he fish-out-of-water sitcom premise is one that can yield comedy dividends if executed properly. In the case of the CBS series The Neighborhood, creator Jim Reynolds uses his real-life experience of being the patriarch of a white Midwestern family moving into a predominantly African-American community to great effect. But even with the best material, a show is only as good as its leads. In this case, Reynolds’ secret weapon is Cedric the Entertainer, who not only serves as lead character Calvin Butler, but is also an executive producer on The Neighborhood. Born Cedric Antonio Kyles, the Missouri native already had a deal in place with the network for developing different projects when he was approached with the

concept the former Big Bang Theory writer had come up with. “[CBS] wanted us to meet and see if I was interested in this show. They were definitely into having me on the network,” Kyles recalled. “They loved this idea, it just needed a lot more shaping. I ended up meeting with Jim, walked through it and went through the creative process of making sure that we were trying to say the same things. We were able to come to an understanding and were able to come out with this great show. It’s been a really fun ride.” Max Greenfield (New Girl, Ugly Betty) plays Dave Johnson, a professional conflict negotiator who moves to an L.A. neighborhood with his school principal wife (Beth Behrs of Two Broke Girls) and son Grover (Hank Greenspan). While Butler matriarch Tina (Tichina Arnold of Everybody Hates Chris)

and adult sons Malcolm (Sheaun McKinney of Vice Principals) and Martin (Marcel Spears) are accepting of their new neighbors, Kyles’ Butler is concerned the Johnsons will disrupt the culture on the block

CEDRIC from page 3 and doesn’t appreciate the new guy’s extreme neighborliness. As both an executive and lead on the show, the veteran stand-up comedian is ideally hoping the cast provokes as much conversation as it does laughs. “As a creative person, I needed to be able to have the power to have the influence on that. So that’s where my executive producer title comes from. I really helped to shape the show we have on the air now. I continue to make sure that this voice is present. Being that we’re 22 episodes in and people have all kind of crazy ideas about what the episode should be, I kind of stay grounded and focused on telling the story of Calvin, Dave Johnson and their families and how these two families come to live next to each other,” he said. “I think we have a really great cast and from the point of view of trying to make sure that we tell the story from both sides without having one side be right or wrong. It feels like the right way to do things, and that’s what makes it so people can watch it and not assume that we’re attacking anybody. We’re only being these people.” Growing up in Berkeley, MO, Kyles graduated from Southeast Missouri

whetted during a 10-grade talent show singing baritone in a group covering the Ray, Goodman & Brown R&B chestnut “Special Lady” (“The crowd went crazy and I knew I could do this.”). It was during his State Farm time that Kyles was encouraged by a stand-up comedy acquaintance who was constantly borrowing the former’s quips for his own act. The latter eventually enrolled Kyles in a local 1987 open-mic contest, in which he won the $500 first prize (“And I was rich!”). It was during the first three years of a career that found the insurance adjuster hitting the comedy club stages at night where the comic earned the moniker “Cedric the Entertainer.” “The first part of my career, I definitely likened myself to a singer, which is kind of how the name The Entertainer came about,” he explained. “I would sing. I would do poems. I would do a few minutes’ worth of jokes. But I would do all these things on stage that wasn’t just about comedy. That’s how I got the moniker The Entertainer and not just something I made up. It was something that I used to do when I came to the stage.” That Swiss Army knife-approach of tackling different projects has served Kyles well. He’s not only parlayed his malleability into a number of hit television shows (The Steve Harvey Show, The Last O.G.), but myriad film roles (Barbershop, The Original Kings of Comedy, Ice Age) and even a 2008 stint on Broadway starring in a revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo alongside John Leguizamo and Haley

Joel Osment. Kyle prides himself as a performer whose career trajectory was informed by a desire to always be continually progressing via different artistic projects and challenges. Failure even provided him with the example of staying true to oneself, a point driven home by good friend Steve Harvey. “I had performed at a big corporate event in New York and there were a lot of agents and people that I thought were important. I had given them way too much credit for being better than me and I tried to change my set and everything, thinking I was making them happy. And I bombed,” he recalled. “Steve walked up after me and went off on the whole crowd. He let this crowd have it, basically saying, ‘Y’all sit up in your offices with your suits on and don’t know funny. This is one of the funniest dudes in the world.’ He went off and they were dying because he was literally letting them have it about themselves. They were laughing so hard and I was watching it. And he came off and said, ‘Never change for this. Never change for people. Let them come to you.’ I was already successful. I had a deal and was making money. To have that experience thinking you have to change for somebody because you want to be loved is just the wrong attitude. I try to tell that to other comics and I try to do that consistently with myself.” The Neighborhood airs on CBS. Check local listings for air times. elcome back to baseball. After a long winter break, America’s original pastime has returned and teams have already scratched the surface of their 162game slate. It’s still early enough in the season that fans of all 30 teams can have hope for a World Series championship. That’s no different for the New York Mets and New York Yankees. Each of them retooled their rosters in the offseason and are looking for plenty of success in year two under their current managers. Here’s a look at the season ahead for our two teams and what will need to happen in order for them to be successful.

New York Mets Aaron Judge enters his fourth season as the Yankees star slugger. He’ll look to lift this team to its 28th World Series title.

