onfident, aggressive and loyal. Those are the words that best describe actress Lauren Ash’s hilarious character Dina Fox, the assistant manager of the Cloud 9 department store on NBC’s sitcom Superstore, which follows the lives and antics of a group of semi-dysfunctional employees who work at a fictional big-box store in St. Louis, MO. It was a long journey for Ash to get to where she is today, but ever since the Canadian-born actress saw a video camera at the age of 7, she realized that being in front of that camera was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. “I actually was a very shy child and
when I was 7, my grandparents had a wedding anniversary and someone rented a video camera,” explained Ash. “It was the first time I’ve ever seen a video camera or had any sort of concept of that and I just turned into another child apparently. There’s video footage of me doing impressions of Robin Leach of the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. I just loved it and loved being on camera.” As she grew older, Ash went to theater school, but dropped out after only four months and eventually signed up for improv classes at the Second City in Toronto—an improv and sketch comedy theatre bar. “Within a year of taking classes at The Second City I got hired at a touring company, which I did for many years, and then I performed
at the Mainstage there [in Toronto] and then I performed at The Second City Mainstage in Chicago as well,” said Ash. “Then I just transitioned into doing film and TV full-time. I did that in Toronto for a while and then I came to LA. It’s been a very long journey, but a good one.” After doing a couple of television shows such as Super Fun Night on ABC and Another Period on Comedy Central, Ash started looking for another full-time gig when she came upon the Superstore script during pilot season. “I couldn’t believe it when I read Dina because she was literally a character that I had developed when I was at The Second City in Toronto and I played on stage all the time,” said Ash. “So the characters were so similar I
was like ‘Oh my god. This is my role. Nobody else can play this because I know her. I’ve played her for years.’” After going through four different auditions, Ash finally locked in the role of Dina. “Here’s the thing, I’m not really cocky,” said Ash. “But, I just knew from the first time I read [the script] that I’m going to play that part and that it was going to run for many years, and I was right.” Superstore, which is currently in its fourth season, sees Dina in a precarious situation this time around when she agrees to become her boss’ surrogate. Her boss, Glenn Sturgis, is played by fellow Canadian actor and comedian Mark McKinney.

SUPERSTORE from page 3A “I obviously wasn’t really pregnant so there was the ever-growing baby bump,” laughed Ash. “It looks heavy, but it’s not. It’s actually very warm. It’s like wearing 80 scarves wrapped around your midsection. But a funny story about that is that I had a scene where I had to have an ultrasound done where they had to put a prosthetic belly on me and it looked really authentic, and so my mom, when I was a kid, scared me really bad and I’ve never gotten her back. So I got her back by sending her pictures and telling her that I’ve been hiding my pregnancy from her. So personally how was that storyline process for me as an actor? It was pretty awesome because I got to torment my mother, which was 20 years in the making.” So what’s next for Ash’s character for the remainder of the season? “There’s a lot more episodes left of the season,” said Ash. “Obviously, Dina’s given birth to Glenn’s baby. We’re going to see her interact with that baby and see what that’s like. Is she scared or is she not scared? There is a huge upcoming episode that I can only barely tease, but all I’m allowed to say is, is that the fans have been heard and we will finally get to see Dina’s

birds. That’s something that’s really exciting to come.” Even though the employees of Cloud 9 bicker back and forth, off-camera it’s nothing but love between the cast who often vacation together to places such as Las Vegas and Austin, TX. “We bonded really quickly right from the beginning,” said Ash. “At the

