Publisher Welcome to Roslyn News Magazine
Interior Design & Decoration WWW.MARILYNROSE.COM LOCUST VALLEY, L.I. 516.676.3800 NEW YORK, N.Y. 800.MHR.3003
“Little town, it’s a quiet village,” is a line that Belle sang in the timeless classic Beauty and the Beast. Although Roslyn is quite charming and the smallest of our North Shore magazine towns, it is not as quiet as some may think. You may have noticed a few style changes and a refreshing look to Roslyn News magazine, which is perfect timing for the rebirth and renewal that comes with spring. On the cover, Christina Claus highlights delicious desserts from several eateries around town, many of which feature a signature dessert that guests with a sweet tooth love to sample. Christina also chats with Roslyn residents as they share what they love about the place they call home. Editor of the Roslyn News, Joe Scotchie takes us on a tour of Roslyn’s historic homes that celebrate the town’s architectural achievements. Speaking of history, Anthony Murray features the nearly 150-year-old St. Mary’s Church and its connection to the parish of the same name in Manhasset as well as it’s impressive choir program. On the artistic front, Roslyn native and musician Sheri Miller performs for her home crowd at My Father’s Place and chats with Jennifer Fauci about how the north shore town has impacted her musical career. Jennifer also highlights Dr. Alan Sloyer, who not only takes care of patients as a gastroenterologist, he also takes stunning photographs of vistas around the world. Kimberly Dijkstra’s boutique roundup readies your closet for the latest in spring fashion as she highlights Pookie & Sebastian, Tyrone, Katherine Tess, Jill Scherer Ltd and more. Allison Eichler keeps the beauty game strong with a visit to Spa de Beauté, where she spoke to renowned aesthetician, Irma Meni, who brings her passion for skincare to Roslyn Village with the opening of her own luxury retreat. Allison also educates us on the importance of physical fitness by taking a ride with SoulCycle and the ever-growing trend in exercise cycling. Joseph Wolkin highlights two athletes from Roslyn High School who excelled this season in their respective sports, proving that Roslyn is known for both academics and athletic excellence. And last but not least, Christopher Birsner sits down with Roslyn High School’s assistant principal to talk about the community service program that has students giving back to the community. As you can see, there’s plenty to explore in this quaint town as we continue to share what makes this community so wonderful. Angela Susan Anton Publisher

ROSLYN’S
Sweet Tooth
By Christina Claus For those of you who say “no” when the waiter comes around to ask if you want dessert, how dare you. Whether your stomach tank is slightly full or completely stuffed, the answer to the dessert question should always be a resounding “yes,” especially in a village like Roslyn, where, on the surface, it is filled with high-end restaurants of all cultures and traditions. But, after digging deeper, one may find that Roslyn is also a land of sweets with most of its eateries containing a dessert menu filled with interesting bites that may go unasked for.

Baklava from LIMANI
offers cooler treats like frozen yogurts with all the fixings and smoothies from Yolo Frozen Yogurt & Desserts or nearly any ice cream your mind can imagine at CoolMess. Residents can try desserts from Mediterranean cuisine at Limani or Japanese cuisine at Kotobuki on Northern Boulevard. For those who don’t mind a quick drive outside of the historic village, one can sample a few different desserts at Mim’s Kitchen & Cocktails in Roslyn Heights or get a cup of gelato in a variety of flavors sure to appease any tastebuds at Gelateria dei Coltelli in East Williston. So, before you say “no” when offered the dessert menu or decide not to indulge in a scoop of ice cream, check out a few of Roslyn’s restaurants with sugary fare.
CoolMess Ice cream is a great dessert all year ’round, but ice cream is pretty simple. CoolMess takes the ice cream eating experience and elevates it to the next level, allowing customers to make the ice cream themselves in just a few easy steps. The concept goes like this:
customers choose a base flavor and follow one of the store’s “messipes” or create their own flavor. The creation goes into a machine and customers watch it become their dream dessert. As for base flavors, patrons can choose from chocolate, vanilla or strawberry sorbet and then choose from more than 20 toppings including caramel sauce, pound cake, brownie bites, Snickers and chocolate coffee beans. For those who aren’t in the mood to get creative and are on the go, pre-created options like The Bomb.com, which has a chocolate chip cookie, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and cookie dough, adorn the menu. For those looking to share a sundae, CoolMess has a list of creations from the It’s Not Your Birthday Birthday Sundae to the Monkey Business. CoolMess also has milkshake options and about 20 gelato flavors to choose from. CoolMess is located at 1512 Old Northern Boulevard; coolmess.com; 516-801-2665.
Limani Known for serving some incredible Mediterranean dishes, the chic restaurant also boasts a hearty dessert menu featuring 12 different end-of-the-meal must haves. The popular Baklava offers layer upon layer of almonds, walnuts, cinnamon and phyllo baked with honey syrup while the Emek is shredded phyllo and custard with an interesting twist of pistachio whipped cream. Other Mediterranean favorites include Karidopita, a walnut sponge cake with cinnamon, cloves and honey syrup served with vanilla ice cream; Loukamades, Greek fried dough puffs dripping with honey, walnuts and cinnamon; Milopita, which features Granny Smith apples and almond cream puff pastry served with pistachio ice cream. Three cookies adorn the menu: Kourambiedes (almond cookies covered in powdered sugar), Melomakarona (walnut honey and spice cookies) and Koulourakia (vanilla flavored sesame seed sprinkled cookies). Limani is located at 1043 Northern Boulevard; limani.com; 516-869-8989.