The Mets are coming off another tough year, now three seasons removed from their run to the World Series. Lots of last year’s issues had to do with injuries to key players, such as outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who will continue to remain out recovering from surgery on both heels. The Mets had to trade away some of the players that were keeping the Mets in games, such as Asdrubal Cabrera and fan favorite Wilmer Flores. But in manager Mickey Callaway’s second year as leader in the clubhouse, there is reason to believe that this Mets team will have an easier time staying in the playoff mix. While they didn’t land the likes of Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, the new faces in the organization today aren’t too shabby. Mets acquired infielder Robinson Canó from the Seattle

Mariners, and while he struggled in his time in the northwest, the eight-time All-Star showed promise in spring training. They also signed catcher Wilson Ramos to a two-year deal, and the investment may end up being worthwhile. He had 117 hits, 70 RBIs and 15 home runs last season and has shown in spring training that he could likely put out similar production. In terms of players who were already on the roster, outfielder Michael Conforto will look to stay healthy this season and continue to bring homerun prowess to a team that desperately needs it. Brandon Nimmo has already proven he can be a young star in this league with his solid at bats. He’ll continue to fly under the radar by most of the league, but his consistent production should keep this team in the field. The Mets will need that offensive firepower to compliment a strong pitching staff, led by Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom and 27-yearold Noah Syndergaard.

New York Yankees The Yankees are coming off a second straight playoff season, which was cut short in the divisional round when they lost to their rival Boston Red Sox. This is a young team with a manager with one year of experience under his belt in Aaron Boone, so its easy to see why there may be some missteps for them. But they are a team ripe with talent and it’d be surprising not to see this team make a deep playoff run. The team will be led by its star slugger Aaron Judge, who is entering

Get Excited For Spring Vegetable Gardening BY KAREN MUSGRAVE

specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

G

et ready to dig into spring as the garden is slowly waking up. Although many people typically think of tulips and daffodils at this time of year, now is also the time to ‘dig in’ and plant your cool weather vegetables. ‘ Start by deciding where the garden will go and how much space you have available. Look for an area that has full sun throughout the day. Next determine the size of the space you have. Measure it and jot down the measurements for when you go to the nursery to shop for plants. Next, it’s time to get digging. Vegetable gardens prefer rich, dark soil. Dig down into the dirt with a garden shovel and loosen it up. The

soil should drain well so water does not sit in puddles for any length of time. If your soil is poor add compost. Here’s the hard part—using restraint when choosing your veggies. I know you want to buy them all but you should only buy what you have room to grow. By following the spacing requirements for each plant, you will grow more fruit, your plants be happier and there will be less possibility of insects and disease. Now through mid-April is a great time to plant cool weather crops such as lettuce, onions, carrots, kale, radishes and spinach to name a few. These types of veggies

perform best in daytime temperatures that are around 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit and will tolerate some light frost. They are harvested in late June through July before the heat of summer. It’s important to be water-wise. Water your vegetable garden only when the soil is dry and needs it. Deep, but infrequent watering two or three a week is best if there is no natural rainfall. More is not always better—excess watering may encourage insect and disease problems. As for the soil, choose an organic, slow release vegetable fertilizer for your plants. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer you choose. Again, more isn’t

always better. Fresh picked vegetables from your own garden are tastier and more nutritious than store-bought vegetables. And, vegetables really grow themselves—all you have to do is help them out a little so they can be their best. Spring is a wonderful time to get outdoors, enjoy the cool spring air and dig in to cool weather vegetable gardening. Karen Musgrave, CNLP, is a marketing and education specialist at Hicks Nurseries

HOME & GARDEN

Gardening Made Easy For Beginners BY RAE STEINBACH

specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

I

t can seem difficult to fit a garden into your busy schedule and limited space, but gardening is a relaxing and engaging hobby that can also have significant benefits on your mental health. Spring is the perfect time of year for many plants, making it a great time to start your first garden. On the other hand, plants can die for a number of reasons, and managing your first garden can be overwhelming with so many tasks to stay on top of. These tips will help you keep your plants healthy throughout the spring and have the garden you’ve dreamed of by the end of the summer.

Find a well-lit area

There may not be many places in and around your home that see consistent natural light, especially if you live in a small apartment. That said, most garden plants need several hours of light each day in order to grow effectively, so it’s important to put them in the best location possible. If you aren’t able to find a place for your plants that receives a sufficient quantity of light, consider switching

to seeds that grow well with less light. A variety of suitable house plants, including ivy, snake plants, and a wide selection of ferns, can be grown effectively in a low-light environment.

Supplement your soil

It’s common for new gardeners to assume that their plant will grow to the same size in any soil, but the truth is that the pH level of the soil as well as other factors can influence plant growth. Soil test kits are widely available for purchase, or you can contact a local laboratory for professional services. Gardeners often choose to add compost and other natural ingredients to their soil, all of which promote plant growth. When working in a yard, a lightweight wheelbarrow can help you carry these materials;

you don’t want to hurt yourself lugging around heavy bags. Start with a mixture of compost, grass clippings, old leaves, and manure if available for the best possible results. Additionally, a laboratory will also be able to provide information on any nutrients lacking in your soil sample.

