t was a chance encounter with Cher’s guitarist in Erie, PA, when Pat Monahan from the Grammy-winning, multiplatinum selling band Train decided to take a wholehearted leap into the music business. “I was performing one night in Erie at a club the same night that Cher was playing at the amphitheater in Erie,” said Monahan. “Her guitar player came in while I was performing and he was like, ‘Hey man. You have what it takes to be what the music business is.’ I’ve been waiting my whole life for someone to say that to me and when he did, it became clear that I was going to go to Los Angeles. So I did, and I met the guys that I started

Train with. Then, we moved to San Francisco and that was how it all started.” Within the span of 20 years, iconic songs from Train, such as “Drops of Jupiter,” “Calling All Angels,” “Drive By” and “Hey Soul Sister,” have been a staple in the music industry. The band has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, more than 30 million tracks, have had 14 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 list with multiple platinum/gold citations, including three Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards and dozens of other honors. Late last year, the band compiled 16 fan-favorite songs into their brand new Greatest Hits album and now this summer, the band is touring throughout the country with co-headliners

and Grammy-nominated rockers, the Goo Goo Dolls. The amphitheater tour will also feature special guest Allen Stone. Fans will have a chance to witness Train’s extensive and critically-acclaimed catalog of hits from over the last two decades. “It’s kind of fun because I’ve always been a fan of going to see music when a band plays their hits,” said Monahan about going back into the band’s catalog of songs. “I just think it’s more fun for people to sing along, so I’m just looking forward to doing that and providing people with an environment that I love when I was playing music only and not writing music.” Since he’s hitting the road with the Goo Goo Dolls and Allen Stone, Monahan said his favorite thing about

touring is the camaraderie amongst band members. “The entire part of our business should be revolving around camaraderie and people feeling lucky to have what we have,” said Monahan. “Who doesn’t wish they could perform music? That’s basically, in my opinion, what we’re there to do and I really love these guys that we’re touring with. I think it’s going to be a shit ton of fun.” Monahan, who is no stranger to playing shows in New York with the band, has one fond memory of the Big Apple. “We played a place [in New York] and we went there to sign a deal with Columbia Records,” recalled

We went home with our tails between our legs and it really was an ultimate bummer.” Monahan can also be heard on his radio show Train Tracks on SiriusXM’s The Pulse every weekend, where he plays music from emerging artists. “I feel like new artists need a place to go to find their way,” said Monahan about his radio show. “I don’t know, I just think it’s super important what I’m doing and I never really felt that way about anything before until now and I’ve been thanked by artists all over the world who say ‘Thanks for giving me a shot. I didn’t think I would ever get played and now I get to do this.’ It just seems like a cool thing.” Outside of music, Monahan and the band partake in other ventures with their “Drops of Jupiter” wine portfolio, of which proceeds from the wine support Family House, a San Francisco charity that supports families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. “Our song, ‘Hey Soul Sister,’ was

“They were like ‘Hey, the way we do it over here is that you find a charity because you have to give back. That’s part of the way we do it.’ So we’re a San Francisco band and they were like ‘We want you to start looking at some Bay Area charities.’ So we did and they have a rating system and Family House was absolutely flawless. They use their money for all the right things and that’s basically how it started. We just developed a great relationship with them and we sold millions of bottles of wine to help the charity out a lot and we just continue to do that.” From an early age, music was always an integral part of Monahan’s life who recalls his earliest musical memory that involved his father when he was just four years old. “I was coming home from preschool and my dad had a Manhattan and he was listening to jazz,” said Monahan. “I was probably about 4 years old and he was listening to ‘Take Five’ and he told me to come in and try to keep the beat because the beat flips. It’s kind of like ‘Hit the Road Jack.’ I was able to keep the beat and my dad was like ‘holy shit.’ That was my first musical memory.” Monahan and Train have big plans for next year, with Monahan saying that the band hopes to have a new album in the beginning of 2020. “I think maybe it’s also time to do a 1,000-seat theater acoustic tour,” said Monahan. Train, along with The Goo Goo

Pat Monahan’s Favorite Train Song Out of the many fan-favorite songs that Train has written and performed over the years, Monahan’s favorite Train song to perform is “Drops of Jupiter.” “Drops of Jupiter” is from Train’s second album, which was released in 2001. The album’s title is derived from “Drops of Jupiter” and won a Grammy-award for best rock song. “It’s hard to beat ‘Drops of Jupiter’,” said Monahan. “It’s such a massive part of my life and it means a lot to me. It’s about my mother when she passed away.” Dolls with special guest Allen Stone, will be at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater on Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. as part of their Summer 2019 tour. Goo Goo Dolls: Pop’s Blue Collar Heroes

BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

T

he Goo Goo Dolls may have established a comfortable niche, as a well-respected rock band with pop leanings reflected by the 12 million albums they’ve sold worldwide and much-loved hit singles, like “Iris,” “Slide” and “Name.” But as far as founding member/lead vocalist John Rzeznik is concerned, they’re never too far from their West New York roots. This blue collar mentality continues to be the guiding moral compass for Rzeznik and longtime friend/bassist Robby Takac. “We’re from Buffalo and we always carried that pride of the hometown that we’re from—and we still do,” Rzeznik said. With the band ready to hit the road with fellow alt-pop outfit Train, the Goos are preparing to also introduce fans to material from their forthcoming twelfth studio outing, Miracle Pill. It’s a collection of songs Rzeznik was working on just as he and Takac were coming off the road from a string of fall dates last year celebrating the 20th anniversary of Dizzy Up the Girl, the band’s sixth studio album. “I was already writing songs and collecting material for the record. The title and concept for the album just came to me at once. It hadn’t happened to me in a long time, but I just got hit over the head for Miracle Pill,” Rzeznik recalled. “It was sort of a metaphor for the instant gratification. Are you sad? Take a pill. That’s sort of the culture that we live in. Are you fat? Take a pill. Everybody is looking for some easy, short-cut way to find happiness and fulfillment and there just isn’t. But it’s work. It sucks, it’s hard and it’s consistent. I’ve been working out with this trainer and he said if I can be 70 percent consistently, then I’m going to be further ahead than if I’m 100 percent once in a while. There’s a line in ‘Miracle Pill’ where this guy asks this girl if she can be his miracle pill and I can be somebody else/I’m so sick of living inside of myself. It’s like trying to find something external that will cure you. And we all know that it’s an inside job.” In hitting the road with Train, Rzeznik admits that beyond the new album’s title cut, he and Takac are going to be giving fans just what they

Goo Goo Dolls founding members: Robby Takac (second from left) and Johnny Rzeznik (Photo Mark Dellas)

want—well-loved gems from the Goo canon. It’s even more important to do that given how long the duo have wanted to go out on the road with Train. “We’re going to play the new single when we go out. I don’t know how many other songs we’re going to play from the new album, at least this summer. Because we’re out with Train. You’ve got to play all the hits, when you’re out with a band like that. C’mon Monahan, try writing a crap song or a B-side once in a while,” he said with a laugh. “We’re out there playing all the hits. We’ve got a really bitching light show and we’ve been getting ready for this one. We all had to get back into fighting shape for this tour. It’s going to be a lot of fun, man. I’m really looking forward to it.” While most music fans might think of the Goo Goo Dolls as being a ’90s alt-pop band thanks to some of those aforementioned hits, the Goos were actually looked at as Replacements Lite (that band’s Paul Westerberg cowrote the 1993 single “We Are the Normal,” off that year’s Superstar Car Wash) and were actually college radio staples up through the early 1990s. The first decade of the Goo Goo Dolls’ existence found them sharing

bills with the Gun Club, Cannibal Corpse, the ‘Mats and a pre-breakthrough Soul Asylum. And while fame eventually came knocking, Rzeznik and Takac were quick to heed the word of an early advisor. “The first little bit of money that we made, was kind of weird. Robbie and I literally had nothing. We had a roommate, so there were three of us living together in an attic in Buffalo. We had nothing. All of a sudden, you get this check in the mail and it’s more money than my dad made in like 10 years,” Rzeznik recalled. “Then, our manager scooped us up and said, ‘Listen. This ain’t gonna last forever. Put the money away, pretend it doesn’t exist, keep your head down and keep working. Forget about being a rock star. Just keep working.’ That stuck with me. Then, there was the rule of [investing]—Don’t’ buy a bar. Don’t buy a restaurant. Don’t buy a Ferrari. We’ve been going for 25 years making a living doing this. This has been my job for 25 years, with no other job. For the 10 years before that, I’d play in the band and be a bartender. I’d play in the band and Robbie was a DJ. We always had odd jobs we had to do when we came home. I was very blessed because the local punk rock

club owner would always have my job waiting for me when I came home from a tour. It was really a blessing and he was so proud of us that we were getting out there.” For the immediate future, the Goo Goo Dolls will be heading down to South America with Bon Jovi after wrapping up their summer jaunt with Train. And while Rzeznik may have tasted multi-platinum success, he’s still grateful for previously untapped opportunities the Goo Goo Dolls are still getting to experience. “Going to South America with Bon Jovi is so exciting to me. I can’t believe Jon asked us to open for them. We’re doing Rock in Rio and then we’re going to Peru. We’ve never played down there,” he explained. “The last time we toured and opened for those guys, they were so good to us man. It was a cool scene. I’ve got to say that Jon is doing us a real solid because he’s helping us break open a new market that we’ve never been to.” The Goo Goo Dolls will be appearing with Train on Aug. 3 at Northwell at Jones Beach Theater, 1000 Ocean Pkwy., Wantagh. Rockabilly Rebels Return BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

I

DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

t would be easy to hang the term revivalist on the Stray Cats. When the trio broke on the music scene in 1979, the combination of their ’50s-inspired garb, hairstyles and affinity for ’50s-style rock and roll would lead the casual music fan to assume they were some kind of tribute band. But for stand-up bass player Lee Rocker, his trio’s ability to straddle the past and present is not only what gave the Stray Cats a unique edge back then, but continues to pump life blood into the group as they gear up to tour behind 40, the band’s first studio album since 1992’s Choo Choo Hot Fish. Rocker feels that this new collection of songs, recorded in Nashville at Blackbird Studios, captures that vibe perfectly. “The whole thing that we’ve always done is combine the old and the new in a lot of different ways. Blackbird is a great studio and it had a lot of the stuff that we need as the Stray Cats, which is tube