end of season one, we went to Vegas together, which was amazing. We went to a television festival in Austin, TX, and we decided to stay for a few extra days and hang out together. At the beginning when the show first started, I’d tell people ‘We really get along. We’re all friends.’ And everyone said, ‘Yeah, well wait ‘til season four.’ I can tell you that we’re in season four and we still all really get along. It’s a pretty amazing thing to get to go and hang out with your buddies every day and catch up and we manage to shoot a show in our spare time.” Filming a sitcom such as Superstore that involves lots of improvisation, bloopers are bound to happen with Ash recalling one particular blooper that involved a certain type of prosthetic. “Oh that’s tough. There are so, so many,” said Ash. “From season three, Glenn had a mole on his penis and Dina offered to examine it for him.
Glenn set up this whole sheet with a slit in it and he would put his penis through it for Dina to look at. When we were shooting that, there was a take where I got my face really close… We had an actual prosthetic fake dick and it hit me in the face. I don’t know if they put that on the blooper reel or not because it’s not family friendly, but gosh did we laugh.” Not only is Ash a main staple in the show, but she also had the opportunity to write an episode in season three titled “Gender Reveal.” “…It was so fun to get to be the writer on-set every day and watch everybody do their thing,” said Ash. “Normally when you’re an actor and you’re not in the scene, you’re not there, but as a writer you have to be there for the whole thing. I was so in awe of how talented and funny this cast is and being able to come up and improvise jokes on the fly for everybody was so fun. Normally, we improvise a lot on the show, and I get to do that for myself, but that week I got to do it for everybody and a bunch of it ended up making it into the episode. It was really amazing, and it was a creatively fulfilling experience.” Besides costarring in Superstore, Ash is also the voice of Scorpia on the new She-Ra and the Princess of Power animated series on Netflix. “I was a huge She-Ra fan growing up,” said Ash. “It was my favorite cartoon, so the fact that I get to be on this new rebooted version is super surreal and cool. Season two starts airing April 26 so it’s very exciting. In season one, people got to meet my character Scorpia and there was a lot of fan love, which has been nice. But, in season two she has some really cool stuff and a really interesting storyline, so I’m excited for people to see it.” Tune in to Superstore Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Long Road to Freedom:
Procol Harum rebounded nicely with this collection of 11 songs recorded live in the studio over the span of three weeks. Instead of chasing trends, Procol Harum have clung to their commercially tinged prog-rock roots. While nothing approaches the band’s seminal 1967 smash debut single “Whiter Shade of Pale,” the crossroads of classical music and pop is represented here by “Sunday Morning,” a wistful ballad that starts with a snatch of Pachelbel’s “Canon” and is adorned by light string arrangements. Vocalist/ pianist Gary Brooker is at the helm, the only founding member still plying his trade within the confines of this storied British prog-rock band. As far as the Middlesex native is concerned, it’s a matter of him heeding his muse, a recommendation he makes to anyone contemplating a career in music. “I wouldn’t advise anyone to go into music until it demands that they do. If you’re a young rocket scientist, carry on with your rocket science and do your music on the side and then one day, you’ll find that you’re doing so much music and playing so many gigs, that you can’t really go into work to do rocket science anymore,” he said. “It makes more sense than rather just coming out and playing music thinking that you’re going to be a star.”

While shows like Billions, The Americans and the final season of Veep make their return, there really isn’t too much happening this month. There is hype around premieres of The Village and Imaginary Mary and the always entertaining iHeartRadio Music Awards, but we will have to wait and see if March will predict the popularity of these new and returning spring series.

Guidance Center And National Grid Help Students Think Big
O
n Feb. 12, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center and National Grid launched their new partnership with a Career Day talk at the Center for Community Adjustment (CCA), part of Nassau BOCES in Wantagh. The speaker was Juan Santiago, National Grid customer and community manager, who quickly won over the students with his engaging tale about his life and career journey, from his beginnings as a kid in Brooklyn who shared three pairs of jeans and a bed with his brother and was admittedly not all that interested in school. But he always dreamed big and went for what he called “stretch goals,” and it shows: Santiago’s career trajectory took him from a grocery store bagger to a successful Navy career to a National Grid meter reader and ultimately his current high-level role with National Grid, all while getting his degree online. He told the students that there are many paths to success, and if they put their hearts and minds to it, they could reach the highest levels. “Just because someone doesn’t take Assistant Principal Easton Hazell; Kathleen Wisnewski, National Grid customer and community manager; Lauren McGowan, Director a traditional route doesn’t mean they are any less motivated,” said Santiago. of Development at the Guidance Center; Juan Santiago, National Grid customer and community manager; Dena Papadopoulos, Mental Health Counselor at the Guidance Center; and Suzanne Martin, Youth Employment Specialist at the Guidance Center. Schoolyard Bullying Goes Online
A
recent study issued by the Pew Research Center reports that a majority of teenagers (59 percent) have experienced some kind of cyberbullying. The most common forms of harassment cited are name-calling and rumor-spreading. Other examples of cyberbullying against teens are: receiving explicit messages they didn’t ask for; continuous asking about their whereabouts, what they are doing and who they are with by someone other than a parent; physical threats; and having explicit images of them shared without their permission. The surveys were completed in 2018 by 743 teens and 1,058 parents living in the U.S. An equal number of boys and girls reported that they were harassed online. The vast majority of teens surveyed believe that online harassment is a problem and do not believe that tech companies, teachers
PARENTHOOD PLUS Andrew Malekoff and, least of all, politicians are capable of adequately addressing the problem. Although New York State has put legal muscle into the fight against bullying in schools with the Dignity for All Students Act, it is not enough to tackle this social problem. No amount of legislation and no penalties for intimidating schoolyard behavior, no matter how severe, can guarantee that children will be safe at all
times in, or outside of, school. In fact, the majority of cases that we see at North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center involve anxiety and depression, and of those, a large number of kids and teens report that they are being cyberbullied. It is no wonder that the teens who responded to the survey rate lawmakers as the least helpful in combatting cyberbullying. On May 7, 2018, First Lady Melania Trump launched her “Be Best” campaign to address online behavior and support children’s emotional well-being. Although this is a noble cause that she has chosen to champion, politically-motivated bipartisan cyberbullying among adults has been flooding social media at a frenzied pace. Some incite violence. For example, most recently, a political consultant who was indicted by a grand jury on a number of charges, including
obstructing a congressional investigation, posted a threatening photo on Instagram of the federal judge assigned to his case. The image was of the judge’s face with a rifle scope’s crosshair just above her head. At the same time teenagers have little faith in adults’ ability to address the problem, they expressed more confidence in parents’ ability to tackle cyberbullying. According to pediatrician Larissa Hirsch, “If you discover that your child is being cyberbullied, offer comfort and support. Talking about any bullying experiences you had in your childhood might help your child feel less alone.” Dr. Hirsch continues by suggesting you should make sure your child understands that he or she is not at fault, and that it reveals more about the bully’s nature than their own. If you decide to report a case of cyberbullying to your child’s school, be sure to tell your child in advance
and develop a plan that is comfortable for both of you. Save or take screenshots of any messages that are threatening as evidence and advise your child not to retaliate as that could lead to an escalation of the situation. If your child is the bully, Dr. Hirsch recommends, “Talk to your child firmly about his or her actions and explain the negative impact it has on others. Joking and teasing might seem harmless to one person, but it can be hurtful to another.” Finally, be a good role model by demonstrating positive online habits yourself. BOOK FEATURE
Local Author Gives Voice To Middle-Income, Midlife Residents BY TARYN SCHOFIELD

