eetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. Uh, oh. He’s been summoned—to the stage, that is. The original Tim Burton cult classic has been turned into a fourth-wall-breaking, death-embracing musical phenomenon on the Broadway stage. But that ghostly experience doesn’t start on stage. As soon as musical-goers enter the theater, it’s like they’re transported
into the netherworld. Green and purple strobes illuminate those who come dressed in long striped socks or a full Beetlejuice costume. “It’s my new favorite thing— seeing people in costume and their reaction, it’s so over the top and crazy,” said Kerry Butler (Mean Girls) who plays the role of Barbara Maitland, one half of the ghost couple described as “a little on the Pottery Barn and dry white wine side” in the show. “It’s my favorite thing
about the show now.” The production starts with a ballad, setting it apart from most other musicals on Broadway, in which Betelgeuse—pronounced Beetlejuice and played by Alex Brightman (School of Rock The Musical)—breaks the fourth wall to immediately speak to the audience about. The musical follows the story of the 1988 film, which starred Alec Baldwin as Adam Maitland, Geena Davis as Barbara Maitland, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Michael Keaton as
Betelgeuse, with a few tweaks added to make the plot more clear and modernized elements to bring it into the 21st century. “It’s funny because you know how sometimes you remember something differently, when I watched the movie again, I loved all the things I loved, but I liked the way they changed our show and fleshed things out more and it was a bit more clear,” said Butler. “There’s no need for it to

CULT CLASSIC from page 3 be set in the ’80s because the story is timeless, so it just felt right they made it contemporary and more relatable to the audience now.” For lead Sophia Anne Caruso (The Sound of Music Live!, Blackbird), who plays Lydia Deetz, she’s always been a fan of Burton and the original, but said she wanted to make the character her own. “I didn’t want to copy Winona Ryder,” said Caruso, who has been developing the character for three years. “I didn’t really focus on not seeing it—I just didn’t have a desire to rewatch it when I was creating the role.” The show delves into some heavy themes. At the onset of the musical, Lydia sings about being invisible in the prologue and the loss of her mother in “Dead Mom,” while Adam (Rob McClure, Honeymoon in Vegas) and Barbara Maitland sing “Ready, Set, Not Yet” about not being ready to have a child. But Caruso is no stranger to this subject matter or ghosts. “A lot of the shows I’ve been a part of have been about death and dying, really dark subject matter,” said Caruso, who said she has paranormal experiences and even remembers
From left: Sophie Anne Caruso (Lydia Deetz), Rob McClure (Adam Maitland) and Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland) speaking to a man in the basement of her mother’s antique shop when others saw her talking to the air. “In the movie, they sort of romanticize
[Lydia’s] Gothicness and sadness and depression. It’s turned into something beautiful and it’s not. In our Beetlejuice on stage I’ve worked really hard over the past three years to make it an accurate depiction of what it’s like to be a teenage girl grieving.” Despite the show’s ominous themes of death, the musical’s jokes—many of which Butler explained were improvised by Brightman during rehearsals—puppets, sets, special effects and projections keep the audience rumbling with laughter from start to finish, masking the themes behind a light and joyful atmosphere—which mirrors the way many humans deal with death, repressing the thoughts and focusing on the everyday, the positives. “Beetlejuice has a really dark plot, but Beetlejuice’s subplot is full of laughing and joy, so I think that contrasts well with the dark themes and makes them bearable and keeps the audience engaged to stick through it and learn something,” said Caruso.

“I’ve heard people saying that it stayed with them for days after, really thinking about the afterlife because there aren’t many shows talking about death from a thoughtful perspective,” added Butler. “In the moment, you’re laughing so much, so it’s something that hits you later, which is something I think theater does.” The cast brings the film’s iconic scenes, like the dinner party scene where the cast sings “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” and the closing song, “Jump in the Line (Shake Señora),” where levitation comes into play, to life. The set design—from the Maitland/Deetz home to the afterlife—and the puppeteer work really brought the ghoulish, other-worldly feel to the stage. Butler, whose husband, Joey Mazzarino is a puppeteer, explained the puppets, including a gigantic snake and some large Betelgeuse arms, were created to mimic the Burton homemade-feel. “A lot of the magic is that it’s old-school magic,” Butler said of the effects. “The craziest thing for me during the show has been the special effects because my hand has been on fire and people think it’s not real. I’m like, ‘oh no, it’s hot. My hand is on fire.’ The other night I thought I was going to set my hair on fire. I was like, ‘Oh my God. Is it burning?’” Because this production compiles an eclectic mix of elements, dark themes and constant comedy, Beetlejuice has been nominated for eight Tony Award nominations, including best musical; Brightman for outstanding actor in a leading role in a musical; Scott Brown and Anthony King for best book of a musical; Eddie Perfect for best new score; David Korins for best scenic design of a musical; William Ivey Long for best costume design of a musical; Peter Hylenski for best sound design of a musical; and Kenneth Posner and Peter Nigrini for best lighting design of a musical. The Tonys will air on Sunday, June 9, at 8 p.m. on CBS. Beetlejuice is currently on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre. For tickets, visit telecharge.com.

