Paul Scheer’s Black Monday role in parodying Wall Street’s worst day By Dave Gil de Rubio dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com

O

ct. 19, 1987, was a dark economic date. It was when the worst stock market crash in Wall Street history took place. Three-plus decades later, this financial tragedy is serving as satirical fodder for Black Monday, a new Showtime series that shares the same nickname as that ill-fated day. Created by David Caspe and Jordan Cahan, it stars fellow executive producer Don Cheadle, who plays Maurice “Mo” Monroe, the head of the Jammer Group. This renegade Wall Street investment firm is rounded out by a misfit crew driven by Dawn Darcy (Regina Hall) and Keith Shankar (Paul Scheer) who cross paths with Blair Pfaff (Andrew Rannells), a wide-eyed trader ripe for manipulation. With the comedic team of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg serving as executive producers and writers, it’s the kind of comedic project Scheer was eager to jump onto after being an integral part of the FX series The League for seven seasons. “I’m friends with David and Jordan, who created Black Monday. Years ago, they said they had this idea about Wall Street and they had this part they thought I’d be really good for. I said I’d love to do it, but I couldn’t do anything because of The League and David was doing Happy Endings at the time, so it just faded away,” Scheer said. “About last year this time, I got a call from them again and asked if I remember that show they initially proposed. I said yes and they said they wanted me to meet Don [Cheadle] for the part. It was originally written for a guy in his late 60s and they wanted to see my take on it. So I came in and read with Don and that’s how the part came together.” With the show being set in the mid to late 1980s, there are plenty of cultural references thrown in, whether it’s the video game Duck Hunt, the then-recent World Series champion New York Mets or nods to workplace films Wall Street and Working Girl. And while Scheer was only 11 when everything hit the financial fan on that long-ago date and was more caught up with begging his parents to let him stay up late watching television and taking him to see Planes, Trains & Automobiles, he dove into his Wall

Street research with great relish. “I was finding a lot of great BBC documentaries about people that trade on the floor and the culture there,” he said. “There’s something interesting about traders. These

people are essentially living the life of a rock star, without any of the fame or success. It’s just the wealth part. So they are acting insane during their days and making all these cutthroat decisions and a lot of them have to

come home to a family. Part of the fun of these documentaries was that you’d see these people on the floor who were just these animals and then go home and play with their kids. But you’re basically putting more stress on your throat and heart from eight until noon and you have the rest of the day off.” With Cheadle setting the tone for the series, the narrative takes twists and turns that perfectly capture that era’s financial excesses, be it the main character’s use of a stretch Lamborghini, high-stakes wagering on mundanities and the rampant use of cocaine, all fueled by alpha male-driven braggadocio. And while it’s framed with humor, there are a surprising amount of dark and dramatic turns that pop up, particularly when it comes to Scheer’s character. “When I first heard about the show, it was about seeing a character that was much more complex than what I had seen in a comedy, and that was exciting. I love what these guys have been really able to do. While this is a hard comedy, they are adding some of these beats that I love from dramatic

TRADING from page 3A shows like Better Call Saul that has a serialization to it,” Scheer explained. “I think a lot of the times when you hear the word dramedy, it’s a lot more drama and a lot less comedy. And I think what they’re trying to do here is balance it. My character is clearly putting on this very aggressive persona to mask what he’s dealing with in his personal life that, at the time, was not accepted. We are a firm of underdogs, but it’s a little bit deeper than just being The Bad News Bears and I really like that. It’s one of those shows that, as we shot it, I had an idea of what was going to be happening over the course of the season. But when we shot our last day, I literally had no idea where this goes in season two, because everything matters.” With a number of projects in the docket—a couple of podcasts, writing a comic book series, and myriad television guest appearances, the veteran sketch comedian’s television face time is even more ubiquitous. But given the level of talent his three main castmates bring to the set on a day-in and dayout basis and the quality of writing he’s working with on Black Monday, Scheer realizes the unique opportunity he’s been given to be a part of this.

