Two Hours In Downtown Flushing One food writer’s quick sprint BY STEVE MOSCO smosco@antonmediagroup.com

T

his past June, I had a few hours to myself while my wife, Jules, was busy running a marathon at Citi Field. She was bettering herself with exercise, so I naturally used this as an opportunity to engage in my own brand of physical activity—eating food while standing on various street corners in downtown Flushing. This is the story of that morning. If you were to kidnap someone, blindfold them and drop them off in the middle of downtown Flushing without any context as to where they are or how much time it took to get there, it could be possible to convince them that they are, in fact, no longer in the United States. At times, Flushing, Queens, seems to be overflowing as

the overcrowded and choked streets teem with people all on their way somewhere in a hurry. And if you should find yourself among the crowd, it’s best to just let go and allow the wave of humanity to pick you up and drop you off wherever it pleases. Flushing’s greatest resource is undoubtedly its eating establishments. Tightly packed and found on every street in the neighborhood, the restaurants range from as small as the kitchen in a studio apartment to multishop buildings with corridors giving way to cavernous halls inhabited by one of New York City’s largest Chinese populations, restaurant owners know that they have to serve real-deal Chinese food in order to survive. And there are so many food stalls that it can

CHINATOWN from page 4A be a dizzying experience—especially in the summertime, when the threat of heatstroke caused by over-stimulation is a real danger. So, in the name of public service, here’s a plan should you find yourself spending a morning in Flushing with an empty belly and a few hours to kill.

8 a.m. If you’re a Long Islander like me, chances are you drove to Flushing. Some might direct you to one of the many parking garages or municipal lots, but since it’s so early in the morning, you’re likely to get lucky and find an actual parking spot. I know exactly where to go for a guaranteed spot, but rather than give it away and lessen my own changes of parking, I’ll instead give you a clue in riddle form: Where Roosevelt’s shoulder brushes against basketball courts (wink wink). OK, now that your car is safely in a central location, it’s time to go the rest of the way on foot and find your first snack. I’m a big fan of any eatery that can be described as a “hole in the wall,” and in Flushing, everywhere you turn there’s a wall with a hole in it with people inside yelling and handing out authentic

Left: Chili wontons from White Bear. Right: Spicy Pork dumplings from Yoz Shanghai. Chinese cuisine. Sheng Jin Eatery on Main Street is an ace in the hole, with red bean rolls, noodle soup, scallion pancakes and, my favorite, big, plump pork buns that are doughy and filled with smoky pork. Careful with that first bite, as these savory and sticky pockets are taken fresh from the steamer and reveal minced pork with an aromatic array of spices.

8:30 a.m.

9:30 a.m.

One of the best parts of being in Flushing is the feeling that you are constantly the lone newcomer in a room full of regulars—and also, no one speaks your language. Corner 28 on Roosevelt Avenue is loud, busy, confusing, full of energy and absolutely perfect in every way. The front window is lined with whole roasted ducks, chicken wings so shiny with honey-glaze that they are damn-near blinding, crisp pork belly, spare ribs and even pig heads. Even if you feel rushed into ordering, you’re still guaranteed to end up with a fulfilling meal, like roasted duck over rice with baby bok choy (and a bottle of water) for around five bucks. One bite and you’ll believe that not only can pigs fly, but they are called ducks. Crisp skin and luscious meat flavored with perfectly rendered fat, ducks truly are the pigs of the pond.

When you’re in the mood for lamb noodle soup, where else would you go but a place called Lamb Noodle Soup? Tucked away and seemingly hidden on purpose, it’s a bit hard to find but it’s well worth the effort. Also, it might seem like the server is actively ignoring you, but press on, for this is just how they work. Ask for the lamb noodle soup and prepare for a rich and hearty soup that will make you nostalgic for a childhood you never even had. The noodles are soft, chewy magic and lamb adds just enough barnyard to the broth. Add a dash of vinegar and hot oil for good measure.

9 a.m. Before descending into the basement of the Gold Shopping Mall for noodle heaven, the entrance off Main Street is inhabited by more than a few ships, including a couple of food stalls. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them, but the first dumpling stand on the right, Yoz Shanghai, offers some of the best spicy pork dumplings you could ever dream of eating. The fiery chilies mix with peanut oil for a spicy, peanut buttery mouthful that excites your palate as much as it confounds it. The heat will cause sweat to break free from your brow and you might invite an audience as you struggle to keep your composure, but it’s all worth it as the requisite bok choy is there to cheer you on.

