Preservationistsacres. urged the village to find a way to save the residence, which lacked landmark status but which they argued was of historic value. Then-Village Clerk Randi Malman formed a committee to study the issue and recommended that the village buy the house (for a symbolic $1) and move it down the street to the empty lot and create a new seat of government.

The village produced documents indicating that the Circle Drive lot was bought in the 1940s for the purpose of putting a village hall there, but this never came to fruition.

Developer William Lindenmeier brought the Richardson House in September 2021 for $1.3 million (per county property records) and made his intention known to demolish the house, which records list as 2,680 square feet, sitting on a lot covering approximately .48

Anna Pace lives next to the empty lot, and spoke often at the at-times contentious village board meetings where the fate of the Richardson House dominated the discussion.Shealsoexpressed sadness about the loss of the house, stating, “We never said to destroy the house. Trust me, I was in that house. I knew [owner] Ann Bilms and we knew her children. My daughter was friends with [her daughter].”

Pace went on to note that residents were not opposed to moving the original part of the house, which she said was about 800 square feet and would not have had such a large footprint on the empty lot, and not changed the topography. They also felt that the planned basement was not necessary, as modern record-keeping was digitized. Village officials cited the lack of expansion space for files at the current location.

She added, “The house was on the market for two years—nobody wanted to buy it because it was in such bad disrepair. We got the report from the engineer hired by the couple [who was looking to buy the house]. And it was very different than what our village board was saying. And that’s when [the couple] pulled back from the deal.”

Circle Drive residents for the loss of the house.“They want to crucify us because we won the referendum. They’re trying to pin this whole thing on the residents of Circle Drive, which I find quite unfair,” she charged. “The house is gone now. It’s spilled milk. The blame falls among many people.”

Watching the bulldozer tear down this pristine 300-year-old home was a sad day for our staff, the trustees and myself.

Richardson House demolition closes a controversial chapter in village

Village leaders argued that the move was necessary. Plandome Manor was only one of two municipalities in the state whose village hall was outside its boundaries— neighboring Plandome Heights was the other—and needed an annual waiver from the state. They affirmed that the current location at 55 Manhasset Ave. in Manhasset was inadequate for the staff and the files.

Sad Day

Pace pushed back against a group that drafted a letter (see page 12) that blamed

The execution date was Aug. 4, when heavy equipment demolished the Richardson House, whose origins date back to 1730. According to an article in the July 29, 1923 Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Plandome resident George Richardson had it disassembled and moved from Hanover Corners, Massachusetts, to the village via barge and had it reassembled at its current site.

Meriggi lamented the bad feelings

Under the proposed defeated plan, the village would have moved the historic residence from 149 Circle Dr. about 1,000 feet to what would have been 41 Circle Dr. and transform it into a new village hall. The empty property is approximately 149x105 feet in size. It has a pathway to the Plandome Manor LIRR station and is considered a “green space” used as a park for decades by neighborhood residents, especially children.

the infrastructure—a septic system and dry wells—being put into place. The plans were approved by the village, he noted, adding, “The design of the house has been approved by the Design Review Board and we are awaiting final construction plans to commence on the construction of the rest of theSarahhouse.”Meriggi of Circle Drive belonged to Residents to Preserve the Green, created to push back against village plans. In an email, she wrote: “I was present at the demolition, alongside a handful of residents and left after the first ‘hit.’ It was not a happy stance; my feelings were very sad to see memorable memories end this way after 30 years. The former owners were our friends, and both our daughters’ childhood was played out in this home. Today they remain best friends.”

he death sentence for the oldest residence in Plandome Manor was signed on April 5 of this year. That’s when village residents voted 119-87 against a referendum to float a $600,000 bond to erect a new government center on a vil lage-owned lot.

Meriggi said that Circle Drive residents were unfairly maligned and their concerns overlooked.“Therewas ample opportunity for the house to be relocated or given away for free. But not one person, preservationist or society wanted it despite herculean efforts of the former family, community and, later on, the board, when they tried,” Meriggi asserted. “The cost is prohibitive. The house had previously been gutted by the owners, and any remaining authentic features of the small portion of the home from the 1700s had been removed and repurposed.”

