Q How is initiativethisgoing?
I’m hopeful that this school year we will continue that process of healing and continue the process of moving together and be reminded of the fact that our kids only go through school once.
On the lessons of the pandemic and the upcoming school year: I think that our kids, teachers and community really need a full return to normalcy throughout the school year. I’m looking forward to the big events that we were able to bring back last year, such as our homecoming festivities, our Frolic, the dances. I think what we learned from the pandemic is how important it is for us to gather. You know, we are social beings and kids really need social connections. We all need social connections. And I think that we have to work as hard as we possibly can to make sure that our kids have as normal of a school year as they possibly can.
Of avoiding a cyber criminal ransomware attack similar to the one in September that involved stolen files and loss of internal email operations, teachers’ class lessons and other disruptions: I am confident that we have strengthened our systems and have implemented the recommendations that were put in
Q Senator SchumerCharleswasat the school last November to pledge federal aid against cyber attacks. Have those funds been released yet and have you made use of them?
A I’m very hopeful for that because I think that kids learn best in person.
A I think that we experienced flashpoints throughout the course of the year that really centered around the district’s autonomy to make decisions for our district and parents’ autonomy to make decisions for their kids. And I think that a frizzo@antonmediagroup.comRIZZOFRANK major driver of [the flashpoints] were the COVID restrictions that were put upon us. And the reason that I think that is is because once we were able to make decisions on our own, for our community and for our district, a lot of those ill feelings, I think, dissipated. And I also think that once we were able to restore the events and restore the experiences and the moments that are so important to our community and to our students, I think the community began to heal simply by coming together.
Dreaming Of A Pre-Pandemic Year
A It’s a month-by-month commitment. However, we anticipate that we would be involved with Northwell for this fiscal year. I told the board that we will provide it with updates in terms of how many kids are using it and what the feedback has been from those families later. I would anticipate giving the board a presentation sometime in November or December regarding this. So far, anecdot ally, we certainly have a number of families see SUPERINTENDENT on page 4 place right after the attack. [We’ve also] implemented best practices in terms of cybersecurity. We had been working to strengthen our infrastructurecybersecuritywellbefore the attack. Criminals are trying to find new ways to penetrate systems, so we’re doing our best to stay ahead of them by implementing all the best practices and procedures. And I certainly think that our position now is stronger than it was at the time of the attack.
A We did not pay the ransom. (Editor’s note: During Schumer’s visit, Passi did admit to the Manhasset Press, “We’re
—SuperintendentGauravPassi
A We have not received federal funds yet. We have been in contact with the federal agency that provides resources to [schools], specifically, recommendations to strengthen our cybersecurity infrastruc ture. And we have been in contact with that agency.
The 2021-22 school year for the Manhasset School District was a big improvement over the previous one, with Superintendent Passi noting that fun gatherings such as the Homecoming Parade, pictured, could take place again. (Manhasset Public Schools) estimating that it will cost about $700,000 for us to both respond for the incident and to fortify our systems moving forward.” The cost was covered by the district’s fund balance.)

Earlier this summer, Dr. Gaurav Passi dropped the “acting” modifier from his superintendent title as the Manhasset School District Board of Education finally made it official. It was the culmination of a career he began in 2003 as a social studies teacher. Subsequently, he served as a dean, and put in more than 11 years as a high school building administrator. Prior to being appointed as acting superintendent last year when Superintendent Vincent Butera went on leave, Passi was appointed as Manhasset’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in July 2019, with responsibilities added for personnel in The2020.Manhasset Press recently spoke with Passi about the 2022-23 school year, which began with a half day of classes for students on Sept. 1 and the first full day on Sept. 2.
Q You never paid the ransom that was demanded by the cyber criminals?
Mental Health Manhasset entered into contracts with the Children’s Medical Center’s Northwell School Mental Partnership initiative. According to Northwell health, “The partnership will help support your school to meet the mental health needs of all students. Our team works closely with the school counselors, psychologists, and social workers to help determine the various needs of students in the district. We also provide access to a dedicated Behavioral Health Center for students in crisis, in need of an evaluation, immediate treatment or connection to care in the community or at the hospital.”
Q There were some disturbing meetings last school year, and you and the board came under attacks by parents and community members for not flouting state regulations and “unmasking their kids.” Is this something you think the community can heal from?
So I’m hopeful that this school year we will continue that process of healing and continue the process of moving together and be reminded of the fact that our kids only go through school once. You know you have one opportunity in third grade for example. And so we want our kids to have the best experience that they possibly can have this year, and that will permeate into the households.

Q The days of hybrid or remote learning are behind you?