F
or many years, Floral Park native Valentina Janek has championed for the middle-income, midlife residents on Long Island as the president and founder of the Long Island Breakfast Club, which provides positivity, advocacy, support and career counseling for these residents after they come out of the corporate world. Janek has continued her impact on the community with the publication of her novel From Fired to Freedom—How Life After the Big, Bad Boot Gave Me Wings, a compilation of stories from those who have turned the struggles of being laid off in the middle of their lives into positive outcomes. “The book is separate from the club, but it was derived because of the club,” said Janek. Janek herself has experience coming out of the corporate world and attempting to re-enter the workforce
with too much experience, education and a cost of living that is not appealing to hiring Valentina Janek companies. After being let go from her job as an administrative operations manager at CMP Media, Janek realized the challenges middle class, midlife individuals face if let go from their jobs. The creation of the Long Island Breakfast Club and the publication of this novel were the result. “We help people who come on hard times and I was one of those people,” said Janek, who has funneled this passion into the growth of the club, which also provides networking, social-preneuring, mentoring and advocacy tips for its members. Six years in the making, the novel From Fired to Freedom, is a collective compilation of accounts from
individuals, members and friends of the Long Island Breakfast Club, who have received what Janek calls the “proverbial pink slip.” Aside from Janek, the 377-page novel is made up of accounts from 77 separate individuals and divided into sections comprised of funny interviews, positivity, facing reality, figuring out options, retirement, and experiences with former employers. “I finished this book because of the treasured people that came on board with me,” explained Janek. “Even though you did get that boot, you can survive and you will.” Janek hopes the accounts in the book will do more to spread awareness about the crisis faced by midlife residents in the middle class and the help the Long Island Breakfast Club can provide. “This is a combination of people that get it,” said Janek. “You’re not alone, which is how you feel when you lose a job. The worst things in life are a job loss, personal loss and
moving. Most of the stories in this book are very positive and everything has a silver lining.” Janek’s biggest goal is to invoke motivation and inspiration. “My biggest mantra is to tell people to get up, get dressed and show up, and that is what I will write in every book that I sign,” said Janek. The novel will be for sale on Janek’s website and on Amazon. Moving forward, Janek looks to expand the Long Island Breakfast Club by commissioning a class on how to write a book, CPR training and continued networking and counseling. “I want to be that person people want to hear to be positive and help others,” she said. “I want to explain to employees to be ready for the boot when it happens.”

group of students from Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, received invitations to present their psychological research projects at the Association of Psychological Science (APS) National Convention in Washington DC in May. This honor is most unusual because only a few dozen pre-collegiate researchers have been asked to present their original work in the 31 years that the APS has held its annual conference. At this convention, scholars from all over the nation and the world gather to network and share cutting-edge insights. The Sacred Heart Academy students, consisting of nine seniors and three juniors, will present and discuss their original research alongside professional researchers. “We all feel extremely humbled to be invited to present our research alongside undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs,” Colleen O’Connor, Class of 2019 said. “We are also honored to have the chance to speak to and learn from experts in the field.”

Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Last Licks Of Winter Lake Placid: a perfect end-of-season getaway BY CHRISTINA CLAUS
Cclaus@antonmediagroup.com
For those not ready to give up the chill and graceful beauty of winter, why not take a weekend trip up to the winter wonderland that is Lake Placid? The village with the same name as the nearby lake is a five-hour drive away from Nassau County, but a vast—and much needed—change in surroundings, with the tips of mountain peaks covered in white at all times and a frozen lake perfect for snow-filled activities.
M
y boyfriend and I packed the Durabed of the 2019 Chevy Silverado—perfectly roomy for a ton of ski gear—with our bags, a few bottles of wine, boots and room for more, and hit the road at 6:30 a.m. on a Friday morning. Now, a five-hour drive might seem pretty long, but we had curated a Spotify playlist to get us through. Although there were two of us in the front seat enjoying the personalized heating system and seat warmers, the Silverado would have comfortably fit a family of five, with plenty of leg room. After getting off I-87, it was as if we had been transported View from the top of Little Whiteface after taking the Cloudsplitter Gondola.

