Mrs. Maisel’s Other Half Michael Zegen talks about his role in ‘Marvelous’ Amazon show By Steve Mosco
Michael Zegen stars as Joel Maisel in the Amazon period comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, with Rachel Brosnahan (below) in the title role.

W
ith a frenetic energy washed in 1950s-era gloss, a robust cast and sharp writing, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel returned last week to Amazon Prime for its second season. The hit show burst onto the streaming scene in 2017, debuting to critical acclaim and, more importantly, rave reviews from fans who were immediately obsessed with the quick-witted period comedy. Amazon wasted no time and picked the show up for a second and third season, while the initial run garnered multiple accolades, including eight Emmy Awards. For series co-star Michael Zegen, Maisel’s runaway success is due in large part to the writers, in particular, series creator and producer Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband and longtime collaborator, Daniel Palladino. Zegen stars as Joel Maisel, the estranged husband of housewife turned stand-up comedian Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played with perfect comedic timing by Rachel Brosnahan. “They put you in this world and you can’t ask for anything more than that as an actor,” said Zegen of the writers, who, along with a team of set designers, absolutely nail the 1950s aesthetics. “The writers do so much research for that time period to get everything right. It really puts you in it. I go to work and I am in the 1950s and that is so extremely important.” And in that world, Zegen’s Joel Maisel looks to bounce back from screwing up his marriage to Midge in the show’s debut run. [Season one spoilers ahead]. After revealing the tawdry details of an affair with his secretary, Joel leaves his wife in the middle of the night, setting off a chain reaction that leads to Midge discovering her prowess as a comedian. It was a full-on villainous role for Zegen at first, until his character begins to realize his marriage’s implosion wasn’t his wife’s fault, but instead, his own insecurity’s doing. It’s the kind of character development that an actor dreams of, according to Zegen. “I had nothing to do with Joel’s arc from jerk to sympathetic character,” said Zegen. “All of the writers, with Dan and Amy, created his arc in season one and didn’t tell me anything about where this character was going to end up. When I first got the part and started filming, I assumed that Joel was the villain or at least the antagonist and I embraced it.” Embracing that character meant absorbing some Internet vitriol from fans, some of whom reached out to Zegen via Twitter to tell him that Joel is “trash.” “I take it a little personally because I am Joel, but anytime an actor gets someone to feel, good or bad, you are doing your job,” he said. “A lot of actors love playing the villain because it is often the meatiest part. You don’t want to be Batman, you want to be the Joker. Well, who am I kidding, I’d want to be Batman, too.” Zegen’s career path to his eventual turn as a series regular on Maisel puts the actor squarely in the “Where do I know him from?” category. Most prominently, Zegen found himself as a semi-regular on Denis Leary’s firefighter drama Rescue Me, in a
(Photos courtesy of Amazon Studios)
handful of episodes of The Walking Dead as well as in the role of Bugsy Siegel on Boardwalk Empire, the latter of which saw him working with Steve Buscemi, an honor that the Reservoir Dogs-obsessed Zegen
called “one of his lifelong dreams.” Of all the roles he ever landed, including a co-starring part in the film adaptation of The Seagull, Zegen said that Joel Maisel was the one character he coveted the most. Zegen went on three auditions and had to wait about two weeks after his last read-through before he heard anything from the producers. “I didn’t think I was going to get the role. I was biting my nails and cursing the world during those two weeks. I was thinking, this was the one part I wanted and I screwed it up,” he said. “It was amazing when I got it. It feels like the part was written for me. The character really resonates with me. I think subconsciously I had always been waiting for the right role and somehow this came around. It was kismet. This guy Joel is so much fun to play and I felt like I knew this guy and could play him better than anyone else.” It helps that he is playing opposite Rachel Brosnahan and others that include Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle, Alex Borstein and Kevin Pollack, who plays Joel’s father Moishe Maisel. It’s a collection of actors that Zegen calls “real heavyweights” and he also says that “there is no weak link on the show and everyone really brings their own charm to their characters.” As for Brosnahan in particular, Zegen said there is a reason Maisel viewers are so drawn to the title character.

The hit Amazon show also stars television veteran Tony Shalhoub (left) as Midge’s father and Marin Hinkle (below, center) as her mother.
MARVELOUS from page 3 “I love Rachel, she is the best,” he said. “Anytime you get to work with an actor of her caliber, it is a total joy. She is so hardworking, she knows all her lines and that is so important because her character has so many lines.” And all those lines have to come
from somewhere, which brings it all back to what Zegen believes is the most important component of the show—the writing. The dialogue, overflowing with clever, fast-paced repartee, is a style that can be largely credited to Sherman-Palladino, who was previously best known for her work on Gilmore Girls, among other
projects. For Zegen, the writing is world-building in the truest sense of the term. “With Maisel, it’s all on the page,” he said. “And we have such great writers and not only that, we are surrounded by this world with 1950s cars and vintage costumes, so it’s easy to get into this role and become the character.
It’s so collaborative. Amy and Dan, they have a vision for what they want, but they allow the characters to evolve based on what the actors are bringing to the performance. Not only that, the show is so visually stunning, to me it’s like an old-timey movie. Like one of those grand 1950s movie musicals.”

With so many synthetics on the market, wool has become an underrated fiber, but it has so much to offer when it comes to winter travel apparel. Woolx’s merino wool garments can act as base layers under other clothing or worn all on their own. Merino is super soft and itch-free, lightweight and incredibly warm, while also remaining breathable. It naturally wicks moisture, allowing your body to stay dry, and does not absorb odors. Styles for both women and men are universal and classic, and finished with quality details. Leggings $104, tunic $79; www.woolx.com.

inter may be the “off-season” for most travel destinations, but it’s actually a great time to travel—things are cheaper, and there are fewer tourists and less humidity. Braving the cold is worth it whether you’re climbing mountaintops or exploring European cities, full of history museums, coffee shops and pubs to duck into when it gets chilly. The globetrotter in your life would love to receive any of these gifts that are essential for cold weather travel.
Sea to Summit DryLite towel
$11.95 - $36.95; www.seatosummitusa.com Sea to Summit describes this as the “perfect hostel travel towel.” Towels are sometimes hard to come by while traveling, so it’s best to bring your own. DryLite towels are made of soft suede-like microfiber and quick-drying, and better yet, so light and compact they hardly take up any space in your luggage. Sizes range from a small hand towel to a large beach towel to suit every need— even interstellar hitchhikers would find these towels massively useful.