equipment, ribbon microphones and vintage gear. But also, Pro Tools, even though we run tape,” he said. “So we knocked [40] out in about two weeks and that’s also how we normally do things. How we record is very live, so we set up shoulder to shoulder in one room and not in an isolation room. We turned the amps up to concert volume and for the most part, didn’t even use headphones. So it’s basically like a concert. One of the unique things about the Stray Cats is that we’re a rock band, but we almost operate like it’s more of a jazz band. The songs aren’t written in stone—‘This is how it goes in this part. Play it like this or that.’ It’s really a musical conversation, so it’s very reactive.” Rocker promises that this discussion is something fans can expect to see more of on the road. “We will wind up rolling around the world at least once with this tour. One of the really fun things is sitting down and trying to decide what to play. We’re of course going to be doing the hits—‘Rock This Town,’ ‘Stray Cat Strut’ and ‘Sexy & 17.’ But we’re definitely

going to be doing a nice amount of songs off of 40 and really talking through the show,” Rocker said. “I’m excited because this is the first studio record in 26 years, so we definitely want to play some of this. For us, this is fantastic because we’ve got quite

trapeze, partner trapeze, lyra, silks and hammock are available. No matter what you choose to do at I.FLY, you are sure to experience something you have never tried before. First-time flyers can expect to learn about timing and technique when it comes to flying trapeze in their first session. At the beginning, there will be an introduction on the ground and then an instructor will give a demonstration in the air. After the demonstration, you get right to flying and practicing your form in the air. For returning flyers, the I.FLY instructors will teach you a whole new set of positions and tricks, while also helping you work on improving your current flying trapeze skill set. The flying trapeze program is very safe and well-monitored, according to the I.FLY website. All participants in the program fly with a harness, over a safety net and attached to safety lines being held by a trained

instructor at all times. Sessions are between one to two hours at a time and cost around $65 and up. Each session has five to 10 flyers in total and follows a format that will be completed regardless of the amount of time needed. On top of individual sessions, I.FLY has plenty of experience in dealing with large groups as well. The company has catered to troops, social groups, family picnics, corporate groups, birthdays and bachelorette parties. This summer, I.FLY is continuing

its program called Summer Circus for Kids, which is only available at the East Meadow location. For children ages 7 through 16, I.FLY offers an abundance of activities all compiled into one week sessions. Kids can participate in some activities such as flying trapeze, aerial trapeze, juggling, ground acrobatics and circus comedy. Each week ends with a show on Friday with all of the participants showcasing their skills in various disciplines. For more information, visit www. iflytrapeze.com.

August Movie Previews

The Kitchen (R) On Aug. 9, The Kitchen debuts, directed by Andrea Berloff in her directorial debut. The films stars Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Domhnall Gleeson. This movie is based on a comic book series of the same name written by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle. Fresh off her 2019 nomination for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, McCarthy once again proves she can do it all and is not limited to comedic roles. After their Irish gangster husbands get arrested, the wives decide they can keep up the business and their lifestyles. A must-see.

But hold up, for there are 31 days in August for us to go to the beach, pools, outdoor concerts and of course, the movies. The following are just a few films for you to choose from.

Fast & The Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (PG-13) Aug. 2 sees Fast & The Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw racing into theaters, directed by David Leitch and starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby and Helen Mirren. A spin-off of the ever popular The Fast and the Furious franchise, this story follows Hobbs (Johnson) and Shaw (Statham) attempting to put their hatred for one another aside so they can team up to stop a new threat from a cyber-genetically heightened terrorist, who, with his deadly virus, intends to destroy all of humanity. Johnson and Statham have unbelievable chemistry and this movie will have you cringing and laughing out loud at the same time.

Where’d You Go Bernadette? (PG-13)

Brian Banks (PG-13) Also, on Aug. 9, Brian Banks rushes into theaters. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the film stars Aldis Hodge, Greg Kinnear and Sherri Shepherd. Based on true events, the movie follows a promising athlete with dreams of playing in the NFL when suddenly everything changes as he is falsely accused and convicted of rape. Years later, with the help of the California Innocence Project, he fights to clear his name and fulfill his dream.

Appearing in theaters on Aug. 16 is Where’d You Go Bernadette? directed by Richard Linklater and stars Cate Blanchett, Judy Greer, Kristen Wiig, Billy Crudup and Emma Nelson. It is based on the novel of the same name written by Maria Semple. Bernadette (Blanchett) hates many things and has sacrificed herself for the sake of her family. When suddenly she disappears, her daughter, Bee, sets out on a mission to find out where she is and what happened. A delightful mystery comedy. Where’d You Go Bernadette? (Photo source: IMDb.com)

Angel Has Fallen (NR) On Aug. 23, Angel Has Fallen shoots into theaters. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the film stars Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Piper Perabo and Jada Pinkett Smith. This is the third film that Butler and Freeman are reprising their roles from the Olympus Has Fallen series from 2013

and 2016. This time, Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Butler) is wrongly accused for the attempted assassination of the president. He must go undercover and evade his own agency and the FBI to prove his innocence and uncover the real threat. Just as action packed as the two films before.