• It appears that not much has changed from where we left off in June. So as was the case at the end of the last school year, individuals who are COVID positive need to quarantine for five days and wear a mask for days six through 10.
• Two notable changes from the last school year are that we’re no longer required to report the number of positive cases to the [state Health] Department. I’d also like to discontinue the daily health notifications that we sent home last school year which Manhasset School District COVID Positive Cases 2021-22 record the number of positive cases by school and by grade level. I don’t think that that will be necessary.
• I would also recommend that if an individual on a team or at a club event is COVID positive, that we notify the individuals on the team or on the club.
On Aug. 22, Governor Kathy Hochul announced new COVID-19 guidance for the 2022-23 school year, based on updated CDC guidelines. In a press conference, she said, “The big news is no more quarantining, no more test-to-stay, and the days of sending an entire classroom home because one person was symptomatic or test[ed] positive, those days are over. Now we have two years of experience to know that children are safe in classrooms. And when they’re not in a classroom and the learning stops, the traditional learning stops, it can be devastating for the well-being of those children. We’re seeing it in the mental health challenges we’re facing now. Suicide rates, depression, real mental health issues that were not there before for many of these children. And that is deeply troubling to us.” In an interview, Manhasset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gaurav Passi was asked to assess the COVID-19 policies imposed on the district by the state. His response: “It’s important to remember that what we knew and learned about COVID evolved. So what we did was we kept our practices and policies in line with what was mandated of us by the state Education Department and the Department of Health. And then once we were in the driver’s seat to make our own local decisions about what to do specifically around masks and social distancing and things of that nature, then we used all of the information we had learned about COVID and how it spreads to make those determinations.“Andultimately, what we determined to do was to give families the autonomy to decide whether or not they were going to wear a mask, whether or not their child would sit socially distanced at lunch. So we provided options, because one of the things that we came to realize is that depending on the individuals, depending on the family, they had different levels of risk tolerance that they were willing to take. So some families were very concerned about COVID and we wanted to make sure that their children felt safe in school and we wanted to make sure that their children had options available to them. And so we did that. And we had other families that were not as concerned about COVID. And we wanted to make sure that school was safe for them as well. So that’s why once we had the ability to give families options, we gave them options and then made sure that we had prepared our facilities for students to take advantage of those different available to them.”
To the relief of students, parents, staff and administrators, the days of masking and social distancing seem to be over. In this photo from last December, Middle School Art Club students at Manhasset Secondary School created mini canvas magnets for the Town of North Hempstead’s annual Veterans Donation Drive. (Manhasset Public Schools)

• Districts are not required to quarantine close contacts. Nor are we required to complete contact tracing. However, the New York State Department of Health does recommend that we continue the practice of making classroom-level notifications of potential exposure to a positive case when possible. At the end of the last school year, we sent out classroom-level notifications at the elementary school. I would recommend that we continue to make classroom-level notifications at the elementary level.
SEPTEMBER 7 - 13, 2022 • ANTON MEDIA GROUP4 and I would estimate that the number is about 14 or 15 families that have utilized the Northwell mental health resources available. We’re paying for it through our grants. Enrollment Down?
Source: NYS Department of Health COVID-19 Report Card. As of June 30, 2022 So we had projected that kindergarten at Munsey Park would be at about 114 kids. We’re currently looking at an enrollment of 88 kindergartners. So we’re down about 26 kids from our projection. At Shelter Rock, we are at 58 kindergartners and we had projected us to be at 75. I would just say that the caveat is that kindergarten is the hardest grade for us to predict because it’s the grade that we know the least about. So we do our projections based on a live birth analysis, and that’s how we budget for for kindergarten sections. So in this particular year, it looks like we are under projections for kindergarten at both schools.
Q At the July 28 meeting you were talking about enrollment at the elementary schools, and it seemed like it’s on a downward slope. Is there an enrollment drop in the district? A We have not met our projections for kindergarten enrollment in particular.
COVID-19 Past & Present
• So I know I was grateful when I looked at the new guidance that it does not include any surprises and really reflects a shift towards pre pandemic operations. School Students Teachers Staff Total Middle School 99 0 2 101 Secondary School 168 41 48 257 Munsey Park ES 173 24 28 225 Shelter Rock ES 187 34 23 244 District Totals 627 99 101 827
• The second notable change from last school year is that we’re no longer required to test unvaccinated staff members. That regulation ended at the end of June.
At the Aug. 25 Manhasset School District Board of Education meeting Passi made the following points regarding the recently released guidelines:
• We would not be able to do that same level of notification for the secondary school because of the number of individual students that are impacted. A high school student goes through nine periods a day and would see 25 to 30 students each period, not counting lunch. It just becomes a virtually impossible task to complete.

