The Other Side Of Las Vegas T BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

he state of Nevada is famous for many things, namely, the vibrant city of Las Vegas. But over the past decade or so, the city has seen a turnaround in the demographic that visits, as Las Vegas is now a destination for family vacations, with hidden gems that even some locals don’t know about. You can spend a full day walking the strip (getting in all that exercise to burn off the calories from the amazing food you’ll be eating) and visiting each hotel, one more grand than the last. And the kids enjoy the art and activities as well. Explore the Venetian hotel and Palazzo as you get a taste of Italy. Walk through Saint Mark’s Square and stop for gelato before hopping into a gondola for a ride down the Grand Canal. Pop over to Paris Las Vegas and get a small sense of what it would be like to ride the Eiffel Tower after enjoying crepes and croissants at the many cafés and eateries inside. The Bellagio Hotel continues to attract visitors to its stunning Botanical Gardens and Conservatory, whose display changes with the seasons. Upstairs, guests will find a slew of restaurants and Bellagio Patisserie, a bakery shop that offers gelato, crepes, macarons, chocolates and other sweet treats. And you can’t miss the giant chocolate fountain that flows throughout the store. As for entertainment, no trip to Las Vegas is complete without a spectacular show of some kind. There’s Celine Dion at Caesar’s Palace (her residency ends in June so get your tickets now),

See the Blue Man Group at Luxor Hotel & Casino

Blue Man Group at Luxor Hotel and Casino, singer, comedian and celebrity impersonator Terry Fator at Mirage and many more. Lady Gaga and Britney Spears are planning on coming to the newly renovated and ultra stunning Park MGM Hotel in 2019 (be sure to stop in for cocktails at Juniper Cocktail Lounge) and across the street from the Park MGM Hotel is the Las Vegas Knights arena, the hockey team taking the NHL by storm. Catch a magic show at MGM Grand with David Copperfield and if acrobatics and performing arts are your thing, there is literally a dozen Cirque du Soleil shows to choose from that span the Las Vegas strip. In the mood for something really different? How about going on a construction site for the day and operating a big CAT at Dig This! or treating your

taste buds to a fabulous foodie tour of the Las Vegas strip, visiting the stunning art installations and displays in the dozens of hotels that dot Las Vegas Boulevard? If you want more adventure in the great outdoors, head to Boulder City and join the Flightlinez crew as they zipline across the Mojave Desert. There is an entire side of Las Vegas that lies beneath the surface of bright lights and gambling and it’s all waiting for you and your family. Editors Note: a special thank you to the Las Vegas tourism board at LVCVA for the recommendations and itinerary of this trip and to Presidential Limousine for transportation. as Vegas is associated with many things: a vibrant party scene, gambling, world class restaurants and some of the best shopping in the country. For decades, Las Vegas has seemingly been an adult playground, but recent years have seen a surge in activities for the whole family from children to kids to teens. No longer catering to one specific demographic, come and discover a whole new side of Nevada’s city of lights.

‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ Sign No trip to Las Vegas is complete without seeing the iconic sign that welcomes visitors to the city. Located just south of the strip, the 25-foot tall roadside pole design reads “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada.” On

the back side, which is lesser known, it reads “Drive Carefully Come Back Soon.” At night, the internally lit sign is illuminated with a border of flashing and chasing yellow incandescent bulbs. A great tourist attraction that has become a piece of Vegas history. Located at 5100 S. Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89119

Ethel M Chocolates As Forrest Gump once said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” In the case of Ethel M Chocolates, guests know exactly what they’re in for. The family-owned gourmet chocolate company is owned by Mars, Inc. and was named after the mother of Forrest Mars, Sr. For the past 38 years, Ethel M Chocolates has been producing the highest quality of chocolate and sweet treats, with unique flavors that beg for more than just a taste. Tammy Jo French is the tasting room chocolatier at Ethel M Chocolates and she recommends that every experience begins with a chocolate tasting. For adults 21 and older, they can partake in a chocolate and wine tasting, which pairs four types of wine from light to dark with white, milk and dark chocolates for $25. “For chocoholics, I recommend the 48-piece box that really encompasses everything. For those who don’t like chocolate, I always suggest the pecan brittle,” said French, of the number one seller that is a crunchy, crumbly and buttery brittle. “Our seasonal and holiday flavors include pecan pie and pumpkin pie for fall and liquor chocolates, like eggnog with a spiced rum, my personal favorite crème de menthe and a peppermint bark for Christmas. Every two years, the chef at Ethel M’s comes out with a new bonbon, often bringing back a retired flavor and creating an original sweet as well. Flavors