crunch, are on rotation daily. To check flavors, customers can visit the store’s Facebook page to make sure their favorite flavor is ready to swirl that day. While Yolo boasts a generous menu of savory crepes, its sweet crepes list is twice as long, including flavors like s’mores, peanut butter, sugar and butter and Oreo as well as the special flavors of cannoli cream and snickerdoodle. As for the healthier option, a smoothie, customers can grab a banana berry or mixed berry smoothie in four different sizes. Yolo Frozen Yogurt & Desserts is located at 1355 Old Northern Boulevard; yoloyogurtny.com; 516-200-9191.
When walking through the door of Diane’s Bakery Café, one is met with a gorgeous display of goodies from pies to tarts to squares, to individual treats, cakes, rugelach and more in display cases. Since the bakery opened in 1982, it has been making fresh baked goods each day from scratch in small batches. The bakery café offers perfect pies that look as though they’ve just been moved from a food magazine photo shoot, with flavors from apple to chocolate mousse. Plum almond, pear almond, apple and strawberry cheese are Diane’s tart flavors while brownie, raspberry cheese, chocolate cheese, lemon and apricot almond are her squares. The cheese puff is a must, with its flower-like aesthetic and flaky, soft bite filled with a light cheese and almost lemon flavor. Butter cookies in oatmeal raisin, pecan date, chocolate chip, pecan sandy, jelly and more fill another display case. While Diane’s cinnamon raisin walnut and chocolate rugelach can easily be eaten by the dozen, one might want to save room for the bakery café’s angel or marble pound cake. Diane’s Bakery Café is located at 23 Bryant Avenue; dianesroslyn.com; 516-621-2522.
The Japanese restaurant known for its sushi entrées and signature rolls, has an almost-hidden small dessert menu, offering a small taste of the culture’s sweet cuisine. Kotobuki’s ice cream comes in three flavors: green tea, ginger or red bean. Mochi ice cream, a confection made from Japanese mochi-pounded sticky ricewith an ice cream filling, and banana tempura, bananas prepared tempura style topped with chocolate syrup and choice of ice cream are also on the dessert list. For customers who want to end their meal with a fried dessert, the restaurant offers both fried cheesecake and fried ice cream, while others, who may want to end on the lighter side, can order sliced pineapple. Kotobuki is located at 1530 Northern Boulevard; kotobukirestaurants.com; 516-621-5312.

While the tavern is known for its cuisine being a mix of comfort food, prime steakhouse staples and seafood dishes, Hendrick’s Tavern boasts a dessert menu of 12 dishes from the classic cheesecake to artisanal cheese. Within the menu, customers can order a coconut layer cake, sticky bun with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, a carrot cake covered in cheesecake icing and walnuts, homemade apple crisp topped with whipped cream, a chocolate cloud cake with white chocolate cream and a chocolate ganache, key lime pie, a brownie sundae, a fruit platter, ice cream or mixed berries. Just A Hometown Girl Roslyn native Sheri Miller comes home to share new songs and her passion for music By Jennifer Fauci
S
ome people have a natural inkling of what they want to do in life, even before they can recall their first memory. Local musician Sheri Miller is one of those people. “I have been writing songs and taking classical piano lessons since I was 8 years old,” says Miller, who was writing songs complete with lyrics that were profoundly deep songs about eternal love. “My mother was an opera singer and classical pianist, so I grew up with music. I’ve had so many magical occurrences in my life that nudged me on my artistic path.” While studying at UPenn, Miller learned how to play guitar and jazz piano. It was during that time when she began working with different

