“We started as a food pantry, but we realized there was more of a need in the community than just food,” said Donna Galgano, one of the founders of People Loving People. “In order to try to get to the root of the problem with the food insecurity, we always felt that it’s great to hand out food, but how do we help these families get a better life?”

woods,” Galgano said. “And those older kids help the younger kids with their homework, because unfortunately these kids don’t necessarily do well in school, we’ve heard from social workers, because of the language barrier with the parents, who don’t speak English. These kids can’t get the help they need. They can’t affordUnfortunatelyteachers.” without help, it is more likely for a child to barely get through school and not succeed in their classes, which can ultimately lead to not being able to attend college or other secondary education programs.

But People Loving People does even more than just meet physical and educational needs, it provides people with what they need and want in their own homes and personal lives, like scholarships to programs like the Boys & Girls Club of Oyster Bay-East Norwich.

And even beyond supplies, People Loving People provides assistance through the Homework Helpers Club after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

People Loving People also runs a free health clinic.“I’m a nurse practitioner by trade,” Galgano said. “The clinic is always open when someone reaches out. I can meet with someone privately and see what I can do for them. It’s kind of like a walk-in clinic but you don’t have to pay. We were able to vaccinate almost 154 people for Covid and give boosters, and now I’ll have the new boosters coming in a week.”

“That’s going to change things for them,” Galgano said. “It’s going to allow them better jobs, better communication with an immigration attorney. So many things are a barrier to just getting out of this cycle of poverty.”

We started as a food pantry, but we realized there was more of a need in the community than just food.

But little did the volunteers at People Loving People know, their project would become a lifeline to hundreds of people and families during the pandemic, a time where many had lost their jobs and suffered mental and physical illness. It was also a time that families adjusted to children studying at home and parents working from home.Tothis day, many rely on their food pantry, the People’s Pantry, which operates at 123 Audrey Ave. in Oyster Bay on Wednesdays 3 to 6 p.m. and Fridays 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Among the goals of the pantry is to provide a shopping experience for those that use it, as the clients enjoy seeing and touching the produce before taking it home. The pantry offers fresh meat, dairy, produce, personal care items and other personal care items.

What’s important to People Loving People is treating these families and people who have come to them for help with dignity and respect.

The not-for-profit held a back to school supply drive through Aug. 26 to provide children with what they need for an educational school year.

But People Loving People goes beyond meeting nutritional needs, especially as the children begin returning to school.

Serving residents in Oyster Bay and surrounding communities, People Loving People can certainly use the community’s help. Dropping off food and offering to volunteer are great ways to serve those who rely on People Loving People.

“I did not want to be a food pantry where people line up, we give them a bag and they leave,” Galgano said. “It’s treating them withAnddignity.”Galgano hopes that People Loving People can be a not-for-profit that doesn’t just put a band-aid over the issue, but one that can help break the cycle of poverty for many families.

“They have a snack, they do the homework, they meet with the homework helpers and then they play a game if there’s still time,” Galgano said. “All great. All free for

eople Loving People began in November 2019 as a project that would provide for senior citizens at a local community center.

On Sept. 1, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced an increased percentage of Nassau County residents relying on food banks.

said. “I have an ongoing list of people who need an air conditioner, people that need a job, people that need a dresser, a stove, a fridge, a T.V. I just work little by little on this list. I go on Facebook Marketplace and buy stuff that seems reasonable... I just bought a broiler for someone who doesn’t have a stove and they have three kids.”

“The peer mentors are a great role model and example for smart kids who are good kids, and these little kids bonded so well with these kids,” Galgano said. “Plus these kids’ grades were just tremendous. We give them a little bit of an incentive with prizes, rewards and honors that they would not normally get in school for their best average. It’s really just them competing with themselves, not others.”Twoteacher aides run the classroom and one of them is fluent in Spanish.

