Today, what is now Wheatley Farms has undergone its first phase of renovations, and soon will host opportunities for courses in animal welfare, hydroponics and harvesting, along with arts and mixed media. Volunteers will be central to the offerings at Wheatley Farms, and a simple community-based advisory board will use their expertise to shape the opportunities and community that Wheatley Farms will have to offer. But programs at Wheatley Farms are not just open to those involved with AHRC Nas sau, it is open for the community. Community members will be able to enjoy programs like Yoga on the Lawn, Horseback Riding, Pod casting, Farm to Table Cooking and Pottery. Future plans for the property include a full renovation of the Farmhouse, which will include a mixed-media room and a yoga and dance studio.

“This is how our agency started and how we’re planning to move forward,” Perry said. “The founding family of AHRC Nassau made this property their home in 1958 so that their children could learn, grow and thrive.”

ANTON MEDIA GROUP • SEPTEMBER 7 - 13, 2022 3 TOP STORY AHRC

F our years ago, during a life-planning meeting with staff from AHRC Nassau, an organization that supports people with developmental disabilities, MaryAnn Dellova was discussing what her daughter, Jennifer, needed; a welcoming place where she could connect with plants and animals, explore her interests, meet new people and build a community. And four years later, this vision would become a reality through the opening of the Thomas S. Gulotta Wheatley Farms & Arts Center, which is located right next to AHRC’s Brookville Campus.

There are also buildings on-site that will host various programs for people of all abilities, such as art classes. And on the property there will be a community duck pond and Zen Garden that will be available for everyone to use. Farm animals also live on the property, such as goats and a pig, Visit www.ahrc.org/wheatleyfarms to learn more about the Thomas S. Gulotta Wheatley Farms & Arts Center.

AHRC Nassau created a warm welcome for the center through a ribbon cutting that took place on Aug. 25. Supporters and those involved with AHRC Nassau learned about the process of opening Wheatley Farms, as well as what it will bring to the community, before the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Afterwards, those who came to the event were treated to a tour of the property.

Another dream among the team at AHRC Nassau was to find a special way to remember the late, former Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta. The center has been dedicated to him.

“Those of you who knew my father closely knew he always joked about his name proudly displayed indefinitely...,” Christopher said. “I’m sure he would be extremely happy... We know Tom truly believed in the mission of the AHRC Nassau organization and he wanted to do everything he could to help in any way possible, including being in office and the board of directors [for AHRC Nassau]. We all know that he will always be proud to be part of the AHRC family.” After the ribbon cutting, volunteers brought attendees of the event on a tour around the property to learn about what the Thomas S. Gulotta Wheatley Farms & Arts Center had to offer. In the greenhouse, there is a hydroponics tower, which allows for the growing of plants with water instead of soil. Next to the green house there is a garden. Food and flowers will be plenty on the property. Much of that food will be donated to local food pantries, and the greenhouse will also be selling produce baskets and centerpieces. People who utilize AHRC’s programs are welcome to grow their skills in gardening as they help maintain the garden and greenhouse with volunteers.

“For the next 15 years, Tom would serve as a member of the AHRC Foundation Board,” Gumerove said. “He had perfect attendance and was always ready to help.” Gulotta was the reason AHRC Nassau was able to acquire a generator, at a time that those were sold out at pretty much all stores, after Hurricane Sandy. Getting a generator enabled the medically fragile clients of AHRC to stay safe and receive care they needed during the power outages.

As the president of the AHRC Nassau Board of Directors, the mother of a developmentally disabled child, a longtime volunteer and an attorney who specializes in special needs, Sandra M. Gumerove knows how important it is to create opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.

Nassau Opens Farm And Arts Center For The Community

“We heard her,” AHRC Nassau CEO Stan fort J. Perry said. “And we also found that she was far from alone. This insight led us along an entirely new path in development oppor tunities for learning and job training.”

