Walking The Beat

With Vanessa Ray

BY ANTHONY MURRAY AMURRAY@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

A

t a young age growing up in Livermore, California, Vanessa Ray discovered that performing was in her blood when her mother took her to Livermore High School to see a production of The Music Man. After getting bit by the acting bug, Ray, along with her brother, had roles in the musical Oliver!, which ultimately catapulted her into the world of show business. Having starred in various Broadway and television shows, such as Pretty Little Liars, Suits, As the World Turns and Damages, Ray currently co-stars in the CBS crime drama Blue Bloods as police officer Edit “Eddie” Janko. She describes her character as an honest, bright, tough and confident cop who has faced a lot of adversity in her life. The police procedural, which is currently in its ninth season, follows the Reagans, an IrishCatholic multi-generational family of cops who are dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan, who is portrayed by Magnum P.I. himself, Tom Selleck, is the city’s police commissioner who runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family. Soon to be a Reagan herself, Eddie got engaged to Jamie Reagan

Will Estes and Vanessa Ray on the set of Blue Bloods. (Photos Courtesy of CBS) (portrayed by Will Estes) in last season’s finale. Dubbed by fans of the show as “Jamko,” Eddie and Jamie, who were partners in the same police precinct, hadn’t always had the best of relationships, which was sometimes plagued by jealousy and mixed emotions. “I think it’s really complicated, with myself included, as a fan of this couple,” explained Ray. “There’s a lot of learning curves

and lot of figuring out what their relationship looks like. I think it’s more of a struggle than they were anticipating. That’s something that I read a lot when I get the scripts and say ‘Oh man, this is hard for them.’ It’s a lot harder for them than I think we all thought. They’ve loved each other for all these years, they’re finally together and now the fun begins, but it’s sort of where the real work has begun for

them in terms of their relationship instead of their actual work and family unit.” According to Ray, viewers should brace themselves this season for a lot more of the same “Jamko” that they love, but also a lot more grit and struggles than they anticipated and what everyone’s been prepared for.

Could your emotions be controlling your investment decisions?

BLUE from page 3A A relative outsider to the Reagan family, which is known for having traditional Sunday family dinners, Ray said that the cast is like family to one another. “Coming into this very established family, they have a laundry list of inside jokes and they really wanted to catch me up on all of them,” Ray said affectionately. “It’s a very playful room. I was obviously intimidated and nervous the first couple of times going to family dinner, but I immediately felt welcomed. There really is such a family aspect to it. I’m really fortunate to get to sit with Bridget [Moynahan], who is like the big sister I’ve always wanted.” Sitting at that family dinner table is not only Selleck, but legendary actor Len Cariou, who Ray said makes her speechless at times. “I’ve been an enormous fan of Len Cariou from Sweeney Todd,” she said. “To be totally honest, I am so nervous around Len that I sometimes can’t even find my words because I’ve admired his work for so long…I don’t even think he knows that.” Playing a police officer on television can also be physically demanding, something for which Ray said she had to train like an officer when she initially got the role of Eddie. “Our producer, James Niciforo, who is the unsung hero of our show, took Marisa [Ramirez], Will [Estes] and I to a shooting range,” said Ray. “It was the first time I ever shot a gun since I didn’t really grow up with guns. did some SWAT-type training and learned how to clear a room. I have so much respect for police officers with the amount of gear that they’re wearing on a day-to-day basis and being in such great physical shape.” In the current era of the #MeToo Movement, Blue Bloods was ahead of its time when it was revealed that Eddie was sexually assaulted while out on a date—feeling ashamed to report it in fear of what her fellow officers would think of her if they found out. “It definitely was ahead of its time because it really talked about matters that are very much in the press right now,” explained Ray. “That was an episode that was really important to the director Dave Barrett and myself. We worked very closely together on that episode. I’m proud of that, and I’m very proud of the fact that on our show we talk very openly about [sexual assault].” In order to make sure that what is being portrayed on television is accurate to that of a real life police officer, the show’s writers consult a lot with their police tech consultants and are always running things by them, Ray revealed. “So many of our storylines are pulled straight from experiences from law enforcement,” said Ray. “We’re not a ripped-from-the-headlines kind of show. We’re definitely more of a personal experience kind of show. We tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may. We don’t tell you what to think.” Blue Bloods airs on CBS Friday nights at 10 p.m.

50 Years Of Hot Wheels A BY JENNIFER FAUCI

h, Hot Wheels. Miniature models of actual cars in a scaled down version of the real deal. My own Hot Wheels moment was on my 16th birthday. I remember being called down before dinner to “look at something in the driveway.” To a newly licensed 16-year-old, there aren’t many indications as to what such a surprise could be. Think again. I went outside to find a miniature car in the driveway, complete with a small bow. While I did get a car eight months later, my parents found great comic relief in Hot Wheels, much to my dismay. This year, the brand celebrates its 50th birthday. That’s five decades of die-cast toy cars, thanks to American toy maker Mattel, the primary competitor of Matchbox until 1997, when Mattel bought Tyco Toys, then owner of Matchbox. In 1968, Hot Wheels released “The Sweet Sixteen,” the first production line for the year, which included the Beatnik Bandit, Custom El Dorado, Custom Camaro, Custom Corvette, Custom Fleetside, Deora, Custom Mustang, Custom T-Bird, Hot Heap, Ford J-Car, Custom Cougar, Custom Firebird, Custom Barracuda, Python (also known as Cheetah), Silhouette and Custom

Volkswagen. In addition to the wildly popular cars themselves, Mattel also produced a brightly colored orange racing track set, which was sold separately. Although Hot Wheels were originally intended for children and teens, they have become popular collectors items among adults. The tiny cars were designed by a series of automotive industry leaders as well, with the original set made by Elliot Handler. In May of 1968, Harry Bentley Bradley contributed his designs for 11 of the cars. The 1970s introduced the Snake and the Mongoose—notably drag racing’s first major non-automotive corporate sponsor—as well as the first Silver Series, which included the Boss Hoss, the Heavy Chevy and the King ‘Kuda cars, all obtained through a mail-in offer that included a membership to the Hot Wheels Club. The late 1970s to ’80s brought about two things: color and controversy. In 1981, Hot Ones wheels were introduced with gold-painted hubs, thinner axles for speed, and additional suspension than other Hot Wheels cars. Then came Ultra Hot Wheels, with even more speed improvements, followed by Thermal Color Change paint, allowing the cars to change color on

DINING

Divine Province Cheng Du dances with Szechuan flames

BY STEVE MOSCO SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

T

he flavor profile of Chengdu, the capitol of China’s Sichuan Province, has been creeping westward for the better part of the last 20 years. Boiling over with Szechuan cuisine at its best, the city is the Far East’s cradle of fiery foods like hot pots—long hot peppers and cumin-crusted meats—and Long Island recently gained another authentically Szechuan-style Chinese restaurant with Cheng Du in Franklin Square. Situated in an expansive space on bustling Hempstead Turnpike near Franklin Avenue, Cheng Du’s menu gathers selections from the Sichuan Province, while also reaching into other regions for tastes from Taiwan, Japan and Americanized Chinese food. It’s all part of a solid effort by the owners to cater to a wide spectrum of tastes, while also shining a spicy light on food that might be a tad adventurous for some eaters.

