Letter from the Publisher ear Neighbor, With the summer ebbing and the fall and winter seasons on the horizon, now is the time to start hunkering down and nesting for the colder and cozier temperatures that await us over the next few months. That is why Angela Susan Anton’s House & Home is our way of giving you advice on what needs to be addressed now, before the frigid weather is upon us. Essential Fall Home and Garden Maintenance Tips

Experts reveal how a little prevention now can save lots of time and money in the future By Colleen Maidhof

Now that the leaves are beginning to change color and the days are getting shorter, homeowners have a slew of chores to complete to make sure their homes and gardens are in tip-top shape for the fall and winter seasons. Here are some indoor and outdoor essentials to add to your to-do list. Prep Your Heating System The cooler temperatures are soon to come and before you turn up the heat, you need to make sure your heating system is as ready as you are to turn it on. “The best thing you can do is get a visual of the system before turning it on. Take out a flashlight and look for anything out of the ordinary. Look for rust or anything making noises. If something doesn’t look right, call a professional and have it serviced,” says Bruce Lyons of Lyons Air Conditioning and Heating Inc. in Bellmore. Making sure that dust and debris are removed or away from the heating system is also important. “Those who have a boiler should make sure nothing is around it. The flame needs oxygen to burn and blockages can starve the airflow,” says Lyons. “If you have a forced-air heating system, make sure the filters are clean because the dust that built up over the summer will get blown into the home when you turn it on.” Check the Roof and Gutters By making sure your home’s roof and gutters are in good condition, you can help prevent major damage from freezing rain, snow and ice. Bill Taylor of Four Seasons Roofing Inc. in Farmingdale says homeowners should inspect their roof and gutters before a major rain or snow storm occurs. “Leaves and debris can get trapped in the gutters. What you want to look for is proper water flow off of the roof. Jammed gutters during the fall and winter stop them from working correctly,” says Taylor. According to Taylor, homeowners should check for lifted shingles. “A lot of the time, the nails along the

perimeter of the roof get wet and push the bottom of the shingle up. During the winter, ice and snow can get in the openings and cause the wood to rot, which can cause mold in the home,” he says. To prevent ice damming, homeowners can install heater cables along the perimeter of the

roof and make sure their attic is properly insulated. “Turning the heating cable on during snowy, freezing weather prevents ice from building up along the perimeter of the roof and causing heavy weight on the gutters, which can damage them,” says Taylor. “If you have an attic, make sure it’s properly insulated, too. If it’s properly insulated, ice and snow stay pretty solid on the roof.” Maintaining your roof and gutters now can save you time and money in the future. “A little bit of maintenance goes a long way. If you neglect any part of something that’s becoming damaged, such as loose gutters, then come spring, you are looking at major repairs that could have been avoided,” says Taylor. >>

Inspect the Garage Door The garage door protects both the garage and home from outside elements and Dennis Dubowski of Above & Beyond Garage Doors advises homeowners to make sure it’s ready for the cooler months ahead. “The doors need to be lubricated every three months and maintained every six months,” says Dubowski. “Look for wear and tear across the hinges and look for wear and tear on the weather stripping, which is the seal that goes around the top, sides and bottom of the door. If a garage door isn’t sealed up correctly, it’s going to make the home very drafty and you can get ice in the garage.” Dubowski recommends having a professional inspect the garage. “A licensed contractor can notice if something is worn out that you may not see and that can save the door. Garage doors can last up to 15 years, especially if you do maintenance on them,” he says. Shut Off Your Sprinkler System To prevent your sprinkler system pipes from bursting during freezing temperatures, you need to winterize them before it gets too cold. “Homeowners have to winterize their sprinkler system by calling a professional to remove all of the water from the system’s pipes and valves. This prevents them from breaking when it gets cold. By Thanksgiving, everyone should be winterized,” explains Adam Dedesco of Noble Irrigation Corporation in Hewlett. Check the Windows and Doors Making sure your windows and doors are sealed shut may seem like an obvious thing to do, but according to Lyons it’s still very important to check because any type of opening can cause drafts and raise your heating bill. “Check for any openings, cracks and broken seals because they can allow cold air and water to get into the house. Make sure the windows are closed all of the way by pushing down on them,” says Lyons. “Always check the basement and attic to make sure the outdoor elements can’t get inside. Cold drafts will increase the need for heat.” Protect Your Evergreens Winter burn, which is also known as sunburn and windburn, is a common injury to evergreens during the winter. According to Gino Leonardi of Martin Viette Nurseries in East Norwich,

gardeners can identify winter burn by looking for golden or brown needles on their evergreens. “It’s caused by a combination of the sun and persistent cold, drying winds, which draw upon the reserves of moisture in the pine needles. When we’ve had very bad winters, winter burn is very obvious in the spring,” says Leonardi. “We have something called Wilt-Pruf, which acts as a protective coat for the plants, but now people are also wrapping their important trees or shrubs with burlap to prevent winter burn.”