“Tom’s character and integrity were embedded in every attraction in our or ganization in the course of his 25 years in public service,” Gumerove said. “His time as Nassau County executive from 1987 to 2001 coincided with... unprecedented growth for ourAndagency.”hisservice expanded beyond his time in office. He had reached out to AHRC Nas sau to see if there was a place he could help.

Gulota’s son, Christopher, spoke to the crowd after Gumerove invited him up.

(Photos by Jennifer Corr)

The history of AHRC centers on meeting the evolving needs of people with developmental disabilities and their families,” Gumerove said. “It’s a history that promotes equity, access and inclusion. That’s the promise of this center. And I’ll tell you what my dream is. My dream is that we meet the promise of equity, access and inclusion and that we can all walk down the street with each other and nobody notices.”

“These spaces will lead to the discovery of new interests, lively hidden talents...,” Perry said. “Wheatley Farms and Arts Center will offer meaningful employment and job training opportunities. The center will employ people with and without disabilities in the running of the farm. People will be supported to be successful in acquiring marketable skills and pursuing competitive employment on Long Island.”

The vision of Wheatley Farms is a place where people of all abilities could come together and be included and accepted.

Guo: On a family vacation trip to China to visit family, I came across what was called a wellness institute. It’s really both a refuge and school for orphans and abandoned children, and I saw that many of the staff members—teachers, social workers—were foreigners. They weren’t Chinese. They were Americans or British people from the UK or Europeans. And, so they were adults taking care of children and I was 9-years-

After talking to them, I met with the administrator there and expressed my intention to come back with toys and candy and other snacks, foods, story books and games and educational supplies for the kids. So I came back. The first donation was with family and friends and relatives. It went so well and we did not have enough for everyone. So, I went back there again and I asked my parents at the time if we could get more people involved, like local businesses. So the second time was with more community members and businesses.

I’ve learned that young people have a voice and their actions can create significant impact and even movements.spread —Sabrina Guo

Guo: There are many things that inspire me. One of them would be Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative. She helped over 60 million girls all over the world. And I always remember this quote that she said which is; ‘Every girl, no matter where she lives, deserves the opportunity to develop the promise inside of her.’ And that’s something I hold very closely to my heart through all the work that I do...

Syosset Jericho Tribune: How do you balance the responsibility of being a student and an activist? Guo: It’s a lot of prioritizing and time management and really knowing how to delegate responsibilities to fellow key mem bers at Girl Pride International and LILAC, and my parents who I have essentially made my secretaries. Thankfully I’ve seen a lot of support, not just from members and leaders from these two organizations, but also from school administrators and teachers and elected officials and community leaders who have provided resources and guidance and really help us to be the best version of ourselves. Visit www.girlpride.org to learn more about Sabrina Guo and her work.

Syosset Jericho Tribune: I’m sure you won’t stop here. What are your future goals? Guo: We will continue to fight against gun violence. I co-organized a March for Our Lives rally in Long Island earlier this summer in front of the Supreme Court and Legislature where more than 500 people showed up, including a lot of speakers and elected officials. Another item is in light of overturning Roe V. Wade, women repro ductive health has been severely attacked. And so I am engaging with lawmakers to protect reproductive rights at the federal and local level by writing letters and other forms of advocacy. However, I want to share that I am conducting research to the extent of what social and economic factors, such as race, religion, education and more affect emergency contraceptive access. That’s my current research project and I plan to share my findings with the public and especially with lawmakers and policy makers... Another is to continue combating all forms of hate and prejudice, particularly against the anti-Asian hate crimes... And also to advocate for gender equality and equal pay and for the U.S. to take on the leadership to fight climate change. I proposed and helped to draft a county resolution to memorialize Marie Colvin’s legacy by naming a local street in her name. She was a war correspon dent [who grew up in East Norwich]. She died in the front lines in Syria... I’m also working with the County Legislature to commission a Nassau County Youth Poet Laureate program... Another piece of news is I am going to debut a poetry book called Catalog Of Ripening that’s going to be published around Sept. 9.

old at the time. I was really curious. I had conversations with them. I asked questions like ‘Why were the children in this situation? And what guided you to help them?’

