“[The Office was the] biggest break of all time. I felt so lucky to have had any part of that show. I was a fan before being cast,” said Kemper. “It was a very warm, kind place to work.” (Photo courtesy of NBC Universal)

llie Kemper has filled many roles over the years: redhead, daughter, improviser, bride, mom, receptionist, Kimmy. But sitting down to read through My Squirrel Days, Kemper’s collection of personal essays, readers get a much warmer sense of the actress: an insanely talented and hilarious writer who you will immediately want to call your best friend. Known for her break-out role as Erin Hannon on The Office and leading role on the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kemper has found a niche playing characters that are exaggerated versions of herself: cheerful, wholesome optimists who are quick with a smile. It’s a label Kemper doesn’t seem to mind. “It comes naturally, so in that regard, I know what my strengths are and how to play to them,” she said. “I think Becca [from Bridesmaids], Erin

and Kimmy Schmidt, they’re very different but share an optimistic view of the world which I hope I have.” Kemper plays the titular character on Kimmy Schmidt, a woman making a life for herself in New York City after being kidnapped and held in an underground bunker by a cult leader for 15 years. It’s a dark premise, but one that creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have been able to infuse with comedy and hope. “They did such a brilliant job of creating this character. It’s such a bright show and it’s beyond admirable how [Kimmy] has remained cheerful and optimistic, even having undergone such an ordeal like that,” Kemper said. “She went through one of the most horrific things and still chooses to think the best in people.” More than just assuming the role, Kemper notes that she draws from Kimmy’s strengths. She adds that the

world seems completely different than it was when they filmed the pilot four years ago and that playing Kimmy has helped her find her footing. “The show has taught me about remaining tough and tenacious and relentless, because that’s who Kimmy Schmidt is. There’s been a lot of upheavals and changes in the world and it’s been nice for me to have this character to turn to,” Kemper said. “I think she’s such an emblem of strength and she’s taught me to be tough in circumstances that are really difficult. Playing her has been such a help.” The second half of the fourth and final season of Kimmy Schmidt premieres in January, with rumors of a movie already circulating. Fans can expect the show to end with happy endings for all the characters, Kemper said. “Everyone’s story wraps up so beautifully,” she said. “And Kimmy does something very concrete that improves the world. It made me so happy that we could send her off in that way.” Kimmy Schmidt has allowed Kemper to work with some of the
a person should behave. Not specifically related to comedy, but more on how to be a good person,” she said. “They are all exemplary people and led by example and I thought they were all kind and selfless and worked very hard.” Kemper is currently busy promoting My Squirrel Days, a personal look at everything from her childhood staging Christmas plays in St. Louis to her early days in improv. The book contains other gems as well: her failed attempts at communing with nature, the horrors of communal showers and the love she has for SoulCycle. Kemper is no stranger to writing; she’s previously penned pieces for satirical sites The Onion and McSweeney’s, as well for GQ and The New York Times. But My Squirrel Days provides a collection of smart, hilarious and endearing essays that gives readers insight into a woman who wears many roles and wears them all well. “I hope the book is entertaining, a funny book for people that takes their mind off of things,” she said. “I want it to be a nice break. I think the world is very tough right now, so I hope it serves as a respite.”

playing a receptionist on The Office to wearing hot pink pants and working with Tina Fey on Kimmy Schmidt, Kemper’s book is a sincere, hilarious glimpse inside the mind of one of Hollywood’s most endearing and down-to-earth stars. With the release of My Squirrel Days, Kemper falls into the good company of riotous women who have lived through the awkward, the glorious and the downright icky, and lived to pen the tale. Once you’re done with My Squirrel Days, here are some other titles worth the (re)read.
Tina Fey: Bossypants Tina Fey is the gold standard for comedy, so it only makes sense that her book is as well. Every page of Bossypants delivers multiple laughs, from her exploration of the ideal body (full Spanish lips, small Japanese feet and the arms of Michelle Obama), to her early years of improv to her godlike adoration of Lorne Michaels and how that infamous Sarah Palin impression got off the ground. Fey covers a lifetime

QUEENS from page 6A of success and failure in her witty, self-deprecating tone, making Bossypants a must-read for comedy lovers, bibliophiles, women, men, children above the age of 13, and humans in general.
Jenny Lawson: Let’s Pretend This Never Happened Most people gloss over the weird, terrible things that have happened in their life: Jenny Lawson puts it all out there on the page for readers to laugh at. And that’s okay, because she’s laughing too. Lawson’s tales—having her pet duck eaten by homeless people, dealing with crippling anxiety and growing up the child of an eccentric taxidermist—weave between reality and generously exaggerated, for a page-turner that is honest and over-the-top funny.
Nora Ephron: I Feel Bad About My Neck Before anyone else, there was Nora Ephron. Not only did she pen some of our favorite rom-coms, but her candid personal essays offer up a hilarious look at some of life’s not-so-hilarious moments. Ephron’s intimate, accessible voice makes readers feel as if they’re listening to a friend, rather than one of Hollywood’s most successful screenwriters, as she muses on the aging process.
Mindy Kaling: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) Mindy Kaling has graced the world with not just one, but two, works of comedic brilliance, but Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? holds a special place in this writer’s heart. It’s where Kaling expounds on her days growing up the adorably nerdy child of immigrant parents, how an impersonation of Ben Affleck put her on the map and why a true best friend knows they don’t always have to call back. Between the essays, lists and black-and-white
photos reminding us that chain-link belts were a thing in the early 2000s, Kaling’s first book is one that can be enjoyed time and time again.
Amy Poehler: Yes Please Amy Poehler is that cool older sister we all wish we had, so Yes Please, which reads part memoir, part instructional manual for life, is a welcome source of both wit and wisdom. Whether she’s talking about her love for improv, being a bad sleeper or telling readers to stick up for themselves, the Saturday Night Live star’s book provides plenty of hilarious and inspirational one-liners.