“We’re able to have the kids come with peer mentors, who are kids in the highschool from not just Oyster Bay; but Locust Valley, Friends Academy, Portledge, East-

People Loving People has seen the trend itself.“We used to be serving on Wednesdays maybe 80, or sometimes 60,” Galgano said. “We are serving 105 families on Wednesday and another 50 on Friday. Aside from the pandemic, this is the most we’ve served, which makes it hard because we have to buy food we don’t get. We have to buy eggs and milk. Eggs are so expensive. We buy it every week and make sure we have it and we take whatever we can get from the food banks and a lot of local donations.”

“We just came out of two years of dark ness all throughout the world with the coronavirus pandemic,” said Blakeman. “A time when many people lost their job, many people were confined to their homes, many people had no way to feed themselves. You have organizations like Long Island Cares that really stepped up to the plate. They entered into partnerships with the private sector and the public sector and literally fed millions of people here on Long Island.”

People Loving People Meets Needs Beyond Food

“We were able to supply every child who registered through the pantry, I think it was 94 children with backpacks and school supplies,” said Galgano. “So that helps alleviate the burden for the families.”

I’ve learned that young people have a voice and their actions can create significant impact and even movements.spread

Visit www.girlpride.org to learn more about Sabrina Guo and her work.

Guo: On a family vacation trip to China to visit family, I came across what was called a welfare institute. It’s really both a refuge and school for orphans and abandoned children, and I saw that many of the staff members—teachers, social workers—were foreigners. They weren’t Chinese. They were Americans or British people from the UK or Europeans. And, so they were adults taking care of children and I was 9-years-

Record Pilot: You were very involved in assisting health care workers with getting PPE during the pandemic, as well as supporting health care workers with work of art done by you and your friends. What have you learned from that experience? Would you say it inspired you to do even more?

Guo: It’s a lot of prioritizing and time management and really knowing how to delegate responsibilities to fellow key mem bers at Girl Pride International and LILAC, and my parents who I have essentially made my secretaries. Thankfully I’ve seen a lot of support, not just from members and leaders from these two organizations, but also from school administrators and teachers and elected officials and community leaders who have provided resources and guidance and really help us to be the best version of ourselves.

Record Pilot: What inspired you to get involved with activism and volunteerism?

Guo: There are many things that inspire me. One of them would be Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative. She helped over 60 million girls all over the world. And I always remember this quote that she said which is; ‘Every girl, no matter where she lives, deserves the opportunity to develop the promise inside of her.’ And that’s something I hold very closely to my heart through all the work that I do...

old at the time. I was really curious. I had conversations with them. I asked questions like ‘Why were the children in this situation? And what guided you to help them?’

But her activism did not start there. Among her many projects and initiatives, in 2018, Guo founded Girl Pride International, a nonprofit that focuses on supporting displaced, refugee, and migrant girls’ with intellectual material and meeting social needs and connecting with other grassroots organizations in Long Island, New Orleans, Kenya, Jordan and Central America.

Young people not only have a voice but no matter how small their action is, they can make a difference. I started [LILAC] with just my family and close friends, and then we expanded to over 150 members and over 100 organizations and community

o endeavor is too big for Sabrina Guo of Oyster Bay Cove.

Entering into her senior year at Syosset High School, Guo has already made positive changes in the community and beyond.Atthe height of the pandemic in March 2020, Guo, 14-years-old at the time, founded a student run organization called Long Island Laboring Against COVID-19 (LILAC) that received recognition from President Joseph Biden through the Presidential Gold Volunteer Service Award.

overseen by our chief technology officer. And she is a graduate school student at NYU. We also have an advisory board that’s made up of a dozen college med school and graduate school students from different fields and different expertise. We also have adults that sit on our board of directors that include CEOs and founders of other social enterprises.

Record Pilot: I’m sure you won’t stop here. What are your future goals?

—Sabrina Guo

Guo: Girl Pride International has different committees and project groups that all serve a different function. We have a fundraising committee, creative works committee. We also have a crossing borders pen pal program that’s primarily run by me because it’s four-years-old. It was our very first initiative that connected U.S. students to Syrian refugee artists. We also have the social media and tech committee that’s

Record Pilot: How do you balance the responsibility of being a student and an activist?