10 a.m. And here it is, your final stop on your Flushing food adventure: White Bear on Roosevelt Avenue. The sign on the door says they open at 9 a.m., but they’ll let you in when they are ready. Just ask for the no. 6—a gleaming order of 12 thin-skinned, glorious pork wontons that glow with red chili oil and minced pickled veggies. These soft, sensual pockets might appear as though they are bathed in the fires of hell, but the ground chilies are far more smoky than incendiary, as the deep and bold flavors leave an imprint on your memory not soon to wear off. If you are too nervous to explore the tiny, dingy shops in Flushing, you’re sadly missing out on crucial pillars of authentic Chinese cooking, prepared by people who have maintained a decades-long passion for their cuisine. Downtown Flushing is accessible off exit 23 of the Long Island Expressway. All you need is an open mind, cash and a willingness to try new things.

hen most people travel to Israel, they leave with a transformed mind, heart and spirit. The Holy Land is known for its sacred sites, its variety of landscapes and unparalleled culture. But when Brian Marks took his first trip to Israel after diving into his Jewish heritage and studying Kabbalah, he left with not only a revitalized sense of self, but with an idea for a new haircare brand—My Israel’s Miracle. Seven trips to Israel later and Marks has just released his years-in-the-making brand. Shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant, an oil treatment, leave-in conditioner and a mask comprise the six-product line. With his trademarked Israelceutical Complex, My Israel’s Miracle contains ingredients sourced from Israel like pomegranate, myrrh, frankincense, cumin, hyssop, cinnamon, cassia, argan oil and water from the Ein Gedi nature reserve to bring the healing powers of all Israel has to offer to those who use the products. “My Israel’s Miracle has to do with, yes, the passion I have for Israel, but also that we want to bring great things about Israel out in the public,” Marks explained of his brand, which supports the charity United Hatzalah of Israel, a network of more than 5,000 volunteer medics who provide free emergency medical

services to all citizens regardless of race, religion or nationality. “We’re into saying some of the most iconic things in the world come from Israel. Beyond religion, you just know you’re in a very special place.” The cruelty-free products, which are available through Amazon, were meticulously designed to not only bring out the best in your hair, but also to revolutionize your haircare experience. “We’re looking forward to people enjoying the product and getting great results,” mused Marks, who is also the entrepreneur behind his previous brands African Pride, Dr. Miracles, All Ways Natural and Ginseng Miracle, which have surpassed $1 billion in retail sales. “We’re looking forward to people taking the fact that they’re washing their hair or conditioning their hair and saying, ‘wait a second, I do feel that connected feeling, I do feel that energized feeling.’ It works like aromatherapy. So that acceptance of, ‘wow, this product I’m using can really have a deeper effect on me.’”

Suozzi: “Situation is Awful, and the System is Broken”

After visiting the southern border, Congressman is left disgusted

C

ongressman Tom Suozzi, along with 15 other House Democrats, recently participated in a Congressional Delegation (CODEL), visiting detention centers along the southern border, in McAllen and Brownsville, TX. The group toured and inspected facilities that are currently holding Central American migrants seeking asylum. The delegation also met with several migrant families to hear, firsthand, their experiences and what can be done to help. “My recent trip to the border makes it clear that this issue is incredibly complicated and has been for decades,” said Suozzi. “The policies and rhetoric from this administration have exacerbated the problem, permeating a culture of fear that forces many immigrants further into the shadows.” He also added that in working together, he and his colleagues must set aside partisan differences to address immigration or “the current humanitarian crisis at the border;” work to secure the borders in a smart and effective way; help to create stability in the Northern Triangle Countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras that account for almost 90 percent of current immigrants and protect the legal status of Dreamers and TPS recipients (with a path to citizenship) and their families with renewable temporary protection. “America is better than this,” Suozzi added. “I have worked on this issue since before I was elected Mayor of Glen Cove in 1993 and I will continue to fight for solutions consistent with our American values.” Additionally, Suozzi learned that only 20-30 migrants seeking asylum are processed each day. This provides an incentive for people to cross in between ports of entry and be apprehended and then turn themselves in to seek asylum. This, in turn, leads to their detention. Suozzi voted in favor of an emergency aid package and has faced criticism from local activist groups that charge it lacks adequate oversight. —Anton Media Group