blues artists in the rougher parts of Philadelphia where the real soul music was. A believer of signs and connected moments in life, Miller has always dreamed of a Casio piano, but her apartment didn’t allow for the space. One Sunday morning, she woke up and felt an urge to walk through campus on her way to the library. “I passed a church sale and they had a Casio keyboard for $20, which I still have to this day. From that moment on, I felt that becoming a musician was my destiny,” says Miller. “I get so much joy out of performing and I love being able to get everyone to connect with themselves and their own souls.” After graduating from college, Miller considered attending a conservatory to hone her skills, but instead, went to New York City and played every open

mic night that would have her, allowing her to further develop her songwriting voice. Simply put, Miller loves nothing more than the art of songwriting. Having been raised on all of the classic songwriters from Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and The Beatles to Joni Mitchell and Carole King, that’s how she learned to write. Miller also studied the work of Gershwin, Irving Berlin and blues and jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Duke Ellington and Marvin Gaye. She says that those musical genres were big influences in her singing and playing. “I like artists that connect to love and want to create beauty and positivity,” she says. “Music is a vehicle that we can use to spread love and joy into the world. It just feels like my calling in life.” Miller, who currently lives in New York City and spends a lot of her time in California as well, recently came home to Roslyn to perform at the Shelter Rock Library and My Father’s Place. And being a hometown girl returning to her roots is where she will always find her biggest support system. “Playing at My Father’s Place was a true honor. I had heard about the iconic venue for a very long time…so many legends have played there and to have the honor of playing there myself for a full house was amazing,” says Miller, who did a solo performance with

just a guitar and keyboard. “Everyone was so wonderful and kind. I loved playing for my hometown crowd with my parents in the audience.”

Extremely appreciative of her upbringing on the North Shore, Miller gives kudos to Roslyn’s education system and teachers that care about their students.
“I was a runner (I had the best coach in Mr. Fried) and was part of the poetry club, kind of figuring out where I fit in as an artist in a very academic environment,” says Miller. “I also loved Helene Fisher, she was my fifth-grade teacher at Harbor Hill School. She really believed in me and the brilliance of all of her students. She expected greatness and was very supportive and wonderful.” The artist considers it an honor and a real privilege to have grown up in Roslyn, a town rich with history, and she is much more appreciative of it now. “I feel like I am being championed by this town; it’s in my roots,” she says. Miller has spent the past few months recording in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville as she readies to release her songs, which range from timeless and classic to more modern, intimate and confessional styles. She equates herself to a mad scientist when writing songs, noting that she switches back and forth and often writes multiple songs at once. But even when she is in the zone, she always counts her blessings. “I appreciate my fans and I feel very blessed, very lucky and supported,” she says of her ability to communicate through music. “I hope to inspire more artists and songwriters to believe in their dreams.” For more about Sheri Miller, visit sherimiller.com.

