environmental cleanups, community access to a new marina and a promenade connecting North Hempstead Beach Park.
The site at 145 West Shore Rd. has been a masonry contractor in Port Washington for years. Materials have been shipped in and out from that location on Port’s coast. SLC plans to clean up that waterfront area by removing two sunken barges, a sunken tugboat, some truck tires and various other materials in the water on the coast.
working on West Shore Road designed the waterfront area with the plans for North Hempstead Beach park in mind to keep the appearance cohesive. With that in mind, the sewage system will be built to accommodate the whole site and the restaurant in the Beach Park renovation plans if the town should build it.

As the public hearing period begins, Southern Land Company is laying out its plans in a detailed manner for residents to make informed decisions and opinions. SLC builds high-end luxury family hous ing all around the country, most of which have an affordable component, such as workforce housing. The proposed building for West Shore Road will have an option for residents to qualify for affordable housing.
“This meeting is going to be very well attended,” said Councilmember Mariann Dalimonte. “Several residents have requested to keep the public comment period open as long as possible. And after many discussions with the commissioner of planning, the public comment period must extend for at least 30 days from the date of circulation [of the Draft Environmental Impact Starement], which was on Aug. 2. I recommend we extend the deadline to Oct. 31, which will be 90 days.”
“Because of the grade change from the street to the water, all runoff over the years goes down off the street through the site and into the water when it rains,” said Rossi. “All the sediment under the water is pretty contaminated. And to build the marina we have planned, we have to dredge. So we will pull out a lot of the contaminated soils and piles.”
t the Town of North Hempstead Sept. 1 town board meeting, a date was set for a special meeting on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. for a public hearing concerning 145 West Shore Rd. For some time now, residents have been discussing and debating the plans Southern Land Company (SLC) have proposed for 145 West Shore Rd.

In addition to cleaning up the site, a marina and promenade open to the public are in SLC’s plans for the West Shore Road site. The marina is estimated to have 20-30 boat slips, and the promenade that runs along the waterfront will be about 700 ft. in length.Thedesigners

As the public comment period gets extended for the proposed development, Southern Land Company wants to make its plans known
The plans to embark on this project first began in January 2020, when Councilmember Dalimonte started exploring the idea of reintroducing oysters into the bay as a way of helping the environment. North Hempstead Reminds Residents To Conserve Water

The Town of North Hempstead would like to remind residents to conserve water and protect our sole source aquifers throughout the summer season and all year long. There are many simple tips residents can follow to help preserve our environment by changing lawn watering habits and implementing some water recycling programs.
• Limit watering to early morning and evenings – before the sun comes up and after the sun goes down
• Be sure to check sprinkler heads and fix or replace ones that are broken
• Adding mulch around plants will help with moisture and water retention and helps reduce water use
Thep.m.Town is also airing a PSA talking about the importance of fixing leaky faucets, washing your car at a car wash rather than manually at home, and not overwatering
your lawn during hot summer months. The commercial also encourages residents to purchase items such as showerheads and faucets that have the logo of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Watersense program, of which the Town is a partner, in order to cut water use by 20 percent.

No one gave Putin a chance for political survival when he became president in 2000. The man was determined to end the civil war in Chechnya, which he did in ruthless fashion. Thanks to rising oil prices the Russian economy rebounded. Putin cut the top tax rate to 18 percent and gave tax credits to young couples having more than one child. In time, Putin felt his oats. His 2007 speech at the Munich security conference lambasted America’s bid for a unipolar world. A 2013 speech criticizing gay rights earned him many admirers in Europe and America. The 2014 invasion of Crimea was viewed by those same conservatives as an example of decisive action. For a time, Putin was hailed as the most powerful man on the planet. Through it all, Putin was searching for an identity to fit post-communist

Russia. An aide came up with “sovereign democracy.” Russia would be democratic on its terms, not others. Putin may or may not have been a believer, but he came to define Russia as a Christian Orthodox nation. Short, meanwhile, sums up the dilemma in two pithy sentences: “America, the dominant global power, believes that its role is to lead. Russia refuses to be lead.” Is Putin that dangerous? Ask the Ukranians. However, he isn’t the most powerful man in the world. That title now belongs to Xi Jinping, premier of the People’s Republic of China. And herein is the story that will decide Putin’s legacy. With the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Putin made the fateful decision to pivot East. Goodbye to the West (if that’s what they want), hello to China and India as consumers of Russia’s energy reserves. The global economy has changed significantly during Putin’s reign. By 2000, 70 percent of the world’s GNP was in the hands of the G-7 nations. By 2020, that number had dropped to 43 percent, with China driving the wheel. Putin will gladly keep delivering energy to wealthy nations in Western Europe. Still, he believes Russia’s destiny is with the Orient.