—Plandome Manor Mayor Barbara Donno

see RICHARDSON HOUSE on page 14

Asked for her reaction to the demolition, Donno said in a statement, “Watching the bulldozer tear down this pristine 300-yearold home was a sad day for our staff, the trustees and myself. The Richardson House was a part of Plandome Manor’s remarkable history. Repurposing this beautiful piece of history into a village hall would not only have become the home of our 9/11 Memorial, but a village hall that would have been used for the benefit of all Plandome Manor residents. It was a missed opportunity for all who live in Plandome Manor.”Building Inspector Ed Butt told the Manhasset Press, “It’s a sad day in history. It’s sad that we don’t respect our past nearly as much as we should. It’s just a shame. That’s my take on the loss of the Richardson House.”Buttsaid the replacement residence is already taking shape at 149 Circle Dr., with

The rent was bound to rise, and according to Mayor Barbara Donno, efforts by real estate professionals to find affordable office space that would also fulfill the village’s needs, including a court, were unsuccessful.

“I have listened intently over the last two hearing periods for I don’t know how many hours, and I’ve been impressed by the sincerity of all the speakers that have come, and I actually consider it to be a real honor to be sitting in my position now,” Councilman Robert Troiano said, “And see how the American system of government works, that we can come together peacefully and have people express their thoughts on both sides of [the issue].

he decision to repeal an abortion zoning provision was unanimous. The Town of North Hempstead Board of Trustees rescinded Town Code Chapter 41A, titled “Pregnancy Termination Facilities,” on Sept.

Almost two-and-a-half hours were dedicated to Chapter 41-A at the public hearing and board discussion on Sept. 1. The law, enacted in 1971, one year after the state made abortions legal, regulated “pregnancy termination facilities” and mandated that they be affiliated with hospitals.

seem on their face reasonable, the reality is that they are enacted with an ulterior motive, especially laws enacted in the early 1970s, as this one was. The law makes it illegal to perform an abortion, whether it is done medically using prescribed drugs or otherwise, unless it is performed in a hospital or a facility administered by a hospital or facility having a hospital affiliation agreement. The law is antiquated and does not take into consideration the availability of medical abortions. Now, due to the advances in the field of medicine, a woman can take medication prescribed by a doctor in the privacy of her own home. Chapter 41-A is not just antiquated, but it places an undue burden on a woman who may want to terminate her pregnancy as well as on the medical professionals performing the procedure.”Sheadded, “I would like to take a brief moment to clarify a few points. The repeal of 41-A is not a zoning change. As we heard earlier, medical offices or clinics that may offer abortion procedures will not be popping up all over the place in residential areas. The repeal of 41-A will also not result in the town funding of abortions. These are just some things that came through by email. There is confusion because we are in a post-Roe world following decades of certainty around abortion restrictions. We now have uncertainty. A woman vulnerable and faced with a difficult decision should not have to engage in legal analysis to determine which laws apply to her and which don’t. The town board has no business entering the procedure room or a woman’s medicine cabinet and getting involved in these types of decisions. The town should not have a say and should not be putting an undue burden on a woman’s right to choose.”

Before offering the resolution for a vote, Lurvey said, “Abortions, even in clinics, as we have heard, are governed by state law, which is stricter than we could ever put in place. A speaker a while ago asked us where we stand on a woman’s right to choose. I can now answer that I am proudly pro choice and I am optimistic that we will hear tonight that a majority of my town board members are as well.”

Discussion of the repeal of the law, sponsored by Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey, had taken up a big chunk of the Aug. 4 town board meeting as well.

The Sept. 1 town board meeting drew a large crowd. (Screen Capture)

For many, 41-A was an antiquated law, unenforceable and the result of the thentown fathers’ defiance of the state’s liberalization of abortion.

Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte announced that she was pro choice. (Photo by Frank Rizzo)

He went on to say that he represents a portion of the town—Westbury and New Cassel—where many lack access to health care because of poverty, jobs that don’t provide health coverage, or because they’re undocumented.“Asasociety,we go to great lengths to provide adequate health care for everybody, but it doesn’t always work,” Troiano pointed out. “The hospital for them is the establishment, an institution where you go potentially to be deported. And that’s just a sad reality. That may not even be true, but that is their perception.”

