Familiar Voice Stars In New Primetime Sitcom
Indebted pokes fun at parenting, boundaries and the lack thereof BY JOSEPH WOLKIN
jwolkin@antonmediagroup.com
T
he unmistakable, highpitched, raspy voice is back. Fran Drescher is taking over NBC with the premiere of Indebted last week. “I haven’t worked on a series in seven years,” Drescher said. “Now, I’m back in the saddle again and I feel very blessed to be on a major network.” The Queens native, who was nominated for a pair of Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, is back in what she describes as the perfect role. Indebted, NBC’s newest sitcom, prides itself on being comedic gold. The show centers around Drescher, who plays Debbie, and her husband Stew, played by fellow Queens native Steven Weber. This Jewish family has a rough time after losing their fortune. They end up broke and need somewhere to live. In their early 60s, what will they do? Their son, Dave (Adam Pally), and his wife, Rebecca (Abby Elliott), have a stunning home, perfect for Dave’s parents to go to, right? Well, not so fast. It takes plenty of convincing within the first episode of Indebted by Debbie and Stew to convince their son and daughter-in-law to allow them to stay. “I play a mom and grandma,” Drescher said. “I think I’m breaking the stereotype of the typical character. Steven and I play a couple that’s madly in love, very sexy, very sexual, joyful and youthful people, making it a role reversal because our son is more of the parent than we are. “There are a lot of ladies who are 60 and still feel hot and attractive,

and they’re a force to be reckoned with. Even though they’re not children [they’re] older and may have children of their own, they have a lot more going than just that, and I don’t think that’s been represented. I’m excited that, at this age, I’m representing a character in a fresh, new, youthful, joyful, good-spirited way.” So Drescher, in her first series since Happily Divorced (2011-13), attempts to do exactly that. Dave is eventually convinced to let his parents live with him, even though he knows it means no more privacy for a couple whose children are just starting school. Unlike shows that portray an older couple intruding on their kin, Indebted is quite different,
Drescher explained. “Not everything is mean-spirited or people being obnoxious, where they’re a pain in the a*s,” she said. “The elders live with the main couple. Take King of Queens, for example. The father was obnoxious and he was just annoying. That’s a typical representation of the elder of the multi-generational family in sitcom. That’s not what we’re doing, and that’s fresh and appealing to me.” Drescher’s accent often stands out in the show, portraying her just like she was in the The Nanny, a funny, Jewish New Yorker. Her chemistry with the cast is phenomenal, coming together naturally as the first few episodes progress. And Jessy Hodges, who plays
Dave’s sister Joanna, gets involved in the family drama as well. Debbie and Stew have few boundaries, even though they don’t come across as necessarily annoying parents. At times, they try to be the parents for Dave and Rebecca’s children, making for some incredibly hysterical moments. Indebted, which was created by Dan Levy and co-executive produced by Doug Robinson, Allison Greenspan and Andy Ackerman, was originally supposed to be called “Uninsured” when it was given the green light to go to pilot a year ago. But how did Drescher, who hasn’t been on a series in years, get involved in this one? “I actually was about to go out and start pitching an idea of my own, which is normally the way I generate a series when I get excited about an idea,” she said. “Then, this fell in my lap. My manager called and said it’s a project that’s further along, it’s green-lighted to go to pilot, it’s NBC, it’s Sony, which is my parent company for The Nanny, and they said the character in the script can be described as Fran Drescher.” Debbie did have to change a bit to fit Drescher’s persona, she explained. As the series began to roll out, her role evidently increased. She is seen as something different. “I hope people fall in love with the family, want to come back and watch the show mature,” Drescher said. “It has all of the earmarks of a show that’s winning, starting with a cast that I think has great chemistry.” Indebted airs every Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on NBC.

Unfortunately, Drescher won’t be playing the lead role in the musical, which she said won’t hit a Broadway stage for at least “a couple of years.” However, the play is “taking a really wonderful, healthy, exciting shape.” While the finer details of the The Nanny in a musical format have yet to be announced, Drescher described how she and Jacobson came up with this new project. “I wrote a children’s book called Being Wendy, and I said, ‘Don’t you think that would be a good, family Broadway musical?’” she explained. “He said, ‘If we’re going to do a Broadway musical, we should do it as The Nanny.’ It was like ding, ding, ding. The next call I made was to Sony, and we’ve been working on it ever since.” The ironic part of the announcement, Drescher explained, is that fans never had a chance to see Mr. Sheffield’s work on Broadway. All they could witness were his arguments with his main competitor, producer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Now, lovers of The Nanny will get to see what Drescher said is a natural progression of the show. “It just feels like the show is a musical waiting to happen,” Drescher said. “It’s larger than life. The thing about a musical is, when the words aren’t enough for the emotions, they break into song. When the song isn’t enough for the emotions, they break into dance. The Nanny series has been waiting for two decades to break into song and dance.” To read more about Drescher’s charitable efforts, see page 33A 33A.