like cherry cordial with brandy, prickly pear, champagne truffle, pumpkin spice nut and a cognac ganache truffle have been added to the chocolate box. While the chocolate tasting is the way to go (prices vary between $6-$15 for children and adults and packages are available for groups), the company also offers guided tours of the factory and garden, which is the largest cactus garden of its kind in the world, featuring more than 300 species of plants. “I think people should come here if they want to get away from the city, especially for the best chocolate,” said French. “It’s just magical.” For more information about Ethel M Chocolates or to place an order, call 877-617-3957 or visit www.ethelm.com. Downtown Murals Tour Every year artists from all over the world (Brazil, France, Lithuania and America just to name a few), are invited to create a mural for the Life is Beautiful festival, an urban arts and music festival. ave you ever passed a construction site with yellow excavators, big CATS and bulldozers and thought to yourself ‘How cool would it be to actually be able to drive one of those?’ It turns out, you can. New Zealand-born Ed Mumm is the founder of Dig This LLC, a hands-on excavating experience in Las Vegas unlike any other where people from 8 to 108 can operate heavy machinery just as if they were on a real construction site. When asked how he came up with the concept, Mumm said that it was from his own personal experience. “I’ve always been fascinated with

heavy equipment and never had the opportunity to get on and play in it, so I had to do something about it myself,” said Mumm of Dig This!, which opened in 2007 and stemmed from when he and his wife built their house in Colorado. “I did some excavating work myself and after a couple hours in the excavator I thought, ‘if I’m having this good a time, I imagine other people would enjoy coming to do this as well.’” With two locations currently available in Mumm’s homeland of New Zealand (2017) and Las Vegas (2011)—there are plans to franchise in California, Florida, Dubai and Australia, Dig This! is an adventure that caters to every group from a bucket list item and birthday party to corporate

the motions very quickly and if a child can do it, so can you. Once given the basic tutelage in operation, the fun began. Brian instructed me to begin digging a large hole in the dirt, after which I would build my own pile. Next, I drove the excavator back and forth, picking up three tires with which to construct my tire pyramid, stacking each one meticulously so as not to topple over. After my pyramid was constructed, Brian gave me a rubber ball that I was to scoop into the excavator’s bucket and drop into the top of the tire pyramid. The last task for the course was to maneuver the Big CAT atop a hill and pop a wheelie, which makes for one cool photo opp. Prices start at $169 and go up to $269 depending on the package and length of time. Mumm said that plans are underway next year for kids’ rides on real Caterpillar equipment and tiny excavators for children 4 and older. “When you think outside the box, the earth will move,” said Mumm. We drive past construction sites every day and wish we can have a go at it, but there have never been opportunities to do it,” he said. “We have eight instructors and around 10 machines available for operation.” Here’s how it works: Visitors are shown the course on a small scale diorama model and given safety instructions in a separate room before heading outside to the main event. It is there where they will learn the basic commands and controls of the levers and switches in the machine they will be operating (I was in the excavator). A neon yellow vest, helmet and set of headphones is given to each visitor as they climb into the machine for the duration of an hour. My instructor was Brian and he couldn’t have been more educational and fun to work with. First came the warm up. At Brian’s instruction, I familiarized myself with the joysticks and buttons, learning how to move the machine forward and backward, spin it around and raise, lower and open the mouth of the crane. It may sound confusing, but you learn