Many in the audience, he pointed out,

Before public comment, Supervisor Jen DeSena called Town Attorney John Chiara to the podium to discuss the legalities of 41-A. The attorney said that it has never been challenged, but a similar law in the Village of Hempstead from the same period had been overturned in 1972 by an appellate-level court after an abortion provider sued the village. The case was Robin v. Village of Hempstead.

While I have been persuaded by the sincerity of the speakers that have come tonight, I am not persuaded by the arguments on both sides of the aisle.”

Unanimous vote after passionate debate

SEPTEMBER 14 - 20, 2022 • ANTON MEDIA GROUP4

For those against rescission, the law guaranteed that women would be protected from unaffiliated abortion providers and enhanced their safety during a procedure they consider rife with potential complications.

Before public comment, Lurvey stated, “All local laws regarding abortions must be carefully scrutinized. Often in laws that FRANK RIZZO

Getting1.to that 7-0 vote, however, unsurprisingly exposed the vast gulf that exists on the issue as passionate proponents of both sides got to have their say. At times, the law itself was incidental as speakers brought up the usual tropes of “baby body parts” being taken away from abortion clinics by sanitation workers or women talking of the “bad” pre-Roe days.

frizzo@antonmediagroup.com

I’d like to say that I believe that a woman’s right to choice extends to where she gets her health care.

The discussion soon involved electoral politics, with Lurvey wondering if a change in leadership in Albany would affect reproductive rights. Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Lee Zeldin. The Democrats currently enjoy big majorities in both houses of the legislature, but history is filled with surprising electoral reversals.

Repealing Local Abortion Laws

—Submitted by the office of Sen. Anna Kaplan

An independent abortion clinic, he argued, would present a safer environment and they would feel more comfortable than in a hospital or hospital-affiliated setting.

Councilman Peter Zuckerman comment ed, “I’d like to really thank everyone for coming out for two long evenings. This could not have been easy for all of you. Everyone came out twice and you know, we did extend the hearing, because we wanted to hear from everyone and we felt that possibly there were people who couldn’t attend, who weren’t able to speak and we wanted to hear from

Troiano concluded, “I vote yes to repeal 41-A,” as applause and cheers erupted.

Dalimonte noting, “Someone this evening asked if we were pro choice, and I want to let you know that I am pro choice and I vote aye. And thank you everyone for coming.”Alsovoting yes was DeSena who stated, “I support the repeal of this chapter and vote yes for it brings North Hempstead town code into conformity with state law and removes a chapter of our code which is unenforceable and superseded by the New York Public Health Law.”

would have no problems accessing an abortion provider, but women in his con stituency, “go to have a back alley abortion before they’re going to go to a hospital and risk having immigration come and take them from there.”

Senator Anna Kaplan (D–North Hills), along with Assemblywoman Gina L. Sillitti (D–Port Washington), held a press conference on the Nassau County Courthouse steps in Mineola on Sept. 8 to urge other municipalities to follow North Hempstead’s lead and repeal abortion restrictions.

“I’ve heard the assertion that clinics are not safe,” he continued. “I’ve heard anecdotal evidence that clinics are not safe. But I’ve heard no data at all to support that. In con trast, we’ve heard ample evidence provided tonight that suggests, that indicates, maybe even proves, that clinics are just as safe an environment as our hospitals. I’ve also gotten this from my own view of talking to doctors and talking to practitioners. That a great deal of forethought goes into the serving process when someone comes in for a counseling session. So I’d like to say that I believe that a woman’s right to choice extends to where she gets her health care.”

A press release noted that they “undertook a comprehensive review of municipal code for over 110 of Long Island’s counties, towns, villages and cities. Upon review, Kaplan and Sillitti discovered several municipalities, home to over 1.25 million Long Islanders, still have abortion restrictions on the books. [They] will join state legislative colleagues, North Hempstead officials, and advocates for women’s choice to call on local governments to repeal their abortion restrictions and protect women’s rights across Long Island in a post-Roe era.”