harles Dickens was a writer born to the breed. His father, John, was a journalist, a trade his son would also excel in. Dickens had an unhappy youth. John Dickens pulled his son from grade school and sent him to work in one of those child labor factories that were the scourge of the 19th century. The young Dickens hated it. But Dickens was resilient. He latched onto work in newspapers and began writing fiction. At age 25, he published The Pickwick Papers, a critical and financial success that launched the most successful literary career of the century. Flannery O’Connor declared that if a young person survives high school, they have enough to write about for the rest of their lives. Dickens survived a hellish youth. He saw, early on, the world of greed and exploitation. It gave him his own lifelong subject. Dickens became a phenomenon. The 19th century was the peak of modern Britain and London was the world’s most populous city. The British pound sterling dominated the world’s currency; its Navy ruled the seas. The novels of Charles Dickens, similarly, announced the centrality of British life to world history. Dickens explored this great spinning world in one sprawling novel after another. His theme was simply how to make sense of an age, that his biographer Jane Smiley claimed, was defined by triumphant capitalism, high speed travel, freedom of action and the dissolution of old neighborhoods. Dickens was the ideal artist to capture all of British life. As another critic observed, the novelist represented no group and thus, was
able to represent all groups. A self-made man who admired other self-made men, Dickens wrote of the young man who overcomes daunting obstacles of a treacherous urban/industrial order, growing into a manhood that does the right thing by friends, family and community. The titles continue to ring out throughout the ages: David Copperfield, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, Hard Times, The Pickwick Papers, Bleak House, Little Dorrit and Dombey and Sons. And consider the names of his cast of characters. Where did they come from? They all have a way of sucking the reader in by their sheer vividness: Major Bagstock, Peckinsniff, Caddy Jellby, Jingle, Mrs. Bumble, Dick Sweveller, Mrs. Micawhers, Sissy Jupe, Uriah Heep, Madame DeFarge. Not since Shakespeare had so many rich and colorful characters flowed from a man’s pen. Dickens continued to amaze. Think of the novelist as a one-man version of The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. He reveled in public readings. Dickens remains beloved for A Christmas Carol. The man would spend weeks preparing for his reading of that classic before embarking on nationwide tours. It worked. Dickens read before packed houses, while collecting handsome fees. Audiences sat transfixed, they laughed, cried and applauded. It’s a wonder that Dickens had the discipline to get back to the writing table. A prolific novelist and performer, Dickens’ career represented a stunning breakthrough. For centuries on end, the writer had to console himself that recognition, not to mention some real money, would never come his way during his lifetime. The writer could only hope to be discovered

ew York City, which can at times be considered a giant melting pot and rightfully so, has a brand new art exhibit in its midst in Rockefeller Center with the brand new Frieze Sculpture exhibit. In conjunction with the annual Frieze New York art fair and real estate firm Tishman Speyer, Frieze Sculpture is a major new public art initiative that allows visitors to explore new and significant sculptures across Rockefeller Center by 14 international artists including Goshka Macuga, Ibrahim Mahama, Joan Miró, Paulo Nazareth, Sarah Sze, Hank Willis Thomas and many others. Located in the heart of the plaza of Rockefeller Center, kiosks can be found giving visitors a list of locations of where to find all 16 sculptures that are a part of the exhibit, allowing eager art-seekers to

built-in art and architecture of Rockefeller Center, which has its history go as far back as the early 1800s. Since these various sculptures piqued my overall interest, I recently traveled to Rockefeller Center to see firsthand these works of art that I’ve been

For decades, Martha Stewart was and still is the gold standard for all things baking, crafting and home décor. So much so that she teamed up with Cricut for the Martha Stewart special edition of the Cricut Explore Air 2, a cutting machine that makes imaginative design ideas come to life. Karley Hall is the Cricut education program manager and it is her job to teach people how to use and get the most out of the machine using the free Cricut Design Space web program. And while it may seem daunting (I myself studied and meditated a bit before opening the box), Hall holds true to her belief that with the Cricut, anyone can craft.

It really allows someone with a simple idea to execute their vision. The Cricut turns everyone into a crafty person and there are so many different versions of the machine at affordable price points. The Design Space program is intuitive and you can be up and cutting in five minutes.

A
It is now a household name. Tell me about the Cricut.
Simply put, it’s a cutting machine. It may seem overwhelming, but it’s a powerful DIY tool that allows you to import designs using the Cricut Design Space program and electronically cut those designs. Anyone can be a crafter.
Some people consider the Cricut a 3D printer of sorts. Can you explain how it works?
The web-based application Cricut Design Space communicates with the machine for any font or style or shape you tell it to design. Simply upload the design onto the program and cut out whatever you want to. Some people refer to it as a printer but there is no ink. Instead, there are super tiny, very fine-point blades that cut the material. You can use different pens and scoring tools to cut and embellish your products for a variety of looks.
Q
How has the Cricut revolutionized the DIY and crafting game?
8A | SUMMERTIME! • JUNE 5 - 11, 2019
Back in the day, scrapbooking was popular, but now, the Cricut has truly changed how brides plan their wedding décor and how party planners execute events. Can you speak on that?
People want to be able to customize and they see this machine as a way to put their own touches on things. Weddings are perfect for DIY brides because a wedding alone is a huge expense, so if you can make something with the Cricut for a few dollars and customize it in minutes, it will save so much time and money.
Q
From paper and vinyl to fabric and leather, it seems there’s nothing this machine can’t make. What products are fun to make on the Cricut?
A
The intimidation is real so I recommend starting with a cardstock material. Play around with the web program—we have 75,000 images and fonts. As for the machine’s tools, there is the machine blades, which are similar to sewing sheers; a fabric bonded blade; a fine point and deep point blade; a spatula and scraper, all of which are very important when you’re crafting.
Q A
What kind of maintenance is involved?
It can get dirty and you may have to wipe it down and get new mats, which hold down your material, but it’s overall minimal maintenance. You’ll need to buy replacement blades once in a while as well.
Q A
Why should someone invest in a Cricut?
If you have an interest in the craft space, a Cricut is a must. It really is a life changer. There is such a sense of accomplishment when you complete your first project and it’s such a proud moment when you gift your creations and custom projects to friends and family. So many people have opened small businesses and it is even seeping into schools and universities. Need more help with your Cricut? Safe Boating Tips For Summer Fun
A
Invest in a personal flotation device for your pet
day on the water can be an enjoyable experience no matter what season it is, but it’s important to avoid any mishaps throughout your day on the boat. With increasing boat activity in the run up to summer, Allstate reminds New York boaters that it is a good time to refresh their boating safety knowledge, assess local water levels and to review boating regulations.
Know how to navigate your vessel
When navigating the waters, it’s important to abide by the basic Rules of the Road, according to the USCG. Post a lookout, maintain a safe speed and avoid collision.

