Chicago Transit Authority circa 1969
Chicago’s Long And Winding Road By Dave Gil de Rubio dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com
T
here are many sides to a band like Chicago—a self-described “rock and roll band with horns,” a steady presence on MTV during the early to mid-1980s and an outfit capable of churning out ballads that often find their way into wedding vows and prom themes (I have personally experienced the latter). And while the identity of this group can be debated, the one indisputable fact is that this outfit has enjoyed an unbroken string of longevity that not only dates to its 1967 founding, but the release of its 1969 debut Chicago Transit Authority. Fast forward five
decades and Chicago has amassed an impressive canon; in addition to carving out a respected live show that’s come out of a combination of an unparalleled work ethic and relentless time on the road, Chicago has sold more than 100 million records worldwide while amassing 47 gold and platinum records, along with 70 charting songs. Driven by the four founding members—Robert Lamm (keyboards, vocals), Lee Loughnane (trumpet, vocals), James Pankow (trombone) and Walt Parazaider (woodwinds)—the band has toured and not missed a year of playing live since the beginning. And while health concerns have found Parazaider coming off the road and having his role filled by saxophonist
Ray Hermann, the band has soldiered on—currently on tour and working on new material while on the road. While the band’s last tour focused on recreating 1970s critically and commercially successful sophomore bow Chicago II, the current road jaunt is centered on giving the people what they want. “This year, we’re out performing with a 10-man line-up and we’re calling this tour, ‘Chicago and Their Hits,’ which is a bit of a misnomer because we’re not just doing hits. We’re doing songs that we want to do,” Lamm said. “There’s very little in the Chicago repertoire that’s performable on a night-to-night basis that most people are not familiar with. So that’s what people will be hearing when they
come to Westbury.” Given the band’s long and illustrious history, Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago could not have been released at a better time. The award-winning documentary, released around the time the band was receiving its 2016 induction into the Rock & Roll of Fame, perfectly chronicled the ups and downs of this wildly successful group. For Lamm, the organic way it came about was what helped define the end result. “The director/cameraman was Peter Pardini, a then-recent graduate of the UCLA Film School at the time. He happens to be the nephew of Lou Pardini, our other keyboardist and

ROAD from page 3A vocalist. Peter traveled with us quite a bit,” Lamm explained. “For a band this late in their career, we were still doing very interesting projects and returning to Europe after being away for 25 years, along with touring through Asia, along with a number of other things. Peter was always around with a camera. Because he was sort of family, we were very comfortable with him being around. Every once in awhile, he’d ask to interview us in a way where he’d be off camera. That was a very comfortable situation and after a short while, we became much less self-aware and were very relaxed.” Chock full of vintage footage balanced by more contemporary interview segments, Now More Than Ever not only captured the band’s commercial triumphs, but shone a light on the brilliance of late guitarist and founding member Terry Kath. It also addressed the fissures in the band in the post-Kath era that included a number of personnel changes, most notably that of vocalist/bassist Peter Cetera, who declined to be interviewed for the film. And while the three years before Cetera’s departure coincided with Chicago getting dropped by CBS, getting picked up

