Christopher Morley: A Life In Roslyn STORY
hroughout the summer, the Bryant Library is showcasing the life and work of Christopher Morley, one of the village’s most illustrious literary figures. Morley was a native of Bryn Mawr, PA, who made it to New York following his formal education at Haverford College and Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes scholar. In New York, Morley commuted from Roslyn and took on the big city. There, he established himself as one of the America’s leading men of letters in a more literate age. Following his death in 1957, Nassau County named an entire park for the man. Few people who use the amenities at Christopher Morley Park, including the golf course, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball, volleyball and soccer fields, plus the ice-skating rink and fitness trail are aware of whom it is named for. Morley’s Roslyn writing cabin has been transferred to the park, where it is open to the public.Ariel Morabito, the archives assistant at the library, described the exhibit. “At the Bryant Library Local History Collection, we make an effort to utilize items from the collection for dynamic visual displays and promotional materials,” Morabito said. Within the collection, there is an extensive cache of items related to former Roslyn Estates resident Christopher Morley (1890-1957), the celebrated author, essayist, playwright, and poet who has been the subject of several recent exhibits throughout the library. Additionally, a Morley digital information portal is a proud feature on the Local History Collection’s dedicated“Followingwebsite.theCOVID-19 2020 quarantine, the LHC created a display in the main exhibit case that focused on Morley’s role in the Millpond Playhouse-era of the War Memorial Building, which is the current Bryant Library location. The items in this display were then transferred to the larger exhibit case in the library’s Helen Glannon Meeting Room as part of a broader display. Along with reproduced images and artifacts of the Millpond Playhouse, this display included first-edition copies of Morley’s andsketchbooksoffromdrawingsworks, authoredonehisother images that emphasized the author’s connection to Roslyn. “Although this larger display was taken down to make room for another exhibit, we decided in May to commemorate Morley’s 132nd birthday by repurposing portions to create a new display on the main floor,” Morabito said. “This allowed us to reach more patrons and spark new interest in Morley as a local resident. The collection of images includes photos of Morley’s family, artwork by Cyril Lewis depicting his appearance at the Bryant Centennial, photos of his home, Green Escape, and other curiosities such as drawings and details from his many letters. It has been digitally recreated for the printing of this article and features images that are all on permanent digital display in our Christopher Morley Portal.”Linkfor Morley Portal: christopher-morlewww.localhistory.bryantlibrary.org/https://Atthelibrary,Morleyhasonefine non-fiction print collection. Morley’s New York is a compilation of newspaper columns Morley wrote from the 1920s to the 1950s. Morley was a man of letters. He edited the Saturday Review of Literature and co-founded the Baker Street Irregulars, a literary society dedicated to the study of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. He also served as an editor for the Book-Of-The Month Club. Following in the footsteps of William Cullen Bryant, Morley achieved fame as a columnist for The New York Evening Post. That he wrote for newspapers was common in that era. Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, and Ernest Hemingway all worked as journalists. Newspapers, in Morley’s day, were not necessarily journalism. The old America had political wars, but not so much the culture wars of today. Newspapers were also literary: Dense and numerous book reviews, poetry on page one. Not all of it was florid, either. Take 1955. Game One of the World Series between the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Marianne Moore, the famed poet and Brooklyn Dodger fan, who lived in Fort Greene, wrote a poem in honor of her beloved Bums, one that appeared on page one of The New York Daily News, then enjoying a circulation north of 2 million. Morley, too, wrote poetry, even though he was not identified with any school of verse. He was, to be sure, a promethean man of letters, publishing such well-received novels as Parnassus on Wheels, The Haunted Bookshop and Kitty Foyle, the latter of which was made into an Academy Award-winning movie. Morley was a prose poet of New York. He loved the city, searching out and celebrating any atom of it. What Dr. Johnson famously said about 19th century London was true of Morley’s early-20th century New York: Tired of it and you are tired of life. As with Alfred Kazin, Morley was a walker in the city. He loved the world of books and bookstores, of museums, of music halls, a city where one could constantly pursue the life of the mind. He loved, too, the world of tugboats and subways. Morley was a lifelong gourmet; he loved the city of restaurants and saloons. Morley championed the era of three-hour lunches when men could dine and drink and talk. A graduate of Oxford University and a lifelong Anglophile, Morley gravitated towards the world of clubs and male bonding. Morley was a man who made the most of his talents. Not only that, his books are still in print today. The library is at 2 Paper Mill Rd.

Some brief historical context regarding a recent series of neo-Nazi, anti-LGBTQIA local incidents
Reflect Long Island’s (Recent) Past
jburns@antonmediagroup.comBURNSJANET
Belanger is facing trial in Honolulu, where he was stationed as a U.S. Marine at one of several bases on Oahu until his other than honorable discharge in May 2021 for “extremist activity,” now known to include participation in a group called ‘Rapekrieg.’
While this particular wave of neo-Na zi-influenced incidents may be shocking to many of us, historians and reporters as well as modern-day activists suggest that today’s hateful behaviors in Nassau and Suffolk ar en’t a far cry from some of the worst violence and hate in living memory.
As the Kupferberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College explained for a recent exhibition, “In the mid-1930s an organization called the German-American Bund established 15 summer camps throughout the United States, including one in then-bucolic Yaphank on Long Island ... [The] many thousands that joined the Bund (not to be confused with the Jewish socialist group of the same name) were all supporters of the Nazi regime in Germany, its leaders, and its policies, including an openly expressed hatred for African-Americans and Jews.”
“There is hate and far-right, white-suprem acist politics taking hold and becoming more emboldened to take action, and that is an issue,” said Nassau resident Nia Adams, an anti-racism activist and organizer with Justice League NYC. “Following this very disturbing [flier] drop, we local organizers are still strategizing on next steps with emphasis and importance on centering community safety.”
AUGUST 24 - 30, 2022 • ANTON MEDIA GROUP4
As Kevin Knodell reported for the Star Advertiser, “Federal prosecutors in Honolulu allege there is also ‘substantial evidence’ that [Belanger] was planning an attack on a synagogue in New York, has ‘engaged in live exercises for to practice such an attack,’ and ‘made plans to engage in widespread homicide and sexual assaults to decrease the number of minority residents in the United States’...[while a] July 14 court memo by a federal agent with Joint Terrorism Task Force Pacific also alleges Belanger intended to rape ‘white women to increase the produc tion of white children.’”
Aiden Jay Kaplan, LMSW, Assistant Director of Operations and Programs at PFY, which supports LGBTQIA youth and education on Long Island, also commented by email, “PFY strongly stands against messages of hate that target any marginal ized or oppressed community. Long Island residents deserve to feel safe, affirmed, and respected in their homes, neighborhoods, and“Imagerycommunities.”andlanguage designed to ‘out’ LGBTQ+ people or use their identities in a defamatory way are damaging to that per son, to the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, and to our allies,” he continued. “The service members mentioned in the flyers that are circulating have extensive experience in their fields of practice; their transgender identities do not limit their abilities or impact their service. PFY proudly provides free Community Education and Professional Trainings to schools, organizations, and groups across Long Island.”
On Aug. 4, Long Island received national attention again when 74-year-old Robert Fehring was sentenced in Central Islip to 30 months in federal prison for mailing threats to shoot, bomb, or otherwise attack LGBTQIA events and groups (and even a Fire Island ferry) over a period of eight years.
history of promoting hatred, and of mali ciously and violently condemning everything from melanin and homosexuality to disabili ties and birth control, here on the island.
In fact, it’s not even a long drive to find a
And while Camp Siegfried, located 15 minutes from Selden in Yaphank, closed down in 1939, a widely publicized lawsuit in the mid-2010s established that the German American Settlement League, a sincegone-quiet organization that owns the land where a community of houses sits, was still observing internal by-laws stipulating that residents be “of German extraction.”
Rabbi Dr. Moshe Weisblum of Congregation Beth Tikvah similarly empha sized a collective, neighborly approach to this kind of insidious hate. “At this time of need, we must stand togeth er and resist ANY expression of bigotry against ANY minority in this country,” he commented by email. “Please don’t stay silent!”
In this 1930s-era photo from New York’s historical collection, men and women sit at picnic tables at Camp Siegfried in Yaphank wearing Nazi uniforms.
In the past few weeks, as waves of heat and weather have rushed Long Island, several major news incidents surrounding a central theme of hate have also drawn focus to the region. According to local authorities on history and hate on the island, there are also many precedents to consider.
As Anton Media Group and many other outlets reported last week, dozens of anti-semitic fliers were distributed in three Nassau communities on or around July 22. Several versions of the flier have been seen in multiple states, calling the Biden Administration or abortion or Disney or COVID-19 “[in] every single aspect [Jewish].” Ones found in Oceanside and Rockville Centre included head shots of high-ranking Biden administration or military members, labeling them as Jewish and/or (in bright letters) transgender people. As of press time for this issue, the Nassau County Police Department has not provided any updates on the search for the person or persons who left white-supremacist, anti-semitic pro paganda on lawns and cars. The New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not reply to requests for comment. Four days later, a pride flag was targeted at Oceanside Lutheran Church, where one was previously stolen last September. The church’s pride flag, meant to show welcome to all, was then targeted twice in one day last month. News 12 Brooklyn reported: “At around noon [on July 26], one person tried to pull a pride flag down—but couldn’t— instead, left the flag with a tear in its side. At around 7:30 p.m., someone else came and was able to steal the flag.”
As Cleve R. Wootson reported for the Washington Post in 2017, “One [historical] photo, which was included in the lawsuit, shows men in Italian Blackshirts uniforms marching at Camp Siegfried beneath a Nazi flag. The Blackshirts were the paramilitary wing of the National Fascist Party in Italy, one of Germany’s allies during World War II, and were distinguished by their black uniforms. Other photos from the New York Department of Records showed people sitting at picnic tables wearing Nazi military uniforms. The lawsuit also included a newspaper interview with Henry Hauck, the manager at what was then called Camp Siegfried. The reporter asked if camp members and visitors supported Nazi ideas. ‘Generally speaking, yes,’ Hauck replied, ‘but only as they concern Germany, not the United States.’” Nazi-related ideologies were also upheld, and often quite ugly, behind the scenes at the camp, too. Arnie Bernstein, author of Swastika Nation, explained to the New York Daily News in 2016 that the camp’s 1930s leaders were encouraging young people there to have sex or even to commit sexual assault on one another in order to “produce AryanToday, children.”LongIsland community leaders say that the ongoing rise in hateful incidents should push residents to recognize the trend, acknowledge it, and push back on what is, in fact, a very broad-ranging source of hate and violence.
Selden Ex-Marine’s Vile Charges
The same day, Adam Rawnsley and Seamus Hughes broke a story for Rolling Stone that drew international attention, relating to the June arrest of 25-year-old former U.S. Marine Matthew Belanger of Selden, who’s been under federal investigation for more than a year. Court documents revealed that Belanger, who was charged with illegally obtaining two rifles in Port Jefferson with help from an un named New York police officer, had previously been planning to attack and then alternately burn down an unnamed Long Island syna gogue, and to commit and promote mass acts of sexual and reproductive violence.
Until his arrest in New York in June, Belanger had been living back on Long Island with his mother and stepfather, one of whom may be an alleged co-conspirator in his case, based on documents reviewed by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser; the pair may also now be relocating to Florida.