MUSIC Fitz and the Tantrums are coming to The Paramount on Feb. 18.
They Got All The Feels Fitz and the Tantrums’ Michael Fitzpatrick talks new album and tour BY ANTHONY MURRAY
amurray@antonmediagroup.com
M
usic has always been a true calling for lead singer of the band Fitz and the Tantrums’ Michael Fitzpatrick. The calling that Fitzpatrick decided to answer has catapulted himself and his fellow band members into the spotlight for more than a decade and is still going strong. “If you have music in your bones, you just have to do it,” Fitzpatrick said. “For me, if I’m not musical on a daily basis, I just don’t feel right in my head or right with the universe. It’s always kind of been that way since I was a little kid and then I went to a high school for the performing arts where I started music. I thought I might want to try something else and tried to get a film degree and I realized that I still loved music more than anything and was lucky enough that it actually worked out and that I can make a living from doing it.” Writing a couple of songs off the heels of a bad breakup, which Fitzpatrick said is a great catalyst to write music, he sent his friends some demos to see what they thought. Their response was positive. “It was pretty easy getting the whole band together, which is not usually the case, but this was five phone calls and I had a band together,” Fitzpatrick said on how Fitz and the Tantrums came to be. “We went into a rehearsal space and we played one song where we sounded like we’ve been playing together forever. I was so blown away that I walked out of the room and booked us a show at this famous spot called the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. We played our first show a week later and we kind of haven’t stopped touring since. The response was phenomenal and we got these amazing opportunities to open up for Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and Maroon 5. That really put us on the national map and we’ve just kept going. Now, it’s 11 years later,
which is hard to fathom sometimes.” The band released their fourth studio album, All The Feels, late last year. The 17-song album focuses on a wide range of emotions from joy to anxiety to depression and has spawned hit singles “123456,” and “I Just Wanna Shine.” “I think you have to write from an honest truthful place for a record,” Fitzpatrick said. “The songs really need to have a connection with people and for yourself because at the end of the day you write music almost like a therapy to your own heart and head. For me, this record was trying to be real and talk about all the things from joy to anxiety to bouts of depression, yet people know our music to be uplifting and fun that makes you want to dance. When we were trying to figure out what the name of this record was, as soon as we wrote the song ‘All The Feels’ it was just obvious that it was going to be the title of the record because it encapsulated what this album was about for us.” And with a new album also comes a brand new tour. Fitz and the Tantrums will be touring the next couple of months across North America where one of those stops is right on Long Island when they come to The Paramount in Huntington on Feb. 18. “Anybody that has seen us knows that we put on a super high energy show,” Fitzpatrick said. “If you’ve come to our show it’s not to stand still. We love to go crazy and we love to involve the audience and make them