The “Lance Corporal Matthew A. Falcone Memorial Bridge” will honor the lasting legacy of this incredibly deserving individual in a place where thousands travel every day. Last year, Kaplan and Sillitti sponsored a bill, signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul, to rename the Shelter Rock Ridge Road Bridge in North Hills, which goes over the Northern State Parkway. Kaplan said, “Matt Falcone was an extraordinarily special person whose generosity of spirit was a constant source of inspiration to me and so many others. I will always remember Matt not only for his dedication to his country, his fellow veterans, his family, and his community, but also for his big heart, and his inability to say no when someone needed help. He was a true giant in our community, and I’m honored to share his legacy with everyone by dedicating this bridge in his name that so many of us travel everyJoiningday.”Kaplan and Sillitti at the ceremony will be Town of North Hempstead officials, the family of Matthew Falcone, local veterans and community members. There will also be an honor guard flag presentation and a sign reveal.

Recently, this page celebrated the achievement of Robert Frost in writing a knockout poem, at age 86, for the 1961 presidential inauguration of John F. Kennedy.HenryKissinger, meanwhile, can see and raise the great Frost by 13 good years.
Approaching his centennial, Kissinger is not only on this side of the river, he has also published a new book of his own. Can anyone be surprised? Kissinger’s fame is as a diplomat, but as a young man, he yearned for the literary life. At Harvard, his term papers ran up to 100 pages, forcing that institution to put the brakes on effort that exceeded a certain number. This book, Leadership, is not dictated. The man put pen to paper, scribbling hundreds of pages while assistants apparently did the research and typed the drafts. When Kissinger, in 2015, published World Order, critics could be excused for thinking that it was his swan song. You can’t keep a good man from the writing table.

All six possessed a single-mindended drive: Patriotism, a dash of nationalism, a focus on reviving their respective nation’s economies and a robust effort to instill national pride in the hearts of their countrymen. Such was especially true in the case of both De Gaulle and Thatcher. In 1940, the former took a microphone courtesy of Winston Churchill and announced to the French people that he, Charles De Gaulle, a hitherto unknown general, would henceforth speak for France while defeating the occupiers and regaining France’s glory. De Gaulle was a most grandiose man. It worked. Mind over matter. The man’s sheer willpower worked wonders. The same was true for Thatcher. Inheriting a nation wracked by inflation and workers’ strikes, the preacher’s daughter inaugurated an ambitious privatization program to unshackle the economy; she broke a protracted miner’s strike and expelled Argentine forces from the Falkland Islands even after being

Review of: Leadership: Six Studies in World Strategy. Henry Kissinger BOOK REVIEW

In Their Image: How Leaders Shape History
Kissinger’s fame came from serving President Richard Nixon. And so, Leadership may remind readers of Nixon’s 1982 volume, Leaders. Kissinger’s models are Nixon, Konrad Adenauer, Charles De Gaulle, Lee Kuan Yew, Anwar Sadat and Margaret Thatcher. What characteristics did these leaders share? “[A] factor common to each of the leaders...was a devout religious upbringing---Catholic for Adenauer and De Gaulle, Quaker for Nixon, Sunni Muslim for Sadat and Methodist for Thatcher...They uniformly served certain secular purposes: training in self-control, reflecting on faults and orienting toward the future.”