Regularly check and maintain your plants

Much of the work involved in gardening happens at the front end, but growing plants require consistent watering as well as weeding and fertilization. Newly planted seeds should be watered every day, but you can eventually reduce the frequency as they begin to grow. Fertilizing your plants can also have a positive effect on their growth, so use a dry fertilizer roughly halfway through

the growing season to help your plants stay healthy. Liquid fertilizers, on the other hand, should be applied roughly once a month for best results. Gardening can be an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding hobby, but it’s easy to become discouraged quickly if things don’t go your way. These gardening tips are all you need to get your first garden started and do everything you can to help your plants grow. Tips To Manage Seasonal Allergies

D

id you know that more than 24 million Americans—and 6 million children—suffer from seasonal allergies? We are near the peak of allergy season when dry, watery itchy eyes, sneezing and stuffiness take over what should be a bright and happy welcome to spring. Allergic rhinitis, or more commonly known as allergies, is an inflammatory disease which develops when your immune system becomes sensitized and overreacts to something in the environment. The most common seasonal allergies stem from tree pollen. There are two types of allergies: seasonal and perennial. People with seasonal allergies are typically affected by allergen prevalent throughout the various seasons, namely spring, summer, and fall. These allergens can be from mold spores or pollen from trees, grass or weeds. Conversely, those with perennial allergy experience allergy symptoms face year-round afflictions, most commonly related

to dust mites or pet dander. Allergy symptoms typically include itchy nose, itchy eyes and throat, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose or feeling tired due to poor sleep. “While many of us know about allergy symptoms, we may not correlate the constant fatigue felt throughout the day with them directly. When allergies are severe enough, it can negatively impact your quality of life,” said Dr. Robert Marchlewski, an allergist and asthma specialist at ENT and Allergy Associates in Garden City. “We suggest that individuals consult their allergist to get a better idea of their own allergies and find the best path forward in treating them.”

Allergy testing is one of the most certifiable means in which to identify potential allergies. Through skin-prick testing or blood examinations, physicians can more accurately predict allergic reactions. Correctly identifying allergy triggers is a key component of effective management. Treatment options for allergies can vary based on the person, but the most common and accessible treatment options are environmental control, medications, and immunotherapy. For the upcoming pollen allergy season, there are steps you can take to help to reduce your allergy symptoms. Try staying indoors whenever possible, especially when pollen counts

are high or at their peak. You also may want to keep windows of your home, workplace and car closed during peak pollen seasons. It’s also a good idea to use air conditioning whenever possible, especially in warmer weather. Be sure to wash your hands and face to remove pollen and shower and shampoo your hair at bedtime to wash off accumulated pollens. It’s also smart to wash bedding once a week using hot water. For persistent symptoms, many allergy sufferers pursue the use of medications—either prescribed or over-the-counter—to ease the harsh allergy side effects. Intranasal steroid and antihistamines are commonly used for this purpose. For some, immunotherapy may be recommended, of which there are two types: allergy shots and sublingual tablets (under-the–tongue). A Bird’s Eye View

A roundup of the best places for bird watching on the island

Floral Park’s Centennial Gardens (Photo by Anthony Murray)

S

pringtime is officially upon us. But we’re not the only ones who are ready to enjoy the nice weather. Our feathery friends are too, and here are some local places where you can spot them on the island.

1

Centennial Gardens

Located in Floral Park, this 12-acre parcel of land serviced the residents of the Village of Floral Park for more than 70 years as an active storm basin. After years of deciding on how to reinvent the active storm basin, the village converted a portion of a storm basin into a bird sanctuary and special planting area. Spot some of your favorite birds including robins, cardinals, starlings, blue jays, morning doves, mockingbirds, gold finches and many more. 251 Floral Pkwy., Floral Park.

2

Cold Spring Harbor State Park

Cold Spring Harbor State Park is another great choice to spot birds. The park is comprised of 40-acres of hilly terrain offer scenic views of the Cold Spring Harbor and is also ideal for observing spring and fall migrations of a variety of songbirds. Cold Spring Harbor State Park is home to great horned owls and red-tailed hawks and serves as the northern trailhead of the Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt Trail that extends to Bethpage State. 95 Harbor Rd., Cold Spring Harbor.

3

Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge is located on the north shore of Long Island, which has 3,209-acres and is designated 12A | SPRINGTIME! • APRIL 3 - 9, 2019

as a significant coastal fish and wildlife habitat. The refuge is especially important for wintering waterfowl such as black ducks, greater scaup, bufflehead, canvasback and long-tailed ducks. A variety of other water birds including shorebirds, terns and cormorants also use Oyster Bay. Oyster Bay has the greatest winter waterfowl use of any of the Long Island national

wildlife refuges. The refuge is open to the public, although there is no physical address. Call 631-286-0485 or email longislandrefuges@fws.gov.

4

Garden City Bird Sanctuary

Similar to Floral Park’s Centennial Gardens, Garden City’s Bird Sanctuary was a former storm water basin. After redevelopment of the area, the bird sanctuary is now is a seven-acre community nature preserve and is managed by The Garden City Bird Sanctuary, Inc., a certified nonprofit organization. Some of the birds that can possibly be seen include the American crow, the Northern cardinal, red-tailed hawk, ruby-throated hummingbird and more. Opposite 181 Tanners Pond Rd., Garden City.

Feed, Feed Birdie BY ANTHONY MURRAY Not only is watching birds a fun activity to do during the springtime, but feeding birds can also be a fun downtime activity too. Wild Birds Unlimited of Syosset is one place where you can find a wide variety of different bird food and other bird-related items. Stella Miller who is the Conservation, Education and Outreach manager at Wild Birds Unlimited recently answered some questions about the bird food related products. Located at 625 Jericho Tpke., Wild Birds Unlimited offers expert advice and solutions to its customers and hosts monthly programs, events and workshops while providing information and guidance on how to create backyard habitats for birds and other wildlife with native plants, and important information about issues that birds face. Q: Is there a certain type of bird food that is favored/best? A: You just cannot go wrong with black oil sunflower, either in the shell or shelled. The seeds are meatier with a higher oil content, providing birds with more nutrition and energy than other seed.