The press conference was held at the upgraded New Hyde Park Station. In a statement, Hochul said, “Thanks to this extraordinary project, LIRR trains will run more often and passengers will have a smoother ride than ever. Our partners at the MTA and the hard-working women and men of organized labor delivered an on-time, under budget project—and that’s something worth celebrating.”

How can a mere 9.8 miles in a Long Island Rail Road system of hundreds of rail miles be so crucial? “What is the ripple effect throughout the system?” MTA Chairman Janno Lieber was asked at an Aug. 15 press conference with Governor Kathy Hochul.“It’spretty straightforward,” he replied at an event to herald the opening of the initial phase of the Main Line Third Track project. “This is the busiest part of the Long Island Railroad. Multiple branches feed into the mainline. So literally, any time there was any kind of a delay, it gummed up the whole system and a lot of those delays were due to the fact that you had those low bridges which frequently were getting struck. We eliminated those. Those grade crossings which were so dangerous and trains were having to slow down because crazy things were happening with those grade crossings. They were elim inated. It allows for much more consistent speeds and it also gives you the opportunity to work around a blockage when it develops. Altogether, [the third track] allows you to run 40 percent more service.”
LIRR service that will fuel economic oppor tunity, enhance the knowledge economy and provide increased access to jobs and entertainment.”TheExpansion Project, according to its website, “...includes the construction of an additional track along a 9.8-mile stretch of the railroad’s heavily traversed Main Line corridor between Floral Park and Hicksville. The project also includes elimination of eight street-level grade crossings, station renova tions, new signals and switches, substation replacements, and other upgrades to improve safety and enhance the reliability of passen ger rail Also, service.”sevenbridges along the 9.8-mile stretch have been replaced or modified. In her remarks, the governor stated, “Maybe you’ve had a little experience with delays, maybe you had a little bit of a bad experience once in a while, well, this is a chance to give us a whole new opportunity. A new chance to prove ourselves and what we’ve accomplished here. We’ve had too many delays with signalization, something we’ve focused on. And also just bringing quality of life issues, I mean, people need to be connected having Wi-Fi and handicapped accessibility, ADA compliant tracks.”

A reporter, addressing Hochul, noted that ridership is still down from pre-pandemic levels and asked how it could return. The governor responded that “...we are now starting to see an increase in ridership. But people needed a few things. One is they need convenience. They need reliability. And that’s what we’re offering here with this a further commitment to ensuring that all Long Island commuters will have a smooth ride.”
According to a press release, stations will feature “expanded platforms, digital signage, new platform canopies, furnishings and ac couterments including benches, shelters and signage, CCTV security cameras to improve safety, Wi-Fi; USB charging stations, artwork, new bike racks and plazas with green space.
“I spent 14 years in local government,” she observed. “Whenever our transportation agencies or the DOT had a project, they operated in a vacuum. They didn’t care what the locals thought a long time ago. Well, we have changed that at every single level. The community’s voices need to be heard, respected, their concerns addressed. And that is why there is such support for this from the neighboring communities as well. So we’re proud of that as well.”
She also touted the many ways 3TC con struction—a consortium of three companies that won the contract back in 2017—did it best to minimize noise and dirt and institute good environmental practices.
Lieber, addressing the same question, stat ed, “People may be traveling a little differently to and from work at different times. So more service means more convenience and with East Side access, Madison Avenue service to Grand Central, all of a sudden, for roughly half of our Long Island ridership, you’re going to cut 30 to 45 minutes off of their commute. So convenience and more service. That’s part of what we believe is going to attract people back to mass transit.”
Each station is now more ADA accessible, featuring new ramps, a pedestrian overpass and new ADA parking spaces.”

As an example, speaking of New Hyde Park, Lieber said that service will increase by 67 percent on weekdays, from 56 to 94 trains.
Thanks to the removal of grade crossings, neighbors will not have to hear train horns and crossing bells. Traffic backups at the crossing gates and truck collisions with railroad bridges—which necessitated bridge inspections and therefore train delays—are also a thing of the past. Speaking of grade crossings, Hochul said that “We’ve had over six fatal collisions at grade crossings on the LIRR over the main line over a 10-year period. And in my book that is far too many families that are devas tated by that tragedy. That’s what we’re in the business of preventing as well. So better transit, less traffic, less noise.” The governor and Lieber affirmed that the project was on schedule and $100 million below budget.

