A Centennial Anniversary
St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope School celebrates a century of learning BY ANDREA BILTON
westbury@antonmediagroup.com
The phrase “first day of school” took on a certain significance exactly 100 years ago this September, when eight small classrooms came to life under the direction of Rev. Dr. William McGinnis as St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope Regional Catholic School opened its doors for the very first time.
T
he 2018-19 academic year will provide many opportunities for reflection for the students, families and faculty of St. Brigid, which serves age groups ranging from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade, as they celebrate their centennial anniversary of family-fueled, faith-based education. The school was founded in 1918 as Westbury’s first parochial school by Rev. Dr. William McGinnis, pastor of St. Brigid’s Parish, and was initially conducted in part by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. After welcoming its first handful of students, the school embarked on a century-long voyage of educational advancements
and societal changes while holding true to its transcendent Catholic values, and has now expanded to accommodate nearly 400 students and stands as the heart of an extensive alumni network. St. Brigid principal of 21 years, Paul Clagnaz, notes that the proud community will be focusing their year around unifying past generations and reminding them how the school once ignited their passion for learning. The school kicked off their

centennial year with a mass held on Sept. 8, which included a visit from the bishop as well as one of the graduates of the St. Brigid class of 1938: 94-year-old Frances Smith, an active member of the church community since her time as a student. “There are many people who have gone through the school over the past hundred years, those who are still alive, and are still connected with us in many ways,” said Clagnaz. “We want to be sure to have opportunities for people of all ages and of all connections to the school to celebrate with us over the course of the year.” To continue honoring this milestone, the school will be hosting a 5k Walk/Fun Run on Nov. 24, followed by an all-class reunion during which alumni from all stages of life are encouraged
to connect with old friends and mingle with new ones. Additional festivities will stretch out over the course of the school year, and include a curriculum fair centered around the past 100 years of history, a centennial fashion show and a gala dinner that will take place in May. The hope for these events is that attendees will take time to acknowledge the positive changes that have contributed to the school’s success while also appreciating the consistent anchor of their mission. Aside from apparent physical transformations, like the building’s upgrade from its original Post Avenue location to the larger facility in which the school currently operates at Maple Avenue, and curriculum developments, like the integration of technology into lesson plans and the derivation from strictly pen-to-paper learning techniques, Clagnaz specified

a number of ways in which St. Brigid has evolved over the course of the last century. According to Clagnaz, today’s classrooms still reflect major shifts in societal norms as they occurred over time. “The ’60s were a time of tumultuous change,” he said. “One of the things that came out of it was that you didn’t have to be a priest and you didn’t have to be a nun to do many of the things in the church. Lay people could teach, and lay people eventually became the last two principals here. And families in the ’60s were starting to make different choices—public school versus Catholic school, so enrollment started to drop, a trend that has basically stretched across the country. We were a school of 1,200 in the ’60s, we’re now a school of 350.” Another societal progression that can be visualized through the St. Brigid student demographic is the influx of immigrants to the states in
the 20th century. While the institution started out with a primarily Irish and Italian student body, its population has expanded to include students of an increasing variety of racial backgrounds. “St. Brigid became a school of no one ethnic group being a majority,” Clagnaz stated. “It’s really a multicultural school that represents people from all over the world. That’s one of the things that we pride ourselves in, being a place where diversity is celebrated, not just accepted. We really try to have opportunities for kids of different backgrounds to celebrate it with each other.” Though the school has sustained many changes over the years, one feature of the St. Brigid’s culture that has remained constant is a dedication to instilling important values and a lifelong passion for learning into each graduate. Clagnaz asserted that he hopes every student will leave the school instilled with both a sense of
intellectual curiosity and a moral compass to guide their future endeavors. St. Brigid continues to update their curriculum to foster a competitive, challenging and enjoyable atmosphere for their students. A few initiatives in particular include a mock trial program that the school coordinates in conjunction with St. John’s University School of Law, a developing opportunity for students to shadow college-level “mentors” in the medical field, and planned renovations to outdoor recreational facilities. Clagnaz notes that St. Brigid hopes to make productive advancements on their campus as they enter this new century, hoping for another hundred years of valuable education and positive community growth as they prepare for what the future may hold. “We have a very intentional plan here for the students. We give them opportunities

make enhancements and improvements,” Clagnaz said. “Because you have to be open, always, to things that come down the road that are new.”