The authors are correct about a nation that has seen nothing but strife in the new century: The 2000 election, the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the failure of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden to unite the country, the June 2020 riots and finally, Donald Trump’s out-of-the-blue presidency.Jan.6,2021, just as Sept. 11, 2001, changed nothing. How could it? The nation’s divisions are more severe than the authors may realize. The recent abortion decision highlights those divides as does the demographic revolution, the assaults on American history (108 monuments and statues were torn down or burnt down during the June 2020 riots), the definition of marriage, the voting patterns of urban America and its rural counties, and battles over the mere classroom teaching of American history. This book is partisan; however, the authors deliver no false optimism.PhilipShort’s comprehensive biography of Vladimir Putin ends with a seemingly contradictory note. Putin, the book jacket tells us, is the “world’s most dangerous man.” On the final page, Short predicts that once the Russo-Ukraine War ends, hostile relations between Russia and the West, even between that country and Ukraine willPutinsubside.follows a by-now familiar story: The young man’s fascination with espionage, a generally uneventful career as a KGB agent, a vice mayor of St. Petersburg under his friend Anatoly Sobchak, the transfer to Moscow, work in Boris Yeltsin’s faltering administration, and finally, the surprise appointment as Russia’s president once Yeltsin retired.

doing so, she lost her leadership position within the GOP House Caucus. Where was martyrdom getting Liz Cheney? A postscript: McConnell clearly hopes that the Democrats control the Senate this November, lest Trump receive credit for a GOP comeback. Cheney lost her quixotic re-election campaign in pro-Trump Wyoming. Will she mount a third party presidential bid in 2024?

Once upon a time, the United States was in the midst of a series of violent crime waves. Cities were being hit with robberies, government corruption and countless other criminal chal lenges. Of course as a pastor I want to make the case that “keeping holy the Lord’s Day” is good for all of us. For those of us who recognize Sunday as the Lord’s Day it is time to get beyond our past COVID excuses and just come back to pray together again. People, like lawns, need quite a bit of maintenance, particularly around this time of year. (Photo by Prasannanossam3/ CC BY-SA 4.0)
Nature’s behavior is actually a pretty good metaphor for summer. We stop doing what we usually do and enter into the dormancy called “vacation,” but now that September has crept up on us, it’s time to get back to a time of growth, as will the lawns, once the rains come and the cool weather approaches.Thistimeof year calls for a little more self-care, just as the lawn that emerges from dormancy will need mowing again—and perhaps a bit of fertilizer to prepare it for winter. It might be easy to forget this self-care because we now have the back to school activities and regular work demands. We need to close the pools and bring the houseplants in. So much to do. And while we might notice the effect of an un-mowed lawn after a few weeks, we might not notice the detrimental effect all this busyness has on us.

Recently I wrote this to my parishioners: “Could you imagine that parents would want their child to belong to a baseball team and then say, ‘You don’t really need to go to any games. Just join your team remotely!’ This kind of belonging still connects their child with the team, but by not actually participating in person, the message is: ‘Your presence and participation doesn’t matter.’ And how do you think the coach feels when team members are only remote members?

f you’re not sure where to begin on your fall garden maintenance checklist, the best place to start is by removing all dried plants and weeds in your garden bed. 1. CLEAN UP VEGETABLE/HERB GARDENS

Fall Garden Maintenance Tips

As the autumn season approaches, it’s an excellent time for homeowners to examine their gardens and prepare them for the cooler temperatures to come. Although you may think of gardening only during the summer months, caring for your garden during the fall can help it survive the winter season and produce a healthy crop next year. Whether you’re growing a vegetable garden, flower bed or even trees and shrubs, these fall garden maintenance tips will ensure your entire landscape is ready for temperatures to drop.

If you’re looking to establish more trees and shrubs on your lawn, fall is the best time to plant while the ground is still workable. Generally, the ideal time to plant new trees is six weeks before the first sign of hard frost. Planting anytime between September through November will allow your new trees to establish their roots before winter sets in.