OFF-BROADWAY
And The Dundie Goes To... The Office! A Musical Parody pays tribute to Dunder Mifflin BY BETSY ABRAHAM babraham@antonmediagroup.com
H
ow do you pay tribute to one of the best TV shows of all time? With music, of course! The Office! A Musical Parody opened off-Broadway on Sept. 20, bringing singing, dancing and paper to the Jerry Orbach Theater in Manhattan. Based on the hit NBC sitcom of the same name, the show covers the greatest hits of The Office’s first seven seasons. From the Dundies, to the fun run, to the bat landing on Meredith’s head, the musical puts its spin on some of the show’s best moments. Split into two halves, with a 15-minute intermission, the play runs through hundreds of gags—there’s an entire musical number called “That’s What
She Said,” as well as one where the party planning committee celebrates every holiday known to man. While the show spoofs almost everything, it manages to keep the sweetness between Jim and Pam, a relationship that almost seems too sacred to tease. Filling the pants of Michael Scott, the world’s best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) boss is Sarah Mackenzie Baron. While she initially auditioned for the role of Pam, when she found out she was one of two girls amongst 50 others called back for the role of Michael, she ran with it. “I think it’s particularly important to have a woman playing Michael Scott in this day and age,” said Baron, noting that being a female makes some of Michael’s misogynistic, inappropriate
comments more palatable. “In a time like now when we have the Me Too movement, it’s easier to laugh at those jokes when it’s a woman poking fun. It makes it a little more comfortable and doesn’t make you want to squirm.” Steve Carell is an impossible act to follow and Baron said her take on the character isn’t an imitation as much as a tribute. She takes Michael’s ridiculousness and dials it up a few notches, making him even more extreme, as well as tender in his care and love for his employees—except for Toby. Everyone hates Toby. “We’re not imitating the show, we’re doing a tribute and showing you the love we have for it,” Baron said. “I could never do an impression of Steve Carell, that’s not what this is about. It’s about

capturing the essence and dynamics between these people who we all love.” Joining Baron on stage is Adelphi alum Ani Djirdjirian, who plays Kelly, Oscar and a very, very Italian Karen Filippelli. The show is incredibly fast-paced and with most cast members playing two or more characters,

ounting Crows may not have released an album since 2014’s Somewhere Under Wonderland, but the band hasn’t exactly been laying dormant. This year finds the Bay Area band hitting the road with their old friends in Live for the 25 Years and Counting Tour, which commemorates a quarter century since the Crows released its 1993 debut August and Everything After. The decision to go on tour with Ed Kowalczyk and the guys in Live was a no-brainer for Counting Crows vocalist Adam Duritz, whose relationship with his band’s special guests goes about as far back. “Ed and I were drinking buddies in LA. I’d see him when I first moved to LA and those guys were always around, so I would hang out back then,” he explained. “And we’ve done several tours together as well. My first memory of [Ed] was a year or two before our first album came out and their first album came out, they had this video where he’s on the beach and he’s just in jeans, barefoot with no shirt. He’s singing this song on the beach and while I can’t remember what song that was, it’s my first memory of him. I’ve known him that long.” With seven studio albums from which to choose from, the Counting Crows canon runs pretty deep. And not unlike their Northern California brethren The Grateful Dead, the Crows have not only encouraged fans to come record and distribute bootlegs of their high energy shows, but they’re equally capricious when it comes to deciding the set-lists from one show to the next. Ask Duritz what fans can expect

and he’s honestly unsure in terms of what songs are going to be played any given night. “I never know. We change the set every night and the songs change every time we play them. We don’t plan much more than a few hours ahead. It’s a mixed set list every night around dinnertime,” he said. “What you can be certain of I guess is that we’ll be completely passionate about what we’re doing because whatever we’re playing that night is exactly what we want to play that night or we wouldn’t be playing it.” The consummate music fan, Duritz has indulged himself well beyond serving as Counting Crows’ singer. He not only founded two separate labels (E Pluribus Unum and Tyrannosaurus Records), but actively signed acts. This passion isn’t surprising given that the Baltimore native grew up in Oakland and was more caught up with the writing
process over singing. “I’d sung all my life, but so what? What are you going to do with that? I love theater, but it’s not much part of our culture

– Adam Duritz and I don’t much like directors,” he said. “It was when I started to write songs was when I felt like this was something that I wanted to do with my life. Singing was just something that I did as
a kid thing—like a hobby. But writing—writing was different. Then I literally wrote a song and the moment I finished the song, I sat there playing it by myself and I just felt like I was a songwriter. That literally was what it was. It was life changing. I don’t know any other way to describe it. I felt completely defined at that moment.” Since releasing August and Everything After in 1993, the Counting Crows have been a constant presence on the road, drawing comparisons to The Band, Van Morrison and R.E.M. While the commercial and critical acclaim has been fairly constant, they’ve fallen victim to how broken the current music industry model has gotten in recent years, especially given the rise of streaming services like Spotify. It’s no accident that it’s been four years and counting since the Crows have deigned to release any new material. Not unlike many other bands, Duritz and
company are trying to figure out their next move, even as he keeps writing and his band continues booking gigs and playing live for their fans. “I’ve got a lot of pieces of songs. I’m just a little hesitant to finish them right now because I’m a little unsure of how to put out music right now. I kind of made everybody in our organization take some time, do some research and come up with some thoughts about better ways to get our music out there,” he said. “My last album was my favorite one that we’ve ever done. I loved [2014’s] Somewhere Under Wonderland. It got really good critical reviews this time and didn’t make much of an impression on the culture and I’d like to sort of change that for the next one.”

