spionage, or the art of spycraft, is a type of intelligence assessment that can be traced as far back as the storied fifth-century Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu. His book The Art of War featured a section dedicated to the importance of spying, where he advised, “One who knows the enemy and knows himself will not be endangered in a hundred engagements.” A central tool used by governing bodies and countries at war, the history of espionage includes a number of historical figures. Among the more famous is Francis Walsingham, principal secretary to Queen Elizabeth I of England who spent 17 years helping her shape England into a maritime power
through a combination of colonial conquest and intercontinental trade. Among his accomplishments were disrupting the military operations of Spain, securing the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots and dismantling a series of plots meant to unseat Queen Elizabeth. By the time of the American Revolution (1775 to 1783), General George Washington became known as America’s first spymaster by exploiting a weak British intelligence system. Washington tasked Major Benjamin Talmadge with forming the Culper Ring, which was used to keep Washington informed about the activities of the British Army in New York City and throughout Long Island and Connecticut. The flaws in England’s intelligence gathering allowed Washington to succeed in capturing
the invading British army during 1781’s Battle of Yorktown. The AMC television series Turn: Washington’s Spies, which ran from 2014 to 2017 and is based on Alexander Rose’s 2006 book Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring, told a fictionalized version of the story of the Culper Ring, with a focus on Abe Woodhull and his correspondence with Washington during the war. The Civil War provided another canvas where spying took on heightened importance. ScottishAmerican detective Allan Pinkerton was appointed head of the Union Intelligence Service for the first two years of the war. In addition to ferreting out a Baltimore assassination attempt against Abraham Lincoln,

Pinkerton gathered military intelligence by having him and his agents work undercover as Confederate soldiers and sympathizers. Pinkerton himself was almost captured in Memphis when his cover was blown. Pinkerton’s agency proved to be a precursor to the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Department, founded in 1977 as a means of identifying, assessing, countering and neutralizing international and internal threats to the United States Army and U.S. Department of Defense. In 1910, British law enforcement officer William Melville was tapped to help establish the British Secret Service, the first independent intelligence agency. Nineteen military intelligence departments—MI1 to MI9 —were the basis for the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), with only two, MI5 and MI6, in existence today. The latter two cover domestic and foreign counter-intelligence respectively. At this point, the cloak and dagger aspect of espionage provided rich fodder for authors, which would eventually springboard into film and television. Early novelists that emerged from the nascent spy novel genre included Erskine Childers (The Riddle of The Sands), who was executed for his actions in supporting Irish Republicanism, William Le Queux (The Invasion of 1910) and E. Phillips Oppenheim (The Great Impersonation). By the time World War I broke out, aerial reconnaissance and photography and the interception and decryption of radio signals were the latest methods of intelligence collection. British and French intelligence services were more effective than their German counterparts, although the latter yielded the most famous spy in the form of Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, a Dutch exotic dancer better known as Mata Hari, who was executed by firing squad in France. With the outbreak of World War II, Winston Churchill ordered the SIS to “set Europe ablaze” and develop a vast network of trained spies and saboteurs. While the Germans operated a pair of poorly organized espionage networks against the United States, their sabotage efforts were derailed by the FBI, the SIS transformed into the Special Operations Executive (SOE), a clandestine organization that was known as “Churchill’s Secret Army.” The SOE worked in conjunction with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), an American intelligence network that had President Franklin Delano
Allan Pinkerton c. 1861

“Wild Bill” Donovan Roosevelt appoint war hero “Wild Bill” Donovan to oversee it. Between the SOE and OSS, covert special operation teams were deployed to infiltrate German-occupied countries in Europe and help organize local resistance groups. The OSS was the precursor to what eventually became the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Out of the ashes of World War II came the Cold War, as the forces of capitalism and communism faced off. In its wake, espionage experienced an especially sharp spike as the American CIA, Soviet KGB and British MI6 were the most active spy agencies. And while the dissolution of the Soviet Union may have temporarily lulled the world into a degree of complacency, the events of September 11 resulted in a war on terror and a current emphasis on electronic warfare. In the process, the United States has no less than 17 federal agencies that form the United States Intelligence Community (IC). Technology continues to play a major role in these modern-day versions of spy versus spy, with espionage organizations making use of imagery intelligence, cryptanalysis and spy satellites to partake in covert, and oftentimes nefarious, operations.

