2016 NEW CAR MODELS:
At The Intersection Of Popular And Unique
With auto manufacturers soon set to roll out their 2016 model launches, it’s the opportune time to look closely at the Resonate 2015 research on U.S. consumers shopping for new cars and ask: What purchase drivers will spell the difference between automobile winners and losers? Is 2016 really all about the latest car technology, or are there other purchase drivers at work? Perhaps no clearer evidence exists that the worlds of automobile manufacturing and consumer technology have converged than January’s 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, in which a record 10 carmakers showcased the latest in high-tech automobile gadgetry alongside the latest in smart phones, televisions and wearable tech. From Daimler’s electric-powered Mercedes-Benz F 015 to Volkswagen’s autopilot-equipped Passat to Hyundai’s smartwatch connected models, the next generation of cars promises to integrate seamlessly into our tech-obsessed lives like never before. When we took a closer look at 49 million U.S. adults in the market for a new car within the next 12 months, we found that carmakers are indeed on the right track: “innovation” will be a watchword for 2016. Another word, however, will become equally important to auto dealers in the next year: “popular.” New car buyers want the latest tech—but they also want the hottest models that help them showcase their self-image. New car buyers are a young audience; 61 percent are under age 44, with the largest demographic in the 25-34 range. When we examined the automobile product attributes most important to this largely millennial audience, we found that they’re unmoved by such traditional automobile attributes as dependable, practical and durable— while
pluralities think they’re important, new car buyers slightly under-index on their importance when compared to the general U.S. population. Overall, this audience values unique and innovative products—and they over-index even more highly on these attributes in the auto sector. Interestingly, the attributes that drive their auto purchases mirror, but are more pronounced than, the attributes that drive their tech purchases. This synergy should well serve carmakers highlighting the latest automobile tech in their product launches. Even more important to new car shoppers than automobile product innovation, however, is product popularity. In our purchase driver analysis, popular emerges as a primary product attribute across a variety of product categories—but nowhere more highly than in automobile purchases. How, then, can we explain the seeming dichotomy between the primary product attributes of unique and popular? How can an automobile purchase fulfill both attributes at once? We may find clues in an exploration of this audience’s personal values. While in some ways holders of traditional values—43 percent of new car buyers, for example, hold “taking care of family” as a personal value—they don’t over-index on traditional values when compared to the general population. They do, however, over-index on “self-image” as a primary personal value. They also over-index on “sense of belonging.” They seek an automobile purchase that stands at the intersection of self-actualization and the feeling of belonging to a tribe—a car at the nexus of unique and popular. Reprinted with permission from Resonate, Inc. (www.blog.resonate.com/2016-new-car-buyers).
This audience also shares online: 69 percent are medium-to-heavy users of social media, and they dramatically over-index on daily usage of Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. The task for automobile marketers, therefore, is to leverage social media to build excitement for new car model launches that live at the heart of unique, popular and innovative. Highlight the technology, certainly, but remind car buyers that the technology is a means to connect them to the wider world of their peers.

Often it’s frightening. Sometimes it’s deadly. Road rage—where flaring tempers mix with two-ton machines—continues to be a problem on America’s highways, leading to accidents, assaults and occasionally even murder. It’s a perplexing problem in part because it can happen at anytime and anywhere that roads and vehicles are involved, yet specific statistics on its frequency are hard to come by. All that aside, though, there are solutions that can at least reduce the number of road-rage incidents. People who are easily angered by slower drivers, detours and other traffic disruptions can be taught to be more aware of their responses and modify them to reduce accident risks, according to research published this year by the Society for Risk Analysis. That let’s-calm-down approach is applauded by Scott Morofsky, author of the books The Daily Breath: Transform Your Life One Breath at a Time and Wellativity: In-Powering Wellness Through Communication. “Sometimes there’s this tendency to throw on the brakes when someone is tailgating us, or use an obscene gesture at an aggressive driver,” said Morofsky, who developed the concept of Wellativity, which helps people address any behavior that inhibits wellness. “But when you encounter an aggressive driver, you don’t want to engage them or do anything to further agitate them.” What are some of our behaviors that can aggravate other drivers? The number one culprit is drivers who are texting, according to a 2015 Road Rage Report by Expedia.com, the travel site. Those texting drivers upset 26 percent of us. Other offenders, in descending order, are tailgaters, left-lane hogs, slow drivers and drivers multi-tasking. Of course, those examples represent situations that can raise your ire after you are behind the wheel. Often, the foundation for fury on the highway was laid before you got into the car. Maybe
you had an argument with someone earlier. Maybe you are stressed because you are running late for an appointment. “Probably all of us at some time have been angry and someone wisely told us to take a deep breath,” Morofsky
said. “That’s actually good advice because breathing and taking in oxygen plays an important role in every area of our health and well-being.” Morofsky offers these tips for heading off your own road rage or avoiding the rage of others: • Don’t turn that ignition. If you are feeling stressed and anxious before you even start your trip, then the time to calm down is now, not after you are on the highway. Get a grip before you start the car, suggested Morofsky. Take that deep breath you always heard would work. You might even try counting from one to 10, inhaling on one, exhaling on two, up to 10 and back to one again. “You want to be relaxed before you head out,” he said. • Stop right there. If you are already driving, and you feel your anger is starting to impact your judgment, pull over for a few moments. “Breathe and ask yourself, is my problem important enough to risk lives?” he said. “Taking a few conscious breaths could prevent a catastrophe.” • Don’t react or retaliate. You can’t control those other drivers, but you can control how you react to them. If someone is tailgating you, flipped you off or is just infuriating you with bad driving habits, ignore them, Morofsky said. Engaging in some sort of roadrage argument will just further raise your blood pressure, and could prove dangerous in some circumstances. This is just one more opportunity to take that deep breath, he suggested. Brittany Thomas is the print campaign manager at News & Experts.