No endeavor is too big for Sabrina Guo of Oyster Bay Cove. Entering into her senior year at Syosset High School, Guo has already made positive changes in the community and beyond.Atthe height of the pandemic in March 2020, Guo, 14-years-old at the time, founded a student run organization called Long Island Laboring Against COVID-19 (LILAC) that received recognition from President Joseph Biden through the Presidential Gold Volunteer Service Award. The organization provided healthcare workers with Personal Protective Equipment, which was hard to find at the time, meals and funds. LILAC also supported healthcare workers by inspiring them with art created by students and it combated all forms of hate and discrimination such as the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes and violence due to COVID-19. But her activism did not start there. Among her many projects and initiatives, in 2018, Guo founded Girl Pride International, a nonprofit that focuses on supporting displaced, refugee, and migrant girls’ with intellectual material and meeting social needs and connecting with other grassroots organizations in Long Island, New Orleans, Kenya, Jordan and Central America. The Syosset Jericho Tribune connected with Guo to discuss her current activism and how she balances the responsibilities of a high school student with her many projects and goals.

Syosset Jericho Tribune: What inspired you to get involved with activism and volunteerism?

Syosset Jericho Tribune: What was the first act of kindness that you did for the community?

Syosset Jericho Tribune: You were very involved in assisting health care workers with getting PPE during the pandemic, as well as supporting health care workers with work of art done by you and your friends. What have you learned from that experience? Would you say it inspired you to do even more? Guo: I’ve learned that young people have a voice and their actions can create significant impact and even spread movements. Young people not only have a voice but no matter how small their action is, they can make a difference. I started [LILAC] with just my family and close friends, and then we expanded to over 150 members and over 100 organizations and community leaders partnered with us. I think once you take that first step it’s only a matter of time before others join you in the movement. And that’s the power of our generation and the youth who are living in such a polarized time. Through that, we’ve gotten involved in so many more movements. For example, empowering girls in Kenya and working closely with our Girl Pride International Samburu chapter [Samburu is a region in Kenya]. We’re helping the children there have more access to education and providing resources. We’re actually nearing the completion of building a brand new solar paneled, WiFi-enabled classroom that will accommodate 80 students that are currently in first or second grade and have never had their own classroom.

Syosset Jericho Tribune: You’ve been helping underprivileged girls all around the world. What is the logistics of your organization, Girl Pride International? Guo: Girl Pride International has different committees and project groups that all serve a different function. We have a fundraising committee, creative works committee. We also have a crossing borders pen pal program that’s primarily run by me because it’s four-years-old. It was our very first initiative that connected U.S. students to Syrian refugee artists. We also have the social media and tech committee that’s overseen by our chief financial officer. And he is a graduate school student at NYU. We also have an advisory board that’s made up of a dozen college med school and graduate school students from different fields and different expertise. We also have adults that sit on our board of directors that include CEOs and founders of other social enterprises.

Approaching his centennial, Kissinger is not only on this side of the river, he has also published a new book of his own. Can anyone be surprised? Kissinger’s fame is as a diplomat, but as a young man, he yearned for the literary life. At Harvard, his term papers ran up to 100 pages, forcing that institution to put the brakes on effort that exceeded a certain number. This book, Leadership, is not dictated. The man put pen to paper, scribbling hundreds of pages while assistants apparently did the research and typed the drafts. When Kissinger, in 2015, published World Order, critics could be excused for thinking that it was his swan song. You can’t keep a good man from the writing table.

Recently, this page celebrated the achievement of Robert Frost in writing a knockout poem, at age 86, for the 1961 presidential inauguration of John F. Kennedy.HenryKissinger, meanwhile, can see and raise the great Frost by 13 good years.