No one gave Putin a chance for political survival when he became president in 2000. The man was determined to end the civil war in Chechnya, which he did in ruthless fashion. Thanks to rising oil prices the Russian economy rebounded. Putin cut the top tax rate to 18 percent and gave tax credits to young couples having more than one child. In time, Putin felt his oats. His 2007 speech at the Munich security conference lambasted America’s bid for a unipolar world. A 2013 speech criticizing gay rights earned him many admirers in Europe and America. The 2014 invasion of Crimea was viewed by those same conservatives as an example of decisive action. For a time, Putin was hailed as the most powerful man on the planet. doing so, she lost her leadership position within the GOP House Caucus. Where was martyrdom getting Liz Cheney? A postscript: McConnell clearly hopes that the Democrats control the Senate this November, lest Trump receive credit for a GOP comeback. Cheney lost her quixotic re-election campaign in pro-Trump Wyoming. Will she mount a third party presidential bid in 2024?

The authors are correct about a nation that has seen nothing but strife in the new century: The 2000 election, the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the failure of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden to unite the country, the June 2020 riots and finally, Donald Trump’s out-of-the-blue presidency.Jan.6,2021, just as Sept. 11, 2001, changed nothing. How could it? The nation’s divisions are more severe than the authors may realize. The recent abortion decision highlights those divides as does the demographic revolution, the assaults on American history (108 monuments and statues were torn down or burnt down during the June 2020 riots), the definition of marriage, the voting patterns of urban America and its rural counties, and battles over the mere classroom teaching of American history. This book is partisan; however, the authors deliver no false optimism.PhilipShort’s comprehensive biography of Vladimir Putin ends with a seemingly contradictory note. Putin, the book jacket tells us, is the “world’s most dangerous man.” On the final page, Short predicts that once the Russo-Ukraine War ends, hostile relations between Russia and the West, even between that country and Ukraine willPutinsubside.follows a by-now familiar story: The young man’s fascination with espionage, a generally uneventful career as a KGB agent, a vice mayor of St. Petersburg under his friend Anatoly Sobchak, the transfer to Moscow, work in Boris Yeltsin’s faltering administration, and finally, the surprise appointment as Russia’s president once Yeltsin retired.

Russia. An aide came up with “sovereign democracy.” Russia would be democratic on its terms, not others. Putin may or may not have been a believer, but he came to define Russia as a Christian Orthodox nation. Short, meanwhile, sums up the dilemma in two pithy sentences: “America, the dominant global power, believes that its role is to lead. Russia refuses to be lead.” Is Putin that dangerous? Ask the Ukranians. However, he isn’t the most powerful man in the world. That title now belongs to Xi Jinping, premier of the People’s Republic of China. And herein is the story that will decide Putin’s legacy. With the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Putin made the fateful decision to pivot East. Goodbye to the West (if that’s what they want), hello to China and India as consumers of Russia’s energy reserves. The global economy has changed significantly during Putin’s reign. By 2000, 70 percent of the world’s GNP was in the hands of the G-7 nations. By 2020, that number had dropped to 43 percent, with China driving the wheel. Putin will gladly keep delivering energy to wealthy nations in Western Europe. Still, he believes Russia’s destiny is with the Orient.

The browning of our lawns does not mean the grass is dying. Rather it is a rather resourceful mecha nism of self-preservation for these plants called “going dormant”—a process that keeps the lawns alive for around six weeks. At that point they’ll definitely need a drink or the blades will take on a grayish hue that indicates imminent death.

Of course as a pastor I want to make the case that “keeping holy the Lord’s Day” is good for all of us. For those of us who recognize Sunday as the Lord’s Day it is time to get beyond our past COVID excuses and just come back to pray together again. Many churches were able to stream their Masses and services during the time of pandemic and some of the faithful got used to watching from afar. But that is like Facetiming the family on Thanksgiving Day instead of going over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house. “Being there” is one of the best forms of self-care possible.

example, if we let our children ‘watch’ church instead of “being church and participating, a lot is lost. By not coming to church in person the message is: “Your presence and participation don’t matter.” And your spiritual coach (i.e. the pastor) really feels the loss of the ‘team’ when few families come out to pray.

