Powerful And Sporty Muscle Cars BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Nostalgia swells when many think back to the 1960s and 1970s, remembering the introduction of the American muscle cars. For some, it was their first car, their first and only true love. For others, the muscle car was one they could only dream of owning. And then for some, their love of the high-performance sports coupe comes only from photos of the cars their parents once owned. see MUSCLE CARS on page 4C
1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am The Firebird was built by Pontiac from 1967 to 2002. The name “Firebird” was also previously used by Pontiac’s parent company General Motors (GM) for the GM Firebird 1950s and early 1960s concept cars. The 1971 Trans Am was a trim option in the second-generation Firebirds.
1966 Pontiac GTO The first generations of the Pontiac GTO were built for the 1964 to 1974 model years. The GTO was selected as Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968. The GTO model was revived for the 2004 to 2006 model years as an import for Pontiac.
1967 Chevy Impala SS The full-sized Chevrolet Impala debuted in 1958, named after the African antelope. By 1965, it had become the nation’s best-selling car and remained Chevy’s most popular full-sized car through the mid-80s. Super Sport, or SS, is the performance option package offered by Chevrolet on a limited number of its vehicles. The package was first made available for the 1961 Impala.
1967 Ford Mustang Hardtop First-generation Mustangs were manufactured by Ford from 1964 to 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car, with long hoods and short decks. With each revision, the Mustang saw an increase in overall dimensions and in engine power.

MUSCLE CARS from page 3C
1969 Dodge Charger
The two-door, rear-wheel-drive muscle cars, usually fitted with a V8 engine, were designed for street use, but also for drag racing, a favorite pastime in the ’70s. The love of the muscle cars also spread across the world, with cars soon after being manufactured in the United Kingdom, Australia and several other hot spots. Although there are dozens of popular muscle cars, spanning two decades, take a look here at 9 of our favorites. —Compiled by Christy Hinko
The Charger (B-body) is a mid-size car, produced by Dodge from 1966 to 1978. During the early-1960s, automakers were exploring new ideas in the personal luxury and specialty car segments. Chrysler, fast to enter the specialty car market, selected their Dodge Division to enter the marketplace with a bigger model to fit between the “pony car” Ford Mustang and the “personal luxury” Ford Thunderbird.
1969 Dodge Super Bee The Super Bee, based on Dodge’s two-door coupe the Coronet, was produced from 1968 to 1971. At the time, it was a low-priced but powerful muscle car. Super Bee was named for its “B” body design.
1968 Chevy Chevelle The Chevelle, a mid-sized muscle car, was produced by Chevrolet in three generations from 1964 through 1977. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-Body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet’s most successful nameplates.

The Chevrolet Camaro is an automobile manufactured by Chevrolet and classified as a pony car, with some versions also designated as a muscle car. It went on sale in September 1966 for the 1967 model year and was designed as a competing model to the Ford Mustang. The car shared its platform and major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced in 1967.

“Cinderella Era” Of Your Vehicle Is No Fairy Tale
5C
BY RICH WHITE SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Once upon a time, buying a new car may have sounded like a dream come true, but keeping your car through the “Cinderella Era” can mean more gold at the end of the rainbow. The smartest way to get a solid return on your vehicle investment is to keep your car through what is called the “Cinderella Era.” That’s the period of time after the payoff when your car is still in great shape and needs only modest repairs. With proper care, the typical vehicle should deliver at least 200,000 miles of safe, dependable performance, and that’s no fairy tale. By simply allocating the equivalent of just one new car payment, motorists can cover an entire year’s worth of basic maintenance and live happily ever after with their current vehicle. The most common maintenance procedures and repairs to keep a car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term value involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires and air conditioning. The council also recommends an annual tune-up and wheel alignment. Whether it’s an oil change, replacing brakes, or getting new belts and hoses, that periodic repair bill is a drop in the bucket compared to
monthly payments on a new car. The end of the story is that a properly maintained vehicle is safer, more dependable, more fuel efficient, less polluting and more valuable. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Visit www. carcare.org for a copy of Car Care
Council’s care guide. Rich White is the executive director of Car Care Council.