Don’t Let Go (NR) Finally, on Aug. 30, Don’t Let Go creeps into theaters, directed and written by Jacob Aaron Estes. It stars David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Byron Mann and Mykelti Williamson. Detective Jack Radcliff’s (Oyelowo) family has seemingly been murdered yet he gets a call from his niece, who was one of the killed, and must decide if heB:8.7” is losing his mind or if he has a chance to save her before it happens. 1. To qualify for the advertised APY, you must enroll your new or existing Platinum Savings account in this offer between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 by speaking to a banker and requesting the special rate. Offer is subject to change at any time, without notice, and is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DE, FL, NJ, NY, PA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 1.98% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the promotional interest rate period. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes all deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.00%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000, the enrolled account will not be eligible for the Special Rate and will instead earn the applicable Standard Interest Rate for a Platinum Savings account. As of 05/31/2019, the Standard Interest Rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, FL, NJ and NY with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY); and for a Platinum Savings account in DE and PA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.05% (0.05% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.10% (0.10% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, then-current Standard Interest Rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. 2. Available in-branch only; you must speak with a banker to request the special rate. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 and requires a minimum of $25,000 in new money brought to Wells Fargo. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A penalty for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the special rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1., 2. Due to the new money requirement, new accounts may only be opened at your local branch and you must speak to a banker to request the special rate offers for both new and existing accounts. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be: • Combined with any other consumer deposit offer. • Reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable standard interest rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. BOOKS

Celebrating The Caesars And Charlie Hustle, Too BY JOE SCOTCHIE

I

jscotchie@antonmediagroup.com

n Ten Caesars, classicist Barry Strauss takes the reader through the high tide of the Roman Empire: the 350-plus year reign, from Augustus to Constantine. These brief, Plutarch-like sketches capture the unique character of each of the Caesars: Augustus, the teenage strongman who defined the role of an emperor for centuries to come; Tiberius, who ruled in luxury, while several thousand miles south of Rome, a Nazarene carpenter changed the course of history; Nero, the homicidal madman; there is Hadrian and his wall, Marcus Aurelius, as popular as ever and finally, Constantine, who ended the 300-year long persecution of the empire’s Christians. Strauss lauds the Caesars for their survival instincts but mourns the passing of Rome and applauds the establishment of the Eastern Empire, which later fell.

However, the world of the Caesars led to the world of monarchy. A republic is preferable to an empire, but a monarchy is preferable to both. The Largesse of The Sea Maiden was the final collection of short stories by Denis Johnson, the prolific American novelist who died last year at age 67. As with Wallace Stegner, Edward Abbey and Chilton Williamson, Jr., Johnson sang of the hard-boiled West: working-class men scrambling to stay one foot ahead of the grave. Characters are constantly trapped in those do-ordie decisions that shape their fate. Johnson will be missed, but he left behind streams of fine fiction for the rest of us to enjoy.

Jim Sciutto’s The Shadow War recalls the 1950s when Russia and China were communist giants and the U.S. caught up in “duck and cover” drills over a nuclear attack by either or both. Times have changed dramatically. Russia and China are not in an alliance. Still, both challenge American hegemony, which looks to be in decline, anyway. Sciutto lists the usual concerns: hacking American elections, cyber warfare, espionage and bold military actions. Russia matters, but the rivalry of the 21st century is between the U.S. and China. When Mao Tse-Tung’s rebels took control in 1949, they

immediately embarked on a 100-year plan to make China as the world’s economic and military superpower. What will happen if China does overtake the United States? Another Pete Rose book? Why not? Has there been a major leaguer who loved the game as much as Charley Hustle? Rose is still coming to terms with his banishment from the game for gambling and the realization that he will never be selected to the Hall of Fame, at least not in his lifetime. Play Hungry: The Making of A Baseball Player is very much a love letter from Rose to his father, a legendary semi-pro athlete in Cincinnati. Not since Babe Ruth has a man put his stamp on the game the way Rose did. This book would be perfect for the budding young ballplayer, if not for the language, but this brisk volume is one of the best books about baseball that you’ll ever read. There will never be another Pete Rose.

This Summer, Go Blonde! Legally Blonde the Musical debuts at The Argyle

B

ased on the 2001 film of the same name, Legally Blonde The Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal! Elle Woods, the iconic character originally portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, is played by Aussie actress Kirby Lunn. “Legally Blonde is about a woman who gets broken up with so she decides to follow this guy all the way to Harvard Law,” Lunn said. “And by doing this she learns the gift of working hard, and that she’s so much more than she ever thought she could be.” Lunn first appeared on the Argyle stage as Amber Von Tussle in last year’s production of Hairspray. Most recently she could

be seen in the North American tour of Kinky Boots. “I don’t think there’s a single song I’m not on stage for,” she said. “I don’t know any other female role, if not any other role in musical theater, that requires someone to be so vocally, emotionally and physically present.” “The great entry point for this story specifically is its humor,” said Tyler Miclean, who plays Emmett Forrest. “They’re able to get these ideas through so clearly and so well because it’s very, very funny.” Jordan Litz plays Warner Huntington III, the character who breaks up with Elle Woods and spurs her journey to Harvard Law. “I think he does truly love Elle,” Litz said, “but his parents, they want him to be a senator and this world leading man that I don’t think he actually wants to be.” Hairdresser Paulette, famously played by Jennifer Coolidge on film, is played by Jill Taylor Anthony.

Elle Woods (Kirby Lunn) pursues her dreams in Legally Blonde the Musical.