5

Elizabeth A. Morton Wildlife Refuge

The Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge, a 187-acre peninsula on Noyack and Little Peconic Bays, boasts exceptionally diverse habitats. Established in 1954, the Morton National Wildlife Refuge consists of upland forest, fields, ponds, salt marsh, beach and a lagoon. These habitats are used by a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, eastern chipmunk, painted turtles, green frogs, songbirds and osprey. Piping plover, terns, and other water birds use the beach during the spring and summer months. Elizabeth A. Morton Wildlife Refuge is located at 2595 Noyack Rd., in Sag Harbor.

Black oil is easier for small birds to crack due to a thinner shell. Peanuts are another highly desirable food if you want to attract woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches and titmice. Q: Why are bird feeders so important and what should consumers know if new to this? A: Feeding birds a high quality diet is important because it helps give them a leg up when times are rough. During the winter that extra energy is sometimes the difference between life and death during a frigid night; and during spring when food is scarce because winter seeds have been depleted and insects have yet to hatch out. Come fall, birds need to fatten up for migration as well as the colder weather. Offering your backyard birds a high quality food as well as a water source is not just good for them—it brings joy to us and helps foster an awareness of our natural world and the wildlife that we share that world with. Q: What are the expenses/investment like to maintain a bird feeder? A: Feeding birds doesn’t have to be expensive nor time consuming. We can assist customers with a wide range of feeders to suit every budget and lifestyle. But, fair warning it can become addicting.

Welcome Back To The ’80s

American artist Eric Fischl brings the decade to life BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON

he ’80s are back in fashion again and the Nassau County Museum’s latest exhibit allows visitors to experience That ’80s Show Rebel with a Cause, which runs from March 16 to July 7. The ’80s were extravagant, the time of Studio 54, Charlie’s Angels, the 1980 Winter Olympics with the U.S. hockey team winning the gold medal, and punk rockers, just to refresh your memories. Museum president Angela Susan Anton was pleased to kick off the evening’s event. The curatorial advisor of the show was Eric Fischl, a New York artist, who is an international art star and is considered to be a painter of the suburbs. He and

museum director Charles Riley, have put together a dynamic show featuring more than Eric Fischl one hundred (Photos by E. Johnson) works by all of the great personalities of the ’80s, including Fischl, April Gornik, Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Ross Bleckner, Bryan Hunt, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Jenny Holzer, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Lemieux, Charlie Clough,

Madonna and the Ramones, David Bowie and the B-52s were rocking the Palladium and the Mudd Club; the Dow was rocketing and Wall Street was in the movie theaters; the Islanders built a dynasty and the Berlin Wall was torn down. The artists were on top of a media craze that foretold of the digital era and riding a flood of investment in the art market. Love Bugs Tiffany & Co. is ready for spring with the launch of its new collection this spring, Return to Tiffany Love Bugs. The new collection reinvents the iconic Return to Tiffany by deconstructing its forms and design elements and recombining them into something completely new. Inspired by an urban garden, the key elements of the collection—the silver, the engraving, the simple shapes—have been taken apart and put back together again into whimsical butterflies, blossoms, birds and bugs. The designs have been elevated through the addition of gold, colored stones like amethyst, blue topaz and citrine. The collection includes silhouettes like stickpins, brooches, pendants and rings that bring a fine jewelry sensibility. —Jennifer Fauci

FOOD

THE KNOWLEDGE YOU NEED FOR THE LIFE YOU WANT

The Crucible Of Cookware BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jFauci@antonmediagroup.com

T

he French know food. They also know how to make premium crockery. Since 1925, Le Creuset, the manufacturer best known for its colorfully-enameled cast-iron cookware, has inspired people everywhere to enjoy time in the kitchen and around the table. “Beloved by home cooks and master chefs alike, the Le Creuset name reflects three essential truths, or Les Trois Vérités, which celebrate the company’s proud heritage as the first in colorful cookware, the finest in quality and design and the favorite for generations,” said Nate Collier, director of marketing for Le Creuset. Le Creuset, which is French for the crucible, has earned a spot on the must-have list for many culinary enthusiasts and home cook, specifically for its Dutch oven, the holy grail of cast-iron cookware. “The most traditional use for a Dutch oven would be for stews and braises, the traditional beef bourguignon or coq au vin all the way green chile pork, but a Dutch oven is such a versatile tool,” said Collier, adding that it can also be used to deep fry chicken or bake professional quality bread. Voted as the #1 Dutch oven in the culinary world by America’s Test Kitchen, Le Creuset’s respect for the heritage of the brand means never making sacrifices to

the product. Varying in different sizes and price points, according to Collier, the company’s products have been made in the same foundry in northern France since its inception. “Our enameling process has been perfected over the 90 plus years, resulting in easy maintenance and, of course, our beautiful colors,” said Collier of Le Creuset’s stunning spring line, which features a color palette of cool hues like Sea Salt, Meringue and Fig. “Consumers want a brand and a product they can trust, and hopefully that is what we represent.” A lover of cooking and baking, my first foray with my Dutch oven came by way of chicken meatball soup on my gas stove. The smooth enamel helped to melt onions and cook carrots and celery beautifully as they slid around the stick-free bottom. The 4.5 quart pot made plenty of soup for six people and cleanup was a breeze. Now that spring promises fresh vegetables, I am excited to make vegetable soup, quiches and attempt a rosemary focaccia. Handwash Le Creuset cookware in hot, soapy water after it cools and dry it well. This is definitely a piece that will be in my kitchen cabinets for well over 30 years. Upgrade your kitchen with Le Creuset and see the new collection by visiting www. lecreuset.com.