hits, less emphasis was placed on the band’s horn-driven sound and the group wound up becoming known for its power ballads. The friction that came out of this kind of success is something Lamm has a considerably different perspective about decades later. “Hindsight is a great view, because somehow we lived through that. But, I also have come to learn from that experience. I really feel that David did what he was hired to do, which was almost impossible because he was taking a band that had been very successful—internationally. But we were down for the count, as far as our career was concerned, for a number of reasons,” the Brooklyn native said. “But, he did what he had to do and he did it the way a good producer does it. He makes the decisions. He gets the music written and produced. He gets the music performed and if he has to bring in a session player, he does that because time is of the essence. And time was of the essence. I think everything he did, he did right. Personality-wise has nothing to do with it, because it was really about getting the music done and getting it done to sound as great as he could get it. He did what he was supposed to do. I was really troubled going through it. But now I look at it and think that it didn’t kill me and it all worked out okay. I have nothing but respect for David.” While Lamm’s view of Chicago’s 2016 induction into the Rock & Roll
Hall of Fame provided quite a bit of self satisfaction (“I felt vindicated for the band. I was very happy for the band. But none of that compared to how much fun it was to actually be in Brooklyn rehearsing and meeting some of the other inductees”), Cetera’s decision to not show up alongside the band was a bit puzzling to Lamm. “I’ve talked to Peter off and on and met with him over the years. I didn’t realize how intensely he felt that he could never, for any reason, stand or play with the band again—except on his terms,” Lamm said. “I just didn’t understand that. I don’t dislike the guy or anything like that. I think he’s a good and nice man. He’s a great bass player and no one can argue with the beauty of his voice and singing. But I didn’t understand and don’t understand the intensity of his feelings. But I’m not at liberty to say what he told me.” As for Chicago’s longevity. Lamm’s feeling is that it comes down to the basics. “I credit the songs and the music. Obviously, the sound of the band is appealing to a lot of people. The way the horns are used is very different than what other bands do. The idiosyncrasies of the way [they sound]—and believe me, I really had a chance to consider that when we did Chicago II. Those aren’t even songs—those are compositions,” he said. “Who knows why ‘Saturday in the Park’ is so popular? I think that when I was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, I was of course asked to do something from Chicago, which I did. I think I performed ‘Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?’ and I rehearsed with a New York session band, which was the back-up group. Even those guys said, ‘It’s a great song man.’” Chicago will be appearing on June 17 & 18 at NYCB Theatre at Westbury, 960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury. LIVE MUSIC
Jack Johnson during his June 14, 2017, performance at Forest Hills Stadium
Forest Hills Stadium: Live Magic By Dave Gil De RuBio dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com
T
his year marks Forest Hills Stadium’s 96th year of existence. And while its origins date back to 1923, when it was constructed with the express intent of becoming one of the cathedrals of tennis (thanks to its role as the original home of the U.S. Open and Davis Cup), it has enjoyed a recent resurrection as a beloved outdoor music venue. Since Madison House Presents music promoter/booking agent Mike Luba and his partners got things back on track by bringing in national acts, starting with a 2013 Mumford and Sons concert, the old girl has become somewhat of a summer rite of passage for both touring performers and fans. The lineup this year is no less impressive as fans will get a chance to catch a wide range of performers including Sarah McLachlan with the New York Philharmonic, The Chemical Brothers, Beck, “Weird Al” Yankovic, YouTube personality JoJo Siwa, Fitz & the Tantrums and Willie Nelson. Luba is rightfully proud of the slate of concerts he’s booked for
the upcoming season. “We’re really psyched because we have two of our favorite bands returning that headlined last year and sold out on their own and are back to support their heroes like Interpol with Morrissey and Nathaniel Rateliff with Willie [Nelson],” he said. “Elvis Costello is going to be back almost 35 years to the day with Blondie. So that feels like the most New York show of all time that we could ever book. It’s doing great, so we’re super-psyched for that.” The venue’s success came through a lot of necessary hard work including upgrading the stadium, while also handling the delicate complexities that come with hosting live music in the middle of an upscale, residential neighborhood. Most crucial was getting residents to feel like their concerns were being heard, such as noise issues, which Luba addressed a couple of years ago when he professionally sound-proofed stairwells, which had previously been a source of major decibels leaking out. The plan was to hopefully have locals embrace the facility as being part of the community.
It’s a goal Luba feels he and his crew have achieved. “We just had our annual meeting with the Forest Hills Garden and community board folks. Five years ago they were borderline hysterical and this everyone, from the police and fire department to [numerous residents], were happy with things,” he explained. “There’s a core group of people that have seen at least one show here, so it’s not completely virgin territory, so I think that helps everything run a little bit smoother. We spend a lot of time listening and we literally take every comment and every bit of feedback we get for real and treat it seriously.” Luba admits the artist wish-list has decreased with every passing year, among the artists he’s still targeting are Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel and Paul McCartney (“We do a dance with [him] every year. We’re hopeful that one time it will make sense”). Not unlike the artists who return to play here, and the loyal fans who keep coming here to immerse themselves in the symbiotic relationship that comes out of the best live music experiences, Luba feels the
quirkiness of Forest Hills Stadium is what makes it such a unique place to catch a show. “There’s really not a bad space in the house. We’ll sell as many tickets as you’d sell at Madison Square Garden or Barclays. But the distance from the last seat at the top to the downstage edges is half the distance. So it’s super intimate and feels like it’s half the size of what it really is. I think it creates mega energy that bands feed off of and the fans feed off what the bands are feeling,” he said. “Because it’s a horseshoe, people on the ends of it are not only looking at the stage, they’re looking at each other. You can actually see the rest of the room, whereas in a lot of places, it feels like a big, amorphous blob. This feels like a very communal, we’re-all-in-this-together vibe.” The Forest Hills Stadium 2019 season kicks off on Saturday, May 25, with Greta Van Fleet and Ida Mae. PROFILE
Hot Sardines: Speakeasy Serenaders BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com
T
he legendary Herbie Hancock once said, “Jazz is about being in the moment.” For the Hot Sardines, that means straddling the modern day and a musical epoch that draws heavily from the Roaring Twenties. Founded by vocalist Elizabeth Bougerol and pianist/bandleader Evan Palazzo roughly a decade ago, this sextet traffics in hot jazz with a contemporary twist. With roots embedded deep in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the Sardines broke around the time that Palazzo’s mentor Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks were resurrecting interest in this musical form via his affiliation with HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Prohibition Era culture was also enjoying a renaissance via venues like the Shanghai Mermaid, a speakeasy-themed, 6,000-square-foot warehouse behind
an unmarked door in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. More than anything, it was the instantaneous connection he made with Bougerol, who answered a Craigslist ad placed by the piano player’s wife seeking like-minded musicians. “I had been coaxed and convinced that I should start a band because I’ve always played this music. Since I was a little child, I started playing piano and I learned how to play my version of stride piano. It wasn’t a focus of my life, but I would play it every day,” Palazzo explained. “Elizabeth saw the ad and showed up at one of our jams and we hit it off right away. Up to that point, there had been some great cats that came in and played, but Elizabeth had that same exact sensibility toward the music that I had. We started meeting on our own—doing piano/ vocals and working on arrangements and fantasies as a sort of hobby. This
went on for some time. After a while, we talked about doing an open mic.” That first gig wound up at Banjo Jim’s, a defunct Lower East Side haunt, which found them joining forces with their first tap dancer, Edwin “Fast Eddy” Francisco. The band’s name originated from a desire to pay homage to the kind of jazz they played, which was heavily influenced by Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five and Hot Seven combos. “We needed a name and had always wanted something with hot in it—Hot Fives, Hot Sevens, Hot This, Hot That—although we realized that we didn’t want to just play 1920s hot jazz, but the stuff we liked, which encompassed a lot of that,” Palazzo said. “Elizabeth was in her co-op in Brooklyn and she saw a tin of sardines packed in hot sauce called Hot Sardines. She called me up and said that we needed a name. She said