It is very low key with bars and restaurants and is a much more casual part of town,” said local Devin Aaron, who was extremely knowledgeable about the revitalization of Downtown Las Vegas, helping to shine a spotlight on such a unique part of the town. The one-hour walking tour takes visitors around corners, where on nearly every building, there are brightly

colored vivid murals from the Life Is Beautiful installation. This tour is family friendly and a great way to teach children the beauty and appreciation of the arts on a massive scale they will no doubt find enjoyable. “The murals remain all year-round and can stay for a few years before they are repainted with another,” said Aaron. “A lot of the businesses are very willing to have the side of their building painted in support of the arts.” Another fun stop is the Downtown

Container Park, an offbeat shopping center built from shipping containers that also features eateries, galleries and a courtyard with a playground. marriage to Janis Freedman, a Canadian graduate school student. If there is a heroine from this volume, it is the fifth Mrs. Bellow. Janis gave the elderly Bellow a daughter, allowing the man to finally enjoy family life full-time. She also nursed him through a bout of food poisoning that nearly ended his life. Longevity helped. Bellow continued to craft shorter fiction into his 70s and 80. As important, he made new friends and boosters,

especially the British novelist Martin Amis and the critic James Woods, while rekindling a friendship with his contemporary, Phillip Roth. The strife is not just family life, but Bellow’s encounters with political correctness. Mr. Sammler’s Planet earned him the enmity of major critics, similar to the fate suffered by Norman Mailer after publishing The Prisoner of Sex, his 1971 broadside against feminism. For Bellow, it got worse—and just on the strength of a single statement. In 1987, Bellow’s colleague at the University of Chicago, Allan Bloom, had published his best-selling critique of higher education, The Closing Of The American Mind. The New York Times sent Atlas, then a staff writer for the Sunday magazine, to write a profile. That year was also when multiculturalism with its “hey, ho, Western Civs has got to go” war cry hit shore. Atlas broached the controversy with his future subject, who joked: “Who is the Proust of the

Paupans? The Tolstoy of the Zulus? I’d be glad to read him.” All hell broke loose. Bellow had angered the gods. The controversy lingered, fueled by criticism by Alfred Kazin in the latter’s latest memoir. In 1994, Bellow was forced to defend himself in a New York Times op-ed essay. “Few words by Bellow have done more to alienate liberal opinion than these or to banish his fiction from college syllabuses,” Leader asserts. Say what? Consider such a syllabus. No room for “Looking For Mr. Green” or “The Old System” or “Something to Remember Me By?” No generous samples of The Adventures of Augie March, Henderson The Rain King, Herzog or Humboldt’s Gift? It’s like excluding the works of Hawthorne, Twain or Melville, Hemingway and Faulkner. What of it? Nassau County has the top public library system in the nation. Plus, reader will always have Amazon and their trusty credit card. Down with academia! Bellow lives.

lanting Fields Foundation recently announced that Gina Wouters will join the foundation as executive director as of Jan. 1, 2019. Wouters replaces Henry Joyce, who is retiring after having served in the role for more than 10 years. “We are thrilled to welcome someone of Gina’s caliber to help take us to the next level and realize our ambitious development goals. Gina’s experience and expertise are broad and deep and match everything we were looking for in the position: strategic leader and manager, engaged ambassador, accomplished scholar in the field and with a genuine passion for our mission.” “We are grateful for Henry Joyce’s valuable contributions to the Foundation over the past decade, particularly in

returning the interior of Coe Hall to its former splendor through an extensive furniture acquisition plan, and in the expansion and enhancement of public events,” said Hal Davidson, president of the board of trustees of Planting Fields Foundation. “We will miss him, but we are

extremely eager to have Gina on board.” “I am so excited to have the opportunity to lead an organization with the potential to have major impact on, not only the local and regional New York community, but on a national and international level as well. Planting Fields has all the attributes necessary to evolve as a world class site and a relevant and engaging destination for a broad constituency. I very much look forward to repositioning the organization, advancing art scholarship and best museum practices at this extraordinary and important historical treasure,” said Wouters. Wouters spent a large part of her professional career at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami since 2007, serving as Curator from 2013-2018.