Rocking The Road For A Cure: 10 Years Strong BY TANYA SIMONS
editorial@antonmediagroup.com
A
s 2018 winds down, so does the 10-year anniversary celebration of Rocking The Road For A Cure, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3 organization dedicated to restoring the strength, confidence, and physical and emotional well-being of patients coping with the challenges of breast cancer. The organization sends licensed and certified professionals into patients’ homes to provide free health and wellness services such as case management, individual and family counseling, massage therapy, restorative yoga, Reiki, nutritional consultations, housekeeping, childcare, and much more. All breast cancer patients residing in Queens and Long Island are eligible to receive services, regardless of income or insurance status. Rocking The Road For A Cure (RTRFAC) was founded in 2008 by Dawn Frey, who came up with the idea while struggling with her own breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. At the suggestion of a family friend, she attended a three-day wellness retreat for breast cancer patients that offered services like restorative yoga, massage, and nutrition consults. “I was at the peak of my treatment,” recalled Frey. “My immune system was suppressed, my energy was low, and I felt lousy. The restorative yoga allowed me to release pent up emotions and alleviate some of the stress I had from being diagnosed and going through treatment. The whole experience
Rocking The Road For A Cure founder Dawn Frey really helped. After the retreat I joined a restorative yoga group, but after spending all the extra time on the road, fighting traffic and hunting for parking, I had so much additional stress that it was practically counterproductive.” When her subsequent search for in-home yoga lessons yielded pricey results, Mrs. Frey realized how many people could benefit from free in-home services. Thus, Rocking The Road For A Cure was born. Like many grassroots nonprofits, Rocking The Road For A Cure relies

heavily on participation and contributions from the community. Their most recent fundraising event was their ninth annual Motorcycle Run in October, which garnered support from hundreds of bikers and spectators and generated some much-needed revenue to help them fulfill their mission. Seeking Humane Solutions For Young Refugees
I
n a recent story in the Albany Times Union, reporter Mallory Moench paints a different picture about juvenile asylum seekers as compared to recent stories about caravans purportedly composed of gang members and Middle Eastern terrorists. In the report we meet Rosa, who left El Salvador as a young adolescent after being targeted by a gang intending to prostitute her. To prevent becoming sexually exploited, she left her parents and crossed the border. She has been living in the Capital Region of New York for the past two years. Rosa, now 17, is undocumented and is seeking special immigrant juvenile status that would enable her to apply for a green card which permits a foreign national to live and work permanently in the U.S. Rosa understands that she could be denied and deported. More than 12,500 undocumented young people have participated in immigration court this year alone. For those without a lawyer, the odds of deportation are much greater. According to the Albany Times Union report, “If juveniles [under the age of 21] have a relative who is a U.S. citizen or green card holder, they can apply for a family-based petition. If they are victims of trafficking, domestic violence or another crime they can apply for crime victim visas. If they’re fleeing persecution like Rosa, they can apply for asylum. If they’re missing one or more parents they’re eligible for special immigrant juvenile status.” Former Attorney General Jeff
PARENTHOOD PLUS Andrew Malekoff
Sessions had taken measures to fast track deportations. Consequently, many juveniles may be sent back to their homelands—and the dangers and threats that await them—before legal proceedings are implemented. Many of the young people living in New York’s Capital Region, ages 12 to 19, came from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras or Mexico after being confronted with gang violence. The profile and numbers of refugees on Long Island is similar. It is ironic that with the incendiary political rhetoric of the day, many asylum seekers have been labeled gang members, when it is gangs that they are trying to escape from. Many young migrants endured trauma in their passage to the U.S. They faced starvation, violence and abandonment. There are only two immigration courts in all of New York. One is located in New York City and the other is in Buffalo. For many asylum seekers, the cost for transportation to court hearings prevents them from following through. For example, for those living in the Capital Region, a bus ride can be as much as $100 and more than $500 for private transportation. This is especially daunting when

they are living in poverty. Furthermore, there is a cap on the number of visas given each year and also each month. This contributes to inordinate delays in court. For most of these juveniles the
fear and anxiety of being deported as they await a final legal determination can be unbearable and impacts their ability to heal from the traumatic journey to the U.S. Immigration laws do need to be enforced as open borders with endless flow of refugees is unsustainable. The challenge is how to enforce the law, dial down the divisive and hateful rhetoric, demonstrate compassion and seek humane solutions for young migrants simply looking to live without fear. We’ve strayed from that ideal. I hope we can find our way back. EDITOR’S HOLIDAY PICKS
The Gift Of G Viva Vivobarefoot! These are the best boots for travel this winter BY JENNIFER FAUCI
jfauci@antonmediagroup.com
BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com
If you’re doing some traveling this winter, you’ll need a good pair of boots to take you on your globetrotting adventures. They should be comfortable right from the start, weatherproof, insulating in cold temperatures and also stylish. Vivobarefoot’s Gobi Hi 2.0 leather boots fit the bill. It’s kind of a cliché to call leather buttery soft, but sometimes that’s the best description, especially when it comes to this wild hide leather. Combined with the overall construction, it feels more like slipping your feet into a pair of slippers than a typical pair of boots. Don’t let the softness fool you though. These are durable and tough. They will get you where you need to go without blisters or foot aches. I should know—these puppies took me all over Europe this fall. The soles are made from a patented, ultra-thin, puncture resistant layer that

is five times more puncture resistant than a standard sole of the same thickness. Cobblestones and rugged terrain are no rival for these boots. As far as style, you can’t go wrong. Casual enough for daytripping, nice enough for the office. You can pretty

much wear them anywhere. Their minimalist aesthetic harmonizes with any outfit. The inside of these boots are lined with faux shearling and have a thermal insole, which adds an extra layer of warmth between your feet and the ground. According to Vivobarefoot, the Outlast thermal regulator, reflective foil and insulating foam, give you three times the thermal protection as a normal insole. Paired with thick wool socks, you don’t have to worry about cold toes even on a snowy day. A neat feature, though, is that the thermal insole is removable and there’s a leather footbed underneath, which extends the life of these boots beyond winter into warmer temperatures. I really like that the laces are smooth and round. As a result, it’s easy to loosen the boots and take them off. But they don’t loosen on their own if tied with a double knot. The best part about these boots and other footwear in Vivobarefoot’s collections is that they are healthy for your feet. Simply by wearing them, you will build up strength in your feet and calves by exercising muscles that other types of shoes don’t allow to do any work. Finally, the quality is evident in the details—in the stitching, the supple leather and hook eyelets. Beyond boots, Vivo Barefoot has a wide selection of footwear with the same kind of technology in the soles. I can already feel my brand loyalty to Vivobarefoot kicking in. Find Vivobarefoot Gobi Hi 2.0 leather boots for women and men and a variety of other styles at www. vivobarefoot.com.

Then we prep the natural lashes for extension using our primer, sterilized tweezers, medical grade adhesive and our exclusive curl lashes.” While lashes usually last up to three weeks before a refill is needed, basic lash care is helpful. What’s Making Your Family Sick This Flu Season W
hat’s worse than coming down with a nasty cold or flu? If you’re a parent, your answer might be having that same illness along with a family full of sick little ones. That’s why the team at A Secure Life set out to identify the top five items spreading the most germs in homes with children. As it turns out, the items belonging to kids could be largely to blame for the spread of germs in your home. Common parenting necessities like strollers, sippy cups, and plush toys topped our list of items with the highest bacterial count in the study. The number of germs on these items even beat out average bacterial counts for toilet seats and bathroom floors. Stay healthy this cold and flu season by drinking fluids, getting plenty of rest and frequently washing your hands to avoid the spread of germs. —Submitted by A Secure Life

Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Awards $100,000 To Feinstein Institute The funds will go towards medical research for the next phase of Alzheimer’s Disease Research Project The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) announced the awarding of $100,000 in grant funding to the Litwin-Zucker Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research on Long Island, New York. The award represents the next phase of funding for a research project aimed at treating hallucinations, agitation and aggression among individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease. Behaviors such as these are among the most troubling symptoms that often present in the course of Alzheimer’s disease. These symptoms are frequently one of the main reasons that families make the difficult decision to move their loved one with Alzheimer’s from their home to a residential healthcare setting. “Enhancing quality of life for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease is critically important to AFA,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president & CEO. “Finding more effective treatments for hallucination and aggression will make it easier for families to keep their loved one at home longer, avoid costly healthcare settings, and most importantly, improve
quality of life for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. We are pleased to support the work being done by Dr. Peter Davies and his team.” “AFA recognized the urgent need for research in this very difficult area, and provided support when few others were willing to do so. Dr. Jeremy Koppel and I, along with our team, have made real progress in this area over the last two years, and are excited to continue this research. We are very grateful to the AFA for helping launch this promising research,” said Peter Davies, PhD, Director of the
Litwin-Zucker Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Currently, the only medications available for treating these behaviors are powerful antipsychotic medications used to treat schizophrenia. These drugs can potentially cause adverse side effects, including an increased risk of cardiovascular issues and stroke. Researchers at the center, led by Davies, are examining a series of potential causes of the psychosis seen in Alzheimer’s disease, including an accumulation of tau in the brain’s frontal cortex. Their aim is to develop new, targeted treatments that can treat these symptoms, improve quality of life and keep people in their homes longer, without the potentially harmful side effects of currently used drugs. The funding award is the third phase of a five year, $500,000 commitment from AFA to the Center for this research project. —Submitted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America

Bringing Holiday Cheer To A Loved One Living With Alzheimer’s W
ith millions of American families affected by Alzheimer’s disease getting ready to celebrate the holidays, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has provided tips on how to adapt holiday gatherings to make them as enjoyable as possible for someone living with a dementia-related illness. “Being together with family are what the holidays are all about. Alzheimer’s doesn’t have to change that,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s president and CEO. “There are ways to adapt holiday gatherings to be sensitive to the needs of a family member with Alzheimer’s disease, so that they can remain involved in the celebration and enjoy the holidays with their loved ones.” AFA advises families who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s to consider the following:
Keep your loved one involved
Find ways to maintain your loved one’s involvement in the holiday celebration. If they are used to doing the holiday cooking, keep them involved, such as by inviting them into the preparation process. If they enjoyed music, play some of their favorite holiday songs or ones from their favorite era so they may enjoy them as they always have.
share old family photos with your loved one and reminisce. Create new traditions; find things they are able to do and enjoy, such as looking at neighborhood holiday lights or listening to music, and spend time doing it with them.
Maintain a normal routine
Changes in one’s daily routine can also cause challenges for someone living with dementia. Planning can be the key to ensuring a person’s comfort. If the person usually takes an afternoon walk, build in time for that. If they go to bed earlier in the evening, hold the celebration earlier in the day so that everyone can participate.
Be sensitive to the individual’s needs
Excess stimuli can be challenging for an individual living with dementia, which is why it’s important to take the environment into account ahead of time. Be aware of your loved one’s sensitivity to factors such as crowds and loud noises, and try to plan celebrations in a way that minimizes those stresses. Have comforting items and activities available to help.
Build on past traditions and find new ways to connect Keep building on old traditions where you can;
Plan travel appropriately
If you’re traveling to a celebration with someone who has Alzheimer’s, consider their capabilities and plan to make arrangements that are comfortable and realistic. Take into account whether they travel better at a specific time of day. Families who have questions or would like additional information can contact AFA’s Helpline at 866-232-8484 and speak with a licensed social worker. The helpline is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends. —Submitted by the AFA

Mignonne Gavigan, the New Yorkbased statement jewelry and accessories brand founded by Mignonne “Maggie” Gavigan, has partnered with Christina Bryant’s bohemian home décor label St. Frank, to create an exclusive capsule collection of luxury accessories and home goods dubbed, Mignonne Gavigan x St. Frank. Inspired by artisan crafts and culture from across the world including India, China, Nigeria, Congo, Peru and more, both Mignonne Gavigan and St. Frank have a deep appreciation for hand-crafted artistry. “We formed a bond during the early days of our brands, based on mutual admiration for unconventional materials and global design,” the founders share. “Our respect and encouragement for each others’ endeavors has resulted in a lifelong friendship and countless motivating conversations,” For their sophomore collaboration, the designers married Mignonne Gavigan’s playful, color-forward aesthetic and intricate beading with St. Frank’s bold patterns and luxury fabrics, resulting in a collection of six modern styles for your wardrobe and your home. Each piece in the capsule takes inspiration from three of St. Frank’s signature offerings: The Kuba Earrings ($150), Kuba Scarf Necklace ($595) and Kuba Alpaca Throw ($425) are new iterations of the Kuba cloth, a unique ceremonial textile featuring complex geometric designs with unexpected interruptions in the dual colored pattern. The Miao Scarf Necklace ($595) and Miao Alpaca Throw ($425) are translated from vintage Miao wedding blankets from the mountainous provenances of southern China where weaving seen as a traditional skill passed down generationally. This modern
day design features a pink and blue diamond configuration. The Yoruba Bird Earrings ($325) are translated from a beaded crown traditionally worn by Southwestern Nigeria’s Yoruba royalty. The Season To Sparkle BY JENNIFER FAUCI

ike a new fallen snow or lights all aglow, there is no better gift that sparkles than beautiful jewelry. Brad Gross is fifth generation at HL Gross, his family’s jewelry business, located at 840 Franklin Ave., Garden City and he is gearing up for the holidays. “Although bridal is a significant aspect of our business, we also carry a big assortment of fashion jewelry,” said Gross, noting that Roberto Coin, KC designs and Shy Creations are some of the designers that the store carries. “For fashion jewelry, we do a lot of unbranded items and curate our own to give you a unique look for less price. A lot of designers you pay a premium for so in the fashion jewelry world we like to buy our own inventory and sell it under our name.” Of those special pieces, Gross stated that there are many trends this season, namely stacked bangles and rings, classic stud earrings and going back to the basics with tennis bracelets and necklaces.
14k White Gold Diamond Initial Necklace; $416
Lilac Blossoms Budding Brilliance Ring; $350 “Mixing different colors and diamonds with colored stones and stacking jewelry has become really popular,” said Gross, adding that personalized gifts are also huge for mothers and grandmothers. “A lot of younger moms today are wanting something with their kids’ initial. The brand features trendy, funky pieces that are well priced. For those looking to buy something special for their significant other, Gross and other associates are more than happy to help. “We look for a woman’s taste if they have a history with us, we’ll look and see what we can use. If the client is taking a shot in the dark, we won’t go too fashion forward or too trendy just because people have a particular taste,” he said, making note of the fact that H.L. Gross has a two week return policy after Christmas so people can come in and make exchanges. With a majority of the inventory on the store’s website, Gross also highlighted the preowned watch department. His brother, Matt, has a vast knowledge of all watch brands including an expansive collection of high end Swiss brands that come

We build a relationship with people and when we sell an engagement ring, we hope they come back for wedding bands, anniversary bands and push gifts.”