she found these hot sardines and I thought it was great. She thought it was crazy but I said it was terrific, people would remember it and it had hot in it. We were stuck with it and that was that.”

Eight albums in, the Sardines’ latest opus is Welcome Home, Bon Voyage, the group’s second live outing (following 2014’s Live at Joe’s Pub). Recorded at Toronto’s Koerner Hall and their beloved Joe’s Pub home base, this collection embraces everything from a rambunctious reading of Sophie Tucker’s 1910 trademark “Some of These Days” and a dissonant version of the Duke Ellington/Juan Tizol classic “Caravan” to a soaring and syncopated rendition of “Everybody Loves My Baby” that Armstrong first recorded in 1924. It’s an album that Palazzo and his compatriots are rightfully proud of. “The inspiration [for the album] was the energy of a live performance and the feelings that the audience gets hearing this music live. It’s what brought Elizabeth and I together. It was the lack of being able to hear this music played with young blood,” he said. “For the live album, we wanted to really try to capture the energy of two different atmospheres that we love to play that are somewhat different. And that is Joe’s Pub and Koerner Hall in Toronto.” Palazzo’s jazz indoctrination started at the ripe age of two. As a child born and raised on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, he was exposed to the opening and subsequent seven-minute version of “St. Louis Blues” found on the 1954 recording, Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy. And while Satchmo has always been a huge influence, it was at the altar of Harlem stride piano master Fats Waller that the young Palazzo worshiped (and later bonded with Bougerol over).
The band’s live show not only features Bougerol singing in French and English (and occasionally strapping on a washboard), but enthralls audiences with a three-man horn section made up of trumpet, trombone and saxophone/clarinet. Rounded out by a drummer, bass player and pianist, Palazzo feels the group’s ever-present tap dancer, “...presents a visual depiction of the energy that I think comes from this era and is rarely seen. We’ve always wanted to include that in our performances. That was one of the early things Elizabeth and I thought we should always have.” As for the uninitiated, Palazzo is rather matter-of-fact as to the essence of the Hot Sardines. “For somebody who has never heard this music before, I would say it is more than happy music, though it is. It’s joyous and a kind of fun that can be a little naughty or sincere. It’s a kind of fun that you’re not really getting in the wonderful music you’re hearing all the time, even in jazz,” he said. “We have a panoply of emotions of how music speaks to us and I think this is one that people will dig. I always say that if you’ve ever seen a second line in New Orleans, this is the visual I give because I think people really hear with their eyes and then they listen.” Hot Sardines will be appearing on May 26 at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, 425 Lafayette St. NYC. For more information, visit www. joespub.com or call 212-239-6200. Visit www.longislandweekly.com for a longer version of this story and to read about Evan Palazzo’s favorite pianists.