Once upon a time, the United States was in the midst of a series of violent crime waves. Cities were being hit with robberies, government corruption and countless other criminal chal lenges. It is also family care. Since the death of my parents, some of my close relatives are slowly moving away to jobs and homes out of state. Our best moments are when we can all be in the same room together, or even for some of us to be in the same car together as we travel to be with each other.

Driving around suburbia these days it is clear to see who is water ing their lawns and who is leaving it up to Mother Nature. “Mother,” it seems, has been neglecting this duty as a prolonged drought has kept the neighborhood bereft of needed rain.

Nature’s behavior is actually a pretty good metaphor for summer. We stop doing what we usually do and enter into the dormancy called “vacation,” but now that September has crept up on us, it’s time to get back to a time of growth, as will the lawns, once the rains come and the cool weather approaches.Thistimeof year calls for a little more self-care, just as the lawn that emerges from dormancy will need mowing again—and perhaps a bit of fertilizer to prepare it for winter. It might be easy to forget this self-care because we now have the back to school activities and regular work demands. We need to close the pools and bring the houseplants in. So much to do. And while we might notice the effect of an un-mowed lawn after a few weeks, we might not notice the detrimental effect all this busyness has on us.

The most common frost-tolerant crops for fall planting include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, parsnips, garlic, cabbage, collards and spinach. Many of these crops not only grow well during the fall, but they taste better after a light frost. Be sure to cover your plants as soon as any frost is forecasted to ensure your garden survives the winter.

Similar to fall lawn care, many gardens and trees can benefit from fertilizer before winter sets in. Fall fertilizer is best applied in late fall before the first frost, as it will help plants endure the approaching cold temperatures. Following these simple fall garden maintenance tips will help your plants survive the cold temperatures of winter. Whether you plan on growing a cool season crop, or you simply want to protect your garden, this fall garden checklist will ensure a healthy, thriving garden next spring.

as well as plants that are infested with disease. Tilling your garden is an excellent way to expose any dried plants or weeds. It will also reveal any pests hiding in your garden, including fall armyworms, which are most active during the fall.

As you remove plant debris from your garden, now is also an excellent time for removing gardening supplies. Items such as stakes, cages and labels should be gathered and put away to be used again next spring.

2. PREPARE YOUR PERENNIAL GARDEN FOR WINTER

If you’re looking to establish more trees and shrubs on your lawn, fall is the best time to plant while the ground is still workable. Generally, the ideal time to plant new trees is six weeks before the first sign of hard frost. Planting anytime between September through November will allow your new trees to establish their roots before winter sets in.

Pre-emergent weed killers are used for controlling weeds before they appear above the ground. To promote a weed-free garden next year, consider applying fall pre-emergents to your garden once all plant debris is removed.

4. PLANT A COVER CROP

Don’t forget to continue watering your perennials at least once a week until the ground freezes. Once the ground does freeze, cover the crown of your newly planted perennials with a four- to 5-inch layer of bark mulch. This mulch may also be used to cover perennials that are sensitive to frost.

5. PLANT FALL CROPS

Although the gardening season may be coming to a close, your perennial plants will continue growing until they go dormant in late fall. To prepare them for the colder temperatures, be sure to remove all weeds and any parts of the plant infested with disease or pests. If you’re planning on adding more plants to your garden, consider planting spring-blooming bulbs this fall while the soil is still warm.

A cover crop may be spread over your garden to prevent erosion and weed growth. It may consist of mustard, clover, peas or even a combination of cover crops. Once spring arrives, the cover crop may be turned over to add nutrients to the soil.

Visit www.sodsolutions.com for more lawn care products and advice.

For those who have trees and shrubs, autumn is the perfect season to check on your shrubbery and prepare them for winter. One way to care for your trees this fall is to cover the soil around them with mulch. Adding a fresh layer of mulch around the base of your tree will protect the roots from harsh winter conditions. Avoid covering the trunk with mulch, however, as this could cause rot and other diseases. In addition to mulching, fall is also an ideal time to prune your shrubs once dormancy has started.

had a sales price advantage ranging from 5.5 to 12.7 percent. That could mean an extra $16,500 to $38,100 in value on a $300,000 home.