7. APPLY FALL FERTILIZER

As you remove plant debris from your garden, now is also an excellent time for removing gardening supplies. Items such as stakes, cages and labels should be gathered and put away to be used again next spring.
Don’t forget to continue watering your perennials at least once a week until the ground freezes. Once the ground does freeze, cover the crown of your newly planted perennials with a four- to 5-inch layer of bark mulch. This mulch may also be used to cover perennials that are sensitive to frost.
5. PLANT FALL CROPS
as well as plants that are infested with disease. Tilling your garden is an excellent way to expose any dried plants or weeds. It will also reveal any pests hiding in your garden, including fall armyworms, which are most active during the fall.
For those who have trees and shrubs, autumn is the perfect season to check on your shrubbery and prepare them for winter. One way to care for your trees this fall is to cover the soil around them with mulch. Adding a fresh layer of mulch around the base of your tree will protect the roots from harsh winter conditions. Avoid covering the trunk with mulch, however, as this could cause rot and other diseases. In addition to mulching, fall is also an ideal time to prune your shrubs once dormancy has started.
While the summer growing season may be over, there are still many plants you can grow over the winter. The most common frost-tolerant crops for fall planting include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, parsnips, garlic, cabbage, collards and spinach. Many of these crops not only grow well during the fall, but they taste better after a light frost. Be sure to cover your plants as soon as any frost is forecasted to ensure your garden survives the winter.
Visit www.sodsolutions.com for more lawn care products and advice.
—Sod Solutions/Sod University

Similar to fall lawn care, many gardens and trees can benefit from fertilizer before winter sets in. Fall fertilizer is best applied in late fall before the first frost, as it will help plants endure the approaching cold temperatures. Following these simple fall garden maintenance tips will help your plants survive the cold temperatures of winter. Whether you plan on growing a cool season crop, or you simply want to protect your garden, this fall garden checklist will ensure a healthy, thriving garden next spring.
6. APPLY FALL PRE-EMERGENTS
FALL GARDEN from page 3B
4. PLANT A COVER CROP
Although the gardening season may be coming to a close, your perennial plants will continue growing until they go dormant in late fall. To prepare them for the colder temperatures, be sure to remove all weeds and any parts of the plant infested with disease or pests. If you’re planning on adding more plants to your garden, consider planting spring-blooming bulbs this fall while the soil is still warm.

2. PREPARE YOUR PERENNIAL GARDEN FOR WINTER

4B | DESIGN & DÉCOR • SEPTEMBER 14 - 20, 2022
3. CARE FOR TREES AND SHRUBS
Pre-emergent weed killers are used for controlling weeds before they appear above the ground. To promote a weed-free garden next year, consider applying fall pre-emergents to your garden once all plant debris is removed.

A cover crop may be spread over your garden to prevent erosion and weed growth. It may consist of mustard, clover, peas or even a combination of cover crops. Once spring arrives, the cover crop may be turned over to add nutrients to the soil.

Whether you want an indoor jungle overflowing with plants or a few well-placed options to soften a room, there are many houseplants available to fit your needs and complement your home.

This year’s inductees are Caitlin Fitzpatrick (2006), Jacqueline Hehir (2004), Timothy Langton (1992), James McKenna (1975), Stephen Shackel (service award for 35 years coaching multiple sports and levels), and Norman Taylor (1956).

At 7:00 p.m., the annual “Taste of Port Washington” Dinner Dance kicks off at the Polish-American Hall. This year’s Community Honoree is the Port Washington Parent Council Board. Food for the Dinner Dance’s cocktail hour and dinner will be catered from Port’s wonderful restaurants. Entertainment features performances by Sequel (waiting for confirmation).

The parade, which begins at 11:30 a.m., is truly heartwarming since it demonstrates tremendous community pride. All seven of Port Washington’s public schools, in addition to many local organizations, participate. The parade starts at Main Street near Belleview Avenue and ends on Campus Drive. This year’s Grand Marshals are family-owned businesses that have operated in Port Washington continuously for three or more generations. At least ten have been identified.

However, Coach Kevin Cloghessy, in his fifth year as the program’s head coach, is confident he can develop a winning game plan.“This doesn’t impact our preparation; right now, the game plan is to focus on ourselves and continue to build from one day to the next,” said Cloghessy.

Joseph N. Canigiani Real Estate of 113 Main Street was founded by the late Joseph N. Canigiani, a well-known local real estate developer, who was joined by his son Joseph A. Canigiani as the business transitioned to management of their real estate holdings and then his grandson James J. Canigiani and James’ wife Karina. For three generations, the Canigiani family has been proud to serve their community by providing Port Washington residents with rental housing and fellow Port Washington business owners with retail and commercial properties.