Kissinger’s fame came from serving President Richard Nixon. And so, Leadership may remind readers of Nixon’s 1982 volume, Leaders. Kissinger’s models are Nixon, Konrad Adenauer, Charles De Gaulle, Lee Kuan Yew, Anwar Sadat and Margaret Thatcher. What characteristics did these leaders share? “[A] factor common to each of the leaders...was a devout religious upbringing---Catholic for Adenauer and De Gaulle, Quaker for Nixon, Sunni Muslim for Sadat and Methodist for Thatcher...They uniformly served certain secular purposes: training in self-control, reflecting on faults and orienting toward the future.”

Partnering In Action Change For Tomorrow

All six possessed a single-mindended drive: Patriotism, a dash of nationalism, a focus on reviving their respective nation’s economies and a robust effort to instill national pride in the hearts of their countrymen. Such was especially true in the case of both De Gaulle and Thatcher. In 1940, the former took a microphone courtesy of Winston Churchill and announced to the French people that he, Charles De Gaulle, a hitherto unknown general, would henceforth speak for France while defeating the occupiers and regaining France’s glory. De Gaulle was a most grandiose man. It worked. Mind over matter. The man’s sheer willpower worked wonders. The same was true for Thatcher. Inheriting a nation wracked by inflation and workers’ strikes, the preacher’s daughter inaugurated an ambitious privatization program to unshackle the economy; she broke a protracted miner’s strike and expelled Argentine forces from the Falkland Islands even after being

Review of: Leadership: Six Studies in World Strategy. Henry Kissinger BOOK REVIEW

(The Financial Times) GF234590

Consider the 2015 migrant crisis which amounted to open borders, urban crime, ongoing terrorism. The Christian morality embraced by Thatcher, Nixon, De Gaulle and Adenauer has been in a frightful decline. Liberal democracies are revolutionary societies. There is no room for conservatism of any sort. Could Nixon recognize today’s Los Angeles? Thatcher with today’s London? De Gaulle and the suburbs of Paris? Adenauer with Frankfurt and Berlin? In a democracy, a political party is more important than a single leader. France has an authentic conservative party. As does Germany. None, however, exists in the United States or Great Britain. Leadership is an astounding achievement. Savor this and other Kissinger volumes, for is not likely to happen again anytime soon. Has America produced a greater patriot than Henry Kissinger? A refugee from 1930s Germany, Kissinger and his family moved to Washington Heights when the man was only 15 years old. “I’ll be back,” he told the German guards. And he was—this time as Secretary of State of the United States. His legacy? Peace and order. Kissinger has long had U.S.-Chinese relations on his mind. The best book of his later years is 2011’s On China. Can a Confucian, communist China and a liberal democracy like America share the planet? Kissinger’s message represents a plea for understanding. Superpowers need to recognize that there are differences among nations and their peoples. One world isn’t possible. Living with those differences, however, is the road to global peace. Henry Kissinger (right), with Margaret Thatcher.

