Made up of nine villages and unincorporated areas, Great Neck has a lot of moving parts and a fabulous reputation as a destination spot where people come to raise their families amid the stellar public school system, myriad recreational facilities and a plethora of parks that are a joy to experience regardless of the time of year. Anton Media Group has taken great pride in covering this unique and intriguing community by way of our weekly newspaper, The Great Neck Record, since 1908. Sheri ArbitalJacoby, the paper’s editor, gives a solid overview of our publication’s storied history. To get a more contemporary feel for what we’re covering in the community, we encourage you to visit www.greatneckrecord.com. The richness of Great Neck includes quite a bit of culture. Jennifer Fauci highlights the nonprofit Dance Visions NY, a unique organization that showcases the work of the legendary Isadora Duncan along with unique and original dance works. We’re also featuring Betsy Abraham’s piece on the Great Neck Music Conservatory, which is one of the more renowned music schools on Long Island. Elsewhere, Kimberly Dijkstra shares all the things to do and see on Middle Neck Road. And if you’re looking for a little outdoor space to check out, be sure to read Allison Eichler’s story on Steppingstone Park. One thing Great Neck is famous for is the array of eateries to choose from. Christina Claus takes us on a trip to experience the best authentic ethnic foods to try. Among the cuisines she highlights is Northern Italian (Bevanda Restaurant), kosher Persian (Chatanooga Glatt Kosher Persian Restaurant), Thai (Krung Tap), French (Brasserie Americana), Chinese (New Fu Run) and Japanese (Chez Kama). As part of the dining theme, Jennifer also spoke with celebrity chef Alex Guarnaschelli, who often frequents the North Shore in quest of new and exciting dining experiences. We also feature a Great Neck directory that includes information about the community’s schools, elected officials and libraries. Lastly, Sheri spoke with a number of residents who share what they love about living here in a section we call My Great Neck. As you can see, there’s plenty to dive into with this issue of Great Neck Record Magazine this season, an experience you’ll undoubtedly enjoy as we scratch the surface of what makes Great Neck so wonderful. Musical Great Neck Music Conservatory hits all the right notes

10

GREAT NECK MAGAZINE

By Betsy Abraham

A

s a sophomore at Yale University, Zachary Lee enjoys a variety of musical education classes and extracurriculars: composition, chamber groups, a cappella and music theory, amongst others. And while the Great Neck North alum has a bright musical future ahead of him, it was his past at the Great Neck Music Conservatory that paved the way for his success. “My lessons were a big part of my life. I benefited from having that artistic side developed and it helped me in my education and in becoming a well-rounded performer,” Lee says. “My musical experience has helped me to be well-rounded and to develop a very important part of my character. Lee is just one of the many success stories to come out of the Great Neck Music Conservatory (GNMC), a premiere music academy that has been training children and adults to fine-tune their musical inclinations for the last 37 years. Located on Middle Neck Road, the Conservatory is the nurturing ground for aspiring musicians from Long Island and Queens. It’s where students not only have a safe space to expand on their talents, but to embrace the beauty of music. “Most of our students are taking music to enhance their lives because it’s beautiful and educational and enriches their soul. It’s our goal here to show kids and their parents what music can do for their lives,” says Pippa Borisy, who co-directs the Conservatory, with her husband, Vadim Lando. “Only a few students are going to make music their professional life, but music just

Harmony enhances every bit of being human. That’s what we are trying to show our students—that it’s something positive, it’s a universal language, something they can take with them the rest of their lives.” Studies have proven time and time again that teaching school-aged children music can improve their academic skills, cultivate discipline and strengthen memory functions. More than just learning how to play notes on a page, Great Neck Music Conservatory musicians learn socialization, as they form friendships with students from across town lines, as well as develop confidence while performing recitals throughout the year. Borisy noted that the Conservatory is also a feeding ground for pre-college conservatories such as Juilliard’s high school program and The Manhattan School of Music. And with GNMC helping to build well-rounded individuals, it’s no surprise that many students find themselves going onto Ivy League schools. The link between higher education and their musical extracurriculars is obvious, says Borisy. “Music education…helps you function on a higher level as a human being. You listen to things in a different way;

creativity is a part of life,” says Borisy, who adds that the effect of studying music at a young age has long-lasting effects. “Kids that spend time studying music have a chance to realize this potential, and later on in life, maybe they go to concerts more or play chamber music with friends as amateurs or listen to the radio in a different way or pick up an instrument to relax.” A key part in ensuring student success is making sure they’re learning from the best in their field. Pupils study under the tutelage of distinguished faculty, including concert artists trained at world-class music schools and university-level music professors. With the exception of music theory and chamber music, all lessons are one-onone, allowing for personalized instruction and mentorship. The one-hour lessons shared by teacher and students are often about more than just music, notes Borisy. “This is often the closest relationship students have with an adult outside their family,” she says. “Lots of things come up in that hour and students feel free to talk about their lives and their worries. I always say it’s 75 percent music and 25 percent therapy. There’s a really important connection between the student and teacher.”

