Game of Thrones war council from left: Sir Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer), Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) and Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) (Helen Sloan/HBO)

How Kristofer Hivju brought a Viking mindset to the fantasy series By Dave Gil de Rubio dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com

A

t the quarter point of 2019, there’s no question that the upcoming conclusion of the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones (GOT) has been dominating the pop culture landscape, be it traditional or social media. When the series airs its last episode on May 19, fans will be bidding adieu to a slew of beloved characters who have made their way through story lines rife with Shakespearian levels of violence, intrigue and sex that have oftentimes been inspired by real-life historical events. While a number of actors including Jonathan Pryce, Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean were already well-known before landing in GOT, quite a number of cast members have enjoyed breakout success. One of the more notable examples is Kristofer Hivju, who plays Tormund Giantsbane, a leader amongst the

Wildings, a group of indigenous people with no central government, at odds with various lords of the North (think of our real-life Vikings....more on that later). Hivju has quickly become a fan favorite given how profane, funny and unfiltered his Giantsbane character is. Ironically, the Norwegianborn actor wasn’t originally slated to be in GOT and his break came via old-fashioned cyber hearsay. “I was actually auditioning for Vikings. Someone heard that rumor and mixed it up with Game of Thrones because we’re a similar period piece kind of program,” Hivju recalled. “Suddenly, this rumor started to evolve on the Internet. Fans knew that [the character] Tormund Giantsbane was entering the [story line] and the fans thought I was the perfect fit for that role. At that time, the casting director had never mentioned my name. Suddenly, there was a big thing about me and I was at the

chiropractor and someone called to ask me if it was true that I was up for a role with Game of Thrones. I said, ‘No comment’ and it just kept rolling forward. My agent insisted I then send [the GOT casting director] a tape. It actually started with a false rumor.” As someone who grew up in love with the history of Icelandic and Viking kings (the actor has been working on a documentary about the latter he hopes will get released in 2020), GOT was a natural fit for Hivju. And while exposure to the series found the actor and his wife turning the television off after viewing a snippet of the show (“We had small kids and they were sleeping beside us on the couch. After the first 10 minutes, we thought it was too emotionally challenging.”), he fell in love with the show after later watching the first two seasons. Preparation for delving into this epic world that shoots on location in remote parts of Northern Ireland,

Iceland, Croatia and Spain found the 40-year-old reaching out to the series’ rabid fan base for more insight into Giantsbane. In the process, he quickly bonded with his fictional alter ego. “People are so enthusiastic and have so much love and interest for the show. I was very aware of the fan base of the books and the show. So what I did was go through the Internet and started with the fans to find out how they perceive Tormund—what things about him they highlight and how they see him,” Hivju explained. “When I got the audition text, you get the DNA of the scene and the role. It immediately felt right. Some roles are like that. Everything feels right. That’s how we started out. Because of all the rumored stuff before I was cast, I ran around the woods with a stick and went wild for a month or two. I’m up in Norway, so I grew up with the Viking saga and I know how wild

THRONES from page 3A people think. I found it very easy to jump into Tormund’s way of thinking.” Hailing from a family of actors that include both parents and his grandmother, the Oslo native didn’t originally intend to be an actor. While his earliest memories include being at a festival where his father was playing a king before 10,000 attendees while he played a boy in a crowd (“I learned how to steal attention at an early age,”), Hivju originally had his sights set on being a rock singer. That all changed after Hivju was cast as Hamlet in a school play. “When I was cast, I was like, ‘Ugh, please.’ But then when I did it, I realized this was my thing,” Hivju said. “I could do it better than I could do music. So I quit that musical school and went to drama school. I ran up to the principal and changed schools. Then, of course, you have to fight your parents’ shadow. But that gives you drive as well. I chose to get my education at the Russian Academy of Theater Arts in Denmark. It was nice to get away from Norway for a couple of years and then come back.” While GOT has consumed much of Hivju’s time over the past six years, he’s still managed to appear in 13

films (including 2017’s The Fate of the Furious). One of his most notable gigs was being part of a $100 million ad campaign for the Wyndham Hotel Group in which Hivju played the Wyndham Rewards Wizard whose catchphrase was, “You’ve earned this.” It’s an unusual side gig he had a blast diving into. “For me it was a chance to do comedy, because they gave me a lot of freedom and they gave me the opportunity to stay at 8,000 hotels around the world whenever I wanted,” he laughingly said. “They gave me the freedom to do almost whatever I wanted because we created this crazy character. I don’t know how many different commercials I did, but we had a lot of fun with it. It was fun to just do a character that was so crazy. Because people are going to watch those commercials so many times, there has to be a spark, creativity and something fun, otherwise it’s not fun to the people that are going to watch it. It was a very different performance. Many people didn’t know it was the same guy who played Tormund, and that was fun as well.” Game of Thrones airs on HBO on Sunday evenings. hile Kristofer Hivju made his American debut in Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s 2011 prequel of John Carpenter’s The Thing and followed that up with a role in the 2013 M. Night Shyamalan outing After Earth, the Norwegian thespian’s best-known role is as Game of Thrones wild man Tormund Giantsbane. Acting is in his blood, with not only his grandmother, but parents Erik Hivju and Lieselotte Holmene and cousin Isabelle Nanty making their living as thespians. The younger Hivju graduated from the Danish subdivision of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in 2004. The following are some of the bushy-bearded performer’s favorite actors.

Al Pacino (April 25, 1940 to present) “It’s like he’s playing jazz when he acts—you never know what’s coming. It’s kind of out-of-control in an extremely controlled way. It’s like he’s in a groove. I think the reason why many of his movies are so good is that he very often delivers many different things to the editing room. So when they edit the movie, they can choose if he’s going to be charming, cold, warm or an asshole in a particular scene. He delivers a lot of stuff. He has this enormous freedom and lightness.”

Nicole Kidman (June 10, 1967 to present)

“I think she is one of the actors that has this emotional depth that gets deeper and deeper with every role she plays. She’s an extreme presence and makes brilliant choices with every role she is in. Every time you look at her, it tells you how difficult it is to be a human being and I think she has this way of letting go into a role.”