Anthony’s World of Floors

Anthony’s World of Floors has been owned and operated by the Garofalo family since 1972. Three generations of Garofalos have strived to ensure quality, reliability, and expert craftsmanship for over 50 years. The current owners are second-generation Bobby Garofalo & Joe Garofalo, and third-generation Nichole Garofalo, who all run the day-to-day operations. Under the guidance of Anthony Garofalo, Anthony’s World of Floors has become a household name in its community. This close-knit family and company have built a reputation they are proud of. The business and the Garofalo family believe in giving back to the community that supports it. They plan to continue to provide quality carpet, flooring & installations for many more generations in the future.
Campbell’s Carpet & Service was started by Skip & Kathy Campbell in 1965. For the first 20 years they ran their business from their home. Skip installed & measured during the day while Kathy took care of the phones, accounting and ordering. In the evenings Skip would return home for dinner and evening appointments with clients in their home showroom. Their daughter Kim came to work for them in 1985 and shortly after that the business moved out of their home and into a new showroom. In 2021 the showroom moved to their current location of 356 Port Washington Blvd. Their entry into carpet & upholstery cleaning 40 years ago was born out of demand from their clients to help service the carpets they were selling and installing. The warehouse and cleaning division is currently located at 10 Secatoag Ave, and is headed up by Evan; Skip & Kathy’s grandson - the 3rd generation of Campbell involved in the business. Campbell’s longevity can be summed up by the incredible work ethic and dedication to customer satisfaction of Skip & Kathy,

which was firmly ingrained in both Kim and Evan. Staying on top of the latest styles, and technology is a close second as it leads directly to customer satisfaction. As for a 4th generation - they haven’t been born yet... but hopefully.

Alper’s was established in 1911. They are Port Washington’s oldest store (and possibly business.) They were first opened as Samuel Alper Jewelers just a few doors down the block from their current location. The business has evolved over the years into the current hardware store format. Their ability to change with times and the needs of Port Washington is constant. In the past, Alper’s sold parts to Model-Ts, the first color TVs in Port Washington and sporting goods. Now, in addition to their core hardware departments, they sell men’s apparel from Carhartt and even BBQ sauce and pizza ovens. They are currently in their fourth generation of ownership and the fifth has worked there as well.

S.F. Falconer Florist has been a pillar in Port Washington for over 100 years. The founder of the firm, Simon Frederick Falconer, was a native of Scotland who came to America in 1905. He resided in a small house on South Maryland Avenue which today is part of the store erected on that site. After his death in 1960, the business was taken over by his son, Frederick, who ran it with his wife Dorothy. Fred Sr. retired in 1980 and Fred Jr. took over and is the current owner. He is an interior plant scape designer with an incredible knowledge of plants and flowers. In addition, he is a 48-year member of the Port Washington Fire Department, Treasurer of the Port Washington Benevolent Exempts Association and a Vice-Commander of the American Legion. He has served a multitude of community organizations including the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Port Washington Lions Club, Cancer Care, the Port Youth Association, the Pride in Port Committee and Port’s PAL program. It is no wonder Fred Jr. was chosen as the Community Chest of Port Washington 2019 Citizen of the Year. His devotion to Port Washington has been noted as “one of the most caring and generous contributors” to our community.

Shields Plumbing & Hardware
The Shields Family for over 105 years has been and continues to be “Here to Help”. John Francis Shields served in World War I. He returned from his service in the United States Army to serve the community of Port Washington. John established “Shields Bros.”, a Plumbing, Heating, Roofing, and Hardware business, serving the North Shore communities. John and his wife, Helen, lived on Summit Road in Beacon Hill. They raised their only son John Edmond Shields, known as “Jack”, to know and grow the family busi nesses. Jack served as a counterintelligence officer in the Korean War from 1952-1954. After Jack’s overseas service and the unfor tunate passing of his father, he took the reins of the Shields businesses. Jack and his wife, Ann, introduced their children: JP, Patti, Rob, and Kevin at very early ages to cultivate their knowledge of the many moving parts of the family businesses. A devastating fire in 1990 consumed the Shields’ brick and mortar establishment. The business immediately reopened across the street. The challenge to rebuild strengthened their drive and resolve resulting in the stately building residing over lower Main Street today. Sadly, Jack passed away in 2006 leaving the businesses to the third generation. Ann continued to wo-man the front counter every weekend until COVID forced her into retirement. Today, Shields Plumbing and Hardware, thanks to the many generations of loyal customers and dedicated employees, continues to thrive. Patti and Kevin are now at the helm of the family businesses cherished by a century of family members. The Shields businesses are still “Here to Help”, every day, seven days a week.