The 20-or-so items on the Americanized menu features all the favorites—General Tso’s Chicken, pepper steak, sweet and sour chicken, etc.—but with a talented kitchen staff possessing an obvious mastery of their craft, delving deeper into the rest of the menu is crucial. Chengdustyle means heat—that ethereal, other-worldly,

20181109_XAL_LNW_PG00-1:23November5,2018

mouth-numbing heat born of peppercorns, dried peppers and fermentation. And the restaurant’s Chengdu-style definitely conveys that philosophy. First there’s all-encompassing hot pot. A bubbling cauldron of oils and peppers, served in a sizzling mini-wok with black mushrooms, bamboo shoots and plenty of peppercorns. Additional proteins are up to the eater and include pork, chicken, tofu, beef, fish, lamb, shrimp and pork intestines. Much of the same ingredients show up in another fiery option, the dry-pepper fried dishes and hot sauce flavor dishes. But a major standout on the Chengdu-style menu is the cumin flavor section, particularly the cumin-crusted beef stir fry with bell peppers, dry peppers, long hot peppers and onions. Even before tasting, the aromatic essence fully engulfs the senses from first whiff. The interesting thing about spicy food is the addictive nature of the burn—it’s truly a “hurts so good” scenario—and that certainly is the case with the cumin beef. The mouth goes numb, the brow begins to sweat and before you know it, you’ve completely devoured every morsel on the dish. And it’s not just the spiciness of the dish. The texture is exquisitely pleasing, as the cumin crust alters the structure of the meat and the peppers and onions maintain a satisfying crunch. Transitioning into other regional cuisine, Cheng Du offers the Taiwanese Three Cup Chicken. Named for the traditional use of three cups of sauce (soy, rice wine and sesame oil) in the recipe, the dish is deeply flavorful and dotted with basil and whole cloves of garlic. Don’t be turned off by the those big garlic chunks—the cooking process

renders the garlic soft and gentle, with a roasted butteriness that permeates the dish. Other Chef’s Special dishes include Lion Head Meatballs, Hot & Spicy Grilled Fish, honey walnut shrimp and braised pork belly. Cheng Du also boasts an authentic dim sum menu with soup dumplings, Taiwanese buns, scallion pancakes and the absolute standout, the handmade dumplings. Painstakingly crafted by the chef, the sticky, doughy dumplings pockets of mouth-bliss with ingredients to match. The vegetable versions in particular came highly recommended by the chef and for good reason— for they contain much more than just the mushy cabbage you see at most Chinese establishments, opting instead for a variety of rough-chopped, fresh vegetables. It’s a time-consuming preparation that is well worth the wait. And finally, the humble, yet impossibly grand, noodle. Cheng Du takes great care of its noodles with an array of cold and hot dishes, some spicy,

some more restrained. The finest among them might be the Dan Dan Noodles with minced pork. Smooth with a peanut-foward spicy sauce, the noodles possess a silky and bouncy texture that is matched perfectly with the grit of the minced pork, while the taste is at once sweet, salty and savory, surrounded by an earthy umami. There is also a respectable sushi menu that hits all the right notes without being overwhelmingly abundant in choices. There are regular and hand rolls, along with special rolls and sushi entrées. Meanwhile, the Monday through Friday lunch special is hard to beat with an array of options, all with choice of soup, for around $8. Any write up for Cheng Du Chinese Restaurant would not be complete without a mention of the inventive cocktails—such as the Mulholland Drive, a twisted, mind-altering drink containing a secret blend of ingredients and named after the surrealist movie of the same name. Cheng Du also mixes cocktails like Blue Velvet, their take on a margarita,

as well as the Red Turtle, a heady mix with campari. Cheng Du is exactly the place if you want Chinese comfort food, but also want to step out of the white take out box and try something authentic. However, Hot Wheels saw what the new model of Corvette was going to look like before GM’s official unveiling, leading the brand to design a die cast version of the 1984 Corvette. Safe Center Gala Honors Givers BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF editorial@antonmediagroup.com

The Safe Center LI, an advocate for survivors of abuse and neglect, held its annual gala and largest fundraising event of the year on Oct. 18, honoring the people who have dutifully supported the center’s mission—to help people throughout the community to find a safe place. Honorees at the Every Home A Safe Home gala included Anton Media Group publisher Angela Susan Anton, community activist and board member Lillian McCormick and board member and plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Jacono. According to the center’s executive director Cynthia Scott, each honoree was lauded for individual selfless contributions to the center’s cause.

“When we started here in 2015, one of the things we desperately needed because of budget restrictions was the donation of advertising,” said Scott. “Angela has provided us with advertising for up to three events per year, and that is incredibly generous.” Community activist and advocate for human rights, Lillian McCormick, 93, has been instrumental in organizing the community to help establish the first domestic violence shelter on Long Island in Manhasset in the back of a church. “She filled cots with people who needed a safe place back when no one was doing that and it took an extreme act of courageousness on her part to take that risk to help people,” said Scott. “It has inspired so much of what we do. That’s just the kind of lady she is.”

What The World Needs Now Is A Big Hug

F

rom my personal experience, New Yorkers do not easily engage with total strangers. We approach some new face with great caution until we know for sure that it is safe to say “hello.” It is for that reason that I share a story that reflects what America needs now more than ever. It is fresh in my mind because it happened only a few short days ago. My wife Suzan elected to have some serious surgery at a respected hospital. The operation commenced late in the day and it wasn’t until early evening that she was out of the recovery room. As this was one of her first trips to a hospital in more than 25 years, I shared her

INSIDE POLITICS Jerry Kremer anxiety, hoping nothing would go wrong. Somewhere around 11 p.m. it was time to leave and as I approached the elevator, I spotted a mother and daughter who were waiting

as well. This total stranger took one look at me and said, “do you know what you could use? A big hug.” I was taken aback and said “if it’s OK with your daughter, I will take it.” She proceeded to give me the biggest and strongest hug that I could have ever hoped for. And after a brief thank you, she disappeared into the city night. Somehow, after wrestling with the news of 14 bombs being sent to prominent Americans and the senseless slaughter of 11 people, I thought that now more than ever our country needs a big hug from someone in a position to be our comforter-in-chief. I want to believe that out

there in the future some person, man or woman, someday will fulfill that role of providing us with a kind word, a soothing thought and some grand gesture that will make all Americans feel a little better in times of great distress. Regrettably, our current President Donald Trump has never been able to rise to the occasion when we were hurting as a nation. His reaction to the Charlottesville tragedy was met with “there are good persons on both sides.” His suggestion that the recent synagogue shooting could have been avoided if there was an armed security guard on the premises was straight from the NRA handbook. Our media has shown

the entire world examples of how presidents Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama were able to soothe the sorrow of so many broken hearts with words of meaningful comfort. Sadly, this president doesn’t possess the empathy that is desperately needed at this time to heal a wounded nation. I hope that at some point in time a person will emerge, be they a Democrat or a Republican, to give us that big hug that we all so desperately need. THEATER FEATURE