ALUMNI
Looking Back On The Good Ol’ Days
Whether they graduated one year ago or 50, St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope School alums all share a deep love for the place that formed their early education. It was where they learned the alphabet, grew in their faith and were molded into people of character. Here, St. Brigid’s alum look back on what stood out to them about those wonderful K-8 years.
I thought the education was very good. We were far advanced in grammar and math. I found that very easy because of the background I got at St. Brigid’s. I remember all my nuns. They were beautiful and very, very nice. I took music lessons from them. I have fond memories of my years at St. Brigid’s. I was always first in line because of my size, but last in line because of my name. I remember every first Friday, we would march to the hall and have raisin muffins and coffee and would go to church. Every first Friday, it was a ritual. —Frances Zaino Smith, Class of 1938
There are still a lot of things I learned at St. Brigid’s so long ago, while there are things in high school and college I have no recollection of at all. Back in those days at St. Brigid’s you learned. [You learned] things of character. The curriculum, some items like American history and that sort, but mainly character. The nuns were adamant on you becoming a real person. A good person. —Frank Telese, Class of 1959
My experience at St. Brigid’s was wonderful, as was my entire childhood growing up in Westbury. I remember how kind and patient my teachers were, especially Sister Anne Marie, my second grade teacher, who helped me to learn to love school and learning. I spent eight years with many of my classmates and made lifelong friendships (now mostly virtual) that I remember with great fondness. Mostly, though, in addition to the great foundational education I received, my time at St. Brigid School solidified the connection I received from my parents to my Catholic faith, which has sustained me throughout my life. While I recognize the importance of a strong and effective public school system, because of my own experience at St. Brigid, I remain a firm believer in and supporter of Catholic education for those who want that for their children. —Mayor Peter Cavallaro, Class of 1975
I started at the old school, then went to the new school, then it got so crowded that I went to the Annex, and then I came back to the new school. In eight years I was in four different places. It was a lot of moving. We were with the same kids for eight years and you had really good, lasting friendships. When I graduated, half of us went to Catholic school, half went to public. We were well-rounded. We used to eat in the classroom and our mothers used to come in during lunch time to give the nuns a break. —Rosemary Reilly, Class of 1961
What I loved about my time at St. Brigid’s school was the guidance and support we received from the staff as well as how spirituality and faith were always at the center of our educational experience. Specifically, learning the Golden Rule, which says to “do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” has been, by far, the most important lesson I could have ever learned as a child. Even in the most challenging of times, I have found that living by this principle not only enables me to connect with others more easily but also helps me to always feel good about who I am and the choices I make. —Legislator Laura Schaefer, Class of 1982
My time at St. Brigid’s truly was a high point in my formative years and set the cornerstone for a life of community service and stewardship. It’s where I first began to nurture my relationship with God. It’s where I first had opportunities to explore experiences in athletics and music. Where my family and I made meaningful, lifelong friends and where I learned the depth of love for others, outside of family. I treasure the bonds made during that time to this day. I am truly thankful to St. Brigid’s for helping to lay the foundation for who I am. —Legislator Siela Bynoe, Class of 1981

has owned or been the driving force behind some of the area’s most successful restaurants, and is currently the chef/owner of A Lure Chowder House and Osteria in Southold as well as Be Ju Shashimi Bar in Melville. At Kingfish, that passion for seafood is obvious, with a variety of fish and oyster options on the menu. Oysters (locally grown specially for Schaudel) are served freshly shucked, fried in a salad or grilled on
makings and offerings of an oyster bar, while avoiding pretension and unapproachable cuisine. What diners can expect is seafood—fresh, delicious, seafood. Underwater offerings are Schaudel’s specialty; the Long Island dining icon

Walking into the Vanderbilt’s gorgeous lobby—outfitted with a hand-blown glass chandelier, glass and bronze entry table and custom-patterned marble floor under a 22-foot high rotunda—is enough to prompt guests to speak in hushed whispers, a volume usually suited for museums or libraries.
B
ut the party begins in Kingfish, the luxury apartment complex’s signature fine-dining restaurant, which opened to the public in July. Don’t be mistaken—the upscale eatery isn’t rowdy—rather, it’s a place where executive chef and kitchen veteran Tom Schaudel wants guests to settle in. “We want it to feel like that comfortable pair of sneakers or jeans that just fit right for some reason. We want people to feel that way about the restaurant,” said Schaudel, a Carle Place native. “You want to come down and have a big meal and big bottle of wine? Go ahead. You want to have a soda and oysters? Go ahead and do that too.” The expansive 150-seat restaurant and seasonal patio leaves plenty of space for
satisfaction in the grilled yellowfin tuna (served alongside warm fingerling potato salad, green beans, cherry tomatoes and quail egg) or the Pan Roasted Swordfish (plated with parmesan risottao mushroom and spinach) from Orient Point. Those looking to blend the best of two worlds should try the black linguini, a delightful marriage of pasta with octopus and calamari, or the bucatini, served with shrimp and crab under a lobster cream sauce. And landlubbers need not fear: Kingfish offers a flavorful grilled sirloin that puts most steakhouses to shame, as well as a variety of salads and sandwiches. On the small plates/appetizers menu, the savory grilled Colorado ribs, mussels steamed with Thai red curry, and grilled octopus all find themselves as worthy contenders for a first course. Meals end on a sweet note with the cinnamon apple
crisp, served in a skillet with a healthy scoop of vanilla gelato, or the Rocky Road bar, a delightful conglomeration of chocolate cake, marshmallow, wet walnuts and triple chocolate gelato. Rounding out the experience is an ample wine and beer list, as well as creative cocktails such as the Vanderbilt (Maker’s Mark, orange marmalade, solerno, tangerine juice and egg whites) and the Spice and Brine (Ketel One, pepperoncini juice and a smoked blue cheese stuffed banana pepper). With an exceptional menu, excellent service and a warm ambiance, diners will have no problem feeling at home at Kingfish. Just be sure to keep it down on the way out. Kingfish is located at 990 Corporate Dr., Westbury. To find out more, call 516-640-5777 or visit www. kingfishoysterbar.com.