Phillip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 to Feb. 2, 2014) “He had this enormous freedom that made him one of the greatest character actors that ever lived. The thing is that when I think about him, he showed human weakness in a beautiful way. He could be extremely funny and extremely deep and he was able to do it in the same scene. It looked like he didn’t have any limitations. One guy once said an actor should go into suffering like Jesus did so we can join these people on this voyage and we don’t have to live through those feelings in real life. I feel like Phillip Seymour Hoffman went all the way like that with every character. I think he gave a lot.” Al Pacino (Photo by Thomas Schulz/CC BY-SA 2.0) Nicole Kidman (Photo by Georges Biard/CC BY-SA 3.0) Philip Seymour Hoffman (Photo by Georges Biard/CC BY-SA 3.0)

lowers have become known as the hallmark message to convey all of life’s moments. From birthdays and weddings to well wishes and funerals, beautiful bouquets and thoughtful blooms are so much more than a pretty part of a tablescape, thanks to 1-800-Flowers.com and its Local Artisan Collection. As a brand, 1-800-Flowers.com owns nine floral shops in addition to nearly 150 franchise shops across the country and 1-800-Flowers.com | Imperial Florist in Baldwin is one of those co-branded shops. A veteran of the floral industry, Ann Marie Pierce has owned and operated Imperial Florist for nearly 30 years. Her thriving wedding flower business is the result of many enthusiastic customer referrals, and 10 years ago, she partnered with 1-800-Flowers.com to elevate her brand. And to her, being a florist is so much more than sticking flowers in a vase. “Partnering with 1-800-Flowers.com as a co-franchise was one of the best moves I ever made and I love having my designs be part of the Local Artisan Collection,” said Pierce. “We get to work with other designers and get a good feel for what they do and come back with inspiration for our own shop. It was nice to get that kind of exposure as a designer.” The Local Artisan Collection features a curated assortment of truly original arrangements designed and inspired by talented local florists from across the country. According to Alfred Palomares, the Vice President of Merchandising for 1-800-Flowers. com, each unique handcrafted floral arrangement selected for this collection is available exclusively at 1-800-Flowers.com for purchase nationwide. “Exceptional designs from the Local Artisan Collection are chosen at the Local Artisan Design Workshop, which was introduced to provide our florists from across the U.S. with an opportunity to collaborate with our product development and merchandising teams to develop unique product concepts for 1-800-Flowers.com,” said Palomares. “Speaking of, available just in time for Mother’s Day 2019, our collection includes 16 unique bouquets created by 11 florists.” For the new collection, arrangements are reviewed by the Product Development, Merchandising and Marketing teams at the Local Artisan Design

Ann Marie Pierce, owner of Imperial Florist for nearly 30 years, is a cofranchiser with 1-800-Flowers.com. Workshop, and together, they determine the best arrangements based on current trends. “Chosen designs must be truly original and reflect industry trends, as well as changing consumer preferences, based on the florist’s knowledge and experience,” said Palomares, noting that florists must meet specific criteria to be invited to participate. “Flowers can touch the lives of every person who receives them and boost their mood. It’s our opportunity to help people express, connect and celebrate important moments in their lives.” Pierce created the Splendid & Sweet arrangement (All-around arrangement with pink roses, Matsumoto asters and Peruvian lilies (alstroemeria); lime green carnations and greens) and Sunburst Bouquet (Arrangement of sunflowers, green mini hydrangeas, orange Asiatic lilies, orange spray roses, green hypericum, green button poms, bear grass and variegated pittosporum) during the Local Artisan Design Workshop, which were then selected to become a part of the collection, 1-800-Flowers.

com customers loved the design of the Splendid & Sweet arrangement so much that it has sustained as a customer favorite for years and was a result of her designing the bouquet at the Local Artisan Design Workshop. “I love working with other designers and that’s where 1-800-Flowers.com comes in. For the Local Artisan Design Workshop, they supplied a beautiful array of flowers. I was very inspired by color when creating the designs,” said Pierce, noting that the Sunburst Bouquet is available year round as sunflowers seem to be a constant favorite. “For Splendid & Sweet it actually doubles as a candle holder and some of the products now are being shown so they could double for something else after the flowers are gone. That’s a huge trend today too.” Pierce draws inspiration from color palettes, magazines and by walking around her town or the city, peeking into window displays. She describes her style as simple, natural and outside the box. “I think flowers should be used in their natural state and being able to touch people like that in their happiest or their saddest times, just being present in their lives is a very special thing,” said Pierce, who has seen more than a generation of people come through her shop, from baptisms and sweet sixteens to graduations and weddings. “I was so excited to find out that my designs were going to be a part of the Local Artisan Collection and it’s a nice feeling to be recognized for your work.” The beauty of the Local Artisan Design Workshop is to not only meet other designers from around the country, but to bring new ideas back home. For Pierce, she was able to bring inspiration back to her shop just in time for Mother’s Day. “A lot of people will tell us about their moms when making an arrangement and learning about the person is a big part of the business,” said Pierce, who loves working with her customers. “Emotion comes in so much in this business and it’s important to take the time with people. It’s a very personal business.” Visit the Local Artisan Collection page on www. 1800flowers.com where arrangements are available for sale nationwide. DINING

n the storied tradition of dive bars, Long Island has seen more than its fair share. But apart from a few legendary local spots, the majority of our watering holes aren’t particularly noteworthy. And though they all hit the mandatory notes, like flat screen TVs, maybe a pool table, dart boards and plenty of booze—along with a baseline food menu—few establishments that one would label as a true-blue bar stand out for any particular reason. And if that’s your hot take, then you haven’t yet stepped into Elsie Lane, a bar that opened its doors a few months back on Jericho Turnpike in New Hyde Park. Taking over the spot of a seemingly endless list of no-name bars, Elsie Lane is the brainchild of Bill Oxios, Sal Mignano and Ryan Sipp, all of whom possess stellar experience in the Long Island dining and bar scene. And all that time and effort in the business coalesces in a saloon that delivers all the comforts of a low brow bar with key elements elevated to polished heights. Upon entering Elsie Lane, you’re immediately greeted by a long copper-topped bar to your left. The bar itself offers an eclectic selection of inebriaters, proudly serving bottles of Bud Light, while delving deep into the world of microbrews