Fast food restaurants like McDonald’s and Burger King took the hamburger out of backyard barbecues, making it a staple of American culture. Sit-down restaurants soon caught on, dressing them up with extras like mushrooms, different types of cheese, bacon and, in some cases,Combinationseggs. of toppings and condiments on burgers are practically limitless. If it makes you happy, pile it on top. Even the patties themselves don’t have to be made of beef anymore. You would think there is no right or wrong way to eat a hamburger with all the possible combinations.You’dbewrong.Accordingtothe experts at TGI Fridays, we’ve been eating hamburgers wrong this entire time. They are trying to convince people that you should be eating your hamburger upside down. That’s right, upside down.
Apparently, those billions of people who have eaten those billions of McDonald’s ham burgers have it all wrong. If you want to truly enjoy the taste of your hamburger, you should flip it over.“Burger experts” from Friday’s claim that because the “top” of the bun is larger, if you flip it over, all the juices and flavor from the burger and toppings will be ab sorbed in the bun when you bite into it. In addition, your tongue meets the taste of the extras first and the burger second. In my experience, the burger isn’t inside my mouth long enough to taste much of any thing. The taste is irrelevant if I’m eating a fast-food hamburger while driving. I’m just trying to keep the ketchup from dripping on my shirt. To be honest, I’m not paying any attention to which side is up while trying to negoti ate traffic on the LIE. Because the suggestion came from the TGI Friday’s Instagram account, I thought it was just a promotion, a way to stir up traffic on social media. However, my job as a journalist is to not only comment on the news but to separate fact from fiction for you, my dear readers. To test the upside-down theory, I chose a Whopper with all the trimmings from Burger King. For those unfamiliar, the oversized burger patty comes topped with onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, and mayonnaise. The top half of the bun is rounded and much thicker than the bottom half. Since the Whopper requires two hands to maneuver from the wrapper into my mouth, I picked it up, turned it over, and took a bite. There was a flavor explosion as the toppings and condiments pushed their way through the “top” of the bun and onto my waiting taste buds. It was
Based upon my knowledge of the MTA and previous experience working for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), here are the most recent cost estimates for the following system expansion and enhancement projects that the MTA is considering to include in the next 20-Year Plan. The current growing inflation, potential recession, ongoing supply chair issues, increasing fuel prices, rising material costs and labor shortages will only result in cost estimates going up over coming years, prior to award of any construction contracts for these potential projects.
Most of us started enjoying hamburgers at about three or four years old. My father was a butcher, so red meat was always a part of my mother’s repertoire in our family. As a result, I’ve had more than 60 years of experience with the great American burger. I’m a medium-rare kind of guy, but I’ve never turned down the occasional overcooked hockey puck. Add some cheese, slap on some ketchup and stick it be tween two halves of a hamburger roll and it’s ready to go. Along with hot dogs (mustard—no ketchup), they are as American as apple pie.

Larry Penner is a transportation advocate, historian and writer, who previously worked for the Federal Transit Administration Region 2 New York Office. This included the development, review, approval and oversight for billions in capital projects and programs for the MTA, NYC Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Metro North Rail Road, MTA Bus along with 30 other transit agencies in NY & NJ.
The MTA will evaluate this list of projects. They have not been selected or funded but will be comparatively evaluated for consideration on a level-playing field for future Five Year Capital Programs. Why the need to evaluate the $6.9 billion Second Avenue Phase 2 project?. MTA has previously said that based upon receipt of a Full Funding Grant Agreement from the Federal Transit Administration, construction would start in 2023. Many of these projects would have to be admitted into the FTA Capital Investment Grant (CIG) national competitive discretionary system expansion core capacity program. They would be competing against others for future federal funding. It should be a higher priority for each operating agency including NYC Transit bus, subway and Staten Island Railway, MTA bus (the old private NYCDOT franchised bus operators taken over by MTA in 2005), LIRR and MNRR to first reach a state of good repair for existing fleet, stations including making all ADA accessible, signals, interlockings, track, power, yards and shops. The same is true for ensuring that maintenance programs for all operating agencies assets are fully funded and completed on time to ensure riders safe and reliable service

We must remember that our experiences are just as important as where they lead us to. Sometimes, we need to take our eye off the prize and think about all that has happened in the course of our journeys. Our lives are transient and ephemeral. To really treasure them properly we must value the in-between moments too. Because it’s not just about plan ning for the future—it’s about living the present fully as well. In today’s fast-paced world we are constantly looking for shortcuts. We always seem to be in a rush to accomplish our goals in the quickest and most efficient way possible. Often, we are so busy planning ahead that we forget to focus on where we are right now. Eleanor Roosevelt said: “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why we call it ‘The Present’.” Remember, life is like rope: you can grab only the piece in front of you. With that in mind, take hold of the present, appreciate it completely and only then begin to plan for the future. One of my favorite ancient parables involves the story of an indigent woman whose children were constantly starving. One day, she came home with an egg. Lovingly, she gathered her excited children and said: “Dear children, you have nothing to worry about. I found this egg. But listen to me closely. Even though we may we hungry, we are not just going to eat it. Instead, I’m going to give it to my neighbor, so that his hen can hatch the egg. Then, we will let the chick grow up—but even then, we won’t eat it. Instead, we will wait for it to lay more eggs and when those eggs hatch, we will have many chickens. Eventually, we’ll sell the chickens and buy a nice cow. But we won’t eat the cow either. We’ll simply wait for it to birth its calves and afterwards we will sell the cows and buy a large field. And because of our patience, we’ll be rewarded with bounty and we won’t be hungry anymore.”

What a difference a pandemic makes. Even though the world is two years-plus removed from COVID-19 throwing the world into a lockdown, music lovers are still enjoying the fruits of forced solitude. For Goo Goo Dolls fans, it’s in the shape of Chaos in Bloom, the band’s recently released 13th studio album. Recorded in Dreamland Studios, a remote space in Woodstock, NY, this collection of songs also marks the production debut of vocalist/guitarist John Rzeznick, who founded an approach the band had last taken on its 1995 breakthrough album A Boy Named Goo. “It was like sort of going to camp,” Rzeznick responded when asked about recording in this manner. “I wanted to get everyone away from the distractions. I love making albums in Los Angeles and New York because it’s exciting, fun and they have everything that you need. And the greatest studios in the country are all in Los Angeles. That’s normally what we do. And we did some of the overdubs and the final stuff out in L.A., New York and all over the place. But the main body of and put together in that fashion. That was an observation that I had made from watching live YouTube videos of us. The live show is a lot greasier and tougher. I thought that we should try and bring this into the studio. So it was fun in that way, because you’re actually getting to feel how Robby [Takac] and the drummer were playing together or how the three of us were playing together. It’s tight, but it still has a looser vibe to it.”

While the band’s downtime yielded Chaos in Bloom, along with 2020’s It’s Christmas All Over and last year’s EP 21, Rzeznick felt it was the logical response to psychologically responding to the world grinding to a stop in the early days of the pandemic.

On July 13, the Nassau County Museum of Art (NCMA) introduced its new exhibit “Other Worlds Than This.” The exhibit explores both the supernatural and sub conscious mind. With a primary focus on Surrealism, the exhibition attempts to navigate a world beyond our own. Surrealism rose to pop ularity in the 1920s and flourished for years to follow. As the genre grew in popularity, leading surreal ists – Magritte, Tanguy, Dalí, Ernst and Masson, to name a few–emerged. The movement rejected rationalism, as artists believed that it suppressed their imagination and limited their“Yourartwork.guides are some of the greatest artists in history whose sense of the supernatural is so vivid that they painted and sculpted the spirit realm as if it were real,” Charles Riley, director of Nassau County Museum of Art, says. “That’s how the Surrealists opened windows to their dreams.” As Sigmund Freud began to publish his work on the subconscious mind, surreal ists became influenced by his theories. One of the leading characteristics of the Surreal ism Movement is its juxtapo sition of imagery. Surrealist artists often depict discon nected, strange or opposite objects in the same piece. The exhibit explores many of the themes that emerged during the Surrealism Move ment. With the juxtaposition of images, the exhibit gazes into subconscious patterns as patrons examine the meaning of these disjointed associations.Althoughthese pieces may seem full of distorted and strange connections, all of the pieces displayed attempt to explore the spirit world and deities that transcend. In addition to hosting some of the leading surrealist art ists—including Magritte, Tan guy, Ernst and Dalí—the mu seum explores surreal worlds through ancient sculptures and tribal textiles. Although these objects may not fit into the Surrealism Movement in the traditional sense, they, likewise, explore worlds full of spirits and extra-sensory p henomena.“Allthebig names are here: De Chirico, Dali, Magritte, Tanguy and Ernst,” Riley says about the diversity displayed in this exhibit. “But the super natural goes way back, three thousand years to ancient Olmec and Shang sculptures, Old Master prints and tribal textiles.”Themuseum hosted a reception where donors and friends of the museum had the opportunity to explore ethereal worlds further. At the reception Christian Winters, an English artist whose work is currently on display at the museum, at tended to host a seance. The seance was held at a table Winters—who had success fully completed seances at various other receptions— had designed for a previous exhibit. As guests gathered around the table, Winters at tempted to conjure the spirit of William Blake, a famous artist and poet. As the seance began, Winters sat blindfold ed with a pen in his hands as he attempted to summon Blake’s spirit. As the seance continued, Winters began to draw scenes that came to him. The exposition at the reception served as a con tinuation of the exhibit itself, guiding patrons through a world of spirits and phantoms, just as Surrealists reached into other seanceWinter’sworlds.performativeallowedvisitorsto see that process in real time. With the traditional surrealist artists and ancient sculptures and fabrics, the museum has once again hosted an exhibit that remains true to the movement it honors, while also serving its patrons with diversity. “No matter where, no mat ter when, the belief in spirit worlds remains as strong as ever, and this show brings it all vividly to life,” says Riley. The exhibit runs through No vember 2022. The museum is located at One Museum Dr., in Ros lyn. The arboretum, trails and sculpture garden are open daily from 9 a.m. to dusk. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is closed on Mondays. Visit www.ncma.org for details.