ave you ever wanted to become a spy? Well Manhattan’s SPYSCAPE is just the place for you to unleash your inner James Bond. “SPYSCAPE opened in February 2018 and it was started by an investment group out of London that was looking to provide some great entertainment venues and was interested in the spy genre,” said general manager of SPYSCAPE, Ian Oldaker. “They worked with a group of advisors, ex-spies and some exhibition designers as well as other types of artists like digital artists, and they put together the content and the challenges that make up the actual profiling system, which is the heart of the experience.” The experience of SPYSCAPE is a journey of self-discovery through the lens of spying and is unlike a traditional museum where artifacts lead the narration.
“Here, the story that you discover about yourself is the experience and is what leads you through the different galleries,” explained Oldaker. “There are seven galleries and each gallery has two things. One is a true spy story tied to a specific theme, so each gallery theme is a type of spy skill. One gallery might be about encryption and the other might be about deception. We have galleries about special operations and surveillance too.” Four out of the seven galleries have specific challenges on digital platforms that are tied to different spy skills to measure one’s ability. “In encryption, you have a challenge where your ability to decipher codes is put to the test,” said Oldaker. “The same thing in surveillance. We also have a lie detector in our deception challenge. So those skills put together a score, which contribute to a profile, which is compared to actual spies and spy recruits and how they’re measured
at real spy agencies.” Real spy agencies take their recruits, figure out their skills and aim them in a specific direction of work. At SPYSCAPE, they do same thing and tell museum-goers what their skills would align them with if they were to be chosen as a real spy. “You could be an intelligence operative or a spy master or an agent handler,” said Oldaker. According to Oldaker, the favorite gallery amongst everyone is the special operations gallery because of the laser tunnels that test one’s agility. “If you recall some movies like Entrapment or Ocean’s 12 where they’re going in and around lasers to get to a specific thing, we do a little bit of a similar thing,” said Oldaker. “You’re basically scoring yourself as you go through lasers. It’s great fun for groups because they challenge each other individually when they go together.” SPYSCAPE has a traditional museum display that exhibits a lot
of spy tools as well in its Cabinet of Curiosity. “We have everything from a nickel that’s hollowed out from a compass and all these different spy gadgets that were actual artifacts,” said Oldaker. “They were developed and used in real time in real situations, so there’s a lot of those that I really like.” Recently, SPYSCAPE opened its first temporary exhibition about James Bond. “It’s about the DB5, which is the beautiful Aston Martin car that is featured in many of the Bond movies and is part of the imagery of the Bond franchise,” said Oldaker. “[The exhibit is about] how that car is sort of developed in a lot of Bond films. It’s a great exhibition and it will only be here probably through the end of the year. It’s a great opportunity to add on to the experience for people.” SPYSCAPE is located at 928 8th Ave., in Manhattan. For more information and for tickets, visit spyscape. com.

spionage is real. And somewhere out there, we can only hope that it is just as cool as pop culture has come to portray it. For decades, men and women have donned tuxedos and wielded weapons and high tech gear during their quest to save the world. The spy genre is still popular today, with James Bond continuing to take the lead when it comes to the face of film, but if you’re a fan of espionage in Hollywood, it’s no secret that you have probably seen a few of these flicks.
The 39 Steps
James Bond films
Shaken, not stirred. When you think of spy cinema, you think of James Bond. That’s just how it goes. Created by Ian Fleming in 1952, Commander James Bond RN—code number 007—epitomizes the classic spy. With a license to kill, Bond is tasked with seemingly impossible missions that more often than not, involve a rogues’ gallery of enemies, gambling and women. The secret service agent has been played by a star-studded list of actors, including Sean Connery (1962–67; 1971; 1983), David Niven (1967), George Lazenby (1969), Roger Moore (1973–85), Timothy Dalton (1987–89), Pierce
Brosnan (1995–2002) and Daniel Craig (2006–present).
The 39 Steps (1935)
Back in 1935, Alfred Hitchcock directed the British thriller The 39 Steps that was very loosely based on the 1915 adventure novel The ThirtyNine Steps by John Buchan. Average British civilian Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) becomes caught up in preventing an organization of spies called the 39 Steps from stealing British military secrets. When he is accidentally accused of the murder of a counter-espionage agent, Hannay flees to Scotland and becomes involved with a beautiful woman, all while hoping to stop the spy ring and clear his name. Lauded by filmmaker and actor Orson Welles as a “masterpiece,” the film was ranked the fourth best British film of the 20th century by The British Film Institute.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Based on the 1959 Richard Condon novel of the same name, The Manchurian Candidate is another Cold War political thriller, but this time, the plot centers on the Korean War veteran Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey), the progeny of a prominent political family. A prisoner of war during the conflict in Korea along with platoon commander Captain Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra), Shaw is brainwashed by his captors. After his discharge back into civilian life, Shaw becomes an unwitting assassin involved in an international communist conspiracy. Marco finds himself plagued by strange nightmares and, together with fellow soldier Allen Melvin (James Edwards) who also suffers from the same nightmares, races to uncover a terrible plot. The film was remade in 2004 with Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight as the leads.
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965)
Based on another Cold War spy novel of the same name by British author John le Carré (written in 1963), the film tells the story of Alec Leamas (Richard Burton), a British agent who, set to retire, is sent to East Germany as a faux defector to gain disinformation about a powerful East German intelligence officer. It is the height of the Cold War when Leamas gets himself arrested and is caught in a sinister labyrinth of plots and counter-plots unlike anything he has ever encountered in his career.
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
It was Tom Clancy’s debut novel of the same name in 1984 that launched this suspenseful movie that tracks Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) as he abandons his orders and heads for the Eastoast of the United States. Equipped with innovative technology, Ramius’ submarine, “Red October,” is virtually invisible, but when an American sub detects the Russians’ presence, CIA agent Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) sets out to determine Ramius’ motives. The first installment in the Jack Ryan series, The Hunt for Red October also starred Scott Glenn, James Earl Jones and Sam Neill.
Mission: Impossible series
The spy franchise keeps going and going. The series of American action spy films is based on and a follow-on from the television series of the same name created by Bruce Geller. Coproduced by and starring Tom Cruise (who stars as Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force).