Inside St. Mary’s Church
T
he history of St. Mary’s parish in Roslyn is actually closely intertwined with that of St. Mary’s Church in Manhasset, which is only three miles away. From its inception, St. Mary’s in Manhasset was a mission church of St. Michael’s in Flushing. However, in June 1871 it became the mission church of St. Mary’s in Roslyn, remaining in that status until 1901. Father William O’Donnell was appointed pastor in 1871, but died a year later. Father O’Donnell’s successor, Father Patrick F. Sheridan, was appointed pastor of St. Mary’s in Roslyn and inherited St. Mary’s in Manhasset. However, Father Sheridan then built a mission church in Great Neck and moved there in 1876. A mission church is a church that is not locally self-supporting and depends partially upon the support of mission funds from a larger religious organization that established it. After various changeovers in priests throughout the years, Father Louis Mantel served St. Mary’s in Roslyn from 1900 through 1929, but served only a few months when the status of St. Mary’s in Manhasset once again changed and became a mission church of St. Peter’s of Port Washington. HISTORIC PRESERVATION: Roslyn’s Gift To America By Joe Scotchie
B
ack in the mid-1960s, urban renewal was all the rage in America. The nation was flush with cash and certain urban areas were now considered a blight on this prosperous country. Entire neighborhoods in cities large and small across the United States were bulldozed and replaced by super highways, public housing and commercial development.
Urban blight in little Roslyn? It doesn’t seem possible. Still, the area was targeted. Federal authorities apparently reasoned that Roslyn’s proliferation of centuries-old homes were a blight. They, too, were to be bulldozed in place of public housing. Roslyn, as longtime resident Les Arstark once said, was becoming a slum. Enter the enterprising couple of Dr. Roger and Peggy Gerry. These newcomers to the village had decided to set down stakes here. They were also determined to prevent the village’s deterioration. And they succeeded. By helping to form the Roslyn Landmark Society, the Gerrys and other local patriots were able to gain historic status for homes and indeed, an entire district. In 1984, then-First Lady Nancy Reagan solidified Roslyn’s national reputation by declaring the village as a model for historic preservation. To celebrate Roslyn’s achievement, the society hosts an annual house tour every June, one that also showcases these many historic homes. Step back to discover houses, some of which predate the founding of America itself.
Cedarmere 225 Bryant Avenue, Roslyn Harbor Cedarmere, the home of William Cullen Bryant, is the literary capital of Roslyn. Built in 1824, Bryant, then editor of the New York Evening Postscript, pur. . . . . . . . .1824 . . . . . chased the home
in 1843. Richard Kirk, a Quaker farmer, constructed the original section of the house in 1787. When Bryant took ownership, he enlarged the house and also expanded his holdings by acquiring 200 acres of land that later became the William Cullen Bryant Preserve. In 1902, a fire nearly
destroyed the main house. Bryant’s grandson, Harold Godwin, restored the house, which today is open for tours. Interest in Bryant has picked up over the years, with the Roslyn Viaduct being renamed for him and an historical marker standing outside of the estate’s residence.

. . . . . . . . .1895 ..... Ellen E. Ward Memorial Clock Tower (ca. 1895) Tower Place The symbol of Roslyn is the Ellen E. Ward Clock Tower. William Cullen Bryant’s career is steeped in Civil War history and this grand tower is also a legacy to that bloody conflict. The tower, society members observe, was commissioned by her children and dedicated to her memory in 1895. Ellen Eliza Cairns Ward was born in 1826 and grew up in Roslyn. She married Midshipman Robert Stuart, USN, in 1848. The couple had three children and resided in Roslyn Harbor. Lt. Stuart resigned his commission in 1857 and died in 1863. Ellen Ward was deeply involved in the Roslyn community. She dedicated a window in Trinity Church in memory of her husband and in 1885 she donated the Roslyn Watering Trough, which is located on the triangle at the intersection of Old Northern Boulevard and Bryant Avenue. This newspaper played a key role in promoting the construction of the tower until its completion in 1895. A century later, a grand renovation project took place. One of the clocks on the tower was inoperable. Morris Welte, stepfather of Janet Galante, soon to be the village’s first female mayor, worked to fix that clock and a new life for the tower was underway. Everyone loves the clock tower. Christmas caroling and tree lighting take place here. The start of a 5K run through the village starts there. The Roslyn High School homecoming parade makes its way past the attractive stone monument. Local residents can hike up its stairs to take in a panoramic view of Hempstead Harbor. Today it is maintained by the Village of Roslyn. A descendant of the Ward family, Marshall Ward volunteered interior carpentry restoration in 1995.

saws, grindstones and other tools needed to run the Bryant estate. The mill was originally powered by a water wheel but in 1885 Bryant’s daughter Julia replaced it with a turbine drive.” The mill was recently restored by the Gerry Charitable Trust in cooperation with the Landmark Society and Nassau County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Harbor Hill Estate in East Hills. The Harbor Hill Water Tower also known as the Mackay Water Tower was designed in 1899 and built in 1900-1902, as a component of that estate. “The water tower is an important survivor from the period when much of Long Island was developed with great estates,” society literature says. “The tower is significant as a handsome
utilitarian structure...every aspect of estate design and planning was carefully considered by the owners and architects.” One of the most important attributes of the tower, society members added, is its black slate roof. The roof, in combination with the random ashlar walls, has led to conjecture that the tower’s design is based on the Belgian model.

