FLOWER HILL WOMEN’S CLUB A festive gathering for all ages.

Maureen Smith reads the blessing.

Good friends enjoy shopping.

The Season Of Giving By ELIZABETH JOHNSON

Current and past presidents of Flower Hill Women’s Club

EJOHNSON@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

G

reeted by two nutcrackers, the Flower Hill Women’s Club celebrated their 69th annual Christmas Luncheon on Nov. 30. This traditional holiday event was held at the Port Washington Yacht Club and is one of the season’s favorite parties due to the exceptional leadership of president Deanna D’Urso, Karen Barnes, Margie Suga, Nancy Paganucci and Diane Turner. The Flower Hill Women’s Club is a philanthropic organization supporting children’s charities. A holiday favorite, the luncheon was a sell out, and ladies young and old enjoyed shopping for the holidays and a dazzling display of beautifully wrapped raffle prizes. The enchanting centerpieces of a seasonal lantern with glowing candle gave the table a Victorian setting

similar to a Thomas Kincaid painting. The recipient of the beautiful centerpiece was the lucky guest who had a dot under their bread dish. Maureen Smith read the prayer, giving women insight into why it is so important to take time for friends and family and not lose sight of the wonder of the season. The powerful prayer made guests pause and applaud, as the honesty of the words were taken to heart. The Women’s Club of Flower Hill is one of the only clubs which has consistently maintained this glorious tradition even during trying economic times. Whether neighbor, family or friend, the ladies enjoyed the vendors who had international flavors, food, jewelry, scents, fashion and just about anything you would want to give or receive as a present. Next year will mark the 70th anniversary of the fabled luncheon, adding another layer to the celebration. Together for a special lunch.

Next year marks the 70th anniversary.

he Port Washington Chamber of Commerce has announced that the Port Washington parking district will suspend parking fees along Main Street and Port Washington Boulevard from Saturday, Dec. 9, through Boxing Day on Tuesday, Dec. 26. Attractive new holiday bags will be covering the meters throughout the holiday shopping season. Chamber co-president Mitch Schwartz thanked Town Councilwoman Dina DeGiorgio, Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the entire Town Board for allowing this holiday tradition to continue. Shoppers will be allowed to park at the meters for two hours for free on Main Street and Port Washington Boulevard and along commercial side streets Carlton Avenue, South Maryland Avenue and Irma Avenue. To discourage commuters from using the street parking spaces meant for shoppers, cars that exceed the two hour limit are subject to ticketing. Parking meters will remain in effect in the town parking lots. Schwartz said, “This will give Port residents an added incentive to shop locally throughout the holiday season.” There are so many other advantages of doing your holiday shopping right here in Port Washington, including receiving friendly, personal service and saving time, gas and frustration by not having to travel to malls and look for a parking space in the overcrowded mall parking lots. Of course, it is always safer to stay close to home when bad weather strikes. Most importantly, by shopping locally we are supporting the merchants that support our town all year. Remember, your local merchants care about you and support our community. Did you know that for every $100 spent in locally owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, donations and other expenditures? If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. If you spend it online, nothing comes home. For a copy of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce business directory, Try Port First, and suggestions on where to find that special gift locally, call the chamber office at 516-883-6566 or log onto www.pwguide.com.

MEN’S GIFTS

Solving The Guy Gift Conundrum 2

O

ne of the frequent—not entirely untrue—knocks on men is that they have minimal patience for shopping. And by that same token, they can be just as difficult to shop for. But just because men often have no idea what they want, doesn’t mean they won’t be thrilled when someone gets it for them. Presents can range from the practical to the festive, but there’s no shortage of gift options for men this holiday season.