The organization provided healthcare workers with Personal Protective Equipment, which was hard to find at the time, meals and funds. LILAC also supported healthcare workers by inspiring them with art created by students and it combated all forms of hate and discrimination such as the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes and violence due to COVID-19.

Q&A With Oyster Bay Cove Activist Sabrina Guo

Record Pilot: What was the first act of kindness that you did for the community?

Guo: We will continue to fight against gun violence. I co-organized a March for Our Lives rally in Long Island earli er this summer in front of the Supreme Court and Legislature where more than 500 people showed up, including a lot of speakers and elected officials. An other item is in light of overturning Roe V. Wade, women reproductive health has been severely attacked. And so I am engaging with lawmakers to protect re productive rights at the federal and local level by writing letters and other forms of advocacy. However, I want to share that I am conducting research to the extent of what social and economic factors, such as race, religion, education and more affect emergency contraceptive access. That’s my current research project and I plan to share my findings with the public and especially with lawmakers and policy makers... Another is to continue com bating all forms of hate and prejudice, particularly against the anti-Asian hate crimes... And also to advocate for gender equality and equal pay and for the U.S. to take on the leadership to fight climate change. I proposed and helped to draft a county resolution to memorialize Marie Colvin’s legacy by naming a local street in her name. She was a war correspon dent [who grew up in East Norwich]. She died in the front lines in Syria... I’m also working with the County Legislature to commission a Nassau County Youth Poet Laureate program... Another piece of news is I am going to debut a poetry book called Catalog Of Ripenin g that’s going to be published around Sept. 9.

Record Pilot: You’ve been helping underprivileged girls all around the world. What is the logistics of your organization, Girl Pride International?

CORRJENNIFERjcorr@antonmediagroup.com

The Glen Cove Oyster Bay Record Pilot connected with Guo to discuss her current activism and how she balances the responsibilities of a high school student with her many projects and goals.

After talking to them, I met with the administrator there and expressed my intention to come back with toys and candy and other snacks, foods, story books and games and educational supplies for the kids. So I came back. The first donation was with family and friends and relatives. It went so well and we did not have enough for everyone. So, I went back there again and I asked my parents at the time if we could get more people involved, like local businesses. So the second time was with more community members and businesses.

leaders partnered with us. I think once you take that first step it’s only a matter of time before others join you in the movement. And that’s the power of our generation and the youth who are living in such a polarized time. Through that, we’ve gotten involved in so many more movements. For example, empowering girls in Kenya and working closely with our Girl Pride International Samburu chapter [Samburu is a region in Kenya]. We’re helping the children there have more access to education and providing resources. We’re actually nearing the completion of building a brand new solar paneled, WiFi-enabled classroom that will accommodate 80 students that are currently in first or second grade and have never had their own classroom.

ouncilwoman Vicki Walsh seeks volunteers to help plant and maintain the Town of Oyster Bay’s Rain Gardens, which are a critical element of the town’s pollution prevention strategy. During the Rain Garden Work Party on Sunday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay, volunteers are needed to assist with weeding, raking, pruning, mulching, and transplanting existing rain gardens, while learning about the environmental benefits these structures offer.

“A rain garden is a collection of native plants placed in a small depression to temporarily hold rain water runoff from roofs, driveways, patios, or lawns. They have numerous environmental benefits, such as filtering pollutants, reducing flooding, and providing food and habitats to wildlife,” Walsh said.

The event will be held in partnership with Friends of the Bay and The Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District, as these groups collaborated with the Town of Oyster Bay to design and construct the gardens. All volunteers must bring gloves, and community service hours will be offered to participants.“Fromhelping to capture runoff so it does not pollute our waterways to preventing the breeding of mosquitoes, rain gardens have a tremendously positive impact on our environment and water quality. We hope to see you on Sept. 18 at the Western Waterfront to help maintain these gardens,” Walsh concluded.

doing so, she lost her leadership position within the GOP House Caucus. Where was martyrdom getting Liz Cheney? A postscript: McConnell clearly hopes that the Democrats control the Senate this November, lest Trump receive credit for a GOP comeback. Vladimir Putin (Source commons.wikimedia.org)