Beach Bag Essentials Beach time in the summer is a dream come true, but not always for your hair. So this season, throw some beach hair essentials in your bag to keep hair looking and feeling good all season long with help from the high performance hair care brand Eufora. “For beachy styles, its best to apply a salt spray when the hair is damp, as this will allow the product to absorb better and produce a more beachy effect,” said Dana Hodges, Eufora National Trainer and stylist in New York City and Long Island. “You also want to look at a salt spray that still has some hydrating properties, as this will prevent the salt from drying out your hair. I

Attendees will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win one complimentary area of Jeuveau™, the newest wrinkle relaxer on the market.

love Eufora’s Sea Spritz, which contains a unique blend of algae, green tea and glycerin, which provides UV protection and repairing benefits.” For that dreamy, beachy texture without the heat of a curling iron, the Eufora Sea Spritz Duo (available in the full size and travel size) and classic Sea Spritz texture spray is the way to go. Get the tousled waves you’ve dreamed of to match your new one piece or adorable oversized towel. And no crunch here, just soft, smooth waves. And as the weather heats up, so do our heads, literally. With the heat of the sun comes dry hair and with ocean water, comes unmanageable tangles. This summer, throw EMERA Nourishing CBD Detangler Plus in your beach bag for the ultimate seaside haircare. Nourishing CBD Detangler acts

not only as a relief for knotty tangles, but as a heat protectant for hair. Hopping on the CBD craze, the CBD and avocado oils in the detangler are extremely rich in antioxidants, helping to protect hair from external factors like sun and sand. Special silicone blends work to help keep the hair cuticle intact, preventing tangles caused by waves and salt water, especially if you frequent the beach throughout the summer. And bonus, all EMERA products are vegan, cruelty-free and made in recycled packaging so you can feel good about the products you are using. Tanglewood Preserve Becom Dinosaur And Animal A

BY MAYA BROWN

O

n Wednesday, July 10, the Center for Science, Teaching & Learning (CSTL), a nonprofit organization with a mission to encourage science learning through hands-on STEMbased programs, held a ribbon cutting at the Tanglewood Preserve Campus in Rockville Centre for Long Island’s very own dinosaur and animal attraction. This program at the new WAC Lighting Hall of Science officially opened on July 15, featuring two attractions: Dinosaurs! and People’s United Bank Animal Adventure. “I think the attractions are both engaging and fascinating, and I am excited to see what more is to come,” said Marlene McDonnell, president of InnovateLI. According to Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, CSTL Executive Director, the theme

A display of a Hypsilophodon model dinosaur of the attraction is how animals adapt and survive, which is demonstrated through unique dinosaur models and live animals throughout the exhibit. As the attraction focuses on animal adaptation, it is highlighted by a 10-foot-tall model of a Struthiomimus, a dinosaur, which is covered in feathers showing the direct link between the dinosaurs of the past

and birds of today. “It’s amazing to have an exhibit like this in our very own backyard and it’s perfect for kids. As a former teacher, I would definitely bring my students here,” said Kathy Baxley, the Deputy Mayor of Rockville Centre. More than 150,000 school children and families from the New York region and beyond are expected to visit this

exhibit annually, as the center already gets about 80 kids every two weeks. The ribbon-cutting ceremony included state and local elected officials and business leaders. During the ceremony, Havasy shared that the exhibit is the only exhibit in New York State heated and cooled by geothermal energy, clean and sustainable heat from the Earth.

As of 05/31/2019, the Standard Interest Rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, FL, NJ and NY with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY); and for a Platinum Savings account in DE and PA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.05% (0.05% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.10% (0.10% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, then-current Standard Interest Rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. 2. Available in-branch only; you must speak with a banker to request the special rate. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 and requires a minimum of $25,000 in new money brought to Wells Fargo. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A penalty for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the special rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1., 2. Due to the new money requirement, new accounts may only be opened at your local branch and you must speak to a banker to request the special rate offers for both new and existing accounts. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be: • Combined with any other consumer deposit offer. • Reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable standard interest rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. WE LOVE OUR PETS

Chill Out

Treats to help your pets cool down this summer Self-cooling pad

BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

K

eeping our furry friends cool in the summer is no easy task. Even a jump in the pool or a run through the sprinkler can only quell the heat for so long. If you’re hot, your pet is probably hotter. During a heat wave like the one Long Island is currently experiencing, keep pets inside with the air conditioner on full blast and treat them to some fun and refreshing ways to beat the heat.