LAKE PLACID from page 19A into a winter wonderland, with frozen ice formations and ice climbers with their picks and ropes, a partially frozen river and a picturesque bridge covered in a recently fallen snow. At first, I was a bit weary because I hate driving in snow, but the truck handled extremely well. Going upstate, back down and each day of the trip around the village and to Whiteface Mountain called for many of twists and turns that the Silverado navigated with ease. Before checking into our lodging, we decided to use our Olympic Passports, a ticket I highly recommend when visiting the area as it allows you to visit several Olympic sites like the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, a quaint museum with interesting Olympic memorabilia. The passport also includes ice skating on the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, a tour of the combined bobsled/

luge/skeleton track, a tour of the Olympic Jumping Complex and elevator to the skydeck on top of the 120 meter jump tower and a scenic ride to the top of Little Whiteface on the Cloudsplitter Gondola. After the museum, we ventured onto Main Street, which is full of shops offering ski and skate rentals, a bookstore, a plethora of restaurants for all tastes, homemade décor stores, a popcorn shop with unusual flavors like mint chocolate, breweries, clothing stores and a four screen movie theater. It is on Main Street where you can nab a glimpse of the frozen lake between stores. Most of the restaurants in Lake Placid sit right on Mirror Lake, so each night and morning we were able to view couples walking hand in hand on the snowy lake or ice skaters practicing through the wall-length windows. way to learn about a family’s weekend plans and help them create the best sundae. Our hotel, Crowne Plaza Lake Placid (101 Olympic Dr.), sat atop a hill, allowing for mountain and lake views, and was within walking distance of all of the shops, restaurants and lake activities. Pulling up to the hotel, it was like walking into a Hallmark Christmas movie—you know the one, with the log cabin resort that the main character always ends up stranded in and the fireplace with a seating area perfect for a relaxing night after a day of skiing and romance and all. Our deluxe room was at the other end of the hotel, and just oozed a cozy feeling with its own in-room fireplace that captured my attention immediately as a spot for reading and a balcony with a view of the mountains and the snow that fell almost every day. While the Olympic sights are a must-visit, there are still so many activities happening on Mirror Lake every day. I would say a day could be dedicated to lake activities: ice skating, friendly games of hockey, a walk on the frozen lake, or a ride on the Toboggan Chute that launches riders straight onto Mirror Lake. Although we waited about an hour for dog sledding
(I’d suggest getting there when it opens at 10 a.m.), it was worth the wait to experience the beauty of Mirror Lake and its surroundings while watching little dog butts run along a path in front of you. On our last day, we headed to Whiteface Mountain, traveling just a few minutes outside of the Main Street area along a winding road filled with snow. We barely felt any bumps along the way, including the twisty ride up the mountain and into a lot where we had to parallel park in one of the last spaces with ease because of the surround vision and back-up camera. If you only use the Olympic Passport for one thing, make sure it’s the Cloudsplitter Gondola ride. Whether a skier or not, the ride takes you to the top of Little Whiteface from where you can view Vermont from someone else on the ride. The ride is a winter lover’s dream with overall breathtaking views as the ride climbs the mountain and once you reach the top, step out and look at the mountain tops above and lakes below. With a ton of activities, restaurants and gorgeous views, Lake Placid is a great spot for a family getaway, a romantic couples retreat or a friends vacation that will have you coming back for more.

T
he 5th Generation (5G) wireless network (WiFi) is the latest generation of mobile technology utilized by internet companies, cell phone carriers, and other technology providers—and is being bulldozed through our Long Island communities. This technology is, of course, touted as providing faster internet and streaming services, better cell phone coverage, and last but not least—vibrant, “smart cities.” The 5G technology enables many appliances and a multitude of technology devices to be hooked up to one control unit. This technology supposedly will reduce commute times and energy usage, and improve safety, courtesy of smart grid “efficiencies.”
FULL RUN
Wake-up Call Long Island: The 5th Generation (5G) Unlike the 4th Generation (4G) currently in use, that relies on huge 90-foot cell towers with about a dozen or so antenna ports each—the new, much improved 5G system uses “smart cell” facilities, each with up to 100 antenna ports. The 5G technology is expected to be anywhere up to 100 times faster than the current 4G technology, and capable of supporting over a billion devices. The 5G relies primarily on the bandwidth of the millimeter wave (MMW), which is between 30GHZ and 300 GHZ. The MMWs don’t travel well through buildings as buildings interfere with their signal. MMWs tend to be absorbed
by rain and plants. Also, high frequency waves like the MMWs have a much shorter wavelength that can’t travel far. To counter this problem, the 5G will utilize smaller cell stations (beam-forming technology) that will scramble/ unscramble and direct packets of data (this is how information is sent through WiFi) on a no interference path back to us, the users. How can this be done? By putting wireless antennas on every lamp post, utility pole, and possibly on homes and commercial buildings throughout entire neighbor-hoods, towns and cities. A relay aerial station will be placed every 984 feet. There has been heavy lobbying via the federal and state levels for some years now, for the purpose of enabling
telecom companies to have easier access for implementation of 5G technology—with no strings attached. In September 2018 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a Declaratory Ruling and Third Report and Order (DRO) that became effective on Jan. 14, to remove certain state and local regulatory barriers that inhibit the deployment of 5G infrastructure. New provisions will override any authority of the municipalities. Instead, granting authority to the information tech companies to decide cell tower locations on utility poles, streetlights, arenas, schools and college campuses. This is outlaying one of the greatest threats to public health. Our governing body knows
how much we love high technology. But for the cognitive individuals still among us, you will take vivid notice and have an issue with a telecom company installing a 5G cell facility outside your home, office, or your child’s school. The fact remains that 5G MMWs can penetrate human skin and could also promote antibiotic resistance. These waves also invoke a stress protein in plants, which can negatively affect humans and animals, who consume plants. INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
Your respect for all life lifts your noble spirit and you’ll walk as though crowned, a quiet, magnanimous, majestic power radiating. The tone draws harmonious allies to your side, some bearing gifts, some offering loyalty and service, more seeking to be taught. Please don’t doubt the value of what you offer, though it takes time to be assessed, felt and understood. Patience is your most cherished virtue, though paradoxically, what you treasure most won’t require you to wait. COPYRIGHT 2019 CREATORS.COM