“I feel proud to be able to share my work with everyone and being able to communicate the beauty I perceive through my paintings is a great blessing to me,” Iqbal says. She has had the opportunity to have her work exhibited in several galleries, throughout the New York metropolitan area, including Room By Room and Barnes Gallery in Garden City, at Sam’s Art Gallery in Flushing, Queens and at My Studio in Port Washington.
Iqbal has also participated in several exhibitions throughout Lahore, Pakistan where she obtained her Master’s Degree in Fine Art, with a focus on figure drawing. She has studied oil painting, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, acrylic and many other techniques. “I look forward to exhibiting more of my work soon,” she says. Over the past two decades, Iqbal has received many awards and recognition for her work, including “Best In Show” at a recent exhibit at Emerge Gallery in Saugerties in January 2022. She earned first place in a rotational art exhibit and second place in a competition at My Studio Port Washington. She has received honorable mentions from the Flushing Art League and in an Eastern Long Island exhibit for her work. Iqbal has been selected for many solo exhibitions also. “Being able to share and exhibit my work has been the biggest honor,” Iqbal says.
Welcome to blvd. Now that we’re at the height of the summer, the blvd. staff is proud to bring an array of topics to our readers that touch on the best of style & fashion, design & decor, entertainment and so much more, all in one place. Our first stop is at the newly opened “Other Worlds” art exhibit at Nassau County Museum of Art, which we sent Fordham University student Hannah Devlin to explore. On the cover, we share with you to Pakistani-American painter Nayyar Iqbal, whose work encompasses bold colors and broad strokes and is on display at the museum’s current exhibit. Allow us to introduce you to another newly arrived food player on the block at the wildly popular and ever-growing restaurant row on the west side of Roosevelt Field Mall. Special sections managing editor Christy Hinko visited Nomiya, a Japanese infusion restaurant that’s joined the ranks among the heavy hitters and is sure to garner a who’s who in dining and an exclusive reservation list once the secret gets out. In the meantime, given how hot it is outside, we’re showcasing a twist on cocktails. Flocktails to be exact. Find out what the buzz is around the creation of a new canned cocktail by three brothers from the Island. In Section II, managing editor Dave Gil de Rubio does a deep dive with TV chef Nick Stellino, who has spent the past three decades-plus making his hay on public television via a number of shows including Storyteller in the Kitchen. Fashionwise, we ask the question—men in skirts? Absolutely and done with class and style. Dressed to Kilt is now the largest and most prestigious Scottish fashion event in the world and has graced Long Island more than once. The show was co-founded by Sir Sean Connery 20 years ago. In recent shows Gerard Butler, Kiefer Sutherland, Kyle MacLachlan, Ivanka Trump, Mike Myers and Craig Ferguson have all walked the runway. We’ll also feed your mind with a historical read written by the talented and knowledgeable Trav S.D. about Great Neck’s own, the great Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960), who was best known for his collaborations with Richard Rodgers. Lastly, Christy Hinko has an exclusive chat with Tony-nominee Sharon D. Clarke about the Broadway return of Death of a Salesman. Pourmoradi’s most recent book, Empowered Wom en Empower Girls , was published at the end of 2021 and was inspired by the number one question people ask Pourmoradi: How do I empower my daughters and young girls in my life? “The fact of the matter is if we really want to empow er the next generation of girls, we need to empower ourselves, which is the real work,” explained Pourmora di. “It starts with mothers and teachers or mentors; if we are not embodying that true empowerment, then it’s really hard to pass it along.” The book is a downto-earth guide to inspire women to lead by example. Pourmoradi shares how to become the highest version of yourself and how to give that gift of confidence to the next“Wegeneration.cannotskip that step of doing the inner work and healing,” says Pourmoradi. “Then we take it outward and live as an example of what it is to be an empow eredYoungwoman.”girlslook up to the women in their lives, wheth er it is a family member, coach or teacher. This book details ways women how to fix that so the young girls around them have a positive role model to learn from. “Parts of empowerment is even not gossiping. We go around disempowering ourselves in so many ways whether it is talking bad about ourselves or of some body else or having really low vibe conversations that aren’t adding any value to the planet,” explained Pour moradi. “So the very first part of my book is how do we disempower ourselves without even knowing it and once we know that and can transform that then we can really step into the journey of actually chapterourselves.”empoweringAttheendofeveryin
Great Neck author and entrepreneur Melody Pourmoradi published her second book, Empowered Women Empower Girls. The book is a practical guide to inspire young women to lead by example and become the best version of themselves.

In addition to being an author, Pourmoradi has multiple outlets where she shares tips on female empowerment and leadership. Pourmoradi has built an incredible resource for young girls and women with an online blog, podcast and numerous workshops to spread knowledge and information on empowerment“WhenIwas a little girl, I grew up with a great deal of anxiety, and now I’m very transparent about being a woman living with anxiety,” says Pourmoradi. “But when I was a little girl, I didn’t know that I had a plethora of inner tools that already lived inside of me. We didn’t have an open dialogue about anx iety and mental health, it just wasn’t a thing, and there was a stigma associated with it.” “As I discovered this world of psychology and human potential, I started to really hone in on my own inner tools and learn how to calm myself down, how to take a deep breath and how to claim my power back,” says Pourmoradi.Aroundeight years ago, Pourmoradi began hosting empowerment workshops at her home in Great Neck. More and more parents began requesting specific topics to be covered, and the workshops grew. “Our goal is empowering girls, and just one person isn’t going to make as large an impact as we want to make,” Pourmoradi says. In 2015, she expanded the program to function more like a school, wherein other women could teach the workshops and make an impact while making a profit to create a career. Now, more than 180 differ ent facilitators are running the curriculum in different parts of the world.
“If there is any message that GIRLIFE has, it’s that every young girl is powerful beyond measure and simply having that knowledge is a game changer,” says Pour moradi.Pourmoradi’s dedication to empowering the next generation led her to write two books that guide girls and women to lead positive and productive lives. Her first book, XOXO, From A Girl Who Gets It , was published in 2018. Although the book is categorized as a children’s book, Pourmoradi likes to say that the book is for girls and women from ages five to 105 because it shares and acknowledges the powers that already exist within women of all ages.

ONSANSHAMMERSTEINRODGERS BY TRAV S.D. Born of a July 12, the great Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960). Best known today for his decadeand-a-half collaboration with Richard Rodgers, today we present a look at the wonderful work he did apart from that partnership.
1930, an Arthur Hammerstein produced show with some material by Oscar, was a flop but is notable for being the last Broadway show starring W.C. Fields. After this, there was also The Gang’s All Here with Ted Healy, Free for All with Jack Haley, and East Wind with Joe Penner (all in 1931). And he contributed some material to Olsen and Johnson’s Hellzapoppin (1938).Then, around the time he began collaborating with Rodgers, one last major show without him: Taking a cue from Mike Todd’s 1939 Hot Mikado, Billy Rose produced Carmen Jones (1943) putting Bizet’s original Carmen score to a new contemporary libretto by Hammerstein, and an all-black cast, with Muriel Smith and Muriel Rahn switching off in the title role. As an all-black American opera with a tragic plot, it also bears a certain relationship to Porgy and Bess. One likes to think that the original Oscar Hammerstein, the songwriter’s grandfather who had a penchant for democratizing access to opera, would have been proud.
Otto Preminger adopted this show into a 1954 film starring Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte, helping to keep it in public circulation.Thelocal angle to this story; Hammerstein was a longtime resident of Great Neck. He later purchased a farmhouse and estate in Buck’s County, which is where he died of stomach cancer in 1960. Trav S.D. is the author of No Applause, Just Throw Money: The Book That Made Vaudeville Famous. Visit www.travsd.com to learn more about Hammerstein and myriad other famous celebrities and historical topics.