the seventh member of the band. The more that we get to the audience, the more it gets back to us and it becomes this crazy pressure cooker of energy. If we can give people an hour and a half break from their day and be given permission to let their hair down and go a little crazy, even if they’re the worst dancer in the world, to get their groove on with us and bring a little joy to their day to escape the grind of how stressful life is for anybody, then we achieved our goal.” One of the songs that fans can expect to hear the band perform live is the upbeat positivity anthem “123456,” which Fitzpatrick said came together pretty quickly when writing it. “That song was so much fun,” he said. “I was working with K. Flay, who is another artist and a friend of ours, Tommy English, who produced it. It was just one of those moments where I was like half way or three quarters through writing the record and you’re so deep in it, you don’t know up or down anymore and you don’t know if anything you’re doing is good. You just have no more clarity. It was great working with K. Flay because she had just finished her record and she knew exactly the headspace that I was in. We just spent the first hour hanging out and talking about that and then we came up with this little groove that was making us all dance in the room and it just flowed so easy from there because that’s what that song is really talking about. It’s
that moment where you wake up and you’re feeling confident and you’re just going to try your best to hold on to that moment for as long as you can because you know that moment is fleeting.” In terms of Fitzpatrick’s favorite song to perform live when out on tour, it’s hard for him to choose. “For me, obviously ‘Handclap’ has been our biggest song that we’ve ever had,” Fitzpatrick said. “The reaction is great, but I would say ‘All The Feels’ for me is a song that really gets me very emotional every time we perform it. I love singing it and maybe because it’s one of the deeper cuts on the record, it hasn’t been on the radio yet and people might not know it as well. I enjoy so much the experience of performing it and seeing people really connect with the song.” The band is pretty busy this year since they are also touring Europe and Asia after they finish their North American stint. “We’re always writing songs trying to put them in the bank for the future,” Fitzpatrick explained. “Our main mission once we write a record and the joy that we derive most, is putting it out there and playing. We toured all summer, we’re touring now, we’ll go back out this summer and we’re going to Europe in the spring, we’re going to Asia probably in the fall. What we do is so not 2020. It’s very analogged. We can only play one show at a time at one place and yet that’s so rewarding. There’s nothing like the feeling of playing in front of a crowd. So to me, I’m just so proud of this record and every moment that we can go spread the gospel of this new record, I’m all in.” Fitz and the Tantrums will be performing on Feb. 18 at The Paramount in Huntington. This one is as old as 1837, when Danish author Hans Christian Andersen penned the fairy tale. Adapted for Broadway in 2008, The Argyle Theatre in Babylon Village is putting on a production of The Little Mermaid, the beloved musical with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and book by Doug Wright, through Feb. 23. Kimberly Immanuel is the lucky actress selected to play Princess Ariel. “I idolized Ariel,” she said. “I drove my mom crazy singing the ‘ahs’— she’ll say it ’til this day. COLUMN In my August 2019 column titled “Thank You,” I expressed my gratitude for the cancer researchers and practitioners who have been instrumental in getting me through the last 10 years of my life. As I explained, my cancer was responsive to treatment, but it was persistent and kept reemerging. Since that piece was published, it was determined by my “team” that I was eligible for an allogeneic stem cell transplant, which meant getting someone else’s stem cells to help rebuild my immune system. Although this is a risky treatment, it does offer the possibility of a cure, which routine chemotherapy and immunotherapy do not, at least not for my type of blood cancer. The team thought that given my age and overall good health and fitness, this was the best window within which to proceed. After considering all of the information with my family, I agreed. The transplant was