Cupcake Decorating For The Season BY CHRISTINA CLAUS

cclaus@antonmediagroup.com

E

ach season has its own signature baking décor: summer, beach; fall, pumpkins; winter, holidays and snowmen; and finally spring, flowers, eggs and newborn animals. With the thought of these little creatures in mind and Easter candies on store shelves, spring cupcakes can be decorated with pastel icings and adorned with candy wildlife. One base chocolate cupcake can be utilized to create a variety of different cupcake looks. The chocolate can act as dirt, as the baker carefully pipes on pastel green colored icing with a jagged icing tip to give the effect of grass. With

the grass created, a yellow chick Peeps or purple bunny Peeps can sit atop the grass. Jelly beans with a splatter of color can sit atop the grass to look like eggs. If you want to get a little extra fancy, pipe on some brown colored icing with a small circular tip to give the effect of a nest before dropping on the jelly beans. Bakers can even create a butterfly using candies to sit atop the little cakes. Use white chocolate-covered pretzels as the wings with four M&Ms as the body. With that same chocolate cupcake, one can top it off with some chocolate icing and crushed Oreos. Coat a strawberry in orange

TREE SERVICE FREE ESTIMATE

colored white chocolate with a drizzle on top to make it look like a carrot and place it in the center of the cupcake. The chocolate cupcake can also accent swirled pastel yellow icing with a candy bee placed gently on the side. Bunny cupcakes are a treat sure to wow a crowd and make them coo “aw.” On top of either a vanilla, chocolate or funfetti cupcake, pipe a mound of white frosting. Cut a marshmallow in half diagonally into two pieces and then dip the cut side of each piece into pink sugar to coat. Place these atop the frosting—sugar

side up—to resemble ears. Gently push a pink jelly bean into frosting in front of the ears to form the nose and use tweezers to ease in brown sprinkles for the eyes. Springtime means the blooming of flowers, so why not let a flower blossom on a cupcake? For a sunflower, decorators can pipe out petals along the edge of the cupcake with the small jagged tip tool and place mini chocolate chips in the center to act as seeds. There are many other potential flower options from roses to hydrangeas, with step-by-step videos showing bakers the perfect piping techniques.

500 Years Of Exploration Recreating a Fantastic Voyage

BY ROBERT HEMM editorial@antonmediagroup.com

T

he spring of 2019 will soon see one very special celebration. It will mark the Spanish-led 500 years of exploration from 1519 to 2019 and will include many other nations. Spain’s ship, The Sebastian Elcano, named after Spanish explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano, will set sail on its journey to circumnavigate the world, heading south, through the Magellan Straits, into the pacific and on. A two-year journey duplicating Magellan in 1519, when many thought the world was flat. The “School” ship, the “Elcano”will also be used as a scientific platform. The around the world seafaring journey will begin in Boston Harbor when Spain’s training ship will sail into the harbor on Friday, April 26, with many other sailing ships from around the world joining in from April 26 lasting through Sunday the 28. The Boston celebration will be cohosted by The Explorers Club, an international organization dedicated to scientific expeditions who claim members with records of climbing the highest mountains, diving to the deepest oceans, first in space and first on the moon. Many will be part of the threeday celebration. Aside from the fireworks over the many ships, visitors will have a chance to visit the Spanish ship and meet the crew, and historic photo/video opportunity. The history of the first voyage is set at a time in the 16th century, 500 years ago when European countries, particularly Spain and Portugal, were so active in launching

expeditions for trade, and colonies in the New World that the Pope divided the Americas between them. Today, South and Central America as well as Mexico are mostly Spanish speaking, with Brazil speaking Portuguese. In the USA, Spanish is the second language. All of this due to explorations and the many ships, which took part, at considerable peril. Magellan was born in Portugal and moved to Spain. He petitioned the King of Spain, Charles V, only 19 years old, his plan to sail west and find a passage to reach the Spice Islands. Spice was worth more than gold, by weight and was a lucrative trade. The king of Spain funded Magellan’s expedition and after many difficulties, Magellan got as far as the Philippines when he was killed by natives in the battle of Mactan. With only two out of five

ships left, a captain named Sebastian Elcano took charge and sailed the one remaining ship the arduous 10,000 miles until finally reaching Seville, Spain. He arrived with a cargo of spices that paid for the expedition. Today, the expedition is known as the Magellan–Elcano Expedition. Fortunately, that journey today is without the fear of sea dragons and falling off a flat earth. But, still the port of calls along the way will raise large crowds with celebrations. The Elcano will collect water samples on a continuing basis in the oceans, seas and ports, which will be taken and analyzed on oceans and ports through the voyage. Scholars and scientists aboard will also be visiting all ports where celebrations will be held under the Spanish and Explorer’s Club Flags. Stay tuned to Anton’s travel section each month as we track the progress of this historic voyage around the globe. WORD FIND