ean Johnson is a committed educator who believes in collaboration, communication and teacher development. A devoted lifelong learner, one of his primary goals is to continue to grow as an educator. He brings this enthusiasm for learning, along with a solid background as a teacher and administrator, to his role as Assistant Principal at Barry Tech. “There’s such a variety of programs here,” Johnson said of Barry Tech. “We’re teaching 21st-century career skills. I want to help get kids started on a path that can become a really viable career. It’s a hands-on opportunity to impact students’ lives.”
Sean Johnson is the new Assistant Principal of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech and Twilight Alternative High School.
Johnson is already working to make that impact. He believes in using data to drive instruction and to inform the future development of curriculum, making it even more relevant to students’ careers. “The steps we take in the short term will become bigger and more involved, leading to the realization of a long-term instructional plan,” he said. Johnson began his career as a teacher in the New York City school system. His potential as an educational leader was soon realized, and in six short years he was appointed to the role of English Department Coordinator. Having demonstrated his leadership skills, he was then chosen to

SPORTS The NFL Surprises Thus Far W
e are through the first six weeks of the NFL season at this point, and as per usual with the sport, some of the teams we thought would be contenders this year are not and vice versa. Some of the players that we were barely thinking about in August are now being hailed as heroes for franchises and must-see television. The league has always had a fun, yet unsettling way of turning every narrative that you’ve kept up with into meaningless dust by the time the season begins and once again, we have plenty of surprises to talk about.
The Teams That Have Stunned Us
Many viewed the Kansas City Chiefs as a team set for a rebuild year, with an abysmal defense and a quarterback no one knew about. What we didn’t realize was how good Patrick Mahomes would end up becoming. He’s the do-it-all quarterback that the Chiefs just didn’t have with Alex Smith; a guy that can run around, throw the ball

deep, and hit receivers in the tightest of windows. The team has gone from a middle-of-the-pack, question mark of a team to Super Bowl contender that can’t be stopped. It’s not just the Chiefs. The Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two dud teams last year, have also started out hot on offense, and the Chiefs and Bengals are sitting comfortably on top of their divisions, which was not widely expected entering this year. In fact, the league as a whole has been very offensively heavy, with 2018 already considered to be among the highest-scoring seasons we have seen. However, that hasn’t stop surprisingly defensive-heavy teams like the Chicago Bears and
the Tennessee Titans from slowing them down. What was also unexpected are the teams that are off to rough starts. The Phildelphia Eagles, the reigning Super Bowl champions, have already matched their loss total from last year and are struggling moreso on defense than they did last year. The Atlanta Falcons, who many thought had a great shot at playing in the Super Bowl in their own stadium, are climbing out a deep hole of a record after losing many defensive starters and quarterback Matt Ryan having disappointing showings on the road.
The Players We Didn’t Expect To Shine
As initially stated, no one thought Mahomes would be a huge part of the NFL season, yet he is the most talked about player through now. Othe quarterbacks have impressed, like Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff and his high flying offense, but the rookies who people thought would have to wait are in action and playing well. pick of the 2018 draft Baker Mayfield led a magnificent comeback against the Jets on Thursday Night Football and has now led a turnaround for the Cleveland Browns that they’ve been waiting for since the turn of the millennium. New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has also impressed in a few games, throwing deep to receivers and showing poise in tough situations. Even Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who was among the most scrutinized picks in this year’s draft, has led two big upset wins over the Titans and Minnesota Vikings with his insane escapability and playmaking. Among those shocking many at other positions is James Connor, a cancer survivor who currently starts at running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers as the replacement for Le’Veon Bell, who has been an angry runner that is tough to bring down, getting extra yardage that other backs may not get. Defensively, the Indianapolis Colts have played better than they

At Last, Two American Heroes F
rom my earliest days on this planet, I learned that Americans are always looking for a hero. They want to put someone on a pedestal and call that person a role model. Sadly, we haven’t had too many heroes in recent years, excluding worship of some political luminary. Luckily in the past two weeks, we now have two confirmed heroes. One is golfer Tiger Woods and the other is Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. The Tiger Woods story is full of mixed messages. There is no doubt that he hasn’t always conducted himself as a gentleman and his personal conduct destroyed his marriage. But he paid mightily for his mistakes losing millions of dollars in endorsements and his popularity in the golf world plummeted. After six years of darkness, he has somehow emerged as a new
INSIDE POLITICS Jerry Kremer sports hero in an industry that hasn’t had many heroes lately. Even a non-golfer, whether they are a man or a woman, has to marvel at his recent comeback winning his 80th championship. Crippled after serious back surgery and
doubting whether he could ever mount a comeback, Woods fought week by week and tournament by tournament to regain his skills. The sight of hundreds of people running behind Woods and screaming “USA, USA” had to make even the most jaded person realize that Tiger had once again become a hero. My second candidate for heroic conduct that deserves national applause is Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. Her willingness to come forward and testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee will give her a special place in the history of women who sacrificed much and gained little in the pursuit of the truth about her alleged attacker. Dr. Ford faced serious threats to her security and that of her family but was determined to tell her story, even at the risk that it would be ig-

nored by an all-male Judiciary Committee majority. On the very day that Dr. Ford testified, the National Center for Disease Control issued a study that one out of every three women in America has faced some type of sexual harassment or attacks and surprisingly that one out of every four males
face the same problem. The CDC added that by its estimates, more than 60 percent of the incidents go unreported for fear of retribution. This report bolsters the bravery of Dr. Ford and the many women who will be encouraged to come forward in the months and years ahead to report these incidents. In these days of national political tensions and divisions about almost every meaningful issue affecting our lives, it is gratifying to be able to point to two people from entirely different worlds who have sent out messages of hope and determination for those who need uplifting symbols. The Most Talked About Referee Calls
Prior to Week 3 of the preseason, everyone was worried about how the new helmet rules would impact the season and the sport as a whole. The new rules initially penalized all hits on a player that led with the helmet. After a committee phone call, however, the league added that it must be a blatant, intentional hitting with the helmet. Those penalties that were through the roof were tamed in the final weeks of the preseason and

have not been a huge talking point all season long. However, there was another rule change no one talked about entering the year that has had a big impact on the results of games. Defenders are now being asked to not lay their entire body weight on a quarterback when sacking them, and try not to lift the quarterback off the ground while doing so. The rule was put on display most significantly in Weeks 2 & 3 when Clay Matthews of the Green Bay Packers took down the quarterback and was penalized in both weeks. The frustrating aspect of the rule is not just that it makes it harder for defenders to sack quarterbacks, but the sacks by Matthews that were penalized didn’t seem to be a violation of the rule. Yet, NFL Officiating now wants to use those sacks as examples of what not to do when bringing down a quarterback. The rule no one talked about has now taken the league by storm, and no one, except maybe the quarterbacks, is happy about it.