Martini/Shot Glasses: House parties are a blast, especially around the holidays, but while paper cups can go a long way when beer is the specialty of the evening, they won’t provide much mileage for cocktails. A nice set of martini glasses or a collection of

4 shot glasses is a surefire way to keep a guy prepared to entertain. Pajamas: Dress shirts and ties are such a necessity that a lot of guys have more than they know what to do with. Comfort clothing and sleepwear, on the other hand, is sometimes overlooked, so a set of pajama pants and/or slippers can be a pleasant surprise. Socks: It’s a secret that not everyone knows, but colorful and slightly quirky

socks have been popular with men lately, and despite some claims to the contrary, remain so. Obviously, how outlandish the sock is should depend on the guy it’s for, but something with solid colors and animals (birds, fly fish, etc.) strikes a fair balance between low key and interesting. Office Supplies: No one wants to be reminded of work, but office supplies are helpful for any young professional.

A nicely packaged assortment of pens, for example, could do the trick—sometimes presentation is everything. Travel Gear: No reason to overthink this one; wallet and passport holders, as well as overnight bags, make it that much easier to book that trip in the new year, be it for business or pleasure. All of these gifts are available at the Sands Point Shop, located at 15 Main St., Port Washington.

GIFT GUIDE

Gifting Made Easy By MARA BOLLETTIERI

W

PORTWASHINGTON@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

ith the joy and excitement of the holidays comes a buzz of panic over the ultimate anxiety-provoking question: What do I buy for everyone this year? Luckily, the local shops in Port Washington give members of the community a plethora of options to choose from for their gift-giving needs. You can find gifts that you can’t get at any department store or mall, making it all the more special for those you love. Here are a few gift ideas that you can find right here in town.

Initial Stop

282-B Main St., 516-304-5800, www.initialstop.com This shop features a selection of towels, blankets, pillows, baby items and more that can be monogrammed and personalized however you’d like. A major must-have is a personalized blanket. This would be an ideal gift to give, such as a family friend, or you can even get one for your own family. You can get it personalized with the last name written across it. There are eight different styles of blankets to choose from in numerous colors. Prices range from $30-$150, depending on the style of blanket you choose. The cashmere blanket is amongst the best-sellers.

The Dolphin Bookshop

299 Main St., 516-767-2650, www.thedolphinbookshop.com This bookshop also sells all sorts of items perfect for gift-giving, such as mind and body products, lotions for men and women, oils and more. Especially popular at the store are the book gift baskets. You can either choose one that is premade, or speak with the shop about having one personally made. The baskets come with books, toys, stuffed animals and/ or other items of your choosing. The baskets are usually themed; for instance, if you pick a children’s book on polar bears, there will be a polar bear stuffed animal inside along with toys that are polar bear-themed. You can even get bookends in the baskets, or have the base of your basket be a little red wagon. This gift idea is especially popular for children, but can work for adults as well. For instance, for adults you can fill the basket with teacups, tea and books. Prices for these baskets start at $70 and go up from there. Another gift idea for adults is the Pinch Me Therapy Dough. A good way to reduce stress, you can pull, twist and play with this dough. It comes in different and relaxing scents, such as lavender and ocean. The small one costs $15.95, perfect for a stocking-stuffer and $29.95 for the larger-sized dough. Every Pinch Me purchase helps pay for a soldier’s stress management training with www. BootStrapUSA.com. The shop also offers complimentary wrapping and concierge service.

Painting with Flowers

298 Main St., 516-883-4164 A big seller all year round is the Rosy Rings spicy apple candle, a botanical beeswax candle which gives off a delicious scent of apple pie fresh from the oven. Prices range from $45-$92, depending on what size of candle you purchase. Another scrumptious-smelling gift are the FinchBerry soaps from FinchBerry Soapery. These soaps are gluten-free, vegan and produced without any harsh chemical preservatives. Not only are they unique in this way, but the unusual appearance of the soaps are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. You can purchase these for $10 a pop, or you can mix and match a box of four of your choosing for $36.

Wit & Whim

6 Carlton Ave., 516-944-9200, www.wit-and-whim.com This shop features unique works of art, pieces of jewelry and other items made by local residents that you can’t get anywhere else. The store is currently carrying local artist Maria Salazar’s pottery. The “Shine Within” piece is perfect to put a candle inside, which will illuminate the piece, and is $280. If you want something on the lower price range by this artist, the decorative trinket trays cost around $20. The one-of-a-kind, gift-giving options don’t stop there; the store also carries antique necklaces with original tin photos dating back to the 1800s, created by Jacquelyn Conte, an employee of the store, which cost about $85. If you need a decorative greeting card this holiday season to go with your gifts, the store has local artist Carole Weitz’s hand-painted water color cards for $12.50 each, sold exclusively at the shop.