I spent three mostly difficult weeks in the hospital. The first phase was “conditioning,” in which I received high doses of chemotherapy and total body irradiation. Next came the transplant. The final and longest phase, which I am in now, is recovery. There is
the risk of “graft versus host disease”– the possibility of the new cells not only attacking the cancer, but other organs in my body—which is part of what recovery aims to prevent. Currently, I am vulnerable to many ailments and illnesses as I have the immune system of a newborn baby. It will become stronger over time, and eventually I will receive all of the childhood immunizations, which are now rendered useless. This is all background that leads to what I really want to talk to you about: my experience with the personnel involved in the transplant. The three nurses depicted in the photo, along with an attending physician (not pictured), presided over my stem cell transplant on Dec. 12, 2019 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. At the time of transplant, I asked them a little about themselves. Among the three nurses are a Muslim, Christian and Buddhist. The attending physician is Hindu. I am Jewish. There are racial and ethnic differences as well. I teared when I said, “With all that is happening in the world, all of the hate, you represent the truth about the value of diversity.”
With their permission, I snapped this photo with my cell phone from my hospital bed. Amid the rampant and unrelenting stories of hate, this is a graphic reminder that diversity is our strength. The Ultimate Betrayal: How I Was Ghosted By A Dating Site
In our last email exchange, he got back to me the following day. That’s the same as the exchange from two sets of messages ago. That’s our pattern. I email, 24 hours passes and he responds. I should get my email today. Refresh and still nothing. After an unsatisfying deep dive into various social media accounts, I finally face it; I’ve been ghosted. However, this time there’s a weird twist. That’s because rather than being cast aside by a potential romantic partner, I’ve been shafted by the site itself; Yes, I’ve been ghosted by a dating site. The Research While ghosting is a common term in the popular media, it hasn’t received as much attention in the academic realm. Recently, a 2019 study by LeFebvre, Allen, Rainey, Garstka, Wilms and Parrish examined 99 participants who had familiarity with the phenomenon, either as an initiator or on the receiving end of this disastrous exit strategy. Participants noted that it was a withdrawal or avoidance strategy, and they understood it was undesirable. So why do people do it? The study found five themes when it came to ghosting: convenience,
LOVE LESSONS Marisa T. Cohen, PhD attractiveness, negatively valanced interaction, relationship state and safety. In terms of convenience, people note that ghosting is a practical relationship dissolution strategy. Regarding attractiveness, the research highlighted that people on a digital medium tend to have easily accessible dating pools. Therefore, when their attraction to a partner fizzles out, they can easily remove themselves from that relationship and move to another person. In terms of negatively valanced interaction, the initiators may disengage and withdraw when they experience behaviors from their partners that they find unfavorable. Rather than endure what may be a potentially toxic situation, disengaging can be the simpler and safer option.
Regarding relationship state, participants sometimes leave the relationship entirely rather than acknowledge a change in its status. Rather than verbally identifying the shift of a relationship from romantic to platonic, exiting entirely may be simpler. In terms of safety, self-protection and maintaining one’s own well-being are the primary goals when exiting the relationship. So it seems as if there are reasons to do it, some of which may be warranted, and others that may simply appear to be cowardly. Either way, it doesn’t change the emotional experience of the recipient of the ghosting. Ghostee? Person left behind? The Context You’re probably wondering how I became involved with a dating site, or rather by my account, how a dating site became involved with me before vanishing. I’m a relationship researcher, and while I have done a lot of work in the area of early dating experiences and online dating, I haven’t officially committed to a particular site. I’ve done some consulting work behind the scenes, but that’s where it ends. And then it happened. I got the call out of nowhere. They read my work,
knew who I was and wanted to work with me. Everything was going great until the emails stopped. I knew the potential for the perfect partnership was gone, but at a certain point, I felt that I would push them to tell me that to my face. But the “closure” never came. The Emotional Aftermath I don’t even know if it would have worked out or if we would have gone the distance. Perhaps part of me knew the site always had one foot out the door. I guess I should have seen it coming. I decided to pull back and stop staring at their Instagram page. Part of me still hopes that they also feel the absence of our union. Either way, I have decided to move on. The app may not launch; it may go on to be the most successful dating platform around. Perhaps one day, I’ll be surprised to find some closure in my inbox. Hopefully, by that time, I’ll be in a place to simply hit delete. Marisa T. Cohen, PhD, is a psychology professor, relationship researcher and relationship coach. Long Islander Catches Infection From New Puppy Nassau SPCA investigates source of sick puppies, recommends preventative measures
BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com
T
he Nassau County SPCA recently discovered a case of Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterial infection which causes diarrheal illness, in an 18-year-old male transmitted to him from a puppy his family bought from a Long Island pet store. He and the puppy became ill and were treated. In December, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced an outbreak of a multidrug-resistant strain of Campylobacter jejuni, with 30 reported cases around the country at the time. The Nassau County SPCA, a local nonprofit organization with no affiliation with the nationwide nonprofit ASPCA, has seen an increase in reports of newly acquired dogs needing veterinary treatment within days of arriving at their new home and cites finding cases of giardia (a parasite), bronchopneumonia and diffuse lower airway disease, which can be caused by bacterial infections, viral infections and other illnesses. In December, the SPCA seized nine sick puppies from a truck outside Shake A Paw pet store in Hicksville. All nine tested positive for one or more contagious diseases, and some had signs of airway infections and pneumonia. The CDC has linked the Campylobacter outbreak to pet store puppies, but Gary Rogers, Nassau County SPCA president, argued the situation is more nuanced. The truck that his team seized the puppies from were destined not only for pet stores, but also animal rescues and individuals from breeders. “I’ll equate it to UPS or FedEx,” Rogers said. “FedEx delivers all over the place and they don’t just deliver from one source. If you bought a dog yourself or a rescue group wants to bring any in, and a lot of these smaller rescue groups we have on Long Island don’t have the resources to go down and pick the animal up, so they’ll use a shipper to bring it here, who is going to load as many animals [as they can].” Like puppy mills, these animal transport trucks are not known for their clean, spacious conditions. “The [puppies] were contagious to other animals,” Rogers said. “They
Nassau County SPCA President Gary Rogers sat on a truck for two days in very cramped, close quarters.” Rogers explained that the sick puppies seized in December were detained from an animal transport company’s delivery truck. “They were shipped directly and seized directly out of the van,” Rogers said. “They did not come out of the pet store. In fact, a number of animals we took off [the van] were not destined for Shake A Paw. The only reason why it took place at Shake A Paw was [because] we knew the van was coming in, we had surveillance at other locations, and it was the store that came first.” Rogers added, “That investigation was in the works for a long time and still is ongoing.” The SPCA is trying to pinpoint the source of the puppies. Part of the problem, as Rogers sees it, is the number of animals being shipped to Long Island. “If you go to our town animal shelters, our town animal shelters are full of animals,” Rogers said. “Meanwhile, between pet stores and rescue groups, there are thousands of animals coming into Nassau County monthly from out of state,” and added that number could be as high as 10,000 or 15,000 annually.
Rogers explained why the Nassau SPCA does not publicize what pet stores, rescues and other locations seized pets are destined for. “We don’t want people saying, ‘well, I didn’t get it here so I’ve got nothing to worry about,’” Rogers said. “If your pet was on these transports, they have a possibility of being infected.” While Rogers’ personal feelings lie with the ‘adopt, don’t shop’ philosophy, his first priority is spreading awareness to new and future pet owners. “The most important thing to do if you get a new pet, because of the way these animals are shipped, no matter where you’re getting it from, you need to inquire where that new puppy or cat came from,” he said. “Look at the paperwork. Check when it got here, where it came from, who shipped it and, most importantly, after you make a decision, or the pet picks you out, either way, your first stop should be to your veterinarian.” New York State requires a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued to animals within 30 days prior to entry, but there is no mandated follow-up when the animals arrive. In the case of the 18-year-old, Rogers explained how waiting until the animal shows symptoms allowed time for the Campylobacter to infect a human. “Look what happened here,” Rogers said. “Somebody bought a pet. They brought it home. Two days later it was in a veterinarian’s office, half a day after that the son became very ill. Luckily, they didn’t have any other pets to pass it on to, especially an elderly pet.” Rogers added that vets do not necessarily test for Campylobacter as part of their standard testing.
“The vet needs to realize if they’re doing fecal tests, there’s an issue with Campylobacter and they need to test that,” Rogers said. “We need to have testing when [the pets] enter New York and we need to have a hold period for these animals when they get here. “For health reasons, I think that the legislature has to readdress this issue and see how they can correct it. There are various bills in Albany, but they need to take [another] look at it,” Rogers said, and encourages lawmakers to be proactive rather than reactive. One such bill recently passed through committee in the New York State Senate. Domestic animal welfare bill S4234/A6298, if passed, “prohibits the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits by retail pet shops [and] authorizes collaboration with entities to provide space to showcase cats or dogs owned by certain entities for the purpose of adoption.” Cosponsors on Long Island include Monica Martinez (NY-03), Phil Boyle (NY-04), Kevin Thomas (NY-06) and John Brooks (NY-08). The Nassau County SPCA holds special authority to enforce NYS Agriculture and Markets Law and all other state and local humane laws. It is a volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue, care and placement of needy animals. To report a newly acquired puppy that became ill and needed veterinary care, visit sickpet. ncspca.us or call 516-THE-SPCA (8437722) and report to the form at www. ag.ny.gov/online-complaint-form-petlemon-law. The CDC recommends thorough and frequent hand-washing as the first line of defense against Campylobacter and other zoonotic infections.
The Nassau SPCA recommends your first stop when you get a new pet is not home, but your veterinarian.