“I love what Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg do. I know it’s a little bit insiderish because we’re talking about Black Monday, which they created. But I believe they are doing the best work in comedy. I would say that if I was not involved in Black Monday. If you look at the movies and TV shows they’re directing and writing, I am so impressed with them. Whenever I look at a career, I am completely blown away by them.”

Eric Anderson plays fairy godfather in Pretty Woman on Broadway

retty Woman, the classic Garry Marshall film that cemented Julia Roberts as the queen of romantic comedies in the ’90s, has made its way to the Broadway stage, with the added bonus of music by hit-maker Bryan Adams and songwriting partner Jim Vallance. The new musical stars Andy Karl, of Rocky and Groundhog Day, and Samantha Barks in her Broadway debut. In the story that can be described as a mash-up between Pygmalion, Cinderella and Wall Street, wealthy

businessman Edward hires Hollywood Boulevard prostitute Vivian for a full week. The transaction develops into something more, with some coaxing by hotel owner Mr. Thompson, played by Eric Anderson, who describes the character as a sort of magical fairy godfather. Héctor Elizondo famously played Mr. Thompson in the film. “His portrayal was the blueprint and I added my own flesh to it,” Anderson said. Anderson also pops up as several other characters throughout the show, including a homeless man on the Boulevard who spreads hopes and dreams to the downtrodden, and he

loves having the opportunity to show off what he can do as a character actor. A mid-act two number with powerhouse Orfeh resounds as one of the catchiest tunes from the show. “It’s a happy number and fun to look at the audience and see them bopping along with us,” he said. “It’s like a

three-minute party.” Anderson, who previously played Cal in Waitress and Mr. O’Malley in The Greatest Showman, knew Garry Marshall well while he was coming up as an actor in California and part of the Troubador Theatre Company. Marshall had wanted to bring Pretty Woman to

Broadway for years and wrote the book with J.F. Lawton before he passed away in 2016. “It’s kind of serendipitous that I became involved with the show after his passing,” Anderson said. “Knowing Garry, he’d be so proud of it and thrilled with how it has blossomed into what it

is. It’s bittersweet, but we pay him good homage.” In addition to Marshall’s family, Julia Roberts attended a special tribute performance and gave her blessing, which Anderson calls “the greatest compliment that we could get, not having Garry with us.” Anderson has been with the show for most of its journey to Broadway and had a blast collaborating with the creative team and molding his character to his strengths. “A lot of the choreography that I do was created by myself and [director and choreographer] Jerry Mitchell,” he said. “Then we were able to interact with Lawton, our writer, and Bryan [Adams] and Jim [Vallance] in helping to shape the songs and dialogue to our strengths as well.” Adams rose to fame in the ’80s with hit singles “Run to You,” “Heaven” and “Summer of ’69.” His style of music with longtime cowriter Vallance is the perfect fit for a musical set in 1990. Andy Karl, who earned a Tony nomination and Laurence Olivier award, taps into the sound of the Canadian pop-rock icon during his numbers, and also channels Richard Gere in his performance. Pretty Woman: The Musical elevates the ‘hooker with a heart of gold’ trope into a message of empowerment, never

clearer than during Samantha Barks’ fierce rock anthem “I Can’t Go Back.” Barks is known for playing Éponine in the film adaptation of Les Misérables and handles the part of Vivian with charisma and an effervescence required for the role. The ensemble cast includes Tommy Bracco as Giulio, the scene-stealing bellhop who gets to show off a few of his Newsies moves, and Allison Blackwell, who shakes the building with her passionate rendition of a La traviata solo. And it can’t be overstated how welcome Orfeh is every time she graces the stage as Vivian’s wisecracking roommate Kit and effortlessly dominates the room with her uniquely powerful voice. The Tony-nominated actress, who happens to be married to Andy Karl, needs to headline her own show, stat. Though sanitized to satisfy a PG-13 crowd, the essence of the iconic love fable remains. “It lifts people up and makes them forget about their cares for a couple of hours,” Anderson said. “That’s what we need more than anything right now— some positive escapism.” See Pretty Woman: The Musical at The Nederlander Theatre, 208 West 41st St., NYC. BUSINESS NEWS