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Graceful patience is your preferred tone, and you wear it beautifully this week as you manage all you’re responsible for, take on new interests and excuse the old knowing that even the most cherished and best-maintained things will wear out with extended use. It’s nobody’s fault; it’s just the nature of life. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). The week gets off to a slow start, giving you time to gather your strength and re-focus on your purpose -- or choose a new one, as the case may be. Only you know how right the path feels to you at this point. Don’t worry; you’ll make up for lost time. After Wednesday, every step you take will be equal to 10. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’ll grow in strength and capability, partly because you refuse to be any more dependent on others than is typical for you and humans in general. You’ll put in the effort to learn how to do certain things. You may still, in the end, wind up paying others to do these things, but it won’t be because you don’t know how. CANCER (June 22-July 22). A lot of times what we need to do is actually easier than what we’re doing now -- the steps are easier, the living they create is easier -- but it’s the change that’s difficult. Letting go of who you were in the old pattern is scary but worth it. It may help to start the new pattern before letting go of the old one. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). If you know how to use it, jealousy can be one of the most direct lines to your happiness. Because jealousy shows you what you want (as opposed to what society tells you you’re supposed to want). Work on translating the message of jealousy in a positive way so you can use it to inform your own plan and journey. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). A friend who makes you feel free to talk about what’s bothering you is an excellent friend indeed. And if you also can talk about what’s good in your life without worry of seeming boastful or inspiring envy, even better. Listen to the feedback such a person gives you this week, as it will be quite valuable. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). There’s a mystery. You’re not going to get to the bottom of it this week, no matter how you go about it. But if you play your cards right (as in, pay attention, follow all leads, act on your gut feelings), you’ll get to the next layer of this. And it’s far more interesting the deeper you go. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). There’s a time for every emotion. Even the really downer ones like regret and resentment can be productive in certain ways at certain times. But if you find yourself returning to any particular emotion too much, like it’s a habit or an addiction, it’s not time to favor that emotion so much as it’s time to get help with it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). It’s true that some people you know are better storytellers than others. More than once this week you’ll find yourself with the ones that go on and on, with no point in sight. Once you realize that what they’re really after is some much needed attention and love, you’ll know just what to do. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). The hours go by regardless of how they get filled. Days of boredom can be more stressful than days packed with action, even if the action isn’t of a favorite variety. This week, you need downtime but not too much of it. Long rests will actually be irritating to you. In general, you’ll be happier if you’re a little busy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Compelled to do something that doesn’t make sense? Is the reason why obscured, even to you? Maybe this thing isn’t good for you, but you still want it. Take a breath and look deeper at the need this thing could be fulfilling. Talk about it, write about it, face it with boldness. You’re onto something important here. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Is it greedy to you strive to get both your needs and your wants met? In this week’s case, “greed” will be defined by selfishness, and much will depend on how well your wants match up favorably with the wants of others. If your wants do not come at another person’s expense, mutual satisfaction and joy will be real.

‘Revenge Porn’ Legislation Passes On Feb. 25, Nassau County Legislators passed bi-partisan legislation to protect victims from vengeful acts of bullying, harassment and/or coercion in the form of “revenge porn.” Acts of revenge porn are defined typically as the posting or sharing of intimate images over the Internet, through social media channels or other electronic means. It is a violation of the law for someone who has been given the image by the victim to disclose or threaten to disclose the image with the “intent to cause material harm to the physical, mental, emotional or financial welfare” of the victim. “I am very happy to be a part of this proactive legislation which is sorely needed in the world of social media,” Legislator Laura Schaefer said. “Too many lives have been disrupted, upset and forever scarred as a result of one person’s malicious
distribution of intimate photos that never should have been shared.” The legislation would classify these vengeful acts as a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of $1,000 or up to a year in jail. Malicious distribution of nude or graphic images has serious ramifications for victims, emotional distress, isolation, cyberbullying as a result of displayed revenge porn, and even suicide. Additionally, many victims are resistant to come forward out of embarrassment and fear. It is estimated that women are twice as likely to be victimized by revenge porn, and the displaying of intimate images is a tool employed by domestic abusers to control their victims. “Victimizing women in ANY way should not be tolerated and this legislation takes a big step in the right direction,” added Schaefer. —Nassau County