2015 Auto Financing Report BY JOHN S. KIERNAN
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Is it a good time to buy a car? Well, July witnessed over 5 percent year-over-year increase in U.S. light vehicle sales, bringing annualized projections to 17.35 million, more than last year’s output. Both General Motors and Ford enjoyed strong showings, particularly from SUVs, with the former posting a 13.4 percent annual increase in its utility vehicle category and the latter enjoying the growth of sub-brands like Buick, whose Encore model recently posted its 19th consecutive year-over-year sales increase and topped July 2014 numbers by 68 percent. Domestic lenders also seem to be accommodating the evolving needs of car buyers, with the average loan term approaching six years as the average sale price continues to rise—up 2.5 percent in June to $33,340, according to the Kelley Blue Book. Thus it is clear why such a simple query—is now the right time to buy?—demands the consideration of such wide-ranging factors, from your monthly disposable income and what type of car you’re interested in
to whether you should buy or lease and from where you’ll get the best financing. The data provided in this report will help you make those decisions. This information is based on a detailed analysis of financing offers from a diverse group of 158 lenders.
Key Findings • Interest rates for new cars are close to the lowest point of the last three years. However, the average new car loan now charges 19 percent less interest than the average used car loan. • Now is the time for people with excellent credit to buy used cars. The average interest rate for such buyers has fallen nearly 35 percent since the beginning of 2014. • Overall, buyers who have fair credit will end up spending about six times more to finance a vehicle than someone with excellent credit, which equates to $6,100 in additional interest payments over the life of a $20,000, five-year loan. • People in the market for a new car should start their search for financing with car manufacturers (rates 61 percent below average) and credit unions (30 percent below average). National banks (10 percent above average),
139920
6B
and regional banks (43 percent above average) should be secondary options. • Car manufacturers continue to lack transparency when it comes to leasing offers, with the average one receiving a WalletHub Transparency Score of 4.0/10. The most transparent manufacturers are currently Mazda, Infiniti, BMW, Acura, Mercedes, Honda, Volkswagen, Kia and Mini, and even they registered only a 6-point rating. • Toyota, Volkswagen, Kia, Ford, Dodge, Nissan and Buick offer the lowest financing rates out of the major car manufacturers we surveyed. On the other hand, Volvo, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota have the best leasing offers. • If you plan to keep your car for only three years, 95 percent of manufacturers will give you a better deal if you
finance instead of lease. Nevertheless, always make sure to do the math in order to ensure you’re maximizing savings. Visit www.wallethub.com/ edu/auto-financing-report/10131/ for more information about this report. John S. Kiernan writes for Wallethub.com.
AAA Warns Drivers: School’s Open, Drive Carefully BY SUSAN ROBERTS
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
As millions of students statewide have already returned to school in the past two weeks, AAA warns drivers to be extra cautious behind the wheel, especially near school zones. “During summer vacation, drivers become accustomed to lighter traffic,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., manager of media relations for AAA Northeast-New York region. “There has been a steady decline in deaths and injuries to 5- to 14-year-olds, the age group most at risk for pedestrian injury. However, when school starts, the danger to children increases.” Sinclair added, “With so many children on the roads in buses, cars and walking, it is critical that drivers be more attentive.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013 there were 4,735 pedestrian fatalities, five percent, or 236, were children 14 and younger. More than 10,000 children pedestrians were seriously injured. AAA urges drivers to: • Slow down near schools, bus stops and playgrounds. • Obey lower speed limits in school zones.
• Be cautious in school areas, keeping your speed at or below posted limits and being prepared to stop on both sides of the street for school buses with flashing red lights, as required by New York State law. • Remember, hands-free is not riskfree. Don’t talk or text while driving. • Drive carefully in bad weather. AAA long ago recognized the problem of student deaths and injuries, establishing the “School’s Open, Drive Carefully” initiative in 1945. Students have been helping to guide their peers safely to and from school through the AAA School Safety Patrol program since 1920, with many noteworthy Americans attributing their success in life to the responsibility and discipline they learned as Safety Patrol members in their youth. Noteworthy Safety Patrol members include: Lee Iacocca, Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Rudolph Giuliani, Olympic gold medalists Lynette Woodard and Edwin Moses, Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Burger and many others, including 21 astronauts. Susan Roberts writes for AAA Northeast-New York region.