BOOK REVIEW from page 1A

(The Financial Times) GF234590

Adenauer, by contrast, had the Herculean task of restoring Germany’s good name in the aftermath of World War II. Again, the force of personality won the day. Adenauer was a calm, measured man, someone who laid a reassuring hand on what would remain Europe’s largest economy, Sadat and Nixon made their marks in foreign affairs. The former won a Nobel Prize for making peace with Israel. Sadat was no saint. He launched the 1973 Yom Kippur War on Israel as a way to both regain lost lands and, as important, lost pride for Egypt. Only then was he in a position to make peace. Of these six, Sadat made the greatest personal impact on the author. By making peace with Israel and attempting to modernize certain aspects of Egyptian life, Sadat paid with his life. Kissinger praises him as a man who did not only “express” Nile civilization, he tried also to modify and ennobleRichardit.Nixon had global responsibilities. From 1969 to 1974, Nixon chalked triumph after triumph: Withdrawal from Vietnam, détente with Russia, the opening of China, arms control treaties, laying the groundwork for peace in the Middle East, Kissinger clearly believes that sans Watergate, his old boss would have gone on to be a top tier American president. Other Nixonites, such as Patrick J. Buchanan, feel the same. Leadership is essentially a book containing Plutarchian biographies of the subjects in question. There were real accomplishments. Will they last? Kissinger believes that a great leader puts his mark on his nation long after he is gone. Of the six, Yew was the leader of the smallest country. Singapore makes no global claims. Yew inherited a poor country and made it rich. He let the world’s business leaders know that little Singapore was open for business. It had an industrious workforce and a scenic setting. It worked. In the decades hence, Yew became a national leader whose opinion counted for a great deal on the global stage. He was pro-American even during the Vietnam War. Yew also warned that neighboring China would not be denied. And the world would have to adjust. “This is the biggest player in the history of the world,” the man predicated. Time will tell. There is a vast difference between the world of Egypt and Singapore and the Western democracies. Egypt is a Muslim nation and that religion represents the final word. Yew was repulsed by the Western hedonism of the 1960s. He rejected it out of hand. Yew emphasized that in the Asian world, order comes first, freedom a little later. There can be no freedom without order. The West is different. Freedom is the defining word. Order smacks of authoritarianism.Willtheexamples of Nixon, De Gaulle, Adenauer and Thatcher prevail? Liberal democracies have difficulty with order.
Consider the 2015 migrant crisis which amounted to open borders, urban crime, ongoing terrorism. The Christian morality embraced by Thatcher, Nixon, De Gaulle and Adenauer has been in a frightful decline. Liberal democracies are revolutionary societies. There is no room for conservatism of any sort. Could Nixon recognize today’s Los Angeles? Thatcher with today’s London? De Gaulle and the suburbs of Paris? Adenauer with Frankfurt and Berlin? In a democracy, a political party is more important than a single leader. France has an authentic conservative party. As does Germany. None, however, exists in the United States or Great Britain. Leadership is an astounding achievement. Savor this and other Kissinger volumes, for is not likely to happen again anytime soon. Has America produced a greater patriot than Henry Kissinger? A refugee from 1930s Germany, Kissinger and his family moved to Washington Heights when the man was only 15 years old. “I’ll be back,” he told the German guards. And he was—this time as Secretary of State of the United States. His legacy? Peace and order. Kissinger has long had U.S.-Chinese relations on his mind. The best book of his later years is 2011’s On China. Can a Confucian, communist China and a liberal democracy like America share the planet? Kissinger’s message represents a plea for understanding. Superpowers need to recognize that there are differences among nations and their peoples. One world isn’t possible. Living with those differences, however, is the road to global peace. Henry Kissinger (right), with Margaret Thatcher.

I own a 2018 GMC Terrain. If I find out that my headlight isn’t working, I can bring it to the dealership and it will cost me more than $200 to have it fixed. I can also go to Auto Zone and pick up a headlight bulb for about $50 and spend a few hours sweating and cursing, trying to fix it myself. Or I can simply wait until it gets dark and drive two miles from Massapequa into Amityville. Once across the county line, I can drive up and down Route 110 until I find a Suffolk County police officer and flag them down. As soon as they see I have a dead headlight, they’ll issue me a voucher to have it replaced free of charge, as long as I use a certified repair shop. Which scenario would you choose?During my almost 50 years of driving, I’ve had a handful of times where I was ticketed for a head light or taillight not functioning. I had just 24 hours to repair it and get an officer to verify it or I would have to pay a fine. Of course, I had probably been driving around with one headlight for three months before I got caught, but that’s beside the point. Once they nailed me, I reached into my pocket and got it Thefixed.new program is partially sponsored by “Lights On,” a non-profit company out of Minnesota and began in June 2022. Suffolk County has decided that in stead of having their police officers hand out tickets to drivers with defective headlights or taillights, they will hand out vouchers for free car repairs. Isn’t that special? To start with, this program is being funded by the Federal gov ernment ($20,000) and a private donor. It has been successfully administered in 12 states and is intended to build trust between the police and the public. West Islip philanthropist Steve Castelton stepped up to the plate and do nated $15,000 to the program. The $35,000 will be matched by Lights On, bringing the total start-up fund to $70,000. The vouchers, worth up to $250, can be redeemed at any partici pating auto body shop. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone made the announcement at one of approved, onlyUnfortunately, inauthorizedtheshopsPatchogue.theothershopsofar,is in Setauket. Depending on where you live, it may cost you more in gas to redeem your voucher than to fix it Mostyourself.autorepair shops will make sure they use all of that $250 voucher. A fund that starts with $70,000 will not last too long, with headlight repairs going for $250 a pop. Hurry, hurry, hurry. You’ll need to be one of the first 280 people to get one of those special vouchers before the well runs dry. Bellone said one of the “Safety First Campaign” goals is to de-em phasize minor traffic infractions. Other Suffolk County officials said that the cost of fixing a light bulb would be between $25 and $60. You can barely fill your gas tank for that.