5 Best Toyotas To Ever Hit The Road BY JOSEPH WOLKIN
jwolkin@antonmediagroup.com
Toyota is known across the globe for its incredible reliability, endurance and power.
The Japanese automaker took America by storm in the 1960s, forcing the competition to step up their game thanks to the creation of the Toyopet Crown. The Crown made its debut in 1958, with just 287 sold in America out of the company’s new Hollywood, CA headquarters. To make the car appealing to Americans, Toyota designed the Crown to look just like the average sedan, but a drop smaller and somehow or another, sleeker. Consumers had the option of firetruck red, sky blue, forest green, black, iron gray or pearl. Founder Kiichiro Toyoda never imagined his vision would escalate to create a powerhouse amongst car manufacturers, but that’s exactly what happened. However, his father, Sakichi Toyoda, actually started producing cars as early as 1936, coining it the Toyota AA. Though the manufacturer debuted in Japan by the Japanese, the Toyopet Crown was an American innovation, one ahead of its time. It took on many obstacles, such as developing more horsepower compared to the Japanese version, which rarely saw high speeds. Its competition was faster, sturdier and cheaper. Eventually, through trial and error, Toyota became a staple in the American market. They pulled the Crown from American roads in 1960, returning in 1965 with the Corona, a small, boxy

5 Best Toyotas To Ever Hit The Road car that attempted to combine Japan’s advanced technology with the taste of American consumers. By 1966, there were about 20,000 Coronas on the road, according to Toyota. By 1968, the highly-popular Corolla took over the streets, instantly becoming one of the most purchased vehicles in America. That led to the start of Toyota’s incredible success in America, essentially changing the way that cars are not only produced, but marketed as well. Come 2020, Toyota leads the way in terms of sales, and the organization’s innovations continue to this day, with everything from sporty vehicles to SUVs and green initiatives. But what are the five best cars the manufacturer (not necessarily based on year, but by type) has ever put onto American roads? Toyota Prius The Prius first debuted in 1997 as Toyota’s first full hybrid, becoming the first of its kind to be mass produced. Ever since, the Prius has become one of the most popular cars in the world. A 2003 redesign brought it into the 21st Century, shying away from its original, awkward look on the road. The fourth generation, which debuted in 2015, brought on a refreshing look, increasing its sustainability as well. Now, there are multiple versions of the Prius, making it an optimum choice for those who want to purchase an electric or hybrid vehicle.