The Battle For Health Benefits
NATIONAL NEWS
Senate votes to extend 9/11 victim compensation fund; local survivor recounts BY RUDY MALCOM
editorial@antonmediagroup.com
O
n July 23, the Senate voted 97-2 to reauthorize a bill that funds virtually permanent healthcare for 9/11 rescue workers, many of whom live on Long Island. The September 11 Victim Compensation Fund, whose benefit payments were recently cut by up to 70 percent, was set to run dry by December 2020. President Donald Trump signed the bill into law on July 29, allowing claims to be filed until October 2090. “There’s a lot of people out there who haven’t even been told that they have cancer yet,” said retired FDNY lieutenant Michael O’Connell of Westbury, who attended Tuesday’s vote. “Two or three years down the road, I know I’m going to get a phone call from a friend who’s going to have a brain tumor or kidney or lung cancer.” In 2009, O’Connell retired from the FDNY at the age of 33 after being diagnosed with sarcoidosis, which causes the body to attack its own organs and tissues. At the time, O’Connell was one of the first firefighters to be diagnosed with the rare disorder. Since then, hundreds have followed. The World Trade Center Health Program has identified nearly 2,400 deaths linked to 9/11-related health effects. By comparison, almost 3,000 people were killed during the terror attacks. By July 2011, the program identified more than 56,000 first responders, volunteers and others with health problems caused by exposure to toxins at Ground Zero. That number rose to more than 93,000 by the end of 2018, with nearly 800 new people signing up every month for monitoring and treatment. Rhinosinusitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease and asthma are the most common ailments. But as

of this May, more than 12,500 cases of cancer have been reported. O’Connell, then 25, hadn’t yet graduated from FDNY Fire Academy when two planes hit the Twin Towers. He raced from Long Island to Queens and then, with other first responders, to lower Manhattan. Within minutes he was at Ground Zero, where everything had disintegrated into rubble. “I knew it was happening, but it didn’t seem real. It almost felt like a scene from a movie,” said O’Connell, recounting his most painful memory from that day. “You wear an alarm that makes a loud screeching sound if you’re lying motionless. The first time I stepped foot onto the grounds, that’s all you heard. Those were our guys underneath the piles. You couldn’t get to them.” Nearly 350 firefighters were killed during 9/11, and on July 18, Richard Driscoll became the 200th FDNY member to die from a 9/11-related illness. On September 11, 2001, however, O’Connell hadn’t yet recognized the risk of inhaling toxic

’’
debris. Years later, he woke up one morning with pain all over his body. “Most of my joints were inflamed to the point where I couldn’t move,” he said. At the time, his wife Rebecca was pregnant with the first of their three children. After receiving his diagnosis, O’Connell chose to end his career at the FDNY, though he could’ve done deskwork. “I wasn’t going to spend one waking moment I didn’t have to away from my children,” he said. “I had to leave the job, but I found peace in going to work for the FealGood Foundation.” John Feal founded the
organization to ensure health benefits for 9/11 emergency personnel. As part of his work for the foundation, O’Connell and other first responders met in June with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who then fast-tracked the bill from the House of Representatives to the Senate. The law affects O’Connell “only in an emotional sense,” he noted, because he was previously compensated by legislation in 2015. After receiving medication and high doses of steroids, he should be able to lead a long life, provided that he exercises and monitors his health. “We all were sick and duly compensated for our illnesses,” he said. “Why should people that are getting sick now or will possibly get sick in the future be any different? We got together because we knew that this was the right thing to do.” For O’Connell and his team, the bill’s passage is a “tremendous victory.” The law’s full name is “Never Forget the Heroes: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer and Luis Alvarez Permanent Authorization of the September 11 Victim
Compensation Fund Act,” honoring three first responders who died of 9/11-related conditions. The law provides unlimited funding for 9/11 victims, earmarking $10.2 billion for the next 10 years and “such sums as may be necessary” through 2092. Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) and Mike Lee (R-UT) blocked the bill’s unanimous passage on July 17, pointing to growing national debt. The next day, however, they agreed to vote on the bill in exchange for votes on two amendments to the legislation. Paul’s amendment proposed offsetting the cost of the bill by cutting other programs (excluding Medicare and Social Security). He cited research on quails’ promiscuity as an example of excessive government spending. Lee’s amendment capped the bill to $10.2 billion for the next 10 years and every decade thereafter. Both noted that they didn’t oppose 9/11 survivors, instead characterizing themselves as fiscal hawks. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who championed the bill, argued that Lee’s amendment would force 9/11 survivors to continually plead for their compensation. Lee countered her claim. His and Paul’s amendments failed to pass, and the two became the bill’s lone naysayers. “I thought they were putting in these amendments to be fiscally responsible to their constituents,” O’Connell said. “But when they voted no, it showed their true colors.” Overall, O’Connell believes that, in this instance, humanity triumphed over politics. “When human lives are really on the line, the federal government does have your back,” he said. “Tens of thousands of people will be taken care of for the rest of their lives.”