Gillen Announces Full Restoration Of Millions In State Aid Town of Hempstead Supervisor Gillen applauded New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo for listening to her concerns and restoring $3.8 million dollars of AIM (Aid and Incentives for Municipalities) funding to the town budget. Under the state’s original proposal, Hempstead town faced $3.8 million worth of cuts to state aid, the most out of any other township/ village in the state. Gillen pressed state lawmakers in Albany and wrote a bi-partisan letter to the governor, with neighboring Republican Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, which called for a full restoration of funding cuts. “I want to thank Governor Cuomo for working with the town and restoring $3.8 million dollars’ worth of vital funding for essential services that our residents rely on,” said Gillen. “Hempstead Town would have
taken the biggest hit out of any other municipality in the state; therefore, restoration of this funding has been my top priority.” The Town of Hempstead is the largest township in the United States, boasting a population bigger than six states. Last month, Gillen directed the town’s 28 departments to identify areas of discretionary spending in each of their respective budgets to be considered for cuts. Gillen set a Feb. 15 deadline for departments to report efforts on offsetting the $3.8 million worth of local municipal aid that would have been removed from the proposed state budget. “I’d like to thank all of the town’s department heads for helping to put together revised budgets in case these cuts were not restored,” she said. —Town of Hempstead

Munch Madness Frozen food tournament-style showdown BY STEVE MOSCO SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
O
nce again it’s time for Munch Madness—that competitive time of year when snacks from the frozen food aisle are hand-picked for frozen a tournament-style smackdown. It’s time-honored favorites pitted against cocky newcomers; scrappy underdogs squaring off with unmatched dynasties; and awkward perennial losers who you feel really bad for because it’s clear they don’t belong versus literally any other challenger. A field of 16 was chosen by a seasoned professional in the snack food game—namely, me. Your food writer, Steve Mosco. As a frozen food enthusiast who was raised in the frigid end of the local supermarket, I have an intimate knowledge of every
product to grace those sub-zero shelves. A firm believer that frozen vegetables take up far too much real estate in the freezer and that anyone who spends their money on frozen breakfast foods ought to be barred from the aisle indefinitely, I take this cuisine more seriously than any so-called five-star meal. With my credentials laid out before you, I present to you the Munch Madness Tournament. Keep in mind that this list was whittled down from a much larger field that I do not have the space to list here, and the first-round matchups were chosen completely at random.
Round 1
Super Pretzels vs. Bagel Bites The first matchup seems like a no-brainer, and it is. Super Pretzels,
though soft and warm, do not stand a chance against Bagel Bites. For starers the salt is far too sparse on these pretzels. Secondly, Super Pretzels are only really good with some spicy mustard or cheese sauce on the side. And since neither mustard nor cheese is included, Super Pretzels have no shot. Bagel Bites on the other hand, which is essentially pizza on a bagel, can be eaten anytime. Hot Pockets (all products) vs. Jamaican Beef Patties Hot Pockets have come a long way. From humble beginnings of ham and cheese to an ever-growing array of fancier products, Hot Pockets have grown confident in its own abilities—but perhaps too confident? Hot Pockets suffer from serious mission drift, with the core values of a simple, lava-hot interior wrapped in a crust that is somehow both crunchy and rubbery, completely lost. Meanwhile, Jamaican Beef Patties have remained true to the core values it was founded upon. It’s spicy beef in a crust. Enough said. Ladies and gentleman, we have our first upset—Jamaican Beef Patties are moving to the second round. Smucker’s Uncrustables vs. State Fair Corn Dogs How someone thought peanut butter and jelly needed to simplified, I’ll never quite understand, but Uncrustables have a loyal following of rabid supporters—possibly people without the pantry space for a jar of peanut butter. State Fair Corn Dogs come in as a hot dog covered in corn batter served on a stick. Side note: I scorched my mouth