At Vizcaya, she oversaw all curatorial initiatives, including research, exhibitions, development and implementation of the furnishing plan for the interior. In addition, she developed related programming and managed and negotiated the reacquisition of original Vizcaya objects housed at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Wouters was also oversaw the Contemporary Arts Program (CAP), which commissions site-specific work from living artists. Most recently, Wouters served as vice president of Museum Affairs and Chief Curator at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens in Nashville, where she led the artistic, scholarly and educational vision of the museum, and was

rights of our employees than has ever been done before.” Curran’s policy improvements include substantial enhancements in provisions relating to sexual harassment prevention. Nassau County will now have a separate complaint form for sexual harassment and prompt investigations into allegations of discrimination or harassment. The policy also protects employees who report harassment and/or discrimination from retaliation. And for the first time in Nassau County’s history, it is explicitly stated in the EEO policy that the protected classification of “sex” protects employees against discrimination based on “gender identity, transgender persons and gender dysphoria.” The county’s commitment to safe-guarding its employees

also includes an interactive training plan to educate all employees in identifying and reporting instances of discrimination and/or sexual harassment. This plan will enhance the county’s established EEO and Anti-Harassment training. “We need to ensure a safe and respectful workplace,” said Curran. “It’s our job to protect the civil rights of our employees. That is responsible, ethical government.” “Earlier this year, I was

proud to champion and secure passage of sweeping reforms to Nassau County’s sexual harassment policies. Today, we take another important step toward eradicating the scourge of sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination,” Legislator Drucker said. “I am hopeful that we can parlay this momentum into enshrining protections for transgender residents into Nassau County’s human rights law.” “Under the bold leadership of County Executive Curran,

Nassau County has made many important strides towards becoming a safer, more inclusive place to live and work,” said Dr. Kilmnick. “Nassau County has an obligation to its residents to ensure people of all gender identities have the same equal protections under the law,” said Kaplan. “This policy is the first in Nassau County’s history to explicitly protect transgender people and it is hopefully the first of many policies that will be introduced to end discrimination against this vulnerable population.” These advancements conform to the new State Department of Labor Model Sexual Harassment Prevention Policy issued earlier this year. “This new policy is now in effect and will be fully enforced,” said Curran. —Anton Media Group

HELP JONATHAN BEAT BRAIN CANCER

Jonathan Fernandez, a bright 16 year-old boy, has a aggressive form of Stage 4 brain cancer, a type called GBM (Gliblastoma Multiforma) which has a poor prognosis. Jonathan has been accepted into the Duke University brain tumor treatment program. This is his last treatment option. We are trying to raise money to help the Fernandez family cover travel expenses, lodging, loss of his parents’ wages and various treatment costs if insurance is not accepted. Any amount is helpful. We also ask for your prayers. As a community, we can help his family, which you may already know. Jonathan’s dad, Juan is one of the staff members of the beloved Biscuits & Barbeque in Mineola.

A great day out for history buffs and those interested in a little education, take a tour of the Hoover Dam. Named one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th century, the Hoover Dam continues to draw massive crowds 80 years after its creation. Named

after President Herbert Hoover, the Hoover Dam is located in Black Canyon, just 40 minutes outside of Las Vegas. Two tours of the dam are available and well worth the time and money spent. For $11 per person (discounts available for children, seniors and active military) is the Hoover Dam Power Plant Tour, which is broken up into several components at numerous locations, allowing guests to pick and choose which locations they want to see. The Hoover Dam Power Plant Tour begins with a brief video show depicting the history of Hoover Dam and how it came to be. Afterwards, a guide will escort you to an elevator for a 500-foot descent to get an up-close look at the power plant generators housed at the base of the dam. Guests will also see the original diversion tunnels and stand atop a giant, 30-foot pipe where they can feel the rumble of Colorado River water racing through it. THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