Russia. An aide came up with “sovereign democracy.” Russia would be democratic on its terms, not others. Putin may or may not have been a believer, but he came to define Russia as a Christian Orthodox nation. Short, meanwhile, sums up the dilemma in two pithy sentences: “America, the dominant global power, believes that its role is to lead. Russia refuses to be lead.” Is Putin that dangerous? Ask the Ukranians. However, he isn’t the most powerful man in the world. That title now belongs to Xi Jinping, premier of the People’s Republic of China. And herein is the story that will decide Putin’s legacy. With the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Putin made the fateful decision to pivot East. Goodbye to the West (if that’s what they want), hello to China and India as consumers of Russia’s energy reserves. The global economy has changed significantly during Putin’s reign. By 2000, 70 percent of the world’s GNP was in the hands of the G-7 nations. By 2020, that number had dropped to 43 percent, with China driving the wheel. Putin will gladly keep delivering energy to wealthy nations in Western Europe. Still, he believes Russia’s destiny is with the Orient.

The authors are correct about a nation that has seen nothing but strife in the new century: The 2000 election, the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the failure of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden to unite the country, the June 2020 riots and finally, Donald Trump’s out-of-the-blue presidency.Jan.6,2021, just as Sept. 11, 2001, changed nothing. How could it? The nation’s divisions are more severe than the authors may realize. The recent abortion decision highlights those divides as does the demographic revolution, the assaults on American history (108 monuments and statues were torn down or burnt down during the June 2020 riots), the definition of marriage, the voting patterns of urban America and its rural counties, and battles over the mere classroom teaching of American history. This book is partisan; however, the authors deliver no false optimism.PhilipShort’s comprehensive biography of Vladimir Putin ends with a seemingly contradictory note. Putin, the book jacket tells us, is the “world’s most dangerous man.” On the final page, Short predicts that once the Russo-Ukraine War ends, hostile relations between Russia and the West, even between that country and Ukraine willPutinsubside.follows a by-now familiar story: The young man’s fascination with espionage, a generally uneventful career as a KGB agent, a vice mayor of St. Petersburg under his friend Anatoly Sobchak, the transfer to Moscow, work in Boris Yeltsin’s faltering administration, and finally, the surprise appointment as Russia’s president once Yeltsin retired.

No one gave Putin a chance for political survival when he became president in 2000. The man was determined to end the civil war in Chechnya, which he did in ruthless fashion. Thanks to rising oil prices the Russian economy rebounded. Putin cut the top tax rate to 18 percent and gave tax credits to young couples having more than one child. In time, Putin felt his oats. His 2007 speech at the Munich security conference lambasted America’s bid for a unipolar world. A 2013 speech criticizing gay rights earned him many admirers in Europe and America. The 2014 invasion of Crimea was viewed by those same conservatives as an example of decisive action. For a time, Putin was hailed as the most powerful man on the planet. Through it all, Putin was searching for an identity to fit post-communist

Of course as a pastor I want to make the case that “keeping holy the Lord’s Day” is good for all of us. For those of us who recognize Sunday as the Lord’s Day it is time to get beyond our past COVID excuses and just come back to pray together again. Many churches were able to stream their Masses and services during the time of pandemic and some of the faithful got used to watching from afar. But that is like Facetiming the family on Thanksgiving Day instead of going over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house. “Being there” is one of the best forms of self-care possible.

Driving around suburbia these days it is clear to see who is water ing their lawns and who is leaving it up to Mother Nature. “Mother,” it seems, has been neglecting this duty as a prolonged drought has kept the neighborhood bereft of needed rain.

Father Ralph Sommer is the pastor of St. Bernard’s Church in Levittown and is an Anton Media Group columnist.