It’s Storage Time! . . . . . . . . 1773 ...... Paper Mill (ca. 1773 and 1915) Paper Mill Road, Gerry Park Here is another surviving piece of architecture that predates the founding of the republic. The 1773 Paper Mill was established by Hendrick Onderdonk. That matters, too. Onderdonk was an heir to one of the Roslyn’s most prominent families. During the Revolutionary War, Onderdonk performed valuable espionage services for the Continental Army, so much so that George Washington, while on his triumphant victory tour of Long Island, stopped by the Onderdonk House in downtown Roslyn for a visit. More history. The structure was the first paper mill in New York State and one of the first of its kind in the 13 colonies. In 1801, Onderdonk sold the mill to William Valentine. The Valentine family then operated the mill until 1896, when it stopped production. The mill remained drenched in American history right to the end. First, George Washington. At the end, Grover Cleveland. The last mill product was a set of pasteboard cake boxes for Cleveland’s June 1886 wedding. Historic preservation didn’t begin in the 1960s. In 1915, the Roslyn Neighborhood Association erected the present building to conform to the original. Today, it is owned and managed by The Town of North Hempstead.

It is no secret that growing older is a part of life. But as we age, we don’t necessarily have to show the signs so prominently. Helping both men and women alike look their best as the years pass is Spa de Beauté, a luxury skincare experience located at the corner of Main Street and Old Northern Boulevard. The spa’s secret weapon is the use of the product line, Biologique Recherche. Biologique was founded in 1978 by a biologist, physiotherapist and doctor as a research and development lab to develop the most effective products. Decades later, the French brand is known for its effectiveness based on a
clinical approach and its holistic methodology—something Spa de Beauté owner and aesthetician Irma Meni believes in so much that she exclusively uses Biologique in her spa. “Biologique Recherche respects the skin,” she explains. The experience starts with a skin analysis consultation with Meni. Then, depending on the evaluation of your skin and what your treatment goals are, the exact needs of the client are pinpointed in a highly customized mixture of Biologique products, mixed by Meni herself. Treatments range from facials and massages to micro-puncture and body treatments. The beauty of the spa, and what Meni prides

Seeking Wanderlust Dr. Alan Sloyer turns a hobby into capturing moments of a lifetime
By Jennifer Fauci
S
wiss-American photographer Robert Frank once said, “There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.” For Roslyn native Dr. Alan Sloyer, his entire body of work, both medically and artistically, can be attributed to that mantra. Sloyer is a gastroenterologist in Great Neck, and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Northwell and St. Francis Hospital. With more than 30 years of medical experience, Sloyer is an expert in his field. But when he’s not at the office, he enjoys

I always brought my camera along to document what was going on around me.” As time went on, Sloyer became more interested in photography, eventually turning his hobby into a more serious art form.

want to go and how you want to do it, but it’s a priority of mine,” says the doctor and photographer. “I am fortunate to have the luxury to be able to take time off to travel. When I come back, I hang up pictures in the office. A lot of patients really enjoy that.” When it comes to inspiration, Sloyer keeps his options open, drawing from nature, people and is especially fond of street photography. “A beautiful landscape or sunrise or sunset around the golden hour is also a sight to be seen, especially when you travel, seeing those views from all over the world,” he says. “My wife and I just got back from Myanmar and those images really demonstrate what I like to photograph.” Sloyer’s talents are as much a reward for himself and others around him who enjoy his work. And while it may seem like he has taken more trips around the globe than many in their lifetime can count, he’s not done yet. “It’s just amazing to me, being able to capture a moment in a picture forever,” he says. “And there’s still so much I haven’t seen yet.” For more about Alan Sloyer and his stunning photography, visit www.sloyer.com.

Roslyn High School’s community service program shapes the character of the school By Christopher Birsner

“The service you do for others is the rent you pay for the time you spend on earth.” These are the words of Muhammad Ali, a man who did more than just play sports. He was a leading force in activism and philanthropy, helping people of all backgrounds overcome their own disadvantages. Ali is an inspiration for many generations of people who look to make the world a better place. His powerful words also sit on the web page of the Roslyn High School community service program. In 1994, the Roslyn Public School District’s board of education instituted a community service requirement, mandating that

all Roslyn High School students complete 40 hours of field work. Jay Pilnick, an assistant principal at the high school, has served as the coordinator of the program for the last 23 years. “Our kids usually average 160 to 200 hours [of community service],” says Pilnick. “It’s really become less of a graduation obligation and more something that kids enjoy doing that has become part of our culture. A lot of them start their hours the day after they graduate middle school. They start doing stuff from that summer all the way to their [high school] graduation year.” The idea of installing the program came from the superintendent of the district at the time, stating that
implementing a program like this could be a valuable learning experience for students. Giving back to the community is something the district both preaches and participates in, so it is easy for students to kick-start a new initiative. “It was introduced to the kids as just another thing that they had to do,” says Pilnick of the pilot program. “Nowadays, it’s a natural thing; they all do it. I encourage them to find activities that they enjoy instead of doing it just as a requirement.” The program allows for a wide variety of work such as working for local temples or churches or helping out at local hospitals. Even giving back to the school is considered