Adenauer, by contrast, had the Herculean task of restoring Germany’s good name in the aftermath of World War II. Again, the force of personality won the day. Adenauer was a calm, measured man, someone who laid a reassuring hand on what would remain Europe’s largest economy, Sadat and Nixon made their marks in foreign affairs. The former won a Nobel Prize for making peace with Israel. Sadat was no saint. He launched the 1973 Yom Kippur War on Israel as a way to both regain lost lands and, as important, lost pride for Egypt. Only then was he in a position to make peace. Of these six, Sadat made the greatest personal impact on the author. By making peace with Israel and attempting to modernize certain aspects of Egyptian life, Sadat paid with his life. Kissinger praises him as a man who did not only “express” Nile civilization, he tried also to modify and ennobleRichardit.Nixon had global responsibilities. From 1969 to 1974, Nixon chalked triumph after triumph: Withdrawal from Vietnam, détente with Russia, the opening of China, arms control treaties, laying the groundwork for peace in the Middle East, Kissinger clearly believes that sans Watergate, his old boss would have gone on to be a top tier American president. Other Nixonites, such as Patrick J. Buchanan, feel the same. Leadership is essentially a book containing Plutarchian biographies of the subjects in question. There were real accomplishments. Will they last? Kissinger believes that a great leader puts his mark on his nation long after he is gone. Of the six, Yew was the leader of the smallest country. Singapore makes no global claims. Yew inherited a poor country and made it rich. He let the world’s business leaders know that little Singapore was open for business. It had an industrious workforce and a scenic setting. It worked. In the decades hence, Yew became a national leader whose opinion counted for a great deal on the global stage. He was pro-American even during the Vietnam War. Yew also warned that neighboring China would not be denied. And the world would have to adjust. “This is the biggest player in the history of the world,” the man predicated. Time will tell. There is a vast difference between the world of Egypt and Singapore and the Western democracies. Egypt is a Muslim nation and that religion represents the final word. Yew was repulsed by the Western hedonism of the 1960s. He rejected it out of hand. Yew emphasized that in the Asian world, order comes first, freedom a little later. There can be no freedom without order. The West is different. Freedom is the defining word. Order smacks of authoritarianism.Willtheexamples of Nixon, De Gaulle, Adenauer and Thatcher prevail? Liberal democracies have difficulty with order.

Lighting The Way In Suffolk County

Neither the MTA $8 billion or Queens Link Team $3 billion dollar project cost estimate (based upon respective planning studies) are valid or realistic for reconstruction of the old Long Island Rail Road Rockaway Beach line closed in 1962. Neither study ever completed final design and engineering necessary to validate their cost estimate. These figures would be refined as progress proceeds beyond the planning and environmental phases into final design and engineering efforts. Value engineering, a process that looks at alternative construction methods to reduce costs, would be used during the final design phase. You never know a project’s final cost until completion. History has shown that estimated costs for construction trend upwards as projects advance into more detailed and refined final design and engineering. Progression refines the detailed scope of work necessary to support construction. Actual costs become more accurate by award of construction contracts. They are followed by change orders to the base contracts during the course of construction, due to unforeseen site conditions or last-minute changes in scope. This will be followed by beneficial use, completion of inspection and acceptance for all work, including thousands of contract punch list items insuring conformation for adherence to contract specifications, receipt of asset maintenance manuals for all project components, followed by release of retain age and final payment to the contractor(s). More is needed besides lobbying Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams for funding to pay for a future environmental review under the federal National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). This task could cost millions of dollars. MTA Chairman Janno Lieber and LIRR President Catherine Renaldi must be convinced to serve as project sponsor. Hochul and Adams need to instruct their respective MTA Board members to request the same. The MTA and LIRR need to obtain permission from the Federal Transit Administration to enter this project under the FTA national competitive discretionary Capital Investment Grants (CIG) New Starts Core Capacity Grant program. This is the same program that funded MTA’s $11.2 billion LIRR East Side Access to Grand Central Terminal (now known as Grand Central Madison) and NYC Transit $4.5 billion Second Avenue Subway Phase 1. Financing construction for restoration of LIRR service on the old Rockaway Beach branch would require a FTA Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA). The total project, be it $3, $8 billion, or more would require the MTA providing between 50% to 66% local share necessary to leverage the balance of federal dollars. It averages five or more years from admission into the FTA CIG program before a transit agency successfully completes the process and obtains federal funding under a FFGA grant. The scope of work agreed upon under the FFGA would include construction of tracks, third rail, interlockings, sidings, signals, pow er substations, stations including elevators to assure they meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) access requirements, commuter parking, bike racks, purchase of additional electric MU rail cars for service and modifications to existing or construction of new rail yards for maintenance and storage of equipment. I own a 2018 GMC Terrain. If I find out that my headlight isn’t working, I can bring it to the dealership and it will cost me more than $200 to have it fixed. I can also go to Auto Zone and pick up a headlight bulb for about $50 and spend a few hours sweating and cursing, trying to fix it myself. Or I can simply wait until it gets dark and drive two miles from Massapequa into Amityville. Once across the county line, I can drive up and down Route 110 until I find a Suffolk County police officer and flag them down. As soon as they see I have a dead headlight, they’ll issue me a voucher to have it replaced free of charge, as long as I use a certified repair shop. Which scenario would you choose?During my almost 50 years of driving, I’ve had a handful of times where I was ticketed for a head light or taillight not functioning. I had just 24 hours to repair it and get an officer to verify it or I would have to pay a fine. Of course, I had probably been driving around with one headlight for three months before I got caught, but that’s beside the point. Once they nailed me, I reached into my pocket and got it Thefixed.new program is partially sponsored by “Lights On,” a non-profit company out of Minnesota and began in June 2022. Suffolk County has decided that in stead of having their police officers hand out tickets to drivers with defective headlights or taillights, they will hand out vouchers for free car repairs. Isn’t that special? To start with, this program is being funded by the Federal gov ernment ($20,000) and a private donor. It has been successfully administered in 12 states and is intended to build trust between the police and the public. West Islip philanthropist Steve Castelton stepped up to the plate and do nated $15,000 to the program. The $35,000 will be matched by Lights On, bringing the total start-up fund to $70,000. A financial plan would have to be developed. This could include identifying local match against FTA capital grants to support advancement of the proj ect. The MTA would also have to ensure that they have adequate local operating dollars to cover farebox revenue shortfalls. Riders only pay for a portion of the cost for any trip. The MTA would also need to have the resources to maintain all the capital investments financed by the FTA. All federally funded capital project investments have useful life requirements. They are usually based on industry standards You need the same frequent enthusiastic support for years that Senator Chuck Schumer has shown on behalf of the $33 billion Gateway Tunnel and $6.9 billion Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 projects. He has yet to do the same for this project.