Retail Giant Rebounds

Esther Fortunoff discusses her family’s business from the past to the present BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

I

n 1922, Max and Clara Fortunoff founded a store that would become synonymous with housing everything under one roof: gourmet appliances, housewares, indoor and outdoor furniture and more. What started as a general store pushcart in Brooklyn quickly began to grow into brick and mortar shops. And according to Max and Clara’s granddaughter Esther Fortunoff, as the family expanded, so did the business. “Each of my grandparents’ three children came into the business and when they married, so did their spouses. They all pursued a different product line and type of product offering,” said Fortunoff of her family’s business, which at one point comprised 11 stores in a three-block radius in the Brooklyn borough. “It was an unusual mix of things with products sourced all over the world, but at great prices.” As Brooklyn changed over time, the Fortunoffs made the decision to put everything under one roof, settling in Westbury in 1964. It was a very successful move that happened very quickly, becoming popular with suburban families on Long Island and in Queens. “Once the move happened, the store was extremely busy so my family quickly opened just a jewelry, silver and watch store in Manhattan and another one of the same in Paramus Park, NJ. Both of those went so well that they decided to open a flagship store in 1979 on Fifth Avenue,” said Fortunoff of the store that was housed in an historic building also from 1922 from the firm of McKim, Mead & White. “In 1979, I came into the business. All of us third generation kids had been working in the business in some capacity—I was back from college after a stint as an archaeologist in the Sinai desert—and came back to help train the staff for the Fifth Avenue location.” At the time, Fortunoff was tasked with spending time with actress Lauren Bacall, who was the company’s spokesperson. In the 1980s, more department stores opened in New Jersey until 1990, when Fortunoff joined forces with Simon Malls, becoming the Source Mall

in Westbury. “My family made the decision to sell the business in 2005, but the new owners didn’t get the DNA of what Fortunoff really was. And the growth of the Internet and online shopping gave people a different way to shop,” said Fortunoff, noting that www.fortunoffjewelry.com was launched in 2010 and was met with success. “We had a lot of customers and sales, but we found that people wanted a store again so I made the decision to open a brick and mortar boutique-sized store in 2014 back at the Source Mall.” Fortunoff has been operating that store ever since. While she still prefers print media and advertising in magazines and newspapers, she also understands the power of social media and has utilized Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest as well as face-to-face marketing at events. In terms of the store’s inventory, Fortunoff says it’s a combination of old and new styles. “I’m seeing a return to color with more gemstone jewelry, which I love. It’s interesting to learn about the different countries that they come from and there are different combinations of stones as well,” she said. “There is also a return to yellow gold as opposed to white. In jewelry, trends change more slowly than in clothing. People still like stacking rings, others are into unisex jewelry that is more plain and we also have estate jewelry.” Fortunoff makes an effort to carry jewelry from women designers whenever she can and notes that the company does a lot of custom designing for people as well. She also invests her time working with several nonprofit charities and organizations on Long Island and has created special pieces of jewelry for those groups to retail and raise money from. So what’s next? “I’m currently exploring a pop-up type situation in the city and am in the process of changing my website to a new platform with enhanced photography, making it easier to navigate and see our collections as things evolve,” said Fortunoff. “People are downsizing and looking to sell their jewelry. I’m an expert at that.” For more on Fortunoff, visit www. fortunoffjewelry.com.

ofstra University and the Gold Coast International Film Festival are proud to announce the second annual Youth Film Day, a day of hands-on filmmaking workshops for teens, which will take place on Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication in Hempstead. Hofstra is the official university partner of the Gold Coast International Film Festival and the Gold Coast Arts Center’s yearround film programs. This free event is designed for students in grades seven through 12 who have an interest in directing, producing, editing, writing, or acting, and wish to explore careers in film and television. Attendees will participate in hands-on filmmaking workshops on visual effects (CGI), cinematography; using drones; editing; sound design; stunts and fight choreography; and more, led by industry professionals including Hofstra faculty and Gold Coast International Film Festival staff and board members. New this year are workshops in Special