entanglement with ships or being struck by ships. This is why he seeks to educate others. “Marine mammals are the sentinels of the health of our ocean ecosystems. They are also threatened today…by human activities,” said Kopelman. “Climate change, habitat destruction, unsustainable harvests, ubiquitous plastic pollution, noise pollution and unconstrained resource utilization at the expense of ecosystem services and wildlife is devastating to marine mammals and to all other living things.” In addition to sharing interesting facts and figures about the animals passengers are seeing, as a naturalist he shares his passion for ocean conservation by offering advice on how to keep the oceans healthy. For example, he warns not to release helium balloons into the air. When mylar and party balloons land in the ocean, they can choke or strangle sea creatures. He also discussed the practice of “scientific whaling” in countries like Iceland and Japan, which are blatant attempts to circumvent international regulations. Kopelman is a professor of science
and ecology at SUNY Fashion Institute of Technology, where he teaches a course called “Ecology and Environmental Problems.” “How awful would a world without whales be?” he asked. “We can do better. We must do better to ensure that our children and their children get to live in a healthy world, on a healthy planet, with healthy oceans. We have to change the paradigm and embrace sustainability in all aspects.” Kopelman has had many memorable experiences during his long career. In 1989, a humpback whale breached right near the ship and, in his surprise, exclaimed a slip of profanity into the microphone. “I also remember the day in 2015, when we were coming back from a long trip with no whales only to encounter two North Atlantic right whales—the rarest of the baleen whales—just a few miles from Montauk Point,” he added. In the Long Island area, whale-watching season takes place from July through the beginning of September. The Viking Starship goes out three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, throughout the whole season, barring bad weather. There’s no bad seat on the Viking Starship. you need a brief respite, the seats inside the cabin are a comfortable place to rest. The cruise takes you about 12 nautical miles off shore, though sightings are possible at any time. The excitement on the adults’ faces match that of the children whenever the boat slows down and everyone rushes to the side of the boat to catch a glimpse. There’s nothing quite as spectacular as seeing a 25-ton creature emerge from the ocean and plunge back in with a great big splash. There are a few things you should make sure to bring when you take the cruise—a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and an extra layer or two for when it gets chilly or windy out on the water. It’s also a great idea to bring binoculars or a camera, preferably one with a long lens and fast shutter. Food and beverages are available, including water, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soda, beer, breakfast items, sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs. Don’t Make It Complicated, Get Hydrated BY RAYNA MCCANN
specialsections@antonmediagroup.com
Often times when thinking about nutrition or a healthy lifestyle, the first thought that comes to mind includes a form of dieting or weight. However, there’s so much more to a healthy lifestyle than just weight and food. One common topic often overlooked is the importance of hydration. Adequate hydration is critical every day, and especially as the warmer weather develops. There are various fluids and water rich food items that count towards our hydration but today, we’ll focus specifically on water. Below are a few tips to hopefully help you improve your hydration.
connection. If not, I encourage you to pick a water bottle that you actually want to take around with you. Having a water bottle with you during the day will make it easier to constantly be sipping. Plus, you can readily fill up at water stations instead of drinking from plastic bottles. Consider the temperature you like when selecting a bottle as well. For instance, if you like ice cold water, be sure the bottle is well insulated. Picking a bottle to your liking will hopefully help to hydrate you.
Flavors can be life savers
You’ve likely heard of lemon flavored water, but have you heard of strawberry or mint flavored water? The options to flavor are endless and helps to take the bore out of plain water. If you don’t like lemon, don’t let that discourage you. Try to find a flavor that motivates you to drink. Some of my personal favorites include berries, oranges and cucumbers.
From sunrise to sunset, avoid regrets
You have 24 hours everyday to get enough water in. Now of course, everyone’s schedule is very different and most of us are (hopefully) sleeping for a portion of the day. But something to work into any schedule is drinking a glass of water when you first wake up. Yes, even before any coffee or tea. Try to set realistic goals for yourself about how much you want to finish by certain markers throughout the day. Hold yourself accountable. Sometimes, it helps to find a friend or family member who can check in on you and provide encouragement! As with any nutrition topic, recommended hydration intake is personalized. Speak with your doctor and/or registered dietitian to help set a realistic and healthy hydration goal. Make time for yourself and invest in your health. As I tell my clients, be your own biggest advocate. Your health matters and a huge part of your health relies on your hydration. Now, let’s cheers to that (with water, of course). Rayna McCann is a Clinical Registered Dietitian at a local hospital where she focuses on oncology nutrition. She also sees clients for private counseling through Laura Burak Nutrition. Although they are small in physical stature, the bee is of paramount importance in this world. We need to ensure their protection and encourage these pollinators by providing the right flowers and plants. Have you ever seen a honey bee with yellow on its legs? This is the pollen they carry and make into honey. So how can we help? We can start by researching plant catalogs for flowering plants that encourage bees and other pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds. Many catalogs sell plants in sets or kits to help you start your garden simply by following the guide. Some bee-friendly plants include sunflowers, borage, bee balm, mint, zinnias, and foxglove. Other flowers like a butterfly bush, are also a magnet for butterflies and bees. Try to grow bee-friendly plants in window boxes and in your backyards, no matter how large or small. It is also important to provide
shelter, which can be done with a beehive. You can buy a beehive, complete with a queen bee—locally and online. Also, if you seed an area of your yard—or window boxes—with flowering plants, a variety of bees will come live there. The bees will reward you by pollinating your vegetables and other flowers. Most importantly, do no use pesticides as they can cause sever harm to bees. Without bees, the world would be sorely affected. USDA reported that 25 percent of flowering plants and 35 percent of food crops rely on pollinators like bees. There are 20,000 different types of bees but only 2 percent pollinate the world. If we are all committed to proving flowers and shelter for bees, we can ensure future generations will have honey bees.

