pieces including art deco-inspired drop earrings and cocktail rings and gold-capped wide cuffs. Barden, who took the helm in 2016, is the first woman to embody the role for John Hardy.

“My exploration of Naga was, in a way, a unique journey of discovering Bali,” she said of her design process. “Through my creative process, I uncovered that, beyond the Naga myth, Balinese folklore depicts the Naga as an embodiment of different natural spirits—the earth, the ocean and the sky, representing the elements of natural phenomena and its raw beauty. To me, this concept of duality is universal.”

The collection prominently showcases stones such as golden sheen sapphire, silver sheen obsidian, and bi-color amethyst as the ultimate symbols of nature’s elemental strength, transmitted to the wearer. “I selected the stones not just for their suggestion of power, drama, the fascination of light and color—but the power of creation they represent. I wanted to show nature’s strength through creation,” said

Barden. “Working closely with the brand’s artisans helped me grasp a greater understanding of the spirit of Naga in artwork and carved expression. I’ve found that carving is one of the strongest and most important ties between myself and the artisan community.” The collection is available worldwide at select retailers and at www. JohnHardy.com. These pieces of jewelry are so unique and glamorous that even if they were a last minute gift idea, no one will ever know.

Available in either a 32-Blu-ray or 43-DVD set. The Mod Squad; The Complete Series (Visual Entertainment, Inc.) One of Aaron Spelling’s first forays into television production featured three young undercover cops whose counterculture looks allowed them to blend in and fight crime. In addition to featuring a prominent African-American character in a lead role, the 124 episodes that make up this 20-DVD set weave social commentary into their storylines.

Rules For Regifting BY CHRISTY HINKO

Y

cHinKo@antonmediagroup.com

es, it is being said. There are rules for regifting and whether you admit it or not, it is extremely resourceful to do so. But there are tactful ways to do it and not so tactful ways too. Regifting, giving a gift that you received to another person, has been happening for centuries, but there are some simple etiquette rules that should be followed.

Do not feel bad about regifting. There is a slight work around for this though. If you are regifting something seriously expensive, you might want to tell the giftee so they do not feel obligated to gift you back with something equally expensive.

Host A Regifting Party To Regift

Not To Regift

The best gifts for regifting are gifts that you really believe are best suited for a specific person. There are times when the person to whom you are regifting will get enjoyment out of something that doesn’t suit your taste. Don’t regift just to get rid of the gift. Just because you don’t want the gift doesn’t mean the person you are giving it to does either. Personalize the new and unopened regift. Rewrap it, and definitely change the gift card that it originally came with.

Use common sense. Never regift a Christmas candle in the middle of the summer. Do not give anything monogrammed to your neighbor, unless, by odd chance, they have the same initials as you do. Do not regift handmade items or free promotional items like the tote bag from the perfume counter. Make sure your giftee is not related to the person who originally gave the gift to you. Do not discuss that your gift is recycled. It might be true, but you should not tell someone it is a regift.

An idea mentioned on www. regiftable.com suggests hosting a sort of White Elephant Party, when people gather together for the purpose of exchanging essentially impractical items. Just be sure that the original gift giver will not be in attendance.

Here’s how it goes: Each guest brings one wrapped regift. All guests draw a number. The regifter with the lowest number chooses a wrapped regift and opens it for everyone to see. The person with the next lowest

number can either take the opened regift or select a “new” wrapped regift. If they choose a “new” regift, they must open it for all to see. Each subsequent person is allowed to either unwrap a “new” regift or take any of the regifts already opened. If a regift is taken from someone, that person gets to immediately choose another “new” gift to open or they can get revenge by stealing someone else’s gift. When all the gifts have been opened, the person with the lowest number gets to trade with anyone or keep the regularly rejected regift they ended up with. So, maybe it is the gift that keeps on giving or it’s something you have a duplicate of—either way, make sure to thank the person who gave it to you with sincerity. If you cannot bring yourself to regift, some choose to donate their unwanted gifts to charity or sell them in an online auction.