Nature’s behavior is actually a pretty good metaphor for summer. We stop doing what we usually do and enter into the dormancy called “vacation,” but now that September has crept up on us, it’s time to get back to a time of growth, as will the lawns, once the rains come and the cool weather approaches.Thistimeof year calls for a little more self-care, just as the lawn that emerges from dormancy will need mowing again—and perhaps a bit of fertilizer to prepare it for winter. It might be easy to forget this self-care because we now have the back to school activities and regular work demands. We need to close the pools and bring the houseplants in. So much to do. And while we might notice the effect of an un-mowed lawn after a few weeks, we might not notice the detrimental effect all this busyness has on us.

now know is the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI started out as an agency dedicated to wipe out domestic crime. As observers of the America scene, many of us will remember such names as Al Capone, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and the notorious Bonnie and Clyde. The browning of our lawns does not mean the grass is dying. Rather it is a rather resourceful mecha nism of self-preservation for these plants called “going dormant”—a process that keeps the lawns alive for around six weeks. At that point they’ll definitely need a drink or the blades will take on a grayish hue that indicates imminent death.

“Throughout her career, Ms. Longo has af fected growth and change leading to student achievement, sustainability and progress,” BOCES Board member Robert “B.A.” Schoen said at the awards gala. “We salute her for the incredible efforts she’s made on behalf of students with special needs.”

Esteemed former administrator Barbara Longo was recently honored at the awards gala held by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation. The foundation is an inde pendent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

Local schools soon recognized Longo’s abilities as an educational leader, and she was enlisted to serve as an administrator for two different districts. Throughout her tenure as an educator, she has fostered a learning environment that is stimulating, motivating, supportive and inclusive of the entire learning community.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides in accomplishing key edu cational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.

Retired Nassau BOCES Administrator Honored

Inevitably, Longo returned to Nassau BOCES, this time as supervisor of the Special Education Department, eventually moving into the role of assistant director. Under her guidance and leadership, a number of innovative programs were developed to meet the diverse needs students throughout Nassau County. Her work ethic, as well as her motivational and support skills, have made her a touchstone in navigating some of the biggest challenges to face Long Island schools.Visitwww.nassauboces.org. by Nassau BOCES

arbara Longo, former assistant director of Nassau BOCES Special Education Department, was lauded as one of the most devoted supporters of public education on Long Island. Longo is among 15 honorees to receive the 2022 Nassau BOCES Education Partner award, bestowed annually on those individuals and organizations whose impact on public edu cation in Nassau County can be measured in tangible ways.

Longo went on to Adelphi University to earn her degree in education and began teaching in Western Suffolk schools. From there, she returned to RKS to teach full time. She soon took on the role of coordinator of the school’s summer program. From there, she went on to become assistant principal at Nassau BOCES Ames and Fern Place Elementary Schools (a split position), those schools eventually moved and merged to become the Jerusalem Avenue Elementary School. After that, she was appointed assistant principal for RKS and the Center for Community Adjustment.

As the autumn season approaches, it’s an excellent time for homeowners to examine their gardens and prepare them for the cooler temperatures to come. Although you may think of gardening only during the summer months, caring for your garden during the fall can help it survive the winter season and produce a healthy crop next year. Whether you’re growing a vegetable garden, flower bed or even trees and shrubs, these fall garden maintenance tips will ensure your entire landscape is ready for temperatures to drop.

Although the gardening season may be coming to a close, your perennial plants will continue growing until they go dormant in late fall. To prepare them for the colder temperatures, be sure to remove all weeds and any parts of the plant infested with disease or pests. If you’re planning on adding more plants to your garden, consider planting spring-blooming bulbs this fall while the soil is still warm.

7. APPLY FALL FERTILIZER

While the summer growing season may be over, there are still many plants you can grow over the winter. The most common frost-tolerant crops for fall planting include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, parsnips, garlic, cabbage, collards and spinach. Many of these crops not only grow well during the fall, but they taste better after a light frost. Be sure to cover your plants as soon as any frost is forecasted to ensure your garden survives the winter.

as well as plants that are infested with disease. Tilling your garden is an excellent way to expose any dried plants or weeds. It will also reveal any pests hiding in your garden, including fall armyworms, which are most active during the fall.

A cover crop may be spread over your garden to prevent erosion and weed growth. It may consist of mustard, clover, peas or even a combination of cover crops. Once spring arrives, the cover crop may be turned over to add nutrients to the soil.