Sweet treats

We scream for ice cream and so do our pets... sort of. While most supermarkets carry dog-friendly ice cream like the Frosty Paws brand, try these homemade sweet treats that are super simple to make. For dogs, blend two teaspoons of coconut oil, two ripe bananas and half a cup of peanut butter in a blender. Pour into ice cube trays and freeze. You may want to consider a larger mold that way the treat lasts longer for your pup. For cats, incorporate some chicken stock and water and freeze into ice cube trays. Not only will this treat keep them occupied during playtime, it will taste delicious when they decide to eat it.

Sometimes a cold floor just don’t cut it. Gift your pet with a pressure sensory self-cooling pad that activates as soon as your pet’s paws hit the mat. A patented “green” pad technology uses a nontoxic gel formula to absorb body heat and reduce body temperature without water, electricity or refrigeration. Even better, after a short period of non-use, the pad automatically recharges itself, making it a perfect travel companion. Hand-washable or wipeable for easy cleanup. The Green Pet Shop Self-Cooling Pet Pad is available in sizes small to extra large from $19.99 to $67 on www.chewy.com.

Cooling bowl

Ice cubes are great treats for bite-sized refreshments, but give your pet a clean, cool bowl of water to stay hydrated during the summer months. A cooling bowl is a perfect solution to cool your pets off. Simply place the insert in the freezer overnight and place it back on the base to keep your pets’ water cool. This Pawslife 16 oz. cooling bowl is available at Bed Bath & Beyond for $12.99.

Mini air conditioner

This personal space air cooler and humidifier creates an atmosphere that’s clean and pure, cool but not dry. Arctic Air is the perfect personal air cooler and humidifier that is compact enough for any room in the house, especially if you have pets and want a little something extra to keep them chill. The space cooler uses evaporative technology by turning cold water—via a special filter—into cool, clean air. The KISENG 8W 12V USB Mini Summer Arctic Space Cooler is available for $50.99 on Amazon.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’re perfectly capable of being and working alone. In fact, you prefer it sometimes. You also know that on your own, you are not a complete system. When a relationship is supportive and exciting, it gives you energy. When it’s irritating, difficult, maddening, it still gives you energy. You’re better together. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). This week, you’re less like the naturally and brilliantly defended crab and more like the snail, half inside your house and half out, as comfortable as you are vulnerable. In this state, any number of things could happen. You could receive a message on the wind, learn a new pleasure or pain, or you could fall in love. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Without shadows, the world would be a whiteout. Our eyes could not make out any edges. Nothing would be distinct, or interesting or clearly seen. Contrast is absolutely crucial to understanding. Whatever shade you come across this week, notice how it helps you appreciate everything that’s illuminated. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You deserve a break, some laughs and a diversion from the routine. Your recipe for fun: one part good planning, two parts spontaneity and a dollop of accepting whatever messiness happens to be included in the moment. It will also be prudent to avoid costly pleasures and overly complex amusements. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). People who want to and are ready to grow will find a way to do this. You want to be a part of that. You’ll be an excellent teacher and nothing will satisfy you more than contributing to the joy of learning. While you’re not directly responsible for the success of others, your input will shape their destinies in some way. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Maybe the chance of success is higher if you believe you’ll succeed, but plenty of people throughout history have done what they never imagined they could. So don’t let such things as shaky self-esteem or a crisis of confidence keep you from going forward. Doubt if you must, but march on anyway. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Animal trainers know that it’s hard enough to train a relaxed animal, and if the animal is stressed, forget it. You can use these principles to have greater influence over your wilder instincts. Great powers of self-control will emerge for you when you’re in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere and/or state of mind. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Mistakes are inevitable. A collection of mistakes along the same theme is called a failure. A collection of failures along the same theme is called an education. Education leads to mastery, mastery leads to success. Keep going with full enthusiasm and with the knowledge that success is inevitable. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You got an education to do a job, and then, while you were pretending to know what you were doing, the real education began. Even though you’re now extremely competent, masterful even, you’re still learning. You’ll ask around this week to find out how others are doing it. You’ll pick up tips and tricks. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). It would be easy to dislike the one who seems be doing life so much better than most others, especially this week when such a person seems omnipresent. But since you find pettiness diminishing, you’ll rise above and try and learn from the shining stars, even if what you learn is that glamour is an illusion. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The tendency to lose interest in a thing before it’s technically over or before you’ve crossed the finish line is completely normal, especially for bigger projects. However, if it’s important, being continually interested is beside the point. Loyalty, responsibility and dignity are among the reasons you’ll keep going this week. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You don’t set out to find students, clients, followers or fans, but you’ll get them anyway because you’re doing something that matters to you and it looks like happiness, power and success. Others want in on that. There’s great opportunity to serve these followers you did not seek. Get help in making the most of it.