Preserve Memories For A Lifetime With Album Envy BY ANDREA BILTON

n a digital age where most photos hibernate in virtual folders and lay dormant on social media feeds, Album Envy strives to honor your family’s captured memories with high-quality, custom photobooks handcrafted locally in Port Washington. The company offers three variations of their product that can be personalized and ordered directly from their website. Customers can select “The Photobook” starting at $36, “The Hybrid” at $49, or “The Album” at $175. Each option boasts a wide range of customization factors including size, color, binding, page number and page texture. Every photo is printed on thick, professional-grade paper to ensure longevity and bound by hand in your choice of linen or leather. The pages are constructed to lay completely flat, resulting in uninterrupted photo spreads. “I think we make it as easy as possible to create
something that translates to lifelong memory,” said company owner Keith Piccione. “Within a minute or two, you can have a book designed and ready to order. It lays it out for you, you can change it, it’s very graphical, very user-friendly, and fun. And you get great a product out of it. You just have to look at people’s eyes when they look at the book for the first time, and then you get it.” Piccione, a Long Island native who grew up in East Meadow, launched Album Envy early this year. After accumulating 30 years of experience in the photo printing industry, he has decided to channel his knowledge and expertise into a meaningful product unmatched in quality, and hopes to perpetuate the importance of honoring images offscreen. “These photobooks are gorgeous, they’re

viable long term. You go through the effort of capturing an image, why not make the effort to remember it? Honor the image. That’s the message.” As the company ships out their products in mere days, you can surprise your loved ones this holiday season with a personalized album composed of professional-grade photo prints preserving moments from memorable trips, special events, family photoshoots and more. “You take so many images, but what do you do with them? They accumulate in your phone, they accumulate on some disc someplace, or in a cloud someplace, and the
emotional impact and reason why you created them is lost over time. You forget them,” said Piccione. “Our message is: take those images, and put them in a book. A beautiful, heirloom book that you can look at and relive over and over again. Visually, it’s very powerful- to be able to look at an image, and evoke some emotion, or memory, is huge. That’s our message that we’re trying to get across, nationwide. And all of that is done in Port Washington, New York on Long Island.” If you would like to order your own Album Envy photobook just in time for the holidays or read more information about their products, visit www.albumenvy.com.

Plum: How the Sugar Plum Fairy Got Her Wings (Simon & Schuster) $17.99 With a nod to E.T.A. Hoffman’s chestnut The Nutcracker, married debut authors Sean Hayes and Scott Icenogle spin a sweet origin story about one of Hoffman’s favorite characters: The Sugar Plum Fairy. When young Plum, the tiniest, loneliest—and perhaps most picked-on—resident of Mary Fitzgerald Orphanage tries to
salvage a happy holiday for her fellow orphans, she receives some magical Christmas Eve help from a “mysterious magician” named Mr. Drosselmeyer. After gobbling up Drosselmeyer’s gift of a petit four–size Nuzzlecake, Plum is transported to the Land of Sweets where her act of selfless kindness toward a dejected King Christopher unspools a jolly denouement that includes an adoption—and a sprouting of wings. Illustrated beautifully by Robin Thompson.

The ABC’s Of PBC P
rimary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a common autoimmune disease that primarily affects the small bile ducts within the liver. For uncertain reasons, it is particularly common on Long Island. PBC affects the small bile ducts located within the liver. These small bile ducts connect to a series of progressively larger ducts that facilitate the transport of bile out of the liver. As the damage caused in PBC is to the small bile ducts, one could logically conclude that PBC is a disease of the biliary tree not of the liver. It is important to understand that the ducts which are affected are so small that damage to these bile ducts leads to damage of the liver cells and therefore, PBC is a disease of the liver. In PBC, a slowly progressive inflammatory process destroys the bile ducts within the liver that can lead to cirrhosis. More than 90% of people with PBC are women. Most people with PBC do not have any symptoms and feel fine. There are, however, certain symptoms such as fatigue, itching, joint pains, night blindness, jaundice and skin

discolorations are common. Several diseases are associated with PBC. The prevalence of thyroid disease in PBC is quite high. In fact, the diagnosis of hypothyroidism frequently predates the diagnosis of PBC. Other diseases associated with PBC include dry eyes and dry mouths, scleroderma, osteoarthritis, iritis, celiac disease, and myasthenia gravis. Due to its lack of symptoms, PBC may go unrecognized for years. The most common abnormality leading to the diagnosis of PBC is an isolated elevated liver enzyme called alkaline phosphatase. A positive anti-mitochondrial antibody (AMA) is found in more than 95% of people and confirms the disease. A liver biopsy is not needed to diagnose PBC. Untreated, PBC is a progressive disease and most people will over time progress to more advanced liver disease. Currently, two drugs are approved for PBC. The first line of therapy of is ursodeoxycholic acid (URSO). URSO works by altering the bile acid concentrations within the liver and modulating the immunologic

injury seen in PBC. Treatment is life-long and may prevent disease progression. Although most people respond to URSO, there still remain a few patients who are refractory to this medication. The second line of therapy for patients who do not have a complete response to URSO is obeticholic acid (OCA). OCA is an FXR agonist that decreases bile acid synthesis and increases bile acid secretion causing choleresis. There is currently a lot of ongoing research to find even more drugs to treat PBC by several different pathways. Hopefully, these new agents will be available in the not too distant future. In summary, PBC is a common autoimmune disease, which frequently goes unrecognized. Over the past 25 years, progress in the treatment of PBC has led to a change in its natural history from one with a horrible prognosis to an extremely manageable condition. The key is successful treatment is early diagnosis. Appropriate patients should be screened for the disease so that therapy can be initiated early.

HEALTH BRIEF
Keeping Your Health On Track During The Indulgent Holiday Season Stick to routines
To the best of your ability during this hectic time of year, attempt to stick to routines that promote wellness. Set a bedtime and honor it. Hit the gym. Meditate. Do whatever it is that keeps you grounded and feeling your best.
Drink up
Many people associate dehydration with the warmer months. But in winter weather it can be especially easy to forget to stay well-hydrated, especially
when you’re indulging in alcoholic beverages at all those holiday parties. Remember, water doesn’t need to be the only source of hydration you think about this season. Soups and purees made from hearty winter vegetables, as well as citrus fruits do the trick, too, and their nutritional properties can help keep you healthy in winter.
Be mindful
The holiday party circuit can be dangerous when it comes to making nutritious choices. When you enter a party with a buffet set-up, it can be tempting to reach for the richest foods first. Before indulging in the canapes and Swedish meatballs, try filling up a plate with crudité first. While you’re doing so, get a good look at all the options available. This way, you’ll be more likely to savor choice items you’ll truly enjoy.
Keep things organically sweet
Staying on track doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the sweetness of the season. Instantly boost the flavor of your favorite meals with organic honey. One great option is Organic Honey In The Raw. USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified, it’s made from pure nectar collected from exotic wildflowers found in the remote Caatinga region of northeast Brazil. The hand-harvested, sustainable honey is raw (never heated above 117 degrees) and unfiltered, so it retains the benefits of bee pollen. And just one tablespoon of organic raw honey provides the right amount of sweetness and flavor for any dish or drink, including year-round staples like oatmeal, yogurt, tea and more. You can also
consider giving a honey makeover to all your favorite holiday recipes, including glazes and sauces for meat and poultry, cocktail recipes, and of course baked treats.
Make substitutions
Other healthful substitutions you can make this holiday season include topping pies with Greek yogurt instead of cream, using apple sauce in place of oil and nut flour instead of white flour in baking, and serving vegetable mash as an alternative to mashed potatoes. A joyful holiday season doesn’t mean you must pack on pounds or feel under the weather. By keeping your health on track throughout this indulgent time of year, you can start 2019 with your best food forward. —Courtesy of State Point Media, Inc.