VETERAN NEWS
Helping Homeless Veterans On Long Island
T
he U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced the award of $35 million in rental assistance vouchers to public housing agencies (PHAs) to combat homelessness among Veterans. These rental assistance vouchers, awarded through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUDVASH) program, will allow 212 PHAs across the country to provide permanent supportive housing for more than 4,000 homeless Veterans. Locally, the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation received $244,946 to support 25 rental assistance vouchers through this voucher allocation, bringing the total number of HUD-VASH vouchers in Nassau and Suffolk Counties to more than 500. The HUD-VASH program
combines rental assistance vouchers from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA. Since 2008, more than 93,000 vouchers have been awarded and approximately 150,000 homeless Veterans have been served through the HUD-VASH program. The vouchers have contributed to the 46 percent decline in homelessness among Veterans nationally since the Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness was launched in 2010. “We are fortunate in our strong relationships with HUD, Long Island elected officials, and all of the other organizations dedicated to addressing the issue of veteran homelessness,” said Dr. Cathy Cruise, the interim director of the Northport VA Medical Center. “We are proudly working together to fulfill our nation’s promise to our veterans.”
In the HUD-VASH program, VA medical centers (VAMCs) assess Veterans experiencing homelessness before referring them to local housing agencies for these vouchers. Decisions are based on a variety of factors, most importantly the duration of homelessness and the need for long-term, intensive support in obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. Veterans participating in the HUD-VASH program rent privately owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30 percent of their income toward rent. VA offers eligible homeless Veterans clinical and supportive services through its medical centers across the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Visit www.va.gov/homeless/ hud-vash.asp to learn more about the HUD-VASH program. —Anton Media Group

on the sweetest night of the year. Go through their bag of candy with them and set limits on how much they can have and the reasoning behind it. Fight the Urge to Overindulge Make a healthy, nutritious dinner before heading out for a night of trick or treating to curb over-snacking on the sweets. Adults can also indulge without feeling too guilty by selecting “healthier” options such as a piece of dark chocolate, which is known for its antioxidant powers, or low-fat candies such as licorice and lollipops. Get Rid of the Excess Move any leftover candy into a cabinet or put it in the freezer. You are less likely to sneak a piece if it is out of sight. If there’s candy in the house that no one wants either donate it or throw it away to avoid the temptation of mindless snacking.

Museum Quality Personalize your living space with a gallery wall

reating a gallery wall in your home is the perfect way to bring a boring, blank space to life and leave a lasting impression on your guests. Instead of hunting for the perfect statement painting or experimenting with wallpaper, consider arranging framed art prints, quotes and other decor pieces into an aesthetically-pleasing (and Instagramworthy) wall collage. It’s an easy way to personalize your space, as these galleries often reflect the unique personality of each homeowner. If you want to make an empty wall stand out, follow these basic steps to make your very own eye-catching gallery wall.
Pick your color scheme Though many gallery walls can still make an impact when there is no distinct color scheme linking its pieces, the best way to draw attention is to create a cohesive symphony of text and art by choosing two or three
colors to base your gallery around. Pick one accent color that will appear in multiple prints, and try complimenting colors to create an arrangement of shades that will help the wall flow together seamlessly.
Start collecting frames/ repurposing old ones Frames are the perfect touch to connect the pieces on your wall and make them appear as one polished display. Some people choose to hang their art prints in identical frames, or frames of the same color, or even a mismatched medley of old frames that they’ve now found a purpose for. But the important thing to remember is to add variation. Choose frames of different sizes and, if you feel bold, different styles. Create your masterpiece When in the final planning stages, it’s a good idea to lay out all of your pieces on the floor, in front of the wall on which they will hang if possible. Another strategy is to use paper, a pencil, and scissors to trace and cut out templates of each piece, taping them to the wall to get an idea of where you want to hang each item. Don’t forget to use a level and ruler when hanging so that nothing winds up crooked.

Owner and CEO Karen Levitt launched Grenn Pilot in 2016 with a line of outerwear designed in her own style, keeping the quality-seeking, trendsetting woman in mind while incorporating unexpected pairings. “The line features dramatic statement outerwear that can be worn casually or dressed up for evenings,” said Levitt, who decided to branch out last season, introducing handbags and home accessories. “If someone only wants a touch of glam, the accessories are a natural fit,” noted Levitt. “My best friend is an interior designer and said that the materials I use would be wonderful