Summer Reads: Broadway Joe, Remembering A BY JOE SCOTCHIE
J
jscotchie@antonmediagroup.com
oe Namath is back with a short autobiography. All the Way: My Life in Four Quarters is co-written with Sean Mortimer and Don Yaeger. Every chapter recalls the 1969 Super Bowl III win over the Baltimore Colts. “I was just responding to a question!” Namath protests over his famous “I guarantee it” victory promise. Namath takes the reader through his childhood and adolescence in Beaver Falls, PA, where he starred in both baseball and football at Beaver Falls High School. Western Pennsylvania is the mother lode of quarterbacks: Namath, George Blanda, Johnny Unitas, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Joe Theismann and Jim Kelly. The game has never seen anything like it. Next up was the University of Alabama and his equally legendary career as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback in the early 1960s, when that team dominated college football. Paul “Bear” Bryant, Alabama’s storied head coach remains the adult figure that Namath admires above all men. Namath will always love New York and vice versa, but the man’s heart is at game day on a fall afternoon in Tuscaloosa.
Fresh off biographies on Antonin Scalia, Sandra Day O’Connor and Sonia Sotomayor, Ruth Biskupic takes on John Roberts, current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (The Chief: The Life and Turbulent Times of Chief Justice John Roberts). Biskupic tells the story of an ambitious young man who penned a heartfelt admission letter to an elite boarding school in his native Indiana, as a way to achieve a step-up in the world. Roberts was inspired by President Ronald Reagan’s 1981 inaugural address and was determined to be an effective foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. He spent the 1980s at the Justice Department and later was appointed to the Washington, DC circuit court before becoming George W. Bush’s choice to succeed William Rehnquist as chief justice. Biskupic examines his record as chief justice. She

is critical of his decisions on voting rights, school busing and corporate money in politics and union issues. Roberts, too, cast the deciding vote affirming the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). With Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch now on the court, which John Roberts will stand up: The justice who promised to be a fair and impartial referee or the fifth vote of a conservative majority? Dave Eggers’ eighth novel, The Parade, is a short, tense tale about an unnamed nation in the throes of surviving a civil war that has left death and destruction on both sides. Two men, “Four” and “Nine” are hired to paint a yellow line from the new nation’s two-lane road from the countryside to its largest city. Four is all business. With a wife and daughter back home, he just wants to get the job done. Nine, on the other hand, is out for a good time. He happily mingles with the locals, in ways

e, The Roberts Court, g A Great Historian both innocent and not-so-innocent. It gets them both into big trouble. The terse novel will remind readers of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, about a father and son who are survivors of a nuclear war, plus the equally-bleak fiction of Don DeLillo. John Lukacs: In Memoriam This past May, America lost one of its greatest historian with the passing of John Lukacs at age 95. A native of Hungary who fled to the United States in the later 1940s, Lukacs was the author of more than 30 books, including such provocative classics as Four Days In May, Outgrowing Democracy, Historical Consciousness, A Thread Of Years and A Short History Of The Twentieth Century. To Lukacs, history was a wild ride, full of those cunning passages and contrived corridors fate is heir to. The study of history is infinitely rewarding: Unpredictable, surprising, sobering and hopeful. Lukacs never ran out of books to write, he simply ran out of time. An accessible prose stylist, Lukacs’s great subject was the twentieth century. Its defining moment came in May 1940, when Winston Churchill was determined to confront Adolf Hitler. It was a closer call than people imagine. Members
of the ruling cabinet counseled in favor of an agreement with Berlin. Churchill said no. For Lukacs, this was correct on two counts. First, there was the obvious geo-strategic reasons: Hitler had conquered the continent. He had to be stopped somewhere. There was also an ideological reason. The century was defined by various “isms”: communism, fascism, socialism, capitalism. Of this quartet, fascism, with its emphasis on blood and land, plus scapegoating of “the other,” had the potential to be the most powerful of all. Stop it in its tracks. Lukacs’s view of his adopted homeland was no less sanguine. In Outgrowing Democracy, Lukacs seemed both bemused—and critical—of American materialism, dramatized by its obsessive car culture. In an expanded edition, A New Republic, he mocked the idea of America as the “supreme rulers” of the planet. With its “last, best hope on earth” credo, America, to Lukacs, was in fact a deeply pessimistic nation. He worried that mighty America might yet become a burnt-out case. For Lukacs, all roads led to 1940. He praised Churchill for giving the West “50 more years.” What happens after 1990? Lukacs saw the rising populism in today’s Europe as revealing echoes of the 1930s,
an observation I find dubious. In A Short History Of The Twentieth Century, Lukacs was strong on World War II, the Cold War and the postwar era. The historian also admitted weaknesses when confronting World War I. Did not the time of troubles actually begin in August 1914? Or had the two world wars simply sucked the life’s blood out of the West? The man, if still with us, would have enjoyed rebutting your servant. Get out your library card, rush to the bookstore or log onto to Amazon to discover the ever-expanding universe of John Lukacs.