Hammerstein was the namesake of his paternal grandfather, Oscar Hammerstein I, impresario of both opera and vaudeville, and the son of Willy Hammerstein, genius booker of Hammerstein’s Victoria, New York’s top vaudeville theatre for a time. He attended Columbia and studied to be a lawyer but the lure of the family business was too great. Though he had promised his father he would steer clear of show biz, following Willy’s demise in 1914, he gradually worked his way in. Vaudeville vets starred in many of his early productions, many of them written in collaboration with Otto Harbach. Frank Tinney was in Tickle Me (1920) and Daffy Dill (1922). Queen O’ Hearts (1922) featured Nora Bayes and Harry Richman. Gypsy Jim, a straight play penned by Hammerstein in 1924, starred Leo Carillo. The operetta Rose-Marie (1924-26) is probably the earliest of his shows to be well-remembered, on account of its three movie versions and the many covers of the campy “Indian Love Call”. The 1936 screen version with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald is undoubtedly the best known, although there was also one in 1954 with Howard Keel, Ann Blyth, Fernando Llamas, Bert Lahr and Marjorie Main. A 1928 silent version naturally had no songs but starred up-and-comer Joan1925sCrawford.Sunnywas one of a series of hit starring vehicles for Marilyn Miller and featured Jack Donahue and Pert Kelton, with music by Jerome Kern. It was made into a Hollywood film, also starring Miller, in Show1930. Boat (1927), based on the Edna Ferber novel is, in the view of many, the greatest of all Hammerstein shows and one of America’s favorite musicals. Florenz Ziegfeld produced the original production, with music by Jerome Kern, book by Hammerstein, and lyrics by Hammerstein and P.G. Wodehouse. The cast included Charles Winninger, Edna May Oliver, Tess Gardella (Aunt Jemima), Puck and White, Helen Morgan, and Jules Bledsoe. Paul Robeson for whom the part of Joe was written, appeared in later productions. This is a stellar line-up of talent, and they ended up producing a landmark, pivotal Broadway show, one of the first of the so-called integrated musicals (meaning the songs are integrated into the show, i.e., they help tell the story. Although this has to have been one of the first racially integrated shows, too). The (still) popular songs from the show include “Ol’ Man River”, “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man”, “Make Believe”, and Helen Morgan’s show stopper as Julie,There“Bill”.are three major film versions of the novel, the latter two based primarily on the musical. The 1929 version is based strictly on the book and is essentially a silent, with non-sync sound, music, a little audible dialogue, and just a couple of numbers from the show. It features Laura La Plante as Magnolia, Alma Rubens as Julie, Otis Harlan as Cap’n Andy, Neely Edwards as Schultzie and Stepin Fetchit as Joe. The 1936 version (the best all ’round) was directed by James Whale and has much of the Broadway cast, with the notable addition of Irene Dunne and Allan Jones. The 1951 updated, color version has far less charm, although we do have the bonus of Joe E. Brown as Cap’n Andy and Agnes Moorehead as Parthy (the rest of the cast, Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson and Ava Gardner are fairly HelenployedSweetbyLovedRubyfeaturedducedrememberedNext…severalsnoozeville).lesswellshows:GoodBoy(1928),pro-byHammerstein,thehitKalmarandsong“IWanttoBebyYou”,popularizeditssingerHelenKane.Adeline(1929)em-IreneFranklinandMorgan.Ballyhooof

After having successfully opened Keki Modern Cakes—the bakery that single-handedly brought the viral bouncy cheesecake trend stateside—founders Ajay Chawla, Lawrence Wai and Moul Kim sought to introduce Nassau County to sophisticated East Asian fare with a unique, local spin. A tenured sushi chef who is also trained in the art of robata, Chef James Choi draws from his Korean heritage and experiences in Japanese kitchens. The menu at Nomiya features what can be deemed Japanese guacamole in the form of Nomiya signature Avo cado Bomb. Chef envelops spicy tuna in thin slices of avocado, then serves the ‘bomb’ atop a bed of tempura flakes and housemade ube and lotus chips. Signature rolls include the locally-sourced Suffolk Roll, a kani and cucumber roll topped with torched yellowtail belly and a seven-spice shichimi sauce, and the smoky Nomiya Roll, a tuna asparaMiso Black Cod Photos by Scott Levy Nomiya’s specialty roll Nomiya offers sake and soju.Nomiya is now open. gus maki garnished with spicy lobster which arrives tableside billowing AlsowheatisdrinkmadeorvescentTigercream-coloredmenu,umwith“dragon’ssesame-scentedbreath.”Guestscanpairtheirmealoneoftheelevenpremibottlesofsakelistedonthesuchastheunfiltered,YukiToraSnowNigoriorbright,efferUkaJunmaiDaiginjo;optforarefreshingcocktailwithsoju—thenationalofKoreawhichcommonlydistilledfromandsweetpotato.availablearehousemade sodas flavored with either lychee, yuzu, or mandarin, and imported wine and beer selections.Nomiyahas a seating capac ity of 75, as well as outdoor seating, on the west side of Roosevelt FIeld Mall (630 Old Country Rd., in Garden City). FROM THE KITCHEN OF NICK STELLINO
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 4 garlic cloves, thickly sliced 1/4 cup chopped carrots 1/4 cup chopped celery 1/4 cup chopped onions 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
Living The Dream Three-plus decades and 12 cookbooks later, Stellino is at a point in his life where he gets to pursue his whims, one of which is sharing his love and passion for“YouSicily.can pretty much say I’m retired,” Stellino says. “I reached a point in my life that the first thing I do when I get up in the morning is decide what I’m going to cook today and what is the new thing that I’m going to learn, even if I fail. The only project I’m interested in now is a history of Sicily and the importance of Sicily as an element. It’s so incredibly spread throughout America in the little part of Italian-Americanism that we see in action every day. But I do want to show Sicily for the beauty that it is. I don’t want to do one of these shows where you see me on the forefront of a beautiful view behind me when I go, ‘This is the most beautiful thing you can see. Let me take you down there.’ Before I do a show like that, I’m going to shoot myself in the head.”Ifthere is anything Stellino is proudest of it is how he’s transferred his love of food, culture and storytelling to a devoted public television fan base at a time when culinary shows on the Food Network and HGTV have come to the fore in the past couple of decades.
2 pounds of Brussels sprouts trimmed and cut in half 4 strips of bacon cut into ½-inch pieces
Genes Make The Man Family is at the epicenter of what makes Stellino tick, dating back to the adoration he had for his mother (“...she was not only beautiful, but the most delicate woman I’ve ever seen in my life.”) and his art salesman father, who helped introduce him to his lifelong love of food and cooking while commandeering the grill at a client’s summertime soiree that Stellino and his family were attending (“I wanted to be the guy people look at because he’s the only one who has the magic to make the food taste like that.”) Stellino’s cooking origin story is worth recounting where we find our then 12-year-old hero more interested in his host’s teenage daughter before his pater familias won over the cooking progeny’s attention.