part of fulfilling that requirement. Once completed, students input their hours online so that the school knows they have been busy doing this work. “There’s a million things kids can do,” says Pilnick. “It Every year, a bunch has to be at a nonprofit do something I never organization, thought they could obviously. But as long as —Jay Pilnick, it fits under Assistant Principal a nonprofit agency, they can do it.” In addition to working for outside organizations, the high school hosts its fair share of events that could count towards community service. One of the biggest events is the Roslyn High School Charity Benefit Fashion Show, which is held every January. The event raises more than $20,000 per year for local agencies. “We take care of our own through that,” says Pilnick of the event. “The Roslyn High School students put on kids are working on this show from various events that the start of the school year up until benefit charities and organizations as part the performance in January. people to that event.” But charitable events go beyond the fashion show. The school has more than 50 clubs and after school programs, with every single one of them having some sort of fundraiser that is meant to raise money for charity. The School Students for Social Responsibility (SSSR), for example, holds annual food, clothing and eyeglass drives for people in need. And The GayStraight Alliance recently donated more than 1,100 pairs of socks to an LGBTQ+ shelter. In March, the student government held its “Clash of the Classes,” a collection of competitions between the grades. Among the more beneficial battles in the event is a canned food drive where the students compete to see which class collects the most cans for charity. All of the donations were given to a local agency. “There’s so many things that go on in our building almost every day,” says Pilnick. “It’s crazy how much fundraising goes on.” Students and their organizations who are interested in starting an event as part of the community service program must go through Pilnick for approval. However, because of how invested the students are in doing this work, Pilnick has had to turn down some ideas. “Every week a student comes up with another event they want to run,” says Pilnick. “There is only so much we can do, but every single
club runs something as well.” Pilnick often encourages students to focus their charitable endeavors on the local community, such as the Concerned Citizens of Roslyn Youth and the Roslyn High School Scholarship Fund. The school also donates to local families who are in need of assistance. “I feel like, with a district like Roslyn, our kids are very lucky to be in the environment they live in, especially with the kind of education they get at our school,” notes Pilnick. “We’re a very caring and nurturing school. It’s important for students to understand to give back to the community that has been so good to them.” Pilnick says that it is extremely rare to have a student not complete his or her hours as the entire school has embraced this giving culture. He hopes that any student that walks through Roslyn High School and participates actively in this program continues their kind ways beyond high school. “You are talking to the most involved, proudest administrator in that building,” says Pilnick. “Our kids are amazing. They do amazing things every year, and a bunch do something I never thought they could do. I am always impressed. We have an amazing group of students in our building.” For more information on the community service program and the work that Roslyn High School does, visit roslynschools.org.

Cycling For The
SOUL By Allison Eichler
A
quick scroll through Instagram and one will find a plethora of guys and gals showing off their toned muscles, proper weight-lifting form and a variety of workout routines. For once, there is a trend that no one can complain about—getting fit. Among the many ways to train your body to look and feel its best is cycling. Specifically, SoulCycle.
Founded in 2006, SoulCycle has taken the nation by storm, with a location right here in Roslyn Heights since the summer of 2012. “[SoulCycle has] changed my life,” says Julie Dermer, a Roslyn SoulCycle senior instructor. “As an instructor, witnessing the soul journeys of my riders always blows me away. There is so much integrity every ride.” Perhaps what is most attractive about SoulCycle
is its minimalistic aesthetic. Clean lines, white walls and yellow accents provide a cheery atmosphere as soon as cyclers walk in the door. The endorphins only rise from there, and after just one ride, guests are hooked. “The high you get from cycling is like none other,” says Dermer. “And it’s addicting. I think that’s what keeps people coming back.” Rather than offer memberships like a gym, SoulCycle
works by purchasing classes individually or in bulk. Those trying Soul for the first time can buy a “First Time Ride” for $20 and then a “SoulCycle Starter” set of three classes for $75. Once cyclers have redeemed the special beginner rates, prices ranges from $36 for one class, all the way up to $900 for 30 classes. Other packages include five, 10 and 20 classes. Every Monday at noon the class listings go live for bike reservation, but
ROSLYN NEWS MAGAZINE