“Mulch helps prevent frost-heaving, which is when the plants are pushed out of the ground by the expansion and contraction of the soil as it cools off and heats up,” says Leonardi. Mulch Before Thanksgiving Not only does mulch make your garden look tidy, but it also protects plant roots from the winter cold. According to Leonardi, you should put down mulch before Thanksgiving because it’s not good to feed a plant that is going into its hibernation stage. “Mulching will protect bulbs, bushes and evergreens during the winter; however, you don’t want to put mulch too close to the stems, you want the mulch to be a few inches away from them because it can do some damage.” Prepare for the Next Gardening Season If you can’t think of what to do with your pile of dead leaves and vegetables in your garden, composting may be a great option. Not only is it a creative way to get rid of unneeded plant matter, it can also be used to feed your garden in the spring. “Composting is a natural process that turns organic material into a dark rich substance that is good for your garden come springtime. We have compost bags, which are great because you can build your own compost as you clean up your yard. You use dead plants and you can even add in paper. It adds nutrients to your garden’s soil to ensure healthy plants.” Leonardi says, “It’s a great way to plan ahead.” Spending a little time this autumn preparing your home for the cooler months can potentially prevent big problems next spring. Quick-Fix Closets

A professional organizer shares tips on how to make the most of your space By Tina O’Keeffe

Velvet Suit Hangers are slim and fit together nicely, which keep hanging clothes neat and prevent the wasted space of their mismatched counterparts (50 for $24.99, AmazonBasics, www.amazon.com).

Clear Shelf Dividers keep each item separated and in its place, so taking down one thing from a high shelf doesn’t cause an avalanche. The valet knob adds another level of function and convenience ($9.99, The Container Store, www.containerstore.com).

Chrome Shoe Tower slanted shelves hold 50 pairs of shoes, making them easy to see and grab ($79.99, Whitmor, www.target.com).

Clothing

The hang up: A quick fix that makes a tremendous difference with clothing is hanger overhaul. Despite your best intentions, the mismatching of hangers often leads to clothes getting pushed and pulled in various directions and, inevitably, different shapes lead to gaps or wasted space. Donate or recycle your old hangers and make a big difference by replacing them with velvet slim hangers that are available at stores and online. Top-shelf terror: You try to be smart by storing purses and bags on the top shelf of your closet, but every time you pull on one, you have an avalanche. Sound familiar? Try clear shelf dividers. These inexpensive and easy-to-install solutions slip onto the shelf and create a wall that keeps stored items separated. Understanding cubism: Professional closets usually contain a cube system for storing smaller items. Consider building these yourself out of mesh squares that clip together to form cubes in any configuration you like. Use these at the bottom of your closet for shoes or along the side for storing stackables like sweaters. Shoes Over: Many clients have had success with sturdy over-the-door shoe racks. Don’t think of the flimsy pocket ones that tear and can only fit a flip-flop. These industrial-strength organizers hold up to 36 pairs of shoes and can even accommodate heels. Under: Under-the-bed shoe organizers can be perfect for seasonal shoes and seriously reduce closet clutter. Be sure to buy one that has a zip cover to provide protection against dust. In between: If your closet has the space, slanted shoe shelves are the perfect solution, making as many as 50 pairs of shoes easy to see and grab. Some are even available on wheels, so you can roll them out of your closet.

Grid Wire Modular Shelving and Storage Cubes create a cube system for storing smaller items. Easy to assemble, these units take any form you like to allow for convenient cubbies at the bottom of a closet or shelves along the side ($19.99, Bed Bath & Beyond, www.bedbathandbeyond.com).

G

etting organized is often at the top of everyone’s wish list—and it’s no surprise that one of the biggest organizing challenges are closets. From basements to bedrooms, pantries to playrooms and family rooms to foyers, the storage that closets provide is both a blessing and a curse. Having your closet professionally redesigned is a wonderful way to maximize space and create sturdy results. However, not everyone has the budget for that type of home improvement, so here are a few tips to maximize your closet space.

11B

ANGELA SUSAN ANTON’S HOUSE & HOME • FALL 2015

Every closet is different and each family has varying needs. Try some of these solutions to figure out what’s right for you and your family. Shelving Push: Shoving cans and jars into your pantry after shopping is a time saver, but finding those items later is a time waster. Can dispensers are great for soups, vegetables and beverages—and help keep you organized as you load new cans from the back to push older items to the front. Pull: Pull-out pantry shelves are fantastic, but they’re expensive to install. For the same effect, try pull-out bins and drawers that can be installed right onto the shelf. Rubbermaid makes slide and stack baskets that can do the job. Grab: Sometimes, you have to go back to basics and stick with what’s tried and true. The lazy Susan is one such product. Rotating bath caddies are great, too. With so many modern variations, this turn-and-grab solution makes items like spices, small cosmetics and toiletries easily accessible. ASA Tina O’Keeffe is a professional organizer at Stow & Behold (www.stowandbehold.com), where her slogan is “Believe in the power of organizing.”