Left: One of the highlights of the year is the Conservatory’s annual concert at Carnegie Hall. (Photos courtesy Great Neck Music Conservatory)

Right: A Great Neck Music Conservatory student performs a solo during a trip to a festival in Italy.

The Conservatory offers classes in guitar, piano, strings, voice and wind instruments, with an emphasis on classical music. Borisy acknowledges that classical music isn’t mainstream, but that every student who tries it, loves it. “I think classical music has always fought a bit to stay around, but I haven’t had a single student who’s been introduced to [it] who hasn’t really loved it,” she says, adding that perfecting the genre requires commitment. “It’s not instant gratification. There’s an investment of time, work and energy involved before you can experience the reward. That’s an important lesson for students. That’s how it is with everything in life and they learn that with their instrument.” And, despite the myriad activities competing for students’ attention, Borisy notes that music lessons have retained their popularity. “There will always be things competing, but music ranks up there. It’s hard to start music and then just let it go, it’s something that needs consistency,” she says. “Once they reach a certain level, they realize it’s important to continue it.” And those who do commit to their craft see rewards. The Conservatory offers students

exciting opportunities to perform at venues like Carnegie Hall and the Jeanne Rimsky Theater in Port Washington, and a small group also attends a prestigious musical festival in Italy each year as well. And whether or not they’re performing for an audience of one or 1 million, the lessons taught at the Conservancy can serve students well for the rest of their lives. “One of our purposes is to show that you can do something just because it’s beautiful. There’s something really profound about music because like any of the arts, it’s the deepest expression of feeling,” says Borisy. “For kids to just experience that for a moment, to take an hour and talk about how to make a phrase more beautiful, those are profound moments.”

The Home Cook

Celebrity chef, author and restaurateur Alex Guarnaschelli shares what she loves about Long Island By Jennifer Fauci

A

lex Guarnaschelli is passionate about many things, from food to travel to charities. But if you get her talking about the history of American cuisine, she will proudly take her place in line and educate you on all things food and how simple ingredients are sometimes the most wonderful items in a cook’s kitchen. After moving to France for several years to study at La Varenne Culinary School in Burgundy, Guarnaschelli began making a name for herself on the culinary scene. She returned to New York and in 2003, the venerable chef became the executive chef at Butter Midtown, a stylized dining destination that specializes in elite American fare, located at 415 Lafayette Street in Manhattan. The Food Network star recently wrapped up her cookbook, The Home Cook: Recipes to Know By Heart. It seems cooking along with writing is in her blood, as the chef’s mother edited the seminal 1997 edition of The Joy of Cooking, which defined the food of the late 20th century. On her website, Guarnaschelli states, “I honestly feel as if I learned to eat according to whatever cookbook my mother was working on at the time.” In The Home Cook, Guarnaschelli pens a cookbook for the everyday eater, with 300 recipes including Roasted Beef Brisket with Pastrami Rub, Fennel and Orange Salad with Walnut Pesto and Dark Chocolate Rum Pie. A sucker for a good farm stand—she once said that her heart palpitates when she goes to one—Guarnaschelli loves fresh produce, and would love to cook her way through Long Island, vegetable-wise.

Q: What do you enjoy most about Great Neck and the North Shore area? A: I have many friends in Great Neck. It is such a beautiful and historic area of New York and the North Shore has incredible produce and great micro-breweries. Q: C an you share your three favorite restaurants of all time? A: Among my favorite restaurants are Hearth and Bistro Pierre Lapin in New York City. I also love Bostwick’s Chowder House in Amagansett and Duryea Lobster in Montauk. Q: It is finally autumn! What do you love most about this season? A: Squash and apples alone could sum up what I look forward to. There are so many varieties and every one has their own unique flavor. The changing of the leaves as the weather gets cold is stunning as well. Q: Do you have a must-cook recipe this time of year? A: I have to go with the roasted chicken wrapped in bacon. It goes beautifully with so many great Long Island fall ingredients, like slow-cooked apples or roasted grapes. Q: What’s new at Butter? A: We have a lunch prix fixe menu for fall. I always enjoy the transition from corn and tomatoes to squash and pears.