A Night At The Theater

Richard Greenberg’s Long Island memory play, The Babylon Line is coming to Queens, courtesy of the Douglaston Community Theatre. The Tony Award-winning playwright’s perceptive and humorous dialogue have made his work destined to be read and performed to generations to come. When Aaron, a 38-year-old writer from Greenwich Village, becomes painfully aware of his failures as an artist, his desperation for a job forces him to commute along the Babylon Line to Levittown to teach. What awaits him is a classroom of unwilling students, all of whom have yet to set pen to paper. Over the course of the semester, Aaron’s adult pupils write increasingly more honest life accounts and stories. A particularly bold and troubled student, Joan, strikes up a rapport with Aaron that threatens

to become something more, as the pair bond over their failing marriages and creative frustrations. In the end, we observe the life-changing effects of artistic expression as Greenberg maps out the rest of each of the characters’ lives, full of triumphs and newfound joy that can be traced back directly to those few weeks in a classroom in 1967. Show times are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. The performance will take place at Zion Episcopal Church, located at 243-01 Northern Blvd., Douglaston, Queens. The cost is $17-$19. For more information and tickets, call 718482-3332 or email dougcommthtr@ gmail.com. —Anton Media Group

Singas Announces First Elder Abuse Multi-Disciplinary Team On Long Island Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas recently announced the creation of Long Island’s first Elder Abuse Multi-Disciplinary Team. The team, consisting of 15 agencies and individuals, will tackle Nassau County’s most complex elder abuse cases. Nassau County is home to approximately 220,000 people more than 65 years of age and is projected to have more than 277,000 by 2025, according to the New York State Office for the Aging. Through monthly, two-hour meetings, scheduled to begin in January 2019, the MDT will discuss cases and develop a plan to reduce the risk of abuse and provide services for the victim. The team consists of professionals from Adult Protective Services, Office for the Aging, law enforcement, health care, non-profit social services, financial services, and civil legal services. Cases will be referred from various agencies and screened by the MDT coordinator before being presented to the team. “Elder abuse cases present complex challenges that require a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary approach,” said Singas. “As our Elder Abuse Unit continues its outstanding work to hold offenders accountable, this innovative new team will collaborate to ensure that seniors victimized by these despicable crimes receive the care and support they need to live their lives safely and with the dignity they deserve.” County Executive Laura Curran said: “Nassau County is committed to ending elder abuse of all forms, be it physical, sexual, neglectful, exploitation or abandonment. Thank you to District Attorney Singas and her team for the creation of the Long Island’s First Elder Abuse Multi-Disciplinary

Team. This a tremendous step toward ensuring the well-being of Nassau County’s vulnerable adults.” Commissioner of Police Patrick Ryder said: “The creation of the Elder Abuse Multi-Disciplinary Team is a positive step to protecting our seniors who are our parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and friends. A cohesive multi-agency approach will greatly benefit all at risk when an advocate is needed. Our seniors should always be treated with the respect and honor that they deserve and this program will greatly assist this function.” Cynthia Scott, Executive Director of The Safe Center LI said, “The Safe Center is pleased to be part of the Nassau County Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Team. This is a vulnerable population that often falls prey to victimization. We appreciate the opportunity to be part of this multidisciplinary process and to assist with the protection and support

they deserve.” Elder abuse is a hidden crime and takes on many forms that can include physical, emotional and sexual abuse; neglect and financial exploitation. In elder abuse cases, the perpetrator is often well-known to the victim. The common profile of an offender is an adult child, grandchild, or other relative who is living with their aging parent or relative. Typically, these offenders are unemployed or underemployed, have mental health or substance abuse issues, and they rely on their older parent or relative for financial support and housing. Victims of elder abuse often do not want their loved ones arrested and prosecuted, but they want help for the offender and for the abuse to stop. Assistant District Attorney Arlene Markarian, Chief of the NCDA’s Elder Abuse Unit, organized the MDT. The Elder Abuse Unit, formed in November 2016, focuses on physical abuse and neglect of older victims by someone who is in a familial or other trusting relationship with them. The unit also coordinates with the Financial Crimes Bureau to support the elderly victims of financial exploitation. If you are an older adult who has been abused or someone you know is in trouble, call the NCDA’s confidential tip line at 516-571-7755. The NCDA welcomes the following agencies and individuals to the Nassau County Elder Abuse MultiDisciplinary Team: Jill Corriss, Adult Victim Advocate, The Safe Center LI; Vickie Curran, Senior Investigative Counsel, Financial Crimes Bureau of the Nassau County District

of two sons in the service, who admired the group’s mission. “Taking the sweet and tender love notes that are coming from husbands, brothers, sons and boyfriends and putting it in as something as iconic as a Vera Bradley zip ID just makes perfect sense,” said DiPuccio. “It’s something these women can treasure. It’s in their handbag so they see it all the time. I’ve had my son’s first note that he sent me

from Iraq folded in my wallet for the last 10 years.” FCH was founded by Vickie Durfee, a military mom from Rochester striving to bridge the gap between America’s heroes deployed overseas and their own heroes back home through handwritten love notes and holiday gift boxes. Based out of Henrietta, NY, the organization has been recognized twice by Joining Forces, the Obama Administration’s initiative to strengthen military families nationwide. “It’s a group that just touches your heart,” said Brady. “This one donation is just a small way that you can give back, but it’s got the biggest impact. The impact of this little note would brighten anyone’s day.” Since 2007, the group has sent out over 20,500 notes and gift boxes from deployed service members to their loved ones all over the world. Though the Veteran’s Day partnership will only run through the end of the holiday weekend, Brady hopes that this is not the last time Vera Bradley will celebrate FCH’s cause. She notes that she would like the store to partner with FCH again in the spring, around Mother’s Day. “Our full intention is to grow this organization,” said Brady. “It started with just one store, and now it has spread throughout the whole district, and I hope that eventually it’ll be in all of our stores.”