In 1967 Maura Bros. moved to Port Washington under the leadership of John Sr. who was at the helm up until his retirement in 1976, following which his two sons, John Jr. & Ronald, took over the business. Today Maura Bros. has moved into its fourth generation and continues the traditions started in the 1930s, affording its customers the best in quality, service and design, with brothers John and Rob embracing those same principles of integrity, honesty and customer satisfaction that their great-grandfather instilled in the business at its inception.

In 1939, brothers Mario and John Maura entered into the landscape gardening and maintenance business being operated by their father Michelangelo. The two brothers worked side by side until 1940 when John entered into the military service. The business continued to evolve and soon added a quality nursery and garden supply center. The Maura brothers were reunited following John’s discharge in 1945 and together continued to provide their customers with professional service and quality landscape design. The Maura Garden Center was renowned for its spectacular offering of Christmas trees, wreaths and roping during the holiday season. Maura Bros. now offers more than just landscaping and maintenance and provides masonry, asphalt services, retaining walls, drainage
The office of Dr. Herman Katims was opened at 76 Main Street in October of 1938. The office was expanded in 1982 when he was joined by his son, Dr. Sanford Katims and was further expanded to a third storefront in 1992. Dr. Herman has passed on, but Dr. Sandy’s daughter, Dr. Rachel Katims joined the practice in 2019. They specialize in treatment of eye diseases including glaucoma, the fitting of contact lenses, and they have a large selection of eyeglasses. They’ve been here for 84 years for several reasons; Port Washington is such a special place and Dr. Herman always came home from the office happy. He loved Port Washington and the people here that make it so special. This was what Dr. Sandy saw for so many years and what encouraged him to follow in his father’s footsteps. Naturally, Dr. Rachel was encouraged for the same reasons. Dr. Sandy is married to Amy who manages a pro-shop for SportTime Tennis in Syosset. Dr. Rachel is married to Scott Schwartz who is an OFAC officer / BSA officer at Anchorage Bank.

Steve began his ‘middle school’ career. In addition, he coached eighth-grade softball. Continuing his goal of pride for his players, he re-vitalized the players’ uniforms, replaced the digital scoreboards, and facilitated new glass backboards and rims for both gyms. He worked with the Varsity coaches to institute philosophies and offenses that would create continuity with the 7-12 programs.
The philosophy of ‘winning is not everything’ – yet teaching the games, and seeing improvement in players’ skills throughout the seasons, was his accomplishment. Teams were a part of the ‘Shack Attack,’ and ‘Shackelisms’ are what evolved and what kids remember – ‘butt in the gut’, ‘enjoy the religious experience’, ‘catch the darn ball’ are comments that Steve used daily.
In 1987, Steve was approached by the Athletic Director to be the boys’ varsity basketball coach. He accepted the position with a primary mission of creating an atmosphere where the athletes were part

Q What aspects of the board do you feel have made the biggest impact on community-building across the Port Washington School District?
What are some initiatives that the Parent Council Board organizes and/ or supports?

Q
The PW Parents’ Council was established in 1998 to create a structure for parents, educators, and home-school associations to work efficiently and effectively with district administration in pursuit of common goals: fostering the well-being of our district’s children and helping them achieve their fullest potential.

A

Every year, the Parents’ Council organizes several important initiatives to serve our district’s families in need, from the winter and spring clothing drives at the Manorhaven Pool, to a community-wide holiday gift card collection from which families across all seven schools and the Port Pre-K Throughoutbenefit.theschool year, Parents’ Council serves as a liaison between our schools’ parent organizations and district administration, amplifying parent voices on the issues affecting Port students and providing the community with important information about what is happening in our schools and our town. Each year, Parents’ Council hosts several CommUNITY Conversations—discussions or presentations that bring together parents, educators, administrators and often, outside experts,
Q
A While the importance of Parents’ Council’s public-facing community outreach efforts cannot be overstated, one tremendous impact of our work that most families feel but never see is the coordination we facilitate across the district’s HSAs, PTA and district administration. Over the past few years, our community was tested by events and forces that pushed people apart—the pandemic, a difficult economic climate, and a divisive socio-political environment among them. Yet the need for connection and collaboration was never greater. Parents’ Council rose to that challenge, opening lines of communication across all of our parent organizations, and fostering increased connection and collaboration with administration. With Parents’ Council’s support, our district’s nine parent organizations have never worked more collaboratively than they do today, communicating regularly, openly and in a unified way, to ensure that students across our buildings are receiving consistently excellent, equitable and enriching school experiences.
This year’s Pride in Port Community Honoree is the Port Washington Parents’ Council Board. The executive board consists of Co-President Jessica Melwani, Co-President Sara Klein, Treasurer Sandra Alvarez and Secretary Sara Raber. The Port Washington Parents’ Council is a not-forprofit volunteer organization focused on collaboration and community-building across our district’s five elementary schools, middle and high schools. The board serves as a liaison to district administration, helps amplify parent voices, facilitates coordination with community resources, and conducts important outreach initiatives. Here is a bit more about the Port Washington Parents’ Council Board.