FX Makeup where students will learn how to create realistic special effects using stage makeup, and Employment Opportunities in the film and television industries. “There has never been a more exciting and innovative time in film and television arts,” said Mark Lukasiewicz, dean of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra. “Young people are creating media at ever-younger ages, and exposing them to professional-level skills and techniques is a great experience for students and faculty alike.” Other activities include screenings, panels, and tours of the Herbert School’s fully HD-equipped learning

environment, which includes production studios with 4K/Ultra HD cameras; an audio production, sound mixing, and color correction suite for TV and film; editing and screening suites; a converged digital newsroom; and a new multimedia studio and control room for music, audio, and radio production. Participants will also have an opportunity, though not required, to submit a short film to be screened for awards consideration. Last year’s inaugural Youth Film Day was a great success and included an awards ceremony with Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “The program is an extension of the Gold Coast International Film Festival’s

The event is presented by Hofstra University and the Gold Coast International Film Festival

highly successful Young Filmmakers Program, which takes place every year during the annual film festival,” said Caroline Sorokoff, festival director. “Our goals are to give students a clearer picture of the industry and, for those who decide to pursue careers in film or television, some practical skills and experience.” Youth Film Day is part of Hofstra’s Regional Scholars program, which offers talented middle school and high school students the opportunity to explore new academic interests with scholars and college students as mentors, to spend a day or two on a college campus, and to gain an understanding of what collegiate-level work entails. Although the event is free, participants must register in advance at www.goldcoastfilmfestival.org/ youthfilmday. Lunch is provided at no cost, along with some fun giveaways. The program is open to students from throughout the tri-state area and beyond. —Anton Media Group

These traits are particular to each individual, and parents of multiple children say that no two children have the same temperament. THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

Do not fear your own success. However mighty and skyward bound you are, you also have roots, which will extend deeper in equal measure to balance out the new developments of the year. Also note that the dormant times when things slow down and output becomes minimal (like early May, late July and November) are absolutely necessary in this pattern of self-actualization and growth. Invest in yourself this month. March brings the end of a trial and an improved structure to daily routines. COPYRIGHT 2019 CREATORS.COM

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Time and distance are supposed to make things farther away, and yet you somehow defy the natural laws, take improbable mental leaps and close the gaps. In your mind, 10 years ago is as close to you as yesterday, and your feelings are just as intense. Use your time-traveling power for healing this week. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). There is a difference between being accepting of the moment and being resigned to your fate. As you walk that line, have the courage to be active in the choice. You have more influence than you think. You might be surprised how little it takes to tip things in your favor -- a breath, a smile, a blink. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). What’s amazing won’t be easy and what’s easy won’t be amazing. Is it unfortunate that you have to work for the pleasurable experience? Not at all. In fact, the work is what makes the experience pleasurable. The work trains your mind, primes your being and gives you the proper focus to fully appreciate the reward. CANCER (June 22-July 22). They say, “Don’t do the same thing and expect a different result.” The only problem is that sometimes it actually works. Sometimes what’s needed is repetition, or a bigger push, a more forceful shove. So one answer doesn’t work for everyone. Be willing to try crude, blunt methods. Not every solution is clever. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). When it comes to choosing what’s best for you, you must hold yourself to a vigilant standard. It’s often not obvious. It’s often not desirable. The tendency is to claim what is preferred because it’s easier than challenging oneself -- doing the spiritual equivalent of choosing cupcakes instead of vegetables. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You can admire another person’s intelligence (or beauty or success, etc.) without questioning your own. But if you find yourself comparing yourself to others a little too often or too closely, consider that you could be setting yourself up for an unhealthy and unnecessarily competitive dynamic. Eyes on your own page. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’ll have the courage to ask for a little more from people this week. It’s easier when you’re asking strangers. With no prior relationship, you have nothing to lose. In the case of your friends and loved ones, familiarity makes the approach easier but the stakes much higher. Go thoughtfully and all works well. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Before you give yourself over to a process, you’ll want to see how it worked for others -- read the reviews, revel in the testimonials, let yourself get intrigued and excited about your prospects. Actually, when you really think about it, this is half the fun (if not all of it). So draw it out and put off your final decision until later. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Your mistakes have been so valuable to you that you may wonder why you ever tried to avoid making them. Of course, you’d rather get the reward than the lesson, but the fact that you’re willing to risk and then accept what comes puts you in a terrific position this week. You truly can’t lose. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You trust life’s process, you trust your support system, and you trust that no matter what happens, you’ll figure out a way through it. With these three tenants in place, you’ll be able to find remarkable balance and stability even in precarious places. In a sense, this opens the world to you. Go with confidence. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). It’s like that point in a police drama when the chief tells the hot-headed officer who’s acting out to “take some time off, and clear your head...” and then the officer only goes further into the case, this time without the rules. You’re both characters in the scenario, trying to control yourself and trying to still get the job done. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). What others around you are doing will be something to note, but you shouldn’t let it influence you too strongly, as you’ll probably be surrounded by so much appropriateness that, were you to distill it and encase it in a gel cap, you could use it to tranquilize a large zoo animal. Do you. The world needs it.