Treat your tresses to the season’s best products BY ALLISON EICHLER

e’ve all been there—one too many dips in the pool and hours in the sun, and your hair is reduced to straw. It’s not fun, it’s not pretty and it’s certainly not the look you want to rock all summer long. Add to that all of the treatments you put your locks through (yes, that includes heat styling), and you may find yourself at a complete loss for restoring your mane to its healthy state. But, what you should also be careful about—and what many forget to consider—is your scalp health. This season, just as much as you nourish your hair, take care to nourish your scalp as well. ADRIA by Thalia
Created by Mexican singer, songwriter, actress, author and entrepreneur, Thalia, Adria is a full line of haircare ready to prep, cleanse and style your hair for a day of work or play. What sets the Adria line apart is its proprietary CAPPA 5 Complex— coconut, agave, passion fruit, peony
and avocado extracts. The seven-piece collection is sold separately, and delivers salon-quality results at an affordable price. Composed of The Foundation Shampoo ($8.99), The Nourisher Conditioner ($8.99), The Stylist Styling Foam ($9.99), The Big Deal Volumizing Spray ($9.99), the
All-in-Wonderful All-in-One Spray ($9.99), The Refresher Dry Shampoo ($9.99) and The Perfectionist Hair Spray ($9.99), each product boasts a floral scent and an ingredient list that keeps tresses radiant, hydrated and strong. Use the shampoo and conditioner for hair that dries soft, frizz-free and
ultra shiny. Not a hair washing day? Use the dry shampoo to absorb oil and add volume and texture. Hold the can an arm's length away and spray directly on the root, massage in and re-apply as needed for best results. said Nunzio Saviano, owner of Nunzio Saviano Salon in Manhattan. . "It also dulls hair’s vibrancy and it is difficult to wash out after multiple applications." To combat this, use the all-in-one spray—a leave-in treatment without the weight—to repair, detangle, control frizz, guard against heat tools and prevent breakage. Before styling, be sure to spritz the volumizing spray to boost your hair's height. Pair that with the styling foam and you'll see hair that's never been so smooth, rich and moisturized. After doing up your hair to perfection, lock it all in with the hairspray for a touchably soft hold on hair, whether you're trying to keep curls in place or keep straight locks tame and smooth. UMMA: A Good Hair Day of Seoul
Just as K-pop has taken the world by storm, so has Korean beauty. From makeup to skin to hair, K-beauty covers
it all, and now, you can indulge in the ultimate K-beauty hair and scalp regimen with UMMA: A Good Hair Day of Seoul. Comprising seven Korean haircare products, this collection was put together by UMMA’s Chief Curator Daniella Jung to solve any and every haircare woe. “A healthy scalp is the essential first step toward achieving beautiful hair,” said UMMA Beauty America-Europe Regional Head Youn Chang. “In Korea, we approach our scalp care in the same way we think about our skincare—with multiple steps to cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate and nourish as the skin needs. In the summer months in particular, it is even more important to care for your scalp.” With this in mind, the A Good Hair Day of Seoul collection includes: Beigic Scalp Revival Purifying Scrub; Beigic Damage Repair Treatment Mask; AMH Shampoo; Moremo Hair Essence Delightful Oil; Moremo Revitalizing Hair Tonic A; AMOS Repair Shine Enrich Night Cream; and White Rabbit Volumizing Air Brush. Complete with weekly, daily and on-the-go routines to achieve
your best hair yet, along with tips and tricks for each product and general haircare, this UMMA collection is a surefire way to make you think differently about how you treat your hair and scalp. Starting with the Beigic scalp scrub, which doubles as a shampoo, cleanse and restore your scalp’s natural balance with ingredients like sea salt, mint menthol and green coffee bean, all while adding volume and radiance to your locks. If you choose to skip the scrub that day, use the deliciously pine-scented AMH shampoo—formulated with salicylic acid and zinc pyrithione to exfoliate and improve scalp health. “Use a clarifying or scalp exfoliating shampoo once a week to remove styling product build up, dirt, debris and dead skin cells,” said Saviano. “This allows products to work better and for active ingredients to penetrate the scalp.” While scrubs and powerful shampoos can be taxing if used too often, forgo your usual conditioner and use the argan and rosehip oil-infused
Beigic treatment mask, intense enough—without a bad scent—to bring hair back from the damage done by chlorinated pools. Once you’re out of the shower, spray the Moremo tonic A directly onto your wet scalp to strengthen weakened roots with seven different plant root extracts and essential oils. Then, once hair is damp or dry, seal your cuticles and protect damaged tresses by applying the Moremo oil directly to the ends of your hair, delivering a healthy dose of hydration. End the night with the White Rabbit brush, designed with S-shaped teeth that bend and flex to painlessly detangle hair while minimizing damage and adding volume. Apply the AMOS night cream, avoiding the scalp, to seal in the products you’ve applied, maintain your hair’s water-oil balance, mend breakage, and moisturize and nourish your mane—all while you’re asleep. UMMA: A Good Hair Day of Seoul is available for $99.99 at Costco (for both members and nonmembers).

Savor The Flavor BY JENNIFER FAUCI

et summer ready with these delicious recipes that are bursting with bright, fresh flavor. Perfect for a summer barbecue or backyard gathering, whip up sweet potato gnocchi and beet ricotta dip and enjoy with a glass of Meiomi wine. Or better yet, use these recipes in tapas form and serve them at your next wine pairing party. An Italian favorite, gnocchi gets a twist on the classic combination of potato, cream and chives (think scalloped potatoes or a baked potato with sour cream) and pairs perfectly with the dark fruit and jammy notes of Meiomi’s Pinot Noir. To elevate the dish while keeping things simple, we replaced the potato and cream with sweet potato and ricotta and pecorino cheese. The subtle hint of nutmeg rounds out the rich tomato flavor of the sauce and melds well with the traces of baking spices in the Pinot. The chives are an excellent
nod to the spring and bring a fresh awakening flavor to the dish. Experience the taste of beets on a whole new level with the addition of creamy ricotta and citrusy lemon. A colorful and tasty dip for crackers and vegetables this season.
Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Ricotta, Pecorino and Chives Serves 8

veryone knows how beneficial a good vacation, no matter how short, can be for both the mind and body—especially when you have an entire family to consider. Not only does it help reduce the overall level of stress within a household, but you can strengthen family relations and values—something people tend to neglect nowadays. So, let’s take a closer look at our selection of destinations that are both within driving distance and far enough away from everyday struggles.
Fire Island
Many families opt for locations within state borders to minimize time on the road. Fortunately, the Empire State has plenty of family-friendly destinations to offer—here are my top seven to consider:
Lake George
To all the outdoors lovers out there, Lake George represents a weekend getaway dreamcome-true. Here, the sky is the limit—there are
Take a 20-minute ferry ride to a simpler world, one without the need for cars like the suburban jungle of home. Extending a single mile in width and 32 miles in length, Fire Island is the ideal beach getaway. With the 17 communities it is composed of, each area is different. Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park, Davis Park, Saltaire, Faire Harbor and Seaview are family-oriented areas. Note that most home owners will not offer rentals for less than a week. So, this is a trip you would have to plan and book well ahead of time, and it’s only an hour or less away.