There are also plenty of ice-cold cans for patrons, with a collection that includes Cigar City Brewing’s Jai Alai, Delirium Tremens from Belgium’s Huyghe Brewery, and Souther Tier’s downright reckless 2XIPA, along with $4 cans of Tecate. If you’re not here for beer, Elsie Lane’s creative cocktails—served in proper glassware—are also worth more than a few sips. The cocktails include the Spicy Smoke Margarita, with Tanteo jalapeño tequila, mescal, simply syrup, and fresh lime juice in a salt-rimmed highball; You’re The Bees Knees, featuring Fords gin, fresh lemon juice, and honey simple syrup served in a coupe; Tangerine And Thyme; with Stolichnaya Ohranj vodka, fresh tangerine juice, and honey thyme simple syrup in a highball; The Mary Pickford, with Bacardi rum,

pineapple grenadine, and maraschinon liquer in a coupe; and finally, the highly recommended Bronx Side Car, a not-so-typical sidecar with 914 Bourbon, Cointreau, and fresh lemon juice served in a sugar-rimmed coupe. There’s also wine, and Instagramworthy shakes that can be served with or without alcohol. Now, onto the food. The menu at Elsie Lane is simple and straightforward, with more than a few surprising twists. The Starters and Shares portion delivers a giant pretzel served with Brooklyn Lager beer cheese and white wine mustard. There’s also deviled eggs, chicken “nugs,” and hummus dip. But large groups of hungry patrons should order the Live Fry Or Die, a metal platter of fries, topped to overflowing proportions with applewood smoked bacon, cheddar and Monterey jack cheeses, pickled jalapeños, green

onions, cognac onions, and roasted garlic sour cream and the bar’s coveted “Elsie sauce,” which conveys the now-classic “fry sauce.” That Elsie sauce makes another appearance, among a choice of five other sauces, as dipping fodder for Elsie Lane’s wings, which the owners take a well-earned amount of pride in. These wings are brined for an entire day, baked, then fried to order. The entire process leaves the wings with a shiny brown exterior, reminiscent

of a perfectly cooked Thanksgiving turkey. But unlike that sometimes dry bird, these wings are packed with juiciness that squirts forth at your first bite. The owners—along with chef Charlie Keller—decided to serve these beauties with the sauce on the side in an effort not to hide that luscious exterior. And while all the sauces are great—including the local Wenzel buffalo sauce—these wings are strong enough to stand on their own merit. Elsie Lane’s burgers are another

source of pride, and are available in six varieties, from the simple construct of the Bob Kelly with mayo and American cheese, to the roundhouse punch of the Big Rich, which features applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, pickles, buttermilk slaw and barbecue sauce. Others include the Uncle D, with pepper jack cheese, triple chili pepper ranch sauce, and more of that smoky bacon and a house-made black bean burger. The burgers here are legit, heavy creations that are guaranteed to soak up the booze but also taste great in the process. An array of chicken sandwiches and salads round out the menu, with different preparations like a spicy offering and one that features a housemade herb buttermilk dressing.

Of course, part of the fun of Elsie Lane is all of the aforementioned elements of that prototypical bar— these include those dart boards, a billiards table, oversized Jenga, a Ghostbusters pinball machine, and a handful of big-screen TVs with local sports teams inspiring everyone to drink more whether in celebration or mired in defeat. And on Wednesday nights, the karaoke microphone works overtime, with future stars and barroom Sinatras belting out songs starting at 9 p.m. Whether your tastes exist in the low or high brow world of bars, Elsie Lane is raising the bar. very parent wants the best for their child when it comes to nutrition, education and a warm and loving home. But what about when it comes to playtime? Cofounded by Jessica Rolph and Rod Morris, Lovevery began on the basis of having playtime with a purpose. The subscription-based service provides parents with everything they need for children’s milestones. “I helped to build a baby food company called Happy Family Organics, and I went deep into infant nutrition and what to feed my baby,” said Rolph. “When I was playing with my son with all of the lights and flashing toys, I wondered what those toys were doing for his developing brain.” That’s when Rolph read a dissertation on the Neurological Development of Infants, a piece of literature that changed her views as a parent. She realized that most of her son’s toys

did not fit into what science said was meaningful for a baby’s development so she started to figure out how to make this information more broadly available for other parents. “Parents want to know what happens with their baby’s development in the important stages of life and I just kept thinking, ‘how could I make this easier and better for parents,’” said Rolph, who partnered with Morris to expand the subscription program that promoted learning development stage by stage. “Parents have to adapt to their child changing every minute. When we buy toys, there are so many age bans on products because of safety warnings, not necessarily the stages of development of a child.” Fortunately, Rolph and Morris found a niche market as subscription boxes are hugely popular. With boxes ranging from food and beauty to pets and clothing, there was a subscription program to suit every need, except babies.

very time there is a terrorist act somewhere in the world, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder will get a phone call, no matter the hour. Lately, the calls have been about shootings or bombings at churches, mosques and synagogues. In light of this targeting of the faithful at worship, the commissioner, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, District Attorney Madeline Singas and members of the county legislature welcomed religious leaders to the ceremonial chamber of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building on May 2 to discuss the safety at places of worship. The briefing was organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council-Long Island (JCRC-LI) with the help of Legislator Arnold Drucker. “We cannot stop it. We know that,” Ryder said of determined shooters. “But we can prepare better. We can train better. We can educate better. We can give you that perception that when you go into your house of worship for prayer, you don’t have to look over your shoulder.” Ryder said his department has worked with many places of worship to help them prepare for active shooter situations. He welcomes any opportunity to speak to and reassure worshipers. The commissioner said that houses of worship can now designate one or two persons to get intensive training to deal with worst case scenarios. “Our job here at the county is very simple. It’s to reassure all of our residents that no matter how you worship, no matter who you worship, we’re doing everything we can to make sure that it is safe to worship in Nassau County,” said Curran. “Our police department has been very responsive and incredibly proactive. We have a very tight plan if God forbid something should happen at one of our houses of worship. It has been well rehearsed and we’ve had

drills. We’ve gone to every school and most of our houses of worship.” She went on to say that the county wants to be as proactive and preventative as possible, adding, “Police are happy to go speak to [houses of worship], drill with them, train with them, educate them. We’re looking very hard to get information out.” Curran said that Ryder immediately lets her know “whenever those horrific acts happen anywhere in the world,” and briefs both her and the legislature on what actions the police department is taking to make sure houses of worship are safe. “I understand the fear,” Curran concluded. “I hear it and want to make sure that we’re doing everything we possibly can so it doesn’t happen here. Our district attorney... takes this very seriously. If something comes to light, it will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It’s a wonderful partnership and we’re really lucky to have such a leader here in Nassau.” In her remarks, Singas observed, “I hope all of you feel confident here in Nassau County that we have professionals at the helm who are making sure we’re doing everything we can to keep our community safe and our residents safe.” She added, “We’ll make sure we do everything we can to hold an offender accountable,” she vowed. “The message has to be clear, and the message has to be strong. In Nassau County, we will not tolerate hate.”