(Photo by Richard Termine, courtesy of The Argyle)

“She meets Elle in her salon when Elle thinks she needs to change herself in order to get a guy,” Anthony explained. “And I get to say, ‘no way. If he doesn’t want you that way, then you don’t need him.’” Though Legally Blonde came out nearly 20 years ago, David Engel, who plays Professor Callahan, finds the story relevant to today’s audiences. “It’s incredibly fresh...and it does

resonate now more than ever,” Engel said. “The audience may think they know Legally Blonde, but this is just a different take. I think it’s so smartly written and it’s so, so entertaining.” See Legally Blonde the Musical through Aug. 25 at The Argyle Theatre, 34 West Main St., Babylon. f Ice Cream a few others, but I can’t mention those yet because we’re still in talks.” With nut and other food allergies becoming an increasing concern, a la mode is made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the Bronx where there is absolutely no chance of a la mode’s products being compromised with any nut dust or trace amounts of eggs or sesame seeds. “The fact that we’re the only manufacturing facility in the country that’s nut-free, egg-free and sesame-free [is unique],” said Marc. “We do dairy-free as well, so it’s safe. It’s the only safe product. That’s what differentiates us and makes us unique from other brands. We’re also super premium ice cream. So we are 60 percent low fat. That doesn’t make us unique, but the fact that we are able to have a super-premium ice cream that is safe without comprising flavor and taste, that helps us get to where we are now.” A la mode to date has done little advertising with much of the company’s success coming from word-ofmouth within the allergy community.

The company’s product line includes USDA “Smart Snacks” and in New York City is the only ice cream product allowed by the NYC school system that can be brought into the schools by students. A la mode ice cream is currently in

retail stores, schools, camps, corporations, bakeries, scoop shops as well as through e-commerce. The ice cream is being rolled out in stores on Long Island, including North Shore Farms, North Shore Market, North Shore Marketplace,

Natural Foods in Garden City, Uncle Giuseppe’s, Wild by Nature and with others to soon follow. To learn more about a la mode ice cream, visit www.alamodeshoppe. com.

WORD FIND

Holiday Mathis Holiday Mathis Mathis HOROSCOPES ByByByHoliday

This is a theme puzzle with the subject stated below. Find the listed words in the grid. (They may run in any direction but always in a straight line. Some letters are used more than once.) Ring each word as you find it and when you have completed the puzzle, there will be 31 letters left over. They spell out the alternative theme of the puzzle.

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND A nice drop

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Getting to the outcome you desire will depend on two things -- tenacity and making a good impression. The first one is easy; just keep at it. The second is tricky. It’s always more impressive not to try too hard in the room. Any trying you do before “the room” though will be respected. Preparation paves the way. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Fears are overcome with exposure to what scares you. Not all exposure is alike though. You needn’t dive in and overwhelm yourself. Go slowly. Relax first, and then face the fear. Retreat, recover, and then repeat. By facing your fear little by little, time and again, you will become immune to it. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You have options this week. You could meet your own needs or you could let another person help you out. Be strategic. Think about the other person’s side of it. Keep in mind that people feel an automatic affinity for those they help, and will typically like them much more than they like those whom they’ve been helped by. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Here comes the opportunity to figure out your place in the social order of a group. You know very little about most of the people involved, but you’ll learn. Don’t let facts get in the way. Do what feels natural. Once you’ve settled into a role, it’s not easy to claim a different one. Make yourself comfortable from the get go. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). There’s no one more loveable than you, though actually there’s no one less loveable either. Lovability, being a subjective matter, largely has to do with considering others and enacting the behaviors that will be appreciated. You’re not always in the mood for that kind of work. Radical self-acceptance paves the way. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). People dislike in others what they dislike in themselves. The opposite is also true. Notice what people like about you this week; they value that quality and possess some form of it. This week, you’ll use this information to forward a conversation, cast someone in a job or just generally navigate the social swirl. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The thing about the written rules is that most people with common decency would adhere to them without even knowing what they were. The rules that really matter this week are unwritten. They have to do with who is more powerful in which area and how the others comply with and complement those strengths. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The plan is to show up and be efficient, elegant, excellent, eloquent. It’s a lot to aspire to. If you do it wrong, so what? Just add that to the list of things humans have been doing wrong since the dawn of humanity. Anyway, as long as you attempt, you’ll hit the mark more times than most people. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ll receive some quality attention this week. You may be surprised at your reaction to having this focused energy on you. It could bring about a great sense of relief, vitality or happiness. This is the best kind of luck! It seems that you get what you need whether or not you’re aware of what that is. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Self-awareness will help you succeed this week. Self-consciousness? Not so much. Consciousness covers the body and the environment. Awareness goes to purpose and motive -- who you are as a conscious being and what you want out of your interactions. A little “thinking about your thinking” will go a long way. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Imitation is the flattery that feels like an insult. Being copied is theft, a violation. And it only happens when they like what you have, who you are, what you’re doing or all three. This week, expect admirers and protect what’s yours. Your work, recipes, plans and style will be very attractive and will gain fans and copycats. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). People noticing things about you can feel like scrutiny when you don’t know their motives or have reason to believe those motives are less than supportive. Avoid paranoia because it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s better to assume everyone is merely curious. Be who you want to be and take the fans that come.

Love in abundance will be yours. Love creates safety. Safety allows for mistakes. Where mistakes are allowed, experimentation is a joyous way to spend your energy. Out of this comes creativity, finding your voice, invention and innovation. It all starts with love. Go where love flows and people accept one another. Gravitate to the relationships and emotional environments that nurture you through both wins and losses. Success is impossible without love.