The State Department of Transportation is the federally sponsored planning orga nization, known locally as the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC). They produce a Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) which is part of the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The MTA must request that this project be added to both the TIP and STIP. The project needs to be included within the NYMTC Five-Year Short Range and 20-Year Long Range Plan for capital trans portation projects. The project also needs to be added to the MTA current $51 billion 2020-24, upcoming 2025-29 and 2030-34 Five-Year Capital Plans, along with the MTA 2020-40 20-Year Capital Needs Plan. All of these actions are also needed if you have any hope of boarding the first train by 2040 at the earliest. It will easily require 15 to 20 years from start to finish for successful completion. This is based on my prior first-hand work experience at FTA working with both the MTA and NJ Transit on similar projects for several decades.

all is the perfect time of year to introduce sod to your yard for the first time or to replace old grass with an upgraded, premium variety. Choosing a lawn installation company can be tricky though, and not all installers deliver a quality end result. Here are a few tips.

2 A good company should be licensed and insured. Save yourself a potential legal headache by choosing a company that is licensed and carries both general and workers compensation insurance. If something goes awry, these credentials ensure that you are protected.

1A good company should have a quality process. A solid sod installation company should have a thorough process in place. Several steps should be taken before sod is installed. Herbicides may be needed to rid the area of weeds and other unwanted growth, old sod should be removed—not just mowed or scalped, debris should be completely hauled away and the area should be re-graded.

“I feel like with the first record, I was so surrounded by white men,” Yola explained. “It was my connections with women of varying backgrounds/, hue and persuasion that gave me this wonderful ability to truly excavate everything I needed to [dig up] on this record. I was blessed to have a clutch of women that would get me there fully understanding where I was trying to go. Then I had to call Brandi—she’s obviously on the opposite end of the country up in Seattle. I told her she could send me a vocal and she was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m all over it.’ She was even telling me, ‘You know I’m going to be on this record, right?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I do.’”

“It felt like the arc of my journey from being a little of a dual-mapped person, to seeming like I was on my path properly felt like the inspiration to the arc of this record. A moment where life had realized some sense of timing. I negotiated how to get that for myself and how to have control over my own life—not anyone else’s—just mine. It was quite astounding how often I was in situations where people wanted to have control over my life and they didn’t even realize t hey were doing that. Every song was like a stop on the way to that.”