Donna Fish, a licensed clinical social worker, offers parents and kids guidance in how to take the fight out of food. I met Ms. Fish at her workshop that focused on learning how to prevent and solve childhood and teen eating problems. She advised that two questions to ask up front are: What is the problem? and Whose problem is it? These two questions are critical to understanding whether your child’s eating is problematic from a medical/ developmental perspective. If a medical problem has been ruled out, the child is not nutritionally compromised and there are no body image issues the child is experiencing, then there needs to be some better understanding about how their picky eating is affecting dynamics in the family. For example, does it lead to parents

PARENTHOOD PLUS Andrew Malekoff

frequently fighting or to tension on vacations? Basic parent education on nutrition and development go a long way in helping a parent to understand that their child is on a normal growth curve and that how they eat from a nutritional perspective is nothing to be worried about. Consulting with your pediatrician or finding a nutritionist is a good place to begin. If education doesn’t do the trick, then it is helpful to understand a bit more about whose problem it is. This necessitates an understanding about the meaning of food in the family. In many cultures food and feeding represent love, nurturing and bonding. If a child’s picky eating denies a parent

To Mom...With Love

a sense of nurturing it can lead to a battle of wills. In that case, a child quickly learns how their eating represents an ability to take control, which can lead to power struggles in the family. For parents, understanding their own experiences eating when growing up can offer them some insight. For example, if their parents were overly involved with their eating it might suggest some difficulty trusting your own body signals regarding when you’re hungry or full and satiated. If a parent makes this historical connection, it may help them to better understand the value in allowing their child to have more autonomy with eating. For example, they can be allowed to control their own meal portions. For a toddler that might mean putting finger foods on their tray so they can help themselves as opposed to being spoon fed. In her work with children who are struggling with eating, Fish advises “You are the expert on your body. You need to be the best body detective possible. It’s your job, not your parents’ job.” This is important work that helps

the child to separate emotions from feelings of fullness and comfort. Ms. Fish sees “all food as good,” as having some value, and talks to kids about nutrition in a way that generates interest and curiosity. Still, if your child appears to continually make poor choices, it is important that you set reasonable limits. As Fish puts it, “Parents think their job is to protect their child from disappointment, anxiety and hurt,” but it is okay for children to experience the disappointment of your setting limits on occasion. It’s just another of the many areas where parents can help their kids learn a valuable life lesson. To learn more about Donna Fish, visit www.donnafish.com. he Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University and Judge Gail Prudenti, dean, hosted the Law School’s fourth annual Outstanding Women in Law awards on April 22 at RXR Plaza in Uniondale, New York. Fifty-two women attorneys, judges and professors were honored at the awards and dinner reception. The event was attended by more than 400 judges, attorneys, business executives, professors and law students. Over the past four years, Hofstra Law has honored more than 200 women who have made extraordinary contributions to the legal community. “We are proud to recognize such a diverse and accomplished group of outstanding women,” said Judge Prudenti. “They are shining examples of what it means to inspire, to lead and to make an impact. As advocates for the underrepresented, and leaders in the workplace and community, they are also role models and mentors to empower young women aspiring to join the legal profession.” Judge Judy Sheindlin, former Manhattan Family Court Supervising Judge and star of Judge Judy, received the Lifetime Achievement Award and Hofstra University’s Presidential Medal, presented to her by Dr. Herman Berliner, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Hofstra

University. In addition to being a trailblazer, Sheindlin is also a mentor and role model. Along with her daughter Nicole, she founded “Her Honor Mentoring,” an initiative that combines the power of youth and the wisdom of experience to inspire young women to reach their full potential. “It’s thrilling to be surrounded by accomplished women who have found their stride,” said Sheindlin. When asked what advice she would offer young lawyers starting out, Sheindlin said, “be bold, be honest and remember your roots.” In addition to recognizing exceptional women in law, the Outstanding Women in Law event also raises funds for innovative programs at Hofstra Law, including the Center for Children, Families and the Law. The event sponsors were also recognized and included Liberty Maritime, Event Sponsor; US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, Awards Sponsor; and Lewis Johs From left: Krystal Brumfield, president and CEO, Airport Avallone Aviles, LLP, VIP Cocktail Sponsor. early 50 people were in attendance on opening day of the Roosevelt Community Garden on Earth Day. Gardeners, teachers, students, volunteers and North Shore Land Alliance staff members boasted bright smiles and dirty hands as they weeded, cleared, raked and planted more than 50 garden beds there. “We signed up for a garden bed this year so we could be more in control of what we were eating and be more in control of our budget,” said Chris Schilling, a new gardener who was there with his son. “Gardening is also a fun family activity. We’re enjoying picking out the plants for our garden today.” The garden, which is now in its second season, makes its home at 59 Fulton Ave., on a 10,000-square-foot former house lot owned by Nassau County. Some of the plants and herbs available included Georgia collard, red peppers, plum tomatoes, spinach, peppermint, sage and more. Two wooden storage sheds have been added to the garden

A Commitment To Exploration The Sebastian Elcano prepares to set sail

BY ROBERT A. HEMM

editorial@antonmediagroup.com

T

he joint ceremony and meeting held in Boston on Spain’s Training Ship, The Sebastian Elcano, on the weekend of April 26 was an overwhelming success with both “partners” agreeing on future plans to work and help spread exploration worldwide beyond 2019. It all began on the main deck of the Elcano at a Boston pier with all of the officers and crew on deck, along with the representatives of the Explorers Club (EC). Moving to the main mast, preparations took place to raise the flags of the Explorers Club followed by the Flag of Spain. The president of the EC spoke of the club’s honor to join and support Spain’s celebration of 500 Years of Exploration 1519-2019, by the Elcano, one of the largest sailing ships in the world, repeating the voyage of Magellan/Elcano’s first navigation of the world in 1519. Following explorer Richard Wiese’s speech, the Commander of the Elcano, Ignacio Paz Garcia, spoke of Spain’s commitment to exploration by the Crown of Spain along with mutual cooperation. He was followed by addresses from Admiral Ignacio Paz Garcia and then the Ambassador from Spain, Santiago Cabanas. Moving on to the raising of the flags ceremony, the Explorers Club was raised first followed by the Flag of Spain. The Spanish Navy’s anthem followed played by the ship’s band. Before holding a full tour of the ship, Spain introduced the Explorers Club permanent committee formed to work with Spain to celebrate Spain’s 500 Years of Exploration 1519-2019, headed by EC Chair, Robert Hemm, along with Marcelo Mendez, and Kitin Munoz, the

UNESCO ambassador, plus added EC Members, Richard Wiese, president of the EC; Will Roseman, Executive Director; Robert Atwater; Chair of the Flag Committee, and Angela Anton, EC Member, U.S. Press. The joint meetings with Spain could not have been more enjoyable and productive. On the tour, all members including those from the new England Chapter and elsewhere, spent the balance of the afternoon on the ship meeting officers and a crew of cadets. More than 100 people were in conversation about the education of their ship and training. On Saturday evening, a black tie event included more than 200 dignitaries and guests from Boston, who enjoyed wine, food and music. As The Sebastian Elcano leaves Boston to sail back to Cadize, it will

prepare to begin its journey to circumnavigate the world, following the route of the famous Magellan-Elcano expedition in 1519, which began with five ships and a crew of 298. It landed back in Seville, Spain in 1522 with just one ship, The Victoria, and a crew of only 18. With Spain’s commitment, the Explorers Club recognizes and fully supports the contribution and Spain’s inclusion of other nations joining the Crown in celebrating the history of Exploration. Spain’s Celebration will be joined by other nations on a growing basis in July. Follow the Elcano’s historic voyage in the pages of Long Island’s Anton Media Group, and other New York newspapers throughout their voyage. Five Best Healthy Foods To Grill This Summer