A Reunion To Remember Honor Flight Long Island holds veteran reunion

onor Flight Long Island will hold a reunion on Aug. 10 at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale to celebrate local WWII and Korean War veterans who took a free, early-morning May 11, flight for a one-day tour of their Washington, D.C. military memorials. They also saw the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier and were greeted by officers from their respective branches. The heroes landed late that evening at Long Island MacArthur Airport to a raucous welcome by the Long Island Bagpipe and Drum Band and to thunderous applause from hundreds of family and friends. Honor Flight Long Island (HFLI) is a local, nonprofit chapter of the national Honor Flight Network that organizes, hosts and pays for the biannual flights each spring and fall. As part of the day’s events, veterans and their guardians (volunteers who make the trips possible) fly to Baltimore-Washington International Airport, where a motor

Each Honor Flight trip transports 50 veterans for free, thanks to donations from across Long Island. They are accompanied by 50 guardians, next generation, able-bodied volunteers

who donate $400 (tax deductible) to offset costs. If there is no family member to act as a guardian, HFLI has a list of volunteers ready to step up for the privilege and donate the required fee. The Gala Honor Flight Reunion will occur on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the American

LITERATURE

Stuck With Sherlock The Life And Times Of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

BY JOE SCOTCHIE JscotcHie@antonmediagroup.com

“It’s elementary, my dear Watson.” Those words by Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle’s most beloved character, are ingrained in the literary conscience, right up there with “April is the cruelest month,” “You can’t go home again” and “Catch-22.” Holmes’ creator was a Scotsman who perfected the mystery novel. As with Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle—who would have been 160 this past May—had the good fortune to live and work during Great Britain’s long Indian summer of world dominance. The British novel was the gold standard in literature and Doyle’s popular tales of intrigue and suspense uplifted that genre considerably. Doyle was born in Edinburgh to parents of Irish Catholic descent. His father succumbed to alcoholism, which left Mrs. Doyle and her children destitute. The family settled in Lancashire, where the young Doyle was supported by wealthy uncles. Watching his father fail undoubtedly affected Doyle. He was determined to be a success. Toward that end, he was the recipient of a first-class education at Jesuit schools in both England and Austria. Doyle took the safe route, studying to become a physician. But the writing bug hit at an early age. By the time he was 20, Doyle had already published his first short story. Many more were on the way. They had to be. Doyle began his medical career as a surgeon for the British Royal Navy. Following that, he set up private practices in both Portsmouth, Southsea in London. In the British capital, Doyle worked as an ophthalmologist. None of his practices were very successful. Lacking patients, Doyle turned to writing fiction. Fortunately for the hard-luck doctor, the muse delivered Sherlock Holmes. Doyle wrote his first Holmes novel, A Study In Scarlet, during a three-week writing binge in 1886, when the author was 27. The novel enjoyed national distribution and received good reviews in the mainstream press. Doyle’s career as a novelist and short story writer was underway. The team of Sherlock Holmes and

It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the — Arthur Conan Doyle most important.

Dr. John Watson revolutionized the mystery novel. The unlikely pair steadfastly worked their way through case after case, never giving up hope and confronting life’s difficulties with good cheer. It perfectly fit the British ethos of the 19th century. All fiction is autobiographical or at least, the dramatization of real life people and events. Holmes was inspired by Joseph Bell, a teacher of Doyle’s from his university days

in Edinburgh. As with popular authors of his day, Doyle’s fiction was serialized by periodicals before making their way into book form. The Sherlock Holmes character was a sensation. His creator, however, grew tired of the man. Within five years of introducing him to the British reading public, Doyle was ready to kill off Holmes. “I think of slaying Holmes... and winding him up for good...He takes my mind from better things,”

the novelist wrote his mother in 1891. Mrs. Doyle strenuously objected to her son’s idea. The novelist went ahead as planned, sending Holmes to his death in an 1893 short story. The British public, too, objected and Doyle was forced to bring the inscrutable detective back to life. If Doyle was stuck with Sherlock Holmes, the least he could do was make money off of him; which Doyle succeeded in doing. He raised the prices publishers would pay for a new Holmes tale. Doyle originally thought that would discourage publishers, allowing him to finish off Holmes. The opposite