1 pound ziti, penne, or rigatoni pasta

One lb. of fresh strawberries trimmed and finely diced into ¼ inch dice. ¼ cup of sugar 3 tablespoons of marsala wine

Divide the strawberries among four wine glasses or dessert bowls. Top with the zabaglione and some more strawberries.
“When it comes to my teaching people about cooking, it’s about me teaching them about something I love and I want them to learn to love it the way that I love it,” Stellino says. “You not only have to take baby steps, but you also have to be skillful in showing people how you do it, how people can do it themselves and look how easy it is. If you look at any of my cooking shows from the beginning to the end—even my most complicated recipes, including demi-glace and reduction of sauces—by the time you watch it, you’ll feel like you can do that. That is my greatest skill, otherwise, I can tell you there are tons of people who can cook better than me, are better-looking than I am and are far more successful than I am. But that one skill that I just described and the way I described it where you’re not afraid and you come in and feel like an old friend is teaching you. That’s my skill and I don’t need to put it up because what you see is pretty much what you get.”
With Zabaglione
Betting On Himself Raised on constantly hearing about “...a land on the other side of the sea called America, where anything is possible,” the fiercely independent Stellino made his way across the pond, where he landed a job as an insurance company market research analyst. When he quickly realized that he had a better understanding of the financial assets he was being hawked by the sales reps who were pitching him, Stellino informed his wife Nanci that he was going to offer his services to the head manager at the local Merrill Lynch office. He sailed through the interviews, trained at the World Trade Center and spent the next eight years making his nut, despite admitting to being “...the worst stockbroker you’d ever seen.” What Stellino did have was the passion that drove him, particularly when it came to an idea he’d fallen in love with. It’s a character trait that carried him into the kitchen, when he decided to quit this lucrative chapter of his life after a client lost 30 percent of his net asset value after Stellino was instructed by higher-ups in what he later realized was a rigged transaction. And once again, guidance came from family in the form of an exchange he had with an uncle who was on his deathbed back in Italy. “My uncle was in so much pain and so full of morphine, that he wasn’t making any sense and had turned into a former ghost of the man he was,” Stellino shares. “At one point, the nurse asks us to leave because we’re tiring him out. Everybody wanted go hug and kiss him and were crying—me too. And then he grabs my hand as I’m leaving, looks at me straight in the eyes and says to me in Italian, ‘Don’t let go of your dreams. Don’t do things that keep you prisoner.’ How did he know that I was so unhappy? I never spoke about it. I hardly spoke about it to my wife or my mom or dad. What did he see and how did he awaken like that? It kind of impacted me in the most—it was devastating in a certain way.” Rolling The Dice Stellino returned to the States, evened up his ledger and walked away from a finance job in a year where he made the most money in his career up to that point. It was at this juncture the epiphany came that he wanted to open a restaurant with money he’d saved, something he’d have to explain to his wife, who was unaware of his radical career pivot.“This was the kind of decision we always made together,” he explains. “I knew I was in for some problems. I popped in and says that I had a great idea. Because I loved cooking and we were cooking all the time, I said that I was going out to buy a restaurant and was going to go into the restaurant business. She looked at me—and by the way she wasn’t upset. I’m thinking, ‘Man, this broad is awesome.’ She says that was great but maybe wouldn’t it be better to get a job at the restaurant first? Just to see how things work out and I could learn how to run the business.”

“My father was invited by one of his best customers to an event he was hosting,” Stellino explains. “My father asked if he could bring the food because he had this great connection to the butcher. He was a salesman all the time—I remember he had this blue, double-breasted suit with a white shirt and a great knitted tie that he had bought in Rome —I was in love with the whole thing. [My father] started laying out the meat. The barbecue was an old-school one made out of cast iron with the charcoal and the wood used to get the fire started. And even though we were up there in the mountains where the temperature was in the seventies, it was still warm. Next thing you know, he starts peeling off the jacket, the vest, the cigarette is still there. He’s got an undershirt on—I think you guys call it a wife beater. I’m looking at him and looking around and see everyone in the finest custom suits—beautiful ladies in jewels with long cigarettes talking—but everyone was looking at my dad. The man looked like [crap] to say the very least. He was schvitzing and I’m thinking, ‘I want to be him.’”

And while Stellino didn’t have the background to run a kitchen, he took a job as a dishwasher and wound up apprenticing to become a head chef and going so far as to return to Italy and work without pay in a number of restaurants in his homeland. And while he eventually wound up as the head chef at Santa Monica restaurant Drago and shooting a number of pasta sauce commercials, that same quest for a new and interesting challenge led to his expressing to wife Nanci a desire to have his own television show. “I looked at my wife and said the money we put aside for a restaurant should instead go towards me going into television,” he recalls. “I wanted my own TV show. From there, it took me two years and 2,365 phone calls—2,354 no’s and one yes.”

Producers Cindy Tolan, Marianne Elliott and Chris Harper (Elliott & Harper Productions) and Kwame Kwei-Armah have teamed up to bring the critically hailed Young Vic/West End production of the Miller masterpiece to “WhenBroadway.thisproduction played at the Young Vic in 2019, we heard from so many young people seeing it for the first time, who said they felt like the play was written specifically for them and for this era,” says Tolan. “We’re excited to bring that feeling to New York audiences, and we hope that the show’s timeless relevance resonates in the same way.”
Tony Award winner André De Shields (Hadestown) will join the cast as Willy’s brother, Ben. Khris Davis (Heart of a Lion, Sweat, Atlanta, Judas and the Black Messiah) also boards as the Lomans’ son Biff. “When I arrived back in New York, I thought, ‘I am here; I am here in New York where the play is set and I am here to soak up all of that wealth of history and culture that the show brings,” says Clarke. “I am not saying that it is not authentic in London, but I am in the states with an American cast, they inform me in different ways because they are American and genuine; it feeds me. ” Also joining the production are Blake DeLong as Howard/ Stanley, Lynn Hawley as The Woman/Jenny, Grace Porter as Letta/Jazz Singer, Kevin Ramessar as Musician, Stephen Stocking as Bernard, Chelsea Lee Williams as Miss Forsythe, and The Wire’s Delaney Williams as Charley, Willy’s neighbor and onlyOpeningfriend. night is set for Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Hudson Theatre (141 West 44th Street), and the show will run for a strictly limited 17-week engagement starting Monday, Sept. 19. BY CHRISTY HINKO Wendell Pierce (Serious Money, The Piano Lesson, The Wire, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and Sharon D. Clarke (Caroline, Or Change) are set to reprise their acclaimed performances as Willy and Linda Loman, for which Clarke received the Olivier Award for Best Actress and Pierce was nominated for Best Actor while on Death of a Salesman on the Young Vic / West End production in London. Blvd. had a chance to speak with Clarke about this amazing opportunity to bring such a staple in American storytelling back to audiences, and to reprise her award-winning role as “ILinda.feel very blessed to have a chance to find out more about these characters,” says Clarke. “I cannot believe that I have just finished Caroline, Or Change on Broadway and am coming back to do what is considered America’s Hamlet; it is a classic and I am doing it with Wendell.” She is overjoyed. “For Wendell to come to London and tell the story of Death of a Salesman and then to be able to bring it back to his home [country] and have it seen by America is just phenomenal,” saysTheClarke.anticipation is already growing for what may be dubbed a transforming production.“New York will be seeing what it knows as this classic play about the American Dream, but seen now through African-American eyes; you can see the glass ceiling; you can see why that dream, at that point, in that time is actually impossible; it is an impossible dream,” says Clarke. “It is what sends Willy down that wormhole of madness.” This production of Death of a Saleman tells the exact same story, but with a Black cast; the Lomans are an African-American family in a predominantly white capitalist world. “When we did the show in London, a lot of people asked, ‘Did you change the script? You must have changed the script,’ and we would say, ‘We have not changed anything,’” says Clarke. “For example, when Willy goes into Howard’s office, you now see an older Black man begging a young white man to keep his job. When the package is dropped on the floor, he is told not to pick it up because they have office boys to do that. When Howard drops his matches and Willy picks them up, he does all of the things that he tells his son not to do. When you see a black man doing that with a white man a younger white man and belittling himself, groveling, it is so visceral that you cannot escape what the script is telling you.” Clarke said the difference in the cast heightens, enriches and deepens the script in a way that makes you see Death of a Salesman in a completely different way. Is there pressure to bring such a well-known play to Broadway? “I am bringing this story to people in a way that they have never seen it,” says Clarke. “I am part of history; there is no greater feeling than to be making history in a way that brings this story to Americans that they have never seen before.”
Broadway is set to deliver a performance to America next season that is sure to get noticed. Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman opens on Oct. 9 at the Hudson Theatre and is poised to change the way you think about a story you think you know.

Rod Stewart (January 10, 1945 to present) “Unbelievable. Who the hell sings like that?”
Aretha Franklin (March 25, 1942 to August 16, 2018) “My God. Once again—it’s just when somebody opens their mouth and you know it’s something they’re born with and it’s some force that’s moving through them. That’s coming from somewhere else, it’s moving through you and it’s not yours. You’re channeling something and it’s when I feel the honesty in someone’s voice.”