W

ith the weather warming up, it’s finally time to dust off the grill. Instead of the boring barbecue staples that are over-processed and loaded with excess saturated fat, try incorporating a few new healthy foods into your grilling repertoire. Choosing more plant-based options can provide more fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Pineapple ‘Buns’

This delicious fruit cooks perfectly on the grill. You can serve it as a dessert with a drizzle of honey and a little whipped cream, but try changing things up and adding a tropical twist to your typical burger. Instead of serving your burger on a bun, opt for a pineapple bun instead. Grill a delicious turkey burger, and top with lettuce, tomato, red onion

end off. Serve grilled asparagus alongside any dish at the barbecue or use to top your burger. Better yet, chop the grilled asparagus and add to any summer salad or ancient grain side dish.

Eggplant

CHOOSING HEALTH Stefani Pappas

and a slice of pepper jack cheese. Serve between two slices of grilled pineapple. The bright flavor adds a delicious tropical twist.

Asparagus

Fire up the grill with this yummy vegetable that is low in calories and high in nutrients. Fiber, folate, vitamin A and vitamin C are just a few of the nutrients abundant in asparagus. Trim the bottom of the spears to keep that tough

Eggplant is another lower-calorie food that is high in fiber and rich in nutrients. Eggplants are simple and grill up very nicely. Slice your eggplant lengthwise to create long pieces. Drizzle with olive oil and pepper, and grill evenly on each side. Serve the eggplant as a side dish, or top with a spread such as salsa, guacamole or hummus.

Portobello Mushrooms

This hearty plant-based option is a great meatless alternative to your typical burger; it’s the steak of veggie

burgers. Large Portobello mushrooms are truly the perfect burger material. Marinate them well and fire up the grill. Serve as you would a traditional burger and don’t forget yummy toppings.

Foil Packs

Foil packs on the grill are easy for prep, simple to cook and require virtually no clean-up. Plus, the flavors get to really infuse nicely together inside the foil-pack. Fish, especially salmon and shrimp, always cooks very nicely in a foil pack on the grill. Browse the Internet for different foil-pack recipes to grill up

this season. Make an effort this year to highlight vegetables as the star of the show and try to limit your red and processed meat consumption by opting for lean proteins, such as fish, for heart-healthy benefits. Stefani Pappas, MS, RDN, CSO, CDN, CPT, is a Clinical Dietitian and Certified Personal Trainer. She also provides private nutrition counseling at her office in Great Neck. CBD And Your Liver The legalization of recreational marijuana in many states and the widespread use of cannabidiol (CBD) brings up many possible questions and concerns regarding the use of these substances in people with and without liver disease. First, let’s define these substances. Marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and THC has a psychoactive effect. CBD, which is more widely sold in stores, does not any have psychoactive effects. The use of marijuana and liver disease is not well studied. As marijuana stimulates the CB1 receptors, which increases fibrosis and also stimulates CB2 receptors, which decrease fibrosis, the overall effect on hepatic fibrosis is unknown. There have been studies, however, that do show an increase in hepatic fibrosis in patients with hepatitis C, so the use of marijuana in patients with hepatitis C is

there is a concern regarding interference with anti-rejection drug metabolism such as tacrolimus, which may lead to higher and potentially harmful levels of these medications. The greater unknown is the effect of CBD on people without liver disease. Cannabidiol can be delivered orally, transdermal or inhaled. In general, CBD, whether delivered either orally, transdermally or via inhalation, appears to be safe for the liver. The main concern is not liver toxicity, but interference with drug metabolism. To date, CBD, by inhibiting some of the main enzymes within the liver, which metabolize medications, has been shown to increase the levels of certain blood thinners such as coumadin, certain anti-depressants and some cholesterol lowering agents such as statins. Elevated levels of these medications, due to these higher levels, can cause liver injury. So how should a medical professional respond to the

patient question, “Is it safe for my liver for me to use either marijuana or CBD, in any form?” The most responsible answer from your health care provider is: “We just do not have all the data yet and research is ongoing. Many of the CBD products may be helpful for a variety of medical conditions. However, these substances should be used with caution especially if you already suffer from liver disease or take any other medications. It is important to make sure that whatever product you use is pure and does not contain any contaminants. And never, never believe all the claims made on the Internet.”

Four Simple Hacks To Beat Seasonal Allergies

free AccuWeather app for iOS and Android. Stay in-the-know by frequently checking the app, which is also a good source of other weather-related tips, educational resources and information.

llergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. and more than 50 million Americans suffer from them each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When it comes to spring allergies, you don’t need to anticipate the season with dread. However, there are steps you can take to proactively dodge allergens and mitigate debilitating symptoms, according to the experts at AccuWeather.

Protect indoor air

Fresh air may sound appealing, but opening your car and home’s windows is a fast-track to a high pollen count indoors. For a breeze, stick to air conditioning, as fans can kick up dust and pollen into the air.

Change your routine

Are you a morning bather? Experts say that if you suffer from outdoor allergies, you would be wise to switch to evening showers. This will rid your hair and skin of pollen, so you don’t bring it to bed with you. No matter what time of day you shampoo and scrub, you’ll want to wash your linens in hot water, to remove as much pollen as possible.

Consider your wardrobe

Stay in-the-know

From dry winds blowing tree pollen into the air, to wet, rainy days causing dust mites and mold to thrive, weather has a huge impact on the spread of allergens and, subsequently, the way you feel, say experts. “Spring allergies are driven by trees and grass pollen, and different people will have their own reactions. If you do suffer from spring allergens, a cold front passing through can bring some relief,” said Alan Reppert, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. “But even when the weather seems quiet, allergens can be present and contribute to illness. For example, when

Many spring allergies are driven by pollen. rain begins and washes pollen out of the air, mold spores can climb and cause allergy problems.” Get relevant information about weather and allergies in the palm of your hand so you can avoid the worst of it, or make necessary preparations when you can’t. One useful tool is AccuWeather’s daily allergy index, which is available on AccuWeather.com and on the

For those times when you must be out and about on high-pollen count days, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself. A scarf or mask over your mouth and nose can be useful when symptoms are severe. When you get home, be sure to remove outerwear, including shoes, in your mud room or foyer so you don’t track allergens throughout the house, particularly in areas where you sleep and spend the most time. You can make smart decisions about your wardrobe as well as the best time to venture outdoors by consulting digital apps like AccuWeather before leaving the house. This spring, don’t let sniffles, sneezing and wheezing get the best of you. For a more comfortable season, check the weather often and take proper precautions. —Courtesy of StatePoint Media Inc.