28th Annual Swing For Kids Honors Three Generations Of The Klar Family
T
illes Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post recently announced their annual Swing for Kids Tournament honoring three generations of the Klar Family, Henry Klar (in memoriam), Steven Klar and Ashton Klar. The tournament will be held Thursday, June 6, at The Creek Club in Locust Valley. In addition to
presenting world-class performances to the Long Island community, Tilles Center is proud to educate and engage tens of thousands of children and adult learners throughout Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens counties each year through its vast array of arts education programs. Tilles Center’s 28th annual Swing for Kids Tournament helps fund these integral arts education initiatives. “Our highly acclaimed arts education programs are designed to Inspire, Enrich
Steven and Ashton Klar
and Empower children and adult learners,” said William Biddle, executive director, Tilles Center. We work hard to make the arts accessible to all audiences, with a particular focus on high-needs communities. We are thrilled to honor the Klar Family for their ongoing support of arts education.” “On behalf of myself and my family, I am deeply honored to be this years’ Swing for Kids honoree. To aid in the mission of Tilles Center’s arts education programs, which help enlighten thousands of children throughout Long Island and Queens, is very special,” added Steven Klar. “My hope is we will have the most successful event in the event’s 28 year history.” Henry Klar was a lawyer, realtor and pioneer in Long Island’s suburban growth. He was a member of Pine Hollow Country Club for more than 25 years, and Woodlands Country Club in Fort Lauderdale for the last 30 years of his life. Although not a great golfer himself, for more than 20 years Henry traveled around the world on luxury cruise ships as golf director. He improved peoples’ swings and putting while not showing his own somewhat retracted swing. One of his joys in golf was winning “Best Ball Foursome” in 1996 at Tilles Center’s Swing for Kids Tournament at The Creek while playing with his son Steven. He was married to his wife
Gloria for more than 60 years. Steven Klar, a lawyer, builder and real estate developer for more than 40 years, has been intricately involved with Tilles Center for the last 30 years. He sits on Tilles Center’s Council of Overseers and has served Long Island University as a member of the board of trustees for 16 years. He is the founder of The Klar Leadership Academy at the University of Toledo and The Hofstra School of Medicine Klar Family Leadership Program. While not an exceptional golfer, he has instilled in his son, Ashton, an affinity for the game. Ashton has been playing since he was 2 ½ years old, and has exceptional hand/eye coordination and a natural swing, which have been turning heads on the driving range for many years. He started playing at Glen Oaks Club, where his family has had a membership for the last 25 years, and now plays on the Travel League at Nassau Country Club. Kathy Klar, a loving wife and mother, happily supports her family on and off the golf course. The Klar Family has a deep appreciation for the arts and the important role Tilles Center plays in educating Long Island’s youth. Through its donation, the foundation has adopted “King” as part of Pal-O-Mine’s “Adopt a Horse” program. King is a Brown Dun-colored, 13-year old Norwegian Fjord and one of Pal-O-Mine’s herd of equine teachers. “Our horses are the heartbeat of our equine programs,” said Pal-O-Mine Equestrian CEO Lisa Gatti. “They are attuned to the feelings of the student, nonjudgmental and serve to empower individuals whether working

The Michael Scotto Memorial Foundation’s generous contribution will go toward feeding and caring for King. Nassau County Legislative Majority Condemns Cashless Bail In New York
“My husband was struck by a drunk driver 15 months ago, and if this new reform was in place, the case would have been very different, and the person who committed this horrible crime would not have had to post bail,” said MADD member Mary Ellen Gormley. “This is horrible for the victims, and we need to try to have this stopped in Albany.” Judges can no longer consider a defendant’s “dangerousness” in deciding whether he or she would be detained pre-trial; a common sense measure to keep
violent individuals off the streets. When determining whether to detain somebody pretrial, judges are only allowed to consider evidence relevant to whether the defendant is expected to attend court dates out of his or her own volition. “We’ve taken a giant leap off a cliff and are living in a very dangerous new world. Criminals in New York State will no longer be given bail for all misdemeanors and all non-violent felonies,” said Brian Sullivan, president of the Nassau County Corrections Union. “They won’t even be able to be taken into custody by our police. Criminals will be given a desk appearance ticket and immediately freed at the scene of the crime and advised to come to court at a later time,” This includes many levels of arson, DWI, many levels of rape, burglary, possession of a weapon on school grounds, selling drugs on school property, stalking, reckless destruction of property, possession of child pornography, forcible touching and many drug crimes. This has been labeled by its creators as benefits low income communities and specifically people of color. This is nonsense. Black people don’t commit crimes. Brown people don’t commit crimes. White people don’t commit crimes. Criminals commit crimes.” —Nassau County