Neither the MTA $8 billion or Queens Link Team $3 billion dollar project cost estimate (based upon respective planning studies) are valid or realistic for reconstruction of the old Long Island Rail Road Rockaway Beach line closed in 1962. Neither study ever completed final design and engineering necessary to validate their cost estimate. These figures would be refined as progress proceeds beyond the planning and environmental phases into final design and engineering efforts. Value engineering, a process that looks at alternative construction methods to reduce costs, would be used during the final design phase. You never know a project’s final cost until completion. History has shown that estimated costs for construction trend upwards as projects advance into more detailed and refined final design and engineering. Progression refines the detailed scope of work necessary to support construction. Actual costs become more accurate by award of construction contracts. They are followed by change orders to the base contracts during the course of construction, due to unforeseen site conditions or last-minute changes in scope. This will be followed by beneficial use, completion of inspection and acceptance for all work, including thousands of contract punch list items insuring conformation for adherence to contract specifications, receipt of asset maintenance manuals for all project components, followed by release of retain age and final payment to the contractor(s). More is needed besides lobbying Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams for funding to pay for a future environmental review under the federal National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). This task could cost millions of dollars. MTA Chairman Janno Lieber and LIRR President Catherine Renaldi must be convinced to serve as project sponsor. Hochul and Adams need to instruct their respective MTA Board members to request the same. The MTA and LIRR need to obtain permission from the Federal Transit Administration to enter this project under the FTA national competitive discretionary Capital Investment Grants (CIG) New Starts Core Capacity Grant program. This is the same program that funded MTA’s $11.2 billion LIRR East Side Access to Grand Central Terminal (now known as Grand Central Madison) and NYC Transit $4.5 billion Second Avenue Subway Phase 1. Financing construction for restoration of LIRR service on the old Rockaway Beach branch would require a FTA Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA). The total project, be it $3, $8 billion, or more would require the MTA providing between 50% to 66% local share necessary to leverage the balance of federal dollars. It averages five or more years from admission into the FTA CIG program before a transit agency successfully completes the process and obtains federal funding under a FFGA grant. The scope of work agreed upon under the FFGA would include construction of tracks, third rail, interlockings, sidings, signals, pow er substations, stations including elevators to assure they meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) access requirements, commuter parking, bike racks, purchase of additional electric MU rail cars for service and modifications to existing or construction of new rail yards for maintenance and storage of equipment. A financial plan would have to be developed. This could include identifying local match against FTA capital grants to support advancement of the proj ect. The MTA would also have to ensure that they have adequate local operating dollars to cover farebox revenue shortfalls. Riders only pay for a portion of the cost for any trip. The MTA would also need to have the resources to maintain all the capital investments financed by the FTA. All federally funded capital project investments have useful life requirements. They are usually based on industry standards You need the same frequent enthusiastic support for years that Senator Chuck Schumer has shown on behalf of the $33 billion Gateway Tunnel and $6.9 billion Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 projects. He has yet to do the same for this project.

The State Department of Transportation is the federally sponsored planning orga nization, known locally as the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC). They produce a Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) which is part of the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The MTA must request that this project be added to both the TIP and STIP. The project needs to be included within the NYMTC Five-Year Short Range and 20-Year Long Range Plan for capital trans portation projects. The project also needs to be added to the MTA current $51 billion 2020-24, upcoming 2025-29 and 2030-34 Five-Year Capital Plans, along with the MTA 2020-40 20-Year Capital Needs Plan. All of these actions are also needed if you have any hope of boarding the first train by 2040 at the earliest. It will easily require 15 to 20 years from start to finish for successful completion. This is based on my prior first-hand work experience at FTA working with both the MTA and NJ Transit on similar projects for several decades.

Getting Up On Her How Stand For Myself became Stories abound of how musicians navigated the full-stop nature of the pandemic. For English singer-songwriter Yola, the extended COVID-19 pause gave her a chance to do a deep dive into herself with Stand For Myself , the follow-up to her critically-acclaimed 2019 debut Walk Through Fire . The woman born Yolanda Claire Quartey has expanded the stylistic palette considerably more with this collection of songs. Yola’s reunion with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys producing finds the sounds of Yola’s childhood bubbling up and encompassing everything from hooky protest jams (“Diamond Studded Shoes”) and Bacharach-flavored pop (“Like a Photograph”) to Gamble & Huff-flavored disco (“Dancing Away in Tears”) and silk sheet R&B (“Now You’re Here”). In the process, Yola did self inventory in the aftermath of trying to hold onto her center, while weathering a tsunami of success.

“I feel like with the first record, I was so surrounded by white men,” Yola explained. “It was my connections with women of varying backgrounds/, hue and persuasion that gave me this wonderful ability to truly excavate everything I needed to [dig up] on this record. I was blessed to have a clutch of women that would get me there fully understanding where I was trying to go. Then I had to call Brandi—she’s obviously on the opposite end of the country up in Seattle. I told her she could send me a vocal and she was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m all over it.’ She was even telling me, ‘You know I’m going to be on this record, right?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I do.’”