Russia Is A Challenge, China Is A Bigger Deal W

e are very busy people trying to make it through the day, but it’s worth taking a few minutes to think about China and what it is going on in their end of the world. The distance to China from New York is estimated to be 6,840 miles, but if their plans for domination work, they will be sitting on our doorstep rivaling us in any area of our economy that you can think of. Look at a map of the world and if you shine a laser light, China is already there in some form. Let’s start with Africa, a country that President Trump has vilified as being backward and substandard. According to Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, Commander of the U.S. Africa Command, China is quickly learning how to best invest in mineral extraction operations and build railroads that will haul those products to the coasts for export.

INSIDE POLITICS Jerry Kremer

Waldhauser said “China has read our playbook” and replicates what has helped the U.S. succeed in Africa and improved upon it. Port after port is being rebuilt with Chinese dollars and they are gaining enormous influence throughout that nation. Mineral extraction makes both China and local governments rich and also increases their political clout. And with the help of Russia they are winning new friends

each and every day. The story is the same in Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe. China is buying port after port in countries ranging from Italy to India, which gives them exclusive locations for their ships to transport goods. Have you ever heard of the Silk Road? The history books tell us that it is the historic trade route that enabled China to once have merchant contact with the West. Today’s New Silk Road project is aimed at striking up economic and cultural partnerships with other countries. China’s goal is to do up to $2.5 trillion in cross-border trade within the next 10 years. At this very moment, China is investing billions in steel manufacturing and heavy equipment, which helps it gain a foothold in any countries that don’t have those industries. At the same time, it is

pouring billions into new technology with the goal of outpacing U.S. in the near future. While Russia has been attempting to undermine America’s stability by spying and hacking into our systems, the Chinese are becoming the bigger long term threat to our world dominance with sophisticated planning and political smarts. At the same time as we are debating such subjects as the Mueller report, Medicare for All and free college tuition, it is worth asking our politicians how do they intend to keep pace with China in the coming years? Former State Assemblyman Jerry Kremer is a columnist for Long Island Weekly and partner at Ruskin Moscou Faltischek in Uniondale. The views expressed are not necessarily those of the publisher or Anton Media Group.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Who’s to say when thinking becomes overthinking? Past the surface, commonly accepted levels, beyond the level of detail and particulars, and then through the realm of the uncomfortable and absurd, there’s a place where the best ideas live. The ticket for this journey: curiosity, imagination and courage. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Your wish list fills up this week. Can you afford it all? Just remember, ideas are more valuable than dollars. Creativity is its own kind of blank check. Imagination is the elevator that launches ordinary humdrum experience into the excitement and expansive view at the sky-high level of life. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Disagreement creates a trench to keep the unwanted out of your mental and emotional territory. It’s good for some situations, but not for personal relationships, as the chasm keeps the whole person away, not just the part with which you don’t agree. Consider coming to an understanding. Could you agree to disagree? CANCER (June 22-July 22). Acquaintances often treat one another better than people who are very close. Familiarity wears down the varnish of manners and public persona. That’s why the best relationships include extra efforts toward tenderness and affection to counteract the natural emotional erosion. Think: sunscreen for the soul. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The ocean is the drop, and the drop is the ocean. You have at least a little bit of what you need but you need more of it in order to fulfill your vision. So this is about growing what you have instead of questing for something new. Success is a matter of scale. What are the conditions that will nurture your growth? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Instead of looking for love, you’re loving what’s in and around you. Instead of wondering what’s next, you’re seeing what’s now. This week shows you engaged in your surroundings and in the lives of the people you happen to find yourself among. This week features very little planning and a lot of spontaneous fun. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’re growing tired of hearing complaints and will avoid discourse dominated by negativity. That’s not to say you’re totally free of the behavior yourself. While focused on the positive, you do see what needs improvement. You’ll put time into untying knots, greasing wheels and smoothing the way. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Regardless of how much you enjoy social interaction, it uses energy. Talking, listening, reacting, processing... it’s an expenditure. After three hours, even a seasoned extrovert grows tired. You’ve much to accomplish on your own this week, so you’ll pace the social activities accordingly. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). For everything you do, from taking a trip to making a simple phone call, you like to be prepared. Your confidence level depends on how well you’ve set yourself up with the right sort of supplies and options, even if those “options” are just conversation starters or a good way of telling your side of the story.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Your secret power is the power of listening. You’ll do it so well, you’ll hear what people are saying, what they mean, what they are not saying, and even what they are hiding or compensating for. There is no better advantage than the one you get from the depth of knowledge that comes of excellent listening. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Because you sense and empathize with the feelings others, you need to take extra care to understand the boundaries of your responsibility. To distinguish your problem from theirs, take a step back for an objective view. Remind yourself that each person is responsible for his or her own happiness. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Interruptions abound, many of which can’t be helped. But if you find yourself being interrupted by the same person more than once, kindly bring attention to it. This person probably isn’t even aware of the unintentional disrespect implied by his or her actions. Enforcing your own standards is always a winning move.

CONTRACT BRIDGE

THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

You’re a warm presence and a giver, qualities you wouldn’t trade even though at times they’ve brought you unwanted complications. This year, your gifts are appreciated and lauded. Your vision for yourself gets vivid over the next six weeks and will include some beautiful goals you were too modest to go for in the past. The new people you attract will have surprising ways of supporting you. Someone from another generation will bring good financial juju, and you’ll learn a lot, too. COPYRIGHT 2019 CREATORS.COM

Lovevery enables little ones to have fun while stimulating their developing brains.