You truly believe that life is a gift, and you spend a good amount of time figuratively writing thank-you cards this year. This sort of ritual can feel like a chore, but one that’s execution invigorates your life in unexpected ways. Here comes the joy. Your stable of friends will widen to unlikely characters and people so different from you that it may at times feel you have little in common. Good. It’s what makes your team strong and what kicks off important and memorable adventures.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). While attempting to learn a thing, you may feel it’s getting the better of you. This is largely due to impatience, lack of faith, short-sightedness and the like, which will fall away when you push the pause button and catch your breath. Then, resolve yourself to the long view. This is a marathon, not a sprint. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You’re a master alchemist this week, transforming through a seemingly magical process, the main focus of your skill being moods, tones and the general feeling of rooms. How do you do it? Even you may not be completely sure, but your strong intention to improve things wherever you go is definitely a key part. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’re not greedy; you genuinely love to give! But it becomes strikingly apparent this week that you need more from a situation than you’re getting. Commence pondering. Should you give more to get more? Or is there something inherently wrong that makes achieving balance impossible in this scenario? CANCER (June 22-July 22). You’ve been protected from some of life’s darker aspects, but you’ve seen enough to know the range. This is what drives your instinct to protect someone else, an effort you won’t regret and, in fact, will someday be quite proud of. The end of the week features spontaneity that comes from the heart. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The limelight (or calcium light) that used to illuminate stages has long been replaced by electric light, yet the description remains part of our language of fame. Similarly, something you used to get a lot of attention for is no longer in your repertoire, but you’re still known for it. And you’ll enjoy the glow of that this week. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). What does it mean when you make a long to-do list and then realize you don’t feel like doing any of it? It’s not laziness. Your enormous sense of responsibility has edged out your individual joy and well-being. Be a kinder boss to yourself. Reduce the load. Make room for what your heart needs. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The body and mind don’t always get along with one another. It’s as though there’s a war for power and each thinks its own domain should be the ruling faction. Making them work together is tricky this week, but not impossible. Each needs to listen, respect and accept the powers of the other. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). When situations go well this week it will be because you were either prepared, experienced or both. Background knowledge on a subject will give you an edge. It will make you confident and comfortable because you have plenty of context to draw from. Set yourself up for success by learning all you can beforehand. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ll be feeling uncharacteristically introverted for part of the week, but giving into the urge to isolate may stunt your growth. Pump yourself up and get out there. Because every social interaction will teach you a little more about who you are, who you’ve been and who you want to be. You’re growing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). When you love someone who loves you back, you can’t help but feel like that person is, in a way, yours. Indeed, the lines of identity seem to overlap and blur. And yet it’s so important to recognize, adore and support the individual, independent spirit. The essence of love isn’t ownership. It’s appreciation. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The natural human instinct many will follow is to surround themselves with only people and information they agree with. While that may be the most comfortable scenario, and it serves the ego just fine, it’s a recipe for shallow living. You’ll do the opposite and seek diverse influences to strengthen your game. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). There is no logical argument that will be effective against illogical biases and opinions. Realizing that such a battle would be futile, you’ll sit back and observe the other side with great curiosity. This is the winning move. Gather information. Seek understanding. When it’s time to advance your interests, you’ll know it.

County Launches Partnership Program BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF editorial@antonmediagroup.com

assau County District Attorney Madeline Singas recently announced the grand opening of the Community Partnership Program in Hempstead. The Community Partnership Program (CPP) is a community-based resource and referral office that provides social services in English and Spanish to the general community with a focus on the re-entry population and other justice-involved individuals. CPP’s goal is to provide community support to reduce recidivism and build a safer community. “We know that when we address the issues that bring

people into the criminal justice system—whether it is addiction, poverty, mental health or other challenges— and provide people with the assistance they need, they are less likely to re-offend,” said Singas. “We have assembled a talented staff with credentials in healthcare, social services, education and leadership to help justice-involved individuals out of the system and into successful lives.” The program, located at 9 Centre St. in Hempstead, links community members to necessary resources, including medical insurance and health care; mental health and substance treatment; home healthcare

coordination, if eligible; job readiness programs; educational and vocational training; social service benefits, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; clothing closet; and food pantry. CPP staff also facilitates a group called Response Restructuring, a 15-week gang intervention and prevention meeting for parolees and probationers; and weekly meetings at Hempstead Middle and High Schools focusing on gang prevention and consequential thinking. The program, funded in part through asset forfeiture money provided by the NCDA, offers support meetings that are open to community members