era Bradley at Roosevelt Field Mall will be joining all district locations in the company’s second annual Veteran’s Day Weekend partnership with Full Circle Home (FCH), a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting deployed service members with their loved ones. From Saturday, Nov. 10, through Monday, Nov. 12, customers will be given the opportunity to purchase and donate a zip ID case. This ID case will make its way to military bases and hospitals through FCH, where volunteers will assist soldiers in writing a heartfelt, handwritten note to a family member of their choosing. This note will be placed inside the ID case and, after being packaged alongside tissues and other donated gifts, will be mailed to loved ones across the country to be received during the holiday season or on Mother’s Day. In return for their generosity, participating customers will receive 15 percent off of their entire Vera Bradley purchase. Roosevelt Field store manager Pat Brady said that it is FCH’s powerful intentions and universal appeal that resulted in a successful first partnership last year. “You’d be surprised as to how

many people walk through the door that you don’t realize their connection to the cause,” said Brady. “Even with past military. Vietnam veterans all have children and grandchildren now who remember receiving these letters at one point in their life. It keeps that connection strong between the family and the soldier, and that’s really important.” The organization was introduced to Vera Bradley by Eastview store manager Donna DiPuccio, a mother

While on watch Seaman Garofalo spent many hours keeping the vessel safe from the threat of attack from Japanese warships, torpedos and fighter planes. Garofalo learned of the end of the war while on the ATA 198 towing a disabled vessel across the wide Pacific. Garofalo was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 16, 1946, promptly joined the reserves and continued his naval service for an additional three years. During his time in the naval service, he received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal. Supervisor Judi Bosworth is joined by Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, Town Board members Anna Kaplan, Peter Zuckerman, Angelo Ferrara, Dina De Giorgio and Lee Seeman and members of the Town’s Veterans Advisory Committee as they announce the arrival of the Northport Medical Center’s Mobile van at Clinton G. Martin Park three days a week. G. Martin Park three days a week. U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, who could not be present for the ceremony, was also a tremendous advocate in getting the van placed in North Hempstead. The presence of the mobile van comes after Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Veterans Advisory

Committee and federal representatives Schumer, Rice and Suozzi strongly advocated for the unit to be in place, while a more permanent clinic could be established within North Hempstead’s borders. Schumer was the first to suggest the van be placed in North Hempstead

until the town is able to get a permanent clinic. Rice met with the Veterans Advisory Committee and listened to requests for a committee for a community-based outpatient clinic. Town officials and members of the Veterans Advisory Committee gathered thousands of signatures

h Hempstead Weekly on petitions and wrote hundreds of letters calling for a mobile health care unit to be placed with frequency in North Hempstead and are also asking that a permanent Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) for veterans be established somewhere in the town. “Having the mobile unit here with frequency will have a tremendous positive impact for our local veterans,” said Bosworth. “We are so grateful to the Northport VA’s Medical Center and federal representatives for being great teammates in making this a reality.” “The case to establish this mobile vet center in North Hempstead was compelling given the critical mass of veterans here who served to preserve this country’s freedom,” said Schumer. “They deserve efficient access to top-quality health care much closer to home, while we continue to make the case for a permanent Community Based Outpatient Clinic. I am encouraging local vets to pay a visit to this mobile unit for their everyday medical needs and rest a little easier in knowing that the short trip to get these kinds of services is no longer an inconvenient trek. We thank the VA for recognizing this need and heeding the call.” The Northport VA Medical Center’s Mobile Unit offers a variety of opportunities for veterans to access quality

healthcare in their communities. Some of the services offered by the mobile unit include primary health care, podiatry care and more. The van is staffed with a doctor and nursing staff. “No veteran should ever go without the care they need simply because of where they live,” said Rice. “But right now, veterans in North Hempstead are over an hour away from the closest VA facility. For elderly veterans, veterans with families and jobs or veterans without access to a car, this trip can be nearly impossible to make on a regular basis. This mobile unit will be a critical resource for the veterans in this community and it brings us one step closer to getting them the high-quality health care they need and deserve.” “We are so grateful to our veterans for their service and it’s our responsibility to make sure that they have medical care as close to home as possible,” said the Bosworth. “The arrival of the mobile unit, as well as the continued push for a more permanent CBOC, are steps in the right direction. I thanks our federal representatives for their interest, advocacy and dedication to our veterans on this important issue.” For more information, call the town’s 311 call center. —Submitted by the Town of North Hempstead

Giving Veterans A Reason To Smile Dental365 to provide free dental services to military veterans

T

here are more than 20 million veterans across the United States with less than 15 percent qualifying for dental care. To help bridge this gap, Dental365 will be hosting a day of free dental services for all military veterans on Sunday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at participating locations. Currently, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) only provides dental benefits to veterans who are classified as 100 percent disabled, have a service-connected dental condition or have been a prisoner of war. With high costs prohibiting many veterans from securing additional insurance coverage, our heroes are lacking adequate dental care which can lead to serious, even life-threatening health problems. In honor of Veterans Day, Dental365 will offer cleanings, x-rays, full-mouth debridement, comprehensive examinations and other same day services at the following locations: Bethpage, Long Island at 4216 Hempstead Tpke.; Centereach, Long Island at 1946 Middle Country

193387 C

Rd.; Tribeca, Manhattan at 19 Murray St. and Forest Hills, Queens at 7009 Austin St. Participating locations will be accepting walk-ins—alternatively, veterans can schedule an appointment for care by calling 844-636-7331. Founder and CEO of Dental365, Dr. Scott Asnis is no stranger to the

veteran community—he began his over 30-year career with a residency at the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Hospital in 1984, where he provided direct care to eligible military veterans. Asnis and the Dental365 team are honored to be providing these vital services to all our nation’s heroes in

celebration of Veterans Day. “It’s important that we continue to support our veterans after they return home,” said Asnis. “Our Veterans Day initiative is just one of the many ways Dental365 is doing our part to give back and show our appreciation of the many risks and sacrifices made by all.” Dental365 was founded on the concept of providing convenient and affordable dental care for the entire family. Through its state-of-the art facilities it offers modern dentistry services from expertly trained specialists and general dentistry practitioners. Dental365 has multiple locations throughout the New York Metropolitan area and its offices are open seven days a week, accept walk-ins and offer affordable care and financing options. Dental365 is committed to helping our communities to achieve healthy and beautiful smiles. For more information, visit www.godental365.com. —Submitted by Dental365

AN ANTON MEDIA GROUP SPECIAL

Traversing Vermont A weekend away in the Green Mountain State BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA Kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com

H

ot apple cider. Warm flannel. Fresh maple syrup. Aged cheddar. New England Americana. Blazing foliage. This is what comes to mind when I think of Vermont in the fall. I found all of it and more in the small town of Woodstock, VT, on a recent weekend trip.

THE DRIVE UP Departing Long Island in a 2019 Chevy Traverse on a Friday afternoon made the five-hour drive as enjoyable as could be. Sirius XM provided the playlist that accompanied the time-honored ombré shift from green to orange alongside the Taconic State Parkway. Roughly at the midway point to Woodstock is the historic village of Chatham, NY, which I recommend a stop at. Chatham Brewing was a great choice for dinner. The menu extends beyond the typical pub food with seasonal options and a particularly good vegetable chili, and there’s live music on the weekends. Chevy’s built-in navigation system was incredibly helpful mapping the best route to my destination, but the Traverse easily pairs with Android and Apple smartphones if Google Maps or Waze is your preference. Charging your phone is not a problem with the wireless charging tray and seven, count ’em, seven USB ports.