a class package must first be purchased under your account before you can reserve a spot. While each class is just 45 minutes and may appear to consist of simply cycling, a ride is really so much more, and no two experiences are ever the same. High-intensity cardio, a muscle-sculpting weighted arm series, a stretch and each instructor’s unique personality make for a different class every time you sit on the bike.
The Setup
For first-timers, Dermer recommends arriving at least 15 minutes prior to the start of class. Soul will provide the proper clip-in bike shoes for a nominal rental fee, but your own clip-ins will do just fine if you own a pair, and both bottled water and filtered water stations are available to keep you hydrated throughout your ride. What you wear is up to you, but be sure to dress comfortably to accommodate the rhythm-based choreography that will take you through all of the sprints, hills, jogs and jumps that comprise a Soul class. In case you need to change or store personal belongings, keycode lockers are available. Upon arrival in the studio, a sign-in sheet confirms your bike reservation and staff will then assist in adjusting the bike so the seat and handlebars are custom to your comfort
58
level and abilities, as well as give you all the information you need to know before locking into your pedals and starting your ride. Bins near the instructor’s podium house the weights you’ll need for the arm series.
The Ride
Once your bike is adjusted, you have everything you need and you’re clipped in and ready to go, the fun begins. Classes are designed to feel fun, distracting you from your muscles protesting the workout, so expect low light, loud music, a lot of sweat and a ton of energy. Those looking to tone the experience down a bit can grab a pair of earplugs from the front desk. Once class starts, the instructor will sync the experience to a playlist they’ve curated. A typical ride starts with a warm-up followed by some hills and sprints, moves on to working out the arms with weights and finishes up with one last cardio burst and a restorative stretch. Over the course of 45 minutes, riders cycle through a variety of positions to build muscle, burn fat and calories, boost metabolism and transform the body into a cycling powerhouse. Switching hand positions on the handlebars, lifting in and out of the saddle, swaying the hips and doing some push-ups are
ROSLYN NEWS MAGAZINE
just a few of the ways riders will get the most out of their session—added challenges include twisting the resistance knob to up the intensity. “The next day you may feel a little sore on your behind, but that goes away,” notes Dermer. “If you’ve tapped into muscles you haven’t used before, you’re going to feel worked—in a good way.” After trying SoulCycle for the first time, you may swear off of it the next morning when you’re feeling soreness in muscles you didn’t even know you had, but the magic comes from somehow finding yourself craving to do it all
over again anyway. “SoulCycle is like nowhere else,” says Dermer. “The ride we take together is physical, spiritual and, at times, emotional. Together we inspire each other to get stronger and discover strength we never realized we had. More than the physical, the inner strength and courage each class brings is even more life changing. SoulCycle is a true sanctuary where we find our best selves.” Visit SoulCycle’s Roslyn location at 250 S. Service Road in Roslyn Heights. QUIET, But FAST By Joseph Wolkin

aniel Williams is shy. He focuses his attention on the track, wanting to succeed. And at this stage in his career for the Roslyn High School Bulldogs, he knows he can do just that. “I knew I was talented probably in my freshman year, when I was running times that were near the top of my class,” says Williams, whose start in track came at a young age thanks to the help of his parents. “I think I started when I was about 5 or 6 when my parents put me into one of those programs for little kids to run track.” The junior is one of the lead runners for the Bulldogs varsity track and field team. Thus far in his high school career, he has set multiple

records, even breaking the Roslyn record on May 17, 2018, in the 100-meter relay at the Section VIII Division 3A Championships, leading him to a conference title. “It was the first big record I broke,” he recalls. “It was really surprising. I remember that feeling just thinking about it.” While the triumph might have been a surprise for Williams, it wasn’t for head coach Kristen Hamilton. “When he gets in a race, he doesn’t hold back,” says Hamilton of the athlete. “This quiet kid turns into a fierce competitor. He doesn’t want to lose and he leads by example.” During the 2019 indoor track season, Williams has been just as fast. He set yet another school record

—Kristen Hamilton at the Section VIII Conference 4 Championship in January. This time, it was in the 55-meter dash. He posted a 6.73, good enough to set the standard from now on. “He shows everyone what a good track and field guy is like,” Hamilton says of Williams, who is always a good sport. “He said, ‘I’ll go for it,’ and he excelled at something he never did before.” Although he has seven major triumphs to date, Williams is ready for more. With more than a year left at Roslyn, there is plenty of time to continue his winning ways, and Hamilton believes that her athlete can run at the NCAA level. “He is starting to realize how fast he is and could be,” Hamilton says.