a tiny hot dog rolled in buttery pastry dough. Frozen wings are flavorless bastardizations of actual chicken wings. They are fine in a pinch, but crumble against all challengers. White Castle Cheeseburgers vs. Stouffer’s Macaroni & Cheese Here’s why Frozen White Castle Cheeseburgers are so great—they taste exactly like the burgers from an actual White Castle. It’s as if the quality of the burgers from actual White Castle is somehow less than ideal. Stouffer’s Mac & Cheese is warm, comforting and a meal in itself. All it really needs is a little touch of meat protein to put it over the top. And anytime a competitor needs something that wasn’t included in order to win, it’s an automatic loss. White Castle takes it. on a frozen corn dog that I failed to let cool long enough, and I still have the scar. Be that as it may, Uncrustables has no shot. It doesn’t even have crust. Corn Dogs, moving on. Morning Star Farms Chik’n Nuggets vs. Totino’s Pizza Rolls Chik’n Nuggets? Uh, no. In what will be the most lopsided victory of the entire tournament, it’s Totino’s Pizza Rolls by a mile-wide margin. Gorton’s Fish Sticks vs. El Monterey Chicken Taquitos First of all, who else grew up thinking it was Gordon’s and not Gorton’s? Am I living in a parallel universe? Be that as it may, Fish Sticks are a classic treat that stands as the lone ocean entry, winning points for originality and crispiness.
Round 2
El Monterey Chicken Taquitos are essentially rolled up tacos without wilted garbage lettuce or flavorless tomatoes. That said, it works. The cheesy, smoky chicken devastates with flavor, while the bad reputation of fish sticks alone is enough to sink Gorton’s. Frozen Pizza (various brands) vs. El Monterey Beef and Cheese Burritos Under the frozen pizza tent is included Red Baron, Mama Celeste, Newman’s Own, Ellio’s, Tombstone and numerous others. Here’s the problem with frozen pizza—this is Long Island. Chances are there’s a fine pizzeria sharing the same shopping center as the supermarket. Just get a pizza there. El Monterey Burritos wins.
Tyson Any’tizers Hot ‘N Spicy Chicken Wings vs. Hebrew National Beef Franks in a Puff Pastry Blanket (pigs in a blanket) To me, Pigs in a Blanket takes this easily, and here’s why—there has never been and there will never be a frozen chicken wing that can compete with
Bagel Bites vs. Jamaican Beef Patties The first match in the second round sees Bagel Bites riding high—the combination of pizza ingredients on a mini-bagel are a bite-sized slam dunk when the munchies take hold. And yet, somehow the allure of island life draws me back to thoughts of Jamaican Beef Patties. The spicy beef hidden within that impossibly golden crust is actually well-seasoned with eye-opening jerk flavors. Meanwhile, by comparison, Bagel Bites are far more shallow in overall taste. Yes, this is happening. I’m going to the jerk store. Jamaican Beef Patties are on to the next round.

MUNCH from page 33A State Fair Corn Dogs vs. Totino’s Pizza Rolls Who doesn’t love food on a stick? With frozen corn dogs, the heavy hot dog essence isn’t relegated to the tubed meat, as that singular flavor also seeps well into the corn bread casing. And folks, that is not a bad thing. The only downside to a corn dog is that the stick itself is not edible. Meanwhile, Pizza Rolls are also a singular food item. The thing is, they are called Pizza Rolls, but they don’t necessarily taste like pizza. And somehow, that makes Pizza Rolls better. The flavor within the crust is something that exists precisely nowhere else in the culinary world. It’s as unique as the Pizza Roll itself, and it is carrying Totino’s to the next round. El Monterey Chicken Taquitos vs. El Monterey Beef Burritos It’s the battle of El Monterey! This showdown is exactly what makes Munch Madness so special. A completely random drawing leads to these two Munch Mavens of Mexico in a heated face-off. Taquitos with the ulta-crispy exterior and stringy chicken
on the inside are up against the big beefiness of the burritos. And that’s what ends up deciding this—the big beefiness of these burritos isn’t quite big enough. Taquitos takes this matchup of crosstown rivals. Pigs in a Blanket vs. White Castle Cheeseburgers Teeny-tiny hot dogs in their warm flaky crust—it’s buttery, salty, doughy and downright fun to eat. Then there’s frozen White Castle, which as we established before is just as good as the burgers from an actual White Castle. But in round two, that is not a good thing. White Castle is just too soggy, too limp and too weak to make this a close one. It’s Pigs in a Blanket moving on.
Round 3
Jamaican Beef Patties vs. Totino’s Pizza Rolls In any other situation, these two champions of munchie time would be great friends. They share similar strengths— enticing exteriors and a surprisingly well-established inner flavor. They also share similar shortcomings—you have to let them cool before eating or suffer

the consequences of third-degree burns in your mouth. The one quality that Pizza Rolls has over Beef Patties is their strength in numbers. You can sit down with 20 Pizza Rolls and never tire of popping them into your waiting maw. Unfortunately for Beef Patties, this is the deciding factor. Pizza Rolls move on to the finals! Totino’s Pizza Rolls vs. Pigs in a Blanket First, a standing ovation for our two deserving finalists. If it were up to me, we would call this a draw and
go home to eat fistfuls of both. But the Munchie gods must be satisfied. Both snacks are well-suited for snack time, whether that happens at 3 p.m. or 3 a.m. Both offer texture, as well as taste. But only one stands as the
complete package of crunch, heat, saltiness, and ..cheesiness. That’s right, after a long journey to the top of the mountain, Totino’s Pizza Rolls is the winner of Munch Madness 2019. See ya next year!