embers of the Nassau County Corrections, police, superior officers and detectives unions along with advocates and elected officials urged state lawmakers to re-think their cashless bail “reforms.” Last month, Albany lawmakers included in the state’s budget a series of changes to the cash bail system. Under this new system, most people arrested for selling drugs, most property crimes, theft, driving while intoxicated and burglary would not be required to provide bail money to ensure their appearance in court. “One of the most fundamental duties of a legislator is to keep our citizens safe. This law betrays that duty,” said presiding officer Richard Nicolello. “Cashless bail will make our streets and neighborhoods more dangerous, will leave our residents more vulnerable to crime and will handcuff our law enforcement.” The law relies on things like text alerts or supervision by a pre-trial services agency. In addition, skipping out on a court date will no longer won’t automatically earn a defendant a warrant for their arrest. The new law gives the benefit of the doubt, and most defendants will get a 48-hour window to appear in court voluntarily.

GRILL SEASON
Start The Season Right With Grill Safety
W
ith Memorial Day around the corner marking the official start of the summer season, everyone is getting ready to heat up the grill. While gas grills, portable fire pits, and patio heaters make outdoor spaces comfortable and desirable places to gather, it’s important that they are used properly. The New York Propane Gas Association (NYPGA) helps consumers keep grilling season safe with these key tips:
qualified appliance repair person and be sure to locate your model number and the manufacturer’s consumer inquiry phone number and write them on the front page of your manual. If you smell gas and you are able to, safely turn off the cylinder vale, turning it to the right (clockwise) and immediately leave the area and call 911 or your local fire department. Before you use the grill again, have a service technician inspect your cylinder for safe use.
Firing Up The Grill Safely
Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks and never use starter fluid with propane grills. It may seem obvious, but never smoke while handling a propane cylinder, and keep all flammable materials away from the grill. When lighting the grill, if the grill does not ignite within 10 seconds, turn off the gas, keep the lid open and wait five minutes before trying again. If the igniter fails to light the grill after two or three tries, turn off the gas and replace the igniter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Regularly check the tubes that lead into the burner for blockage from insects or food grease and never attempt to repair, clean or clear blockages on a hot grill.
Ventilation
Always keep the lid open when lighting your grill and don’t close it until you are sure the grill is lit. It is extremely important to keep the grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, at least 10 feet away from the house— and at least three feet away from trees and shrubs. Never cover the bottom of the grill with foil as it can restrict air circulation. Always be sure to use and store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright position and after filling or exchanging a cylinder, take it home immediately. While transporting the cylinder, keep your vehicle ventilated

he doors are unlocked. It’s time to take a stroll in to one of the largest Porsche dealerships in America, Porsche Gold Coast, located at 125 S. Service Rd., in Jericho, which just roared its engines for the first time. The Porsche dealership unveiled its all-new showroom and service facility last Thursday, featuring an evening of elegance that is synonymous with the manufacturer. Who knows, maybe even Porschefanatic Jerry Seinfeld will stop by at some point. “We’re the same friendly people and service, now we’ve built one of the largest Porsche dealerships in the nation, a Porsche masterpiece, all for you,” Evan Christodoulou, general manager and dealer principal, said. “For those who aspire to drive a Porsche, they should demand nothing less than the absolute, uncompromised best ownership experience humanly possible. Our team of professionals delivers better than anyone else out there.” This is the fifth Porsche dealership on Long Island and the first on Nassau County’s north shore. Porsche Gold Coast features a multi-level showroom, with an all-indoor showcase. The 125,000-square-foot dealership includes more than 200 new and certified pre-owned Porsche vehicles. It also has rare and classic Porsche cars, perfect for enthusiasts on the island. “Not all Porsche dealers are created equal,”