“It felt like the arc of my journey from being a little of a dual-mapped person, to seeming like I was on my path properly felt like the inspiration to the arc of this record. A moment where life had realized some sense of timing. I negotiated how to get that for myself and how to have control over my own life—not anyone else’s—just mine. It was quite astounding how often I was in situations where people wanted to have control over my life and they didn’t even realize t hey were doing that. Every song was like a stop on the way to that.”

A major factor allowing Yola to find the greater truth she was seeking on this project was the presence and contributions of a very female-centric supporting cast. Among the major contributors were less-familiar talents like Joy Oladokun and Ruby Amanfu and better-known names like Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby.
“It became apparent during lockdown when I was adding songs to my coffer of tunes, that I was writing about something,” she recalled.

The Carlile and Hemby connection came via Yola being invited to contribute to the Highwomen, the 2019 all-female supergroup the aforementioned duo are in, alongside Maren Morris and Amanda Shires. Hemby caught Yola playing at Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion Festival, professed

Stand For Myself’s release, Yola is eager to share the entirety of her new material now that pandemic numbers are plunging and venues are opening, Anchored by the rhythm section of bassist Nick Movshon (Sharon Jones; Amy Winehouse) and drummer Aaron Frazer (Durand Jones and the Indications), Yola promises both substance and sizzle with this tour. “I knew this record needed a rhythm section steeped in disco and funk,” she said. “Feel in the pocket was paramount to the drum sections we had. We’ve been opening for Chris Stapleton doing short sets, so finally we get the full fat arrangement, delivery and everything. I learned about how I connect to this record and what is coming to the fore in these live performances. It’s also an opportunity to present these topics that can be taken on either a surface or deeper level and meeting people where they’re at.” Visit www.longislandweekly.com to read a longer version of this story.
Yola’s personal deep dive her love of the latter’s debut and insisted she was going to hip Carlile to the British vocal powerhouse. The Highwomen project followed and, in its wake, doors of opportunity continued opening for Yola. “When I flew over to RCA Studio A in Nashville, I became fast friends with Brandi,” Yola said. “She said to bring a song and this was what they were thinking of doing. It became the connector to so many things. I met Brandi along with Natalie Hemby, who writes on five out of the 12 songs on my current record. I met Maren [Morris] and Amanda [Shires] there. I met Dave Cobb there. Obviously, I’ve been on the road with Dave and Chris Stapleton as well, so we got to see quite a lot of each other. [Dave] was doing the soundtrack to this movie [about Elvis Presley] and we had already connected. He’d seen how I worked in the studio and thought I would really smash this so he suggested I audition with everybody else [for a role] and I got the call-back. Everything seemed to kind of spring off my friendship with Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby.” As if a year full of touring dates isn’t enough, the film Yola was referencing is Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming Elvis biopic, in which Yola will be entireWithoutbutforpeople.aboutaandsomeOtislikerougher-edgedfitsparticularlyapioneergospel-star-turned-rock-and-rollplayingSisterRosettaTharpe.It’sroleYolaisthrilledtobeplaying,givenhowTharpe’ssoundalongsidethe30-something’schildhoodinfluencesMavisStaples,TinaTurnerandRedding.“Withthisrole,Igettoredressoftheinconsistenciesinrockroll’setymology,”Yolasaid.“It’sgreatprivilegetobeabletotalkthatandbringittotheforeforIknowI’mthejump-offpointElvis,asacharacterinthemovie,withoutme,youdon’thavehim.him,youdon’thavethescene.”Havingplayedasolebriefsetsince

CANCER (June 22-July 22). It always takes more than one person to create a power struggle. One way to end the back-and-forth of a psychological tug-of-war game is simply to let go of the rope. e other person may go reeling backward, but if you don’t pick it up again, you’re free of the arduous game, which may be even better than winning.
South’s four-heart bid indicated the ace of hearts, and North’s five dia monds showed the king in the suit his partner had bid earlier. South replied in kind with five spades, identifying possession of the king, and North, delighted as the last piece fell into place, jumped to seven clubs, which was easily made. It is interesting to note that nei ther player resorted to Blackwood at any stage. The four aces were located by inference, and the absence of one king — an unim portant one — did not stop the Sharples from reaching the grand slam with only 33 high-card points.

However, South did not know where the slam would play best or whether a grand slam might be possible. He therefore bid three diamonds, showing his second suit while at the same time identifying clubs as his longer suit, since he had bid them first. North then showed club support by bidding four clubs, which established clubs as trump. From this point on, first- and sec ond-round controls were shown.