The car is also connected to OnStar, which is handy for more than just emergencies. OnStar is like a personal concierge that can give you restaurant recommendations or help you find the nearest rest stop by sending turn-byturn directions to your car. If you find yourself desperately in need of coffee or a bathroom break, OnStar has you covered.

Just down the road from 506 is Central Road, the “Main Street” of Woodstock. The town has a strong Stars Hollow vibe, with a tree-lined courtyard called The Green, stately brick buildings, Colonial style homes, an old church and library—and I haven’t even mentioned the independent shops and eating establishments yet. There’s a yarn shop called The Whippletree and custom jeweler called N T Ferro. Danforth Pewter offers beautiful handcrafted items and Unicorn is a magical variety store. The Yankee Book Shop is Vermont’s oldest independent bookstore. Not for nothing, but Chevy’s surround vision and backup camera made parallel parking in town a piece of cake. I wondered if strategically placed cameras could really create a virtual bird’s eye view or if the car actually came with its own personal drone. Finding the perfect souvenir is easy if you spend some time shopping around. I recommend a stop at The Village Butcher for local Vermont products like meats, cheeses and wines. Next door is F.H. Sons, a deceptively large general store that puts Walmart to shame. No visit to Woodstock is complete without a stop at The Vermont Flannel Company. The small storefront is packed with plaid shirts, hoodies, jackets, blankets, scarves, hats and the list goes on, all made from the softest brushed cotton. Take a break from shopping at Mon Vert Café for an amazing selection of coffees, teas, breakfast, lunch and bakery items. Ingredients are organic and locally sourced and there are many gluten-free options. Try the butterbeer latte if you’re lucky enough to catch this special seasonal item on the menu. Even when it’s cold, it’s never too cold for ice cream. That’s where Mountain Creamery comes in. The offerings are all homemade and use farm-fresh local ingredients. A ways down the road you’ll find the Woodstock Farmer’s Market, which is quite possibly the best place to enjoy all of Vermont’s fall flavors. Its mission is to make fantastic food accessible to everyone. Between fresh organic produce, prepared meals, specialty products, deli provisions

and coffee counter, I declare mission accomplished. Woodstock is a family-friendly destination, so if you’re bringing the kids, plan for at least a half day at Billings Farm & Museum, a nonprofit institution that highlights Vermont’s rural heritage. The 200-acre property is actually an operating dairy farm as well as an educational resource to the community. Kids will love the livestock, children’s programs, workshops, films and fascinating exhibits depicting what life on a farm was like in 1800s. Before you leave it’s essential to hit up the Dairy Bar for Vermont-made ice cream and snacks. (It’s vacation. No one is keeping track of how much ice cream you eat!) If you venture a bit further in either direction, you’ll find covered bridges in that quintessential Vermont style.

Cross the 1836 Taftsville Covered Bridge to get to Sugarbush Farm and see a working maple syrup farm. Quechee Gorge, aka “Vermont’s little Grand Canyon” is not far. Just park in the gift shop lot and walk across the bridge for the best view from above, then pop down the trail to see the gorge from the ground level.

IN SEARCH OF CHEESE Cheese is not exactly scarce in Vermont, but Grafton Village Cheese Company makes a mean cheddar that’s worth making a special trip for. Their headquarters are in Grafton, a lovely town with several artist workshops and galleries, antique shopping, a history museum, the Vermont Museum of Mining and Minerals, farms and farmers markets and access to recreation year-round. MKT Grafton is one place where you’ll find Grafton Village Cheese for sale and a lot more. This modern

country store has locally made snacks, wares and tasty sandwiches at the café. However, for the full selection of Grafton’s handmade, raw-milk cheddars, you’ll want to visit the Brattleboro retail store. On a chilly autumn day, it was such a pleasure to have heated seats and steering wheel in the Traverse. You don’t even know what a luxury this is until you have it and realize cold fingers are a thing of the past! Navigating the winding roads of Vermont once the sun goes down can be challenging, but the Traverse’s lane assist feature really does work! If you start to drift out of your lane, the car gently nudges you back into it. Between lane assist and collision alert, which alerts you when other cars are getting too close, these features are more than just convenient, they are potentially life-saving. Vermont is the ideal vacation destination from New York in the fall. I’m certain to return for beautiful scenery, engaging activities and delicious things to eat. So long for now, Vermont! ARIES (March 21-April 19). Discovering your superhero alter ego is on the agenda. Every move you make speaks to your character, so you make sure it’s saying something you like. Of course, this goes double for when no one is watching. You’ll get an unexpectedly disproportionate thrill from doing good anonymously. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You were taught many rules that have helped you live well, and you continue to follow them without question. You were also taught rules that warrant questioning. Some rules either no longer apply to you, no longer work for you, or perhaps were never good ideas to begin with. It’s time to take these rules to inquiry. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The situation isn’t ideal, but stand back and look at it from a distance and you can see that, in a weird way, a need is being met. Next, examine the need. Will its fulfillment bring you health? Is there another way to go about it? Awareness is the start of healing. Your powers of reflection are exceptional this week.

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND In the refrigerator Solution: 22 Letters

WORD FIND

This is a theme puzzle with the subject stated below. Find the listed words in the grid. (They may run in any direction but always in a straight line. Some letters are used more than once.) Ring each word as you find it and when you have completed the puzzle, there will be 22 letters left over. They spell out the alternative theme of the puzzle.

In the refrigerator Solution: 22 Letters

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Everyone who grows learns that there are unsafe aspects to life. What you believe is unsafe is part of your individuality. And what you do to counteract that is a theme this week. You’ll learn just how amazingly capable you are. You’ll also learn that something you were once afraid of no longer has power over you.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The events of the last 12 days washed over you like poetry. Some lines you got, some you wondered at, and it’s all still sinking in. Don’t worry about understanding everything. Some things are better felt than sorted. Also, it would be wrong to assume that anyone is more in the know than you are. We’re all pretenders. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You have a gift you haven’t been able to fully honor. In the past, someone neglected, minimized or took advantage of the gift, but that’s over. These are different circumstances, and besides you’re stronger. You know yourself better. Be daring. What you once thought was a flaw will be your power source. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It’s clear to all you’re the captain of your ship this week. If you want to change direction, the crew might grumble, but ultimately, you’re the one steering. Since you already have the responsibility, you may as well take advantage of the benefits that come with the role. Look to the horizon and make a judgement call. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Get a few things straight at the top of the week so you can go into it on a solid footing. For starters, longing for love is not the same as neediness. It’s not a weakness that should be hidden or numbed. On the contrary, the impulse to share, to adore and to be adored, is the soul’s wisdom reaching out. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You tip your hat to those who deserve it. It might take you a minute to see who fits the category. You have your own criteria. It’s a sliding scale situation, so that’s a bonus for the recipients of your nod. You sense that your acknowledgment matters even more than usual, and you’re right about that. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You are part wild and part domesticated. Modern wildness expresses differently from the way it’s been expressed by humans for thousands of years. As for you, you’ll veer from the typical expectations, happily break a few rules and stop worrying about making sense for a while. You need this break. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). A key relationship will come into focus. A lot of the connection works just fine, yet there’s still a part of you that hasn’t found a place in the relationship. What is it that you most want the other person to acknowledge, understand and appreciate about you? Introduce it. Give yourself a chance at full expression.

THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

It’s a thrill to discover a new thing to want. Even better, after a stint of feeling somewhat out of place, you’ll move into a feeling like you belong, this is your tribe, and you’re all in it together. The work you turn out while part of the group will be lauded. This builds relationships bonds, but not quite as well as the adversity you face together. So be glad in times easy and not so easy. In the chase of learning and love, what you catch will be delightful, though it won’t be the expected thing.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The rituals you live by are constantly evolving. The ones that suited you just fine at the top of the week may seem, at the end of the week, to be somehow out of step with who you’ve become. Experimentation is your right. You don’t need permission nor do you owe anyone an explanation. If you want to change, change!

erdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was a French Romantic artist, regarded as the leader of the French Romantic school and one of the greatest creative figures of the 19th century. Through his choice of daring compositions, a colorful palette, and bold brushwork, he set into motion a cascade of innovations that changed the course of art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents Delacroix, the first comprehensive retrospective in North America devoted to the artist. It is also the first time many of his works will be on display here. The exhibition encompasses 12 galleries and will provide an overview of the three main phases of Delacroix’s four-decade career. From his formative years dominated by a thirst for fame and freedom (1822-1834), and his exploration of historical themes (1835-1855), to the third and final phase, which follows Delacroix’s growing interest in nature

Studies of Bindings, an Oriental Jacket, and Figures after Goya (ca. 1822–26) Oil on canvas and the creative role of memory, up until his death in 1863. As Vincent Van Gogh wrote in 1885: “What I find so fine about Delacroix is precisely that he reveals the liveliness of things, and the expression and the movement that he is utterly beyond the paint.” This historic exhibition will

illuminate Delacroix’s restless imagination in all its complexity through more than 150 paintings, drawings, prints, and manuscripts—many of which have never been shown before in the United States. In addition to works from The Met collection, the exhibition will include exceptional loans from the Musée du Louvre and some 60 museums and private collections throughout Europe and North America. Among the highlights are Delacroix’s landmark works Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi (1826), The Battle of Nancy (1831), Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (1834), Medea About to Kill Her Children (1838), and The Lion Hunt (1855). “Delacroix was a transformative figure in the history of European painting, and his influence significantly shaped what we think of today as modern,” said Max Hollein, director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “This exhibition is a rare opportunity to experience the breathtaking talent and remarkable scope of one of the most creative forces of the nineteenth century.” Visitors to the exhibition will be confronted by two monumental canvases representing the poles of Delacroix’s imagination: an allegory of war, Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi (1826), and a Biblical subject, Christ in the Garden of Olives (1824–26). Having defined the scale of Delacroix’s ambition through large paintings, the exhibition then

introduces him through images of the artist emblematic of the Romantic era. This gallery will be centered on his self-portrait of about 1837. Born into a distinguished family but orphaned at age 16, Delacroix grew very close to friends and relatives, many of whom are featured in some of his most illuminating portraits. For the first time ever in the United States, a representative selection of notebooks that made up Delacroix’s handwritten journal will be displayed, on loan from the leading repository of the artist’s writings, the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, Paris. Self-Portrait From schoolboy in a Green Vest musings to mature (ca. 1837) reflections on the Oil on nature of beauty, canvas these manuscripts reveal one of the great painter-writers in the history of art, particularly in accounts of his early career. The presentation then moves to a close examination of Delacroix’s progressive mastery of materials in the 1820s—including oil paint, pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor—as he underwent formal artistic training under the prominent Neoclassical painter Pierre Narcisse Guérin. During this time, Delacroix had breakthroughs in rendering the textures and luminosity of human skin, as seen in Mademoiselle Rose (ca. 1820–23) and the multiracial model Aspasie (ca. 1824). Delacroix had a lifelong fascination with animal physiognomy. In 1828, he

studied animals at the menagerie in Paris’s Jardin des Plantes, an important center of scientific inquiry. The exhibition provides a nimble, intimate account of Delacroix’s approach to wild cats, horses and humans with a centerpiece of Young Tiger Playing with its Mother (1830), Delacroix’s masterwork in the genre. In 1832, Delacroix accompanied a diplomatic mission to Morocco. Having never traveled to Italy to experience the remnants of classical antiquity firsthand, Delacroix was captivated by what he understood as the “living antiquity” he encountered in North Africa. He drew numerous portraits of the people he met, including the never-before-exhibited Jewish Woman of Tangier and Schmareck, Tanner at Tangier (both 1832). The Met’s exhibition of Street in Meknes (1832), Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (1834), and Collision of Arab Horsemen (1833/34) will be the first time that these three works will be shown together, as the artist intended. From the 1840s onward, the artists embraced still lifes, floral compositions and scenes from Renaissance literature as evident in the seminal still life Basket of Flowers (1848–49), which underwent a yearlong treatment

A major development in Delacroix’s later work was the increased role of landscape and seascape in his artistic vision, as seen in The Shipwreck of Don Juan (1840), The Sea at Dieppe (1852), and an ensemble of studies related to his final large-scale mural project, Jacob Wrestling the Angel (1850), at the Parisian church of SaintSulpice. The exhibition is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée du Louvre, specifically Asher Miller, Associate Curator in the Department of European Paintings at The Met, in collaboration

with Sébastien Allard, Director of the Department of Paintings at the Musée du Louvre, and Côme Fabre, Curator in the Department of Paintings at the Musée du Louvre. The Maestro Of Pasta Scott Conant shares his love of Italian food

BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

S

prezzatura is a philosophy that drives Scott Conant. The Italian word means the art of nonchalance and applies to the chef for making sophisticated elegance look effortless. When Food & Wine Magazine named Conant to its “Best New Chef” list in 2004, the world began to take note. Thirteen years later, Conant is recognizable as a chef, restaurateur and cookbook author, as well as a beloved television personality on several Food Network shows. But before he became a successful chef, Conant began where many others do: washing dishes. “In my hometown of Waterbury, CT, I was a dishwasher at a family friend’s

restaurant. The first time I walked into a restaurant kitchen, I fell in love,” says Conant. “It was like walking onto a team. I could have been playing for the Yankees at that point, it didn’t matter. Just to have the camaraderie and sense of teamwork.” Although he was in the kitchen at a young age with his family, Conant began making a name for himself when he moved to New York City 27 years ago and worked for San Domenico. The restaurant had just opened and Conant had never seen Italian food presented in such a way. “It was very fancy. That’s where I was really introduced to white truffles and super high-end caviars that I didn’t necessarily associate with Italian food,” says Conant, aware that

at the time, Felidia in Manhattan and Valentine in Los Angeles were the high-end Italian restaurants in the country. “You look around now and see how much has changed. Disciples of those chefs have opened up their own restaurants. There’s these casual restaurants that use sophisticated, luxurious ingredients, so I feel like education of Italian food has changed. Nobody was making agnolotti 12 to 15 years ago but now you’d be hardpressed not to find them on restaurant menus.” In Conant’s view, the culinary landscape may have changed—even French restaurants are utilizing Italian ingredients and commodities—but the importance of pasta as a staple dish will never go out of style. Known as the Maestro of Pasta, Conant’s fresh varieties of pasta are mainstays on his menus, and he continues to elevate the simple mixture of flour, salt and egg. “I started cooking pasta years ago and I got good at it. I like creating layers of flavors and the textures involved. I like how interesting it could become,” he said. While it may seem like a simple dish to make, cooking pasta has led many at-home chefs to make mistakes the minute they boil water without salting it, a move Conant can’t understand. “It should taste like broth. It’s a low-hanging fruit so to speak,” he said of the common kitchen error. “Another is being able to cook the pasta directly in the sauce...80 to 90 percent of the way in salted water and finishing in the sauce together. That will allow the pasta to cook right, but absorb the liquid from the sauce, releasing the starch and creating great texture.” With so many years of experience, it’s only right that Conant allows

20181109_XAL_LNW_PG00-1:23November5,2018

himself to make things up as he goes along. He shares that his style of food is a combination of inspiration from many people, but also the ability to create his own food and speak his own language. “I look at what a lot of people do, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for it,” said Conant, attributing his personal series of successes to someone who is always working on the bigger picture. “I worked hard to be recognizable but I think that TV and advertising platforms hopefully get people in the seats of the restaurant—but the celebrity aspect, that’s not my motivation. That started years ago, the Wolfgang Pucks of the world and celebrity chefs. That’s not a new phenomenon by any means.” Conant has his hand in many ventures. Over the years he has published three cookbooks, Scott Conant’s New Italian Cooking (2005), Bold Italian (2008) and The Scarpetta Cookbook (2013). While he considers himself a cook first, he is also an entrepreneur whose wealth of knowledge has been beneficial for aspiring and up-andcoming chefs as well. His star on the Food Network walk of fame has served him well as a judge on Chopped and multiple other shows. “I had to figure out how to be self-critical, and I really feel like I can help chefs be better. That was my main reason when I started doing Chopped,” he says. “Frankly, I’ll call BS when their egos get out of whack. I’m quick to point that out; that’s what they need to hear in order to learn and grow.” Conant will soon be opening an Italian restaurant in LaGuardia Airport called Osteria Fusco. Keep up with Conant by visiting www. scottconant.com.

INTERNET

What’s On YouTube? BY STEVE MOSCO SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

“When I discovered YouTube, I didn’t work for five days. I did nothing. I viewed ‘Cookie Monster sings Chocolate Rain’ about a thousand times.” —Michael Scott, The Office Video-sharing site YouTube started in 2005 after its founders had experienced difficulty in finding and sharing the infamous Janet Jackson Super Bowl video. About a million cat videos

later, YouTube is a multi-million dollar platform overflowing with content creators that rival network television shows in terms of viewership and revenue. Some channels, like vlogger and much-maligned millennial PewDiePie, has amassed an insane 66.1 million viewers, despite being incomprehensibly irritating. Here are three YouTube channels that, while not possessing the most subscribers, are some of the best that YouTube has to offer.

Good Mythical Morning

Ever wonder what happens to someone when they eat an entire Ghost Pepper chili? Or perhaps if a food item (or some other marginally edible substance) can be turned into a pizza or a Hot Pocket? Well, wonder no more thanks to Good Mythical Morning (GMM), a comedy/talk/ variety series created by Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal in 2012. Currently in its 14th season, GMM boasts more than 14 million subscribers and more than 4 billion total video views. The show consists of its hosts, Rhett and Link, performing stunts, food-related antics and other performances with a new video uploaded every weekday. They also produce funny music videos, sketches and ridiculous local commercials.

Bad Lip Reading

Created by an anonymous music and video producer based in Los Angeles, Bad Lip Reading (BLR) overdubs humorous, ridiculous vocal work over clips from movies, television, songs, sports and the news. Though created in 2011, it enjoyed its major breakout moment during the 2012 presidential election cycle. As of January 2018, the Bad Lip Reading channel has more than 7 million subscribers and more than a billion views across its videos. BLR hit the big time in 2015, when it simultaneously released three videos for the three original Star Wars films featuring voice work from Jack Black, Maya Rudolph and Bill Hader.

Report Of The Week

Hosted by John Jurasek, colloquially known in the YouTube comments section as “Reviewbrah,” Report of the Week features its host giving food reviews of new and past releases from an array of fast food establishments in a series called “Running On Empty.” Known for wearing suits and speaking in what can only be described as “old-time radio newsman,” Jurasek started his channel in 2011 focusing mainly on energy drink reviews. The show has since gained a healthy audience and robust following, with more than 1 million subscribers and close to 84 million total videos views. Reviewbrah also hosts shortwave radio program, VORW Radio International.

MUSIC

Billy Gibbons: Blues BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

lues may have its roots deep in the last century, but if there’s anyone qualified to drag it kicking and screaming into the current millennium, it’s Billy Gibbons. While most music fans know the ZZ Top founding member for his hirsute appearance and the string of videos his band had in heavy rotation on MTV during its heyday, the man has first and foremost been a fierce advocate for the aforementioned genre. As someone who has worshipped at the musical shrines of Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, Gibbons walks the walk, no more so than on his second solo outing, the recently released The Big Bad Blues. What started out as a group of friends knocking around in a studio in the Houston native’s hometown turned into an 11-song platter dedicated to a number of his musical heroes along

with a spate of originals. “I had booked some sessions at our studio down in Texas known as Foam Box Recordings. And our two engineers, Mr. Joe Hardy and G.L. ‘G-Mane’ Moon, were all set up and ready to rock. Coincidentally, Greg Morrow, our fearless drummer from way back, was passing through town. So Hardy grabbed a bass guitar, and I grabbed a six-string, and Mr. Morrow stepped in,” Gibbons explained. “Of course, wanting to be the continual interpreters playing this thing we call blues, we started off with the usual run-down of our favorites—Jimmy Reed, Howlin’ Wolf and of course, Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley in the mix. After a couple of days, we were having such a good time that Mr. Hardy asked if I wanted him to play back what we had been doing. I asked him what he was talking about, and he said he’d had the tape machine running. We were rather satisfied with what we started, and