NYU Winthrop To Host ‘Love Is In The Air’ The third annual event will benefit the center for cancer care
Fundraising for cancer care will take flight on Wednesday, Feb. 6 when NYU Winthrop Hospital hosts its third annual “Love is in the Air” from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. Proceeds from the event will support NYU Winthrop’s Center for Cancer Care and work to enhance patient care, support survivorship programs, and support technology and research advancements. Area residents are encouraged to “show the love” by supporting this all-important cause, as each year more than 18,000 Long Islanders on average are faced with the challenges of cancer. “Every day, we strive to improve early detection of cancers, foster the development of advanced treatments, and seek to maintain the quality of life of our cancer patients,” said Eva Chalas, MD, Physician Director of NYU Winthrop’s Cancer Center. “’Love is in the Air’ helps us realize these important objectives, providing funds that directly benefit patient care and well-being.” The fun-filled evening will feature a cabaret show in the museum’s domed IMAX theatre, cocktail dining in a lounge atmosphere, a DJ and dancing. Cradle of Aviation galleries will be open for guests to enjoy. The museum boasts more than 75 air and spacecraft from a hot air balloon to an actual Apollo Lunar Module. The Center for Cancer Care provides multidisciplinary comprehensive cancer care and has a

However, through our study of patients’ distress, we have identified a need for assistance with situations which adversely impact their distress levels. Dr. Megan Winner, one of the surgical oncologists, and her team have developed a new interdepartmental platform capable of extracting relevant data leveraging multiple electronic sources of information. This platform is now powering quality improvement and clinical research at NYU Winthrop.
“The generous support of ‘Love is in the Air’ patrons from this event will fund projects that help identify and treat early signs of distress related to a cancer diagnosis and treatment; accelerate cross-discipline communication about patients’ progress through their cancer care journey; and identify ways to minimize and shorten emergency room visits and inpatient hospitalizations which are linked to side effects from cancer treatment. They will help us swiftly refer patients to needed supportive services, including social work and financial assistance, which can be so important in helping a cancer patient maintain emotional resiliency,” noted Winner. Winner added that the proceeds from last year’s event are already increasing the scope of this platform, “enabling expedited day-to-day tracking of treatment updates across physician disciplines, enhancing the care delivered by our expert team, and empowering a new era of clinical research at NYU Winthrop leading to improved quality of care at NYU Winthrop’s Center for Cancer Care for decades to come.” A full range of event sponsorship opportunities are available for “Love is in the Air,” and tickets are $250 per person. Using Plants To Purify The Air In Your Home BY BEN HOLT editorial@antonmediagroup.com
F
inding ways to make your home healthy is an essential part of life in dense urban areas. Plants offer many beneficial factors that can not only add beauty to your home but also help recycle the air within it to create a healthy atmosphere. Consider these plants to purify the air in your home:
Spider Plant
This popular indoor houseplant is commonly seen on desks and in offices thanks to its variegated natural beauty. The white and green colored leaves grow quickly and can withstand much neglect from caregivers. Spider Plants remove formaldehyde from home and are non-toxic making them a great addition to homes with children or pets. Plant them in a hanging basket to encourage downward growth as well.
Boston Fern
One of the most iconic houseplants is this widely used fern which has shown as one of the best plants to remove toxins from the air. Ferns are beautiful with their many small leaves and can grow quite large indoors.
While a Boston Fern is excellent as a houseplant, they do require a little more attention than others. You’ll need to water it regularly depending on your home’s moisture and humidity levels. Some homeowners have to spritz their ferns with water on a daily basis for optimal growth as well.
Lady Palm
This beautiful small tree is a good option for homes due to its compact size. The Lady Palm features fans of leaves that add charm to any area of the house. The plant does well at removing ammonia from your home, found in many textiles and cleaning supplies.
Gerbera Daisy
Not only is the Gerbera Daisy a favorite cut flower, but it also is effective in removing toxins from the air. This plant is a popular one for homeowners as it overflows with beauty that instantly cheers up any space. Gerbera Daisies should be placed in a warm spot of the home, like above a fireplace or near a heating vent, as they prefer areas that are above 70°F. Choose to use them in warm bathrooms or well-used areas of the home away from windows or doors that could provide a draft.
Snake Plant
As a hardy succulent, this plant is an excellent option for those beginner gardeners who have little houseplant English Ivy experience. Snake Plants require little Many homeowners think that Ivy attention and can do well in multiple isn’t an excellent houseplant choice due light and temperature conditions. he Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) will be aglow as 2018 comes to a close as it celebrates with its annual “noon” year’s eve party, “Countdown to 12!” The annual family-friendly event allows visitors to take part in all the traditional elements of the holiday, including confetti and counting down to the new year, on a schedule designed for children…and exhausted parents. Activities start at noon on Monday, Dec. 31 and feature themed crafts, face painting, a DJled dance party and two ball drops. “Neon ‘19” is the theme of the 2018 year-ending celebration at the museum. The museum’s 25th birthday has been front and center for our programming this year,” explained LICM Director of Education & Visitor Experience Aimee Terzulli. “We wanted a theme that not only captured the party atmosphere associated with New Year’s celebrations, but also that ‘highlighted’ an event that has be-come a Long Island holiday tradition for families. Neon represents the brightness and excitement of the event, while serving as a bit of nostalgia for many of the parents in attendance.” LICM created “Countdown to 12!” in 2005 to provide families with the opportunity to celebrate this special occasion together. Family-focused New Year’s celebrations were lacking in the area, but families looking to celebrate certainly were not. Countdown to 12! has become an immensely popular visitation day on the museum’s calendar. During this year’s celebration, the museum will cross (appropriately enough) the 25,000 mark in visitor attendance for the day. The lucky visitor will receive a family membership to mark the museum milestone. Families have the opportunity to take part in all the traditional elements associated with year-end revelry—with the simple substitution of “mid-day” instead of “midnight.” The celebration starts and concludes with Times Squarestyle ball drops (noon and 4 p.m.). In between those iconic moments, families will be able to design neon “highlight hats” and “shimmer and shake” noisemakers, craft commemorative “superstar necklaces,”