LIFESTYLE

“It became apparent during lockdown when I was adding songs to my coffer of tunes, that I was writing about something,” she recalled.

Getting Up On Her How Stand For Myself became Stories abound of how musicians navigated the full-stop nature of the pandemic. For English singer-songwriter Yola, the extended COVID-19 pause gave her a chance to do a deep dive into herself with Stand For Myself , the follow-up to her critically-acclaimed 2019 debut Walk Through Fire . The woman born Yolanda Claire Quartey has expanded the stylistic palette considerably more with this collection of songs. Yola’s reunion with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys producing finds the sounds of Yola’s childhood bubbling up and encompassing everything from hooky protest jams (“Diamond Studded Shoes”) and Bacharach-flavored pop (“Like a Photograph”) to Gamble & Huff-flavored disco (“Dancing Away in Tears”) and silk sheet R&B (“Now You’re Here”). In the process, Yola did self inventory in the aftermath of trying to hold onto her center, while weathering a tsunami of success.

A major factor allowing Yola to find the greater truth she was seeking on this project was the presence and contributions of a very female-centric supporting cast. Among the major contributors were less-familiar talents like Joy Oladokun and Ruby Amanfu and better-known names like Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby.

Own Two Feet

Yola’s personal deep dive her love of the latter’s debut and insisted she was going to hip Carlile to the British vocal powerhouse. The Highwomen project followed and, in its wake, doors of opportunity continued opening for Yola. “When I flew over to RCA Studio A in Nashville, I became fast friends with Brandi,” Yola said. “She said to bring a song and this was what they were thinking of doing. It became the connector to so many things. I met Brandi along with Natalie Hemby, who writes on five out of the 12 songs on my current record. I met Maren [Morris] and Amanda [Shires] there. I met Dave Cobb there. Obviously, I’ve been on the road with Dave and Chris Stapleton as well, so we got to see quite a lot of each other. [Dave] was doing the soundtrack to this movie [about Elvis Presley] and we had already connected. He’d seen how I worked in the studio and thought I would really smash this so he suggested I audition with everybody else [for a role] and I got the call-back. Everything seemed to kind of spring off my friendship with Brandi Carlile and Natalie Hemby.” As if a year full of touring dates isn’t enough, the film Yola was referencing is Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming Elvis biopic, in which Yola will be entireWithoutbutforpeople.aboutaandsomeOtislikerougher-edgedfitsparticularlyapioneergospel-star-turned-rock-and-rollplayingSisterRosettaTharpe.It’sroleYolaisthrilledtobeplaying,givenhowTharpe’ssoundalongsidethe30-something’schildhoodinfluencesMavisStaples,TinaTurnerandRedding.“Withthisrole,Igettoredressoftheinconsistenciesinrockroll’setymology,”Yolasaid.“It’sgreatprivilegetobeabletotalkthatandbringittotheforeforIknowI’mthejump-offpointElvis,asacharacterinthemovie,withoutme,youdon’thavehim.him,youdon’thavethescene.”Havingplayedasolebriefsetsince

Stand For Myself’s release, Yola is eager to share the entirety of her new material now that pandemic numbers are plunging and venues are opening, Anchored by the rhythm section of bassist Nick Movshon (Sharon Jones; Amy Winehouse) and drummer Aaron Frazer (Durand Jones and the Indications), Yola promises both substance and sizzle with this tour. “I knew this record needed a rhythm section steeped in disco and funk,” she said. “Feel in the pocket was paramount to the drum sections we had. We’ve been opening for Chris Stapleton doing short sets, so finally we get the full fat arrangement, delivery and everything. I learned about how I connect to this record and what is coming to the fore in these live performances. It’s also an opportunity to present these topics that can be taken on either a surface or deeper level and meeting people where they’re at.” Visit www.longislandweekly.com to read a longer version of this story.