And, our state-of-the-art service facility, multi-million dollar Porsche Genuine Parts inventory on hand and our 360-degree comprehensive Porsche service and customer care, we’re here when you and your Porsche need help the most.” The Jericho dealership will be exclusive to Porsche vehicles. Porsche Cars North America plans on having it serve as of the largest in the nation. At its grand opening, the dealership became one of 11 Porsche certified classic partners in the United States. “We needed to convert to the newest generation of the Porsche look,” Christodoulou said. “We have five floors of dealership, with floor elevators and all of the things that come with a vertical expansion. This is the latest generation of the Porsche look.” Porsche Gold Coast is the revamped version of the previous Roslyn Heights-based Porsche Roslyn. It will continue to serve as one of the most active dealerships on the island, including involvement with automotive enthusiast clubs, the New York Metro Region Porsche Club, a sponsorship for the annual Americana Manhasset Concours d’Elegance Auto Showcase and more. The dealership expects to sell about 1,000 Porsche vehicles each year. For more information, call the dealership at 516-758-0800.
Island Harvest Food Bank Receives $30,000 Grant The funds, courtesy of HSBC will go towards the Kids Weekend Backpack Feeding Program

sland Harvest Food Bank, a leading hunger-relief organization that provides food and other resources to people in need, recently announced that HSBC has once again awarded a $30,000 grant to help fund its Kids Weekend Backpack Feeding Program that provides additional food support to children who rely on their school’s free breakfast and lunch program during the week, but often don’t get enough to eat over the weekend. HSBC supported the program last year through its 2018 Child and Family Hunger and Volunteer Engagement Program, helping to support approximately 1,800 food-insecure school children during the school year. Also, HSBC corporate volunteers donated their time at Island Harvest Food Bank to help collect, pack, and distribute food to help approximately 300,000 Long Islanders struggling with hunger and food insecurity. “HSBC has established itself as an important, and caring partner with Island Harvest Food Bank in our fight to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner,

(Photo courtesy of Feeding America) president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Thanks to HSBC’s efforts and generosity, countless Long Island children will get enough food to help them make it through the weekend, and for that, we are exceptionally thankful.”
More than 100,000 children on Long Island qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program. For many of these kids, school meals may be the only meals they eat. Since 2006, Island Harvest Food Bank’s Kids Weekend Backpack Feeding Program has been supplementing meals on the weekends for children who depend on school breakfasts and lunches, during the week. Every Friday during the school year, Island Harvest Food Bank supplies children who are food-insecure with packs of nutritious, shelf-stable food; each pack contains enough for two lunches, two breakfasts, two snacks, and two servings of milk. During the 2017-18 school year, the Kids Weekend Backpack Feeding Program distributed more than 64,000 food packs to 1,800 kids, representing approximately 256,000 healthy meals to children in 29 schools in 12 school districts Nassau and Suffolk counties. —Submitted by Island Harvest Food Bank

safety features galore. This Rav4 has 27 horsepower more than the 2018 version, making it just a bit more powerful for those who love speed. We spoke with Everett Ulmer, a sales manager at Westbury Toyota, who explains why Long Islanders need to take a look at the 2019 Rav4.
Q A
difference and the cost is really low. It’s only about $1,000 more to get the same car, but in the hybrid version. Believe it or not, the hybrid version has a little more power than the gas version. The ride is a little smoother and has a little more pep.
Everett Ulmer
What’s new about the Rav4 for 2019?
It’s completely restyled. There’s all-new technology, including Apple CarPlay. There are new safety features. The Toyota Safety Sense is the new standard on all of the cars. They have cold weather packages, so you have heated seats and steering wheels on the lower trim models, which you could only get on the fully-loaded, limited and platinum vehicles. They completely revamped it and it looks great. The miles per gallon is high, so it’s tremendous.
Q A
What are the differences between the different versions of the Rav4?
There are gas models and hybrid models. The great thing about what Toyota did for the hybrid and the gas models is that a lot of the features are the same. It’s just the engine
Q
What makes this stand out compared to the rest of the Toyota fleet?
A
The styling. Toyota stepped up their styling over the last five or so years. All of the new models make the styling really stand out. Toyota still stays true to their tradition. But they’re finding a way to make the cars fancier and stand out more.
Q A
Which version of the Rav4 is the most popular?
The XLE is best. On the XLE model, there’s a big swing where you can get one that’s trimmed down, but still get a lot of stuff. You can still get a bunch of features in the car and at a reasonable price. They have the cold weather package. On the XLE model, you can get heated leather, heated leather steering wheel, power-driving seats, which you’d usually have to go to the limited model to get. Customers used to have to spend an extra $6,000 to $8,000 to get that, but now they don’t have to spend the couple of extra thousand.
Q
What makes the Rav4 stand out compared to the SUV competition?
The 2019 Rav4 comes in a variety of colors, and customers can design their new ride online.
A
I would say Toyota’s reputation is what makes the Rav4 stand out. Toyotas are known as one of the most reliable brands. They stay true to that. They build a quality car and it looks great as well. The lines on the car looks great. Toyota used to have a boxy-look to it, but now, it looks sleek.
Q A
What is the Toyota Safety Sense?
Obviously, Toyota’s core belief is safety. The customers need to be protected in the cars. In 2017, Toyota came out with that technology and made sure every car in the lineup had that, including the new Rav4. You have the dynamic radar cruise control, which allows the car to monitor the distance between two vehicles, so you’re keeping your distance and increasing and decreasing speed accordingly. You have the automatic high beams, which gives you enhanced visibility. With autonomous cars coming up, a lot of features in cars are starting to have the ability to do things like that.