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND Birds and animals

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’re really wanting some groundbreaking new study, product or method to come about to help you deal with a certain problem. And while you may find that, you’ll also find that the wisdom of elders or the common sense of everyday people will work just as well, if not better, to fix what ails you. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). It doesn’t matter how many people are theoretically in the game with you. What matters is who is actually on your side. The smallest community can be incredibly supportive. And there are times when a support system of one is all you really need. It’s a good week to remind yourself who your real people are. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Some things are valuable because they’re ubiquitous. Other things are valuable because they’re rare. Most things are valuable because they just are. That last one is impossible to put a price tag on, as it’s not a social c ommodity to be traded. Rather, it’s a spiritual principle to keep front of mind this week. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Your presence at gatherings will be important, namely for the fun and connections you’ll make. Furthermore, your talent for taking ideas that people are only subconsciously aware of and making them consciously present (often with artistic or humorous effect) will be key in the elevation of the group. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The main message to take in is that you’re OK; you belong; and you’re absolutely where you should be. There’s no better fit. This is where you’ll do the most good in the world. So accept yourself and all that’s going on with compassion, curiosity and a faith in the unfolding of things. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You thought you were aware of what you were saying and why you’re saying it, but today brings a whole new level to the game. Your deeper needs will be revealed. It’s good news, since knowing about a need is the first step in getting it fulfilled. A gentle and supportive attitude toward yourself will allow for success. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Make time for those who enrich you, lift your thinking, make you feel somehow more alive -- you know the type. You wish you’d met them earlier because of their positive influence on you. You’ll get around these people more often. Of course, you are such a person yourself, and you’ll shine in this way for others. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Accept tasks, but don’t accept roles. People don’t know who you are and what you can do. Even those close to you will cast you in any old way to suit themselves. Create your own role. Do the job like no one else could. Bring everything you have to it. Let your spirit, personality and intention infuse all you touch. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The product born of group work can be much stronger from the collaboration, or it can be so diluted that it’s actually less potent than any individual contribution. The difference is in the leadership. Who has the vision? And how well is that vision executed? Step up. You’re seeing this in a way that could benefit all.

You’ll go into this new solar journey with a heightened sense, like life is theater; every interaction is memorable and intrinsically rewarding. Then you’ll get used to this reality, and it’s up to you to push things next-level by taking a risk and finally going in the direction you’ve been dreaming about. July brings an exciting trip. Different moneymaking strategies win in September. Your vitality improves with a shift of habit, though it takes about 60 days to start feeling like the new you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Fear is the enemy that takes many forms. Even runof-the-mill boredom is a form of fear, as it’s indicative of not taking the risk needed to start the adventure. Fight fear with courage. Create courage with desire. Grow desire with a vision. The breakthrough starts with vividly seeing the possibilities with your mind’s eye. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You take the concerns of your loved ones as seriously as you take your own concerns, if not more so, even though in both cases it’s clear that the world won’t end if things don’t go the preferred way. Your diligence and love will be a bonding agent that keeps your group together and in high morale. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). A lot of people will pay (in attention, money, love or other currency) for what they want to hear, whereas far fewer will pay for what they should hear. Don’t let this stop you from delivering what is needed instead of the shallower thing being asked for. Wise choices lead to healing.

Signature Spring Cocktails BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON

S

ejohnson@antonmediagroup.com

pringtime refreshments are blooming just like the flowers and nothing is more refreshing than a signature cocktail whipped up by my favorite bartender Emily from Gatsby’s Landing in Roslyn. Spring is a time to make your taste buds come alive and these five heady concoctions have a decided fresh spring spirit. Rose Watermelon Sangria 4 oz of Notorious Pink Rose Splash of gin Fresh lemon Watermelon slice to garnish

This pink sangria recipe skips the added sugar and uses sparkling pink wine with gin to make a delicious and light refreshing cocktail.

Spring Garden 1 oz lemon vodka Fresh lemon Apple slices Mint

Mojito

Mint leaves ½ lime cut into wedges Raw sugar This cocktail Ice cubes is guaranteed to refresh you 1½ oz at your first sip, hinting at light rum the layers of flavor bursting ½ cup club soda through. Mix ingredients and serve in a tall glass over Compari Nobile ice. Perfect for a hot 1 oz summer day. Limoncello 2 oz Campari Cucumber Jalapeño 1 oz vodka Margarita Muddled ½ cup white tequila raspberry ¼ cup orange liqueur Splash of orange juice ¼ cup simple syrup, or Add ice and place in shaker more as needed 4 thin slices cucumber to mix. Strain ice and serve 1 jalapeño, halved in a martini glass.

lengthwise Ice, for serving Mix together the lime juice, tequila, orange liqueur, simple syrup, cucumber and jalapeños in a large pitcher. Chill for at least one hour allowing flavors to infuse into the drink). Serve over ice in salt-rimmed glasses, if desired. If you like a little kick in your drink, this is the perfect cocktail to sip. Cool and sweet with a spicy finish.

BALL from page 8 his fourth season with the team after back-to-back All-Star seasons. While his numbers last season didn’t top his monster 2017, the outfielder still had a strong batting average and should continue to shine in a loaded lineup. Giancarlo Stanton did not have a strong pinstripe debut in 2018, but 38 home runs is nothing to sneeze at. The four-time All-Star could trend upward in 2019 if he can be more consistent at bat. Infielders Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar will also play a big role in making the team unstoppable. As for the newcomers, pitcher James Paxton will be a key member of the now rejuvenated bullpen. With Luis Severino out for the time being, pitching depth will be a big test, but Paxton’s strong 2018 provides evidence that the Yankees got the right guy to fill a crucial spot in their rotation, led at the moment by Masahiro Tanaka. Shortstop Troy Tulowitski has declined a bit from his time with the Toronto Blue Jays, but the five-time All-Star is sure to be a fine contributor and be a leader in a locker room where most of the players are younger than he is.