An Uncommon Holiday Gift Idea BY LINDA WILLIAMS
I
editorial@antonmediagroup.com
n this season of giving, many people are either putting their list together while others have already begun shopping for their gifts. Whatever holiday gift you are in search of, we are all on a quest to find the perfect gift. Buying presents that people will not use is a waste for everyone involved so we want to make our gifts meaningful. Some may even experience financial distress in search of the perfect gift. So how can we find an appropriate gift without exceeding our budget? We naturally think of giving material gifts but what about ideas for gifts that are not physical? Not to say that these types of gifts are not good, but an intangible gift can have far more significance. Many years ago, on Mother’s Day, my daughter gave me the gift of cleaning the house for me. It was one of the most thoughtful gifts I ever received because she performed a service for me that I would usually do, which gave me time to relax. Similar gifts include cooking a meal for someone, doing their grocery shopping or running their errands for one day. For those who have children, offering to babysit for a day or evening or picking up their children from school and keeping them for the afternoon are also great ideas. These gifts can be written out in a holiday
card or, if you are creative, you can make a fancy gift card. Other non-physical gifts include” gift certificates to a spa, the movies, restaurants, nail salon, car wash, grocery store and the list goes on and on. Most establishments have gift certificates, so this is a simple process. I would suggest going directly to the establishment if possible, instead of buying the card from CVS or online as most have nice boxes or envelopes to place the cards in. The key to intangible gift giving is to personalize the gift. Think about the person’s likes or hobbies and listen to them to get ideas. You still have some time to consider what gift to give. Refrain from giving general gift cards (Amazon, Visa, etc.), as they are impersonal. I would recommend these gifts only as a last resort or if you want to give a gift to someone you don’t know very well or for the person who has everything. Giving a gift of your time and service or, one that gives the recipient time to relax and enjoy themselves is priceless. Give gifts this year that will leave a lasting memory and will touch the heart of those you care about in a special and personal way. Linda J. Williams, M.Ed., D/B/A Etiquette and Writing Consultancy is a certified etiquette consultant. For more information, visit www.etiquetteand writingconsultancy.com.

THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
Your creativity takes many forms this year. A team effort will kick off this era with gusto, and in 10 weeks you’ll fly on a solo mission, expressing what you couldn’t quite collaboratively. More highlights of the solar return include: a connection with animals that leads you to connect with interesting people as well, mind expansion through a different sort of media, and an organized and deliberate lifestyle change with such positive results you might consider teaching it to others.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’ll encounter those who are slow to open up, which is something they cannot help. It takes courage for wounded souls to love and connect, as there’s no guarantee that the people we love and trust won’t accidentally cause us pain. Have patience and adjust your expectations. It will all prove worthwhile. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). We are sensation-seeking creatures. Oddly, the negative sensations can be just as addicting as the positive sensations. Be aware of this dynamic so you can immediately move from things that don’t feel good to you instead of sticking around long enough to make them seem OK. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). In every area of life, significant discoveries are often made by outsiders -- people whose ignorance blinds them to the limitations and rules that insiders have learned to respect. You’ll make such a discovery this week, and your insights will have impact and meaning, once they are fully understood. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Can’t bring yourself to forgive? You’re not alone. Many don’t believe forgiveness is the way. And yet, for life to work better, something needs to change. What about learning more about the issue? By coming to a deeper understanding, knowing and predicting better, you open your life to happiness. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Good news, the outside world will comply once you resolve the trouble between you and you. Get on your own side. Greater communication between body, mind, spirit and the various agendas of the ego will bring you in compliance with your own rules. Once you align within yourself, you’ll become as powerful as any group. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). For the time being, it’s a powerful move to simply accept things as they are. Something strange happens as you release yourself and others from your expectations. A gentle wind comes to blow away the fog from your thinking. New clarity will show you the path, all lit up and singing. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Clashes of interest will disallow you to be fully devoted to yourself and your group simultaneously. Surely, being constantly on-call and in-service to your loved ones isn’t your entire identity. Here’s the lie that needs unraveling: Your usefulness to others shouldn’t make you any more or less worthy of love. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You’ve worked throughout your life to become tougher and less sensitive to small stresses. Now it’s actually better to go in the opposite direction. Noticing what you dislike, what makes you uncomfortable and what causes you to dip into your well of self-control will be key knowledge to factor into your success plan. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’re a quick study and that will come in handy this week as life throws you onto a learning curve or two. You’re not the first person to have to put this together and it’s all laid out for you in the instructions. So follow directions instead of going strictly on instinct and you’ll save yourself a lot of time. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Check in on your feelings in the spirit of openness and tolerance. To demand that your emotional world makes total sense is just silly. The very nature of feelings is irrational. But even the most illogical notions can be truth-based. Extremely workable and rational plans will spring from the irrational. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Studies suggest as many as 75 percent of fast-food customers are omitting the “please” and “thank you” these days, though such niceties grease the wheels that circulate civilized society. You can’t imagine what magnificent outcome your unfailing proliferation of good manners will contribute to. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Some form of the plan you’re currently conjuring up will eventually bring a flood of prosperity and success. The thing to ask now: “Is this something I’d really do?” Because even the best plan is only going to work if you work it. Setting yourself up with small tasks you can easily win at will give you the best start.

AROUND NASSAU
Curran Restores Tuition Assistance For Volunteer Fire Service Members
N
assau County Executive Laura Curran recently held a signing of a bi-partisan emergency resolution that was unanimously approved by the Nassau County Legislature to restore funding for tuition assistance to eligible members of the Nassau County volunteer fire service pursuing an education at Nassau Community College, for the remaining 2018 semester and academic year of 2019. “Nothing is more important to us than the public safety of Nassau County’s residents. Our volunteer fire service members are saving lives on the frontlines every day, and it is essential that we support them in every way we can,” said Curran. “This grant provided funding that was an essential tool in recruitment of new volunteer fire service members. I am disappointed that Nassau County was not awarded this critical funding, and I will continue to work with our partners in Federal government to secure these dollars. I
am signing this resolution to ensure that our volunteer fire service has the support they need to increase retention and recruitment and can continue their brave and selfless work.” “I am proud to have sponsored funding of the SAFER resolution that reinstitutes the tuition assistance incentive for qualified Fire Fighters and Emergency Responders at Nassau
County Community College,” said Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello. “This program will encourage recruitment new Fire Fighters and First Responders and is an educational incentive for the men and women who will avail themselves of this opportunity.” The legislation was spearheaded by Legislators Siela Bynoe and Delia DeRiggi-Whitton. “Every day, volunteer firefighters and EMTs across Nassau County put their lives on the line to protect our communities. Ensuring these courageous citizens have every opportunity to pursue a brighter future through the opportunities afforded by the SAFER grant program is the least we can do to express our appreciation,” Bynoe, the lead sponsor of the measure, said. “When the call for help comes, Nassau County’s first responders are always there for us in our hour of need. That’s why it is so important for the
Nassau County Legislature to do all we can to support these brave volunteers,” said DeRiggi-Whitton. “I applaud Legislator Bynoe for her diligence in addressing this matter and thank my fellow legislators and County Executive Curran for supporting this legislation.” This funding was previously provided through a $1.6 million multi-year Federal grant from the Department of Homeland Security awarded in 2014 known as “Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response.” An average of about 200 students have participated each semester since the fall 2015 semester, when the grant began. Curran was joined by members of the Nassau County Legislature, Nassau County Fire Service Academy, and the Nassau County Volunteer Fire Service, and Chief Fire Marshal Scott Tusa, and Commissioner of the Office of Emergency Management Steven Morelli. —Anton Media Group