A Look Back At The 2019 New York International Auto Show

oncept cars. Compact vehicles. Trucks. Vans. SUVs. Sedans. Racecars. You name the car and it was in Manhattan. As April showered in, auto manufacturers showed they are as creative as ever, debuting everything from new body styles to different paint jobs that you’ve never seen before on the streets of New York—or anywhere else for that matter. Auto Show at the Javits Center was a smash hit. Some manufacturers unveiled brand-new cars, while others wanted to give fans a blast in the past with nostalgic vehicles. When all was said and done, the show, which spanned from April 19 to 28, was the place to be for automobile aficionados. To kick things off, Porsche revealed the all-new 911 Speedster, one of the lightest and quickest cars on the market. It was followed by a wild unveil from Subaru, which literally created a mountain in the middle of the Javits Center to show how durable its 2020 Outback is. The Outback comes with a sporty turbocharged engine, all while keeping Subaru’s traditional exterior beauty. Some manufacturers made sure to have fun with attendees. Chevrolet had several futuristic concepts, including virtual reality tours of its testing facility in Michigan. But that wasn’t all. The bow-tie gang also had an interactive station set up to showcase its driverless technology. Set up like a radio control car track, Chevrolet had bodyless cars with a remote control for fans to drive around a circuit. The track was dense, complicated and tough to maneuver. Fans had no clue they were actually being timed until after the fact, when their score would pop up on a screen behind them. Suddenly, a member of the bow-tie
team would click a button and the car would easily slide through the course, raising all sorts of questions about the amazing self-driving technology that will soon be featured in their street vehicles. Ford even partnered with The Lego Group to have younger fans join in on the fun. The blue oval had life-size racecar drivers made out of Legos, as well as miniature ones. Kids made their own Lego Ford Performance buddy, and parents joined in on the fun, too. Of course, Toyota had to showcase its ingenuity. The Japanese auto maker opted to show off its cars of the future. Not only did it feature its NASCAR racecars—a Camry and a Supra—but Toyota had a vehicle there that you’d think is a mirror. When passing by this concept machine, its shiny rims, sleek yet awkward look made attendees ask just about every Toyota worker what in the world it is. Toyota also debuted a new-look Highlander, creating a fresh design for one of the manufacturer’s most popular SUVs. One of the most viewed exhibits at the auto show was Nissan’s “Ultimate Dream Garage,” featuring none other than the legendary Datsun. Datsun, the American version of Nissan in the late-1960s to early 1970s, took the nation’s streets by storm. It all started with the 1969 launch of the Z series in New York City. This sports coupe was cheap compared to other international sports cars. Its 240Z was a highlight amongst car collectors, and it still is to this day. The Datsun was rare, selling only 16,215 in America in 1970 and 33,684 a year later, according to Hagerty, a classic car valuation organization. And that made it even more popular. The New York International Auto Show provided New Yorkers a chance to see the past, present and future, and it doesn’t get much better than that.