While the marina season is over by November, Steppingstone Park keeps the dock open year-round for those who wish to walk and enjoy views of the Sound.

Reserved only for residents with park cards, Steppingstone is a pristine wonderland of water activities, grassy expanses and children’s activities. Tables are painted with a checkerboard for checkers or chess enthusiasts, an American flag billows before a fountain as perfectly manicured shrubs and flowers symmetrically line the surrounding area, and a wading pool, splash pad and playground hold the laughter and joy of the children who clamber onto its equipment each day. Enjoy expansive views of the Long Island Sound from one of the many benches scattered around the lawn, or bring a chair and settle into the sand surrounding the marine area. Feeling fishy? Cast a line from the dock and reel in something for dinner. Kayaking, sailing and jet-skiing are just a few of the many aquatic activities available for guests to take part in during the May to November marina season. The 12.8-acre park was established in the early 1940s as a simple beach where the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy currently stands. As it came to move to its modern-day location, the land kept associations with Walter Chrysler and George Cohan, and multiple plaques around the park denote its special history. Over nearly 70 years, Steppingstone has only gotten better. A full-time staff and parttime seasonal staff work year-round to keep Steppingstone in tip-top condition through landscaping, renovation and maintenance. “We are constantly trying to enhance and beautify the already amazing park that we have,” says Great Neck Park District Superintendent Jason Marra. “This is like the jewel of the park district; one of our parks that people have come to know and love.”

20

GREAT NECK MAGAZINE

The park employs staff year-round to keep the grounds in pristine condition.

With summer activities like a camp program, outdoor yoga, archery classes, summer performing arts series, family fun day and multiple festivals, Stepping Stone is a community hub during the warm weather months. In the winter, activities may come to an end, but the park is never without footprints. “People will come to the park even during the winter time just to enjoy the view and the tranquility and the peacefulness,” says Marra, who noted that the dock is always open for those looking to take a waterside stroll.

A large white house is the centerpiece of the park and is home to parties, meetings and the Playscape, which is an indoor play area, complete with themed rooms like a diner and supermarket, for children ages 2 to 7. “It’s a destination park,” notes Great Neck Park District Commissioner Robert Lincoln, Jr. “This is one of Great Neck’s secret treasures. People have said they step through that gate and you go into a different world.” For more information about Steppingstone Park, visit www.gnparks.org.

Great Neck Athlete By Christopher Birsner The Great Neck high schools have athletic programs that are filled with talented student athletes. We sat down with two students, one from each high school, and spoke with them about their accomplishments and the love they have for their respective sports.

S

arah Tsai, a freshman attending Great Neck North High School, is a member of the school’s swim team and has already left an impact on the school’s record books. She first got into swimming when she was 5-years old. “I love the adrenaline when you hit the water and you can start competing,” says Tsai. While she is most comfortable doing the backstroke, she is highly skilled in every single swimming style. With the exception of two events, Tsai has broken all-time high school records for fastest times in almost every event she played in. What’s even more incredible is that she broke these records before she reached the high school. “She joined the varsity swim team in eighth grade,” says head coach Paul Rodriguez. “In that year, she broke the 200-IM record, the 200-freestyle record, the 50-freestyle record, the 100-backstroke record, the 500-backstroke record, and she was on the record-breaking 200-freestyle relay.” She played so well in her last year of middle

school that she made it all the way to the New York state meet. And her dominance didn’t stop there. As she began freshman year, she broke the 100-butterfly record, the 100 freestyle-record, and her 200-freestyle record a second time. She has immediately made her team better so early on in her tenure with the team, but that doesn’t mean her team hasn’t made her better as well. “They are always there to support me,” says Tsai. “Before a race, I’m usually nervous and they comfort me.” As for what the future holds, she is just getting her feet wet in her high school career. She is currently working a full class load and is involved in math and science honors classes. Tsai has dabbled in science research and is considering pursuing a career in the medical field. For now, she will continue looking to lead her team for the foreseeable future. “She has ambition and she is not afraid to help those who aren’t as experienced as she is,” says Rodriguez. “As a coach, it’s incredibly awesome to have an example of what hard work looks like.”

onovan Pham, a junior attending Great Neck South High School, is currently the quarterback of the joint football team of the Great Neck high schools. He first got into the sport when he was in seventh grade but didn’t start playing until his freshman year. “I love that it puts a heavy emphasis on the team aspect,” says Pham. “It’s not like other sports where one player can carry the team. You need all 11 guys on the field to get a simple five-yard play.” Pham originally was interested in playing safety, but he loves having the opportunity of being the leader of an offensive drive down the field. “I have enjoyed the relationships I was able to make over the course of two years,” says Pham. “High school football is the purest form, where it’s just you and your friends having fun.”