Jacob deGrom is now in his sixth season with the New York Mets and will lead the pitching rotation after a strong 2018 performance. (Photo courtesy of New York Mets/Kayla Rice)

DINING High River Sauces delivers a mean, yet flavorful smack to the taste buds. (Photo source: Facebook)

Chili-Heads Unite The NYC Hot Sauce Expo set to burn a hole in Brooklyn BY STEVE MOSCO SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

I

f the chili-heads who douse their food in hot sauce are a unique breed of people, then those who invent hot sauces are an entirely different species. The creators of a vast array of mouth-burning, sweat-inducing, flavor-enhancing condiments welcome lovers of all that is hot and spicy to the seventh annual NYC Hot Sauce Expo at the Brooklyn Expo Center on April 13 and 14. The twoday event will feature tastings of various hot sauces, eating contests on the Stage of Doom, and plenty of beer, along with an atmosphere akin to a heavy metal carnival.

Organizing this gathering of freaky folks is Steve Seabury and his Kings Park-based hot sauce company, High River Sauces. Seabury, who began making hot sauce commercially in 2011, has launched expos in California, Chicago and Portland, along with New York City and the NJ Taco Festival and the Metal Alliance Tour. The music industry veteran has also published the cookbook, Mosh Potatoes, which features 147 recipes from rock legends, such as Joey Belladonna of Anthrax, Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society, Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, and many more. Seabury’s burning desire to concoct hot sauces was born out of necessity—and years of eating bland food while on tour. “When I was in a band traveling and touring I

would bring my own hot sauce because a lot of times we would eat the cheapest food on the road,” he said. “As I was making friends through my travels people were really digging the sauces. I started making sauces for friends for their tours. Finally

Competitors destroy themselves on the Stage of Doom at last year’s expo. (Photo source: Facebook) after many years of people telling me I should sell this stuff I decided, why not. In 2011 High River Sauces was born, and we sold our first bottle of hot sauce on the Metal Alliance Tour in Dallas.” Since then, Seabury’s sauces have become award winning and nationally recognized for their ability to bring the heat while also delivering a unique blend of ingredients that ensures a depth and complexity of flavors. As the hot sauce expert and organizer of the expo, Seabury is a firm believer that the chili-head community is unlike any other group of like-minded individuals—they are bound by heat, a cuisine of conflict and the insatiable need to constantly increase the burn while also showing an appreciation for the culinary merits of a good sauce. “We all share the passion of healthy food, spicy food and beer. Nothing could be better than that,” said Seabury, whose hot sauce expo attracts some of the industry’s most colorful characters. “The hot sauce expo is like going on vacation. Everyone forgets about all of their problems and just has a great time. There is no other place I would rather be that weekend than the New York City Hot Sauce Expo.” Not only is Seabury the organizer, he has also received many accolades for his array of sauces, which includes (but is not limited to) Hellacious, a devilishly addictive robust and bold sauce with habanero and smoked jalapeño; Tears of the Sun, an intense blend of habanero peppers and tropical fruit; Cheeba Gold, a fiery mustard-based sauce with curry, peach and scotch bonnet peppers; and Rogue, which blends the hottest peppers in the world, such as the scorpion pepper, with blood orange, apples and pears.

During the last five years, Seabury’s High River Sauces has won 10 Golden Chile Awards, six Hot Pepper Awards, six Chile Pepper Awards, two Scovie Awards and one Wolfie Award—all first-place finishes. “We have been very lucky when we compete throughout the country,” he said. “We love competing, we love representing the beautiful state of New York, we love the chili-head brethren and, of course, we love winning the bling. It inspires me and it is just a lot of fun.” Besides blazing through awards, High River Sauces has also burned bright in media spotlight. Seabury’s company has had two of his sauces featured on the hot wing challenge/interview YouTube show, Hot Ones, hosted by Sean Evans and presented by First We Feast. The program pits

celebrities up against an increasingly spicy lineup of hot wings while the host guides the guest through well-researched questions about their career. Each season, the show updates its hot sauce array and making it onto the show is a major badge of honor for any proprietor of extreme condiments. And Seabury’s High River Sauces has done it twice: first appearing in season two with Rogue and in the most recent season with Cheeba Gold. Seabury said that getting any of his sauces featured on Hot Ones is like winning the lottery, as it immediately raises his company’s profile in the passionate hot sauce community. “I really love the Hot Ones series. I’ve been a big fan from season one,” he said. “The show has really helped out immensely with raising the profile of High River. We have gained a much larger fan base because of it. It’s such an amazing feeling to be in the same lineup as the other sauce makers on the show.” And this month, the scorching story continues. So whether you like your sauce mildly spicy or straight from the fires of hell, you will be among friends at the New York City Hot Sauce Expo. “At High River, we focus on ingredients that complement the pepper and the food we put it on. I really love the heat and sweat of a hot sauce to elevate the food I am enjoying for a meal,” he said. “I am a medium-heat style person, but at least a couple times a month I want to destroy everything with the hottest stuff I can find. Living life on the edge.” For tickets and more info, check out www.nyc hotsauceexpo.com. For High River Sauces, visit www. highriversauces.com.