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND What's your sport?
ARIES (March 21-April 19). You are different from other people in many ways. Also, everyone is different from other people in many ways. Some of those ways you consider special and positive, and others you may see as deficits, but even those can be applied to motivate you. Get on your own side, and don’t bother trying to fit in. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Inspiring events and people will spark curiosity and open possibility. This is so different from what you’re doing now that it’s a lot to wrap your head around. Envisioning things can be like a test. If you can fall in love with this idea of yourself, then you can also make this idea real. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). It’s time to apply the excellent care to your emotional body that you do to your physical body. Notice how you’re feeling. There’s no good reason to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation or to spend time in draining or negative situations. Fortune favors your effort to actively aim yourself toward emotional health. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You’ll hit on an idea worth chasing around some more. Approach the matter with a 10% increase in curiosity, and suddenly the game changes. New and different questions split the thing wide open. Others have wondered or struggled along these lines, and the issue will be a source of bonding. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). If you need a thing, other people do, too. Solving your problem could lead to solving theirs. So, take your problem seriously and give it the attention necessary to make something happen. It may not seem like the case right now, but all the time, money and thought you put into this will be for a higher cause. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Usually, when life’s turns confound expectation, you’re down for the ride. Well, there’s none of that this week. What you figure will happen is pretty much what will -- unless you’re the one who comes up with the surprises. Playing with other people’s expectations will bring just as much delight to you as it does them. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’re an expert at making others feel safe and comfortable. Not only does it mean you get invitations and that people gravitate toward you, but people also give you an honest side of themselves. You’ll benefit from the knowledge, especially if you’re discreet and somewhat strategic with what you know. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Never before in the history of the planet have there been so many readily available answers. And yet, one can only rise to the level of the question being asked. Strive to ask better questions. A quality question opens up new possibilities and, be warned, leads to more questions. But don’t let that stop you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Life would be so hard if everyone wanted the same thing. Conformity is the enemy of symbiosis. This week features happy relationships between people with complementary aims. To start the wheeling and dealing, someone has to bravely divulge unique needs, wants, cravings and differences. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You see yourself in a certain way, and yet your life does not yet support this view of who you are. Don’t worry. Life will catch up. Keep your vision strong and do the actions that will continue to point you in the directions of this identity. You’re allowed to say who you are. Don’t let anyone say it for you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Whether or not it is possible to instate rules for love that you’ll actually be able to follow is a debate in and of itself. Were you to be able to do such a thing, the best rule to apply to the romantic sector would be to only love those who love you back in kind. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). The lazy way is to wait for moments to define and shape a life, the “take what comes, and get what you get” mentality. That’s not going to work for you. For starters, you’re far from lazy. You’ve an agenda this week and some excellent ideas about how to satisfy it. So, you’ll set out to make your own moments.

The 8-Bit Big Band revolutionizes video game music to the tune of a full orchestra By JeNNiFeR FauCi JFauci@antonmediagroup.com
Charlie Rosen
A
full-size orchestra that plays video game music? Whoever heard of such a thing? For Los Angeles transplant turned New Yorker Charlie Rosen, he saw a need to blend together his two hobbies: music and video games. The idea would culminate into The 8-Bit Big Band, a 25 member Jazz/Pops orchestra that rearranges music to the tunes of classic video games. “I have always loved large ensemble music and grew up listening to orchestras, but I have also been a lifelong gamer since I was a kid,” said Rosen, who likens video game music to those of film scores. “People grow up with emotional experiences of consuming this media and fall in love with music associated with films and shows. I grew up with a video game library of the new American songbook, and I think it deserves the same entertainment as the Golden Age American Songbook.” Rosen, who is the bandleader of The 8-Bit Big Band spends time on the Broadway scene as the music supervisor for Broadway hit Be More Chill. The
multi-instrumentalist with an eclectic taste in music, credits music as being in his blood; with a classical musician for a mother and a jazz musician and organist for a father. He merged his two interests together and voilà! The 8-Bit Big Band was born. As for the name, Rosen wanted to utilize the term “8 bit,” which is associated with video game terminology. “It feels like a niche community, but it has a huge passionate fanbase. If you find musicians who are gamers, they hear about us and immediately think what we do is amazing,” said Rosen, who has found that people with various talents are willing to jump on board such a cool project. “We have had inspiring singers from Japan, animators from Europe and musicians from the states join in on the fun. I treat the music with respect and I’m arranging it in a professional way.” Rosen enjoys top tier jazz musical arrangements since it is already “great music at its core.” But when he gets to arranging Mario, Zelda, Tetris, and Pokémon, a whole other level of nostalgia kicks in, resonating with

It’s the most incredible and complex video game soundtrack of all time. That soundtrack taught me music theory.” When deciding on what music to arrange, Rosen draws from his own body of knowledge. However, he has a particular penchant towards Nintendo. “Koji Kondo of Nintendo is an incredible writer and composer. Sometimes I go hunting and look for what stands out to me,” said Rosen. “Still Alive from the game Portal is a rock song and when I was listening to it, I thought it could be good as a Frank Sinatra-style classic and it really worked.” To get their music, The 8-Bit Big Band has albums on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon, anywhere that can stream music.