It’s one area where every bit of work you do can pay off. For real. Renovation expert Bob Vila estimates that this first impression could add 20 percent to your home’s value (a figure that rivals, or sometimes surpasses, the return on a new kitchen or bath).

Adding curb appeal doesn’t have to cost an outrageous amount of money. You’d be surprised by how inexpensive “prettifying” your home’s front exterior can be, if you’re willing to do a little work yourself. Or maybe a lot of work. (Hey, you want to sell the place, right?)

A small investment in a new front porch light can work wonders, but you’ll also want to pay attention to the condition of any other light fixtures in front, like those that may be on either side of the garage, or the street light in your front yard. Yes, potential buyers will probably make their first visit during the day, but attractive light fixtures can really add to the appeal of a home even if the lights aren’t on.

What Is Curb Appeal?

CHECK LIGHT FIXTURES

Washing the windows is a given, but before you do that, think about giving your house a good power wash to remove the dirt, grime, and moss that may have accumulated over the years. This could save you the expense of repainting your entire home.

What is curb appeal? This all-important practice will improve how your home looks to buyers right as they pull up and park—or even as they drive by (slowly, one hopes). That includes your front yard, driveway, and your home’s exterior, from its paint job to the potted plants on your patio to even the welcome mat that greets people as they pass through your front door.

One of the most important aspects of curb appeal is getting the grounds to look as good as they possibly can. Alex X. Niemiera, a horticulturist at Virginia Tech, found that well-landscaped homes

needles, leaves, spare pickleballs, or other detritus that might have accumulated there. Buyers are justifiably picky about the condition of the roof, especially when it comes to pickleballs.

How to supercharge the first impression buyers have of your home

fact, it could look like it was used to house a pipe bomb, and you’ve just stopped paying attention. If it’s affixed to your house, you’ve probably forgotten about it, aesthetically speaking. Paint it, polish it, or replace it. You’ll be glad you did.

14B | DESIGN & DÉCOR • SEPTEMBER 14 - 20, 2022

urb appeal is both an art and a science. And since it’s a buyer’s first impression of your home, it can be essential in selling your home.

LANDSCAPINGSTRATEGIC

Once your house is shiny and clean, you may find that the entire house doesn’t need repainting—just the trim and the front door. While you’re at it, consider brightening the facade with a touch of contrasting color. You’ll be surprised by how a little pop of color can really freshen up the place.

This involves not only cutting the grass, but also clearing out any dead limbs, plants, and other unwanted foliage that might be hanging around. In addition, get rid of any tree branches or bushes that may make your yard look crowded and dark, and trim all hedges so that they look neat. Finally, plant some colorful flowers—best to do it a couple of weeks before the house goes on the market, so they’ve had the chance to grow in a bit and don’t look too contrived.

C

And when the lights are on? You may have just nailed the curb appeal deal.

2. Win the club with ace, cross to the ace of diamonds and lead a low diamond. If South follows low, finesse the nine. This assures nine tricks and the contract even if the nine loses to the jack. With North on lead, there is no combination of the cards that would allow the defenders to cash four heart tricks at this point. The worst that can happen is that you lose three heart tricks and a diamond.

Do not waste any future opportunity to save what little is left. If not for ourselves, then for our children. Preservation of old gives us our history and burnishes our knowledge of the past, and our excitement for the present and future.

We must finally wake up and come togeth er to advocate for and protect what little we have left of our past before it is too late. It is this very history that creates the backdrop allowing real estate and development to flourish. To lose these old buildings is to lose the essence of what makes Manhasset such a beautiful and desirable place to live and raise a family.Inthe end, Manhasset and its villages will get what they admire, will pay for, and ultimately, what they deserve. Manhasset is one of the only locales in all of New York State that still has never had a historical society. The only question now is whether this dark moment in our shared history will continue to repeat itself. The residents of Plandome Manor need to take heed that only a handful of historic sites remain and once they are gone, there is no turning back the clock.

The bitter distaste on Circle Drive for community progress was only matched by their complete nonchalance towards finding solutions to benefit all. This faction had no reason to come to the table as they were not interested in any form of compromise.