“My home is like the line,” said Levitt. “Comfortable, classic, with the luxury of the pillows. I like the different textures that Grenn Pilot brings to a room.” The firm’s tagline is “Where luxury meets style,” and Levitt said her new category “has been expanding to some of the best home stores” and she is “working with great interior designers.” The brand is “true luxury with a sporty/vintage twist,” she said. “There is nothing fussy about this line. It is extremely versatile.” While focusing on quality and style, Levitt is conscious about the materials. “All of our skins come from sustainable sources and are a byproduct of the food industry,” she said. “We pride ourselves on using tanneries that are accountable and environmentally responsible.” Launching Grenn Pilot after spending 35 years as a buyer has proven to be an asset for Levitt, who was able to bring insight from the other side of the business to run the company locally. “I love living on Long Island and
having a business based here,” Levitt said. “The retail culture has changed everywhere with online shopping, department stores, coupons, etc. My strategy is to align Grenn Pilot with specialty stores. I have great relationships with my stores. It feels more personal to me. I try to do trunk shows with these stores and get on the floor to meet and chat with their customers. By doing this, I can figure out what they are looking for.” Grenn Pilot’s new home accessories have been warmly welcomed in several area shops. “The response has been amazing,” said Levitt. “Because of the options for customization in terms of the numerous colors as well as the reversible aspects of many of the pieces, people feel a true sense of freedom when choosing an item that suits them best. f you find yourself in the seaside town of Port Washington, take a stroll down Main Street and pop into Stam Gallery, a nod to the past. You’ll be glad you found an escape from the trappings of modern life. Steven Stam is the owner of Stam Gallery, an antique store that sells, buys and appraises fine art and antiques. With an eye for art and design, Stam respects antiques of other times and places. “My two most favorite activities are the constant process of learning—despite my age—while researching the history of objects and artists that come my way, and the absolute feeling of high as a result of a great discovery,” said Stam, who deals with period furniture and objects of virtue. As an appraiser of personal property for more than 40 years, with emphasis on fine art and antiques, Stam said he has developed a keen eye for objects of significant artistic beauty and quality, which jump out at him.

“Even in a pile of mediocrity, crying to be recognized and differentiated from its surroundings, it is wonderful to identify a beautiful little Tiffany mantle clock on the shelf in the midst of ‘made in Japan’ figurines and such,” said Stam. “It delights me to inform my appraisal client whenever previously unrecognized objects are found.” Over the years, one can imagine that Stam has come across a number of unique treasures in his line of work. Recent years’ discoveries, he said, include the unique modern marble desk of Marcel Breuer on which the original Whitney Museum was designed and a previously unknown very rare Rembrandt etching. His impressive collection of antique furniture actually stems from Long Island’s north shore, among other places. “The Great Gatsby country is rich with old estates, and lots of old people who bought their furnishings on Madison Avenue antique stores and on tours of Europe and the Orient. Their children want only modern furniture and designs,” he said of today’s collectors. “Consequently, we are offered a great many better and best antiques their kids dislike. There are many sellers and, unfortunately, few buyers here on Long Island, so we buy a lot of great quality pieces and offer them to a market of museums, dealers and discerning collectors all over America and overseas.” In offering a wide variety of high quality and interesting antique furniture, fine art and objects, Stam prides his business on being unique. He loves talking to people interested in his collection,

hen it comes to putting down roots in your family’s home, Anthony’s World of Floors Inc. is always ready to lay a good foundation. Anne Garofalo (right) works with her three brothers in the family business that has been around for almost 50 years. If they know anything, it’s how to make customers happy with a home that has solid footing.
Q A
Tell me about Anthony’s World of Floors Inc. Anthony’s World of Floors Inc. is a family owned and operated business our dad opened in 1972. I work together with my three, brothers Rich, Bob and Joe Garofalo. Our father gave us a strong, solid foundation to provide top-notch customer service. He said if you provide a great service, the people will keep coming back, and they will bring their family and friends. We have some of his first customers and their families still coming back.
Q A
What are some of the design trends in flooring these days? The “wood look” is today’s number one choice for flooring in every room of the house, including commercial spaces such as offices, stores and restaurants. Since traditional solid hardwood is not suitable in every room, durable water proof vinyl planks and porcelain tile perfectly replicate hardwood floors. They allow “wood look floors” to be installed in all spaces where solid hardwood is typically not recommended. With today’s advanced
technology and amazing imagery and texture, vinyl tile takes on an exact match to the real authentic hardwood floors. Gray tones, taupes and dark browns are the popular color trends in wood floors with the most requested species are white oak, maple and hickory. New home owners are steering clear of the traditional golden, amber and red tones of red oak, cherry and mahogany. For those who are carpet lovers, individuality of patterns and geometrics are on the rise, but the current color trend are grays that range from cool silver to warm taupe. Reclaimed wood and handscraped texture are on the radar offering a rustic chic and modern farmhouse look. Watch for more patterns like herringbone and chevron that give a more artsy or formal elegance.
Q A
Do you have any environmentally friendly options? Homeowners want to know where their floor came from. Is it safe for my family? Is it safe for pets? Using 100 percent natural, renewable, recyclable and home-grown materials is huge right now. If you already have wood floors, restore them. We can revive floors by sanding them down to the original wood, stain them and protect them with three finish options: water-based polyurethane, oil based polyurethane or natural oil floor finishes. We carry all flooring products: wood, carpet, vinyl, porcelain, rubber, cork, wool and rugs.
Q A
Does the business do any custom orders for clients? Absolutely. We do custom rugs, custom colors, custom patterns and layouts such as herringbone and chevron. We can custom dye
broadloom carpet to any color in the spectrum for as little as $100.
Q A
Where do you source your materials from? We proudly sell products manufactured here in the USA. We label and identify all products with the places of origin.
Q A
Why should someone buy from Anthony’s? Because we have made a commitment to be flooring experts, to provide answers to all flooring questions and solutions to all flooring problems and above all, to provide customer service beyond one’s expectations. In the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on America, several artists joined together to produce a soft cover book entitled 9/11: Artists Respond. It is a collection of art, sequenced to showcase the artists’ response to the terror that befell the world. One nine-frame piece entitled “Please Stand By…,” by Jeph Loeb and J. Scott Campbell, features a girl of about 8 years old watching cartoons on television. By the third and fourth frames, the image on the screen changes to a live feed of the Twin Towers ablaze. As the little girl stands transfixed, stuffed animal in hand and her face less than 12 inches from the screen, the commentator announces, “We interrupt this program to take you live…” The little girl turns away and cries out, “Mommy!” The next three frames begin with her mother dropping a basket of laundry. Then, with her face contorted in anguish, she embraces her daughter to shield her from the unrelenting televised images. The final frame is a close up of the little girl asking, “Mommy, when are the cartoons gonna come back on?”