Missionary more obscure gems that the sexagenarian rocker plans to dust off for the masses. “We’re going to stir it up. What did not make the record was a handful of other blues covers that deserve some light of the day. I’ve got to hand it to everybody that showed up at the studio. What was impressive was that everything was steered towards some obscure numbers that are rarely heard, which intrigued all of us that were in the studio,” he said. “Having tiptoed through the deep cuts, I thought, ‘Gee whiz, it’s one thing to present your best shot at emulating what the originators invented from the way-back. But why not highlight some of the interesting tracks that rarely get heard?’ Unless you’re an aficionado that spends 24-7 digging deep, there’s a lot of good stuff that’s waiting to be unveiled. So that’s our plan.” As someone whose mother got the ball rolling by bringing Gibbons and

his sister to an Elvis Presley concert when the future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was five years old (“I thought, ‘I like that.’ Who didn’t? Everybody was liking that.”), the pursuit of getting his own guitar came to fruition nine days after his 13th birthday, when his father gifted Gibbons with an electric guitar and an amp. “From the time I saw Elvis and B.B. King, I don’t think there was a day that went by when I didn’t badger my folks about a set of drums or a guitar. Sure enough, on Christmas Day, my dad unveiled a guitar. Then he pulled out a little Fender amplifier. It was this tiny, radio-looking thing,” he recalled. “So my sister and I raced back into my room and she started saying,

‘Let’s hear it, let’s hear it.’ I think the first lick that I had tackled was the introduction to Ray Charles, ‘What’d I Say’ and before the lights went out, I had the Jimmy Reed figure. We called it the ‘dunta, dunta.’ She said, ‘Play that dunta-dunta.’” What followed has been quite the musical journey driven by his time in ZZ Top. Among his most memorable experiences was not only opening for Jimi Hendrix as a member of his preTop band The Moving Sidewalks, but having the audacity to include “Foxy Lady” and “Purple Haze” in the set. (“I kind of glanced over at the shadows, and he was standing at the side of the stage and he had his arms folded. When we made our escape, he grabbed me and he said, ‘I like you. You’ve got a lot of nerve.’”) More recently, it was touring

with John Fogerty and collaborating with the Creedence Clearwater Revival founding member on a new song called “Holy Grail.” (“We wrote a song together and we just had a great time. Once it was buttoned up, he said, ‘You know we’re going to have to play this together.’ I said, ‘That’s fine by me.’”) A longtime collector of African art, Gibbons’ fascination can be traced to the respect he has for honoring musical and cultural tradition. “Back to 1990, we started the sessions that wound up coming out as the release Rhythmeen. I bumped into an African art dealer and picked up a little statue,” he said. “He asked what I was going to do with it, and I said I was going to put it in the doorway of the recording studio in such a way that we have to turn sideways to enter the room. And in so doing, this would not be something on a shelf. It would actually be functionary. It will remind us of what we’re supposed to do—go back to the roots.”

evon Cajuste, a Long Island native who was born in Syosset and raised in Seaford, became a household name in August after he appeared in the latest season of the HBO docuseries Hard Knocks, which gives NFL fans an up close and personal look into summer training camp. This season’s subject was the Cleveland Browns, and Cajuste, a tight end, became one of the main subjects on the show. “When they first announced the show, I was like ‘cool,’” said Cajuste. “But, at the end of the day, we had to remain focused. Do your job. Do what you do. This didn’t change anything, but it was cool that we had an opportunity to share our story and that it would be good for the team.” Cajuste was the type of underdog who was often times featured on the show. He went undrafted out of Stanford in 2016 but found a home with the San Francisco 49ers. He was cut right before that season but signed to the Green Bay Packer’s practice squad. After a year out of the league in 2017, Cajuste signed a contract with the Browns this past January. Right as the show started on August 7, we got to know about Cajuste’s hobbies and personal life. There were a few scenes that focused on his spirituality and the need to meditate to keep himself in a balanced state of mind. “It’s a damn near priority to the job I’m in,” said Cajuste. “If I don’t have that, my world would actually collapse. It’s an every day routine. When I don’t do it on some crazy days, I start to get emotionally and physically unstable.” What made Devon’s story so capitvating, however, was getting to know his dad, Gregory. It’s been a tough journey for the proud father, dealing with a series of serious health issues throughout his adult life. Despite a stroke, a tracheotomy, and multiple heart attacks, he is still fighting and making sure he gets to see Devon play on the NFL stage. “Having him on the show was great,” said Devon. “It was good to get it out there to people that everyone goes through this kind of stuff and just because we are professional athletes doesn’t mean we don’t have to deal with tough situations.” One of the more stunning moments on the show was when, while sitting next to Devon in an interview, Gregory revealed that he recently had another

heart attack and that Devon didn’t know until he said it right then. “I was in straight shock,” said Devon. “I didn’t really have thoughts. I was trying to focus on controlling my emotion. When I saw him, I knew the state he was in. I did not think he had a lot of time left at all. Seeing him every single day breathing heavy and it being difficult to do anything was just tough. To find that out at that moment, I just kept on trying to control my emotions.” As Hard Knocks cameras were rolling, the Browns played in their four preseason games that would help determined who they should keep on their team and who should be cut. Cajuste performed well during the preseason, catching five passes for 101 yards in limited action. While it seemed like he had a good shot at making the roster, especially with a strong final preseason game, Cajuste didn’t want to get his hopes up too much. “I honestly didn’t want to think that I would make it because if I put all my eggs in one basket, and then have this huge letdown, the feeling is not good,” said Cajuste. “That was never my focus at all. I just made

sure I did what I had to do and let the decision be what it was. I would accept it no matter what.” Unfortunately, that letdown came on Sept. 1, when Cajuste was told he was not going to make the team. The scene of him finding out was shown on Hard Knocks, as well as a FaceTime call with his father that was more lighthearted about the future than down on being cut again. And while his time in Cleveland was over, he enjoyed the opportunity the team gave him to play and the opportunity to tell his story on Hard Knocks. “I definitely enjoyed my time on it,” said Cajuste. “I was able to share a story and make an impact on people. I shared a side of me that most other people don’t feel comfortable sharing. Being able to do that while playing the game I love was great.” Since his time with the Browns ended, he has gotten calls from the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins, although both were looking to add him later this season. He may not play this year since he got shoulder surgery to get him healthy enough for an NFL roster again. In the meantime, he has built a website based around his use of energy crystals and meditation, which also includes making videos and T-shirts. The best news of all for Devon? His father, after having a big surgery a few weeks ago, has not only defied death yet again but his health has greatly improved. He will be there for Devon whenever the next stop in his journey comes. “He’s the best he’s been in a long time,” said Devon.