A Powerful Connection Uniting art and science with energy
O
n paper, it may seem that science and art are polar opposites, but when they are brought together in a visual form, the two subjects make perfect sense. That is the case for the new exhibition at the Nassau County Museum of Art titled “Energy: The Power of Art,” on display through Nov. 3. In a groundbreaking effort for a fine arts museum, top-tier science and major art by Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, Julie Mehretu, Frank Stella, Joseph Cornell and Man Ray will be fused into one dynamic and interactive exhibition. Working with the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Tesla Museum, this innovative project juxtaposes masterworks in many media with images produced by the most advanced scientific instruments, and even an active “cloud chamber,” to explore the supposedly “invisible” world of energy. “My art is energy made visible,” Pollock famously declared. Miya Ando, whose unforgettable aurora borealis installation embodies the energy of the heavens, is one of several works commissioned for this show. Other highlights include monumental paintings by Richard Pousette-Dart, Julie Mehretu, James Rosenquist and Doug Argue, Stella’s most recent sculpture, a rare portfolio by Man Rayand watercolors created directly for NASA by Barbara Prey. The laboratory of Nikola Tesla is re-created, using some of his historic instruments and spectacular images from a “beamline” at Brookhaven capture the beauty of physics. The science of art meets the art of science in one power-packed show. The Nassau County Museum of Art is located at One Museum Dr., Roslyn Harbor. LOVE LESSONS Marisa T. Cohen, PhD Even if this seems gratifying in the short-term, it can lead to long-term problems in the relationship. In addition, you aren’t sharing the real reason why you were hurt or angry in the first place. An effective way to share your needs during a disagreement is by using “I” language. “I” language relates a situation back to you and your feelings, which enables you to fully express how you are being affected. In addition, “I” language focuses on the behavior rather than on the person. Replacing “Why did you do that?” which may be accompanied by an eye roll, with “When you make plans without me, I feel left out” is much
more effective. By doing this, you are able to explain to the individual you are arguing with why you are upset, angry, etc. This allows for much more effective and clear communication. Ellie Lisitsa of The Gottman Institute notes that the antidote to criticism, is a soft or gentle startup, which allows you to describe your needs rather than calling out your partner. This soft startup typically
employs “I” statements (Lisitsa, 2013). So, remember that the next time you wind up at an impasse with your partner, take a moment to think about the message you want to send and how to best share it. Marisa T. onflict is a normal part of relationships. At some point, even individuals in the healthiest relationships are bound to clash. While the natural instinct may be to protect yourself by lashing out, especially if you are feeling hurt, it is important to remember that this isn’t the best approach. When you lash out, the things you say will be remembered long after the argument is over. Beyond that, the reason why you were hurt in the first place may not clearly be communicated to your partner. There’s a difference between winning an argument and being effective in communicating your point. For example, a person may consider “winning,” ending the argument and walking away so that he or she no longer has to continue the discussion and let his or her guard down. To another person, “winning” may be leaving his or her partner with an emotional scar as a result of feeling hurt and wanting to cause pain to another. An example of this may be calling someone a slob or using another derogatory adjective.

rad Kolodny embarked on a unique journey in 2015. The Syosset native and member of Midway Jewish Center wanted to see every Jewish house of worship, known as a synagogue, on Long Island. “We were completely redoing our sanctuary, and I was a photographer in college,” Kolodny said. “So the night before the demolition of the sanctuary, I went in to take pictures. I wanted to have memories.” Once he took the pictures, he thought of a great idea. He started the Instagram page @synagoguesoflongisland. From there, he began looking up different synagogues on the island, posting pictures of the different sanctuaries, inside and out. “There’s an epidemic of synagogues closing and being sold,” he said. “Who is going to remember those places? Who is going to know about the places already gone?” As the project continued, he
decided it was time to turn this into a book. Titled Seeking Sanctuary, 125 Years of Synagogues on Long Island, Kolodny explores 385 historic congregations across Long Island, varying in size, location, age and more. The book, published by Segula Publishing, features 128 pages of unique content about the history of Judaism on the island. “I was out taking pictures of 50, 100, 200, 385 buildings, and I realized there’s a story to be told here,” he said. Kolodny discusses the history of Judaism on Long Island, starting with European immigrants working at a rubber factory in Setauket, who came together to create the region’s first synagogue. They created Agudas Achim in 1896, he said. Throughout his search, he found 219 active synagogues, varying from orthodox, conservative, reform and other denominations. He also acknowledges the difference between synagogues based on the origin of the

s Every Synagogue On Long Island congregation (i.e. Persians compared to Ashkenazim). So out of the hundreds of synagogues Kolodny has seen, which is his favorite? Well, there are two. “The former Congregation Beth David in Lynbrook,” he said. “It was the only building on Long Island built in a Moorish style. It has two onion domes at the top, which is very unique and very old, from 1928. They merged with another in 2011 and it’s now a Baptist church.” Kolodny is also fascinated with the former Temple Emanu-El in East

Meadow, which merged with another congregation from Wantagh last year. “It was a beautiful, mid-Century modern architecture,” Kolodny said. “The sanctuary was built in a circle. It was a round building. The walls of the circular sanctuary were made of concrete and stained glass, with all different colors. They were six-sided windows, so it gave the illusion of being inside a beehive.” The book is already one of the most popular for those looking to read about Judaism. It’s ranked No. 1 on Amazon’s list of new released in the history of Judaism category. But before picking up the book, Kolodny has a message for readers. “Appreciate Jewish history on Long Island, whether knowing Howard Stern had his bar mitzvah in the Roosevelt Jewish Center or having interest in visiting a synagogue in Sag Harbor that’s 120 years old,” he said. Seeking Sanctuary, 125 Years of Synagogues on Long Island is available for purchase on Amazon.