In 2002 at North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, a group of boys and girls who lost fathers in the attack on the World Trade Center decorated stones to be placed in a memorial rock garden. The kids in the bereavement group sat together around a table covered with newspaper. In front of each of them was a large smooth oval-shaped stone. They decorated the stones with unique designs of paint and glitter, each one a personal remembrance of their fathers. “Mine is painted gold,” beamed Mack. “I painted it gold because my dad is like gold to me.” A heart framed Jenny’s design,
“because my dad will always be in my heart.” On Seth’s stone were two intertwined hands, a small one and a larger one that showed “me and my dad were best friends.” Victoria painted a fire hat and said, “My dad is my hero.” We might do well to remember that when funding cuts threaten to decimate arts programs in schools there is more at stake then we might imagine. The impact of the arts is not measured by standardized tests and its value is incalculable. Andrew Malekoff is the Executive Director of North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, which provides comprehensive mental health services for children from birth through 24 and their families. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). There is a real “whodunnit “ in your world this week, not to do with murder, of course, but a different minor infraction. The mystery, however small, will be an involving fascination. The wonderful outcome will be your heightened powers of observation, which enhance your experience whether you solve this one or not. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). People are constantly sending signals about who they are -- or, more likely, who they want to be. Mostly this happens on a subconscious level, though not as far as you’re concerned. You’ll pick up on signals like a social genius and then decide what you can buy into (or at least play along with) and how to proceed.
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
The economic trends of the day will finally match up with some of your personal trends, creating a wave of just the kind of abundance for which you’ve most wished. Perhaps you were missing out on this at other points in life, and that fact only makes you appreciate this sweet convergence of desire and good fortune more. The social swirl will get particularly interesting at the top of 2019. You’ll make yourself over just for fun. Also featured: a move, a homecoming and a natural wonder.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Seems like the minute after you define a relationship, it starts to feel different from the definition. Why is that? Perhaps relationships are too complex to be defined by a title or description. Where words fail, other kinds of communication will fill in. Your connections go much deeper than language. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). In adult life, the motives of others are often hidden. What makes maneuvering more challenging is that your own motives are also hidden, even to yourself. Whatever you can find out about your own subconscious intentions will be the golden information that clears the blockage between you and your goals. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’ll mind your own business but to no avail. It seems there are some things you are destined to be a part of. No matter how you try to ignore them, they will keep showing up in various forms until you engage the karma. So you may as well say yes to the lesson and work your way through. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Whether you want to attract an ally or discourage a rival, your game plan will be the same. That is to say, you’ll do all you can to appear strong, fast, beautiful, useful and all around superior. The flexing you will do is part of what makes this week so much fun. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’re back on the hunt for truth. It would be grand to find one a unifying theory to explain the complicated situation you’re dealing with, but likely instead you will have to settle for many small pieces of enlightenment that may or may not fit together. But as creative as you are, you should have no problem making this work. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You might be surprised what wakes you up to the joy of life this week. Not only could you not have predicted this, it’s the sort of thing that is only possible to experience by leaving home, in good faith, with a willingness to be interrupted and inconvenienced by the promise of adventure. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’ll get emotionally lighter and this may translate into becoming physically lighter as well. This levity is a function of cutting the tether that held you in a certain unhelpful orbit. It won’t be difficult to cut ties, just snip, snip. The hard part is realizing that you’re bound up in the first place. Get that and the rest comes naturally. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). There is someone you want to know. Why do you think that is so? Give a deeper thought to your attractions. Likely they have to do with a quality that you’d like to possess in yourself. In fact, you already have it, though perhaps not in the quantities you would prefer. That’s about to change. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You sometimes wish you could enhance feelings of community, belonging and connection in your environment without the hassle of having to join “the program.” Whether it’s a movement, political party, school, religion or other, this week it’s looking like it might take more than it gives. Is there another way? CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Dead, devitalized, worthless food can, when sprinkled with the right chemical compound, taste fantastic. That doesn’t make it nutritious. The same goes for the foods of the soul. This week, go for high nutritional content in all things, especially friendships and entertainment.

Curran Unveils New Assessment Website BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF editorial@antonmediagroup.com
N
assau County Executive Laura Curran today announced the launch of www.AsktheCountyAssessor. com, a website which will provide answers and allow questions regarding the county executive’s reassessment initiative. “This new assessment process will bring about many changes and a lot of questions. We are here to provide the answers. We will make every effort to provide full transparency on an interactive website,” said Curran. The website will offer a complete customer service outreach portal with all the information Nassau’s
property owners will need, including options for individuals to look up specific reassessment home values. The website will feature ongoing updates and frequently asked questions. Residents will have the ability to submit questions directly to the Department of Assessment. In the coming weeks, additional functions will be added, including a feature allowing property owners to schedule appointments at either the Department of Assessment in Mineola or one of four mobile offices. Residents will also be able to access a report generated by Prognose, a program that provides a full picture of a resident’s property assessment,
comparable sales in their area and other important information. The website will be an important resource as Nassau County Assessor David Moog moves to re-staff the Department of Assessment. More than 100 employees were lost when the prior administration froze the roll in 2011. Nassau County Assessor David Moog has provided the levels of assessment for the tentative roll for tax year 2020-2021. Based on his professional responsibility and expertise, and the results of an expert analysis, he has set the new class one level of assessment at .10 percent and has set the levels of
County Executive Laura Curran reviews the brand new assessment website. assessment for property classes two, three and four at 1 percent. This initiative will create an accurate assessment roll for the first time since the roll was frozen. “This is step one of a new customer-friendly Department of Assessment,” said Curran. “We are staffing up to respond to our residents. And while our telephone system is still being set up, property owners can use this new website. Our
residents are the customer, and they will come first.” Curran continues to encourage residents to make sure their property assessments are accurate. “Property owners will absolutely keep their right to grieve their assessments,” said Curran. “Property owners, however, shouldn’t have to file a claim to be treated fairly. That’s our job. A correct, defensible assessment roll accomplishes that goal.”