As members of the ad-hoc volunteer committee to save the Richardson House in Plandome Manor, we express our profound disappointment at the needless loss of one of Long Island’s great historical homes. How fitting that Manhasset will cele brate the coming 250th anniversary of the founding of America by demolishing one of its oldest buildings (one which predates the very signing of the Declaration of Independence).Insteadofenabling the feasible, fis cally-responsible plan to turn the house into a needed, permanent village hall for Plandome Manor, a small few Circle Drive residents with self-serving, us-against-them attitudes made it impossible. The adaptive reuse proposal was defeated by a narrow margin after a coordinated misinformation, harassment, and fear-mongering campaign. Not only does this deny the residents the hall they desired and deserved, but a beautiful home was forever lost in the process.

“The regrettable acrimonious publicity got in the way of honest collaborative communication between the board and the residents, which could have been avoided through alternatives, compromises and statesman leadership,” she stated. “Sadly, it has left an open wound which I would like to see Meriggiclosed.”has lived on Circle Drive for 31 years and noted, “This is the fourth time the residents have come together and fought to preserve the green space in question. elements.“Itwasa beautiful opportunity for me,” McGiff said. “I spent six days and you end up spending about three grand of your own money, but that’s nothing compared to what you pull out of there.”

Regarding the empty lot, Donno told the Manhasset Press after the referendum vote, “It’s subsidized by [all] our residents and it’s being used strictly by the residents of Circle Drive. That’s something that we need to discuss as a board.”

Donno is certain the village did its due diligence in making its case to the residents for passing the bond referendum.

The Future?

He spoke of various high-quality woods he uses in his business, such as mahogany and cypress and white oak. They’ve become expensive, with white oak jumping from $2 to $13/linear foot.

Apropos the negative vote, the mayor observed, “I do think a lot of it was distrust of government,” adding that inflation and other economic fears also contributed.

The lease for the current offices was signed in 2011 with then-landlord Tim Higgins and expired on Feb. 28, 2021. No extension was signed, according to Donno and Treasurer Marie DePalo, and it has been month-to-month since the expiration. Under the terms of the lease, the village is partially responsible for paying a portion of the property taxes, and the annual rental payments come out to about $55,000 per year.Town & Country Florists, next to the village offices, is the current landlord.

“We don’t want to create animosity between us and the board,” Pace said. “We were willing to work with them. And if they would have come to us in the beginning, I think we could have come to some kind of happy medium.”

“You can tell by the craftsmanship—it’s all hand cut, dovetails and mortise and tenon and everything’s pegged,” McGiff praised. “You know, I deal with this stuff all the time. So it’s wonderful that I was called and allowed to grab this stuff before it ended up in a McGiffdumpster.”lamented the destruction of many old houses on the East End, where he’s

He was particularly taken with the windows, with 12 panes in the top casement, over 12 on the bottom one and original wood framing.“They’re beautiful,” he said. “And you know, it’s a real shame because the amount of work and money that was put into bringing all of these architectural elements from Massachusetts was extraordinary. And it would have made a great village hall.”

resulting from the board meetings as well as the publicity efforts surrounding the resolution vote.

“I build furniture. I restore antiques. So I’m always having to match rosewood and walnut and mahogany and all different types of woods,” he said. “That’s why I love working on these old houses, because for me they’re no different than a beautiful antique. My approach is the same.”

‘Out With The New’

“My shop is filled with stuff right now. It’s unbelievable,” McGiff said of the bounty from the old house. He plans to use the various building elements in other historic houses he’s working on.

McGiff credited Tom Lang of Plandome Manor, a member of the committee which tried to save the house, for alerting him to the impending destruction. Lang also eased the way with the developer to enable the restorer to work in the house.

McGiff said that old growth wood was used in 18th century construction, assessing it as much more stable than what he called “the garbage” fast growth wood sold at lumber yards today.

“We notified the neighbors what I was up to, and so normally they would be screaming and moaning that somebody was working on a Saturday and a Sunday,” McGiff said.

The Richardson House represents for McGiff a lost era that had its own charms.

He found writing on the back of the mantels, he said, and was going to undertake research into the house, as well as compare its elements with other houses he’s restored.