an you imagine what it would be like to feel no fear regardless of circumstance? I am not referring to being courageous or resolute in the face of grave danger. Rather, having no physiological response to perceived threats to one’s survival. Would you like to have that capacity? Sounds like having superpowers minus the ability to bend steel with your bare hands or leap tall buildings in a single bound. Believe it or not, there is a condition, Urbach-Wiethe (UW) disease, that creates the no-fear effect. In UW disease, which is incredibly rare, calcium deposits take over the amygdala, the part of the brain that is responsible for emotion and survival instincts. The result is the complete absence of fear. A few years ago, Washington Post reporter Rachel Feltman wrote an article entitled, “Meet the Woman Who Can’t Feel Fear.” She wrote about a

And I went home.” SM also reported being held at gunpoint on two occasions and said she did not feel the need to contact the police. After all of these incidents, she experienced no signs of PARENTHOOD PLUS trauma. She said that none of the threats to her life bothered Andrew Malekoff her in the slightest. It’s not that SM didn’t realize the grave danger she woman that she refers to as was in. She is intelligent SM who has been diagnosed enough to know that being with UW disease. held at gunpoint could lead Feltman was able to get an interview with SM, who shared to her death, but she lacks the acute stress response that a personal example of what everyone else feels when they it is like to feel no fear. “I was walking to the store, and I saw are exposed to danger. How would someone with this man on a park bench. He UW—if they were a parent— said, ‘Come here please.’ So I went over to him. I said, ‘What respond to a threat of danger to their child? she would rely on her intelligence and her fearlessness to protect her child. Reading about UW disease made me wonder: Are there other human conditions in which there is a profound absence of fear? For example, people with personalities that are characterized by antisocial behavior tend to have shallow emotions and a weak conscience. Such people don’t experience anxiety or sadness like most of us do, but that doesn’t make them immune to fear in the face of mortal danger. What they do seem immune to is shame. There have been only about 400 cases of Urbach-Wiethe disease since it was first discovered in 1908. So there are not many people walking the earth today who experience a complete lack of fear. As for a lack of shame, I’m sad to say that it seems to be rapidly on the rise. Thousands of children
have been ripped from their mothers’ arms at the border. Many asylum seekers are living in inhumane conditions, lacking basics like food and water. Journalists, some of whom risk their lives to expose criminal and/or immoral behaviors in their search for truth, are being denigrated, threatened and even killed. Regulations protecting us and our children from toxins in the environment are being tossed out at an alarming rate. I imagine you have other shameful things to add to that list. For the majority of us who feel both fear and shame, it’s time to speak out—even if it can be a scary thing to do. It would be a real shame if we remain silent. PORTUGAL from page 19A As you plan your next vacation to Portugal, be sure to add these vibrant places to your itinerary.
Lisbon
Portugal’s capital city is a great place to start your European adventure. Between the quaint streetcars and lookalike Golden Gate Bridge, the hilly, coastal city feels a bit like San Francisco with a Mediterranean flavor. The trams in Lisbon make it easy to get around the city. As the second oldest city in Europe (after Athens), Lisbon is home to many historical buildings, including Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, Castelo de São Jorge and Praça do Comércio. Belém Tower, or Torre de Belém, is an architectural jewel from the early 1500s that sits on the bank of the Tagus River. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is open to visitors daily and offers private tours when booked in advance. São Jorge Castle played an important part in Lisbon history and is a must-see for any visitor. From atop the fortress, you’ll get a wonderful view of terracotta rooftops as far as the eye can see. While you explore every corner of the city, make time to stop at Pastéis de Belém, a large bakery that churns out 22,000 pastéis de Belém every day. These world-famous Portuguese custard tarts are made with creamy
Porto Côvo
Óbidos egg yolks, caramelized and dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Pro tip: If the takeaway line is too long, go inside and ask for table service.
Sintra
Sintra
The delightful resort town of Sintra is located in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, not far from Lisbon—making it the perfect day trip from the capital city. The Palacio Nacional da Pena exemplifies 19th-century Romanticism as applied to architecture. Vivid reds and yellows are visible from every part of the lush Parque de Pena forest that surrounds the palace. The grounds feature hidden pathways, ornamental
gardens and mythical gargoyles that make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. The rest of picturesque Sintra is famed for its medieval castles, historic villas, luxury estates and Michelin star restaurants.
Óbidos
Encircled by a fortified wall, Óbidos is an excellent example of a medieval town, with narrow cobbled streets,
lively market squares, traditional painted houses and a well-preserved castle with its origins in antiquity. Óbidos highlights its medieval ancestry with a festival each July featuring heraldic flags, jugglers, jesters, jousting knights, merchant stalls and grilled meats on offer at every tavern. Ginja d’Obidos is a local delicacy of the region. The cherry liqueur is served in chocolate cups and can be sampled all around town. Óbidos is also a literary haven with a dozen bookshops within the city limits, including one converted 12th-century church. Book lovers can spend hours browsing the shelves for first editions, new releases and everything in between.
Porto Côvo
Located on the Alentejo coast of Portugal, this tiny fishing village is a hidden gem. At the shore, natural cliffs tower over fine sand beaches and deep blue waters of the Atlantic. Even when the summer draws an endless number of vacationers, secluded coves can be discovered. Visit Porto Côvo to admire the beautiful scenery and luxuriate in a little piece of paradise.