One of his favorite games that he played was in a loss to Friends Academy, but what he loved about it was what happened near the end of the first half. “I went through a lot of adversity just to see the field and when I had my chance, I scored a touchdown with two seconds left in the second quarter,” says Pham. “The energy of the crowd and the team was nothing I’ve seen before. And just to mention on how much my teammates help on and off the field: I threw the touchdown and without the blocking or catch, it wouldn’t have mattered.” Beyond high school, Pham said that he doesn’t want to focus on that until the time is right. “I used to be really focused on pursuing football beyond high school but I need to win some games before I think about college,” says Pham.

Dancing Through Life Beth Jucovy shares her passion through Dance Visions NY

“ 28

N

o, I can’t explain the dance to you; if I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it,” once replied Isadora Duncan, the acclaimed American and French dancer whose immense talent and portrayal of the performing arts is now the stuff of legends. Duncan’s techniques have also had a profound effect on Great Neck dancer and artistic director Beth Jucovy, who founded Dance Visions NY, a nonprofit devoted to keeping the Isadora Duncan dances and aesthetic alive, nearly 30 years ago. “I have been dancing all my life. It is my life, my art form,” says Jucovy, who originally studied the Isadora Duncan technique at the age of 5 and was taught by Julia Levine, who danced with Irma Duncan, one of Isadora’s dancers. “I have a very pure exposure to the Duncan work, especially after I studied ballet and high school performing arts. Her work is timeless.” Known as a dancer, adventurer, and ardent defender of the free spirit, Isadora Duncan is one of the most enduring influences on contemporary culture. She is credited with inventing modern dance, and for Jucovy, she still holds the Duncan principles very true to her heart. When living abroad in Germany, Jucovy became involved with a jazz dance company and began teaching the Duncan work. Upon her return to the United States (she has been a Great Neck resident for 30 years), she joined the Isadora Commemorative Dance Company, which had seen a resurgence of appreciation to the technique. Jucovy then began her own company, a collaborative one where everyone was deeply involved with the creative process and choreography. “We [the company] performed each other’s works and that was a parallel to my life, in a way, what we do and how we work,” says Jucovy, who tends to tailor Dance Visions NY performances for particular venues or audiences, with the goal of bringing dance/theater works and narrated, educational programs to wider audiences. “I was never doing it to make it a business, more to bring dance into my own community. Dance is often the least seen and appreciated art. There’s so

much in it literally, abstractly, emotionally, there’s the potential for people to have emotional experiences.” With a goal of advocating that dance is more than commercial entertainment, Jucovy choreographs unique, original works that express a shared humanity. As a dance aesthetic, creative dance, jazz and a body conditioning teacher at Great Neck Continuing Education for the last four years, Jucovy says working with adult artists has been rewarding and in line with the Duncan way. “Before her [Isadora Duncan], it was just ballet. She really changed that and connected with the appreciation of nature, the human experience,” says Jucovy. “She believed everyone should dance, that it’s their birthright to be physical, and much of what I connect to is reminding people viscerally about the beauty of our world.” Jucovy has also been the director and main teacher for her business, Children Dancing for the past 30 years, teaching all levels from age 3 to adults. For children, Jucovy believes that dance is a social experience, as it teaches them to control their bodies and understand personal space. “I enjoy all ages and I see the light in all of them,” she says of her students. “They get more than great physical exercise, but a connection to music, and they feel so rewarded afterwards, almost like a spiritual connective.” While the company brings Duncan’s artistic legacy into the present, Dance Visions NY is all about showcasing beauty and inspiration through the live form of the art that is dance. “Great art enriches one’s life,” says Jucovy. “It can really change people’s lives.” Learn more about Dance Visions NY at www.dancevisionsny.org. Leaving a Legacy Generations of the Gilliar family have contributed to Great Neck since the 1800s By Sheri ArbitalJacoby “On a day in the late 1850s, a young lass and an honest lad came off two different boats in New York harbor. The first things they saw were each other and a genuine Great Neck farmer sitting on his wagon with a Help Wanted sign,” recounts Lucky Seven, a history of the Great Neck Public Schools published in 1964. “They took the jobs, rode the farm wagon from the Battery to Great Neck, were married two weeks later and begat generations of schoolchildren named Gilliar.” The Great Neck peninsula was initially Native American land and then pasture for the livestock of European settlers. When the Gilliar family arrived five generations ago, the population was sparse, a place of farms and great estates. The family has played a role in the civic, intellectual and economic growth of Great Neck ever since. On the peninsula, the forebears of the family began with Edward Raymond Gilliar, who had a homestead demarcated on local maps in the late 1800s describing him as “stonemason and fiddler.” He worked on the Eldridge family estate before it became the Village of Saddle Rock, and he rebuilt the stone foundation and the sea wall of the now historic Saddle Rock Grist Mill. His son, John B. Gilliar, helped form the Alert Fire Department at the north end of the peninsula in 1901 and served as the first assistant chief. In 1904, he was one of the businessmen who organized the Vigilant Fire Department near the railroad, and his declaration to contribute the princely start-up sum of $100 was received by the founding members “amid loud applause,” reports a local newspaper. It was the seed money for a firehouse.