Having started out in the mid’80s, the Goo Goo Dolls operated in the college radio world at a time when bands from that scene hopped in the van, played clubs around the country and regularly dropped into regional radio stations to promote their latest release. At the time, the trio was calling distinctly non-alt-rock label Metal Blade home at the time and barely scraping by. That all changed when the Goos blew up via the 1995 smash single “Name,” which was a Billboard Hot 100 Top 5 hit. It was a seismic career shift for the band which Rzeznick remembers having mixed feelings about at the time. “[We blew up when] KROQ out in Los Angeles started playing the song,” he recalled. “At the time, they were sort of the taste-makers for the rest of the country. They started spinning the song and then it just caught on. In a way, there was this strange guilt that came with it. I guess they call it impostor syndrome because we’d grown up in this very underground, do-it-yourself scene and we never expected to do anything more than open for Soul Asylum and for The Replacements. And then boom—this thing just happened and it was crazy. But our manager said to just keep our heads down and keep working. To be honest with you, I think we worked harder than any other band or our ilk at that time. We just kept going for it and going for it and going for it.” Currently on the road with a new batch of songs and plenty of hits to play, Rzeznick and company are happy to be out of the house playing to fans. He was also happy to share some of his favorite singers with Long Island Weekly

Lia Howard (Photos courtesy of the Massapequa School District) Massapequa’s Lia Howard, signing a letter of intent to play soccer for the University of Illinois, was named the Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year for New York.
Howard credits her success to the support of her parents, coaches and teammates, especially co-captains Mia Baldinger, Jess Lynskey and Gianna Savella. The team is led by head coach Bruce Stegner. But Howard is more than just a great soccer player. She volunteers at a local animal shelter and also donates her time working with a youth indoor soccer program.

“It is extremely important to me to give back and help people and animals in any way that I can,” she said. “It simply just made me feel good knowing that I was helping others. Whether it was donating food, blankets and toys to the animal shelter or volunteering my time to assist underprivileged children while they learn the game of soccer. It’s important to take a step back and look at the world and realize that there are many other people that didn’t have the correct resources to obtain the opportunities that I, so gratefully was able to obtain.” Her work at the animal shelter fulfilled a lifelong passion to help animals. “I loved animals my whole life,” Howard said. “So, I thought instead of my friends and family giving me a birthday gift, I would ask them for any food item that I could donate to the shelters. I thought it was a great way to open the eyes of others to maybe do the same and I loved the feeling of knowing that the animals were benefiting from my actions. I believe it’s always imperative to put your own personal life on pause for a minute and really find out how you can make a difference, even if it’s small.”
As a senior captain, Howard led the Massapequa Chiefs to the Nassau County, Long Island and New York State championship. On the pitch, she has earned All American honors, was selected All-State and was named CoNassau MVP. A midfielder and forward for the Chiefs, she has scored 32 goals for her career. Howard was 4 when she started playing with the Massapequa Soccer Club and quickly developed a love for the sport. She joined the soccer team in seventh grade at Berner Middle School and, after a two-year hiatus because of commitments with her travel program, rejoined the Chiefs as a sophomore. While a 10th-grader, the Massapequa High School team won the county and Long Island championships.
Athlete Of The Month: Lia Howard, Massapequa Soccer
Lia Howard is a member of a pretty select club. In the rich tradition of the Massapequa girls soccer program, Lia became just the fifth Massapequa player to be selected as the Gatorade New York State Player of the Year. “It feels unreal to receive this award; I’m so honored,” Howard said. “I love the competitiveness of soccer. I think it’s so fun, and it is one of the best feelings in the world to step on the field and know you’re surrounded by great people.” For that honor as well as her impressive senior season, Howard is the Athlete of the Month.

And Final Thoughts
After spending an afternoon wandering around Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, my friend and I got to the train station around 3 p.m. It was a beautiful station that had a piano that was available for anybody to play, which someone did practically the whole time we were waiting. Once we got on our last Amtrak ride, my friend and I were basking in nostalgia, reflecting on all of our train memories of playing UNO cards or struggling to sleep in a train car full of snoring strangers. It was then announced that there was an issue with the last train car and it would have to be fixed. We ended up not moving until about three hours later. After another sleepless night on the train, we stepped off the train into Flagstaff, AZ, and met with a man who was renting out his car through an app called Toro. We expected to get a plain-old sedan but the car ended up being an electric hatchback Mustang because the car we rented had to go into the shop. We all became nervous when he found out we were going to the Grand Canyon with it, but after giving us instructions on how to charge it and handing us the key, we went on our way, charging the car first. To put an extra 20 percent of charge on it took 30 minutes. But we were on our way, and got to the Grand Canyon around 4 p.m. I remember walking towards it, feeling tingles in my feet. I’m not afraid of heights, but whenever I approach something like that I always get an intrusive thought about jumping off. It was quite an amazing thing to see. We walked along the south rim, stopping almost every moment to just stare at it. Getting there late ended up working out for us because we got to be there for the sunset, which gave the canyon a red tint. My friend and I stayed there until the sun went down, just looking at it and listening to music. Since we had the car for the night, we decided to go star gazing too. We got a little closer to the entrance to the park, as we didn’t want to risk getting lost in the dark Arizona wilderness and laid down on a rock. We did this until we heard what we think might have been a coyote. So then we watched by our Mustang.Buteven there, where there was more lights from cars and businesses, the sky lit up like a Christmas tree. We even got to see a very faint Milky Way. The next morning, we left at around 11 a.m. to go to Sedona, which was an hour from us. Sedona was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, with red rock formations almost everywhere you turned. I was also intrigued by the town’s spirituality and fascination with vortexes that many believe to be all over Sedona.Inone of the parks my friend and I were exploring, we found one of the vortexes. I think I felt it, but my friend said she didn’t. We ended the day at the airport overlooking all of Sedona for the sunset. We sat there in awe, while also reflecting on the fact that this would be the last landmark we’d see that summer. But in some ways we were happy, as we were both getting homesick. But Sedona was not our last day. We had another full day in Flagstaff, and decided to relax and walk around the town even spending about an hour sitting in a dog park... dog watching.Wespent the following day traveling back home via flight. We were not looking forward to it, but our experience was not that bad. Now that I’m back home settling back into my life and routine, it feels like this trip was a whole different lifetime, a whole different chapter. I’ve learned so much about the country, it people and history beyond what they teach you in school. My positive experiences with people, which included some who went out of our way to help us along this journey, heavily outweighed the negative experiences. I’m glad I did this and I encourage anyone to go and do whatever adventure they’ve had on their mind.

Take this deal where declarer should make five diamonds even though it seems he is destined to lose two hearts and a club. How ever, South can eliminate one of his losers with careful play. West can sink the contract by leading a heart or a club initially, but he makes the more normal lead of the nine of spades in response to East’s spade bid. Since the nine is obviously West’s highest spade, declarer knows that East has the K-10. He immediately puts this knowledge to work by covering the nine with the jack. Failure to do so would cost declarer the contract.

South takes East’s king with the ace, leads a trump to dummy, returns a spade and finesses the eight. He then cashes the queen of spades, discarding dummy’s four of clubs, and ruffs his last spade in dummy. Declarer now plays the king of clubs, whereupon East finds him self in dire straits. After taking the king with the ace, East has no safe return. He can cash his ace of hearts to put an early end to the proceedings, or he can lead a black suit, allowing South to discard a heart from his hand as he ruffs in dummy. Either way, East’s goose is cooked. Declarer’s proper course of play is marked from the start — even though he cannot actually see the adverse hands. The opening bid tells South that East has the ace of clubs, and West’s nine-of-spades lead tells declarer that East has the K-10 of that suit. All South has to do is to put this information to good use.