Jeremiah McGiff, an architectural restorer, wrote of this picture, “[These are] 5 14-foot white pine 8”x 10” structural beams taken from the structure during demolition. You can see the roman numerals.” These are original to the circa 1730 house, he stated. (Courtesy of Jeremiah McGiff)

“That’s how we used to live and I’m all for getting back to that—that’s what these houses are, a record of a simpler life in America. It was not less imaginative, but it was simpler,” he said. “[The Richardson House] was beautifully done and meandered in a most amazing way. And it was true to the way the old houses were constructed. They just kept going out the back. And they’re great like that. I love how you can see how it was modest in the beginning, and then the family grew and the rooms continued and everything just went out the back.”

“All I know is that the landlord has the right to raise the rent because we have not signed anything,” Donno stated.

He is currently restoring a 1731 house in Setauket, and said the Richardson House front door will replace the front door there, and he will make use of the windows as well.

Jeremiah McGiff of Wild Boar Restoration in Brookhaven spent six days at the Richardson House before the demolition. He has spent decades as an antique restorer and historic preservation contractor. He removed 11 double-hung windows, 19 doors, two fireplace mantels and structural beams (which the demolition crew saved for him).

“We did everything that we needed to be done to study this house and to present the reports and the facts, and we used well-respected firms and people who came back to us and said, ‘It’s okay, you can move this house. There isn’t going to be traffic,’” the mayorMeetingssaid. to discuss the village’s plans in January, February and March all turned contentious at times, with harsh words and accusations of misinformation and bad faith.“No board should have to go through this,” Donno admitted of the bruised feelings engendered by the gatherings.

In a recent email, McGiff said, “I am cur rently working on the 1740 Woodhull House in Miller Place, and also the 1721 Hallock House in Rocky Point. When I can use some of these elements on these sights, I will. In the Woodhull House, part of the second floor post and beam is damaged and we are repairing it with timbers from the Richardson House.”

These doors, according to McGiff, date back to the original 1730 portion of the house. (Courtesy of Jeremiah McGiff)

RICHARDSON HOUSE from page 3

worked for many years. He and his mentor George Schulte used to have the keys to many houses and would work on restoration when the summer season ended. He ex pressed contempt for the huge, multi-million homes that replaced the classics.

Using a generator and electric saws, he got to work. He was impressed by the original 18th century fireplace mantels, the timber framing and wide plank wood flooring.

McGiff said he is planning to send a letter to developer Lindenmeier thanking him for allowing him the time to save the antique

Pace said she and other residents are willing to work with the village to find an alternate location.

Rebuilding a home is almost always more expensive than building a comparable new one, considering demolition costs, complexities of reconstruction and required upgrades to meet current local codes and It’sordinances.alsoimportant to know about your coverage. ere are three di erent levels of replacement cost coverage:

How Home Market Conditions Can Affect You— Even When You’re Not Buying or Selling

How you may be at risk. Consider these possible scenarios: Your home is insured at $1 million. A er an electrical re causes a total loss, it appears that it will actually cost $1.5 million to rebuild because of increased construction costs. You purchased your dream home for $2.5 million. e replacement cost is estimated at $2 million. Six months later, your home is destroyed by a hurricane. Whole neighborhoods are destroyed. Demand, price for labor and construction material costs soar, driving up the cost to rebuild. e actual cost to rebuild your home is $4.5 million. Depending on the insurance you chose and the coverage options, you may not receive enough to rebuild.

If you own a high-value home and are not working with a uent or high net worth insurance experts, you are likely to be underinsured if you have a total loss. Working together, Hamptons Risk Management and Nationwide Private Client have the experience and cra ed coverage high achievers need – so you can trust that you’re properly protected.

• Extended replacement cost generally pays to have your home repaired or rebuilt to its condition before the loss even if the cost exceeds the policy limit up to a capped amount. e capped amount is a percentage, such as 25% or 50%, over the amount for which the home was insured.

Over the last few years, the housing and reconstruction markets have experienced unprecedented change on a national and global scale. ese shi s have had a direct impact on home replacement costs and homeowner premiums throughout the insurance industry. Rising costs of construction materials and labor combined with building code updates and increased demand for new homes and renovations have all impacted home insurance.

• Basic replacement cost generally pays up to the exact limit of your policy.