For the past 33 years, Pride in Port has been a significant celebration for the community. Port Washington comes together to celebrate school spirit and community pride. The Port Washington News asked some community members to share their favorite memories from previous Pride in Port celebrations; here are their responses.

PridePORT In Port Memories

I’m excited to experience my first Pride-in-Port celebration this September. I’ve heard about the long history of this annual event and numerous opportunities to bring the entire community together during the parade, carnival, hall of fame ceremony, and football game. GO VIKINGS!

One fond memory I have of Pride in Port weekend would have to be my freshman year prior to the pandemic, when me and my friends were able to watch the homecoming game together. The environment at the event was fantastic and I remember the school spirit was spectacular. Since that was the only fully normal homecoming I have been to so far, it has always held a dear place in my heart.

This involves not only cutting the grass, but also clearing out any dead limbs, plants, and other unwanted foliage that might be hanging around. In addition, get rid of any tree branches or bushes that may make your yard look crowded and dark, and trim all hedges so that they look neat. Finally, plant some colorful flowers—best to do it a couple of weeks before the house goes on the market, so they’ve had the chance to grow in a bit and don’t look too contrived.

Once your house is shiny and clean, you may find that the entire house doesn’t need repainting—just the trim and the front door. While you’re at it, consider brightening the facade with a touch of contrasting color. You’ll be surprised by how a little pop of color can really freshen up the place.
Washing the windows is a given, but before you do that, think about giving your house a good power wash to remove the dirt, grime, and moss that may have accumulated over the years. This could save you the expense of repainting your entire home.

Adding curb appeal doesn’t have to cost an outrageous amount of money. You’d be surprised by how inexpensive “prettifying” your home’s front exterior can be, if you’re willing to do a little work yourself. Or maybe a lot of work. (Hey, you want to sell the place, right?)
What is curb appeal? This all-important practice will improve how your home looks to buyers right as they pull up and park—or even as they drive by (slowly, one hopes). That includes your front yard, driveway, and your home’s exterior, from its paint job to the potted plants on your patio to even the welcome mat that greets people as they pass through your front door.

It’s one area where every bit of work you do can pay off. For real. Renovation expert Bob Vila estimates that this first impression could add 20 percent to your home’s value (a figure that rivals, or sometimes surpasses, the return on a new kitchen or bath).
Well-landscaped homes have a sales price advantage.

A small investment in a new front porch light can work wonders, but you’ll also want to pay attention to the condition of any other light fixtures in front, like those that may be on either side of the garage, or the street light in your front yard. Yes, potential buyers will probably make their first visit during the day, but attractive light fixtures can really add to the appeal of a home even if the lights aren’t on.
And when the lights are on? You may have just nailed the curb appeal deal.
REPAIR AND CLEAN THE ROOF
One of the most important aspects of curb appeal is getting the grounds to look as good as they possibly can. Alex X. Niemiera, a horticulturist at Virginia Tech, found that well-landscaped homes

orth Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and the Town Board remind residents that the next Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park (North Lot).