Checking In The new TWA Hotel arrives at JFK Airport BY JENNIFER FAUCI jfauci@antonmediagroup.com
U
p, up and away. It was a sight for soaring eyes on May 15, as the brand new TWA Hotel opened at JFK Airport. The ribbon cutting celebration was led by New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo as JFK’s only on-airport hotel opened its 512 soundproof guest rooms, restaurants and retail outlets to the public. The hotel, which, under careful restoration, preserves the iconic Eero Saarinen’s landmark 1962 former Trans World, will deliver world-class airport accommodations unlike any other. MCR, the developer and lead investor, is one of the largest hotel owners in the United States. The redevelopment plan is a public-private partnership between MCR, JetBlue, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey with Turner Construction as the building contractor. When the TWA terminal opened in 1962, it epitomized the glamour and optimism of the Jet Age. The structure was designated a New York City landmark in 1994 and, after its 2001 closure, was

Checking In from page 33A listed on the National and New York State Registers of Historic Places in 2005. “Eero Saarinen’s cathedral to aviation has always looked toward the future,” said Tyler Morse, CEO and Managing Partner of MCR and MORSE Development, in a press statement. “We restored and reimagined his landmark with the same care that he devoted to his design. No detail went overlooked—from the millwork by Amish artisans to the custom font inspired by Saarinen’s own sketches to the one-of-a-kind manhole covers. Starting today, the world can enjoy this mid-century marvel for many years to come.” In addition to its many guestrooms, the new structure includes 50,000 square feet of conference, event and meeting space; a 10,000-squarefoot public observation deck; LEED certification and was impressively redeveloped and privately funded without government subsidies.
Now for the good stuff. Among the six restaurants and eight bars include The Paris Café by Jean-Georges, a 200-seat restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner from an open kitchen in collaboration with Tastes on the Fly; The Sunken Lounge, a cocktail bar operated by Gerber Group and located in the historic chili pepper red-carpeted lounge; a Lockheed Constellation “Connie” L-1649A transformed into a cocktail lounge operated by Gerber Group; Departures Hall grab-and-go dining operated by Fooda, including restaurants such as Antico Noè, Empanada Republic, Fresh&Co, The Halal Guys and Playa Bowls and an Intelligentsia coffeebar and coffee carts throughout the hotel grounds. In addition to the lap of luxury is a rooftop infinity pool and observation deck with views of runway 4 Left/22 Right plus; the world’s biggest hotel gym:
a 10,000-square-foot fitness center operated by The Wright Fit and a Phaidon + Herman Miller Reading Room, where guests are invited to relax on mid-century modern furniture by Herman Miller while browsing Phaidon books. Museum exhibitions on TWA, the Jet Age and midcentury modern design curated by the New-York Historical Society offer an educational history on the company and aviation. The complex is also outfitted with vintage TWA memorabilia, David Klein poster art, sunken lounge with authentic TWA terminal-inspired chili pepper red carpeting, a designated TWA uniform collection and custom Solari board, among other elements. Excited TWA alums came out in droves, proudly wearing their lovingly preserved uniforms, to see the grand opening. Ready to check in? WEEKEND GETAWAYS from page 32A
West Point
We are all aware of the military importance of West Point and the large piece of national history it presents. What you might not know is that you can experience a lot of family-friendly activities while there. A guided tour bus for those interested in the history of West Point, and exploring Bear Mountain State Park for those in search of adventure. Only two hours away, West Point has something for everyone.
Cooperstown
If baseball is held in high regard in your household, you will find the perfect setting in Cooperstown— the birthplace of national pastime. Located just four hours from Nassau County, this example of the time-honored virtues of small-town America lives and breathes baseball. People from around the country flock to the now modernized and greatly expanded National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
Shelter Island
If you want a weekend to spend doing absolutely nothing, then Shelter Island is the destination for you. Accessible only by ferry, the island has 20 miles of coastline— harbors, inlets, creeks, marshes, coves, etc. However, before you get into it all, you should know that only three beaches are public: Wades (family friendly), Shell (secluded)
and Crescent (magnet for hipsters). Plus, it’s a short two hours away.
Hudson Valley
For families looking for a weekend filled with thrills and the full vacation package, the Rocking Horse Ranch in Hudson Valley is the choice of champions. With 500 acres of mountain views and a private lake, this resort offers
everything families might need to enjoy their weekend—from meals and evening entertainment to fun activities such as horseback riding, scavenger hunts, a water park, rock climbing, mini-golf, archery, full-service spa, magical shows and musical venues. Hudson Valley and all its beauty is located about two-and-a-half hours from Nassau County.
Adirondack Mountains
Last and the furthest on our list of weekend getaways for families on Long Island, The Adirondacks offer a unique thrill for mountain climbers—46 peaks more than 4,000 feet. Although there are more than 300 miles between Long Island and the Adirondacks (about a five-hour drive), just the number of picture-perfect lakes and streams will be worth the trip. Check out the camps in Upper Saranac Lake. Truman Scott is a travel and freelance writer, with years of experience writing for different companies and niches. INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND Beef industry
ARIES (March 21-April 19). The only people who care about how hard the work is are the ones who might be saddled with the job. For the rest, it’s all about how they are affected by the work. If you have a choice between working hard or getting the same result in an easier way, there’s no glory in needless toil. Work smart, not hard. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). “Look alive,” is the joke between co-workers when the boss comes around. There’s something in that for you. You want to inspire the people around you to bring a more vibrant version of themselves to the task at hand. Use both your example and your humanity for the job. It takes an emotion to open an emotion. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Your day has structure, but long-term projects don’t find their way in your schedule as often as they need to in order to get accomplished. Progress will continue to be sporadic until you simply decide when you’re going to be finished. Pick a day to put it out in the world, preferably publicly. It takes a sense of urgency to get big things happening. CANCER (June 22-July 22). This course of action you’re considering needs to come out of the mental realm; it’s done all it can do there. The risks have been weighed, the potential rewards calculated, but even the most psychic person would be unable to successfully predict the outcome here. You just have to jump in and see. It’s time! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). People just aren’t listening to your plan. By no means should you take this personally. Does your solution require that they change? Yes. Do they want to? No. What people will respond to is the answer that will allow them to carry on as they were. Don’t give up. Experiment instead. Try louder. Try softer. Try humor. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It’s the same in life as it is in weather. Most storms occur along the fronts, where the cold air meets the warm air. This week brings the excitement and beauty of atmospheric changes due to temperature differences. And the “temperature” in question is a matter of mood, personality and worldview. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Clear the calculator, reset the timer, reboot the hard drive, and lock the distraction device away where it can no longer tempt you. This is how you’ll focus on what matters. Your success depends on your ability to compartmentalize, organize and prioritize the multitude of things going on in your life this week. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Remember when you knew someone was terrible for you but proceeded anyway? In your defense, things weren’t terrible all of the time. It was a social gamble, and there were reasons for thinking the situation might work in your favor. In a sense, it did... because you won’t repeat the same mistake this week. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Embrace a team mentality, even when operating in a small familial group or working alone. You’re never really alone. Whatever is helping you get there is part of “team you,” including the voice of your own thoughts. Vet every member to make sure you have the support and loyalty you so deserve. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Everyone has a range in which they can offer assistance and expertise. To overreach your range is a mistake. It’s better to execute on a small promise than to commit to something you can’t finish. A job that is almost finished isn’t. Be a closer so you can claim your prize. Only start what you can end. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You’ve never been able to just do the bare minimum to keep things status quo. Maybe you sensed that the bare minimum wouldn’t accomplish that. Things are always either growing or diminishing. The bare minimum diminishes. You’ll get a glimpse of what could be, and you’ll grow toward it. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Sure, it’s nice to improve in any way, but why should you become better at doing something you hate or serving an interest or person you don’t enjoy? You want to move the needle in a particular way. Prioritize and strategize. Then guard your time and energy so others aren’t tempted to snag it.