Curran: Grievance Deadline Extended

assau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced that the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) will extend the property assessment grievance deadline until Monday, April 30, by providing an additional 60-day grace period. “To continue our efforts to provide property owners with the time and resources they need to fully understand the reassessment process and its results, I have asked the Assessment Review Commission to extend the grievance deadline to April 30,” said Curran. The grace period provided last year by ARC, enjoyed bipartisan support from the county executive and County Legislature. Homeowners who believe that their assessed value for the

2020-21 tax year is inaccurate can file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” with ARC before the

close of the grievance filing period which is extended from March 1 to April 30.

–ARC Chairwoman Robin Laveman Tentative assessed values for the 2020-21 tax year for every Nassau County property have been finalized and posted online at www.mynassauproperty.com. In addition to being posted online, Nassau County property owners will receive in the mail by Jan. 31, a Notice of Tentative Assessed Value. “Challenging your assessment is a simple process that can be done directly by the property owner in just a few minutes. There are many resources including a five-minute

instructional video, ‘How to Appeal Your Assessment,’ to walk filers through the process,” said ARC Chairwoman Robin Laveman. “We will also be holding joint community meetings with the County Legislators and the Department of Assessment to address residents’ concerns and answer questions.” ARC applications can be obtained online at www.nassaucountyny. gov/arc. There is no fee to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” with Nassau County. For individuals who do not have Internet access, the application can be obtained in person at ARC located at 240 Old Country Rd., in Mineola, or by contacting ARC at 516-571-3214. The extension of the grievance period will be highlighted on ARC’s website. Property owners are encouraged to check ARC’s website for up to date information. Curran encourages residents with additional questions or in need of further clarification on the reassessment process and their property’s tentative value to make an appointment at one of the Department of Assessment’s satellite offices which will remain open until Jan. 31. Residents can make their appointments at www.askthecountyassessor.com. Approximately 1,160 property owners have appointments scheduled for January and more than 7,000 appointment slots are still available. —Nassau County

espite what the NFL or the television networks would have you believe, not everyone is a football fan. Sure, there are those that dutifully paint their faces and head out shirtless to the stadium nearly every Sunday, while others simple gather with their crew to grunt as one at the local bar or in front of a big-screen TV from the comfort and warmth of their own home. This article is not for those people. No, this article is for the casual fan who only watches football during their weekly laundry-folding marathon or when they are a guest

This article is for those who, yes, will watch the Super Bowl, but not because they care one way or the other if Tom Brady wins another title or if the Rams cover the spread (whatever that means). This is for those whose Super Bowl interests hinge on the other kind of spread—the food spread. For years, wings have been the go-to fare for Super Sunday and for good reason. Coated in sensually spicy buffalo sauce or sticky sweet barbecue sauce, wings are the perfect big-game food because you can eat at least 20 before you start to feel ill. Wings are wonderful, but wings have been done. Instead, this article is dedicated to the mighty sandwich and the best spots on Long

From roast beef sandwiches to chicken cutlet melts, subs are king on game day.