The NFL’s Best Super Bowl Pairings

BY CHRISTOPHER BIRSNER Cbirsner@antonmediagroup.com

After 17 weeks of football, 12 of the best teams in the league will battle over the next three weeks to see which two squads will end their season in Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII. There are many great teams that could make the big game exciting, but what pairings would make even the casual fan heavily invested in the game? Chicago Bears vs. Kansas City Chiefs A battle between the league’s top offense and its stingiest defense is the classic championship battle NFL fans love seeing. Patrick Mahomes would get to show what he can do against a Bears team that has been one of the toughest defensive units to play against, with Khalil Mack leading the way. History is on the side of Chicago as historically great defenses tend to hoist the Lombardi Trophy (see the 1985 Bears), but Andy Reid’s Chiefs team has been one of the best the legendary coach has ever yielded. Los Angeles Chargers vs. New Orleans Saints This has more to do with the storylines than the game itself. Future

GRIDIRON CHAOS Christopher Birsner Hall of Famer Philip Rivers would be appearing in the first Super Bowl of his career after years of playing for teams that couldn’t get over the hump. Prior to him taking over the starting job for the Chargers in 2006, he sat behind another quarterback that will one day be enshrined in Canton: Drew Brees. The former Chargers starter, who got his first Super Bowl ring in 2009 with New Orleans, taking on his heir would be a battle for legacy while showcasing some of the best young stars in the league, such as Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, Keenan Allen and Joey Bosa. Dallas Cowboys vs. New England Patriots I know those of us in the New York area that align with the local teams would rather tear our eyes out than see these two teams play for yet another

championship, but hear me out. These two teams are the two most beloved and most hated franchises in sports and it would be fun to see them duke it out in a battle between the old guard (Tom Brady and Bill Belichick) and the rising stars (Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper). Another match up to watch is how New England is choosing the running game as the center of their offense, and they’ll have a tough test against two of the best line-backing duos in the league in Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch. The biggest winner of them all? The NFL, who would have record-breaking ratings for the game of their most popular teams. Kansas City Chiefs vs. Los Angeles Rams In Week 11, the former Missouri rivalry met for the first time since the Rams ditched St. Louis for the City of Angels. The game had a lot of hype going into it and somehow still blew those expectations out of the water. In a record-shattering 54-51 win for the Rams, many people began questioning if the league was going to move in the direction of higher scoring and less defense. In the month since, however, the Chiefs and Rams have struggled against good defenses. Still, if these

teams were to meet in February, it would mean Sean McVay and his Rams team has gotten Todd Gurley back to turn on their juggernaut status. The Chiefs would overcome history and win some playoff games at home. And the two could meet in February in yet another shootout. Houston Texans vs. Seattle Seahawks Deshaun Watson would be a Houston hero if he was able to lead this team to their first ever Super Bowl appearance, and he has the team around him to do it. DeAndre Hopkins is one of the league’s best receivers. Linebackers J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney make it difficult to move the ball up front. Tyrann Mathieu is back to his play level he had with the Arizoan Cardinals. But Watson’s ability to escape the pocket has been his story all year. So who would be a perfect opponent for them? Russell Wilson has his best offensive line in years with an established running game that has killed some tough opponents this season. They have even channeled the days of the Legion of Boom with a great defense, with veteran Bobby Wagner leading the way as one of the best players in the league.

Lip Smacking Foodie Tours is the ultimate dining experience BY JENNIFER FAUCI jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

B

runch has become a weekend ritual across America to the point where people proudly wear “Brunch So Hard” shirts with a mimosa in hand as they prepare for a late morning meal on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s just like that in Las Vegas. Times 10. Lip Smacking Foodie Tours offers the wildly popular Lip Smacking Boozy Brunch (Saturday and Sunday) at the ARIA Hotel & Casino. The rest of the week includes a variety of lunch and dinner tours on the strip as well as a localized food tour in the downtown area called Fremont East. The area, which has been focusing on the revitalization of the historic downtown is credited to Tony Hsieh, CEO of the online shoe and clothing company Zappos, who moved the company out to Vegas. On the Fremont East tour, guests will learn about unique eateries, speakeasies and members-only bars. Donald Contursi is the brainchild behind the fantastic foodie concept, which he started about three and a half years ago. “I worked in restaurants and found myself wanting to see and experience the different restaurants and what they’re famous for,” he said, noting that visitors who are here for a couple of days, don’t get a wide selection of dishes to choose from. “We highlight what is the favorite for VIPs, with no waiting and the food comes right out. It’s three to four signature dishes, a tasting menu of sorts (you get a cocktail or mocktail with the Boozy Brunch) of whatever that restaurant is famous for.” Popular among corporate groups or for those looking for something different, Contursi recommends taking the tour at the beginning of your trip in case you want to revisit any of the restaurants. During my stay, I enjoyed the Lip Smacking Boozy Brunch tour, which begins at 10:30 a.m. and runs for 2.5 hours at three restaurants within the ARIA Resort and Casino: Herringbone,