A Clam
For All Seasons
DJ’s Clam Shack keeps it fresh all winter long BY STEVE MOSCO smosco@antonmediagroup.com
N
o one knows for sure how it happened or who did it, but somewhere along the way it was decided that seafood is strictly summertime eats. Across the south and north shores of Long Island, restaurants that specialize in ocean fare either close for the gray winter season or
brave the cold, diminishing returns and remain open. One local eatery keeping their lines in the water during the so-called down season is DJ’s Clam Shack in Wantagh—an oasis of fresh seafood making a strong case that this cuisine should be enjoyed all year round. Deep diving into New England and Southernstyle seafood, DJ’s slings lobster rolls, fried clams, crab cakes, fish tacos and much more. And even beyond the food, owner Paul Riggio and his team
Garlic-steamed Little Neck Clams
Blackened Mahi Mahi taco have created a family atmosphere on Sunrise Highway. Sit in the restaurant for no less than five minutes and you’ll witness customers enthusiastically greet Riggio and his team as if they were longtime friends. “The town is just fantastic to us,” said Wall Street escapee Riggio in the diminutive, laid-back eatery. “We have a neighborhood vibe and we look to treat people right the first time they come in.” And when they come in, customers are greeted with an immediate whiff from the up-front grill, where manager Anthony Gentile can be found butter-grilling split-top buns and dropping conch fritters into the deep fryer. When asked what the must-eat items are at DJ’s, Riggio and Gentile don’t hesitate even for a second—it’s the lobster roll. Using the tenderest chunks of lobster—specifically, knuckle and claw meat—the lobster rolls are served two ways: the cold, mayo-based New England style, and the warm, butter-forward, Connecticut-style. The cold roll can be ordered light or heavy on the mayo, which is delightfully seasoned with tarragon and finished with celery. And while both incarnations put that signature lobster lusciousness fully on display, it is the opinion of this writer that DJ’s warm, buttered lobster roll is nothing short of the food version of a religious experience. Butter and lobster are best friends, and adding the flat-top grilled toasty roll to the equation elicits groans of eater’s pleasure immediately upon the first bite. Using the knuckle and claw in the roll is an ingenious maneuver, as that meat far surpasses the highly regarded tail portion in the aforementioned tenderness, but also in sweetness and overall flavor. Another highly recommended dish is the garlic-steamed Little Neck clams. Featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives when the show visited DJ’s original location in Key West, FL, the clams are steamed in a skillet with plenty of garlic, celery and surprisingly complementary jalapeños and served with garlic bread that absolutely screams to be dipped into the juice pooled at the bottom of the dish. Clams also star in DJ’s creamy New England clam chowder, a downright luxuriously silky soup loaded with perfectly sized middle necks. Other soups are on a rotating

Grilled garlic shrimp scampi roll basis, like the lobster bisque, a smokier-than-usual version that is a superb antidote to the cold chill outside. Other basket favorites at DJ’s include baked clams, kung pow calamari, shrimp scampi, Ipswich fried clams and a split grilled hot dog for landlubbers. Then there’s the tacos, which range from Mahi Mahi to shrimp and chicken and roast pork. All items can be grilled, blackened or fried, but the cooks highly recommended the Mahi Mahi in the blackened fashion. Dipped in melted butter and dredged in a blend of herbs and spices, the blackened Mahi Mahi taco packs some spicy heat thanks to Cajun mayo, but it is mellowed out nicely by pickled onions and cooling cabbage. As for fried fare, DJ’s drops plenty into the fryer,
like fish fingers, shrimp, clam strips and the southern-in-origin conch fritters, which are seldom seen on Long Island menus. The fritters are fried balls of doughy loveliness, dotted with peppers and conch. Great for dipping, the conch fritters come with a key lime honey mustard and a smoky little number dubbed “Cowboy Sauce.” Specials also abound at DJ’s and range from fresh seafood marinara over linguine to locally caught flounder. Meanwhile, the first Wednesday of every month is a party at DJs, with live music and fresh shucking of Maris Stella Blue Point oysters. It might be cold outside, but it’s an endless summer at DJs. pider-Man, the web slinger himself, is back on the big screen in Sony and Marvel’s newest computer animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The movie, which features different Spider Men throughout various dimensions
including Spider-Woman, Spider-Ham and SpiderNoir, centers on African-American and Latino Spider-Man Miles Morales, who is voiced by actor and singer Shameik Moore. “Miles is young, he’s a kid and he’s given all this responsibility out of nowhere,” said Moore. “He has to learn super fast, but he’s really creative, smart,
funny and witty, and he has a great upbringing. His mother and father love him very much, which makes him unique already in the Spider-Man universe.” This movie, according to Moore, is a coming-ofage story for Miles. With the famous catchphrase ‘With great power comes great responsibility,’ Miles learns from and teams up with various Spider Men to

save the universe from Kingpin, an evil crime lord. To say that Moore wanted this role is an understatement. While filming the 2015 movie Dope, Moore’s castmate Kiersey Clemons gave him a journal in which he wrote ‘I am Miles Morales. I am Spider-Man,’ manifesting the thought into existence. “Out of all the kids auditioning for this movie, I was chosen,” said Moore. “How important is [the role] to me? I mean how important is it for Miles to save the universe?” The character of Miles Morales draws some inspiration from notable people. In 2011, Miles was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, with Bendis and Marvel past editor-in-chief Axel Alonso drawing inspiration from both U.S. President Barack Obama and American actor and rapper Donald Glover. “My approach was that I didn’t think of either one of those people to be honest,” explained Moore. “I definitely had my own approach with it. If Miles was created based off of Barack Obama and Donald Glover, I’m happy to be playing that character. They’re both very inspirational people, not just to our culture, but to the world in general right now. They have a voice, they’re powerful and they made a difference. They had an impact and I can only respect people like that who came before me and laid the ground for me to walk on or in our case to run on.” What’s even more unique about the movie isn’t the fact that different Spider Men are sharing the big screen together, but the animation, which according to Moore, is jaw dropping. “The animation that has been created for this is extremely unique,” said Moore. “You can look at the

trailer and the trailer’s great, but I don’t think it does the movie justice. I like the trailer—I really do, but the movie…is jaw dropping. It’s one of those movies that I am so thankful to be involved in. I can’t take credit for what it looks like, but I can say that the directors and writers did a great job of making sure that I didn’t let down the fans with my performance. I wanted to make people feel something in the movie theaters with my voice.” Not only is Moore a talented actor, but he’s also an up and coming musician. “I started dancing first and then I got into making music when I was 13 or 14,” he said. “Acting was generally the same and didn’t just pop up overnight. It took work, but acting took its own life. People saw me as an actor as a kid, but I wanted to do music. Even now I’m still making music and people still know me
as an actor [for now].” Moore simply said that he wants to naturally express himself in a creative way where he can get his creative expression out. “I want people to see it, hear it and be inspired by it,” Moore said. “I want people to respect it. It’s just something naturally in me that’s there.” Moore has quite the year coming up next year with two movies; Cut Throat City, which is directed by RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, and Pretenders, which is directed by James Franco, coming out. Moore also has a mix tape coming out next year called Worth The Risk that he wrote and co-produced. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, John Mulaney, Nicolas Cage and Lily Tomlin, slings into theaters nationwide on Dec. 14.