Toyota Tundra The Tundra is an absolute beast. This massive pickup truck, which was created in 1999, has somehow or another gotten larger over the years. Since its inception, it’s moved from a curved front end to a boxier one. Some of the newest features for the Tundra include larger door handles, a deck rail system, a tow hitch and better head restraints for construction workers who have a hardhat on.
(Photos courtesy of Toyota USA)
Toyota Rav4 The compact crossover SUV is also the first of its kind. It’s perfect for those who want to have the benefit of riding around in a SUV and have a better range of visibility. There’s additional cargo room in the new fifth generation Rav4, as well as a hybrid edition. The Rav4 is built for difficult terrain, which means it’s perfect for Long Island’s pothole-filled roads. The original Rav4 hit the U.S. market in 1996 with five doors, earning a reputation for its comfortability and handling in poor driving conditions.
2019 Toyota Supra The Supra returned to the Japanese automaker in the summer of 2019 after a 17-year hiatus. Believe it or not, Toyota is utilizing a BMW 3.0 liter, six cylinder engine for the Supra, in a partnership with Toyota Racing Development. The all-new Supra is small in size, but one of the most powerful vehicles on the road. It gets an astonishing 31 miles per gallon on the highway, giving fans old the old Supra an extra incentive to purchase this hotrod. The original Supra, which was on the road from 1978 until 2002, was just as awesome. see 5 BEST on page 20A

This next generation of Hyperion products are being developed with NASA to deliver some of the most advanced technologies on Earth. Hyperion will exhibit at the 2020 New York International Auto Show during press and public days, giving media and attendees a sneak peek into the future of transportation. For eight-plus years, Hyperion has optimized advanced electrolzyer, storage tank and fuel cell systems for reliability, low weight and efficiency. About 120 years ago, a group of enthusiasts in Manhattan joined together to showcase automobiles to a growing group of consumers intrigued by the prospect of owning a ‘horseless carriage’ and so began a journey to what is now the New York International Auto Show and the largest area for new vehicles sales in the nation. Today, the show is where car-buying decisions are made. In 2019, attendees spent an average of 4.75 hours at the New York Auto Show, up from four hours in 2018. As a comparison, attendees spend an average of less than four hours at other auto shows across the country. —Submitted by the New York International Auto Show