PLAYTIME from page 10A doesn’t come with a manual, being a parent doesn’t come with one either.” As for the research, Rolph, Morris and the Lovevery team (along with a team of medical and professional experts on board), calculated babies’ developmental windows. And while every child is different, they are practicing and learning the same motor skills and brain functions around the same time. Passionate about climate change and understanding the importance of using as many natural products as possible, Rolph ensured that all of the wooden products were sustainably harvested, that water-based paint was nontoxic and that all of the cotton fabrics were organic. Each play kit is also

compact and easy to take on the go. “We work hard to make our products as portable as possible and look at possible color effects on mood,” said Rolph of the play kits, which start from birth and currently go up to the age

of 2, however, many of the products and toys extend beyond the various development windows. Parents will receive a play kit every other month for the first year of their child’s life and then every three

months for the second year, as people have come to realize how important the toddler years are as well. When it comes to the play kits, a world of fun awaits inside. Children will learn through play with the Looker play kit (for weeks 0 through 12 when babies learn how to track movement and develop their vision), The Charmer play kit (for months 3 and 4 when coordinating their senses comes into play), The Explorer play kit (for months 9 and 10 when babies build their intelligence through the way items can be built and how they move) and several other kits paired with development. There are 10 play kits in total for babies and toddlers as well as a play gym that was rated as the best-selling play gym on Amazon. “Lovevery helps to create a confident parent and it is that gift of confidence that you are doing everything you can for your child’s development, that’s what we give,” said Rolph, who uses Instagram and email as an educational platform for parents. “We take the wondering and the research out of it and allow parents to really enjoy being connected to their child.” Sign up for your subscription box at www.lovevery.com and follow @ lovevery on social media.

f it seems like Whitesnake is ever-present nowadays, that may have to do with a pop culture resurgence they’re experiencing via the use of the band’s 1987 chart-topper “Here I Go Again,” which has been featured prominently in a current Geico ad campaign. The band itself has stayed pretty active, readying the release of its forthcoming album Flesh & Blood on May 10. Founded in 1978 by vocalist David Coverdale after his stint singing for Deep Purple ended in 1976, the group has enjoyed a steady run of success dotted by numerous hiatuses and an army of members that have filtered through its ranks. The band’s current line-up is rounded out by guitarists Reb Beach (Winger) and Joel Hoekstra (Trans-Siberian Orchestra), bassist Michael Devin, veteran drummer Tommy Aldridge (Ozzy Osbourne) and keyboardist Michele Luppi. Hailing from the English working-class community of Yorkshire,

M

his nearly five decades in the music industry, he’s thrilled at the current combination of players that currently make up Whitesnake. “Working with Reb and Joel is the first time I haven’t had to be a referee,” Coverdale said with a laugh. “It’s just so [effing] distracting and a pain in the ass. This album features songs that Reb and I wrote that Joel does the solos on. There are songs that Joel and I wrote that Reb does the solos on. It remains unsaid with these guys—it’s just who they are.” As for the forthcoming Flesh & Blood, the band’s first new album of original material since 2011’s Forevermore, there’s plenty for longtime fans to sink their teeth into. “Good to See You Again” is a gnarly opener infused with biting slide guitar and is a nod back to early Whitesnake and its ’70s-era Faces-like sound. Latter-day Whitesnake devotees will be sated by the combination of big riffs and choruses that define “Hey You (You Make Me Rock)” while “Heart of Stone” is the quintessential Whitesnake power ballad that perfectly balances extreme sonic dynamics, just the right amount of soloing and Coverdale’s simmering vocal phrasing. While folks can expect more of that when the band hits the stage, the band will also be paying tribute to the 35th anniversary of

Coverdales’s self-proclaimed “romantic concept album” Slide It In, the band’s 1984 breakthrough album that set the table for the explosive success of Whitesnake three years later. “Fans can expect us to feature favorites from [Slide It In],” Coverdale explained. “Obviously, 50 to 60 percent of a Whitesnake show is taken up by the immense hits of ‘Here I Go Again,’ ‘Is This Love’ and ‘Still of the Night.’ But this is the first time that my band has written and performed all new songs. So I’m hoping we can get five of the new songs, but in terms of time, I think I’ll be very lucky to get four. Some of them are very short and sweet, but others are epics.” At the age of 67, Coverdale shows no signs of slowing down, despite attempting to bow out a number of times dating back to the ’90s. (“I’ve tried to retire more times than Francis Albert Sinatra.”) When the Frontiers record label came knocking, his body was breaking down. Degenerative arthritis in both knees over a decade caught up with the vocalist to the point where he was using shots to deal with the bone-on-bone pain he was experiencing. The year 2017 was spent replacing both joints in separate operations and enduring the subsequent physical therapy and recovery. Two years later, Coverdale has a clean bill of health and is raring to take Whitesnake to the masses. “I have absolute trust in my band. It’s been a [thrill] experiencing them presenting music as only they can, as individuals and as a collective,” Coverdale said. “My job is to work the crowd—get them motivated and involved. But the circumstances when you’re out of the zone is when pain becomes a huge distraction. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case.” Whitesnake will be appearing on May 8 at the Paramount, 370 New York Ave., Huntington. Visit www. theparamountny.com or call 631673-7300 for more information. Cooking Up Classics By TaRyN SCHoFielD

editorial@antonmediagroup.com

C Chef Jet Tila with his wife, Ali.

ulinary power couple Jet and Ali Tila have come together to pass on their know-how expertise in their new cookbook 101 EPIC DISHES: Recipes that Teach You How to Make the Classics Even More Delicious. They have carefully selected the most essential recipes that pull double duty by tasting delicious and teaching readers foundational cooking skills that will easily transfer to other cooking endeavors. “Food brought us together,” said Jet. “We met when I was teaching cooking classes over a decade ago and haven’t stopped cooking together since. We are cooks and educators and this book brings those two passions together.” Jet is a celebrity chef/TV personality

and the author of 101 Asian Dishes You Need to Cook Before You Die. He has appeared as a cohost on Iron Chef America, as a judge on Cutthroat Kitchen and on Today, Chopped and Beat Bobby Flay. Ali brings 15 years of pastry and teaching experience. She has appeared on Guy’s Grocery Games and Cutthroat Kitchen. “We’ve been cooking on social media for years and fans asked for a book,” said Jet. “These 101 of our favorite family recipes are good for all meals from breakfast, lunch, main courses and desserts. Each recipe comes with a cooking tip and chef tip.” For Jet and Ali, writing a cookbook together was just another great opportunity for them to combine their skills and enjoy yet another experience that comes with their partnership.

“We work really well together, we have complementary skill sets,” said Ali. “Jet is great at the big picture vision and I’m more detail-oriented. Writing a cookbook is a challenge for sure, but I feel so fortunate to be able to do what I’m passionate about with my best friend. It’s a win-win for me.” An important element to the cookbook is its ability to teach readers basic cooking skills that can be translated further into other cooking challenges. For many, cooking quality dishes seems like a daunting and challenging task, and the goal of the book and the skills involved in the recipes is to show readers that it may not be

as difficult as they think. Building a foundation is the key. “Being educators and cooks, we wanted to take a scaffolding approach,” explained Jet. “Start with easy dishes and teach fundamentals like knife skills or vinaigrettes. Then you can apply those skills to salads. Then you can roast some vegetables and move on to proteins like roast chicken. If you can roast a chicken, then you can have the confidence to roast a prime rib. Prime rib leads to braising short ribs…We can take a new cook and help them become very proficient.” When it comes to their favorites, some of the first recipes that come to mind for Jet are the “perfect” prime rib, the duck breast, and sides like the fingerling potato salad and roasted Brussels sprouts. For Ali, it’s all about the brown butter chocolate chip cookies, the churros and the coconut chia pudding. “These are all dishes that are staples in our house,” said Ali. “They are guaranteed to work and be delicious.” 101 EPIC DISHES: Recipes that Teach You How to Make the Classics Even More Delicious is now available via Page Street Publishing Co. for $21.99.