5. PLANT FALL CROPS

3. CARE FOR TREES AND SHRUBS

Don’t forget to continue watering your perennials at least once a week until the ground freezes. Once the ground does freeze, cover the crown of your newly planted perennials with a four- to 5-inch layer of bark mulch. This mulch may also be used to cover perennials that are sensitive to frost.

6. APPLY FALL PRE-EMERGENTS

4B | DESIGN & DÉCOR • SEPTEMBER 14 - 20, 2022

Visit www.sodsolutions.com for more lawn care products and advice.

2. PREPARE YOUR PERENNIAL GARDEN FOR WINTER

4. PLANT A COVER CROP

If you’re looking to establish more trees and shrubs on your lawn, fall is the best time to plant while the ground is still workable. Generally, the ideal time to plant new trees is six weeks before the first sign of hard frost. Planting anytime between September through November will allow your new trees to establish their roots before winter sets in.

For those who have trees and shrubs, autumn is the perfect season to check on your shrubbery and prepare them for winter. One way to care for your trees this fall is to cover the soil around them with mulch. Adding a fresh layer of mulch around the base of your tree will protect the roots from harsh winter conditions. Avoid covering the trunk with mulch, however, as this could cause rot and other diseases. In addition to mulching, fall is also an ideal time to prune your shrubs once dormancy has started.

Similar to fall lawn care, many gardens and trees can benefit from fertilizer before winter sets in. Fall fertilizer is best applied in late fall before the first frost, as it will help plants endure the approaching cold temperatures. Following these simple fall garden maintenance tips will help your plants survive the cold temperatures of winter. Whether you plan on growing a cool season crop, or you simply want to protect your garden, this fall garden checklist will ensure a healthy, thriving garden next spring.

As you remove plant debris from your garden, now is also an excellent time for removing gardening supplies. Items such as stakes, cages and labels should be gathered and put away to be used again next spring.

Pre-emergent weed killers are used for controlling weeds before they appear above the ground. To promote a weed-free garden next year, consider applying fall pre-emergents to your garden once all plant debris is removed.

The Art Of Living With Houseplants

Houseplants are often an afterthought when it comes to decorating a home. We think about where we will entertain, dine, and sleep but often overlook the important role houseplants play in design. They are architecturally interesting and can completely transform the look and feel of a space. Whether you want an indoor jungle overflowing with plants or a few well-placed options to soften a room, there are many houseplants available to fit your needs and complement your home.

A new mailbox gives the home a fresh appearance.

A small investment in a new front porch light can work wonders, but you’ll also want to pay attention to the condition of any other light fixtures in front, like those that may be on either side of the garage, or the street light in your front yard. Yes, potential buyers will probably make their first visit during the day, but attractive light fixtures can really add to the appeal of a home even if the lights aren’t on.

CLEAN EVERYTHING

How to supercharge the first impression buyers have of your home

LANDSCAPINGSTRATEGIC

CHECK LIGHT FIXTURES

This involves not only cutting the grass, but also clearing out any dead limbs, plants, and other unwanted foliage that might be hanging around. In addition, get rid of any tree branches or bushes that may make your yard look crowded and dark, and trim all hedges so that they look neat. Finally, plant some colorful flowers—best to do it a couple of weeks before the house goes on the market, so they’ve had the chance to grow in a bit and don’t look too contrived.

—Realtor.com

Washing the windows is a given, but before you do that, think about giving your house a good power wash to remove the dirt, grime, and moss that may have accumulated over the years. This could save you the expense of repainting your entire home.

had a sales price advantage ranging from 5.5 to 12.7 percent. That could mean an extra $16,500 to $38,100 in value on a $300,000 home.

What Is Curb Appeal?

urb appeal is both an art and a science. And since it’s a buyer’s first impression of your home, it can be essential in selling your home.

Once your house is shiny and clean, you may find that the entire house doesn’t need repainting—just the trim and the front door. While you’re at it, consider brightening the facade with a touch of contrasting color. You’ll be surprised by how a little pop of color can really freshen up the place.