Above And “BEE”yond Applebee’s announces teacher essay contest
A
pplebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar announced the launch of its fourth annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which will recognize top teachers—as nominated by their students—by awarding them with a sponsorship check and end-of-year class party, courtesy of Applebee’s. The contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants on Long Island owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises. Applebee’s will award two deserving teachers (one from Nassau county, one from Suffolk), with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 2020-21 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class. To nominate a teacher, students must submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be “Teacher of the Year.” To sweeten the deal, students who enter an essay will receive a free ice cream certificate for Applebee’s. Contest submissions will be accepted at participating
Applebee’s restaurants through March 1, and winners will be announced on Monday, April 6. “We are thrilled to be holding our fourth annual Above and BEEyond Teacher Essay Contest at our Long Island restaurants,” Kurt Pahlitzsch,
director of operations, Applebee’s Long Island, said. “Our restaurants are committed to giving back to the local community, especially schools within the communities we serve. The overwhelming support from last year’s campaign reminded us what an integral role teachers play in building a better community.” Doherty Enterprises is committed to involvement in the communities it serves and is proud to support education year-round through its “A is for Applebee’s” program, which was created for teachers, libraries and scout leaders to use as an incentive for children to succeed and be rewarded. The program gives children an incentive to go the extra mile to help other students, read more books and make the Honor Roll. By obtaining the certificate from Applebee’s, children also gain a sense of accomplishment. Through this, and several other initiatives including donations, fundraisers, sponsorships and participation in community events,
Doherty Enterprises gives back to local causes, helping organizations grow and flourish. For more information about how Doherty Enterprises and its restaurants support local communities, or to get involved in one of the youth programs, visit www.dohertyinc.com/ community-connection. Applebee’s Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest entries will be accepted at the following locations owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises on Long Island. In Nassau County, people can enter from Baldwin, Bellmore, Bethpage, Elmont, New Hyde Park, Rosedale, Valley Stream and Westbury. In Suffolk County, people can enter from Bohemia, Brentwood, Commack, East Farmingdale, East Islip, Farmingville, Huntington, Lake Grove, Lindenhurst, Miller Place, Patchogue, Riverhead and Shirley. —Submitted by Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND
ARIES (March 21-April 19). This quote by Honore de Balzac will apply: “Nothing so fortifies a friendship as a belief on the part of one friend that he is superior to the other.” If you have to choose, then the inferior position will be better. If you don’t know why, then just try it. Life experience always shows small egos win in the end. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). What is the result you want? Focus there. The steps won’t be as straightforward as they look and actually may be irrelevant once you get a little further into this. Focus exclusively on the end, the bottom line, the thing you need. Then be open to strange things happening in the delivery. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Uncontrollable outside occurrences needn’t turn your inner world into chaos. Think of what you can control. List it and prioritize, and then focus on one or two things. Take action where you can and, suddenly, you’ll feel powerful. Feeling powerful is practically the same thing as being powerful. CANCER (June 22-July 22). The most successful people you know have been rejected more times than not. Rejection is a price of entrance for success, and those who know the circumstance well will wear it as a badge of honor. Ultimately, glory comes from taking chances, doing the risky things and going after what you believe in. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Knowing when to mind your own business is a pretty good quality, but knowing when not to is an even better quality. This will open the door to flowing attention to those who need it most. Also, excellent opportunities will come from talking with strangers, which is basically the opposite of minding one’s own business. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). People often reference being smarter than Neanderthals as a point of pride, not realizing that Neanderthals were plenty smart. People with bigger IQs tending to things that don’t matter make Neanderthals look like geniuses. Bright move: Do what it takes. No more, no less. Then call that enough. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). There are moments -- a stretch of dinner, a few seconds in a line, an exchange at home -- when you’re eyeball to eyeball with another. It fulfills a human need. It’s a gift, and it’s something to keep in mind as you go about your week. People on phones miss out on the rush of eyeball-to-eyeball communication. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It is scientifically proven that the sensual experience of being in nature beneficially impacts well-being. Of course. You are part of a system. Limiting yourself to a world without greenery is cruel. Do whatever you can to experience the whole of life. This is not a privilege or a right; it’s a natural calling. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Go to a wall in your house that has been standing for years and resolve to hold it up with all the strength of your body, soul and being. This exercise is both hard and pointless, illustrating that there is no reason to sell what’s sold, support what’s supported, uphold what’s upheld... go forward. Do new. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). When you’re into it, you put up with differing opinions, learn how to deal with strange mannerisms, try to appease the preferences of others. No longer wanting to do this is a sign that there’s just nothing in it for you. Honor your instincts. Pay attention to the signs. Go where life is ripe for the juicing. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). When you’re in a creative mindset, you’ll solve things quickly. That’s because there’s usually more than one way that will work, and your active mind, when left to its own devices, will gather the top choices available. You’ll wind up on a path that suits you and everyone else involved. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You’re a giver. You make it about them -- what they need and want. If you assume everyone is a narcissist and go from there, this week will be pretty smooth. (Everyone is not a narcissist, but the assumption will have you serving in a way that the good ones will appreciate and repay.)

In Abe We Trust Why President Lincoln matters
BY JOE SCOTCHIE

olidays in America aren’t what they used to be. Gone, it seems, are days when they told stories about cherry trees, log cabins and a barefoot boy who walked for miles on a dirt road to hear a politician give a speech. Today, holidays are highly political, full of bitter accusations toward a nation that continues to fail in its quest for equality. America is innocence lost. From the old America, Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12, 1809, survives. The 16th president always lands on the top lists of greatest presidents. Most American presidents are forgotten. Others get their one line in history (Franklin Roosevelt: Won World War II, Ronald Reagan: Won the Cold War.) Lincoln gets not one, but two lines: Freed the slaves. Won the Civil War. Lincoln stands apart. He is the major figure from the 18th and 19th centuries to have survived the culture war auto-de-fe of the past 40 years. In doing so, Lincoln gives Americans a connection to a lost civilization that they otherwise might not have. Other much-beloved icons have come in for a debunking. The Democratic Party, for instance, no longer holds JeffersonJackson Day dinners. Lincoln, too, has been targeted. A school for the man in Berkley, CA, was renamed. A Lincoln bust on Chicago’s West Side was vandalized. These are exceptions. Lincoln was a man born to the breed. Asked about making a run in the 1860 election, the former congressman replied, “I have a taste for it.” Lincoln was born on a farm near Hodgenville, KY, just 124 miles from Fairview, the birthplace of his Civil War rival, Jefferson Davis. An attorney by training, Lincoln served a term in Congress from 1846-48 before his legendary U.S. Senate campaigns against Stephen Douglas. In the highly contentious 1860 race, Lincoln prevailed in a multi-party race with 40 percent of the vote. If you think about Lincoln, think Henry Clay. Without Clay, no Lincoln. The latter adopted Clay’s positions on protectionism, relocation of the freedman and the spirit of compromise, at least when the war was over. After South Carolina seceded from the Union, mid-South governors urged the new president to avoid war at all costs. Lincoln truly believed that if the Deep South’s secession was successful, then
the entire nation might fall apart, the let ‘em up easy approach, but as starting with California breaking from a successful war president, Lincoln would have had plenty of political Washington. governance. Prior to that, only the U.S. Constitution was considered the nation’s governing document. Lincoln turned that agreement on its head. It was not until after World War II that the revolution took off. Lincoln, by our standards, was hardly egalitarian. Or as J. Alfred Prufrock would put it: “That is not what I meant/Not what I meant at all.” Lincoln, too, was a master politician. His presidency set the tone for the GOP for decades, especially on trade. As the protectionist party, the GOP dominated American politics from 1865 to 1932. When the U.S. zoomed past Great Britain as the world’s wealthiest nation, Theodore Roosevelt, president at the time, reportedly blurted out: “Thank God I am not a free trader.” London, with the Corn Act, set the pace for global free trade. A rising America would, instead, slap tariffs on goods that threatened American jobs.