The museum offers exhibits that distort the senses. today, we hope people who leave look at the world slightly different.” Having started in Croatia in 2015, the museum’s concept combines architecture, design, psychology and math with some classic illusions and more illusions from the 19th century. This fun museum offers a great place to take a cool photo with a friend in different rooms, with exhibits from photo or optical illusions to rooms that may make one dizzy. View photo illusions with unusual backgrounds, optical illusions that confuse the eyes and the brain—a reminder that the senses are imperfect and perceptions of the world are often distorted—and holograms that show the story of evolution. While some museums do not allow visitors to partake in its art installations, the Museum of Illusions is the exact opposite. From the bottomless pit to a kaleidoscope created by visitors instead of the usual patterns, to a chance to become a head on a platter, the Museum of Illusions has something for everyone.

“I remember the first Saturday we opened, Sept. 22, 2018, this gentleman from Long Island called before it opened and said he want to celebrate his 70th birthday with 22 family members at the museum,” said Gjoni. “He brought his children, grandchildren, sisters. This 70-year-old gentleman had a blast in this museum and right after that we had a birthday party with a bunch of kids.” Along with birthday parties, events and group visits, Gjoni said the museum sees many couples on dates, including two couples who have gotten engaged with the backdrop of illusions, and patrons who have already visited more than four times. Along with installations, the museum has various rooms meant to boggle minds, including the rotated room, which seems to be the latest craze on social media newsfeeds. The chair illusion allows one to appear small on a chair next to someone who appears at a normal size, while the Ames room offers a similar concept, but without the chair. The infinity room allows one to take a photo at every angle all at once, as it is a room of mirrors. “My office is above the color room and I could hear people talk and they all say, ‘Oh, this is the Instagram room,’” said Gjoni of visitors’ favorite room. “A few weeks later, it was the reverse room and there were masses of people waiting to go in the ‘Instagram room.’ A couple weeks later it was the Ames room. It just comes and goes. I have no idea why it’s popular. Social media has a funny way of attracting people.” While visitors’ tastes change each

week, Gjoni said his favorite room is the tilted room. “It’s more sensory illusion,” said Gjoni. It’s a very simple room with a tilted floor, mirror and ceiling. When you look in the mirror, you feel like you’re losing your balance and then once you close your eyes, you realize it’s just messing with you and then you open your eyes again.” The 5,000-square-foot museum located at 77 Eighth Ave., New York, has had more than 120,000 visitors since it opened and is looking to expand to create more rooms and installations in the future. e’ve entered the final full month of regular season NHL action and while some teams are making a late season push into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, others are just counting the days until they can wrap their season officially and head to the golf course. For the local teams, we’ve had a tale of two franchises going in reverse directions. Let’s take a closer look at these teams, their seasons thus far and what the immediate or distant future holds.
New York Islanders
Mathew Barzal is the star of this successful Islanders season.
Coming off of an offseason that saw captain John Tavares walk away from the Islanders, you would think it would be difficult for them to rebound. However, the arrival of Stanley Cup winner Barry Trotz as head coach and the rise of the talent they have
drafted over the years has now put the Islanders in contention for a top seed in the playoffs. The star of the show has been 21-year-old Mathew Barzal, a center who played his first full season last

year and won the Calder Award for scoring 85 points despite the Islanders’ rough campaign. This year, he is the current team leader in points and assists. He was named to the NHL All-Star team, the only member of the Islanders to get the nod this year. Other key players include Josh Bailey, captain Anders Lee and Brock Nelson. These three centers are longtime members of the franchise who have all played well on the ice, combining for 129 points as of Feb. 26. Robin Lehner has been saving .930 percent of shots through 33 starts, which sits among the top 5 in the league. In the final 20 games, the Islanders will be tested numerous times. On the horizon are two games against the Washington Capitals, Trotz’ old team and reigning champions looking to win the division for the fourth year in a row. They will also have to face out of division battles with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Winnipeg Jets. It’ll be a tough last month, but it looks like we’ll be seeing playoff games at Nassau Coliseum very soon.
New York Rangers After contending for the playoffs for seven straight seasons, including three appearances in the conference finals and one Stanley Cup Final appearance, the 2017-18 season was the first year the Rangers missed the playoffs since 2009-10. The team traded franchise players Ryan McDonagh, Rick Nash and J.T. Miller and let go of
head coach Alain Vigneault at the end of that season. This team was on its way to a rebuild. Boston University head coach David Quinn took over the Rangers, with the idea of developing a young unit while trying to build around the final years of Lundqvist. Heading into this year, there was some hope from the fans and organization that they could compete for the playoffs. Despite a few bright spots early on, that quickly fell apart. Their fate was cemented with a five-game losing streak in January and inconsistent showings ever since. Now near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, the Rangers have traded away a few more franchise players Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes. A shell of its former self, the Rangers will need to look for an identity beyond their goalie. Mika Zibanejad has been a star for the team with 62 points this season as of Feb. 26. If they stay on team heading into the 2019-20 season, Zibanejad and Chris Kreider will be two of the main veterans on the team at the ages of 25 and 27, respectively. In terms of the young stars that could grow into something more, the Rangers will have to rely on future draft picks as well as the development of guys like Pavel Buchnevich, Anthony DeAngelo, Neal Pionk and 19-year-old Filip Chytil. Alexander Georgiev, at age 22, currently sits behind Lundqvist as potential goalie insurance just in case, but it’ll be sometime before he can be a sure-fire replacement for The King.
