Saturday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. & Sunday, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m

Harmony Home Concierge 35th Anniversary Oyster Festival Sponsored by Optimum by Altice; Presented by Newsday

The Harmony Home Concierge 35th Anniversary Oyster Festival is a project of the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay—part of Rotary International—a volunteer organization whose members embrace the motto of “service above self.” Rotary Club volunteers produce the Oyster Festival and operate multiple food stations—including the renowned Frank M. Flower & Sons, Inc. sponsored raw oyster booth—to raise money to directly support local community organizations and Rotary projects, through the Oyster Bay Charitable Fund, Inc. The Oyster Festival also provides local nonprofit clubs and organizations a platform to raise their own monies through participation in the New York Community Bank Thomas Reardon Memorial Food Court. New York Community Bank’s sponsorship helps subsidize the cost so that the charities are able to keep all of their food booth profits. In addition to showcasing the historic hamlet of Oyster Bay and the beauty of the waterfront, the Oyster Festival generates great local economic impact. The festival will be on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 14, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Theodore Roosevelt Park, Oyster Bay.

Our Storied Past

More than 150 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt—the 26th President of the United States—was born to a wealthy family that summered in Oyster Bay not far from the waterfront property that today bears his name. Community leaders organized a parade to celebrate his 125th birthday, the roots of which became the Oyster Festival in 1983. Today the festival attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually; its success is attributed to the year-round dedication of members of the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay and its Long Island business community sponsors.

New This Year

Oyster Festival 2018 will feature a VIP Experience for the first time. Interested patrons will have the opportunity to pre-purchase a ticket via the festival’s website (www.oysterfestival. org) to gain entry to a spectacular waterfront space co-produced by

Live Nation, the global leader for live entertainment. Within this world guests can escape the masses and relax on lounge furniture, play lawn games, enjoy complimentary soft drinks, taste the stars of the show, freshly shucked oysters, courtesy of Frank M. Flowers and Sons and experience several sponsor activations. Guests will also receive a complimentary gift, have access to an executive restroom, the use of a festival concierge to help guide them through the fest, as well as the option for VIP parking with shuttle service. Tickets start at $99.

Beer And Wines Of The Region

Guests of the festival have spoken and organizers have listened. The 35th Anniversary Oyster Festival will feature a beer and wine tasting tent where we will bring the flavors of the region together to benefit the more than 30 charities that the festival supports in the hamlet of Oyster Bay. Here, guests will be able to purchase a ticket to enjoy samples of locally brewed beers and harvested wines from the tri-state area. Within this tent patrons will also receive an education on each brand and the story behind them. Tickets are $45 and $75.

Experience The Waterfront The John J. Harvey fireboat is coming back to Oyster Bay for the Oyster Festival. The fireboat, launched in 1931, served the City of New York and New York Harbor until she retired in 1994. She was a historic first: the first fireboat powered by internal combustion engines, the first that could pump and maneuver simultaneously, and the largest, fastest fire fighting machine of her time, capable of pumping 18,000 gallons per minute. John J. Harvey was named for FDNY pilot John J. Harvey who was killed aboard fireboat Thomas Willett while fighting a fire aboard the North German Lloyd Line’s SS Muenchen. Harvey assisted during such notable fires as the Cunard Line pier fire in 1932, the burning of Normandie in 1942, and the ammunition ship El Estero during World War II. She served the FDNY until her retirement in 1994. On September 11, 2001, John J. Harvey was recalled to service by the FDNY and reactivated as Marine Company 2. Alongside the FDNY fireboats, fire fighters and John D. McKean, she pumped water for 80 hours until water mains in lower

Manhattan were restored to service. Harvey’s action that week was the subject of countless news articles and a 2002 Maira Kalman book. The National Trust for Historic Preservation gave the Harvey a special National Preservation Award to recognize this incident.

Saved from the scrap yard by a dedicated group of volunteers, she now serves as an operational museum and education center. Last summer, multidisciplinary artist Tauba Auerbach, evoking the DAZZLE camouflage patterns painted on WWI and WWII vessels to confuse enemy U-boats, unveiled New York’s own 21st-century dazzle ship; John J. Harvey. Co-commissioned by the Public Art Fund and 14-18 NOW with support from the crew and volunteers of John J. Harvey, this magnificent work will be available for public viewing at the Oyster Festival. Free at the West End Waterfront Pier. Also present will be Christeen, a 40-foot, gaff-rigged sloop, owned and operated by The WaterFront Center, a not-for-profit community sailing and marine education center located in Theodore Roosevelt Park. Christeen connects more than 3,000 adults