South’s four-heart bid indicated the ace of hearts, and North’s five dia monds showed the king in the suit his partner had bid earlier. South replied in kind with five spades, identifying possession of the king, and North, delighted as the last piece fell into place, jumped to seven clubs, which was easily made. Recognizing the need for patients to quickly return to their normal activities, a Greenberg Rapid Recovery Procedure ensures both excellent results with a faster recovery period. In addition, there is a continued increase in the number of women having children at a later age who are seeking to obtain pre-pregnancy figure. Debra Mulé and Legislator Gina Sillitti have praised the bi partisan legislation, among others, calling its revisions overdue.

The next step, according to Nassau’s legislative (Democratic) minority, is hav ing the legislative (Republican) majority schedule a hearing or vote on the bill to create a local ‘home rule message’ as soon as “It’spossible.giving [homeowners] an opportunity that everyone else in the state has the abili ty to get as well,” explained Legislator Mulé in a phone interview. “Let’s let our citizens take“Ouradvantage.”region’shigh cost of living can make it tremendously challenging for seniors and disabled homeowners to make ends meet,” Legislator Solages said in a statement when the bill was re-introduced this past March. In a recent phone interview, Solages also commented, “It it now in the hands of the Republican majority, who held a press conference [in favor of the bill] a few weeks ago.” He added, “People [impacted by the law] really can’t afford to continue paying high property taxes.” When contacted for comment, represen tatives for Legislator Richard J. Nicolello, Presiding Officer of Nassau’s legislature, said that the bill will indeed be added to the legislature’s calendar sometime in September.BackinMarch, Assemblymember So lages commented in a statement, “It isn’t unusual for a Nassau County resident to owe $15,000 a year in property taxes alone. We must provide relief for our seniors who struggle to make ends meet while living paycheck to paycheck on social security or disability insurance. That is why I have introduced a piece of legislation with my colleague Senator Kevin Thomas that will lower property taxes for residents who are elderly or have disabilities. This property tax relief is available to the residents of Queens who live just a few miles away, so I see no reason why it should not be available to the residents of Nassau County.”

Property tax exemptions will be extended once lawmakers schedule a vote M ore Nassau County seniors and residents with limited incomes and disabilities will soon be eligible for reduced property taxes with an updated cutoff for income, according to legislators. The previous income limit for seniors and people with disabilities to receive a property tax exemption was $34,400, established almost two decades ago. The new income cap would be $58,400 per year, a substantial increase on the previous limit made to adjust for inflation and similar factors.

For persons with disabilities: To qualify, persons with disabilities generally must have certain documented evidence of their disability and meet certain income limitations and other requirements. The basic exemption is a 50% reduction in the assessed value of the legal residence of the qualifying disabled person. For the basic exemption, the law allows each county, city, town, village, or school district to set the maximum income limit at any figure between $3,000 and $50,000. Localities have the further option of giving exemptions of less than 50% to persons with qualifying disabilities whose incomes are more than $50,000. Under this option, called the “sliding-scale” option, a qualifying owner can have a yearly income as high as $58,399.99 and get a 5% exemption in places that are using the maximum limit.

Here’s some more information on the bill via the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website: Local governments and school districts in New York State can opt to grant a reduction on the amount of property taxes paid by qualifying senior citizens. This is accomplished by reducing the taxable assessment of the senior’s home by as much as 50%.

The Senior Citizens and Persons with Limited Incomes and Disabilities property tax exemptions bill, first introduced in 2019 by Legislator Ed Ra, and re-introduced this year by Legislator Carrié Solages, New York State Assembly Member Michaelle Solages, and State Senator Kevin Thomas, has already been passed at the state level, and was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul earlier in Co-sponsorsAugust.Legislator

The maximum income limit for properties in New York City is $50,000. Localities have the further option of giving exemptions of less than 50% to seniors whose incomes are more than $50,000.