N
Leo made wine with a century-old press, labeling the bottles “Vini Cimini” to mark special occasions. He was an active member of the Sons of Italy, Knights of Columbus, and UNICO. Proud of his cultural heritage, he organized the Port Washington Public Library’s Italian Heritage and Culture Month beginning in 1992.
Town UpcomingResidentsRemindsAboutS.T.O.P.Event

Leo enjoyed hosting large family gatherings—especially cookouts—where he manned the grill. He had an a nity for woodworking building furniture, toys, and gifts. He loved family trips, rst to Bear Mountain, which may have reminded him of his native Opi, and later to a second home in upstate New York with space for guests. More recently he enjoyed a week in Rhode Island, road trip through California, and time at a lake house with his family.
He and his friends often snuck into Yankee Stadium to watch games, collect autographs, and trade comics with Yogi Berra. Despite frequent trips to watch the Bombers, Leo was at heart a Boston Red Sox fan. After graduating Dewitt Clinton High School, Leo enrolled in night classes at City College of New York while working days at Consolidated Edison. He rose to Central Stores Manager at ConEd before retiring in 1996. After a long day of work and night school, he studied until 3 a.m., then reviewed his little brothers’ homework, which they regularly left on his bed. At CCNY he met a classmate’s sister, Laura, who became the love of his life. Leo graduated in 1963 with a degree in mathematics and the couple married in 1965. Leo and Laura lived in Borough Park, Queens Village, and nally Port Washington, where they raised three children.
Leo was a loving Nonno to his grandchildren D’Angelo and Stella Rose. He told them stories, played games, picked them up from school, and cheered as heartily for his grandson’s baseball team as the Red Sox. He was a longtime parishioner at St. Peter of Alcantara Church. In his retirement Leo took on several volunteer roles including Religious Education teacher and Eucharistic minister.

JOSEPH KNIZEWSKI
Leo arrived in New York speaking no English so he was placed in rst grade. Determined to catch up and graduate with his age cohort, he quickly gained uency, a Bronx accent, and life-long friends while playing stickball and stoopball with the other boys in his neighborhood.

Leo was born December 6, 1935 in a mountaintop Italian village while his father was away working in New York. World War II would prolong the absence. Leo, his mother Gelsomina, and elder sister Anna survived the distance, wartime scarcity, malnutrition, and bombing raids in Europe. He met his father for the rst time in 1945. Two years later Leo emigrated to New York with his mother, sister, and scores of other US military dependents on converted troop ship SS Saturnia.

He loved and was beloved by family, colleagues, and friends. He was predeceased by his son Leopoldo, sister Anna, and son-in-law Gary. He is survived by his wife Laura, daughters Claudia (Gary) and Marisa (Doug), brothers Anthony, Frank, and Danny, grandchildren D’Angelo and Stella Rose, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and godchildren.
Joseph is survived by Theresa, and sons Christopher and Thomas; siblings Edward, Marianne, Julianne, and Ritamarie and their families. A mass will be said in honor of Joseph and his parents, Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Joseph Knizewski passed away unexpectedly on February 17, 2022 in Marion, MA. Born October 1st, 1959, he was the oldest of five children of Rita and Edward Knizewski. He graduated from Schreiber High School in 1977 and SUNY Maritime College in 1981. Joseph had an accomplished 40-year career in Marine Engineering. He married Theresa Maggio in 1989.

He was an avid reader and raconteur, especially of history. He created and led a nonpro t to research and honor Long Island’s forgotten immigrant sandminers, who toiled to excavate the sand barged to Manhattan and mixed into cement to build the City. His enthusiasm, persistence, and devotion to the monument inspired Port Washington neighbors, industry leaders, and Italian Americans around the country to donate to the project. The Sandminers Monument Park in Port Washington opened in October 2011.

“Improperly disposing of dangerous chemical wastes could potentially contam inate our water supply, so programs like S.T.O.P. are essential to continue to ensure the Town and our residents are responsi ble environmental stewards,” Supervisor DeSena said. “I’m proud that the Town will once again offer this amazing program that offers our residents a safe, convenient, and environmentally sound method of disposing their hazardous household waste.”
In lieu of owers, the family suggest contributions to the Sandminers Monument.