he last time Melissa Etheridge was in a recording studio was for the 2016 collection MEmphis Rock and Soul, a collection of Stax-Volt-inspired covers that allowed her to pay homage to a number of different influences including William Bell, The Staples Singers and Otis Redding. The 2016 presidential election and much of what happened in its aftermath proved to be the kind of shock to the system that immediately sent Etheridge into the studio. The end result was the

forthcoming The Medicine Show, the 15th studio album by the Kansas native. “I started thinking about this new album in 2016 when I was sure that we were going to have this great new female president. Where we all went at the end of 2016 really had an effect on me. I realized that now it was about inspiring because this was depressing. And it’s times like this where I know music and art can do so much,” she explained. “I decided to mirror this and use some of these instances [for creative fuel]. So all of 2017, I got some notebooks and started writing things down and picking up pictures and

should follow,” Etheridge recalled. “So I put my mind and heart in that place of a survivor and started doing a little research. There are a lot of people that have died in school shootings, but there are 150,000 people who have survived school shootings. When I start thinking of all those people that have seen this horrific thing and lost their friends, it’s as simple as trying to take this huge issue and place it in the very small fact of someone wishing they could see their friend. So that’s where I came from with ‘The Last Hello.’” And as someone who has been cancer free for 15 years, the role of medicinal marijuana has shaped her worldview regarding wellness and yielded the aforementioned “Here Comes the Pain.” “I understand [marijuana] as medicine and I’ve been an advocate for it for 15 years. I’ve seen our attitudes

APRIL 3 - 9, 2019

towards it change and I’m very happy with where it’s going. I’m in the business—we’re very close to launching Etheridge Farms very soon. It’s a very crazy time here with a lot of regulations and things like that,” she said. “I think cannabis is just a part of an overall new wellness/health paradigm that’s really changing. People are seeing that the opioids being prescribed not only stop pain, but they stop life. People are finally looking for something else, knowing there’s something else. We’re all starting to look to our own bodies and our own responsibility of how to make life vibrant and how to make health a big part of it. Health can be sexy, and that’s where I’m at right now.” Currently set to hit the road, Etheridge will be playing out quite a bit this year, only stopping long enough to pen some songs for an upcoming Broadway production based on the

13

1988 coming-of-age film Mystic Pizza. As someone who loves to play live, the 57-year-old singer-songwriter is always cognizant of making sure her fans come first. “I’ve had 30 wonderful years of putting together the perfect set list. I now have interchangeable songs and a set of hit songs that we do every night and love to do. I am so grateful to start ‘Come To My Window’ and hear everyone singing at the top of their lungs. So every show that you’re going to come see me, you’re going to hear the hits,” she said. “You’re going to hear a couple of deep album tracks and this time out, you’re going to hear a few of the new songs. Then we will watch the new album, see how it sells and keep the songs that they latch on to—the ones they love and the ones that they request. I really, really watch, because it’s about that experience. It’s not about me. I have fun playing whatever, so the more fun the audiences are having, the more fun I’m having. I want a show where people are having a good time.” Melissa Etheridge will be appearing on April 10 at Town Hall, 123 W. 43rd St., NYC. thoughts and putting a notebook of inspiration together. I knew that this next album was going to be about this time because 20 years from now, you’ll be able to look at this album and see that it’s a microcosm of 2018. I have no desire to preach to anybody. But I do want to reach into the hearts and minds of people and really give hope and find a way to inspire through this.” The 11 songs Etheridge recorded throughout 2017 and early 2018 found her certainly pulling from current events to paint a picture of what this country was going through in this current day and age. “The Human Chain” offers hope for healing while “Shaking” finds the heartland rocker addressing the inner turmoil of anxiety. Health and wellness are at the core of the album, be it the psychological or physiological. It gets readily addressed via “Here Comes the Pain,” which focuses on opioid addiction and also in album-closer “The Last Hello,” which was informed by the horrific Parkland School shootings. “I was actually in the studio [when Parkland happened]. It all really depressed me but the next day when I saw those kids—I saw Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg get up and speak—for me, there was the shining light we

ocated at the nexus of Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen, the Vessel at Hudson Yards takes climbing to new heights and with its official opening last month, the Vessel will definitely leave a lasting impression on all who visit. Built as part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, the interactive landmark, unlike most city landmarks, encourages visitors to climb it. Imagined by British designer Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio, the Vessel was made as a focal point where people can enjoy new perspectives of New York City from different heights, angles and vantage points. Standing 150-feet in the air, the Vessel, which is its temporary name for now, was fabricated in Monfalcone, Italy, and arrived on Manhattan’s West Side after almost two weeks at sea with a brief stay at Port Newark and a five-hour barge trip across the Hudson River. The Vessel was constructed from a steel

frame that was covered by a copper-colored steel cladding. The Vessel is composed of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs boasting an impressive count of 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings. The Vessel, which closely resembles a honeycomb shape, rises 16 stories and gives breathtaking views of the nearby Hudson River and High Line. Plus, the Vessel is friendly to all of its visitors since it has ramps and elevators to make it ADA compliant. Directly across from the Vessel is The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards where you can dine at the many new restaurants that recently opened, such as Belcampo, Hudson Yards Grill, Mercado Little Spain, Teak Tearoom, Wild Ink and more. If you have some extra money to burn, you can also stop in to the various stores, such as Banana Republic, Fendi, Coach, Louis Vutton, Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, Madewell, Pandora and others. The Vessel is located at 20 Hudson Yards in Midtown. For tickets, visit www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com.