t’s rare to see a coach and student get along so well, almost like family. But family is what drives sports and it is also what drives track star Natya Glasco to excel. “She really helps me every day,” says Vera Trenchfield, coach of the Roslyn High School varsity girls track and field team of her senior star in Glasco. “My coach and I have had such a great relationship over the last four years,” says Glasco. That bond helped lead Glasco to become an all-county athlete by her sophomore year. In her junior year, Glasco became a member of the New York all-state team, where she was reaching more than 35 feet in the shot put, leading her to seven top-five results in 10 contests, highlighted by four runner-ups. “I never thought I would take up a sport but my dad actually told me to consider doing a sport in the eighth
Track star Natya Glasco is ready for the next step with Rider University grade,” says Glasco. Once she tried out for the track and field team, Glasco was hooked. Her coach knew that she could be a star with the right work ethic and coaching. Encouraged by her father, by ninth grade, Glasco was working out consistently and began to get stronger. Ever since then, she has only become a better athlete. “It’s fun but it’s also hard because I’m setting an example for my four younger siblings,” she says. “When I perform poorly, they see and notice. I just want to do well all the time.” This role model is succeeding not only as an athlete, but also as a student. The senior has committed to attend Rider University next year, where she will be a part of the women’s track and field team. This athlete-coach friendship grew to an all-time high on June 1, 2018, when Glasco did something
Trenchfield couldn’t have imagined. For 30 years, no one at Roslyn High School touched Trenchfield’s shot put record of 38 feet. On that June day at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Section 8 Qualifier, Glasco did the unthinkable in 40 feet, one-inch. With a leap of faith and plenty of confidence, the record is now in the hands of Glasco, Trenchfield’s protégé. “She broke my 30-year-old record,” Trenchfield says. “It’s such a blessing to see the athlete that I trained can come back 30 years to the month to break my record in the shot put.” While Glasco says there is always room for improvement, she is as positive as it gets. And no matter what, she will always be thankful for what Trenchfield has done for her. “My coach knew I was a good thrower and that I’d shine with anything I did,” says Glasco. “She kept me open to trying new things.”

my O ROSLYN By Christina Claus
nce home to many notable people, including Michael Crichton, author of Jurassic Park and creator of ER, Fred Wilpon, owner of the New York Mets, and Christopher Morley, American journalist, novelist, essayist and poet which the local 98-acre park on Searingtown Road is named after, the village of Roslyn covers .6 square miles of land. Within that mileage is a charming community filled with quaint shops, the clock tower at Main Street and Old Northern Boulevard and Gerry Park. Roslyn residents and those who work in the north shore town explained what they loved most about the picturesque area.
Victor Caputo, Director of The Bryant Library
Craig Johanson, Principal of Roslyn Middle School Roslyn is a community and school district that values education and supports their children in all facets of the school. Educating the whole child and developing new pedagogical initiatives are embraced, funded and encouraged. It is a true honor to work in the Roslyn School District and to be a part of the community.
It is very easy for me to say why I love Roslyn; very simply, it’s the people. In my more than 21 years at Bryant Library I have met so many wonderful people which has resulted in many friendships. It is great to work in an area that puts such a high value on education and community. In my role as library director I hear many stories about the positive impact that The Bryant Library has had on the lives of our patrons throughout the years. It is never lost on me, the positive impact those same patrons have had on my own life. The staff at Bryant looks forward to continuing to meet the needs of our community and I look forward to seeing all of you at the library very soon.
Alex Bloom Junior at Roslyn High School Why I enjoy Roslyn so much is the feeling of community here, and warm, friendly people. I have been living in Roslyn since I was 2 years old and I love this community. My favorite memory is probably of homecoming football game/marching band parade at my school, and just being with my friends in general.
Brian Koppelman, Filmmaker and producer I used to promote concerts when I was a kid at My Father’s Place. Eppy [owner Michael Epstein] used to let me take the club on Saturday afternoons and let me promote bands for teenage audiences. I got to know him and the other managers at the club and they would let me roadie for the bands playing at night like the Dixie Dregs, Johnny Winter and Riot. What an incredible experience for a kid. Shannon Marchese, Children’s Services Coordinator at The Bryant Library I love working at The Bryant Library, next to Gerry Park, where I remember visiting with my family when I was little to see the ducks.
