Car Care: 5 Smart Buys To Beat Winter BY ANTON MEDIA GROUP

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

We aren’t quite there yet, with temperatures hovering in the 50s and 60s, but it is almost a guarantee that Long Island will see its share of snow soon. Rain, ice and snow during the winter months can take a toll on your vehicle and jeopardize your safety. Outfitting your car or truck with the proper equipment and tools can help ensure your vehicle operates in top condition to get you to your destination without incident.

Get a jump-start on winter with these smart buys, recommended by the experts at Michelin:

Ice scraper: In regions that see ample ice and snowfall, a sturdy scraper is a must. Options are plentiful, from basic models with a small single blade to more deluxe versions featuring extra wide blades, built-in gloves to keep hands warm and dry, and brushes to help wipe away mounds of snow before tackling the ice layer. Handle shapes and materials vary, too, so be sure to test several options to find a comfortable fit to make the onerous chore less difficult. Windshield wipers: Heat extremes of the summer months tend to

damage wiper blades, so it’s a good idea to replace them before winter sets in. Damaged wiper blades can result in annoying noises during operation, but more important, they can affect your visibility in inclement weather conditions. A hybrid blade is a good choice for winter because it combines the technology of traditional metal wiper blades and improved pressure of beam wiper blades for top performance during extreme weather. The soft rubber shell protects against damage from ice scrapers. Changing the rear wiper blade, if your vehicle has one, is also important for optimum visibility and safer winter driving. Winter fluids: Make sure you always have at least half a tank of gas to avoid a frozen fuel line. Also, carry extra windshield washer fluid to ensure proper visibility and avoid diluting windshield washer fluid with water as it could freeze at low temperatures. Washer fluid with de-icer additive can help prevent ice buildup as you’re driving. In addition, a spray de-icer is a handy way to clear a heavily iced vehicle or help gain access to a frozen lock. Winter tires/chains: If you frequently encounter snow or ice, or if the temperature consistently approaches freezing, your tires need the extra

grip and turning capabilities that only winter tires can deliver. Even if you have four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, you still need winter tires to conquer the elements and stay safe. Winter tires are designed to perform better in a wide range of wintry conditions, improving your vehicle’s grip and performance and shortening your braking distances. Emergency kit: In case of emergencies, you may get stuck or need to spend time in your car waiting for help. Make sure that your vehicle is equipped to handle a wide range of scenarios. Always be sure to carry a tire gauge, jack and fully inflated spare. If you get stuck, you’ll be glad to have a shovel and gravel, salt or a small piece of carpet for traction. Jumper cables or even a portable charger can help address battery related problems. Maximize your safety with emergency flares and a first-aid kit. In addition, stash a small supply of non-perishable food and water, as well as warm clothes or a blanket, especially if you’ll be driving lesser-traveled roads. Before you pack up the car to head home for the holidays make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey. Conducting a thorough vehicle inspection will help you avoid the inconvenience and potential safety hazards of breaking down miles away from home. “It’s easy to remember to get your family ready for the holiday festivities, but what about preparing the car that’s going to get you there?” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Having a pre-inspection performed on your car will give you peace of mind as you travel and help make your journey safer.” Before leaving home, check the following, often overlooked, items: tires and tire pressure, brakes, hoses and belts, air filters, wipers, exterior and interior lighting, and fluid levels, including engine oil, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. “A pre-trip inspection provides the opportunity to have service repairs made at home by your own trusted technician who knows the vehicle, and helps reduce the chance of costly and dangerous trouble on the road,” said White. Drivers should keep important telephone numbers in their cell phone or glove box in case of a breakdown or travel emergency. Vehicles should have a roadside emergency kit that includes items such as a first aid kit, a tire-changing jack, a tire pressure gauge, jumper

Leasing Versus Buying Your Next Car Credit Scores & Insurance

BY NATHANIEL SILLIN

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Leasing:

Pros: Lower down payments and monthly payments than required with a conventional auto loan; low repair costs thanks to factory warranties typically tied to the term of the lease (usually three years); easy drop-off or trade-in once the lease expires; and lower sales tax expense because the lease is based on only three or four years of use. Cons: You’re essentially renting a car, not buying it—payments are cheaper because you’re really only paying interest and depreciation expense and not receiving any equity in the vehicle; annual mileage caps (usually 12,000-15,000 miles) come with stiff penalties if you exceed those limits; and potentially steep fees for excessive wear-and-tear on the car or

WINTER from page 9A

early termination of the lease.

Buying:

Pros: Freedom to put as much or as little mileage, wear-and-tear and modification on the vehicle as you choose; long-term (100,000 miles or over) car ownership with good maintenance can be much more economical long term; and because you own the car, you can sell at any time. Cons: You’ll generally require a higher down payment than a lease; monthly loan payments are generally higher because unlike leasing, you’ll be taking ownership of the car once it’s paid off;; once factory warranties expire, you’ll take on full maintenance costs for an aging car that may or may not be expensive; and you’ll have more cash tied up in a depreciating asset for as long as you own the car. All these positives and negatives aside, it’s important to know that with loans and leases most details are negotiable, so it’s important to do your research. Start by estimating how much car you can actually afford (www.practicalmoneyskills.com/ howmuchcarcanyouafford) and seek out qualified financial and tax advice to shape how you’ll approach the best possible deal for your financial situation. For many, leasing requires more extensive study because this form of financing is relatively new to most drivers and the terminology (www. cars.com/advice/) can be daunting. cables, a flashlight and a blanket. A copy of the recently updated 80-page Car Care Guide by the Car Care Council should be kept in the glove box and can be ordered free of charge at www. carcare.org/car-care-guide. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Visit www. carcare.org for more information.

But generally, the best deals depend on two major factors—negotiating the lowest price on the vehicle going in and making sure it’s a vehicle that has a high estimated post-lease value. In short, the lessor’s ability to keep making money on a high-value leased vehicle allows a lower monthly payment at the start. Bottom line: If you need a vehicle, it pays to evaluate whether lease or purchase makes the most sense for you. Know your needs and get advice so you can make the most affordable choice for you. Nathaniel Sillin directs Visa’s financial education programs.

In recent years, an applicant’s credit score has grown in importance for determining car insurance prices. Every agency now asks for credit scores before determining coverage rates. According to www.lower-auto-insurance.com, financial analysts have noticed that credit rating has a growing influence on auto insurance prices. The changes may have been caused by the recent financial crisis, when many auto insurance policies lapsed. To avoid financial losses, agencies may now decide how much to charge someone based on his or her credit score. Someone who has a good credit rating may get cheaper insurance premiums, as the agency believes that clients who have a good financial situation will be better able to cover their premium expenses. “Your credit rating can determine how much you have to pay for vehicle coverage.” said Russell Rabichev, marketing director of Internet Marketing Company. According to Edmunds.com, more than 25 percent of new American cars are now financed by lease instead of loan, and most of the people making that choice are under age 35. It’s all about the lowest possible monthly payment. Yet for drivers young and old, leasing has grown substantially because it can also be done with little or no money down and the chance to get a newer, better car for less money overall. The main disadvantage? You won’t own the car unless you buy it at the end of the lease, which may or may not be a good deal. Experian Automotive—a division of the major credit reporting service—reported in mid-2015 a nearly $100-a-month savings for those who lease cars versus those who buy their cars by loan. Their numbers showed the average monthly payment for a brand-new leased vehicle was $394 a month against $483 for a new vehicle purchased by loan. So would leasing be a good deal for you? Don’t decide without research, qualified advice and a thorough look at your finances. Start with the major pros and cons:
