Wicked For Good

An alternate Oz has been Broadway’s iconic gem
BY JENNIFER FAUCI
Ryan McCartan and Jessica Vosk in WICKED.
JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
“I
get to be the green girl. How awesome is that?” said Jessica Vosk, a born and bred Jersey girl, who landed the role of Elphaba in Broadway’s Wicked. The musical recently celebrated 15 years on the Great White Way and Vosk, who donned green skin in July, shared her whirlwind experiences thus far, including her role’s impact on society, a new album and what Kristin Chenoweth said to her backstage. “I had a very musical childhood. My father taught me how to sing when I was 3—both of my parents are creative artsy people—and that laid the groundwork for figuring out how Jessica Vosk (Photo source: Facebook) to make it in the world of theater,” said Vosk, who always had a dream of someday being able to do what her idols were doing. At the age of 9, Vosk saw The Secret Garden and fell in love with it. Right away, she had her parents put her in as much community theater as possible, which she continued throughout high school and college. She first enrolled as a musical theater major at The Hartt School in West Hartford, CT, but found that it wasn’t her cup of tea, prompting her to leave and continue her studies at Montclair State University, graduating with a degree in communications. “I actually worked in finance for three years. I never went to theater school, so it’s a different path than most for sure,” said Vosk, who worked on Wall Street for three years and during that time shut out anything creative. “I subconsciously put Broadway in the back of my mind until I realized a part of me was missing, so I started to go to open mic nights around Manhattan. I went to open calls and did the grind. Somebody heard me sing and took a chance on me.” Vosk’s first foray into theater was at Carnegie

Hall. The rest, she says, is history. “When I got the call for Wicked, I was sitting in my dressing room for Fiddler on the Roof. I remember saying, ‘Don’t lie to me,’” she recalled, ultimately saying yes to the role of Elphaba on tour. “It took me a minute to fathom what was happening. I left Fiddler on the Roof and thought to myself, ‘What have I gotten myself into,’ this is the hardest role I have ever seen.’ I was so scared and really nervous.” Vosk traveled on tour for 13 months and considered it a blessing to have met so many people along the way. The tour felt like a natural next step, until she joined the Broadway company this past July. “It’s so surreal because this is such a big year for Wicked. This role is iconic; it’s a beast and not too many women have conquered and taken on this role,” said Vosk, who wanted to bring a lot

of herself to the role. “Elphaba is very powerful and opinionated but she sticks her foot in her mouth a lot, which I can relate to. I always leave every show with these new notions about life and friendships and what it means to be different.” The musical is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, and serves as an alternate telling of Frank L. Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, taking place before and after Dorothy Gale comes to Oz. The themes of the show center on unlikely friendships between Elphaba and Glinda, and how bonds are created in the most unique places. Vosk noted that although the story for Wicked was created in 2003, it is still strikingly relevant.

WICKED from page 3A “It’s hard to go there as Jessica Vosk and have everyone in the show be mean to you, so it’s hard to navigate that at times. I remember being a kid and being made fun of and I carried that throughout my life,” she said. “I am a very huge advocate of honesty and my hope was that I could take things that cause people a lot of pain, like bullying, and convey that it is 100 percent ok to be who you are and be unapologetic for it. Elphaba wants the best for everybody; she is selfless and completely misunderstood because the Ozians created her as a wicked witch.” The show recently welcomed back Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, originators of Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, for a 15th anniversary television special. For Vosk, it was amazing to see the two women who created the phenomenon of Wicked. “Those two are completely lovable and could not be more different. It was an honor to have Kristin
come and see the show after 15 years of not seeing it,” said Vosk of Chenoweth, who went backstage after the show and exclaimed how proud she was of the entire cast. “I get a lot of strength from someone like Kristin Chenoweth saying she’s really proud of me. I take my cues from people like Idina and Kristin. Elphaba is a badass, period. And I think Glinda is too.” When she’s not defying gravity, Vosk has become her own kind of popular, having released her album titled Wild and Free. Completely funded by the fans (her fanbase is 18-24 years old), Vosk got
a Kickstarter campaign together and in 72 hours, funded about $40,000, strictly from her fans. The album is a combination of Broadway, pop and rock and is sold at the Gershwin Theatre. “I remember being that kid at the stage door, going to the theatre and buying my idol’s cassette tape to get it autographed and I get to do that now,” she said. “I’ve trusted the universe thus far in pointing me in the right direction, why stop now?” Wicked is currently playing at The Gershwin Theatre, located at 222 W 51st St., New York. Every day we make lots of choices and decisions that can impact our health. Some decisions involve what we eat, where we eat, what we drink, how we get to school or work and how we spend our free time. With overweight and obesity affecting so many of our youth today, parents and caregivers need tools to help establish good habits that can have a lasting impact on their family’s health.

Dee Snider is enjoying a career renaissance thanks to the success of his new solo album For the Love of Metal
Dee Snider Finds His Own Rocktopia BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
W
hen it comes to being creatively vibrant, Dee Snider must have been a cat in a prior lifetime. While Snider came into the public eye as the front man for the late lamented Twisted Sister (the band broke up in 2016), the Long Island native has let no moss grow under his feet. His latest project finds him reprising his role in Rocktopia, the former smash Broadway musical that’s getting ready to be staged at the Tilles Centre. The brainchild of vocalist/ recording artist Rob Evan (Jekyll & Hyde; Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and Maestro Randall Craig Fleischer (San Francisco Symphony), Rocktopia serves as the crossroads where the
worlds of classical music and classic rock collide. Snider is part of an ensemble of vocalists, a five-piece rock band, a 30-person choir and 20-piece orchestra that includes Celtic Woman’s Máiréad Nesbitt and weaves in works by Beethoven, Stravinsky, Mozart and Strauss, with songs by The Who, Queen, Aerosmith, Elton John and Led Zeppelin. Snider appeared in the original Broadway run of the show earlier this year, rotating into the role before being asked to return as the creators look to take the production to a wider audience. “When they were doing the original run on Broadway, they had Pat Monahan [from Train] in for a couple of weeks. They decided they wanted to have a different rock star in each week. So they wound up having Pat

A few months after the show ended, I got a call from Rod Evan, the creator, and he asked how I’d feel about being ‘the’ rock star and that they wanted me to join the cast. So I
said, ‘So I won.’ He said, ‘What?’ I said, ‘So I won the contest?’ He said there was no contest but I said, ‘Yes, there was, and I won it,’” Snider laughingly explained. “So I joined them, and the plan is for me to go international with

Looking At The World With New Eyes BY BETSY ABRAHAM
babraham@antonmediagroup.com
T
hrough the eyes of a child, the world is a wonderful place filled with color and life and excitement. But as adults those colors often seem to fade and the excitement gets traded in for worry and discontent. But with The World is Awake, Linsey Davis has captured the spirit of celebrating the day-to-day. The award-winning journalist’s children’s book is a beautifully illustrated look at seeing God’s hand in everything. It was an innocent question from her son that planted the seed for Davis. “My son, who was just over two at the time, asked if God opens up the flowers. I was pleasantly surprised by his curiosity to make this connection between God and nature,” said Davis, adding that through her book, she
hopes to “meet young people where they are, as far as their excitement and curiosity about nature and the world around them and connect that with God’s handiwork and creation and the little miracles and blessings we’re surrounded by every day.” Written in lyrical and playful rhyme, Davis inspires young readers—as well as adults—to be thankful for all the blessings, from the food they eat to the beauty of nature. “Just look at the sunrise that’s painted the sky and look at the songbirds, all starting to fly. The world is awake—it’s a wonderful place, alive with God’s power and glad with His grace,” the book reads. Davis said she hopes parents that read the book to their children are “reminded of that vision they once had.” “As an adult we stop noticing and taking the time to pay attention. Hopefully,
parents will remember that it’s the little things and reopen their eyes again and look at the world around them with the contagious excitement little children have,” Davis said. Davis notes that despite statistics that show more than 50 percent of children are minorities, 90 percent of the main characters in children’s books are white. As the mother of an African-American son, it was important to her to showcase that not everyone looks the same. “Kids look to books to find themselves. It’s really important for kids to see different children, so they’re exposed at an early level and there’s no misunderstanding that there’s other kids out there,” she said. Davis has been a journalist with ABC News since 2007, reporting on everything from the Boston Marathon bombing, to the Nairobi Mall massacre to the Haiti earthquake and

Harvey Weinstein allegations. She said her career path allowed her to combine her love of telling stories with her natural curiosity about life, as well as gives her a front row seat to history. Following the success of The World Is Awake,, Davis is already working on a second book slated to come out in August. One Big Heart will be about how people are more alike, than different. “Our country is becoming a more colorful place but at times we seem more divided. I felt, what better audience to target than the youngest among us, to really embrace diversity and talk about how our skin, hair, bodies and personalities are different but God gave us this one big heart and that’s where the love starts,” Davis said. The World is Awake is now available at bookstores and online.

Nassau BOCES Educators Award Grants To Benefit Students
SCHOOL NEWS
N
assau BOCES employees were recently awarded grants totaling almost $50,000 through the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The grants will be used to purchase a 3D printer, watches and timers, a Zenergy Ball Chair, master classes from professionals, a Sensory cart along with other projects. “Over the years we have supported a lot of highly exciting projects that have had an impact on our students,” said Dr. John Gangemi, Foundation Chairperson. “A total of 273 grants totaling over $400,000 have been awarded since the inception of this program in 2007.” Students at Jerusalem Avenue Elementary School will benefit from a grant to buy Zenergy ball chairs to help with their movement and balance. “These adaptive chairs will help to improve student attention and focus,” said Nicole Rosamilia, Occupational Therapist and grant recipient. Long Island High School for the Arts students will have the opportunity to learn from professionals from the American Ballet Theater residency and the Roundabout Theatre Lighting Design program thanks to grants from the Foundation, explained Jerry Nobile, instructor at the school. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization supporting initiatives beyond the scope of the agency’s budget. The
organization raises funds through events such as its annual gala recognizing honorees of the Nassau BOCES Education Partner awards program. Now in its eighth year, the awards program honors people and organizations that share Nassau BOCES’ commitment to public education. “This foundation is a fine example of an extended family. The resources help to supplement what we
do here at Nassau BOCES,” said Dr. Robert R. Dillon, Nassau BOCES District Superintendent. Grant-funded teaching innovation is just one way the agency fulfills its goal to ensure student success. Nassau BOCES will continue to set the standard for high-quality programs and services that enable all students to reach their full potential. —Submitted by Nassau BOCES

Cradle Of Aviation Museum Holds STEM Career Expo
O
n Oct. 29, 300 10th and 11th graders participated in the Long Island STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Career Expo at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Company representatives from industries such as aerospace, healthcare, engineering, energy and more met with students, inspiring them to explore as well as prepare for the careers of tomorrow. During these sessions, students gained a unique perspective on potential careers from the best source—local industry professionals. Northwell Health, Microsoft, PSEG, JetBlue, and East/West Industries have joined several other Long Island based businesses to instill in students the need for a local talent pool thus ensuring their corporate sustainability. In addition to industry professionals, representatives from the higher education sector discussed
their role in providing the foundation students will require to obtain careers in the STEM fields. “The Cradle is proud to provide a link between the business and educational communities to help further development student interest in STEM careers. The aim is to build awareness to the job opportunities that exist right here on Long Island.” said Andrew Parton, executive director at the Cradle of Aviation Museum and Education Center. Students rotated through various stations set up throughout the museum galleries in small groups, which enhanced the discussion between company representatives and students in these various disciplines. The museum is located on Museum Row, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., in East Garden City. For more information, call 516-5724111 or visit www.cradleof aviation.org. —Anton Media Group

November Movie Previews BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (PG-13)
BY CHERYL WADSWORTH editorial@antonmediagroup.com
T
he chill factor has begun early as we unpacked our sweaters, winter coats, hats and gloves mid-October. Election Day and Veterans Day are fast approaching with Thanksgiving just around the corner. Blockbuster films are set to be released throughout November, giving a safe, warm haven for those looking to escape the cold and reality, if just for a few hours. The following are just a few previews as there are a lot of good movies coming out this month.
DR. SEUSS’ THE GRINCH (PG) On Nov. 9, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is reimagined in this 3D computer animated movie based on the 1957 story written by Dr. Seuss. Yarrow Cheney and Scott Maiser direct this clever film narrated by Pharrell Williams and starring the voices of Benedict Cumberbatch, Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson, Cameron Seely and Angela Lansbury. You will be delighted to watch your favorite curmudgeon plot against the residents Whoville, who are gearing up for their annual holiday celebration, but even the Grinch can find love and happiness.
Nov. 2 sees the debut of Bohemian Rhapsody, directed by Bryan Singer. Rami Malek stars as the flamboyant and extremely brilliant musician, Freddie Mercury, of the rock band, Queen. Malek is best known for his award-winning performance in the series Mr. Robot. His transformation into Mercury—including a set of false teeth and securing a movement coach aiding in perfecting Freddie’s mannerisms— pays off, resulting in an intense show including Lucy Boynton, Tom Hollander, Mike Myers and Gwilym Lee representing the rise of Queen leading to its astounding Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985. Original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor were creative consultants. Go for the music, stay for Malek’s performance.

Relaxation Station Safavieh introduces a new lifestyle design BY JENNIFER FAUCI
T
he landscape of the family home has changed, according to Michael Yaraghi, owner and president of Safavieh, a home and design furnishings brand that has 12 locations across the tri-state area including four storefronts on Long Island. “I’m responsible for merchandising and lifestyle furniture that we are introducing in Port Washington,” said Yaraghi. “It is all about relaxed living and a more organic indoor/outdoor concept where people can enjoy and outside lifestyle inside their home.” The brand’s new design reflects the current times as people’s lifestyles have changed. According to Yaraghi, gone is the formal living and dining room.
jfauci@antonmediagroup.com
“That formal living concept doesn’t work anymore because most of the homes these days are open concept,” he said. “People have more access to the area of the home than they actually use. It is no longer in the style of our grandfathers.” The new line features performance fabrics that are durable and easy to clean, perfect for families with children and pets. Many customers want to live a more relaxed life and the style of their homes are beginning to reflect that.
(Photos courtesy of Safavieh)
“When people come into our showroom, they see how we create certain things inside the home and how great it can be to combine different materials like stone and wood or mix fabrics,” said Yaraghi, adding that his favorite piece of furniture is the sectional due to its comfort and deep seating. “You have options of turning it into a day bed and the seats move back and forth, so it is very functional and not just a piece of furniture.” The new line debuts Nov. 1, at the Port Washington showroom, located at 2 Channel Dr. For more information, call 516945-3868 or visit www.safaviehhome.com.

ELECTION COVERAGE
Suozzi’s Appetite For Reelection BY STEVE MOSCO
DeBono Looks To Strengthen Middle Class BY BETSY ABRAHAM
smosco@antonmediagroup.com
babraham@antonmediagroup.com
Congressman Tom Suozzi still remembers how it felt to lose his reelection bid for county executive in 2009— and it’s a feeling that keeps his urgency level high as he seeks to keep his seat in the Third Congressional District. An ardent believer in bipartisan solutions to the biggest problems facing the state—and the country— Suozzi is a member of the Problem Solver’s Caucus in Congress, which is comprised of 24 Democrats and 24 Republicans all with the shared vision of rising against the partisan tide that seems to engulf every level of government. “I was happily surprised at the talent level in Washington, but I was unhappily surprised at how hard it is to get something put on the floor,” said Suozzi. “In the Problem Solver’s Caucus, we have Democrats and Republicans working to find common ground and we’ve been able to build a lot of trust between members.” As part of the caucus, Suozzi has helped negotiate immigration reform based on compromise, including stronger border security and regularizing the 11 million undocumented persons currently in America. In this arena, Suozzi cosponsored more than 10 bills that address responsible immigration reform, including the Dream Act of 2017, the Keep Families Together Act and the Freedom of Religion Act. Reaching across the aisle has garnered Suozzi an array of endorsements for this election, including the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Communications Workers of America, Working Families, the Nassau and Suffolk County Police Benevolent Associations and more. “There are a lot of smart, reasonable, good-hearted people in Congress, but there are structural problems that exist,” he said. “There are 435 seats in Congress and 380 of them are safe seats. Congress has a 15 percent approval rating, but 90 percent of them get reelected. What is going on?” Therein lies the importance this year in Democrats taking back some of the seats, according to Suozzi.
Dan DeBono is no stranger to taking on a challenge. The Navy SEAL served in the U.S. Navy during the Gulf War and Bosnia, graduated with High Honors from the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago and runs a small investment and advisory business in New York. But now, the Syosset native and Town of Huntington Republican Committee Committeeman takes on his latest challenge: vying for New York’s Third Congressional District seat. For DeBono, the run for Congress was just one more step in a lifelong call to service. “I love my country and was raised to fight for my country unconditionally and that’s how I live,” the Northport resident said. “People want better jobs and incomes and want back their American dream. And I’d like to help.” A lifelong Long Islander, DeBono said he saw a “leadership vacuum,” with too many people struggling to afford life on Long Island. “I see too many people leaving Long Island simply because they can’t afford to live here, or their children are leaving because they can’t put together the pieces of a life here in terms of buying a house, starting a family and living comfortably,” DeBono noted. “I really would like to strengthen the middle-class economy.” If elected, DeBono hopes to strengthen the middle-class economy and wages through increasing competition, fostering small business growth and deregulation. “My focus is anti-trust and making sure there’s enough competition for our labor,” he said. “We have to even the playing field between small business and giant business.” Too many industries have become highly concentrated oligopolies, DeBono notes, comparing the wireless industry, which has less than a handful of companies to the barbershop industry, which has tens of thousands of businesses. “The output of that is there’s a lack of competition and lack of employment opportunities,” he said. “There’s not enough employers. They’ve all
“We all learn in school about the checks and balances system and how Congress is supposed to be a check on the president. But right now, the Republicans cannot be a check on the president,” said Suozzi. “I’ll work with anybody. Holding the president accountable doesn’t mean saying ‘no’ to everything. I’m interested in what is good for my constituents.” One particular instance in which Suozzi worked with both sides is when the president wanted to cut money from the Long Island Sound cleanup. Instead of seeing money cut, they got the money doubled and this year increased it by another $4 million. Suozzi’s other environmental achievements include securing $34 million for the remediation of the Navy/Grumman plume in Bethpage, requiring the Comptroller General to submit a report to Congress on the future of Plum Island and cosponsoring dozens of pieces of legislation to protect wildlife, air, land and water. Addressing gun violence, Suozzi has cosponsored 16 bills that address common sense gun reform, while cohosting a Rally to End Gun Violence with students form across the island. And in terms of meeting with the people in his district, Suozzi has held about 25 town hall-type forums with close to 200 attendees at each meeting. Suozzi believes this shows that a majority of people are hungry for a change in the way elected officials conduct their politics. “The biggest concern voters have is that they are sick of everyone fighting with each other,” he said. “We have to work together. It takes hard work, but it is work that I am willing to do.”
combined. That’s killed us.” He hopes to turn the Third Congressional District into a national leader for business start-ups and a magnet for corporate employers and entrepreneurs by reducing taxes for residents and small businesses and making significant infrastructure improvements. It’s a lofty task and though the House currently holds a Republican-majority, DeBono notes he is wiling to work with anybody, regardless of party affiliation, to bring about a stronger middle-class economy. “My entire life has been about leadership and working with people from all walks of life towards a common goal,” he said. “But...you also have to have the right goal. There’s a lot of lip service about working together, but you have to say working together for what vision. My vision is a stronger middle-class economy.” A relative newcomer to the political scene, DeBono said that campaigning has been energizing and all-encompassing. “I like meeting people and engaging with people,” DeBono said. “People are optimistic about the future, but are concerned at the same time. Their savings have gone down, taxes keep going up. They want to believe in a better future but their day-to-day is difficult.” That pathway to a better future is already being laid in D.C., said DeBono, and he believes he can help as well. “The situation we’ve found ourselves in didn’t occur overnight, so it’s not going to be solved overnight,” said DeBono. “But I believe the steps the president is taking and I will take will have a meaningful impact on people’s future.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). It’s doesn’t always work this way, but you’re going to have to expect more to get more this week. This will apply to loved ones, colleagues and you, too. Raise your standard and you’ll be amazed at what people, including you, are capable of delivering. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You’re not necessarily a rules follower; you take life on a case-by-case basis. You follow the rules that make sense and seem right. If an authority figure tells you that you can do something, or you can’t do something, you just might decide that you’re the new highest authority figure on matters affecting your life. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Some say home is where your people are. Others say it’s where you can be comfortably yourself, people or no people. Still others say home isn’t a place, it’s feeling. Your focus this week will be on doing your part to make that group of people, point on the map or feeling the very best it can be.
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
Another reason to seek new potentially lucrative directions: The first money you receive from a venture will make you so happy and proud. For the best luck, diversify in your social life as well. Friends will open your eyes to areas of life you wouldn’t have thought to explore. Also this solar return you’ll alleviate someone’s loneliness and make your own heart full in the process. The education you get in 2019 will be something you master and later teach.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). All the power and control comes from responsibility. You’ll take responsibility and then quickly recognize the relationship between action and reaction, choice and consequence. When the outcome is dissatisfying, you’ll change tactics, make a different choice and keep adjusting until the result is favorable. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Even though the benefits to making a schedule and sticking with it are obvious, it’s the spontaneous moves that will be most memorable. The beauty is that there’s room to do both the expected and the unexpected. Also, because of your playful attitude, you’ll be able to get away with quite a lot in the name of fun. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Charlie Chaplin famously said, “In the end, everything is a gag.” While you don’t feel that your situation is funny, you can see humor in parts of it. Those parts become the levity that will bring out a sunnier tone, some fun and a reason to bond with the others involved. These really are the good times. CANCER (June 22-July 22). There’s someone new on the scene that you’ll need to work with or influence to get a certain outcome. You’ll put some thought, and maybe even a little research, into the best approach. This is a matter of knowing what the others expect and exceeding those expectations. Good manners are respect personified. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Like a Rolling Stones song, time is on your side -- especially if you use it to do what you haven’t been able to fit in lately. Focus on tasks that have seemed superfluous because they appeared to benefit only you. In the long run, self-care isn’t selfish. When you feel cared for, you are better able to care for others. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The sort of people who can help you will be qualified by two things: knowledge and integrity. One without the other is either useless or dangerous. Get specific about the problem. The more you know about it, the better able you’ll be to attract the right people. Together you’ll accomplish something important. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Building always takes longer than demolition. That can be good news, depending on the situation. What needs to come down this week is an internal wall of protection that has taken you years to build. Now it’s keeping you more isolated than safe. It’s time for that wall to come down, and it can happen with one decision. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Those who try to impress everyone usually end up impressing no one. The same goes for anyone trying to please the masses. The group you’re dealing with is diverse. There is no way to make them all happy. Make yourself happy and see who smiles along with you. That’s the start of your tribe. Build from there. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Spiders taste with their feet. Snakes hear with their bellies. Cats see in the dark, and birds can see more colors than humans can. What you learn of the natural world will bring depth to daily life. To understand another species is to appreciate your humanity differently. Self-compassion increases, too.

Helen Keller National Center Praises Congressman Suozzi
H
elen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths & Adults (HKNC), a division of Helen Keller Services (HKS), has expressed its deep appreciation to Congressman Thomas Suozzi [DNY3] for securing a one million dollar increase in annual appropriations for 2019—a dramatic 31 percent increase in funding for HKNC when combined with the year before. “From day one, Tom Suozzi has been our biggest supporter,” observed HKNC Executive Director Susan Ruzenski. “He has always worked and advocated on our behalf. We were the first place he visited after his election to congress and he has delivered on every promise, before or since. Congressman Suozzi is the best champion we have and we are eternally grateful to him for his consistent, considerable support of HKNC.” Established in 1967 as an Act of
Congress, HKNC is the only national comprehensive program working exclusively with youth and adults with a combined vision and hearing loss. Prior to Congressman Suozzi’s first term in office, federal funding for HKNC had remained unchanged for 16 years, with the exception of one year. HKS President and CEO Joseph Bruno remarked, “Congressman Suozzi’s extraordinary role in championing the need for expanded HKNC services benefits deaf-blind individuals, their families, and service providers here on Long Island and across the United States. Everyone at Helen Keller Services joins me in thanking him for his steadfast commitment to our mission.” The strategic initiatives already set in motion with last year’s increase of $2.14 million will be fortified with the additional funding secured by

DEE SNIDER from page 8A this thing. I love the people involved with it, and I love the opportunity to sing this kind of stuff. It’s great.” As someone who got his start singing in his elementary school’s glee club while growing up in Baldwin, Rocktopia has really hit Snider’s musical sweet spot. “I tell folks that it’s not what they think it is, because there’s nothing like it. I ask them what they think it is and they say symphonic rock. And people will say they’ve seen that. It started with Deep Purple in the ‘70s with the London Philharmonic. But it’s not that. It’s a literal mashup of classical and classic rock with opera singers and Broadway singers and rock singers along with a rock band, a choir and an orchestra,” he said. “It’s very different. Rob says that at the beginning of the show that if all the greats in music were alive today and there was a table to sit at, you’d have Bach and Beethoven up there, but you’d also have Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury up there as well. They’d all deserve a seat at that table, and they would all respect each other because they’re all the best at what they do. They’re all talented artists and this sort of show acknowledges that.” Post-Twisted Sister, Snider has never stopped working and finding success in the oddest places. While he’s worked in other groups, such as Widowmaker and Desperado (“It was one of my proudest records but was a non-event because it came out about 30 years after it was recorded”), he’s also carved out a secondary career as a drive-time DJ (Dee Snider Radio), a reality show regular (Gone Country, Growing Up Twisted, Celebrity Wife Swap) and landed a voiceover role as Angry Jack on an episode of his old buddy Tom Kenny’s cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. Most interesting was how Snider wound up having a Christmas song he’d written as a present for his wife with no intention of putting it out somehow getting heard and recorded by Celine Dion for a 1998 holiday album.
“I wrote ‘The Magic of Christmas Day (God Bless Us Everyone)’ for my wife as a Christmas present with no intention of releasing it. Years later, the engineer who was in the studio called me and asked if I was sitting down. I said yeah and he said that Celine Dion wanted to record my Christmas song,” Snider recalled. “I asked him if she knew who wrote it. He said I haven’t told her yet, and I told him to not tell her. It would be like Satan wrote that Christmas song. It’s on These Are Special Times, the biggest selling holiday record in history. I think it sold 14 million copies. We call our house, ‘The House That Celine Built.’ It was on Rosie O’Donnell’s Christmas album, which went platinum. It’s one of those songs that I bet will make me more money than anything else that I’ve ever done.” Most surprising has been the unexpected success of Snider’s latest album, For the Love of Metal. Originally recorded on a dare by Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta, who challenged Snider to record a contemporary heavy metal record, the Jasta-produced record has taken on a life of its own. With the help of younger musicians who come from the ranks of Avenged Sevenfold, Seven Finger Death Punch and Bring Me the Horizon, this collection of original songs has blown up on Spotify, crashed onto the Billboard Top 20 and even found the sexuagenarian rocker recently playing before a crowd of 40,000 in Mexico on the strength of the new album. There is even talk of a potential Grammy nomination for Metal Album of the Year. “They were singing half the new album, and it just came out four months ago,” Snider said with incredulity. “But this was all about inspiration, which is why it’s called For the Love of Metal. Even as egotistical as I am, I was still taken aback by this outpouring from the community. Even now. I’ve done records before with this one—but old fans and new fans now have something they can sink their teeth into. Dee is back.”

Kingfish Swims Home Chef Tom Schaudel brings high-end seafood to the Vanderbilt BY BETSY ABRAHAM BABRAHAM@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
W
alking into the Vanderbilt’s gorgeous lobby—outfitted with a hand-blown glass chandelier, glass and bronze entry table and custom-patterned marble floor under a 22-foot high rotunda—is enough to prompt guests to speak in hushed whispers, a volume usually suited for museums or libraries. But the party begins in Kingfish, the luxury apartment complex’s signature fine-dining restaurant, which opened to the public in July. Don’t be mistaken—the upscale eatery isn’t rowdy—rather, it’s a place where executive chef and kitchen veteran Tom Schaudel wants guests to settle in.
“We want it to feel like that comfortable pair of sneakers or jeans that just fit right for some reason. We want people to feel that way about the restaurant,” said Schaudel, a Carle Place native. “You want to come down and have a big meal and big bottle of wine? Go ahead. You want to have a soda and oysters? Go ahead and do that too.” The expansive 150-seat restaurant and seasonal patio leaves plenty of space for diners to get comfortable as they enjoy a plate or two or even three of what Schaudel calls “Atlantic Rim” cuisine. The airy and contemporary restaurant has all the makings and offerings of an oyster bar, while avoiding pretension and unapproachable cuisine. What diners can expect is seafood—fresh, delicious, seafood. Underwater offerings are Schaudel’s specialty; the Long Island dining icon

has owned or been the driving force behind some of the area’s most successful restaurants, and is currently the chef/owner of A Lure Chowder House and Osteria in Southold as well as Be Ju Shashimi Bar in Melville. At Kingfish, that passion for seafood is obvious, with a variety of fish and oyster options on the menu. Oysters (locally grown specially for Schaudel) are served freshly shucked, fried in a salad or grilled on the shell, while lobster makes glorious appearances on both the knuckle sandwich and grilled roll. Daily fish specials—served both grilled or under the creative inclinations of the chef—vary by season but diners can always rely on finding satisfaction in the grilled yellowfin tuna (served alongside warm fingerling potato salad, green