Island to load up on love between slices of bread—meats, cheeses and everything else bookended by bread that is simultaneously crusty and pillowy soft. Baseball might be the National Pastime, but football is America’s Game. And in America we cram whatever we damn-well please onto a loaf of bread and unhinge our jaw for a hulking bite. The sandwich hits hunger hard, proudly served from the home field of the ubiquitous Long Island deli. Syosset’s Village Heros, 80 W. Jericho Tpke., serves up pure touchdowns with absolutely gigantic hero sandwiches that come in two sizes, large and small. The large is two meals in one, while the small remains stocky and powerful. There are many favorites on the menu like the Wild Willy and the Italian Stallion Bomber, but ask for the special Donnie Brasco with fried chicken cutlets, American cheese, crisp bacon, sautéed onions and Russian dressing on a garlic hero. Sometimes on the specials board, sometimes not—but ask for it either way and the team at Village Heros will gladly build one just for you. Breaking tackles over to Plainview, Fireside Caterers has been a staple in the community for a number of years at 513 Old Country

Rd. Regulars to the sandwich haven are well versed in the menu’s classic sandwiches like the Captain Hook, The Islander and Mussolini’s Revenge—but hot hero fans need to bite down on the G-Man, with roast beef and melted mozzarella on a garlic hero. The pungent garlic bread makes all the difference here, with a taste—and aroma—you and your Super Bowl friends will remember well after the game clock ticks zero. In Garden City South, Adelphi Deli, 351 Nassau Blvd., has a long list of sandwiches like the Crackerjack, the People’s Chicken and the Cattleman, but its best sandwich might be its simplest— The Snack, with chicken cutlet, melted mozzarella and brown gravy. The richness of the gravy soaks into the length of the hero bread, making a moist sandwich from end-to-end, while the chicken cutlet remains crisp and the mozzarella holds the entire sandwich together. Farther west, Cherry Valley Deli, 168 Hempstead Tpke., stays open 24 hours in West Hempstead, and while the parking situation is anything but super, the sandwiches are like any high-powered office— unrelenting and devastating. The Last Call is the perfect nightcap with chicken cutlet, mushrooms,

mozzarella and gravy, while the Macho Man adds Swiss and fried onions to the team—but the Bomb Hero is perhaps the most powerful, with brown gravy covering grilled steak, bacon, cheddar and onion rings. The robust steak is the lumbering linebacker of the sandwich world, hitting hard and taking no prisoners. And finally, the South Shore’s local hero, the chicken Bindy, is presented in its most savory form at Green Deli, 1710 Rockaway Ave. in Lynbrook. Another 24-hour shop, Green’s Bindy is the classic

combination of chicken cutlet, bacon, mozzarella and Russian dressing. If it were a player on a team, it would for sure be the safety as the always a reliable defense against a hungry onslaught. So this Super Bowl Sunday, buy some office boxes and gawk at the ridiculous and alway disappointing commercials and even pay attention to the game if that’s your thing. But remember, the NFL’s championship game exists for one reason—to give you an excuse for over-eating indulgence on a random night in February.

The Other Side Of Super Bowl III By Dave Gil De RuBio

Super Bowl III champions the New York Jets

dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com

F

ifty years have passed since the New York Jets upset the Baltimore Colts in the third AFL-NFL Championship, which was dubbed Super Bowl III and the first to carry the Super Bowl designation. The final score was a modest 16-7, but the impact of that New York win was mammoth, between the instantaneous legitimacy it gave the upstart American Football League and planting the seed for the cash cow spectacle the Super Bowl has become for the National Football League. Most fans remember the promise of a guaranteed win Jets quarterback Joe Namath promised to the press leading up to the game. In Beyond Broadway Joe: The Super Bowl TEAM That Changed Football, author Bob Lederer took a unique

approach to telling this squad’s tale by painstakingly highlighting the story of every player and coach who had a part in bringing a championship back to New York. Within each chapter, Lederer provides the story of each person dating back to their roots, through their history with the Jets and what they did in Super Bowl III’s aftermath. He shares what Namath’s teammates thought about their quarterback’s guarantee, what the coaches discovered during the game that

enabled the Jets to frustrate and stifle the Colts during the game and how the end result of Super Bowl III may have saved the existence of several AFL teams from folding (including the then-Boston Patriots and Denver Broncos). Lederer also succeeds in highlighting the contributions of a number of less-heralded Jets, including linebacker Al Atkinson, left guard Bob Talamini and overachieving defensive end Gerry Philbin—among the many names from this team modern-day Jets fans should get to know.