Impulse Boutique

29 Main St., 516-439-5055, www.impulseboutiques.com This boutique has the essentials for the fashionable woman in your life, featuring jewelry, accessories and fashionable clothing. Ponchos and capes of all different colors and styles are your best bet for a cozy holiday gift. Prices for ponchos and capes range from $98-$135, depending on the style. Accessorize it with a winter hat, which is one of the store’s more popular items. The hat comes with a pom-pom on top, which is removable for washing. The hat is fleece lined inside for extra comfort and warmth, comes in many different colors and costs a reasonable $35.

every signature cocktail has to be overtly about the holidays—certain drinks just fit the winter season like a glove. Finn MacCool’s Espresso Martini, made with Espresso, vanilla vodka, Kahlua and Bailey’s, is proof positive of that fact. So sweet that the vodka almost passes unnoticed, it’s not hard to see why this drink is one of Finn MacCool’s most popular—it’s dangerously

BOOKS

The Gift Of Literary Treasure By PORT WASHINGTON NEWS STAFF

F

PORTWASHINGTON@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

ew names are as synonymous with the North Shore as Jay Gatsby—and this holiday, fans of literature’s symbol of the Gilded Age can own a piece of Long Island history. For its first U.S. publication, Editions des Saints Pères (SP Books) has reproduced the original 302-page autographed manuscript of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby for a limited number of collectors. Throughout handwritten pages, the novel’s characters are sketched, revised and born. The manuscript, donated to Princeton University Library in 1950 by Fitzgerald’s daughter, Scottie, is full of surprises. Entire scenes are extended. Passages are crossed out while others are added with a caret. Lots of details change. The main difference is that Jay Gatsby’s character appears more mysterious: the story of his rise to wealth isn’t revealed until the very end of the manuscript. Hand-numbered from 1 to 1,800, each book is presented in a 14x10 inch slipcase, bound and sewn using the finest materials. The slipcase is handmade in France and both slipcase and cover are iron gilded. The pages are printed using vegetal ink on environmentally friendly paper. SP Book’s ultimate mission is to offer to Fitzgerald enthusiasts an object that most closely resembles that which the manuscript once was, during the 1920s, as Fitzgerald was adding his final touches. In order to make this ambition a reality, SP Books collaborated with the Princeton University Library and began working on their high-definition scans of each page. With their customary skill, and with the help of their state-of-the art technology, SP Books’ team worked meticulously to restore the original appearance of the handwritten text: treating each page, word by word and reconstructing the nuances of Fitzgerald’s pencil marks. To purchase this and other literary collectibles, go to www.spbooks.com