This is a theme puzzle with the subject stated below. Find the listed words in the grid. (They may run in any direction but always in a straight line. Some letters are used more than once.) Ring each word as you find it and when you have completed the puzzle, there will be 35 letters left over. They spell out the alternative theme of the puzzle.
INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND Are they for real?
ARIES (March 21-April 19). It’s not really about the shiny prize, the big-dollar bottom line, the admiration of your peers. These are arbitrary symbols for something else. What you’re really looking for is a feeling of living life on your own terms. You’ll get there, too. You have a knack for setting the right sort of intentions this week. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Figure out how long things should take and stick to that. Keep the margins tight this week because your work won’t necessarily get better if you have more time to execute the task. In fact, if you have too much time for a project, the results will actually be worse than if you have just barely enough time to get it done. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). No relationship is perfect. Still, you should feel pretty good around your chosen ones most of the time that you’re together. Also, they should bring out the best in you. Where a feeling of trust is the norm, the bumps in the road of life will seem like no big deal. You’ll weather the trail together, and laugh about it later. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Remember when you felt out of touch with the social swirl? You’ll make up for that in this week’s dealings. The careful attention you give to interactions will smooth the way for good relationships. You’ll tune into the subtle reactions of others, gather deeper information and follow excellent social instincts. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Pacing is important to the outcome. The same gesture can be seen as weak, strong, gentle, graceful, appropriate or even violent, considering how fast or slow it happens. Controlling your pace of life -- being able to take things at a comfortable stride -- will be the reason for much success this week. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). When a person can make you laugh, this is no small thing. Laughter happens when you come together on a few levels at once. Laughter represents shared values, intelligence, outlook and more. It’s a spontaneous dance of souls. The best lifestyle upgrade you could make is to get more laughter in your daily life. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Interesting and mysterious people populate your day to day. Maybe you’ll never get to the bottom of what drives these fascinating characters, but you’ll sure get some beautiful clues this week. Also, don’t doubt for a minute that someone else isn’t terribly intrigued by the mystery of you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The one who convinces you to do things you normally wouldn’t do is exerting a powerful influence that, for some reason, you’re allowing. Maybe you’re curious or feeling wild. Or maybe this person is more masterful at manipulation than you are at spotting it. What do your friends think? Gather opinions. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Resist the rush to finish. You’ve yet to master all the lessons and skills necessary to successfully managing what’s ahead. This week represents the most valuable education you’ll get, but you must be thorough to absorb it. Even when you think you’ve completed the work, double back to make sure. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You will help people who need and want help. To help anyone else is not only super hard, it just may be impossible. Certainly, it’s a waste of effort when there are so many who actually need and want your assistance. If you don’t have coaching skills, this is a time to pick them up. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). All people have multiple versions of themselves. You appreciate when those different personality tones lie within a reasonable range. You’ve already experienced enough instability in your world, and it’s made you value consistency. You’ve come to expect certain behaviors and outcomes. Your trust is predicated on this. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You like talking about the things that are important to your loved ones even if the topics aren’t exactly in your wheelhouse. You want to be in on what makes them happy. Are they similarly generous toward you? This week is about achieving a sustainable balance in relationships. Get your due. It’s healthier for all.

AROUND NASSAU
N
County Clerk Warns Of New Deed Scam
assau County Clerk Maureen O’Connell is cautioning homeowners about a new type of solicitation that has recently targeted Nassau County. These mailings are coming from “Property Profile, Inc.” who are recommending that all homeowners purchase a “Property Assessment Profile,” which “…provides a wealth of information on the property that can be used to verify property information is recorded correctly…” and also “…includes a complimentary copy of your current grant deed or other record of title.” The solicitations contain publicly available property information which can often mislead homeowners to believe that they are from an official governmental agency and that it is imperative the recipient acts on it quickly. Concerned by these deceptive practices, O’Connell wants homeowners to remember that all deeds for
property located in Nassau County are recorded and maintained at the county clerk’s office and only the clerk’s office can issue certified copies of
these records. However, these types of private companies continue to solicit homeowners to purchase a deed on their behalf, sometimes for more than
1,000 percent over the county clerk’s fees. To better inform consumers and protect them, O’Connell successfully advocated for state legislation that requires these types of solicitations to disclose that they are not affiliated with the county. Nevertheless, many homeowners continue to be impacted by these types of misleading services. O’Connell reminds residents it is not necessary to retain a service such as this to get a copy of your deed. Certified copies of deeds can always be obtained from the county clerk’s office for $5 to $10. She also recommends that Nassau residents protect themselves against fraudulent property record filings by registering with the “Property Fraud Alert Service” at www.nassaucountyny.gov/clerk/ PFA. Anyone interested in additional information can contact O’Connell’s office at 516-571-2660. —Nassau County