Green Flag Waves On The NASCAR Season BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

he Super Bowl might have just ended, but the Super Bowl of motor sports is set to take center stage. The roar of 40 racecars is finally back. Come Sunday, Feb. 16, the NASCAR Cup Series will take to the high banks of the famed Daytona International Speedway for the Great American Race. Ever since the checkered flag waved at Homestead-Miami Speedway, champion Kyle Busch has been on Cloud 9. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver, though, has never won the sport’s biggest race. Now, he aims to finally break through at Daytona to have his name etched onto the Harley J. Earl Trophy. “It was just a relief and some excitement, as well as just knowing how much effort it takes,” Busch said of his second Cup Series championship. “You always dream of those moments and being able to accomplish them. Sometimes, when you do accomplish them, it’s a little bit of a shock at first. It’s pretty awesome to take all of that in.” The championship win in November was an emotional one for all of Joe Gibbs Racing. The organization started the year with the death of cofounder J.D. Gibbs. They won the first event of the year (the Daytona 500) with Denny Hamlin and went on to win a record 19 races throughout the season. Now, the team’s four drivers will vie for Joe Gibbs Racing’s second straight Daytona 500 win, an accomplishment that certainly wouldn’t go unnoticed. For Sunday’s race, JTG-Daughterty Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will lead the field to the green flag after winning the pole award. But the 2020 battle will have a major focus on the Rookie of the Year class, as well as the retirement of a future Hall of Famer. The Rookie Battle Back-to-back Xfinity Series champion Tyler Reddick will lead the

rookie class in 2020, taking over the No. 8 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. The 24-year-old won an astonishing six races in the Triple-A version of NASCAR last year en route to his second straight title. Now, he’s moving to the sport’s premier division with one of the most established teams in the sport. Christopher Bell, known for his tenacity on the racetrack and ability to compete for wins no matter what vehicle he races, will pilot the No. 95 car for Leavine Family Racing thanks to an alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing. It’s expected that Bell will be competing for top 10s most weeks, elevating this to become a prestigious ride. In 2019, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer had a breakout year, entering Victory Lane an impressive seven times in the Xfinity Series. His performance, though he didn’t win the championship, earned him a promotion to the top tier of the sport. Now, he’ll take over the No. 41 car and attempt to win its first race in nearly two years. Brennan Poole, John Hunter Nemechek and Quin Houff will also be competing for the Rookie of the Year prize, but will be racing with mid-level teams.

Jimmie Johnson’s Last Ride Few athletes have achieved the amount of success that NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson has accomplished. Not only has he won 83 races, but he’s earned seven championships, putting him into a category with only two other NASCAR drivers— Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. Johnson, 44, announced over the offseason that 2020 will be his final year as a full-time NASCAR driver. The news came as he entered the year in the midst of the longest winless drought of his career, spanning 94 contests. The legend has driven for the same team, Hendrick Motorsports, throughout his entire career. Though he hasn’t had much success over the past three years, that will not tarnish his legacy. Johnson is the most dominant driver in modern-day NASCAR, defeating his opponents and making moves in a racecar that few ever do. Former teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. said that, going into a turn three-wide, while most drivers in the middle lane usually back off, Johnson gassed it and didn’t lose control, actually passing both cars. Moves like that is how Johnson won five titles in a row from 2006-10. His determination to win is similar to that of four-time champion and the man who helped him land a Cup Series ride, Jeff Gordon. The two became best friends over the years, with Gordon preparing him for life in the spotlight. Now, as Johnson rides off into the sunset of his NASCAR career, he is ready to fight for his eighth championship.