avid Crosby is back with another masterpiece. Well into his eighth decade, hot on the heels of his fourth album in as many years, the Byrds and CSN(Y) co-founder is flying high, soaring to new creative heights with Here If You Listen, a collaborative effort with Becca Stevens, Michelle Willis and Michael League. The quartet originally convened for 2016’s Lighthouse album and followed with a critically-acclaimed series of tours. Where Lighthouse and Here If You Listen diverge is that the former was approached and billed as a Crosby solo album, while the new release is a true group effort. All four artists contribute their unique sensibilities to both lyrics
and music, and the result is nothing short of brilliance. Consider Crosby’s compatriots: Michael League, mastermind of Snarky Puppy and myriad other musical projects; Becca Stevens, a singer-songwriter who represents what a Crosby/Joni Mitchell “soul child” may well have sounded like; and Michelle Willis, a Toronto-born singer-songwriter once described by Crosby as sounding “like God on a good day.” Fans and critics alike have been increasingly finding themselves at a loss for words to describe just how astounding the past four years have been for Crosby, yet no one is more astounded—or grateful—than the artist himself. His youthful voice is filled with the fearless liberation of one whose understanding of the value of time, of the joy and power of music,
is at a lifetime high. At 77, David Crosby continues to speak up and sing out. Speaking with unmistakable warmth and appreciation for his current collaborative configuration, Crosby says, “It’s a magical chemistry. What happened, man, when we did that first Lighthouse record, I was just completely knocked out with working with Michael as the producer and writing with Michael, and then singing with Becca and Michelle. I went to them this time and said, ‘Listen, I want to do a record, but I don’t want
to do another solo record with Michael producing and you guys helping me. I want to do a four-of-us record, where the four of us write and the four of us sing as a group.’ And they said, ‘Are you sure?” And I said, ‘Yes, I’m absolutely sure. There’s a chemistry here that’s a thing I want to follow.’ And they said, ‘Oh, boy! Whoopee!’ and they jumped in with both feet. They are fiercely talented people. Elaborating further, he added, “Each of them is a completely individual writer, not like anybody else I’ve ever heard.

isn’t the damage to the belief in our democracy, which is even worse; it’s the fact that by not doing anything about global warming, by denying any report that gets in the way of profits, we are doing a disservice to the entire human race…every single human being on the planet when we’re supposed to be a developed nation with the intelligence and the technology to lead the way to fixing it, we’re doing this awful, backsliding, stupid, ignorant move, and we’re doing harm to the entire planet and everybody on it. Not a good thing.” Despite his frenetic writing, recording, and touring schedule, Crosby wishes there were more hours in the day to fit in yet another project: the return of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. “I wish we were! You gotta remember, the last time we got together was to sing Neil’s ‘Let’s Impeach the President for Lying’ which is a perfect song to be singing right now! We were just singing it a little too early; we didn’t realize we were gonna have a liar of this proportion to work with. I wish we would; I don’t think it’s gonna happen, but I get messages every day on Twitter and Facebook saying, ‘Will you please stop bickering with each other and do your job? Be our voice; we need it now.’ And I agree, and I would like to. But it’s up to Neil, it’s always been up to Neil, and it’s up to Neil now.” Questioned about the aforementioned schedule, Crosby is quick to explain. “You look at your life, you know that you have a certain amount of time; anybody my age knows that they’ve got a certain amount of time. And you think to yourself, okay, how do I spend this time? To me, there’s only one contribution I can make. There’s only one place I can do anything personally; me, to make anything better. And that’s to be doing my job, to be making the music, the best music I can make, as fast as I can do it.” Visit www.islandzoneupdate. blogspot.com/ for the complete conversation.

So, what I get from them is creative juice. They are incredible artists, all three of them. Michael can play anything well, and he’s a wonderful composer of music and such a good writer of words. Becca and Michelle are completely different from each other and two of the best singer-songwriters I’ve encountered. I found Joni Mitchell; I do know what I’m doing.” Noting his reputation for bringing a childlike enthusiasm to every musical project he’s ever been involved with, Crosby admitted, “Yeah, I am enthusiastic. I love this, man, I love singing! I love music! I’m not doing it to get famous or rich, [or to] get laid or anything; I’m doing it because I absolutely adore doing it.” Crosby recently toured Europe for the first time in several years. I wondered about the vibe over there and how Europeans feel about what’s happening on this side of the pond? The response was unequivocally direct. “Every conversation started off with them being completely aghast and worried as hell because, obviously, Western Europe is very, very strongly linked to the United States, and they used to be able to count on us to be their buddy. Now, we’ve got an idiot running our country and he’s doing great harm to that relationship. So, every conversation I had over there started with ‘What the hell is going on, and how did you let it get there?’ And it’s embarrassing, and it’s tough. I made jokes about it, I tell people we’re all gonna wear a Canadian maple leaf on our shoulders and [say] we’re Canadians, because everybody likes Canadians! But it’s very tough in Europe right now to be an American; it’s embarrassing.” Crosby is a passionate believer in the artist’s role in creating awareness of both social and political issues. “We’re human beings and we live here; we have a responsibility to our families, to our children, to our children’s children. The worst part in what this current administration is doing isn’t the damage to our democracy, which is awful, and it

or the first time in three years, the New York Islanders are playing regular season NHL games at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, their home for 43 years before their departure for the Barclays Center in 2015. Their matchup came against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Dec. 1, which ended with a 3-2 victory for the home team, and was the first of 21 games that the Islanders are scheduled to play at the stadium this season. “It’s absolutely fantastic to be back,” said legendary right winger Bobby Nystrom. “I mean, we have so many memories here. Not just on the ice, but with the fans too and they are going to be absolutely thrilled to be back here.” The coliseum went under significant renovations while the Islanders were away. The size of the stadium was reduced to only 13,000 seats. The concrete exterior was completely revamped in addition to changes to the arena’s interior. However, in the opinion of former Islanders left-winger Clark Gillies, the vast changes didn’t hurt the feeling of being back home. “Never seen the old place look so good,” said Gillies. “The fans are the big winners here. This place is gorgeous. They’ve done a lot of great work on it and I think everyone is going to be thrilled. It’s a whole different experience here for the fans

meet NHL requirements, specifically investing in ice plant redundancy and dehumidification, and media and broadcast cabling infrastructure. The renovations were completed prior to the team’s first game back. “For the fans, the seats are a big part of it,” said Nystrom. “And for the players, the locker rooms, I mean you could fit two of our locker rooms from back then into these today. I think the fact that the structure itself is similar is great. You want to have that noise factor. When you are out there playing on the ice, you hear everything. And the fact that they left it the way it was, I think that is the most important thing.” The most important part about getting the team back on the island is to reel fans back in that haven’t been pleased about their presence in Brooklyn. The hope is that the excitement of playing at the coliseum will make the transition to Belmont easier. “To be honest, I think there may have been a little separation between the fans and the team over the last few years, but playing back at the coliseum for 20 or so games a year is going to bring the two closer together,” said Gillies. “And it will be a great building block before the team moves into the new building.” “The fact of the matter is, we have the greatest fans, the loudest fans, and you just can’t beat the atmosphere at the coliseum when things are going well,” said Nystrom.