The Bourne Identity
(Images by MGM. Source: Movie Stills DB)
Throughout the past six films, Hunt is continually tasked with thwarting plots, oftentimes without the support of his own intelligence agency. Mission: Impossible seven and eight are slated for 2021 and 2022.
North by Northwest (1959)
Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense thriller became quite the classic film of the case of mistaken identity and has even been listed as one of the
greatest films of all time. New York City ad executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) is pursued by ruthless spy Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) after Thornhill is mistaken for a government agent. While being chased by Vandamm’s men, Thornhill ends up on a cross-country journey as a runaway, where he meets the stunning and mysterious Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint).
Bourne series
The Bourne series of American action films (Identity, Supremacy,
Ultimatum, Legacy and Jason Bourne) are based on the character Jason Bourne, a CIA assassin suffering from dissociative amnesia who must figure out who he is. The three novels were written by author Robert Ludlum, with Matt Damon playing the title role.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) Based on John le Carré’s 1974 novel of the same name, it is 1970s England, and the head of MI6 Control (John Hurt) dispatches
an agent (Mark Strong) to meet with a Hungarian general who knows the identity of a Soviet spy in the organization’s ranks. Unfortunately, the general dies before he can reveal the information. Undersecretary Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney) calls veteran agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) back from his forced retirement to find the double agent and stop the flow of critical British secrets to the Russians. The spy thriller also stars Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Toby Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch.

i Spy with my drunk eye... The shaken and stirred history of the martini
By STeve MoSCo SmoSco@antonmediagroup.com
T
he movies will lie to you like a drunken lout in a bar at 3 a.m. who promises to pay you back after just one more drink. In Sir Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, the secret agent, who told everyone his name, only drank a martini once. That’s right, once. Through 26 movies, about 60 years and 12 actors, every single time Bond said “shaken, not stirred,” he strayed from the source material. The one time a martini was mentioned, it was in the book version of Casino Royale when Bond christened the drink made with half gin and half vodka after special agent—and his love interest—Vesper Lynd. But then
Lynd commits suicide, and Bond never touches a martini ever again. He would drink bourbon, champagne and nearly every other spirit—but not martini. But, it’s fine. Let’s operate under the assumption that the world’s most famous international man of mystery constantly drank martinis whilst preying upon innuendo-named women across the globe and continue this spy-themed article on the origins of the martini.
Drunk History
There are more than a few bartenders and master mixologists throughout time that claim credit for inventing the martini. The most famous one comes from the Knickerbocker Hotel in New
York City, where bartender Martini di Arma di Taggia is purported to have poured the first martini prior to World War I. The feisty Italian’s recipe for the drink contained dry gin and dry vermouth, in equal parts, with orange bitters. But years before that, the drink is said to have been invented in Britain and named after the Martini & Henry rifles used by the British army because of the strong kick possessed by both the drink and the rifle. But the earliest mention of the martini by name comes from the San Francisco gold rush era at the Occidental Hotel when a bartender named Jerry Thomas concocted the cocktail for a miner that wanted to spend his gold nuggets on a special
beverage. And since the miner was headed for Martinez, CA, Thomas—the Lebron James of gold rush-era mixology—named the drink a martinez (close enough). The recipe for that drink lists a dash of bitters, two dashes of maraschino (cherry liquor), a full glass of sweet vermouth, a pony of Old Tom gin and a quarter slice of lemon—not quite a martini, but good enough for a dirty old prospector. Regardless of the actual origin, the drink gained a thirsty following. It even showed up in noted heavy drinker Ernest Hemingway’s 1929 book, A Farewell to Arms, with the proclamation, “I’ve never tasted anything so cool and clean...They make me feel civilized.”

James Bond consumed a martini only once in print—in Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale. always at a wedding. I like to order my martinis “extra dirty” with at least three olives. Perhaps what I really want at these functions is a bowl of olives, but it’s important to convey a sense of class at weddings. The one martini factor I cannot seem to come to grips with is that confounded martini glass. Just try to make it from the bar back to your table without spilling a drop of drink from that ridiculously designed vessel. You’re better off downing the martini at the bar, then asking the bartender to fill your empty glass with as many olives as possible.
O
ver the years, the martini has become the most classic of cocktails. Try this recipe for the libation in its simplest and purest form.
The Classic Martini
Martini Variations
3 oz. gin or vodka ½ oz. dry vermouth Pimiento-stuffed olives Ice cubes 1. Fill a shaker three-fourths of the way full with ice. 2. Add gin and vermouth; cover and shake until condensation forms on outside of shaker. 3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with olives. Editor’s Note: For en extra dry martini, use less vermouth and for a wet martini, use more.
From that early product placement and on to Bond’s first (and yes, only) utterance, the popularity of the martini never dried up. In fact, during the 1950s and ’60s, the “three martini lunch” became a fashionable way for day-drinking executives and businessmen to avoid doing any real work.
Booze, Olives & One Troublesome Glass Fancy variations aside, a traditional martini includes gin and dry vermouth served frigidly cold with a green olive or lemon garnish. And while the earliest versions of the drink boasted a gin to
vermouth ratio of 1:1, the amount of gin has increased as the years have passed. As for the distinction between a dry and a dirty martini, the dry martini has less vermouth, while a dirty one gets kinky with multiple dashes of olive brine. And as for the most appropriate times to drink a martini, for me, it’s
No other adult beverage has had so many people take so many liberties with its name. Sassy bartenders across the world have taken to lopping off the “mar” in favor of dozens of prefixes placed in front of the “tini.” There’s the appletini, bikinitini, saketini, rumtini, cosmotini, something called the “Pepe’s Flaming Love-tini,” and a painful number more. I’m not here to tell you what you should and shouldn’t drink, but I for one have no interest in anyone’s love-tini, especially Pepe’s Flaming version. If you want a martini variation, keep it simple. When vodka replaces the gin, that is what’s known as a “kangaroo,” and when the olive is replaced by a cocktail onion, it’s called a “Gibson.” And no matter what you do and no matter what Bond says, martinis are almost always stirred, not shaken. So class it up, keep it simple and get dirty with a martini. It might not be Bond’s favorite drink, but he’s a fictional character and you’re a real person, so who cares.

Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) (Eunice Gayson) during a baccarat game. In this infamous scene, viewers first hear the signature phrase “Bond, James Bond” as he introduces himself. She replies “Trench, Sylvia Trench” and earns her place as the first Bond Girl.
Honey Ryder
Also introduced in Dr. No, Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress) becomes what we think of today as the quintessential Bond Girl. The iconic scene when she emerges from the sea in a white
bikini, singing and carrying two large seashells caused sales of two-piece swimsuits to skyrocket. Halle Berry emulated this scene as Jinx Johnson in 2002’s Die Another Day.
Pussy Galore
In 1964’s Goldfinger, viewers meet Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman), the first of many characters in the franchise with unforgettable double entendres for names. After being knocked out with a tranquilizer gun, Bond wakes up to the stunning visage of Pussy Galore, much

Also known as Agent XXX, Major Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) is a KGB agent in 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me. Bond (Roger Moore) first encounters Anya Amasova in Egypt. They reluctantly join forces to track the true assassin called Jaws. Though constantly trying to outdo each other, their rivalry turns to affection and eventually love.

be the Spy A look at some of the best espionage-themed video games

ideo games are meant to give you experiences most of us wouldn’t otherwise have in real life. You can play as a loot-raiding pirate one moment and a sharpshooting cowboy the next. But what’s more fun than being a spy? There have been a multitude of games that have placed the players in the shoes of an intelligence agent, but only a handful that are beloved to this day. Here are some of the best espionage video games of all time.
GoldenEye 007 Of course we start with a game that has James Bond at the center of it. Rare Ltd.’s GoldenEye 007 (1997), based on the 1995 film GoldenEye, puts you in the shoes of the famous British secret agent as he tries to stop a satellite weapon known as “GoldenEye” from being used by criminals, which would cause global catastrophe. The first-person shooter allows you to move freely in a 3D world and try to complete objectives while also trying to avoid alerting guards of your presence. The Nintendo 64 game is well known as a significant turning point
in the first-person shooting genre as it showed that type of game could work on video game consoles, even introducing realistic elements like the stealth mechanics. There is also a multiplayer mode that is a split-screen deathmatch, where players must rack up the most kills against each other in order to win. Another well-received spy game, Perfect Dark, was seen as the spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007.
Metal Gear The brilliant Hideo Kojima is one of the best cinematic video game designers out there and is currently about to release his first independent game, Death Stranding. Before that, however, he got his start creating the Metal Gear series at Konami in 1987. A stealth game at its core, the series has you play as a special forces operative completing espionage missions to find a superweapon that has the ability to shoot nuclear weapons. There are a total of nine mainline video games, as well as 13 other spin-offs.
Spy Hunter The 1983 arcade game Spy Hunter, developed by Bally Midway, was

But without it, the game was still beloved. The vertical scrolling game puts you in the role of a spy trying to stop enemy vehicles with weapons installed in your own car. In arcade versions, you must use your steering wheel to stay on the road while using various buttons to shoot at enemies as well as keeping your foot on the pedal to keep up with them. The game has been re-released as recently as 2012 on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in Midway Arcade Origins.
The Operative: No One Lives Forever
SpyParty, an indie game by Chris Hecker, has one person play as a spy and another person assuming the role of sniper. The goal is for the spy to complete their mission in time and the sniper to try to stop them with one bullet.

Monolith Productions is not a major name in the gaming industry, but it is best known for creating The Operative: No One Lives Forever, which takes elements from 1960s spy-themed films, novels and TV shows. The action-packed, firstperson shooting game has you play as Cate Archer, a Scottish operative of UNITY who is tasked to maintain the world peace. Throughout the

games, you are sent on missions throughout the world, fighting armed enemies. What made this game so influential was the ability to complete missions in different ways depending on how you wanted to complete it, from sneaking around to going out guns-blazing. All the while, the game is rich in its character and, at times, incredibly funny.
SpyParty In terms of newer spy games, none has conjured up a cult following like SpyParty, a game that hasn’t even been fully released yet. The indie game by Chris Hecker has one player assume the role of a spy who must complete tasks while blending into a cocktail party. These missions include switching out statues, flirting with guests or communicating a secret code to an ambassador. At the same time, a second player is a sniper who must take out the spy before their mission is done but only has one bullet to do it. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen in a video game.