OFFICE MUSICAL from page 10A Djirdjirian said one of her favorite parts about being involved with the parody is watching everyone shine. “This has been the most incredible team I’ve worked with. There’s such a sense of belonging and welcoming and family within this creative team and cast. There’s not one weak link
and everyone is supportive,” she said. “The whole cast is committed to their characters and is so freaking talented.” The show’s creators, Bob and Tobly McSmith, are no strangers to spoof creation. Their previous credits include FRIENDS! The Musical Parody, Bayside! The Saved by the Bell Musical and Full House! The Musical. With The Office, they give fans a place
to pay their respects and celebrate Pennsylvania’s most famous fictional paper company. “It’s a love letter to The Office. It’s truly a bunch of people who love The Office doing the show for an audience of people who love The Office,” Baron said. “It’s a really neat tribute to our favorite show and people who love it as much as we do.”

CHEF Q&A
From Greece, With Love
BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFauci@antonmediagroup.com
W
hen Maria Zoitas immigrated from Greece to America in the 1970s, she knew she wanted to bring with her a piece of her heritage. For more than 40 years, Zoitas and her family have shared their love of Greek culture and cuisine through Westside Markets in Manhattan. Now, she has given her delicious food to the masses in the form of a cookbook. With more than 175 recipes complete with stunning larger than life photos of food, Mediterranean Cuisine-Made With Love: From the Greek Island of Lefkada to Manhattan’s Westside Market is now available to add to your cookbook repertoire.

This style of cooking turned out to be one of the healthiest forms of cooking and it has shaped me in learning to use fresh ingredients. In my opinion, and maybe I am biased, the Mediterranean cuisine is the best in the world. This was the style of cooking that I was surrounded by and taught as a little girl. You have to make every meal with love and give it the attention it needs.
Q A
Tell me about yourself. Did you always love being around food? From an early age, I always loved cooking. It was my passion and always a dream that I would have the opportunity to cook for so many people. But at the time, Greece was in an economic misery. Once I got married, we left for America along with many other Greeks. I immigrated to the USA 45 years ago; my first experience with cooking at a supermarket was at Madison Street, where my husband owned a small market with his partner. I worked at the market as well as a cashier and also worked at the butcher department. I had a small burner that I would cook for my husband and his partner and there was always plenty to feed a few more. I have three children and after they were grown, I returned to my calling and began cooking in our Westside Markets.
Q A
What is your earliest memory of being in the kitchen? When I was 11 years old, I remember helping my mother cook for the workers we had in the olive fields. I used to help her cook marmalade-style desserts from various fruits like figs, apricot, raisins and grapes. I realized that it was my passion to cook and I always yearned for

everyone’s approval. In my later years in America, I would always entertain my husband’s large family; that was my indicator that one day I would be cooking for a huge audience.
Q
As an immigrant from Greece, what has it been like to bring your culture and food here to America? As a young girl, I was taught to cook using the natural ingredients that we had at our disposal. Organic olive oil and spices, organic vegetables and fruits, homemade strained yogurt. At the time I didn’t realize, but this way and style of cooking represented many things about me and where I come from.

You and your husband have owned Westside Market for more than 40 years. What can people find there? The same way I cooked for my family I cook for our customers, and Westside Market is a food oasis in New York. We have an unrivaled selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, hundreds of soft and hard cheeses from all over the world, a huge prepared food section made with the finest ingredients, fresh breads, coffee, fresh juices and many Greek specialty items.

Q A
Your cookbook is gorgeous! What are three of your favorite dishes to make? I love cooking and try to cook as natural and as healthy as possible. Two of my favorites are classic Greek dishes: Moussaka and spinach pie. They remain some of the most-requested dishes at the markets.

The third recipe is the cheesecake, which is the dish that launched our prepared foods section many years ago. When I first came to New York, cheesecake was very popular in the city so I decided to create the very finest version, using the best quality ingredients we could find. It has sold more than 1 million pieces.
Q
You live in Whitestone, which has its own impressive Greek population. What are your thoughts on Long Island’s Greek community? Long Island has a great GreekAmerican community. The communities are growing, as housing is more spacious and affordable and life overall in Long Island is less stressful than that of New York City.
A
Q A
Why should someone add Made With Love to their shelf? Anyone interested in authentic Greek cooking, using natural ingredients, would love this book. Also, anyone who has a passion for Greece and Greek culture—as there are many photos from Greece and information about Greek cuisine throughout the book. Mediterranean Cuisine-Made With Love: From the Greek Island of Lefkada to Manhattan’s Westside Market is available on Amazon and other locations where books are sold.