As noted in an earlier edition of The Roslyn News, the Town of North Hempstead presents free upcycled craft programs for children in the area. Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and Councilmember Mariann Dalimonte will team up with Melanie Cassens—owner of Cassigns of Port Washington—to host a number of programs throughout the summer. Cassigns is a local business in town that aims to give back to the community by allowing children to express their creativity.
Great Neck Resident Authors Children’s Books
Cassigns began as a hand-painted sign business on Etsy, an online marketplace where people can buy and sell custom-made items. Eventually, Cassens sign business evolved into custom-made pieces of furniture and other crafts that she would make for clients on request.
Great Neck resident Robert Lipkowitz en joyed a long career in advertising, where his clients included Canon, American Express, Microsoft and Miura. He is also a commu nication and public speaking consultant. Writing under his professional name, Bob Lipp, he has authored several books on the subject, including Speaking Skills In A Digital World But his biggest success has come as an author. He writes both adult and children’s books, or as he puts it, books for “ages 1 to 100,” adding that they are all “completely different and cross multi-genres.” His children’s books concern the saga of “Mr. Lumpy.” The series includes up to 11 books. Here is a summary of his most recent publications.
Mr. Lumpy. Mr. Lumpy, Why So Grumpy Mr. Lumpy? (Children) Mr. Lumpy. Mr. Lumpy. Why So Grumpy, Mr. Lumpy? presents everyday issues that affect your child, with happy solutions in rhyme to make them feel better and before/ after kid-tested illustrations.
Upcycled Summer Crafts
“There’s a lot of screentime, there’s a lot of TV time, video games, [and] all that with our kids these days. And it’s just amazing… once you give a kid a fun craft to do, how focused they can be on it,” Cassens“Havingsaid.young kids myself,” she continued, “I’ve noticed that there are so many people who don’t do crafts with their kids.” Because so many children are not given crafts at home, Cassens is passionate about providing children with the opportunity to create crafts at herAnotherevents.inspiration for Cassens’ business was her father, who was very handy. Growing up in town, Cassens watched her father as he gave back to the Port Washington community, and decided that upon opening her business, she would do the same.

A year ago, however, Cassens began to host classes for children in town, and although she continues to make signs and other pieces, her main focus is now kid-friendly woodworking and crafting classes. These classes were inspired by the need that Cassens saw for children to have a creative outlet.
Step inside the head of Nussbaum for a journey that will take you from a difficult childhood to the emergence of one of the most exceptional people in the world. Expand your sense of imagination as you challenge conventional thinking about the powers of the mind. Navigate daydreams and delusions while being in spired by a hard-luck kid who is touched by an unknown force in the universe. The Book of Nussbaum will awaken doubts and desires and have you question your own sense of reasoning while introducing you to remarkable people whose personal stories will astound and inspire you. Throughout it all, you’ll meet a man who will surprise, stimulate and fascinate you with his story. The Girl Who Rescues Worms (Young Adult/Inspirational) Rebecca Lindman is a remarkable young woman who, at the age of 14, leaves her small Pennsylvania town to move to New York City with her parents. There, she is thrown into a world of new experiences that challenge, complicate and enrich her life as she navigates prep school, dates a billion aire’s son, starts a business, and prepares for an Ivy League education while dealing with the pain of her best friend and helping others find a better life. A story filled with magic and emotion that will uplift and inspire you.
“I have a business, but I also just really love this community,” said Cassens, “and things like the Town of North Hempstead crafts coming up and Be the Rainbow [pride festival] – both of those I volunteered for and just really feel like they’re great organizations.”Earlierthissummer, Cassens volunteered at Be the Rainbow’s Pride Walk. At the festival following the walk, Cassigns set up a booth where children could make rainbow bracelets with colorful pipe cleaners and beads. Materials and resources at the booth were donated by both Cassens herself as well as other members of the community in support of the event.
“When I heard about what [Be the Rainbow] was doing, I just felt very inspired…[the booth] was about supporting an organization that I felt was very special for our town,” Cassens explained. Later this summer, Cassens set up a booth at the National Night Out in Manhasset, another event she hopes to give back to her community. In addition to special events that Cassens takes part in, she also hosts classes throughout the year for children to participate in. Classes are free but children must register in advance by calling 311.

Meanwhile, LIPA and PSEG seem to be having communication issues of their own (or possibly not), based on a LIPA report and a meeting with PSEG in late July. On July 27, Mark Harrington reported for Newsday that LIPA’s half of the LIPA-PSEG public-private utility partnership is “raising the latest in a series of red flags” regarding PSEG’s comput er system for managing power outages; later that day, Harrington also reported that LIPA officials reiterated their concerns that week at a board meeting about testing PSEG’s com puter system for managing outages, given that testing of the system using test scripts hasn’t demonstrated full-capacity functional ity so far. PSEG responded that the company has “successfully performed and completed all testing [with] industry best-practices” as supervised by LIPA and NYS regulators.

Stormy Summer Weather Tests
Sixteenth Annual Latina Hat Luncheon Held
In the month of July, at least two patches of blustery weather gave residents and utility operators of Nassau and Suffolk counties a chance to test their storm-readiness (and, in some cases, to identify or make needed repairs following storm damage).
On July 27, Senator Anna M. Kaplan joined the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for the 16th Annual Latina Hat Luncheon at the Crescent Beach Club in Bayville. Each year, the Chamber honors women at the luncheon who are exceptional business leaders, community advocates, and inspirational role models. The event celebrates women in the workforce and recognizes their contributions to the Hispanic and minority communities they serve.
Senator Kaplan said “as the Chair of the New York State Senate Small Business Committee, I’m proud to work with organizations like the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that do so much to give back to our community and help our small businesses to grow and thrive. At a time when the needs of our small business community continue to mount due to the impact of the pandemic, the work of the LIHCC is more important than ever. This year’s luncheon honored so many trailblazing women deserving of our gratitude and admiration, and I was thrilled to recognize and congratulate them for their achievements.”Visitwww.lihcc.org for more information about the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. — Submitted by the Office of Senator Anna M. On July 14, heavy rain and wind swept through much of the New York metropolitan area, causing flooding in numerous parts of Nassau County and Suffolk County, including Syosset and Manhasset, and bringing large hailstones down across central and eastern Long Island. A week later, on July 21, another storm tore through the region, bringing brief flooding and high winds. On both occasions, several thousand Long Islanders experienced disruptions in power, often because of downed lines and seemingly saw their service restored the same day.

While the 2022 hurricane season hasn’t yet brought the likes of Tropical Storm Isaias or Super Storm Sandy, Long Island has certainly taken some licks so far, and the forecast from local leaders and utility managers suggests we should ramp up preparations for more tricky weather to come. On Aug. 1, a new law went into effect which aims to “improve storm response efforts by utilities and ensure that problems seen during the failed response to Tropical Storm Isaias in 2020 are not repeated in future emergency response situations,” according to TheIsland360.com. Last week, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the legislation proposed by state Senator Anna M. Kaplan (D-North Hills) and Assemblyman Nader J. Sayegh (D-Yonkers), known as S.932a/A.3258, amid increased public concern about response times and support for emergency utility workers. In a statement, Kaplan said, “I spoke to so many crews on the ground in the aftermath of the storm who were frustrated by what they saw as a total lack of coordination between other crews and other utilities who were needed on site in order to complete a repair and restore service. By planning ahead, we can ensure a better, more efficient response to the next big storm that hits our Island.”

The fund was set up by Jim and Mary Regan in honor of their son. Sgt. Regan was assigned to company C, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment when he was killed by an IED which targeted his vehicle in northern Iraq in February, 2007. Deeply affected by the terror attacks of 9/11, Regan re jected lucrative Wall Street job opportunities and law school scholarships to volunteer for military service and entered the Army in February 2004. Helms Bros., Inc. was founded in 1934 by brothers Frank and Charlie Helms. Originally a Studebaker-Packard dealership, Helms Bros. acquired the distribu tion rights for Mercedes-Benz in 1957, making us one of the first Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Queens. Years later, Helms Bros. expanded to include Bayside Volk swagen, offering the same great service and bringing the Volkswagen brand to the people of Queens. Not quite finished, on June 1st, 2016, Volvo Cars of Queens opened their doors, marking the return of the Volvo brand to Queens after a 15-year absence. The Helms Auto Group trio of dealerships, all conveniently located on Northern Boulevard in Bayside, has become synonymous with luxury, quality and exceptional service. In addition to our dealerships and service centers, the Helms Auto Group is passionate about Driving Change in The Community through our outreach programs, including Toys for Tots, the annual New York Cares Coat Drive, the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, Breast Cancer Awareness, and most recently, our Backpack-Giveback through the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Queens. The Helms Auto Group’s success is contributed to by our outstanding team, most of whom have spent their entire careers working in one of our showrooms or service facili ties. Of course, none of this would be possible without our exceptional customers, who continue to patronize the Helms Auto Group year after year. Please visit us at Helms Bros., the all-new Volvo Cars of Queens or Bayside Volkswagen for all your automotive needs, and welcome to the Helms Auto Group Family.