It’s one area where every bit of work you do can pay off. For real. Renovation expert Bob Vila estimates that this first impression could add 20 percent to your home’s value (a figure that rivals, or sometimes surpasses, the return on a new kitchen or bath).

C

fact, it could look like it was used to house a pipe bomb, and you’ve just stopped paying attention. If it’s affixed to your house, you’ve probably forgotten about it, aesthetically speaking. Paint it, polish it, or replace it. You’ll be glad you did.

What is curb appeal? This all-important practice will improve how your home looks to buyers right as they pull up and park—or even as they drive by (slowly, one hopes). That includes your front yard, driveway, and your home’s exterior, from its paint job to the potted plants on your patio to even the welcome mat that greets people as they pass through your front door.

If your mailbox is on the street, there’s a good chance it’s been a bit beaten up. In

Adding curb appeal doesn’t have to cost an outrageous amount of money. You’d be surprised by how inexpensive “prettifying” your home’s front exterior can be, if you’re willing to do a little work yourself. Or maybe a lot of work. (Hey, you want to sell the place, right?)

TAME FOLIAGE

And when the lights are on? You may have just nailed the curb appeal deal.

Well-landscaped homes have a sales price advantage.

One of the most important aspects of curb appeal is getting the grounds to look as good as they possibly can. Alex X. Niemiera, a horticulturist at Virginia Tech, found that well-landscaped homes

needles, leaves, spare pickleballs, or other detritus that might have accumulated there. Buyers are justifiably picky about the condition of the roof, especially when it comes to pickleballs.

If some of the shingles have come loose or there’s visible damage to your roof, you absolutely must fix that. Hire a roof specialist to see just how much work is needed, then get it done. If your roof is relatively new and in good shape, at least clean off any pine

You will score only eight tricks in this case. If you attempt to estab lish one more by giving up a dia mond, South wins with the jack and returns a low heart, whereupon the defense collects four heart tricks to put you down one.

2. Win the club with ace, cross to the ace of diamonds and lead a low diamond. If South follows low, finesse the nine. This assures nine tricks and the contract even if the nine loses to the jack. With North on lead, there is no combination of the cards that would allow the defenders to cash four heart tricks at this point. The worst that can happen is that you lose three heart tricks and a diamond.

The Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the town board observed the annual Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach.Thetown’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero.

When potential adopters come to the shelter, they generally have an idea of what type of pet they are looking for and what the best fit is for their family and lifestyle, but the Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter staff, Sala dino said, can help adopters ensure they find the right pet for their lifestyle and family.

—Information provided by the Town of Oyster Bay

9. Because The Shelter Pet Project makes it easy. You can go to the Shelter Pet Project at theshelterpetproject.org to find pets near you, of every size, color, temperament and breed. Purebred and mixed breed animals alike are waiting for their forever homes.

“In addition to free adoption month, the town will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccina tion Clinic at the Animal Shelter on Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No reservations are necessary,” said Councilman Steve Labriola. Microchip services will also be available for a $25 fee.

If you buy a dog from a pet store, online seller or flea market, you’re almost certainly getting a dog from a puppy mill. Puppy mills are factory-style breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs. Animals from puppy mills are housed in shockingly poor conditions with improper medical care and are often very sick and behaviorally troubled as a result. The moms of these puppies are kept in cages to be bred

1. Because you’ll save a life. Each year, it’s estimated that more than one million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet. The number of euthanized animals could be reduced dramatically if more people adopt pets instead of buying them. When you adopt dogs and cats, you save a loving animal by making them part of your family and open up shelter space for another animal who might desperately need it.

Overburdened shelters take in millions of stray, abused and lost animals every year, and by adopting an animal, you’re making room for others. Not only are you giving more animals a second chance, but the cost of your adoption goes directly towards helping those shelters better care for the animals they take in.

over and over for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever joining a family. And after they’re no longer profitable, breeding dogs are simply dis carded—either killed, abandoned or sold at auction. By adopting a pet, you can be certain you aren’t giving them a dime.

ested in on the animal shelter’s website or Facebook page can contact the shelter, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 516-677-5784 to speak to a shelter representative. Potential adopters who are interested in a dog who already have a dog at home will be asked to arrange a “meet and greet” prior to adoption.