According to Iaquinta, Cargiulo was invited to the elite Long Island Quarterback Challenge at Kings Park HS. It was a grueling four-hour competition overseen by former NFL quarterback Matt Simms, son of NFL legend and Giants QB Phil. Iaquinta called Cargiulo “one of the better quarterbacks on Long Island.” and hopes to see him add improved passing accuracy to his proven running abilities. Cargiulo also worked with Jay Fiedler, the 10-year NFL quarterback, who holds camps and clinics on Long Island.

He has volunteered at the tennis complex for about 20 years, he told the Manhasset Press. One minute he’s exclaiming over an opening day match between obscure play ers on one of the many courts dispersed around the Flushing site. Another he’s giving directions to one of the multitude of tennis fans flooding the complex. Another time he interrupted the conversation briefly to hand a gift to a child.

The top seed is defending Long Island Class III champ Plainedge, followed by Bethpage and Carey. The latter, according to Iaquinta, dropped from Conference II and “is a perennial power. Those three are the teams to Lastbeat.”year, the Indians finished 2-6 overall and 2-4 in Conference III. In the spring of 2021, when the 2020 season was played because of the pandemic, the Indians went undefeated and won the Rutgers Cup as Nassau’s best football team, garnering the Nassau Conference III title. The Long Island championship game was not held that campaign.“Thebiggest thing is we have to stay healthy because our numbers are very low—we have 24 players and four of them are sophomores,” Iaquinta summed up. “Three sophs are starting on the offensive line, so they have to grow up very quickly. And if we stay healthy and grow up quickly we’ll be right there. I don’t know if we can [compete] with the top three, but we can play with everybody else, because we have some pretty good kids back on defense and two of the best in the county in Cargiulo and Mulholland. If the sophs grow up, we’ll be better than average.” Once again assisting Iaquinta will be Mike Lewis, Cris Wagner and Arthur Johnson.

Massive sporting events such as the U.S. Open would not work without an army of volunteers to help oil the many gears of the the complicated operations. When reached by the Press, Klainberg was in the company of tennis enthusiasts from Manhasset and was kept busy by Arthur Ashe Kids Day, comprising what he called “a number of fun-filled and interactive games for everyone and a super carni val-like experience.” In addition, Klainberg and his charges also “provide historical information about the USTA (United States Tennis Association) and keep the kids busy and having fun and then give them some interest in the game.” he“Thesaid.other thing that we do, probably more than anything else, is answer gen eral questions. Where’s the bathroom? Where’s the best match? Where’s the Louis Armstrong stadium? Where’s the grand stand?” Klainberg noted. Tennis has been a lifelong sport for Klainberg. He recalls participating as a youth at the now-shuttered Village Bath Club, part of the Manhasset Country Club. Unlike many who competed in high school, he still plays the court game as he nears 60. T he Rene Ruiz Collection is now available at its new Manhasset location, joining stores in Boca Raton and Hallandale, FL. The Manhasset Press interviewed Rene Ruiz CEO Brad Rosenblatt. Excerpts:

Q Who are customers?your
A Though open only since June, I’m pleased to say we already have waiting lists for client appointments for their special occasions. Additionally, our National Sales Director Dan Simon, who has been with the company going on two decades, moved to New York to supervise the opening of the store and the training of staff. Having a trusted employee who has known our business and clientele so long made the opening all the easier. He has done hundreds of trunk shows worldwide.

CEO Statement “The Rene Ruiz Collection strikes a balance between old-world craftsman ship and modern glamour by blending Miami’s sultry sexiness with graceful elegance. Our designs succeed in fusing the region’s beauty and diversity inspir ing the international social set from Los Angeles to Palm Beach and Zurich to SOntario.“[The]designs fill a void in the luxury market with a collection that reflects our standard for quality, but also a city and culture that are gaining momentum as the next international fashion capital. In blending the brand’s inspirations with Miami’s rich cultural heritage in our artistry, Rene Ruiz designs are also known for their own fabrics, accentuating the meticulous detailing which inspires sensuality for the modern woman.

The Ruiz Brand Comes To Manhasset
A I moved to Miami and had my first taste of the fashion world while working multiple day jobs with my father and side gigs for a fashion and lifestyle publisher. In the years that followed, I took a full-time role at an international magazine and quickly became close with a local designer, Rene Ruiz. A personal relationship between the two of us formed by 2000 and shortly thereafter I became deeply involved in Rene Ruiz’s formalwear line and eventually took ownership of the brand in 2009. After taking ownership and working with Ruiz’s right hand, Luis Escudero, who I eventually promoted to Creative Director in 2017 with Ruiz’s departure. Together we have grown what was once a local Florida brand to an international fashion brand. The store is located at 1695 Northern Blvd., Manhasset. Call 516-570-0269. The collection is also available at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. Launching in September will be www. ReneRuizCollection.com and the Rene Ruiz Collection store on Amazon.

Q Make a pitch—why should women shop at Rene Ruiz? How does your evening wear stand out from the competition?