Those looking to blend the best of two worlds should try the black linguini, a delightful marriage of pasta with octopus and calamari, or the bucatini, served with shrimp and crab under a lobster cream sauce. And landlubbers need not fear: Kingfish offers a flavorful grilled sirloin that puts most steakhouses to shame, as well as a variety of salads and sandwiches. On the small plates/appetizers menu, the savory grilled Colorado ribs, mussels steamed with Thai red curry, and grilled octopus all find themselves as worthy contenders for a first course. Meals end on a sweet note with the cinnamon apple crisp, served in a skillet with a healthy scoop
of vanilla gelato, or the Rocky Road bar, a delightful conglomeration of chocolate cake, marshmallow, wet walnuts and triple chocolate gelato. Rounding out the experience is an ample wine and beer list, as well as creative cocktails, such as the Vanderbilt (Maker’s Mark, orange marmalade, solerno, tangerine juice and egg whites) and the Spice and Brine (Ketel One, pepperoncini juice and a smoked blue cheese stuffed banana pepper). With an exceptional menu, excellent service and a warm ambiance, diners will have no problem feeling at home at Kingfish. Kingfish is located at 990 Corporate Dr., Westbury. or decades, sports and video games have been the perfect pairing for those who love the idea of competing in the comfort of your home in front of a computer screen or TV. At the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, the history of the relationship is put on display in the new exhibit “A Whole Different Ball Game. “Jason [Eppink] and I noticed that the 60th anniversary of the game Tennis For Two, a really old analog computer game that is the center of our exhibition, was coming up, said John Sharp, one of the curators of the show along with Eppink. “We wanted to do the exhibit solely on Tennis For Two but Jason, rightly, was like ‘You know, I’m not sure if anyone wants to come in and play forty different video game versions of tennis.’ So we took a step back and opened it up. The display, which is sponsored by
game developer Psyonix Inc., provides patrons the chance to play more than 40 different sports video games that span over six decades. In addition to Tennis For Two, the world’s first video game, games on display includes those popular in the 1970s and ’80s, such as Magnavox Odyssey and Atari Football, to newer games that have been embraced in the e-sports circuit, such as Fortnite and Psyonix’s own Rocket League. “It really runs the gamut, said Sharp. “There’s everything from a foosball table in the middle of the exhibit to the home version of Pong. We have a range of games from classic to contemporary, and all of them are ranged into thematic groupings One of the many sections of the exhibit includes a dedication to sports games that use motion controls, which has become most popular in recent years. Nintendo consoles, such as the Wii and the Switch, as well as the Playstation’s EyeToy and Xbox’s Kinect, have all embraced the idea of having players mimic

around this time last year that we started going about trying to collect everything,” said Sharp. “Jason and I were working off of a list of about 100 games, and we were working on it until the last minute.” The show also examines the impact of sports on the growth of the gaming industry as a whole. It explores the use of sports statistics in games, how broadcasts of sports and video game are similar, and how e-sport competitions are on the rise. “The main ways we interact with sports in general is through television and the news media,” said Sharp. “Sports video games are really just an extension of that, and it’s another way we can interact with sports as a whole. We took that as our jumping off point in asking what happens when you bring the two together.” The exhibit is on display at the museum from now until March 10, 2019. real life while playing the game. “One of the main games in this section is Wii Sports,” said Sharp. “Nintendo has always had a great way of introducing how a console works through its games, and sports just naturally worked. The driving factor beyond these [motion control] movements is to get people more engaged. Usually, we’re just sitting, and there was an interest in what could make players more involved. Sports were a natural place to look.” The most challenging part of the exhibit for Sharp, a professor at Parson’s School of Design, was gathering all the games that he could get his hands on. In addition to hunting down the games themselves, the curators tried to find the authenic specs that the games were played on as well, from the displays to the adapters. It took a lot of phone calls and searches on eBay for them to form the exhibit that they have. “We first thought of the idea to do the show about two years ago, and it was