In those early years, John B. opened the real estate firm Kehoe and Gilliar. It had the first telephone on the peninsula with the memorable phone number ONE, which had to be spelled out in capital letters in newspaper advertisements. John B. also co-owned a hotel, Thomaston House, at the corner of Grace Avenue and Middle Neck Road. He had a hand in bringing weekly journalism to Great Neck with the establishment of the North Hempstead Record in 1907, which was later renamed the Great Neck Record. He served as “Overseer of the Poor” of North Hempstead in the early 1900s and was “Tax Collector” in 1911.

John B. was responsible, “probably more than any other one individual,” according to his obituary, for such forward-thinking improvements as a sewer system in 1916 and a street-lighting system. He was the originator and first president of the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce. The Gilliar-Nowill chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on the North Shore of Long Island was founded after WWI, in 1920. When the new train station was dedicated in 1925, John B. Gilliar was the civic leader at the forefront of the community who had the honor of accepting the keys to the railroad station on behalf of the community from the Long Island Rail Road. Great Neck residents attended the ceremony “en masse,” the newspaper reported, and the occasion included a 50-piece band. In the 1920s, the Gilliar family built a miniature golf course on Grace Avenue and opened a pharmacy, the Gilliar Drug Company, in 1926, with two locations— one in what became Great Neck Plaza and one in what has always been referred to as the Old Village, the Village of Great Neck. The pharmacies had phone numbers 100 and 300. Great Neck was growing. To raise money for worthy causes, John B. sponsored an annual Gilliar Cup tennis tournament and a golf tournament. His 1939 obituaries recount he was “a most colorful figure,” one of the peninsula’s most widely known residents, who for half a century was identified with the civic development of Great Neck. John B. and his wife, Catherine, had five sons. One was Frank J. Gilliar, the proprietor of Gilliar Fine Wines and Liquors, which opened in the Old Village as soon as Prohibition was repealed in 1933. In 1937, as chief of the Vigilant Fire Department, he announced the launch of a milestone fundraiser to purchase the community’s first ambulance—a Cadillac Clockwise from left: Vigilant’s annual outing in 1940; Frank Gilliar’s certificate of promotion from Great Neck High School in 1919; Kehoe & Gilliar’s ad with the telephone number ONE, which ran in the paper every week in 1918; John B. He was also chief of the Eighth Battalion, the Nassau County cooperative of volunteer fire companies on the North Shore of Long Island. With his counterpart in New York City, he established a mutual-aid agreement that is still in effect today. Daniel Holtzman, Principal, Great Neck North High School “I love Great Neck because the students are everyone’s top priority—academically, emotionally, cognitively. It truly is an honor to be part of a school district with such a rich history and deep commitment to education. My best memory of Great Neck is attending events that highlight the diversity of our community and school.”

By Sheri ArbitalJacoby

G

reat Neck is perhaps most famous as the fictitious location, West Egg, which inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald as he began writing The Great Gatsby at his home on the peninsula. The public schools are continually ranked among the best in the country, and the breathtaking water front parks, ethnically diverse restaurants and community members, along with the proximity to Manhattan, make the neighborhood incredibly desirable. Great Neck residents are passionate about living and working on the peninsula and share some reasons they believe it’s the perfect place to call home.

Mimi Hu, Communications Committee Chair, Great Neck Chinese Association “I love Great Neck because it has great schools, diversity, interesting people and wonderful community events.”

Noah Sheidlower, Senior, Great Neck South High School “Great Neck encompasses everything you want in a community: restaurants and shops catering to everyone, fantastic resources for new and long-time residents and a diverse population, all willing to better the community.”

My Great Neck

Jacqueline Harounian, Esq., Partner, Wisselman & Associates “To love Great Neck is to accept it for all of its beauty and imperfections. The top-notch schools, parks and cultural events only tell part of the story. Great Neck’s thriving and ever-changing demographics make our town a community filled with diverse viewpoints, interests and good will toward neighbors.”