ROCKABILLY from page 8 a catalog we can add to. We’re going out and we’re going to have a blast. The band sounds great, looks great and the three of us are totally excited for this.” Rocker credits all this synergy to the fact that the Stray Cats have known each other since they were

9

JULY 31 - AUGUST 6, 2019

between the ages of 10 and 12, when they grew up within three blocks of each other in Massapequa. While he and Slim Jim Phantom attended Fairfield Elementary School, the duo met up with the slightly older Brian Setzer, who was then at Ames Junior High School. With all three sharing an affinity for early rock and roll and less than enthused with late ’70s popular music, the threesome were bouncing between playing New York City venues like Max’s Kansas City and CBGB’s as well as local gigs at places like McKay’s in Amityville and Arthur’s in Massapequa. And while their appearance initially perplexed people coming to see them play, fans starved for authenticity started packing clubs that the Stray Cats were repeatedly playing over a span of weeks. It’s a trend that continued when they went to England on a whim, not knowing anyone while couch surfing and sleeping outdoors in Hyde Park and on the tube. “London was basically Ground Zero in 1980 for music. So we bought a ticket for each of us and the bass, went over there and knocked on doors. And the same thing replicated itself like when we were playing before drunk crowds on Long Island, but on a much bigger scale,” Rocker recalled. “We played places like the Hope & Anchor, the Marquee Club and Dingwalls. Things took off really quickly there as well and the record companies started hanging around. We probably lived off the streets for a couple

of months. It’s a good thing it was summer.” Members of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Who started coming out to see the young American upstarts, but it was Welsh guitarist Dave Edmunds who cornered them and pleaded to let him produce them before, “some record company assigned someone out there to [screw] it up.” With Edmunds at the helm for the group’s self-titled UK debut, the splash the Stray Cats made was enough to land them a contract in their home country and return as conquering heroes with 1982’s Built For Speed, which yielded the top 10 hits “Stray Cat Strut” and “Rock This Town.” While the grind of touring and recording from 1980 to 1984 led to the group’s first break-up, the threesome have continued to find their way back to each other. “Forming the band was just so fundamental to me and I’m sure Brian and Jim. Not to be morbid, but all three of us in the band...somewhere in that first sentence of the obit it’s going to say Stray Cats—no matter what,” he said. “That’s part of what binds us together. That’s where we started from. It’s kind of great to go full circle and get a chance to do this and have it be the real band. It’s the real deal.” The Stray Cats will be appearing on Aug. 6 at Pier 17, 89 South St., NYC. For more information, visit www.pier17ny.com or call 212-732-8257.

To Sandwiches, With Love In praise of our greatest kitchen creation

BY STEVE MOSCO SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

W

here do I even begin with sandwiches? This is a food item so ubiquitous in culinary pop culture that focusing on any one style in particular would be an insult to the entire planet’s sandwich collective. There are breakfast sandwiches so good that they give you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Lunch breaks exist solely so that we might spend an hour alone with a really good sandwich. Dinners have bent to the will of sandwiches and even dessert has been infiltrated by the ice cream sandwich. We don’t deserve sandwiches. Blissfully simple in their conception and construction, sandwiches take food that could be fine on its own, and place it inside of an endless variety of bread. This gives us the freedom to pick up said food with our bare hands and bring it directly to our mouths. Sandwiches are a heavenly concoction of meats, cheeses, produce, sauces and spreads, all brought together with equally genuine excitement by both professional chefs and those with absolutely no business being in a kitchen. Sandwiches are the great equalizer. They can be dirt cheap or expensive extravaganzas. Not only that, but sandwiches are everywhere—if you haven’t had one yet today, it’s probably because you either forgot it at home, dropped it by accident or have plans to have one later. August is National Sandwich Month and in the spirit of celebration, pile high the history and the adoration.

Sandwich Zero

By all accounts, the 4th Earl of Sandwich John Montagu was a degenerate gambler. His secret, yet rather substantial gambling problem often kept the notorious fuddy-duddy of 1700s London at the card tables for hours, even days on end. As the story goes, during one particularly heightened gaming binge in 1762, Montagu grew hungry. But rather than leave

Il Fornello in Syosset makes many memorable sandwiches, like the Calabrese, with porchetta, broccoli rabe, hot cherry peppers, fresh mozzarella and balsamic vinaigrette. Tongue was one of the first meats ever placed on a sandwich, and that tradition continues at Jewish delis across the island. (Photos by Steve Mosco) the game so that he could eat in the kitchen or dining room like a proper gentleman, Montagu requested that the house cook bring him something he could eat with one hand and without getting up from his presumably lucky seat.

And thus, the sandwich was born. Composed of simply meat and bread, the cook’s contribution to his or her employer’s gambling problem impressed Montagu so much that he would eat it constantly. He carried sandwiches around everywhere—one

in his hand and sometimes even a few hidden in the many pockets of his dapper coat. To impress his high-society friends, he would stand in the middle of a party and demand everyone’s attention before revealing his sandwich with a showman’s flair,

Is a shawarma a sandwich? It is when it’s served on pita at Mamoun’s.