A Changing Community Big projects slated for Westbury, Carle Place BY BETSY ABRAHAM
babraham@antonmediagroup.com
If one word could summarize the last year in Westbury/Carle Place, it would probably be “progress.” In numerous aspects of community life, major projects have gotten underway with others slated to begin in the coming months. Here is a snapshot of the projects we’re watching. Lesso Renovates The Source Mall In 2017, Hong Kong-listed Lesso Group Holdings Ltd. announced its $92 million purchase of The Source Mall. The mall, which had long been in decline, will soon see new life as a home furnishings destination, complete with new restaurants, community centers and co-working space for interior designers. While a number of existing
businesses will continue to serve the community, such as Fortunoff Fine Jewelry and the Cheesecake Factory, the renovations did force others to find new homes. School District Bond Approved In May, Westbury School District voters approved a $58,585,000 bond for projects at Westbury middle and high schools. The tax-neutral bond,

CHANGING COMMUNITY from page 19C no time in taking advantage of tunnel will be expanded, and new bike racks and artwork are set to be installed. The station will stay open throughout the construction, which is expected to begin later this year and be completed in 2022. Also on the to-do list is the replacement of the Cherry Lane bridge in Carle Place. Built in 1953 and currently standing at 12 feet, 10 inches, the bridge will be replaced with one that is 14-feet-high in early 2019. Westbury commuters will also see parking relief in the form of two additional parking garages, on the north and south side of the LIRR tracks. Downtown Redevelopment The Village of Westbury wasted
the $10 million in Downtown Revitalization Initiative funds granted to them by the state in 2016. Last year saw the approval of seven priority projects and 2018 has been marked by ongoing advancements, including the purchase of a space for Westbury Arts (which will allow them a permanent home for performances and meetings, as well as a gallery and workspace for classes), and a grant program to incentive business owners to upgrade their facades. In the coming year, residents can expect to see the starting of major streetscape improvements and upgrades to the community and senior center, as well as the opening of the Westbury Arts building.

Building On A Rich History
T
his year saw the addition of four sites to the Village of Westbury Heritage Trail, bringing the total number of local landmarks to 10. The newly-designated sites are the early Westbury Public School (1857) at 367 School St.; the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (1887) at 467 Maple Ave.; the Episcopal Church of the Advent (1910) at 555 Advent St.; and the Westbury Neighborhood House (1916) at 334 Winthrop St. Like the six sites that were recognized last year, the new landmarks are now designated with yellow plaquards indicating their signifance to the village’s history. The Episcopal Church on Advent Street was recognized not only for its historical significance but that of its architectural importance. The church was designed by John Russel Pope, architect of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. Still a place of worship for many in Westbury, the church gets its name due to the sanctuary being completed during the Advent
Community members and officials outside the early Westbury Public School season, on Dec. 19, 1910. Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is located on Maple Avenue, a street that shares the name Bethel A.M.E Way. The church is the first African Methodist Church to be organized in the village, and was started by a group of former congregants of
the New Light Baptist Church. Probably one of the lesser known sites on the trail is the location of the early Westbury Public School. From 1857 to the 1890s, the three residential buildings once housed the early school buildings of School District Number 1. Built in 1857, the house at

367 School St. was the second public school in Westbury. The structures north and south of it were added later on to expand the school in 1874 and 1884. The three buildings were later separated and moved to this location. The Westbury Neighborhood House has been a vital part of the community, providing food, clothing and programs to area residents since 1916. It has called 334 Winthrop St. home since 1920. Also on the Heritage Trail are the Religious Society of Friends Meeting House and Cemetery (1671), Westbury A.M.E. Zion Church (1834), Hicks Nurseries (1853), House of Ambrose Clark—currently the Westbury Community Center and War Memorial (1903), the site of the Vanderbilt Cup Race grandstand (1904) and Robert Bacon Memorial Children’s Library (1924). All the sites were chosen by the Westbury Historical Landmark Committee, with more locations expected to be added in coming years.

rom coast-to-coast, this year was marked by a visible increase in the amount of public demonstrations, protests and letter-writing campaigns. Right here in Westbury and Carle Place, citizens of all ages have spoken out on myriad issues: stronger gun laws, the rights of immigrants and funding for schools, among others. While some protests have resulted in change, the fight still continues for others; regardless, local residents are committed to advocating for what they believe is right.

That’s largely due to the tireless efforts of dedicated community volunteers, who band together to form groups such as Westbury Arts, the Westbury BID, the Carle Place Civic Association, PTAs and many other associations, to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Thanks to them, entertainment, camaraderie and family fun are always only just a few blocks away.