Clockwise from left: Bardot’s brioche french toast with vanilla mascarpone, almond brittle and orgeat syrup; eggs Florentine at Herringbone is one of the many dishes to choose from at the brunch buffet; Lemongrass’ always-popular dessert duo of warm, sweet, coconut sticky rice and a shaved ice dish with a variety of toppings; the star of the show is the dim sum, picture here in a trio of shrimp and pork.

Bardot Brasserie and Lemongrass. On this tour, you’ll indulge in three premiere brunches complete with a cocktail or mocktail of your choosing. Your tour guide will also point out various works of art that adorn the lobby of the ARIA on this walking tour. And you’ll be glad to walk off all those delicious calories. Named “Best Brunch’’ by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, start your morning brunch marathon with a visit to Herringbone, opened by Top Chef’s Brian Malarkey. Stations include

“Carved & Scrambled,’’ “Farm Fresh,’’ “Kid-In-You” and more. Enjoy your spoils al fresco and while you may want to eat everything in sight (the selection of fresh salads and pastries were my favorite), you are only allowed one plate and one turn at the buffet so as not to fill up in one place. At Bardot Brasserie, rev up your sweet tooth with caramelized, custardy canelés, as well as golden brioche French toast gilded with vanilla mascarpone and almond brittle. Sip a chic French 75 (French gin, fresh

lemon juice, Champagne) or an elegant non-alcoholic French Mule (velvet falernum, ginger beer, yuzu) at this glamorous French café founded by acclaimed Chef Michael Mina that was a James Beard semi-finalist for Best New Restaurant. The stunning bar is the highlight here as well as the chartreuse and cognac program, with a spirit that dates back as far as 1811. You can sample some for $1,200 per ounce. Next, revel in brunch Asian-style, with dim sum at Lemongrass. Known for its dim sum buffets (the

Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas

Luckily for everyone, 1995 also saw the release of Leaving Las Vegas, a film so soaked in Nicolas Cage’s drunken method acting that one can’t help but taste the whiskey and depravity through the screen. It is a raw and unflinching look at addiction—so true to its dark subject matter that it earned Cage an

Academy Award. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas first appeared as a two-part series in Rolling Stone in 1971 and was published as a book the following year. The story follows true (as far as the author can tell) exploits of counter-culture gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson as he attempts to cover a desert race near Las Vegas for a national magazine. That book, rich with color, insanity and psychedelic sensibilities was adapted to the big screen in 1998, starring Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke (Hunter S. Thompson) and Benicio Del Toro as Duke’s lawyer Dr. Gonzo (Oscar Zeta Acosta). When the film was released, it was largely mis-marketed as a screwball comedy, when it actuality it is the documentation of two men’s descent into drug-fueled madness as the 1960s

decayed into the 1970s. All the while, the grandeur of Las Vegas is fully on display, including an absolutely insane walk-through of the Circus Circus hotel. Quickly rolling through other Vegas movies including Vegas Vacation (1997), Very Bad Things (1998), 3000 Miles To Graceland (2001) and The Cooler (2003), lands us squarely on The Hangover (2009). In what has became the quintessential movie about the all-out debauchery associated with a night out in Vegas, The Hangover is about a group of guys who lose their groom friend during a bachelor party and must piece together their foggy recollections of the night before in order to find him. The movie was a smash hit, spawning two sequels and an entire genre of bromance films. Thanks, Vegas.