OUTDOORS

May Magnificence At Old Westbury Gardens

W

hen you’re on the grounds of Old Westbury Gardens, it’s hard to believe you’re still on Long Island. Walking through the many acres of formal and informal landscaped gardens, open fields and quiet woodlands, it feels as though you are on an English country estate, upon which the estate was designed to reflect. Westbury House, the former country house of John and Margarita Phipps, will have limited access while the slate roof and terracotta cornice are restored. The project is expected to be completed in December. May is a lovely time to visit—tulips are in bloom and everything is newly green. The schedule of events is also in full swing with outdoor programs and family activities. See what’s in store at Old Westbury Gardens this month.

Tai Chi Wednesdays, May 1 through Oct. 30 • 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Instructor Linda Cafiero teaches this unique form of “moving meditation,”

which calms the mind, relaxes the body and strengthens the spirit. Classes are designed for all experience levels. $18/session (includes admission); $8 for members.

Yoga in the Gardens Thursdays and Saturdays, May 2 through Oct. 31 • 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Professional Kripalu Yoga instructor, Lorili Henry, leads students through a dynamic, yet gentle, flow of postures and conscious breathings. Participants must bring a yoga mat, yoga strap and towel. $18/session (includes admission); $8 for members.

Kids Mother’s Day Floral Workshop Saturday, May 11 • 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Create an arrangement that Mom, Grandma or any special lady will be happy to display. Class size is limited so register in advance for either

session. $15 includes materials and one adult admission; $12 for members. For ages 6-10.

Mother’s Day Sunday, May 12 Honor Mom on her special day with a visit to the Gardens. All women, 18 and older, will receive a complimentary lavender plant (while supplies last).

Billy Goats & Brews Friday, May 17 • 7 to 8:30 p.m. Meet and greet goats, taste fresh cheese and learn the basics of dairy farming from Riverhead’s Goodale Farms. Then sample seasonal and year-round beers from Oyster Bay Brewing Company as sourced by Hicksville Beer & Soda. Ages 21 and over only. $30 per person; $27 for members. Includes bar snacks and beer flight. Advance tickets required.

Early Bird Walk Saturday, May 18 • 9 a.m. Celebrate International Migratory

Bird Month with a walk guided by an educator from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center. Bring binoculars. Suitable for all ages.

Flowering Trees and Shrubs Talk and Tour Sunday, May 19 • 2 p.m. Enjoy a walk to one of the Gardens’ often overlooked natural areas—the Temple of Love—and view Westbury House from across East Lake. Return to the South Lawn with the opportunity to walk to the Cottage Garden and Walled Garden.

Meet Daniel Zamora: The Seawolf Who Became A Met By JoSePH WolKiN

aniel Zamora is all smiles when he walks onto Citi Field’s bright green grass. On this day, he wants to work on his slider. The goal? Get it to slow down when it reaches the plate. It’s easier said than done. He’s chatting with his peers, attempting to figure out what he can do to stand out. “I can go all day and flip sliders,” Zamora, who made his MLB debut last August, said. “I can flip sliders whenever I want. But making my fastball better makes my slider better. I think that will help in the long run and everything will be much better if I can get my fastball command built up.” But Zamora can’t ask for much more. To start his major league career, the New York Mets relief pitcher has battled against some of baseball’s most premier players, including Bryce Harper, fresh off signing a historic 13-year, $330 million contract. That wasn’t a big deal, though, to Zamora. Through the four duels they’ve had against each other, Harper had to walk back to the dugout in defeat. That’s because this young southpaw left him in awe. Most recently, the two met on April 24, as Zamora made his season debut for the Mets, striking out Harper in five pitches. “Eh, it’s my job,” Zamora said with plenty of confidence. “He’s good. But at the same time, I’m good, too. That’s how I look at it.” Zamora started out the year with the Mets Triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Mets. He pitched in five games before Mets skipper Mickey Callaway opted to re-call Zamora to the majors. But what makes Zamora different compared to the others Mets players is his background. He’s no stranger to Flushing, Queens, and certainly not Long Island, either. That’s because Zamora spent

his college years playing Division I ball at Stony Brook University. Zamora grew up in California, but didn’t have many opportunities to play for a top-tier college team. But a connection between his high school baseball coach and then-Stony Brook pitching coach Mike Marron helped lead him on an amazing journey. “We had a great group of guys,” Zamora said. “The bond we had was awesome. I talk to a lot of them still today. The coaching staff was great. I loved everything about what coach [Matt] Senk and Marron had to offer. I couldn’t ask for a better education. It’s an awesome school to go to educationally and athletically.” Zamora has visited Stony Brook once since joining the National League club. Of course, he can’t forget some of his top places to hang out during his college years. “The Bench was always a place I could enjoy,” he joked. “Down Port [Jefferson] was always a place to enjoy yourself. There’s good food out there.” As time went on, Zamora entered the MLB Draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Zamora in the 40th round during the 2015 draft. But the organization wasn’t moving him through the rankings as he hoped. Come Jan. 31, 2018, the Pirates traded him to the Mets. It was the move he needed in order to

show he can succeed. “With the Pirates, I was just different to what they typically go with,” he said. “When I was traded, it was like, ‘This team wants me here.’” Within less than a year of being traded to the Mets, Zamora was called up to the majors. He became the first Seawolf to adorn the orange and blue uniform in Flushing. “It was a very proud day for all of us at Stony Brook when Daniel was called up to the Mets last year,” Stony Brook University Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron said. “His journey from Stony Brook to the major leagues proves that anything is possible through hard work and dedication. Daniel has remained close to our program and it is an added bonus to have him in New York.” Now, Zamora is living the life as a major leaguer. He no longer has to worry about the torturous bus rides in the middle of the night. All he needs to do is focus on doing his job to make sure he doesn’t get sent back to Syracuse. Striking out Harper and several others is certainly a way to do just that. “When the phone rings and your name is called, it’s the most exciting thing ever,” Zamora said. “There’s a huge rush of adrenaline that comes in. You just want to get in there and have a chance to come in there to help the team.” JOY DIDONATO Director of Circulation LINDA BACCOLI Director of Business Administration