Biener Audi Donates Lifesaving CPR Unit To Roslyn
Biener Audi recently presented a “Resusci Anne” cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training unit to Roslyn Hook & Ladder Company at the dealership in Great Neck. “It’s a great honor to present the Roslyn Hook & Ladder Company with this life-saving CPR unit,” said Andrew Weinstock, executive vice president of Biener Audi, a part of the community since 1929. “They do such an incredible job protecting our community; it’s the least we can do.” The units allow personnel to train area residents on the correct way to provide CPR, allowing those trained to save the lives of countless people who suffer heart attacks and are in need of immediate attention. CPR training units help save lives and give comfort and security to those trained. Nationwide, since 1975, franchised automobile dealers have donated thousands of manikins
worth more than $4 million on which more than 2 million people have been trained. Biener Audi is a member of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA) which administers the CPR donations on behalf of the National Automobile Dealers

While many roads on Long Island have had their potholes repaired or have received some degree of pothole maintenance, there is still a considerable amount of potholes that need some attention. The amount of existing potholes that remain is usually one factor in deciding when to schedule tire alignment for your vehicle. Read on to learn more about tire alignments. Bad roads can be your wheels’ worst enemy. If you drive down poorly maintained roads, drive through potholes, or even hit a curb, your alignment can be greatly affected. This can cause even the slightest, tiniest alignment issue, which can accelerate uneven tire wear. Make sure you have your alignment checked every 6,000 miles or so. A wheel alignment ensures optimal drivability. It will help your tires last longer and your vehicle drive smoother, ultimately keeping your wheels pointed in the right direction. And, when it drives more smoothly, it’s smooth sailing—or should we say cruising—ahead. Plus, your car will require less energy to keep going, potentially saving a ton of fuel depending on how much alignment was required. When your car rolled

off the manufacturer’s assembly line, it came preset with special angles that position your tires correctly. And for good reason. In order for your vehicle to travel the way it’s supposed to, it will need precise alignment. Misalignment can lead to uneven tire wear, poor handling and shorter tire life. Tires are expensive. Keeping them aligned isn’t. There are some noticeable signs that could indicate a misalignment. Just use your eyes, ears and hands. Your senses (and even the good old personal hunch) are good human capital for spotting poor alignment. Here are some common signs that you are dealing with wheels with poor alignment: •Vehicle pulling to the left or right •Uneven or rapid tire wear •Your steering wheel is crooked when driving straight •Squealing tires Many drivers have met their fair share of pothole woes, and striking one directly can cause considerable damage to your tires and reduce your vehicle’s performance. A word of advice: do your best to avoid the remaining potholes; your tires and your wallet will thank you. Most local tire stores and mechanics will perform tire alignments, including Firestone, Sears and Mavis.

Sharing The Road With Motorcycles Nassau County Acting Police Commissioner Thomas C. Krumpter would like to remind motorists that it is important to be cognizant of sharing the road with motorcyclists. Motorcycles lack the safety devices of most cars and trucks, like seatbelts and airbags, which would explain why it’s almost always the motorcycle riders who are most at risk in collisions with passenger vehicles. In addition to their ability to weave in and out of lanes, motorcycles are smaller and harder to spot. Motorcycles are the smallest vehicles on the roads. And because of their size, they often appear to be faster and farther away than they actually are. Here are six general rules to bear in mind the next time you share the road with motorcycles.
Check your blind spots often
Motorcycles are smaller than cars; it’s that much easier for them to slip into your blind spot—especially when they’re attempting to pass you. Swivel your head to check your blind spots regularly and, in particular, before changing lanes.
Follow the 4-second rule
Increase your driving distance
7C
If you see a motorcycle at an intersection, attempt to make eye contact with its rider before turning in its direction. Many motorcycles aren’t equipped with self-canceling turn signals like cars; a rider simply may forget to turn it off. If you have to pass or drive next to a motorcycle with a lingering turn signal, proceed with caution.
Night riding
when you find yourself behind a motorcycle and maintain a cushion of at least four seconds. Choose an object (a tree, road sign, or house) and count the seconds between when the motorcycle passes and when you pass. This cushion gives you time to react to the unexpected.
Respect Mother Nature
You already know it’s important to adjust your driving in bad weather. Inclement weather including strong winds is even more hazardous for bikers than for drivers. Bad weather
conditions reduce our own visibility and may make motorcycles more difficult to see. Give yourself and the motorcyclist additional space.
Look before you turn
A whopping 44 percent of two-vehicle, fatal motorcycle accidents in 2013 were the result of a car trying to turn left while the motorcycle went straight, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Initiate your turn signal sooner than you normally would when you know there is a motorcycle near you.
Driving at night can be treacherous for motorcyclists. When driving at night increase your following distance and ensure that your high-beam lights are turned off when you notice an approaching motorcycle and refrain from passing.
Be extra cautious
Motorcycles react more quickly than cars; maintain an adequate following distance while maintaining a safe lane of traffic. Always be extra cautious when passing, motorcycles may become unstable from the gust of wind created by your passing vehicle. Always leave several car lengths between vehicles. —Submitted by Nassau County Police Department