ill River Road, the long and winding road that splits from Northern Boulevard just south of Oyster Bay, is one of those quintessential tree-lined stretches on Long Island’s North Shore: There are times you aren’t quite sure where you’re going, but you’re likely to
enjoy getting there. And back in 1989, any eaters seeking a destination restaurant would find Mill River Inn and its rising-star chef Michael Meehan. Since then, the restaurant has shifted tastes and owners, while Meehan has made his way through a journey of his own. He’s elevated cuisine at restaurants across the island, like Sea Cliff’s traditional Tupelo Honey, Huntington’s punk-rock burger bar Vauxhall, and

Mason Jar desserts close out the meal. many more. And now, nearly three decades later, Meehan finds himself back on Mill River Road with River Road American Bistro. As the name suggests, the restaurant serves new American cuisine in a bistro setting, with chef-driven recipes that utilize farm-friendly ingredients and ocean-fresh catches for creative, yet easily approachable dishes on a menu that keeps its options tight and concise. And the restaurant’s palette of ingredients extends from Brooklyn to Montauk, as the chef regularly features local, artisan food, beer, wines and spirits. Before you scoff at the notion of artisanal ingredients as mere lip service, sit down and order a cocktail from the impressive bar, River Road’s stately centerpiece. The fresh and fortified cocktails include the Spring Fling, with black cherry vodka, limeade and sparkling rose; along with the striking Out of the Blue, with white rum, pineapple, Blue Spiraluna and coconut. But to start off, listen to the bartender’s recommendation and order The Hombre. It starts with organic Mezcal and is at once sweetened and soured with kumquat, hibiscus and Low-Fi sweet vermouth. Staying with the adult beverages menu, you’ll notice that a vast majority of wines are from right here on Long Island, while beer—from tap to bottles to cans—come from New York and Long Island breweries like Oyster Bay Brewing Company, Blue Point
Brewing, Barrier Brewing Co. and Sixpoint Brewery. And once you’re sufficiently refreshed, it’s time to talk appetizers—specifically, “Snacks & Shares.” This list of starters includes a Pretzel Cheese Board, with smokehouse ham, smoked cheddar and an IPA beer mustard; Crab & Corn Fritters, with rémoulade sauce and pickled vegetable relish; and a steamed mussel pot infused with the aromatics of citrus, thyme and shallots. But the absolute must-order on the starter menu is without a doubt the Crescent Farm Duck in a Jar. Here, the chef serves duck-confit rillette in a mini jar, and surrounds it with pretzel bread croustades. The duck rillette, similar to pâté, is mild with a hint of fatty saltiness that is right at home spread on the crunchy pretzel bread. Share or feel free to eat it all by yourself. River Road also serves Potato Herb Flatbread “pizzas” with toppings like barbecue chicken and garden-fresh yellow tomatoes, baby arugula and fresh mozzarella. And as a sort of pre-entrée bonus, the chef prepares Housemade Cavatelli with chicken basil sausage, yellow squash and peas in sage brown butter. As for the restaurant’s salad offerings, you can’t go wrong with the spring-ready Brooklyn Bibb Salad, featuring butterhead lettuce, dried peaches, bleu cheese and sunflower seeds in a bright cider dressing. Now, before diving into the entrées, let’s talk about oysters. But not just any oysters—Pine Island Oysters. If there’s one oyster that should reside at the top of every ocean-to-table lover on Long Island, it’s these local pearls of the sea. Locally sourced in Oyster Bay waters, Pine Island oysters are large, plump and moderately salty with a sweet finish. At River Road, Meehan prepares them three ways: On the
Half Shell with Crystal Cocktail Sauce; Char-grilled with Tomato Absinthe Butter; and Cornbread Stuffed & Baked. When it’s time for dinner, River Road’s proteins deliver big bites with nuanced preparations. Among the choices are Montauk Tuna, seared with greens, tomatoes and ponzu; NY Steak Frites, a shell steak with house fries, red wine jus and chimichurri; Meehan’s signature Grilled Freebird Chicken, with roast farm veggies, fingerling potatoes and chicken jus; and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, with red mustard greens, pickled corn relish, and red pepper puree. But the personal favorite of this eater was the Smothered Berkshire Porterhouse Pork Chop. This meaty chop is indeed smothered in pickled peppers, vidalia onions, green beans and wild greens with a balsamic reduction. Spice lovers will embrace this dish, as those pickled peppers pack a punch that sneaks up on you. The chop itself is thick and served on the bone—perfect for picking up and eating with your hands for those hard-to-reach pockets of pork. And for a sweet finish, choose from three mason jar desserts. There’s strawberry shortcake with orange cornmeal biscuit, vanilla whipped cream and whiskey smoked sugar and a Smore’s offering with Nutella ice cream, graham cracker crumbs and toasted marshmallow fluff. But for peak refreshment, order the Aperol Creamsicle with naval orange sorbet, vanilla bean ice cream, blackberries and Aperol syrup, made from the classic aperitif. Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Minecraft BY CHRISTOPHER BIRSNER
E
CBIRSNER@ANTONMEDIGROUP.COM
very once and a while, a video game takes the world by storm. Since 2017, it’s been Fortnite Battle Royale, a game that earns an average of more than $100 million a month and has been played religiously by every millennial celebrity you can think of. Before Fortnite, however, there was Minecraft. A PC game created by Markus “Notch” Persson of Swedish game developer Mojang in 2009, Minecraft started out merely as a project inspired by games such as Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper. It’s set in a blocky universe where you are left in a randomly generated world of your own. In the initial version of the game, you were given a small amount of land to explore and had the ability to place and break blocks. However, the game evolved into a survival
simulator that included gathering resources and fighting back against monsters known as “mobs.” The game grew from there, with the addition of nearly infinite world generation and plenty of biomes, caves and structures to explore and the implementation of multiplayer servers. By the time the game left its beta stages and had its first official release in November 2011, the game had already become widely popular. Seven months prior to release, it was estimated that Mojang had earned €23 million (or U.S. $33 million) with more than 1.8 million copies sold. By November, it had reached 4 million purchases and 16 million registered users. Its popularity has left an impact on the gaming industry that we know today. The concept of playing games and providing commentary for videos known as “Let’s Plays” skyrocketed because of Minecraft, thanks to endless amount of content in the game or even content that could be added thanks to
modifications. It has been referenced in many games following its release and has even been an influence on some others, including the hit 2D adventure game, Terraria. There is even a yearly convention known as “MineCon” that brings together the Minecraft community to play and talk about the pixelated universe and its future. In 2014, Microsoft purchased Mojang for $2.5 million. Upon his company being acquired, Persson left to pursue a more quiet life away from the responsibility of being in charge of Minecraft. Since then, the game’s popularity has died down, but the game continues to