Lederer’s greatest coup was getting access to Ewbank’s secret personnel evaluation system, which many of the coach’s players didn’t know existed. A wonderfully thorough and thrilling read, Lederer’s publishing debut is for Jets diehards, all stripes of football fan and anyone interested in learning about the many intangibles that go into creating a championship team. Clark Five. Only 18 when the band was started, Argent and Blunstone were joined by fellow St. Albans natives Hugh Grundy, future A&R exec Paul Atkinson and Paul Arnold, who was replaced by Chris White when the band went to record their first album. The combination of Blunstone’s airy vocal phrasing and Argent’s deftly-played organ runs gave the band’s material a sophisticated, chamber pop nuance that took them beyond the charts and earned them a number of latter-day famous fans including the late Tom Petty and Paul Weller. Despite the band breaking up, The Zombies wound up staying in touch. Argent and White went on to find success, while Blunstone reaped his own solo acclaim in the UK with a string of hits that never quite cracked the American market. Argent and White even produced Blunstone’s first two solo outings, and White wound up taking the production helm for Blunstone’s 1974 effort Journey The latter-day Zombies roster found Blunstone and Argent rounding out the lineup with guitarist Tom Toomey, the late Jim Rodford on bass

a new album with the latter sometime in 2019. It’s all a bit of a whirlwind that the slight vocalist is being sure to embrace at every turn. “So in the last few years, things have gone very well for The Zombies. We’re mature enough now to really appreciate it, because we know how tough this business is,” he said. “That’s why I think we’re very fortunate to enjoy this kind of adventure at this time in our lives. It doesn’t happen to many people that they get these kinds of opportunities at this time in their lives. Believe me, we’re really, really enjoying it and what we’re thinking about is what comes next.”

and Rodford’s son Steve on drums. Rodford, who was Argent’s first cousin, was previously the Kinks bassist from 1978 until 1996. He joined The Zombies in 2004 and played with them until his death on Jan. 20 of last year. A recent memorial service/musical peformance was held on the year-anniversary of his death in his hometown of St. Albans. Joining Argent and Blunstone were the surviving members of The Zombies Chris White and Hugh Grundy (Atkinson died in 2004) and opening the show was ARC, made up of Rodford’s granddaughters, Anya and Cara and his son Russ. It was a cherished moment for Blunstone. “I like to think that Jim was smiling down at us and enjoying the evening,” Blunstone said. “It was an emotional evening with tinges of sadness, but it turned out to be a wonderful evening as well with plenty of laughter.” Showing no signs of slowing down, Blunstone will be touring solo and with The Zombies with plans to record

reg Lake once said that making a comeback with dignity was one of the most difficult things to do. That said, the late Emerson, Lake & Palmer founding member must have missed out on what was going on with his fellow countrymen, The Zombies. That latter group broke up virtually penniless in 1967, only to see Odeyssey and Oracle, their 1968 sophomore bow, spawn the 1969 American Top 3 hit “Time of the Season.” By then the individual members had moved on to other projects. Fast forward to six dates in 1999. Founding members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent hit the road to perform as a duo, evolving into a full-blown Zombies reunion that’s carried on to the present day. It’s an astonishing turnabout for this beloved baroque pop act that not only wound up getting critical acclaim, but earning themselves a devoted cult following that translated into the group’s upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Currently touring with his solo band, the ever-modest Blunstone is humble about the response and affection his band has been receiving at this late date. “Isn’t [our upcoming induction] incredible? I’m really thrilled actually. Firstly, that loyal and tenacious fans voted more than 320,000 times for us in the fan vote. It’s just mind-boggling to me that you can get 320,000 The original votes. And secZombies lineup ondly, that the members of the Rock Hall should have voted to induct us because all musicians are looking for peer group acceptance,” he admitted. “It’s such a lift to get that kind of reaction from fellow professionals. It’s really beyond my wildest imagination that we should be honored in this way and I’m extremely grateful.” Also known for their other 1964 hits, “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No,” The Zombies arrived as part of the British Invasion alongside The Animals, Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, Hollies, Kinks and The Dave