and children to the water each year through school field trips, publics sails and private charters. The oldest surviving oyster sloop in North America and a National Historic Landmark, Christeen was originally built in 1883 for Captain William Smith in Glenwood Landing for harvesting oysters in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. For more than 125 years, she was used as an oyster dredge and a cargo carrier between Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. After surviving 16 major hurricanes, numerous Nor’easters, two sinkings and severe neglect, Christeen returned home to Oyster Bay in 1992. Volunteers worked with a full-time shipwright and raised more than $300,000 to completely restore and re-launch Christeen in 1999. The Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation is building a replica of the historically significant Ida May oyster dredge. The original Ida May was built in Bayville by Frank M. Flower in 1925 as one of the oyster industry’s first powered dredges. The completed replica will be owned and operated by the WaterFront Center for public recreation and marine and maritime education. The mission of the Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corp. is “to preserve Oyster Bay’s maritime heritage by involving the community in traditional boatbuilding projects.” Many volunteers under the guidance of local shipwright Josh Herman are learning new skills working together to create a significant vessel. Since 2009, Building J, a large shed on the Western Waterfront, has been transformed into a boatbuilding shop. The Christeen Corp is raising capital complete the project.

T

here are plenty of activities for children during the Oyster Festival, from carnival rides to the petting zoo. On both Saturday and Sunday, children can enjoy the carnival by Newton Shows, sponsored by Wild Bill’s Olde Fashioned Soda, on Fireman’s Field. Newton Shows is the oldest family-owned and operated carnival company on Long Island. Since their father bought his first Ferris wheel over 65 years ago as a fun way to make money to support his growing family, the Newton family has been honored to serve Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and parts of Westchester County. Over the years they have helped raise millions of dollars through their nonprofit “Partners in Fun” program and have supplied unrivaled entertainment for their corporate “Partners in Fun.” On West End Avenue, children can meet

exotic animals of the R.W. Commerford Zoo and enjoy camel rides and pony rides. And Kings of The Coast Pirates are back from another century sponsored by the Steven And Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center, thanks to a generous grant from Kohl’s Cares

Keeping Kids Healthy Program. Children need not be afraid as these are friendly scoundrels who will be inviting them on hunts for New this year is the Butterfly Experience, a family-owned and operated business. This is a fun and educational experience for the entire family. The fair goers get to go inside the exhibit with a feeding stick, feed, interact and learn fun facts about the butterflies. The staff goes above and beyond to answer all questions and treat everyone like they’re part of the family. For added convenience, there is a baby changing station sponsored by Long Island Parent and Babyganics located on West End Avenue across from the West End Stage. The tent will be set up complete with changing station and stocked with Babyganics product. Take a moment away from the hustle and bustle to take care of your baby’s needs.

ANNUAL

Food Court Guide For more than three decades, participating charities based within the Oyster Bay-East Norwich school district have been serving up fresh seafood, ethnic culinary delights and traditional American fare to hundreds of thousands of festival goers. Profits from the Food Court sales remain with each individual non-profit organization that sells the food item to help fund their programming. The Oyster Festival’s Oyster Booth Food Court sponsored by Newsday, and the Tom Reardon Memorial Food Court, sponsored by New York Community Bank, are the largest fundraisers that most of these charitable organizations participate in throughout the year. For some organizations, it’s their only fundraiser.

General Surgery at Glen Cove Hospital

Dr. John Cosgrove, MD FACS, has practiced general and acute care surgery for the past 28 years.

He has a special interest in abdominal wall hernias including complex/recurrent hernias. He specializes in the Rutkow-Robbins minimally invasive “plug and patch” repair for inguinal (groin hernias). This is a 30-minute procedure under light sedation and local with a small incision. This is an outpatient procedure and patients go home an hour after the operation. Then the patients resume normal activities the next day and sporting endeavors in one week. For the more complex abdominal wall/incisional hernias, Dr. Cosgrove works closely with his plastic surgery colleagues to affect the best functional and cosmetic result. A variety of minimally invasive techniques are employed, and most patients go home the same day or after a short overnight stay.

Dr. Michael Grieco completed a five-year surgical residency at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, after graduating from the Albany Medical College. He then completed one-year fellowships in advanced abdominal surgery at the Lahey Clinic, in Boston, and the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, in Maryland. Dr. Grieco is board certified in both General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery. In April 1990, Dr. Grieco performed one of the first Minimally Invasive Surgeries in the United States: a laparoscopic gallbladder removal. Since then, he has performed thousands of laparoscopic procedures on patients with gallbladder, appendix, colon, and hernia problems. Additionally, Dr. Grieco has performed over thirteen thousand colonoscopies.

Both Drs. Cosgrove and Grieco’s scope of services include minimally invasive surgery, hernia repair, appendectomies, cholecystectomies, small and large bowel procedures, screening colonoscopies and hepatobiliary surgery. They accept most insurance plans and translation services are available