happened. Publishers were willing to pay more for each new Holmes story. The novelist knew a winning card when he had one. Doyle was a versatile man. An accomplished athlete, he played football as a goalkeeper for Portsmouth Association Football Club, while starring as a star cricketer for the Marylebone Cricket Club. In fact, Doyle excelled at every sport he

tried. He was an amateur boxer, who considered refereeing the 1909 James Jeffries–Jack Johnson heavyweight championship fight. A competitive golfer, Doyle was elected captain of the Crowborough Beacon Golf Club in Sussex. As with, say, Ernest Hemingway and prize fighting, fishing and hunting or John Updike and the latter’s own daily game of golf, Doyle happily combined the life

of the mind with physical exercise. Doyle’s fame occasionally took him away from the fiction patch and into politics. He wrote two books defending Britain’s involvement in the turn-of-the-century Boer War between that island nation and South Africa. He twice stood as a candidate for Parliament as a candidate for the Liberal Unionist Party. Still a licensed physician,

Doyle dabbled in freemasonry and spiritualism. He fathered five children with two wives. Late in his life, he designed mansions, temples and golf courses. Was there anything Sir Arthur Conan Doyle couldn’t do? The man was bored with Sherlock Holmes, but that beloved character was the key to a long and eventful life for his creator. And that’s elementary, as anyone can see.

Growing Up Yogi’s Son Dale Berra writes about being the son of a legend

BY CHRISTOPHER BIRSNER cBirsner@antonmediagroup.com

ogi Berra is one of the most iconic names in baseball. But while his achievements on the field and in the spotlight have been well-documented, Berra’s life as a parent has never been a major subject. Dale Berra, former MLB infielder and the youngest of Yogi’s three sons, thought it would be a good idea to write about his father from his perspective. “He fathered the way he played the game of baseball,” said Dale. “He was completely innate and intuitive. He was so secure in himself and yet humble. That’s exactly how he raised my brothers and me, with a sense of ‘we’re not special’ because he didn’t think he was special.” In his book My Dad, Yogi, Dale talks about the importance of family and how Yogi put his before anything else. He also touches upon the aspects of his father that he admired, especially how he treated everyone equally. “He was totally colorblind in an era that it wasn’t fashionable,” said Dale. “Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella would come up to me and tell me that my dad spoke to them since day one and never thought a thing about it. He wasn’t concerned about what the other players on his team and other teams thought. He raised us in the exact same fashion. We didn’t know that was significant at the time, but it shaped our lives.” One of the memories that stands out most to Dale is the time his father helped him out of a struggle with drugs. Dale described himself as “obsessive and compulsive” as a kid. Growing up, he didn’t do anything more than drink a beer or two. In the 1980s, Dale said all his friends were locked in the bathroom trying cocaine. It was around him so much that he eventually tried it, and then began using it regularly. “The fact that I couldn’t stop was my brain telling me I was OK and rational,” said Dale. “In reality, it took

from me the skills necessary to play baseball at a high level. I hid all of that because of the values my dad taught me. I was never late for a bus or train. I never played while on it. My rationale was that I was OK and that I can use this drug without a problem.” Dale said that Yogi, even when he found out about the drug use, never worried about himself or his own image. He was only worried about his son. Dale would say that he was fine and Yogi would believe him. However, it did come to a breaking point and Yogi eventually staged an intervention. “When my dad spoke, my brothers

and I jumped,” said Dale. “There were no questions. All he had to do is look at you with his eyes and you’d know who was in command. At the intervention, he looked at me with his eyes and said ‘I’ve heard some things. If you want to continue to be a Berra, you won’t do that anymore. If you want to continue to have brothers, you won’t do that anymore.’ That’s all he had to say and that was the end of it right there. I’ve been sober for 27 years now.” The book dedicates time to describing Yogi as a father who wasn’t warm, but who loved his sons with

all his heart. He encouraged his sons to learn baseball from each other instead of from him as he believed it would help them develop as players. Dale also had a chance to play for his father on the New York Yankees, albeit for a brief moment in time. Beyond baseball, Dale talks about how the lessons his father taught him affected how he and his brothers live their lives today. From Dale’s early years to Yogi’s final years, My Dad, Yogi looks to celebrate a baseball legend as the great father he was. “People used to scream from the stands ‘You’ll never be as good as your old man,’” said Dale. “You know how I would answer that? I gave them an OK sign and said ‘Well, not many will.’” My Dad, Yogi is available now on Amazon and anywhere books are sold.