The final S.T.O.P program for 2022 will be held on Sunday, Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park (North Lot).
The S.T.O.P. program offers Town of North Hempstead residents the opportunity to dispose of dangerous and chemical wastes that are too dangerous to dispose of with rou tine curbside pickups. Residents can return items such as aerosols, household chemicals, pesticides, disinfectants, fertilizers, bulbs, thermostats, rechargeable and lithium batteries, TVs and computers. Latex and water-based paints, once dried out (usually 24-36 hours after the lid is removed) can be placed in a trash bag and thrown out with your regular household garbage. Latex and water-based paints will not be accepted at the S.T.O.P. collection site. Oil-based paints, on the other hand, are considered hazardous, and will be accepted at any S.T.O.P. program.
Pharmaceuticals will not be accepted at S.T.O.P. events, however the Town will be collecting pharmaceuticals at “Shed the Meds” events. The next event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022 at Michael J. Tully Park located at 1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park. The S.T.O.P. events also have a clothing donation area. “Now is the time for the Town of North Hempstead to be a leader in redevelopment on Long Island and this project will be the way to go,” wrote Pally.
In addition to removing the sunken barges, tugboat, and steel cribbing from the water and shoreline, SLC has planned improvements to help conserve energy. Benefits and Impacts
While opinions on SLC’s plans for 145 West Shore Road are drastically divided, support for the proposed project is evident. During the pandemic, SLC hosted webinars for people to come to listen to their plans and provide input, where they saw many people getting excited about the idea of this Craigproject.Johnson with Long Point Advisors has been in Port Washington since 1976. Johnson served as a Nassau County Legislator and a New York State Senator. Johnson is excited to see what can come from SLC’s development and how it can contribute to the community.

Residents have raised questions about the environmental, economic, traffic and school impacts SLC’s project would have on the Port Washington community. SLC has sat down with local water districts, environmentalists and community groups in addition to having traffic and school impact studies done to answer Port’s questions.
“A long time ago, this site used to be a sand distribution site,” said Rossi. “Most of the sand under the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center came from here. Port Washington is very prideful of their community so we will put a timeline down over here with names and plaques explaining the contributions involving this site.”
“We’ll have a shuttle bus that will run back and forth to the train and the restaurants,” said Rossi. “And not only is it going to be for our residents but also for the HarborView community, which is our closest single-family home community, over 500 single-family homes. Which helps with traffic big time.”
Long Island Builders Institute Chief Executive Officer Mitchell H. Pally wrote to the town to support the project’s environmental remediation, repurposing the land and economic benefits.

SLC had traffic studies done that included West Shore Road, Beacon Hill Road, Main Street in Port Washington and in Roslyn, Longview Road, Port Washington Boulevard, South Bayles Avenue and ten intersections. The result of the GPS data studies determined the proposed project would generate a minimal amount of peak traffic.Tohelp combat any traffic the proposed development would bring, SLC will provide a shuttle bus for their residents.
When any large project is discussed, the economic impacts often worry residents and lead them to question whether it is worth it for their town to partake in it. SCL is estimating $2 million in permits and fees to the Town of North Hempstead, expenses such as building permits and utility fees. SLC has detailed the anticipated tax revenue impact on the Town of North Hempstead.
Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. will be the first public hearing concerning 145 West Shore Road. According to Councilmember Dalimonte’s weekly newsletter, resident comments can be sent via email planning@northhempsteadny.govto to be put on the record until the public comment period is closed on Oct. 31.
“If the property stays the way it is over the next 20 years, the current tax revenue only produces $1.6-1.7 million,” said Rossi. “If we are able to build what we’re proposing, our tax revenue to the Town of North Hempstead and to the county would be over $28Ofmillion.”theestimated $28 million in taxes to the Town of North Hempstead, $13 million of that goes to the school district.
To accommodate those students, SLC plans to pay $26,000 per student for the first five years and for anyone that enrolls in the school from their address, explained Rossi.“Another thing we plan to do is to give [the school] a million dollar payment only to be used for tablets and smart boards, for the improvement of the way kids learn,” said Rossi.

met with local water districts to understand how the water systems work in a peninsula. The team plans to use a stormwater recapture irrigation system that holds an estimated 10,000 gallons.
“What’s exciting is a company like Southern Land Company is coming in and willing to put money behind a project, help become a steward of the community, clean up this area and doing it in a way that’s being sensitive to the community,” said Johnson.Inaletter to the town from former Town of North Hempstead Councilman Angelo Ferrara, he expressed his support for the project and understanding of the various benefits the project could bring.

“As a resident of the Town of North Hempstead for more than 40 years. I know how truly special our town is, and I know change can be daunting,” wrote Ferrara. “However, when changes are made thoughtfully and have widespread positive impacts, we must be open to them.”

SLC prides itself on its dedication to quality and education. The developers did a few studies with the school through Rutgers and Stony Brook University, and the studies determined that the development could possibly produce 14 students.
Community Support
On the shore of the site, birds enjoy perching on the uneven wood posts protruding from the water and a fish hatchery has formed beneath that area. After meeting with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the team plans on building a section over that area so as not to disturb the fish hatchery. The plans also include leveling the wooden
Southern Land Company is hoping residents will take advantage of the Town of North Hempstead public comment meetings to express questions and concerns that SLC can address.