The Forgotten Team New book honors 1979 Stanley Cup Rangers squad
BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
N
ew York Rangers fans haven’t had much to cheer about in recent years. The last sniff at Lord Stanley’s Cup came when they fell to the Los Angeles Kings in 2013-14. For the Rangers faithful of all ages, the 1993-94 campaign, in which the franchise broke a 54-year championship drought and finally got to hoist the Stanley Cup, holds a rightfully special place in the heart of the fan base. And while no one who bleeds Rangers blue would disagree with that sentiment, for authors Mark Rosenman and Howie Karpin, the 1978-79 Rangers was a team that shouldn’t be overlooked, despite falling to a Montreal Canadians juggernaut on its way to winning its fourth consecutive Cup. Despite the outcome, Rosenman and Karpin felt strongly enough about giving this crew their due that they published Before 94: The Story of the 1978-79 New York Rangers. “We always celebrate the ’94 team, but not enough has been made of that ’78 to ’79 team. You can make the argument that if the ’94 team lost, that the ’78 to ’79 Rangers team would be the most beloved of all time,” Rosenman explained. “That’s very much the genesis of the book. We realized that not too many of those guys had passed. I had many of them on my radio show over the years, so I had a lot of contact information already. With all of that, it would probably be easy to track down every single guy that was still alive.” Rosenman, who currently hosts and produces SportsTalkNY on WLIE 540 AM, is credentialed by the NHL and covers both the Islanders and Rangers. Karpin has been a sports reporter for more than 30 years and has covered everything from the World Series to the Stanley Cup Finals. Between the two of them, the duo was able to tap into multiple contacts and come up with a chronological format that captured both the tabloid

The 1978-79 New York Rangers squad fare and behind-the-scenes drama most fans were unaware of at the time. Everything from the animosity between future Hall of Famers Phil Esposito and Rod Gilbert, the signing of high-priced Swedish free agents Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson to the naming of Dave Maloney as the youngest captain in Rangers history and the hiring of former nemesis/Philadelphia Flyers coach Fred Shero to helm his former division rivals. It was a thrill for Rosenman, who was a rabid 18-year-old Rangers fan growing up in Seaford whose favorite players included Don Murdoch, Nick Fotiu, Don Maloney and goalie John Davidson. Aside from Pierre Plante,

Tim Bothwell and Mike McDougal, Rosenman interviewed every living member of that particular squad for the book. And while his team was rightfully regarded as considerable underdogs in this Cup run, given the fact that Esposito was the only future Hall of Famer playing for New York versus the 10 the Canadians boasted, the reaction he got from the players was surprising for him. “The most surprising thing was how the players responded when I asked if in looking back, were they most proud of the fact that they overachieved or was there disappointment at the fact that they had that shot at the Cup [and lost]?,” Rosenman recalled. “To a man, they

felt they should have won and were disappointed that they didn’t. I would have thought that team would have had so much more pride than regret. But yet, they all had a huge amount of regret because they felt like it was their opportunity and they should have won.” Rosenman beams when asked what he thinks made that Rangers team so special. “It was just a magical season. The Mafia Line, with the two Dons and the Godfather. The two Swedes—Hedberg and Nilsson and JD just standing on his head. It was just an amazing year,” he said. “The players captured the city when the Yankees were winning World Series. The Islanders-Rangers series captivated New York in a way that no other hockey series did up to that point.” Visit www.longislandweekly.com to read a longer version of this story.