Whitmor Resin 36-Pair Over the Door Shoe Rack neatly and efficiently holds 36 pairs of shoes on the inside of your closet door ($29.99, Whitmor, www.amazon.com).

The 12-Pair Under-theBed Shoe Box seriously reduces closet clutter by storing seasonal shoes out of sight, while the zip-close cover provides protection against dust ($27.90, The Home Depot, www. homedepot.com).

This Clear Lazy Susan isn’t just for pantries anymore. This modern version can work in a linen closet for toiletries, makeup or medication to make any small item accessible ($10.95, Madesmart, www. crateandbarrel.com).

Home 12-Can Dispenser makes items easier to find—and loading from the back helps you use older items first ($22.98, Neu, www.walmart.com).

Rubbermaid Slide-n-Stack Baskets come in a variety of shapes for spacesaving under-cabinet storage ($49.99$51.99 for set of six, Rubbermaid, www. justplasticboxes.com).

Gardening Season’s Not Over Yet Sow now and you’ll reap the rewards next spring By Karen Musgrave

S

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. The weather is cooler, the corn is fresh, and apple pie and Thanksgiving are just around the corner. But with the kids back at school and after-school activities in full swing, many of us forget about the garden.

everal factors actually make fall a season of opportunity. It’s not only a great time to prepare your yard and garden for winter, but it’s also the perfect time to get a head start on next spring’s chores.

Fall Is for Planting Autumn is a fantastic time to plant trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. Although the air temperature is cooler, the soil is still quite warm, which allows plant roots to grow well until the ground freezes. Tulips, daffodils, crocus and other spring-blooming bulbs should also be planted now. They need the cold temperatures of winter in order to produce blooms in the spring. Don’t Forget to Water Although the hot, humid weather of summer is over, plants still require

regular watering. For the first six weeks after placing them in the ground, new plantings should be checked for water daily. Established plants require about 1 to 1½ inches of water per week. Garden Helpers If you have trouble with weeds, apply one last shot of weed killer when the temperature is higher than 65 degrees and it should remain warm for a few days. An application of Ironite to your trees, shrubs and lawn will help plants develop a stronger root system. But, don’t fertilize after October 31. Mulch We often think of mulch as the final item we

add to garden beds in the springtime to give them a finished look. But in the autumn, mulch leaves with your lawn mower and place them in your compost pile or around your roses for winter protection. Pond Care Before the leaves fall, place a net over your pond to keep leaves and critters out. Now is also the perfect time to make sure your pond heater is working, so you are prepared when you need to use it. >>

I HAVE A PROBLEM

HERE. AND THAT PROBLEM IS THAT

I DON’T HAVE ANY COMPLAINTS. The everyday stress of maintaining his house was giving Herb Schnipper plenty to grumble about. Now his cares revolve around such things as walking the beach, spending time with family, or what time he’s heading to The Amsterdam’s bistro for lunch. When Herb moved to The Amsterdam at Harborside, an Independent Living Retirement Community, he immediately took full advantage of the active and rewarding lifestyle. Making new friends, swimming daily, ballroom dancing, traveling the world, and simply enjoying the finer things we have to offer – it was all right here waiting for him. Herb also found a sense of security with life care, knowing he made a smart financial investment for his future right here, in Port Washington on Long Island’s beautiful North Shore. It’s a lifestyle filled with anything but complaints, and it’s only available at The Amsterdam at Harborside.

Lawn Care Whether you need to fill in some bare spots or reseed the entire lawn, now is the time to get started. Plentiful rainfall, cooler temperatures and little competition from weeds make this the best time for seeding. Seed mixtures are available for every condition, from full sun to deep shade, so use the combination that best fits your specific circumstances. Remember Your Feathered Friends Clean and fill your bird feeders with suet and black oil sunflower seeds. The fats and oils will help birds survive through the winter. Leave the dead stalks of purple coneflowers, black-eyed

Susans and other plants unpruned—the seeds and berries feed birds naturally throughout the winter. Garden Clean-Up A good fall clean-up will ensure an easier start in spring. Take advantage of the cool temperatures

Don’t overlook your garden tools: Clean your rakes, shovels and other garden equipment before you close the shed for the winter. Be sure to move that snow shovel to the front of the garage, so it’s within easy reach once winter comes. >>

Keep a Record Take pictures, make a garden map and label your plants, so next spring you’ll remember what you planted where. Make a special note of what worked well, what didn’t and what areas of the yard need more water. Keep those little plastic tabs that come with new plants—the ones that show a picture of the plant with its