Q Why did you choose to locate in Manhasset?
A We chose Manhasset because it is situated close enough to all the shores and the city. Also, being across the street from one of the most successful highend retail destinations in New York, the Americana Manhasset, made the choice of “where” extremely easy. Creating and curating relationships with women in key demographics for us within our own stores has always been on the drawing board as a company. With the overlap of snowbirds from New York to South Florida, Long Island was a no-brainer for a choice for our first location outside of Florida, as a great deal of clients already knew of us and getting the word out was easy.
A Our eye for high-quality fabrics and personalized attention to the creation and tailoring of each garment help set us apart from the competition. Truth be told, whether a woman chooses to make a custom Rene Ruiz Collection dress or purchase one off the racks, with each design she gets the experience of an entire team that has 30-plus years experience not just selling dresses that other designers make and altering them, but actually creating them and that makes all the difference in the world. The business began making custom dresses for women and slowly expanded to an international design house known not only for its custom designs, but elegant and whimsical off-the-rack evening wear, cocktail dresses, separates, shapewear and accessories.
Q How did you come to be associated with Rene Ruiz?

It was a murder that could have easily been prevented if Kyra’s safety had been prioritized during her child custody case. And unfortunately, Kyra is not alone. She is one of 20 children in New York State that was murdered by a parent during a custody case, separation or divorce since 2016.

“I was told repeatedly during Kyra’s custody case, ‘just because he abused you, doesn’t mean he’ll abuse Kyra,’” Franchetti said. “Well, that’s ridiculous. We know that

Franchetti was joined by members of the Kyra’s Champions Student Advocacy Program; Shayna Blumenfeld, Anjali Anand and Caroline Brock; sponsors of Kyra’s Law State Sen. Anna Kaplan, Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi, Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz, and State Sen. Anthony Palumbo; Jennifer Friedman of Sanctuary for Families; and Josh Hanson of The Safe Center LI. “Student advocates played an incredible role at the rally,” Franchetti said. “They were introducing each speaker and they had learned so much about child abuse and child abuse prevention. Kyra’s Champions is an organization that is for kids by kids. And it’s for students and by students. After all, they should have a say on how their life will be impacted or how their friends’ lives will be impacted.”Thatsame day, Franchetti testified before the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, asking Gov. Kathy Hochul to include Kyra’s Law in her State of the State “Thereaddress.wereanumber of wonderful, wonderful domestic violence groups and advocates who were invited to speak and I was one of them in Manhattan,” Franchetti said. “I talked about the dire need for Kyra’s Law to be part of the governor’s legislative agenda.”Asofright now, Kyra’s Law has received one third of the New York State Senate’s support and half of the New York State Assembly’s support. It’s a set of laws that have gained multi-partisan support. “What happened to Kyra Franchetti should have never happened, and it should never happen to any child ever again,” said Sen. Kaplan, the senate sponsor of the bill. “Kyra’s Law will ensure that children involved in cus tody cases are protected, and that their safety is centered and prioritized, and that’s why I’m proud to be its sponsor, and will continue to work diligently towards its successful enactment. I’m so grateful for the relent less activism and advocacy of Jacqueline Franchetti, whose efforts on behalf of child safety are an inspiration to us all, and I’m proud to partner with her to get this vital legislation passed to protect our kids.” It is likely Kyra’s Law will be put before the State Senate and Assembly when the Legislative Session opens in January. The set of laws passed in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but time ran out in the session and it has yet to be seen by the Senate and Assembly.
Kyra’s Law’s Components allowed to appear as expert witnesses against the parent who sought the evalua tor’s removal.

“Kyra’s Law is common-sense legislation that will protect innocent and vulnerable children from abusive parents in child custody cases,” said Franchetti. “Kyra’s Law does three critical things. Number one, it will make child safety the top priority in a child custody case. Again, common sense. But not happening in reality. Two, it will mandate judge training to ensure judges are properly skilled and trained in family violence and child abuse and trauma. And third, it will stop common practices that allow abusers to gain custody at staggering rates.”
“It was on the anniversary that I was forced to say my last goodbye to Kyra,” Franchetti. “I miss her every single second of every single day. And knowing that nothing’s changed in New York State to protect a child, it makes me shake my head. I don’t understand why more hasn’t been done knowing how often this happens and that this is entirely preventable.”Onthemorning of that rally, it was pouring rain. Franchetti, in her rain gear, was setting up for the rally. “It was so wonderful to see how many people showed up... in support of Kyra, in support of our efforts to bring about chang es,” Franchetti said. “It really highlights how many people are behind this, how many politicians are behind this. People want to see this become a reality. It gave me encour agement and hope because we have these incredible bills that are well vetted, that are well-designed to protect children.”