ive the gift of entertainment for the holiday season and enjoy One Night Only. It was so much fun last year, the Landmark on Main decided to do it again on Jan. 6. Once again it’s an all-new event exclusively for the Jeanne Riminsky Theater. The format will be familiar, but there is a whole new crop of talented performers—Broadway’s finest vocalists recreating signature musical moments from their long-running roles in the Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals you know and love. The performers also share backstage stories and take questions from the audience. “I am so excited to continue to bring some of Broadway’s finest performers to create a special intimate experience which allows them to connect with the audience in such a unique and personal way,” said producer and resident Broadway maven Stephen Deangelis. The cast is a veritable encyclopedia of credits that include Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional and national touring productions. For instance Rona Figueroa who performed in Miss Saigon and Les Miserables. She played both Fantine and Eponine. Figueroa was also cast in Nine, Lennon, The King and I, Rent, The Boys From Syracuse, Jesus Christ Superstar and We Will Rock You. Jenn Gambatese performed in School of Rock, Disney’s Tarzan and All Shook Up—for which she received an Outer Critics Circle nomination. She also stared in Hairspray, A Year with Frog and Toad, Footloose, Wicked, The Sound of Music and Carousel. Lisa Howard starred in It Shoulda Been You and won the 2015 Drama Desk Award and was a Drama League Awards nominee. Howard performed in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, 9 to 5 The Musical, South Pacific and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee for which she received a Drama Desk Award. This spring, she will star on Broadway as Tammy in the new Jimmy Buffet musical Escape to Margaritaville. Mykal Kilgore starred in Jesus Christ Superstar, Dear Evan Hansen, Motown The Musical, Hair, The Book of Mormon and Marley. He has toured the U.S. as well as Europe/Asia/Australia with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox. His YouTube video of PMJ’s version of “My Heart Will Go On” has garnered almost six million views. More extensive bios are available on www.landmarkonmainstreet.org/event.cfm?id=392. Add to this list the incomparable Wendy Bobbit Cavitt who played in such Broadway hits as Hamilton, Come From Away, Mamma Mia!, The Scarlet Pimpernel, A Year with Frog and Toad, The Most Happy Fella and A Tale of Two Cities as musical director and accompanist on the piano, and ticket holders have the best of Broadway right in Port Washington. Tickets for Broadway on Main Street are on sale through Landmark’s Box Office at 516-767-6444 and online at www.landmarkonmainstreet.org. Premium tickets are $50 (Friends $45), Select tickets are $45 (Friends $40), Standard tickets are $40 (Friends $35). To enjoy a bonus VIP post-show cast party to mingle, munch, sip and take selfies with the cast, $50 will added to any ticket purchased. The VIP post-party is limited to 30 people. HOLIDAY HEALTH

FIRST ANNUAL COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS EVENT

Tips For Feasting

Sunday, December 17th 4:00 pm till 6:00 pm

BY NADYA SWEDAN

oyous news: the Holiday Season is here! Is your emotional reaction happy, excited, sad, anxious or stressed? What about your schedule? Getting overbooked already? How can you possibly squeeze in time for mood improving, weight managing, and health improving fitness? And what about time for sleep? More joyous news: you can stay fit through the holidays without further stressing your mind or your schedule. In fact, fitness activities temper emotions and clear the mind, allowing you to stay more efficient. Feeling fit and mentally clear will make every holiday more manageable. Here’s how: First, rethink what exercise is. The most beneficial exercise does not require changing clothes, breaking a sweat, joining a gym or hiring a trainer. The best exercise is walking. All fitness studies have concluded that walking in 10 minute increments for a total of 20-30 minutes a day increases cardiac, mental and overall health. Think about that. Ten minutes, three times a day. That equates to parking farther away, zooming around a store a few extra times, walking the dog a few extra blocks, taking a 10 minute walk at lunch or after meals or even marching in place while waiting on line. Walking increases your life span and keeps your lower body bones and spine strong. It is good for balance and an excellent means of transportation. For those of you with lower body injuries or pain, don’t give up. If you don’t have time to get to the doctor, you can go directly to a physical

therapist who will give you exercises and do treatments to alleviate the pain. Want to heal yourself? Search WebMD for tips on common causes of foot, knee and hip pain such as plantar fasciitis, patellofemoral pain and bursitis. Icing twice a day for five minutes can be curative. Also, know that walking for 10 minutes should not make any of these conditions worse. Another great exercise, especially if you are injured, is biking. Consider biking for transportation to town or the train and use a helmet. Too cold or dark out? A stationary bike is a great place to read the paper, catch up on emails or social media or have a chat with a family member. A decent stationary bike is around $200—the perfect early holiday gift. If you love the gym like me but don’t feel you have the time, rethink your gym workout. Try to combine exercises ,such as abs with arm strengthening or leg raises. Using an elliptical or bike with arm pulls for 20 minutes is all you really need. You can stretch and do spot toning at home later when watching TV or right before bed while winding down. Keeping a foam roller and a few weights at home will allow you to extend your gym workout to later in the day or early in the morning. Finally, use your weekends. Studies show that you can catch up on both sleep and exercise by binging on both when you have the time. The results are cumulative over a week. And don’t forget to stretch on weekends to prevent pain. Questions? Feel free to reach out on Twitter, @ DrNadyaSwedan.