Free Animal Adoptions Throughout September At Town Animal Shelter

2. Because you’ll get a great animal. Animal shelters and rescue groups are brimming with happy, healthy pets just waiting for someone to take them home. Most shelter pets wound up there because of a human problem like a move or a divorce, not because the animals did anything wrong. Many are already housetrained and used to living with families.

spay/neuter, first vaccinations (and sometimes even microchipping) is included in the adoption price, which can save you some of the upfront costs of adding a new member to your family. Depending on the animal, you may also save on housebreaking and training expenses.

he Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees throughout the month of September.

7. Because all pets are good for your health, but adoptees offer an extra boost.

Top Reasons To Adopt A Pet

5. Because it’s one way to fight puppy mills.

“If a pet is ever lost, they can be taken to a vet clinic or animal shelter where they will be scanned for a microchip ID and returned to their rightful owner,” Labriola said.

During the month of September, the shel ter will waive the general adoption fees of $80 per dog and $84 per cat. All usual adoption services will be provided, including the spay ing or neutering of the animal, vaccination and microchipping. Residents interested in viewing the animals available for adoption can call the shelter to make an appointment, or visit “Adoptingwww.oysterbaytown.com.yournewbestfriend from an animal shelter or rescue organization has so many benefits,” Saladino said. “Adopting a pet comes with a lower cost, full health evaluation and of course, the best gift of knowing that you are giving that animal a new chance at a wonderful life.”

During this month, people are also encouraged to adopt senior pets.

Saladino added that while the shelter staff consistently helps the pets in the shelter find appropriate homes throughout the year, offering free adoptions does tend to bring an increase in interest from residents

3. Because it’ll cost you less. Usually when you adopt pets, the cost of

“I invite and encourage residents looking for a new pet, to check in with the town’s An imal Shelter during the month of September, as general adoption fees will be waived,” said Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “Our shelter staff has a wonderful reputation for provid ing great care to the pets housed there, and has a long history of uniting those looking for a fur-ever companion.”

6. Because your home will thank you. Many of the pets from shelters and rescues are already house-trained, which means you’re not only saving a pet’s life, you may be saving your rug. Adopting a mature pet not only gives older animals a second chance, it often means introducing them to your family will be much easier.

10. Because you’ll change a homeless animal’s whole world. And get a new best friend out of the deal. Seriously, what could be better than that?

T

8. Because adoption helps more than just one animal.

“Sometimes people are wary of bringing home an older pet, but senior animals are often easier to care for, especially for senior residents,” Saladino said.

To hit water quality goals, the North Shore of Nassau County will need to upgrade more than 20,000 existing septic systems with clean water technology. Clean water septic systems convert nitrogen in wastewater into a harmless gas by harnessing natural processes.

For decades, the North Shore has been afflicted by harmful algal blooms, dense invasive seaweed, fish kills and beach closures as a result of excess nitrogen from untreated wastewater in septic tanks and cesspools. In addition to reducing nitrogen in our bays, beaches, and harbors, it is critical that we treat septic wastewater be fore it contaminates our drinking water. Nassau County sits directly above a major Special Groundwater Protection Area (SGPA) where freshwater replenishes into a deep recharge aquifer. Any untreated wastewater that flows into the aquifer will eventually make its way into our drinking water.

NOSH is a Free Food Distribution Service open at 32 School Street, Glen Cove on Mondays. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

his summer Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the availability of $30 million in funding to replace outdated cesspools and septic tanks across New York State. Of this $30 million, Nassau County is set to receive $2 million to boost its current septic replacement grant initiative, Nassau Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness (S.E.P.T.I.C.). This funding will double the amount Nassau S.E.P.T.I.C. has to $4 million.

These systems are so effective they can remove up to 95 percent of nitrogen from wastewater when compared to conventional septic tanks. Removing excess nitrogen from the environment will help restore our commercial fishing, boating, and recreation industry and improve drinking water for generations to come.