The homey interior of Mac & Melts

Mac & Melts: The Ultimate Comfort Food BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

n this day and age of fast casual food, macaroni and cheese has been elevated far beyond its pre-fabricated Kraft origins. Look no further than Garden City’s Mac & Melts, which is celebrating its fourth anniversary. Located in a strip at 684 Stewart Ave., this cheerful and bright 1,300-square foot eatery boasts 15 different variations of mac and cheese, ranging from the basic All American (combo of Wisconsin Sharp and Wisconsin Aged Cheddar Cheese) to more exotic versions like Pesto Chicken
Mac and Cheese (Buttermilk fried chicken, pesto sauce with Wisconsin cheddar and mozzarella), Veg Head (broccoli, tomatoes, zucchini, roasted red peppers, creamy goat cheese), the South Philly (shaved roast beef, mushrooms, onions, roasted red peppers and homemade Cheese Whiz) and Make Shroom (sautéed mushrooms, aged Gouda, Gruyère
Margherita Mac
Deluxe Mac & Melts All-American Burger
and truffle oil drizzle). The Short Rib Mac (braised short rib with Wisconsin sharp cheddar) is particularly stellar. Like the other types of mac and cheese, it features that fine line of mouth-watering characteristics endemic to this kind of culinary brilliance—a crunchy crust that covers al dente elbow macaroni and top-grade cheeses that maintain a gooey consistency that avoids any kind of wateriness. The ribs further imbue the dish’s textures with flavors that seep into every bite. If you choose to dine in, there is an M&M Sampler consisting of the All American, Make Shroom, Alpine (Hormel bacon, Gruyère, caramelized onions and smoked Gouda), 5 Cheese (smoked mozzarella, aged Gouda, Wisconsin sharp cheddar, Wisconsin aged cheddar, Gruyère), cheeseburger, Southwestern (Wisconsin aged cheddar,

pepper jack cheese, jalapeño, Andouille sausage topped with crushed tortilla chips), Buffalo chicken (buttermilk fried chicken, tomato, celery, Wisconsin aged cheddar, Wisconsin blue cheese, Frank’s Buffalo hot sauce, topped with crushed tortilla chips) and short rib. The other half of the store’s names are its array of melts including the Classic Wisconsin Melt (a smooth blend of Wisconsin’s finest mild and aged cheddars on Pullman bread and grilled to perfection), the Mac & Melt (deep-fried mac & cheese, aged cheddar stuffed between two slices of Pullman bread, topped with homemade sun-dried tomato pesto) and the Dirty Tuna Melt (tuna salad prepared with diced celery, green apples, sliced jalapeños, crushed potato chips and pepper Jack cheese on sourdough). One of the 15 mac and cheese options on the Mac & Melts menu (top) and the Mac N Melt (bottom)
The turkey pastrami wrap is the latest addition to the Mac & Melts menu the carnivore’s plunge can sup on the Mama Luke (grilled portobello mushroom, zucchini, roasted red peppers, onions, fresh mozzarella, arugula, pesto and balsamic drizzle on ciabatta with a fried egg available to add). There is also the option to add caramelized onions, sliced tomato and bacon to the already delicious proceedings. Recently added to the menu are wraps and a tomato bisque brimming with the kind of subtle rich flavor that allows it to avoid having a pedestrian experience with what can oftentimes wind up being a one-note kind of soup. As for the wrap options, while the BLT, avocado, pesto and buffalo are solid entries on this menu, every bite of the turkey pastrami wrap tickles the taste buds as the mash-up of Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing blend beautifully with
the kosher namesake meat used for this dish. Mac & Melts proprietor Richard Yorke is a Jericho resident who has been turning the masses onto this twist on an American classic with a major assist from his octogenarian father Mel. Fresh ingredients that are made-toorder are the hallmark of the business and extend to using gluten-free pasta. There is also an extensive catering menu available. And if you somehow have room for dessert, PBNJ, which is deep-fried creamy peanut butter, bananas, Nutella and grape jelly on Pullman topped with Cool Whip and chocolate syrup awaits.

THE SPORTS DESK
Postmortem Baseball
BY CHRISTOPHER BIRSNER
cbirSner@antonmediagroup.com
A
s we approach the World Series, we inch closer to the end of another baseball season. For the hometown teams, the New York Mets and Yankees, there were many highs and lows to an otherwise eventful year. It’s time to look back at what these teams should be proud of after one year under new management and what they need to improve on as free agency and the winter meetings loom.
New York Mets
The Mets had a rough first season under manager Mickey Callaway, finishing 77-83 and fourth place in the NL East. The most successful Met all season was Jacob deGrom as he is among the Cy Young award favorites after completing the season with a 1.70 ERA. That’s the good news for this team, and the future is even
more bright with Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler in their pitching rotation, as long as the team doesn’t try to trade them away. The bad news is that the batting on this team was so horrendous this year that the pitching couldn’t hold off opponents long enough to win. They finished second-to-last in batting average and hits, and near the bottom in most other batting categories. While players like Wilmer Flores and Brandon Nimmo played well, others with higher expectations didn’t reach them. Notably, Yoenis Cespedes was supposed to be a big factor at the plate after a massive contract extension, but he dealt with injuries and barely played. Top priority this offseason is to explore the market for a hitter that can do more than just hit home runs, but extend innings by getting simple base hits. These decisions will have to be
made by a new general manager, as Sandy Alderson resigned in late June for health concerns. For the Mets organization, this decision is crucial in getting the franchise back on track and ready to contend next season.
New York Yankees
The biggest story of last offseason was the Yankees collection of high-powered hitters that were to be used to make a championship run this season. The team ended up going toe-to-toe with the Boston Red Sox only to fall just short of both the AL East division title and the divisional series to their longtime rival. Still, the team has an optimistic future ahead with a few adjustments that they should keep in mind going into the offseason. Luis Severino had an excellent year, but the rest of the pitching staff did not perform nearly as well as he
did. Adding another starting pitcher into the mix is a necessity if the team wants to go on a deep playoff run next year. And while the team had a historically great season of home runs, with big acquisition Giancarlo Stanton leading the way, the team failed to meet some batting expectations as they sat in the middle of the pack in hits. Like their crosstown rival, they should explore getting a hitter that has a higher frequency at hitting the ball, but not just for power. Lastly, first-year manager Aaron Boone had a nice start to his tenure, but he needs to make better judgment calls when it comes to pulling pitchers sooner and general lineup decisions. With a few additions to the personnel and more growth out of Boone, this team is sure to stay in the championship mix for years to come.