ell, here we are again. The New England Patriots are back in the Super Bowl. For the third straight year, and the fourth time in five years, we’ll be talking about Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and their supporting cast for yet another February. The story lines around this team feel like they’ve been told before, leading some to wonder if paint drying would be more compelling to watch. However, this Patriots team is more intriguing than some in recent memories, considering many thought this team wouldn’t make it back. The Patriots started to season out in a 1-2 hole,

dropping back to back road games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions. Then, almost like clockwork, the Patriots rattled off six straight victories, including victories over the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers. Then came another bump in the road, getting blown out by the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. Couple that with a miracle loss in Miami and the Steelers finally exercising their demons to beat the Patriots, and New England seemed like it wasn’t even going to get a bye in the playoffs. But the identity of the team changed in the last few weeks of the year. There was more emphasis on the run game, with running backs Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead taking on a bulk of the carries. Michel, a first-round rookie drafted out of Georgia, has five rushing touchdowns and a little more than 250 rushing yards in two postseason games. Defensively, the combination of Trey Flowers and Kyle Van Noy have tortured quarterbacks up front after the team finished the regular season with the second fewest sacks in the league. It has led to four straight victories since their loss in Pittsburgh and a berth to the franchise’s eleventh Super Bowl. Standing in their way to a sixth title is the youthful Los Angeles Rams and their innovative head coach Sean McVay. Since arriving in southern California in 2017, 33-year old McVay turned a newly-relocated Rams team from a 31-48-1 dumpster fire the previous five seasons to a 24-8 juggernaut that has been the factory of offensive greatness in the NFL for the last two seasons. With big trades and key free agent acquisitions in the offseason, the Rams are destined to lift the trophy. The team started the season with the best record in the NFL, sitting at 8-0 including massive wins over the Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks. However, when December arrived, the team started to face some issues. After their best game on Monday Night Football in Week 11, the Rams offensive juggernaut began to collapse with the absence of wideout Cooper Kupp. Quarterback Jared Goff started having a drop off in play and star running back Todd Gurley also began dealing with injury. The team ended up losing backto-back games to the Bears and Philadelphia Eagles and were close to losing a grip on the second seed. Luckily for them, they held on. Aaron Donald, the likely defensive player of the year, has been a main factor in shutting down opposing offenses. Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters, both trade acquisition, were crucial in stopping wide receivers down the stretch. Late season acquisition C.J. Anderson ran in Gurley’s place and barreled the team into the divisional round of the playoffs. Once there, Goff steadily improved with the

Yes, many people believe their last win was tainted due to a pass interference that should’ve been called, but saying the Rams don’t deserve to be here is disrespectful to the foundation McVay and general manager Les Snead built over the last few seasons. When the Super Bowl is played on Sunday, the Patriots will be looking to put pressure on Goff through their newly found pass rush. Patriots cornerback Stephon Gillmore, who had an all-pro season, will have to choose which of the many receivers the Rams have to shut down and hope the rest of the secondary follows. Tom Brady needs to get the ball out quicker than usual with Donald and Ndamukong Suh hunting him down. For the Rams, they need to get the running game going with Anderson and a hopefully healthy Gurley. The defense will have to shut down a lot of weapons, including running backs looking to catch passes from Brady. But at its core, this battle will be a coaching clinic of the legend in Belichick and the new kid in McVay. So will the foundation of the Patriots extend their dynasty to six titles or will the Rams reach their destiny to capture their second championship, and the first of potentially many in the McVay era? Kickoff can’t come soon enough. JOY DIDONATO Director of Circulation LINDA BACCOLI Director of Business Administration