Like most impeccable inventions before and after it, the sandwich’s design has remained constant since it was first conceived in 1762. But while you can’t improve perfection, it is possible to enhance it. Cured meats, artisanal cheeses, freshly baked bread of various origins, piquant aioli, crisp lettuce and juicy tomatoes; all of these and more equal better sandwiches for you and me. And all these ingredients result in the greatest visual byproduct

Left: The pork bánh mì at the Rolling Spring Roll introduces Vietnamese ingredients to a French baguette. Right: The Moonshine hero at Valley Caterers in Franklin Square brings together roast beef, cheddar, cayenne pepper and coleslaw on a garlic hero. of any food: the cross section. A chance to view with your own eyes the grand design of the sandwich, the ideal cross section lays bare the layers of meat, cheese and then some like a geographical record of flavor. Two of the most important ingredients of any sandwich are the meat and cheese. Really, meat is the cornerstone

presumably accompanied by a hearty, “huzzah!” These meat-on-bread creations became so inextricably linked to Montagu that the rest of London eventually attached the Earl’s moniker to them. Of course, Montagu wasn’t the first person to put meat on bread and eat. Down in the Mediterranean, where Turkish and Greek mezze platters were served, dips, cheeses and meats were all “sandwiched” between layers of bread and eaten by locals long before Montagu played his first card game. History is likely full of these kinds of misrepresentations—but I’ll let this one slide, mostly because I just love the word “sandwich” too much to care.

The Sum Of Its Parts

JULY 31 - AUGUST 6, 2019

of any sandwich—Montagu knew it and now, you know it. Start with slices of whole-roasted turkey or sweet and savory ham. Perhaps some rare or medium rare roast beef is your meat of choice or maybe an expertly fried chicken cutlet is what makes your sandwich sing. No matter the meat, don’t be afraid to add even more on

top of that meat with the addition of fatty bacon. And on the subject of cheese, some say cheese overpowers the rest of the sandwich and, thus, is unnecessary. To that I say, take care to use the correct cheese. Sometimes a simple American will suffice and other times a sharp cheddar is in order. If both of those are too intensely flavored, go with a subtle Swiss or mozzarella, which is high on texture but low on overall flavor. And don’t forget about the bread, for it is more than merely a means to keeping everything together. Your sandwich bread should be a combination of doughy, crispy, chewy and crusty, with flavors and textures all serving to heighten the decadent experience.

Where The Sandwiches Are

Luckily, Long Island features too many master purveyors of sandwiches to list here. You probably have your own favorite spot, but expand your horizons and try a new sandwich every now and then. After all, John Montagu likely died penniless so that ordering a sandwich would always be a safe bet for the rest of us.

hen Alice in Chains’ (AIC) lead singer Layne Staley died back in 2002, it would have been easy for creative cohort Jerry Cantrell to put the band to rest. Having lost the most focal member of the group and drug addiction being a real problem with Cantrell’s other band mates, it would have been easy to have Alice in Chains go the way of Nirvana and Soundgarden. Instead, Cantrell reunited with bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney to recruit William DuVall to round out the band in 2007. Fast forward a dozen years and the band is currently on tour with Korn in support of Rainier Fog, AIC’s sixth studio album and third since Staley’s death. In this day and age of music streaming, Cantrell admits his band’s decision to still hit the recording studio can seem a bit anachronistic. “Records are hard to make. People don’t buy ’em anymore, so if you’re not lucky enough to make a successful

that way, because in most any other industry, if your product that you spend a year or two making and you use your own investment to make it and you get zero return, it’s pretty hard to stay in business. But we’ve been really fortunate. We have really good fans that still care about the music as we do. And the only reason we keep making records is that we feel like we have something to say and it feels like it’s time to do that.” With Cantrell front and center as AIC’s current lead singer, the band’s current batch of songs hit the same nuances AIC fans have come to expect. The grinding chords and atonal riffs of songs like “So Far Under” and the stark opener “The One You Know” are balanced out by more melodic fare like the harmony-soaked beauty of “Maybe” and ethereal closer “All I Am.” It fits in well with earlier material from the Staley era, making for in-concert set lists Cantrell is sure will please AIC’s legion of fans. “The response has been great to the music and live is obviously where it all comes together. We’ve been really lucky. People know and react to a good three or four songs from each one of the last three records the same way that they do to the older Alice tunes,” he said. “We’re pretty much about 50-50 in our set list from the

incarnation of the band before and the band that is now.” Although Cantrell’s urge to pick up a guitar followed his seeing Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi on the Heaven & Hell Tour, Elton John was a major influence. So much so that the aspiring musician not only joined and became president of his high school choir, but was also attracted to darker, musical tones via the a capella Gregorian chants from the 14th and 15th centuries that they often practiced. “My earliest musical memory was probably listening to Elton John. Greatest Hits was probably the first record I ever got. My dad gave it to me,” he said. “But I was into him before that. My neighbor had Caribou and he was all over the radio. Even before I ever thought about playing guitar, that’s where I made my first musical connection where I thought it was something I’d like to really do.” With the current leg of the Rainier Fog tour wrapping up in the next few weeks, Cantrell expects AIC to take a break before hitting the studio again. “It’s a year and a half process of writing and recording it and two years of touring that we do. So that’s about three and a half or four years of being together, so it’s good to take a little break from each other once in a while,” he said with a laugh. “The year 2020 will probably be chill for Alice.”

or Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, football has always held a special place in his life dating back to a childhood growing up in the Pacific Northwest and rooting hard for the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the Seattle Seahawks being founded in 1976. “I love going to a baseball game or a basketball game. But this is just such a potent thing. It’s such a short season. So much is on the line and you just can’t beat the game in my opinion,” Cantrell said. The Tacoma native may currently be on the road touring with Korn in support of last year’s Rainier Fog, but he and bandmate bassist Mike Inez are gearing up for the ninth year of the annual Alice in Chains Fantasy Football League and Auction. Among the other famous team owners who’ve participated are fantasy football columnists/analysts Michael Fabiano and Matthew Berry, Anthrax’s Scott Ian, the NFL Networks’ Rich Eisen and actor/director Michael Rappaport. And while bragging rights

are a big part of winning the league crown, Cantrell and his buddies tie in a more munificent spin on their fantasy football results. “It’s a really fun thing that we do. We invite some of our friends in the sports, music and acting worlds to get together and do this charity league,” Cantrell explained. “We all donate items to be auctioned off and go to the winner’s charity of choice every year.” Past drafts have taken place at the guitarist’s home and were broadcast live on SiriusXM’s Fantasy Sports Radio channel and hosted by SiriusXM fantasy football experts John Hansen and Bob Harris. Part of the season’s launch is an auction

Terry Bradshaw featuring memorabilia donated to raise money. Recent proceeds have gone to MusiCares, in the name of the late Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, and Music For Relief, in remembrance of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington. When it comes to football heroes, Cantrell’s likes definitively skew toward the Steelers and Seahawks. Terry Bradshaw (Pittsburgh Steelers, 1970 to 1983) “I love Bradshaw. Up until [Tom] Brady took the mantle, it was just him and [Joe] Montana. I just always thought he was tough and had a sense of humor. He took a lot of [crap] from people and came out the other side smelling like a rose because he’s just himself. I just think he’s a great guy and a great competitor. Like Largent, he didn’t fit the prototypical model of being a great quarterback. But he was one of the greats of all time.” Alice in Chains will be appearing with Korn on Aug. 6 at Northwell at Jones Beach Theater, 1000 Ocean Pkwy., Wantagh. or Yankee fans from the 1970s, Aug. 2 is the melancholiest date on the calendar. Every year on that date, the phone lines to sports talk shows are jammed with fans remembering Thurman Munson. It has been 40 years since Munson’s tragic death from a flying accident, a hobby he took up to spend more time with his son, Michael, but memories of the man and his career remain evergreen. At Yankee Stadium, he takes his place as the Yankee of the Decade from another glorious era in the team’s history. During Munson’s AllStar career, he had more hits in his first 10 years than any other catcher in baseball history. But stats don’t tell the Munson story. He was a reluctant team captain, but that appointment in 1976, at the suggestion of team owner George M. Steinbrenner, gave the Bronx Bombers the lift they needed. After 12 years in baseball exile, the Yankees, from 1976 to 1978, ran off three consecutive division titles, three straight pennants and two World Series crowns. Those who saw Munson play can never forget him. In his prime, he was a .300 hitter who drove in buckets of runs. He was one of the great all-around catchers in baseball history, defensively, offensively and on the base paths. The youngest of four siblings, Munson came up hard in Canton, OH, the son of a demanding truck driver who spent most of his time on the road. A three-sport star at Canton’s Stark High School, Munson chose to play college ball at nearby Kent State

University, where he could stay close to his high school sweetheart, Diane, who later would become his wife and mother to the couple’s three children. Munson was scouted by former Yankee star Gene Woodling, who disregarded the traditional evaluation, writing “SIGN HIM” on the scouting report, which the Yankees did. Munson became the Yankees’ indispensable man as they clawed their way to respectability during the early 1970s. He joined Bobby Murcer, Roy White, Ron Blomberg, Mel Stottlemyre and Sparky Lyle on a team that was playing winning baseball. In 1970, Munson was voted Rookie of the Year. In 1971, he made his first All-Star team. In 1976, he was voted the league’s Most Valuable Player. In time, Munson tasted real glory. Ralph Houk once called him the greatest clutch hitter he had ever seen—and The Major had seen them all. Munson hit safely in 15 of 16 postseason games, a string chock full of memorable moments. In the pennant-deciding game five of the 1976 American League Championship Series (ALCS) series, Munson went three for four with several key RBIs. The next year, after the Yankees lost game one to Kansas City in a return match, Munson had three big hits to lift the Yankees into a tie for a series they would win in five games. In game one of the 1977 World Series, he had an RBI double that gave the Yankees a late-inning lead. In 1978, trailing Kansas City, 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth and with the series tied one game apiece, Munson came up against righty Doug Bird with White on first. I’m still in awe of what he did—because he couldn’t do it.” Then came the World Series. In game four, the Yankees, down 2-1 in games, trailed the Dodgers 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Munson rapped a two-out, game-tying double off reliever Terry Forster. The Yanks then won on Lou Piniella’s game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning. The next day, Munson had his greatest World Series game, going three-for-five, with five RBIs in a 12-2 shellacking of the Dodgers. In his final World Series at bat at Yankee Stadium, Munson hit a long, run-scoring double to score Paul Blair from first base.

Munson was the backstop who handled a pitching staff that included such Cy Young Award winners as Ron Guidry and Sparky Lyle and Hall of Famers Catfish Hunter and Rich Gossage. He was one of the greatest base runner catchers ever and he set the aggressive style those Yankee teams were known for. For the past 39 years, New York has been home to an annual Thurman Munson Awards Dinner. Past recipients of Munson Awards include Jorge Posada, another former Yankee catcher whose career was particularly inspired by Munson’s example. “New York got him right,” Diane Munson told the media at an Old Timers Day several years ago. That same day, Michael Munson took his fiancée to his father’s plaque in Monument Park, got down on one knee and proposed. Thurman Munson as a family man had come to a happy ending.
